Adoptive Father Launches Formerly Homeless Boy to Basketball Stardom

Caleb Purdue and Father-Youtube

19-year-old Caleb Swanigan has become one of the best players in college basketball – but if it weren’t for his adoptive father’s faith over the years, he may not have ever made it onto the court.

That’s because for most of Caleb’s childhood, he weighed 360 pounds and was homeless.

His mother would take him from shelter to shelter around Indianapolis, until she finally gave up her parental rights in 2011. It was then that recently-divorced Roosevelt Barnes volunteered to adopt Caleb as his rightful son.

RELATEDHigh School Installs Washing Machines for Homeless Students

Roosevelt was determined to encourage and inspire his new offspring no matter his weight or upbringing. So when Caleb said he wanted to play basketball, Roosevelt – being a former pro-football player himself – set up a training schedule for his son.

Caleb recently graduated with a 3.3 GPA and now plays for the Purdue Boilermakers. He has also been voted one of the top prep players in the national class of 2015 by ESPN.

And he says he wouldn’t have accomplished any of it if it weren’t for his father.

Restaurant Only Serves Meals Lovingly Made by Grandmas From Around the World

Grandmas Cooking-Youtube

Everybody knows that there is nothing quite like grandma’s cooking.

That’s why Jody Scaravella created a restaurant that is only run entirely by grandmothers.

Every day of the week at Enoteca Maria on Staten Island, New York City, a grandmother from a different country takes charge of the team and creates a menu based off of her home nation. The “nonnas” – which is Italian for “grandmother” – come from all over the world. From Sri Lanka, to Peru, to Ireland, to Greece, to Russia; every single one of the women on the 30-person team take turns playing lead chef.

Jody first became inspired to create the restaurant after he lost both his sister and mother in a short span of time. Aching for a matriarchal connection in his life, he got the idea to create a place that could specifically play host to the love and wonders of classical grandmother cooking.

RELATEDGrandma Accidentally Invites Stranger to Thanksgiving, Tells Him to Come Anyway

“When I opened the Enoteca, I was really grief-stricken,” says Jody. “It was comforting to have these grandmothers cooking in the kitchen. You know, the would pinch my cheek or say ‘do you wanna try this’, and at that point I realized that what we were doing was much bigger than I thought it was going to be. When you walk through the restaurant – and you really listen to the people you pass by – they’re talking about their mothers or talking about their grandmothers.”

“It kind of evokes a trip down memory lane.”

India Doubles Paid Maternity Leave, Making it 3rd Best Worldwide

Pregnant Indian Woman-CC Philippe Put

The Parliament of India has just passed a bill extending nationally mandated paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks.

The bill, which will reportedly benefit almost two million women in the organized working sector, will apply to all businesses that employ more than 10 workers.

The policy change also makes India the third best country in the world for paid maternity leave, trailing only Canada with 50 weeks of paid leave and Norway with 44.

However, the extended paid leave will only apply to the first two children. If a mother gives birth to a third, then the time off is cut back to 12 weeks.

“This is my humble gift to women, a day after the world celebrated the International Women’s Day,” said Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya.

Though Parliament members were arguing for similar benefits to be applied to new fathers as well, certain paid paternity leave policies either already exist at a state level, or are currently under negotiation.

Canadian Youth Braves Storm on Horseback to Deliver Food to Stranded Driver

Eileen Eagle Bears and Horse-Released

This 18-year-old woman is a shining example of Canadian kindness – and Canadian resilience to the cold.

Eileen Eagle Bears was warm and dry at home with her family during Monday’s blizzard near Brandon, Manitoba when highway cameras showed a trucker stuck in the snow on the side of highway 10.

Heartbroken by the driver’s situation on television, Eileen vowed to help.

The trucker, a Winnipeg driver named Peter Douglas, had had to spend Monday night in his truck waiting for the snow to clear up. On Tuesday morning, however, he awoke to an unusual surprise.

RELATEDWoman Saves Policeman From Attacker on the Side of the Road

Eileen had trekked two and a half miles on horseback – and some of the distance on foot due to the ice – so she could deliver a thermos of hot coffee to Peter.

Later that day, Eileen returned once more to give Peter water and a thermos of stew.

Peter was eventually towed, but he was still shocked that the youth underwent so much trouble just to help him out.

“She had to walk that horse half a mile up that hill and half a mile down because it was so icy. Blew me away,” Douglas told CTV. “She said she saw me on the camera. Her and her family were watching.”

Student Proves Sobriety to Cops by Using Special Skill (WATCH)

Juggling Student-Youtube

This university student could have simply been let off the hook with a busted brake light – but when police officers saw that he was also driving under the speed limit, he was pulled over into an empty parking lot.

While the boys in blue ran his license, the University of Central Arkansas student explained that he had just been on his way home when he was pulled over.

The cops asked him to step out of the vehicle so they could point out the busted brake light. Then, they noticed something unusual sticking out of the youth’s pocket.

Embarrassed, the student said that the item was in relation to him being an amateur magician.

The officers then became intrigued and asked if they could see some of the student’s stunts.

Without hesitating, the student pulled out three juggling mallets and handed his phone to the officer so he could film the exchange.

The Arkansas officers were then treated to quite a show for someone whom they had originally thought to be intoxicated.

High School Installs Washing Machines for Homeless Students

Washing Machine-CC Jim212Jim

Though it may seem like a fairly basic commodity, some of these high school students don’t have proper access to laundry machines.

That’s why East High School in Utah has just installed washing machines, dryers, and lockers for their homeless students.

According to KSL, the school plays host to 80 homeless students out of 2,000. Some of these students are caregivers residing in the local homeless shelter—others rely simply on couch surfing, staying at friend’s houses, or just sleeping in the streets.

Additionally, there are plenty of students whose families are simply too dysfunctional to do laundry.

The school’s family support specialist Kris Barta told KSL: “We are totally ready to open and I have a few kids who are totally ready for it to open, who have told me, ‘I am not homeless, but my family doesn’t put a priority on this or they are neglectful at home, so I am excited for the locker room/shower room to open up so I can do some laundry.’”

The Leopard Laundry room—as it is currently being called because of their mascot being a leopard—will also be equipped with donated shampoo, conditioner, detergent, towels, and free clothing for the taking.

RELATEDHigh School Kids Start Food Pantry to Keep Classmates From Hunger

School representatives say that if they want their students to succeed, their basic physical needs should be met—and they’re willing to help in every way that they can.

“They have too much on their plate to be successful students. So if we take some of that off by making sure they have food and clean, appropriate clothes to wear, maybe they can focus on their academic goals or what they want to do in their life, but most importantly stay in and finish high school,” Barta said.

Monastery Recruits Cute Fluffy Friar to Encourage Adoptions

Carmelo the Friar Dog-Facebook

This pawesome pupper is a prime example of this monastery’s teachings – and he’s adorable too.

The friars at this Franciscan monastery in Cochabamba, Bolivia worship St. Francis of Assisi; the patron saint of animals.

So in honor of their practices, they adopted Carmelo the dog – or “Friar Bigoton”, meaning “mustache” in Spanish.

The pup has become a beloved part of the monastery, spreading love, cuddles, and teaching to the pond’s local fish. Carmelo has even taken a liking to his new friar’s robes.

Carmelo used to be a stray before he was rescued by Proyecto Narices Frías – or “Cold Nose Project” in English.

“If only all the churches of our country adopt a dog and care for him like Friar Bigotón,” the group wrote in a post on Facebook, “we are sure that the parishioners would follow his example.”

Pregnant Woman Gives Man “Decent Dude” Award Statue For Giving Up Subway Seat

Decent Dude Statue Full-Instagram

Yvonne Lin had been carrying around a special surprise for the first man to offer her a seat on the subway – and though it took her two whole pregnancies, a winner finally emerged two weeks ago.

The 38-year-old designer noticed that throughout her entire first pregnancy, the only people offering her seats on the subway were black and Latino women.

So in preparation for the first “decent dude” who would offer her a seat, Yvonne had a little card made to offer in gratitude.

RELATEDCop Goes Undercover in Wheelchair to Make Arrests, Finds Kindness Instead

When the third trimester of her first pregnancy came and went without any luck, however, she decided to up the ante by making a little seven-inch trophy of a Hulk tearing his shirt off. Inscribed onto the trophy was the saying: “#1 DECENT DUDE. First man to offer subway seat to pregnant woman throughout Two Pregnancies.”

Finally, Yvonne was on the A train home from work when a young man who was playing on his phone looked up and noticed the mother standing in front of him. Without hesitating, he jumped out of the chair and said “Please take this seat, I just noticed.”

Though she wasn’t able to catch his name, Yvonne presented the young man with the statue, took a photo of him, and explained her social experiment. As the two chatted, the man said that he was also a father of two.

“I’m about 8ish months preggers (again) and I look it,” wrote Yvonne. “I’ve been gradually coming to the conclusion that men suck. I didn’t get a single subway seat offered to me by a man throughout my first pregnancy. So for the second pregnancy, I had this made and I’ve been carrying it around everyday – till last Friday. This guy is the winner!”

I Competed in a Beauty Pageant with Facial Paralysis

Olivia Raffaele Full-Magic Dreams Productions

Competing in pageants was never something that I ever thought I would do. Growing up, I was never a girly girl, and was not at all a model of self-confidence – so how did I manage to compete in a pageant with Bell’s palsy?

I ask myself all the time. ‘Self-confidence’ is something that is uttered in pageantry quite a bit, along with the phrase ‘beauty is on the inside’, or something like that. I will admit that I was one of those people, saying those cliché lines, knowing the meaning but not entirely understanding what it really meant. Thankfully, now I do, and hopefully my story is able to give you a bit of insight as to what being ‘beautiful on the inside’ really means.

One week before the 2016 National Finals of Miss Galaxy Australia, I woke up to the strangest feeling. Touching the side of my face, I felt pins and needles all over one side, down my neck and on my chest. That afternoon I was diagnosed with Bell’s palsy. Bell’s palsy is temporary paralysis of the face, neck, and chest. Sitting in the doctor’s office hearing him tell me this felt so surreal. Surely this couldn’t be happening? I have nationals next week? I don’t have any numbness or drooping? As the thoughts ran through my head I noticed that my eyes were not blinking at the same time. I frantically tried to blink it away and that is when it sunk in; it’s only going to get worse. In the process of a few days I lost complete sensation on the left side of my face, and I had no control of my left eye.

RELATED17-Year-Old Blind Pole Vaulter Wins Bronze at State Championship

Another visit to the doctor confirmed my condition but stated that the symptoms would not get much worse. Unfortunately for me, he was wrong. My speech became so slurred that I was unable to communicate properly, I could hardly eat or drink, my vision came blurred in one eye, my face completely drooped and the constant strain on my face gave me incredible migraines. Oh, and I couldn’t do my pageant smile either.

I am going to be brutally honest, even if I come across a bit shallow; I cried a lot. All of my hard work, in that moment, had seemed to be for nothing and my dream of being the next Miss Galaxy Australia seemed to fly right out the window. I am not beautiful like this. I am so embarrassed of myself, I look and sound horrific. I still competed though, oh yes, I did. As much as I was embarrassed and as much as I wanted to give up, I still went.

Now, walking into a room full of beautiful women, looking the way that I did, has to have been one of the hardest thing that I put my self-esteem through. How did I feel adequate in a room full of pageant beauties, looking the way that I did? I just lifted my head, wiped my tears and hoped that my time at finals would get better.

MORELane Bryant Challenges Victoria’s Secret By Redefining Beauty

Once I explained my condition to the other girls they were nothing but supportive of me. My sense of humor came out and I was able to thrive in a way that, the majority of the time, I forgot that I was even sick. However, the day that I was truly dreading was drawing near; pageant day. I still had to walk on stage in front of hundreds of people and perform like this. I was terrified, but I couldn’t back out now.

I was very surprised at how well I did to be very honest. I strutted and I walked, I spun and I had a really good time! After all, I was allowed to. I was able to walk on stage and have fun, with no expectations of how I should walk, or turn, or look. I was able to be myself without any judgement, and I felt so happy about it that I smiled my half-grimace half-smile with pride! On that night I rediscovered myself. From that point I could say that I was beautiful and that I was confident, on the inside.

You could still imagine my disbelief when I got called out as one of the top 15. It was the first time all week that I cried happy tears. The applause stunned and humbled me. My time at nationals ended with a bang and a lot of congratulations and praise. The week that I was dreading became one of the best weeks of my life.

Am I competing again, you ask? Of course! I will be returning to the Australia Galaxy Pageants National Stage again in April of this year and you bet that I will be back and better than ever. Keep an eager eye out, I may just be Miss Galaxy Australia 2017!

Anyway, the main point that I was trying to get across through my story was that confidence is beauty. HONESTLY! Not your face or your waistline or your $5,000 ball gown. It truly is you; and I just proved it.

Now You Can Drink Beer to Save Beaches Worldwide

Beer Bottle Sand-DB Breweries

Due to the high demand for sand in pharmaceuticals, construction, and engineering, two thirds of beaches worldwide are dramatically receding.

Thankfully, you can now have a beer in order to save sandy sanctuaries.

New Zealand-based company DB Breweries is encouraging their customers to drink beer in order to save beaches.

RELATEDWorld’s Largest 3D Printer Makes Almost Zero-Cost Homes Out of Mud

Why? Because they have constructed a machine that grinds empty beer bottles into pristine glass sand. All one has to do is place their finished beer bottle into the machine –instead of the recycling bin – and watch as their previously-used glass turns into one cup of pure sand.

“Kiwis, we love our beaches, and we love our beer,” said Sean O’Donnell, marketing director at DB Breweries. “So wouldn’t it be great if you could have a beer and do something for the environment? I mean, that’s pretty exciting.”

DB Breweries has struck up a handful of negotiations with construction companies and concrete manufacturers so as to ensure there will be now more theft of beach sand for future generations.

Thankfully, over 50,000 people from around the world were able to help save his life.

Buddy was seized after he attacked the psychotic woman who was causing harm to her son. During his attempt to fight off the woman, he accidentally bit the son being forced into the Murray River in Moama, on the New South Wales-Victoria border.

Area representatives decided that Buddy’s actions were in reasonable defense of the situation and the canine was not considered a danger.

“I just want to tell everyone that our boy buddy is coming home. He has a few things to get into place before he comes home, but the main thing is he is coming home,” wrote Jess. “We all can’t thank you enough for all you support in sharing and helping fundraise for him.”

Dying Writer Pens Heartfelt Plea For Someone to Marry Her Husband

Amy Krouse Rosenthal-Twitter

Amy Krouse Rosenthal was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015. Now, while lying on her deathbed, she has penned a “dating profile” for her husband in order to attract him a new lover in her stead.

Published as “You May Want To Marry My Husband” in the New York Times, the children’s book author says she only has days left “being a person on this planet”. With the time that she does have, however, she describes the character of her loving husband Jason Brian Rosenthal.

The couple first met 28 years ago on a blind date in Chicago that was set up by a mutual acquaintance.

“It was 1989. We were only 24,” says Amy. “I had precisely zero expectations about this going anywhere. But when he knocked on the door of my little frame house, I thought, ‘Uh-oh, there is something highly likable about this person.’”

RELATEDDaughter Fulfills Dad’s Last Wish With Side-Splitting Obituary

She goes on to describe her husband as “5-foot-10, 160 pounds, with salt-and-pepper hair and hazel eyes”.

Amy says that Jason is a sharp dresser, a good chef, an enthusiastic concert-goer, a compassionate father, an artist as well as a lawyer, and a very caring husband.

“Here is the kind of man Jason is: He showed up at our first pregnancy ultrasound with flowers. This is a man who, because he is always up early, surprises me every Sunday morning by making some kind of oddball smiley face out of items near the coffeepot: a spoon, a mug, a banana.”

“My guess is you know enough about him now. So let’s swipe right.”

Amy then makes it very clear that she wishes that she had more time with her devoted husband and children, but as fate would have it, she must now pass the gauntlet to someone else.

“I am wrapping this up on Valentine’s Day, and the most genuine, non-vase-oriented gift I can hope for is that the right person reads this, finds Jason, and another love story begins.”

Chance the Rapper Donating $1Mil to Chicago Schools

Chance the Rapper-Released

Chicago born and bred hip hop artist Chance the Rapper has announced that he will be donating $1 million to his home city’s public schools.

The announcement was made during a press conference at Westcott Elementary School on Monday, blocks from where Chance grew up as a young student.

The musician had reportedly sat down with Republican Gov. Rauner on Friday to discuss education funding after the governor vetoed a $215 million education funding initiative back in December. Chance was “flustered” after leaving the meeting, saying he had been given “a lot of vague answers” without any compromise in sight.

“Illinois’ education system is one of the most severely underfunded in the nation. After years of being underfunded, the Chicago Public Schools system has been forced to cut teachers, supplies, and after school programs,” said the artist in a statement. “Despite having already cut $260 million in costs internally, CPS was left a $215 million gap in their budget as of May 2016”

“To prevent further irreparable damage, the only solution is for the Governor to sign the bill allocating these necessary funds to CPS, and then working with the General Assembly to pass a budget and education funding reform.”

MORER E S P E C T – Aretha Franklin to Pay For Hotel Rooms For Flint Families

“As a CPS graduate, Chance has shown Chicago students not only the heights they can achieve but the generosity they can share,” school district spokesperson Emily Bittner said in a statement. “We also appreciate his strong advocacy for Chicago schoolchildren, who suffer under the state’s discriminatory system of funding, which Gov. Rauner continues to perpetuate.”

Several celebrities have come out in support of Chance’s campaign, including the former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama.

“Thanks [Chance] for giving back to the Chicago community, which gave us so much,” said the First Lady. “You are an example of the power of arts education.”

Physician Invents Reconstructive Surgery For Female Genital Mutilation

There is new hope for the hundreds of millions of women worldwide who have been subjected to genital mutilation.

A surgeon in Penn Medicine’s Center for Human Appearance has developed a reconstructive procedure that can increase sexual function and, patients’ early experiences suggest, help heal the emotional and psychological wounds associated with the mutilation. Ivona Percec, an assistant professor of Surgery in the division of Plastic Surgery, reports on her use of the technique in three patients this month in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal. She also calls for greater awareness of this human rights issue in support of women who’ve suffered these experiences across the world.

“Plastic surgeons have a crucial role to play in this recovery, and it’s important for physicians to be informed and prepared to address the surgical and emotional needs of women who seek care for this,” Percec said. “Our procedure is simple yet effective and can help victims restore their physical and psychological sense of well-being.”

RELATEDFormer Child Brides Win Case in Court: Zimbabwe Bans Child Marriage

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as, “any procedure that intentionally alters or causes injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons and with no health benefits.” An estimated 200 million women have been subjected to FGM around the world, usually between the first week of life and adolescence, and often by their caregivers. It is a cultural ritual in parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia to encourage female sexual fidelity. It is internationally recognized as a violation of human rights.

FGM can also have long-term consequences, including severe pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, cysts, recurrent infections, and even death.

All three women were between the ages of 30 and 33 and had recently immigrated to the United States from Sierra Leone. In each case, the women were married but had not told their husbands they had undergone FGM as children.

MOREPresident of Gambia Bans Female Genital Mutilation

“These women were embarrassed that they were subjected to this procedure, in particular since relocating to the United States,” Percec said. “All of them were able to have intercourse, but without pleasure – usually with pain.”

The patients wanted to know if there were any surgical options available to help them look and feel more normal. After Percec’s research turned up little in the way of established procedures, she used her knowledge of other reconstructive techniques in hopes of restoring appearance and function.

With an average follow up of almost a year, all three patients reported improved sexual function and decreased embarrassment with their partners. All three women said they would recommend this procedure to others who have suffered FGM.

“Female genital mutilation is a violation of the basic rights of women and children,” Percec said. “As nations around the world work to eliminate this custom, plastic surgeons can play an important role in the physical, emotional, and psychological recovery of women everywhere.”

Who needs to go to Six Flags when you can have your own private roller coaster in your back yard?

The Dad of the Year award goes to Scott Brazelton for building a miniature roller coaster for his 3-year-old son Wyatt.

The Navy pilot spent several weeks building the 140-foot long ride out of PVC pipe and lumber in the backyard of their home in Whidbey Island, Washington.

Scott had originally been reading up on do-it-yourself online plans explaining how to build a treehouse – but then he found instructions on something far more interesting: building mini rollercoasters.

“I studied engineering in college a little bit,” Brazelton told the Whidbey Times. “I wouldn’t say it’s any special ability on my part. It’s very convenient nowadays to go online and pretty much learn how to do anything. You can tile a house or you can do something as crazy as this.”

Dog Completes Hardest Race in the World Just to Find a Home (WATCH)

Mikael and Arthur-ESPN

This unbelievably strong-willed pooch went through hell and high water just so he could find a home with Mikael Lindnord.

Back during the 2014 Adventure Racing Championship in Ecuador, Mikael was competing in the relay as the captain of a four person team. The team would be biking, paddling, and hiking across 435 miles of the world’s most treacherous terrain.

While they were gearing up at a checkpoint located a portion of the way through the race, they were joined by an unlikely visitor: a mangy dog rife with wounds and dirty fur.

RELATEDRunner Raises Money to Adopt Pup After Completing 7-Day Race Together

Saddened by the pup’s appearance, Mikael fed him some meatballs before the team headed out on the trail once more.

As they hiked, they noticed that they were being followed by none other than the mangy canine himself.

Despite the difficulties of the landscape, the hound kept up with Mikael’s team for even the most dicey escapades. When the group got stuck in mud, the dog was close behind. When they started paddle boarding down the river, he jumped in to swim after them until they pulled him aboard.

Inspired by his perseverance, Mikael decided to name him King Arthur.

The team eventually finished in 12th place – but in exchange for the rank, they had been given a life-changing experience; one that Mikael did not take lightly.

If Arthur was left in Ecuador, he most likely would die of his wounds or be attacked by locals. So the Swedish resident flew his new companion 6,455 miles all the way back to his home nation for adoption.

After being treated for his injuries and quarantined by country officials, Arthur was given a loving home.
