Organizations Learn Cheap Tattoo Removal to Help Inmates Get Jobs

Worker-Jails to Jobs

Each year, more than 800,000 people are released from federal and state prisons, and an estimated 22% – that’s 176,000 – have visible tattoos. Often, these tattoos—many of which are anti-social or gang-related—prevent previously incarcerated individuals from finding a job. As a result, they’re likely to end up right back in prison, costing state and federal governments billions of dollars each year, not to mention the price of productive lives lost.

Although many of those leaving prison would like a fresh start tattoo-free, getting the ink removed is prohibitively expensive. That’s where San Francisco Bay Area based nonprofit Jails to Jobs comes in.

The organization has created a training program to teach medical professionals, tattoo artists, nonprofit organizations, correctional facilities, and governments how to create a free or low-cost tattoo removal program to serve the communities in which they operate.

MOREAustralian Tattoo Artist Offers to Cover Up Self-Harm Scars For Free

“We see that as many as four out of five previously incarcerated individuals who successfully find a job do not return to prison,” said Mark Drevno, founder and executive director of Jails to Jobs. “Keeping someone out of prison costs much less than sending them back, yet we as a nation, have primarily focused on trying to fix overcrowded prisons. A better, more sustainable approach is to help individuals remove visible anti-social or gang-related tattoos, get jobs and turn their lives around.”

The program is not just limited to those working with previously incarcerated and formerly gang-involved men and women. Victims of human trafficking are often tattooed with names, gang signs, or even barcodes. And those in abusive relationships are sometimes forcibly tattooed by their significant others.

This cheaper option of tattoo removal will give thousands of people the fresh start that they need.

“Many years ago, with a bit of trepidation, I hired a previously incarcerated formerly drug addicted homeless man as a sales rep for the company I owned,” Mark told Good News Network. “He turned out to be a very loyal employee and quite good at his job and made me realize that there must be countless people out there who’ve been in prison and just need someone to give them a chance to get their lives back together.”

“I never forgot that man. He – along with mostly my mother who was widowed at age 43 with nine children to raise and who spent the rest of her life working to serve disadvantaged people – were the inspirations behind the creation of Jails to Jobs.”

Police Rescue Over 6,000 Turtles in Largest Wildlife Bust in the Nation

flap-shelled-turtle-cc-l-shyamal

In what is being called the “largest ever wildlife haul in the country”,  more than four tons of endangered turtles were rescued by police who busted a smuggling ring in India earlier this week.

6,430 freshwater flapshell turtles were discovered stuffed into 140 jute bags in Uttar Pradesh on the way to Southeast Asia.

RELATEDManatee Population Has Rebounded 500 Percent, No Longer Endangered

“Wildlife authorities confirmed that this is the largest haul in the country’s wildlife history, both in terms of number and weight — 4.4 tonnes,” Arvind Chaturvedi, head of the state’s Special Task Force that rescued the turtles, told AFP.

Though flapshell turtles are protected by the Endangered Species Act, thousands are smuggled out of the country every year. Their meat and shells typically sell for 1,000 to 8,000 rupees ($14 to $117), depending on the size.

Students Transform School Bus Into Gift for Teacher’s Developmentally Challenged Daughter

Before and After School Bus-Jessi Smith

12-year-old Gabrielle Howell is the beloved daughter of a high school teacher – so when all she wanted for Christmas was her own school bus for playtime, her mother’s students decided to rise to the occasion.

Diagnosed with a rare brain disorder known as bilateral periventricular nodular heterotopia, which causes Gabrielle to mentally develop much slower than other children. Although she exhibits the mind of a 3-year-old, Gabby is still adored by all her mom’s students.

Teacher Amy Howell mentioned the unusual school bus gift request in passing to her health care class at Gallatin High School. One of the students, Jessica Smith, decided to investigate the possibility of actually finding a school bus for the family.

RELATEDTeen Creates ‘Sit With Us’ App For Bullied School Children

Once she discovered a local bus for sale, Jessica created a GoFundMe campaign to cover its purchase and the costs for renovation. She next had the vehicle towed to the school’s football field where a team of volunteers worked every day to revitalize the shabby machine.

By the time Christmas Eve rolled around, the students – with a little help from Santa – had parked the bus in the Howell family’s yard. What was once a crumbling hunk of junk had become a cozy little clubhouse complete with chairs, art supplies, curtains, and carpeting. Gabby has reportedly barely left the sanctuary since its delivery on Christmas.

Jessica, meanwhile, reflected that she was just happy to help the teacher and her family.

“She really goes above and beyond every single day for her students. She stays after hours, she works through her lunch,” Jessica told Today. “[And Gabby] is so sweet and wants to give everybody hugs. She’s just friends with everybody.”

CVS is Now Offering Allergy Medication at 1/6th the Cost of the EpiPen

Epipen-CC GregFriese

Over 9,000 different CVS branches nationwide are now carrying generic versions of the Adrenaclick auto-injector, an allergy medication similar to the EpiPen currently marketed by Mylan, but at 1/6th of the cost.

Mylan has been criticized for hiking the price of the life-saving drug by 500% since 2007. Though Adrenaclick is not the same as Mylan’s EpiPen, patients may be able to access the generic dual pack at CVS for $109.99 – as opposed to the outrageous price of $600 – with permission and consultation from their doctors.

Over the past year, nearly 150,000 people signed on to a petition asking for a lower cost epinephrine auto-injector option and millions more were active on social media searching for a solution.

Student Invents Smart Gun that Could Prevent Hundreds of Accidents

Smart Gun-Youtube

This MIT student may only be 19 years old, but he’s working on a revolutionary project that could save hundreds of lives.

Kai Kloepfer is working on the prototype of a smart gun that can only be fired by the owner. Thousands of gun-related deaths in America are either from child accidents or suicides that are committed with firearms that don’t belong to them. Using fingerprint recognition similar to the iPhone, a smart gun would prevent anyone else but the intended user from firing the weapon.

The final prototype is designed to unlock in 0.5 seconds and relock even faster. The battery life will last for one year per single charge. The fingerprint authentication can also be programed to recognize multiple users.

RELATEDSimple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

“I started developing this technology at the age of 15 after I started to realize just how much of a problem we have with gun violence – and the lack of any feasible solution,” says Kai. “Therefore I have spent the last three years actively engaged in the smart firearm discussion as a public speaker, working with media and doing other outreach to help eliminate misunderstandings as well as to learn from my customers what they need in a smart gun.”

Kai operates his organization – known as BioFire – out of his parent’s house in Boulder, Colorado. He has received funding to develop the smart gun from Ron Conway, a “super angel” of Silicon Valley and an early investor in Facebook and Google.

“Kai is the Mark Zuckerberg of guns,” Conway said. “What Kai has done is used all of the latest technology available us to innovate a truly authenticated gun. You couldn’t do this five years ago.”

Heavy Rains and Snow Helping California Out of Drought

Lake Tahoe-CC Bill Strong

The years-long drought in California is finally coming to a close thanks to ongoing statewide torrential rainfall and snow.

In January 2016, 97% of the state was suffering from drought – one year later, 40% of California has emerged from the punishing weather conditions.

Lake Tahoe, the largest freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada, has risen one foot since the New Year. That’s equal to about 33.6 billion gallons of water with more rain and snowfall expected in the coming weeks. The lakes levels had reportedly reached record lows amidst the drought a few years previously.

The rest of Northern California is apparently enjoying the heaviest snow its had in 6 years. The flood gates of the Sacramento River were reportedly opened for the first time in 12 years.

Southern California, while it is still technically in drought, is expected to be much less harsh as the relieving weather conditions continue.

Gov. Jerry Brown plans to elaborate on the state of drought emergency that he declared in 2014 after the wet season is over.

Couple Gives Back to Homeless Man Who Offered His Coat in the Cold

Taylor and Charlotte-Facebook

Charlotte Ellis and her boyfriend Taylor Waldon only went out to get a few drinks – they weren’t expecting to return with a homeless friend.

On January 4th, the couple was returning from a night out in Covent Garden, London when they missed their train home to Essex. The next train would not arrive for another four hours and the weather was brutally cold.

That’s when Charlotte heard a voice from behind her, saying “You can burrow my coat and duvet if you want? It’s a long wait and it’s freezing tonight.”

The voice belonged to a homeless man known only as Joey.

“I jump straight under the duvet and thank Joey for his kind offer as Taylor gives me the look,” says Charlotte. “After Taylor and I sat with Joey waiting for our train, there was just something about him that was so sincere I couldn’t leave him out there on his own.”

Charlotte asked her new friend if he would like to stay with her and her mother for the night, complete with a shave, a shower, and a hot meal. Though he was reluctant at first, her earnest tone finally convinced him.

“No one deserves to be out in these conditions. I’m not saying that you should trust everyone you meet on a street corner, but who exactly should you trust?”

Smart Watches Can Detect Illness, Diabetes, and Disease

Smart Watch-Foter

Can your smart watch detect when you are becoming sick? A new study from Stanford indicates that this is possible.

By following 60 people through their everyday lives, Stanford researchers found that smart watches and other personal biosensor devices can help flag when people have colds and even signal the onset of complex conditions like Lyme disease and diabetes. “We want to tell when people are healthy and also catch illnesses at their earliest stages,” said Michael Snyder, senior author of the study.

Smart watches and similar portable devices are commonly used for measuring steps and physiological parameters, but have not generally been used to detect illness. Snyder’s team took advantage of the portability and ease of using wearable devices to collect a myriad of measurements from participants for up to two years to detect deviations from their normal baseline for measurements such as heart rate and skin temperature. Because the devices continuously follow these measures, they potentially provide rapid means to detect the onset of diseases that change your physiology.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

Many of these deviations coincided with times when people became ill. Heart rate and skin temperature tends to rise when people become ill, said Snyder. His team wrote a software program for data from a smart watch called ‘Change of Heart’ to detect these deviations and sense when people are becoming sick. The devices were able to detect common colds and in one case helped detect Lyme disease–in Snyder, who participated in the study.

“I had elevated heart rate and decreased oxygen at the start of my vacation and knew something was not quite right,” said Snyder. After running a low-grade fever for several days, Snyder visited a physician who confirmed the illness. Snyder took the antibiotic doxycycline and the symptoms disappeared. Subsequent tests confirmed the presence of Lyme. The smart watch and an oxygen sensor were useful in detecting the earliest signs of illness.

This research paves the way for the smart phone to serve as a health dashboard, monitoring health and sensing early signs of illness, likely even before the person wearing it does.

CHECK OUTBold Trials to Kill Vicious Cancer Type is So Successful, FDA Will Fast Track to Patients

In addition to detecting illness, the study had several other interesting findings. Individuals with indications of insulin resistance and who are therefore are at high risk for Type 2 diabetes are often unaware that they have this risk factor. Personal biosensors could potentially be developed into a simple test for those at risk for Type 2 diabetes by detecting variations in heart rate patterns, which tend to differ from those not at risk.

Another interesting finding of the study is an effect that impacts many of us. The authors found that blood oxygenation decreases during airplane flights. Although this is a known effect, the authors were able to characterize it in greater detail than has been previously reported. Snyder’s team found that reduced blood oxygenation typically occurs for a large fraction of a flight and further demonstrated that this is associated with fatigue. “Many of us have had the experience of feeling tired on airplane flights,” Snyder said. “Sometimes people may attribute this to staying up late, a hectic work schedule, or the stress of travel. However, it is likely that cabin pressure and reduced oxygen also are contributors.”

“The information collected could aid your physician, although we can expect some initial challenges in how to integrate the data into clinical practice,” said Snyder. For example, patients may want to protect the privacy of their physiologic data or may want to share only some of it.

Faithful Dog Saves Injured Owner From Freezing Temperatures

Dog and Patient-KCRA

This devoted pup is being hailed as a hero after he saved his owner from freezing temperatures.

Bob went outside on New Year’s Eve to get more firewood when he slipped and injured his neck. Unable to move, he could do nothing but lay on the ground in twenty four degree weather.

Kelsey, Bob’s Golden Retriever, lay on top of his arms and legs to keep him warm. After she stayed on top of her owner for a full day, Bob fell unconscious. One hour later, he was found by a neighbor who came by the house to borrow some eggs.

RELATEDDog Spends Days Protecting Injured Pup From Passing Trains

“”The last thing he remembers saying is telling Kelsey that he was so sorry, that he tried as hard as he could to stay alive,” Bob’s daughter Jenny told KCRA. “He wasn’t sure by the end, he remembers losing consciousness and kind of putting his head to the side and saying ‘ I gave it all I could give it’ and that was it. We think about one hour later is when [the neighbor] came and found him.”

Bob was rushed into neurosurgery and successfully saved. Medical officials say that if it wasn’t for Kelsey, Bob wouldn’t have made it.

First Ever Study Shows Chair Yoga is Effective Arthritic Treatment

chair-yoga-florida-atlantic-university

For the millions of older adults who suffer from osteoarthritis in their lower extremities (hip, knee, ankle or foot), chair yoga is proving to be an effective way to reduce pain and improve quality of life while avoiding pharmacologic treatment or adverse events.

A new study, conducted by researchers at Florida Atlantic University, is the first randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of chair yoga on pain and physical function in older adults with osteoarthritis.

For the study, researchers randomly assigned 131 older adults with osteoarthritis to either a chair yoga program or a health education program. Participants attended 45-minute sessions twice a week for 8 weeks. Researchers measured pain, pain interference (how it affects one’s life), balance, gait speed, fatigue and functional ability, before, during, and after the sessions.

RELATEDCheck Out This Yoga Studio Made Entirely of Salt

Results from the study found that participants in the chair yoga group, compared to those in the health education program, showed a greater reduction in pain and pain interference during their sessions, and that reduction in pain interference lasted for about three months after the 8-week chair yoga program was completed. The 8-week chair yoga program also was associated with reductions in fatigue and improvement in gait speed during the study session, but not post session.

“With osteoarthritis-associated pain, there is interference in everyday living, limiting functional and social activities as well as diminishing life enjoyment,” said Juyoung Park, Ph.D., co-author and co-principal investigator of the study. “The effect of pain on everyday living is most directly captured by pain interference, and our findings demonstrate that chair yoga reduced pain interference in everyday activities.”

Regular exercise has proven to help relieve osteoarthritis pain, however, the ability to participate in exercise declines with age, and many dropout before they can even receive benefits. Although the Arthritis Foundation recommends yoga to reduce joint pain, improve flexibility and balance, and reduce stress and tension, many older adults cannot participate in standing exercises because of lack of muscle strength, pain and balance as well as the fear of falling due to impaired balance. Chair yoga is practiced sitting in a chair or standing while holding the chair for support, and is well suited to older adults who cannot participate in standing yoga or exercise.

MOREQuiet Time Program Brings Radical Improvement To Schools Worldwide

“Currently, the only treatment for osteoarthritis, which has no cure, includes lifestyle changes and pharmacologic treatments that are not without adverse events,” said Ruth McCaffrey, co-author and emeritus professor in FAU’s College of Nursing. “The long-term goal of this research is to address the non-pharmacologic management of lower extremity osteoarthritis pain and physical function in older adults, and our study provides evidence that chair yoga may be an effective approach for achieving this goal.”

The overall goal of this interdisciplinary program is to decrease pain, and improve physical and psychosocial functions of elderly individuals with osteoarthritis who are unable to participate in other exercise and yoga programs.

65K Streetlights in Detroit Illuminate Exciting New Growth

streetlights-cc-koijots

One month ago on December 8th, Detroit representatives held a ceremony to illuminate the city with 65,000 newly-installed streetlights.

As a result of the Michigan city filing for bankruptcy in July 2013, most of Detroit’s 88,000 streetlights were broken. Many of the fixtures were vandalized by residents hunting for copper wire to sell. In 2014, an exit strategy for the city’s financial crisis was approved by Judge Steven W. Rhoades.

After four years of hard work and collaboration with Governor Rick Snyder’s office and the Obama administration, Detroit now has street lighting that meets the national standard.

RELATEDThe “Detroit Mower Gang” Cleans Up the City All Year for the Kids

The Detroit Public Lighting Authority was proud to finish the $185 million project ahead of schedule and under budget. The lights have been upgraded to LED fixtures, which reportedly makes Detroit the largest city in the USA with 100% LED public lighting. The copper wiring was also replaced with aluminum to prevent vandalism.

“When I walk the streets here, there’s a sense of hope and a sense of progress that is tangible,” Shaun Donovan, President Barack Obama’s budget director, told the Detroit Free Press. “There are lots of measures you can look at, one of the most important would be to see that the city starts to grow, and I think we’re very, very close to that.”

Though it’s only a small step in the right direction, the brightness that now floods the streets is a powerful physical manifestation of the city’s hopeful future.
