One in Three Americans Now Consider Meditation to Be Essential for the Perfect Morning, Says Poll

Coffee, exercise, and meditation now beat catching up on the news when it comes to the perfect morning ritual, according to a new poll of 2,000 Americans.

The survey sought to explore people’s morning routines and lifestyles, with questions about how people most wished to spend their time.

With the self-care movement in full advance, Americans are embracing the concept of activities like meditation for the contemplative and mood-elevating effects—and, in this poll, 36% said that their perfect morning would include setting aside time to meditate, calling it an essential element.

Similarly, 24% said yoga would definitely be in their morning routine.

Even more survey participants, 40 percent, said they include exercising first thing in the morning—before starting their workday or jumping into reading the news—as the best way to start a perfect day.

The survey, conducted by OnePoll in conjunction with Thermador, revealed that two-thirds of people (65%) are longing for more control of their mornings and 77% rate their mornings as busy.

One in five of the respondents said they are always in a rush even to get out of the door each morning.

THINGS AMERICANS DEEM ESSENTIAL TO START A DAY OFF PERFECTLY

1. Coffee (52%)
2. Tasty breakfast (41%)
3. Exercise (40%)
4. Meditation (36%)
5. Watch the news (33%)
6. Read the news (31%)
7. Listen to a podcast (27%)
8. Have a juice (26%)
9. Yoga (24%)

The trend toward self-care was also apparent in another core morning must-have: if given the opportunity to design their life, 26% would love to include juicing as a luxury priority.

Three quarters (74%) of those surveyed agreed that having more time in the morning would be a true luxury.

Time is such a precious commodity that even the slightest boost is welcomed. One in four respondents said simply having 10 extra minutes per day would make all the difference, while a mere 30 minutes was deemed the average response for the sample as a whole.

So, is the dream of having an “extra 30 minutes per day” attainable? The secret may lie in kitchen automation, said a Thermador spokesperson.

Most people agreed. When asked to consider the latest time-saving kitchen innovations—from fully automatic coffee machines, to dishwashers designed to complete a wash cycle in just 20 minutes—respondents estimated that they could save 27 minutes on average with a fully automated smart-home kitchen.

Toronto Garbage Trucks Will Soon Be Powered by Biogas From the Very Food Scraps That They Collect

All of the garbage trucks in Toronto will soon be powered by the biogas produced from the very trash they collect.

Toronto is set to be one of the first cities in North America to launch such an initiative, thanks to the their newly-constructed Dufferin Solid Waste Management Facility.

Starting in March 2020, the city’s fleet of garbage trucks will collect all of the organic waste and flood scraps from the Toronto Green Bins and bring them to the facility for processing. The facility will then use anaerobic digesters to capture all of the biogas produced by the waste and transform it into renewable natural gas (RNG).

CHECK OUT: The Largest Trash Collectors in the U.S. Have Stopped Shipping Waste to Poor Countries

After the scraps are dropped off at the facility, the city’s 170 garbage trucks can then immediately fill up their fuel tanks with RNG before heading out to collect more trash.

According to city officials, “RNG is also less expensive and more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels such as diesel. Once injected into the natural gas pipeline, it can be used to fuel vehicles or provide electricity or heat to homes and businesses.

“RNG generated from food waste is actually considered carbon-negative, because the reduction in emissions by not extracting and burning petroleum-based fuel, and the emissions avoided by not sending organics to landfill, exceed the direct emissions associated with the production and use of RNG.”

MORE: New Factory That Uses Enzymes to Recycle All Plastics At Once Has the Backing of Major Corporations

Reports say that 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in Toronto are generated by garbage, primarily food waste. Now, estimates suggest that the Dufferin facility will produce approximately 3.2 million cubic meters of RNG per year, which will save roughly 9,000 tonnes of CO2 from ending up in the atmosphere.

This closed-loop system is just one of the city’s four pre-planned waste-to-RNG production schemes for the coming years.

Meet the Man Who Has Broken 129 Guinness World Records in Just 4 Years

David Rush setting the world record for tortilla tossing—SWNS

Some people may only dream of holding at least one Guinness World Record in their lifetime—but this man has managed to break 129 records in just 4 years.

34-year-old David Rush spends the majority of his spare time smashing records that range from remarkable to bizarre.

He holds the official Guinness crown for farthest tortilla thrown (54 feet and 5 inches) and the farthest distance to blow a pea in one breath (41 feet and 3.5 inches).

He also holds the record for the fastest half-marathon while skipping, at two hours, 13 minutes and 41.8 seconds.

Rush, an MIT graduate with an electrical engineering degree, works full-time in the tech industry. He began pursuing his unusual hobby at the age of 29 as motivation to improve his juggling skills.

He now uses the media attention he receives for his record-setting talents to help promote his more academic passions in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The Boise, Idaho, resident first started juggling at the age of 8 and began training for his first record in 2013: the fastest 800-meter run while juggling—AKA “joggling.”

But during his last training session, disaster struck when he injured his knee.

“It was defeating,” said Rush.
“[I thought] How do I get over this hurdle? The human reaction is to give up.”

Instead of wasting time, Rush changed his mindset and chose to attempt world records that did not involve intense aerobic activity. In October 2015, after years of intense training, he achieved his first official record from Guinness for the longest duration of blindfolded juggling.

His time was 6 minutes and 34 seconds without dropping a ball—and he has since incorporated juggling into 19 of his world records.

“It was all muscle memory. I wasn’t thinking about it,” said Rush. “I never thought I could break a Guinness World Record. I had no idea I would go on to break more than one.”

While Rush usually benefits from the support of his friends and family, they often roll their eyes at the absurdity of his endeavors.

“My wife is the most supportive wife in the whole world. She comes to the events and takes pictures and videos,” says Rush. “But she has the Guinness record for the most eye rolls.”

Even though he works full-time for a tech company called Cradlepoint to promote STEM, Rush still finds plenty of time to plan new record attempts.

Evenings and weekends are spent researching records and training to make sure he is maximizing his time effectively.
“I pick a record and focus on that one, but in any given week I may be practicing 50 different records,” he said. “I am always looking at the Guinness book and their website.”

Rush says he is hoping to break at least 50 more world records in the near future, including most balloons popped in one minute by throwing chopsticks, most t-shirts worn during a half-marathon, and fastest time to drink a liter of lemon juice through a straw.

“I plan to remain doing this as long as I keep having fun,” says Rush.
“If you set your mind to a goal, believe in yourself, and pursue it with a passion, you can accomplish anything.”

New Antiviral Drug Shown to Be ‘Highly Effective’ in Treating All Flu Strains in Animals and Human Tissue

This new antiviral drug is highly effective in treating influenza infection in animals and human airway tissue by inducing mutations in the genetic material of influenza virus—and it could be a groundbreaking advance in influenza therapy.

According to a study by the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University, the antiviral drug blocks RNA polymerase, the enzyme that plays a central role in replicating the genome of influenza virus, causing mutations in the viral genome. If enough mutations occur, the genome becomes nonfunctional and the virus cannot replicate. The findings were published online in Science Translational Medicine last week.

“The compound is highly efficacious against influenza,” said Dr. Richard Plemper, senior author of the study and a professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences. “It’s orally available, it’s broad spectrum against all influenza virus strains tested, and most important it establishes a high barrier against viral escape from inhibition.”

Influenza, caused by a contagious respiratory virus, is characterized by fever, cough, headache, muscle and joint pain, severe malaise, sore throat and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms. Patients in higher risk groups, such as older adults and individuals with compromised immune systems, frequently require hospitalization. Each year, seasonal influenza results in 30,000 to 80,000 fatalities in the United States. The seasonal flu vaccine is only moderately effective, and licensed antivirals are compromised by rapidly emerging viral resistance to the drugs.

MORE: After 68% of Patients Were Cured of PTSD in Phase-2 Trials Clinics May Soon Offer MDMA Therapy

In the study, the new antiviral drug was tested in ferrets, the most informative animal model for human influenza disease, against various strains that include seasonal and pandemic viruses, such as the swine-origin influenza virus responsible for a 2009 pandemic. The researchers found that the antiviral drug efficiently inhibited replication of all of these strains. Virus burden dropped rapidly after treatment, and the duration of fever was significantly shorter in treated ferrets than in control animals that did not receive the drug.

“We think that the next generation of influenza antiviral drugs must not only be efficacious and safe, but also address the resistance problem,” said Dr. Mart Toots, first author of the study and a research assistant professor associated with Dr. Plemper’s lab in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences.

That is where the new drug comes in. Through a combination of conventional and ultra-deep sequencing, Toots has demonstrated in collaboration with Dr. Alex Greninger at the University of Washington that it is very challenging for the virus to find a viable way to avoid the compound.

CHECK OUT: First-of-its-Kind Alzheimer’s Drug is Pending FDA Approval After Patients Experienced Marked Cognitive Improvement

“We have not identified specific resistance mutations yet and are confident to say that the genetic barrier against viral resistance is high,” Plemper said. “We believe that this compound has high clinical potential as a next-generation influenza drug that combines key antiviral features.”

This research on the compound, EIDD-2801, emerged from collaboration among Georgia State’s Institute for Biomedical Sciences and researchers at The Emory Institute of Drug Development (EIDD) and Drug Innovation Ventures at Emory who originally discovered the compound.

EIDD-2801 has entered formal preclinical development and clinical testing is expected to start in 2020.

One-Legged Man Ties His Disability Into the Best Halloween Costumes Ever – Here’s His 2019 Genius

As a motivational speaker and comedian, Josh Sundquist has spent his life helping people look on the bright side of life—and for years, his Halloween pranks have helped him to look at the funny side of having only one leg.

“In high school I wore a prosthesis all the time and didn’t want anyone to find out I was missing a leg,” Sundquist says on his website. “But now I’m more comfortable with who I am and what I look like, and I guess with these Halloween costumes you could even say that I celebrate what makes me different.”

Sundquist, who lost his leg to a rare form of bone cancer at age nine, has dreamed up some seriously humorous costumes. In 2012, he was the one-legged lamp from A Christmas Story; in 2015, he dressed up as the sign for the IHOP restaurant; and in 2016, he dressed up in gold to become Lumiere, the candle-holder from Beauty and the Beast.

This year, Sundquist is hopping around on Halloween dressed as the iconic Pixar lamp.

That all being said, hilarious Halloween costumes aren’t Sundquist’s only talent—he has also published several books, attracted millions of views for his comedy on Youtube, and been a member of the US Paralympic Ski Team and the US Amputee Soccer Team.

Canada Now Has Its First Ever Tiny House Village for Homeless Veterans

Photo by Homes for Heroes Foundation

More than a dozen former members of the Canadian Armed Forces who have been forced to sleep on the streets will finally have proper roofs over their heads.

The “Homes for Heroes” Village in Calgary is the nation’s first housing complex built exclusively for homeless veterans—and its residents are ready to move in this weekend.

The village is made up of 15 houses, all of which have been equipped with everything from cable and internet to fully-functioning kitchens and outdoor decks.

The complex has also been equipped with additional on-site resources such as mental health support, counseling, career training, mentoring, case management, and even community gardens.

“Our team at the Homes For Heroes Foundation has met with hundreds of veterans who are in crisis and experiencing homelessness,” said Homes for Heroes Foundation president and co-founder David Howard.

“We wanted to build a program that can help them with a successful transition to civilian life. Our veterans are proud warriors, proud of their service, and proud to be citizens of Canada. They want a hand-up, not a hand-out. We listened to what they had to say, and we designed our foundation around meeting their needs.”

The village was built by ATCO, a Calgary-based global provider of integrated energy, housing, transportation and infrastructure solutions, through a $1.5 million in-kind donation.

Though this is the first village of its kind in Canada, the Homes for Heroes Foundation already has additional land agreements for more villages in Edmonton and Ontario.

“I expect this to end the issue of veterans experiencing homelessness and I think we can do that within a 12 to 13 year period,” Howard told Global News.

After Resale Store Worker Finds $7K Tucked into Secondhand Jacket, She Immediately Returns it to Owner

When this retail worker discovered $7,000 in cash tucked into the pocket of an old jacket, she knew she had to do the right thing.

Since Jennifer Kimes began working at the Plato’s Closet resell store in Valparaiso, Indiana two years ago, she says that she has found plenty of things tucked into the pockets of people’s old clothing—but this was certainly the most valuable thing she’d ever discovered.

“I mean, sometimes you find gum, or a picture, or a grocery list,” Kimes told WLS-TV. “You don’t find $7,000 in a pocket.”

Immediately after finding the wad of $20 and $100 bills, Kimes informed her manager of the discovery so they could both contact the man who had sold them the clothing.

The man had reportedly forgotten that he had hidden the emergency cash in the jacket pocket—so he was “overwhelmingly grateful” for its return.

Though there was apparently no reward for Kimes’s good deed, she and her manager agreed that “doing the right thing is rewarding intrinsically. It makes you feel good inside to do the right thing and there’s really nothing as special as feeling good inside.”

Lyft is Giving Free Rides to People On Their Way to Job Interviews and Training

Affordable transportation can be a huge obstacle for low-income workers pursuing new employment—which is why Lyft is now offering free and discounted rides to passengers who are starting at new jobs.

The company’s newly-launched Jobs Access Program will help to facilitate free transportation for unemployed people who are attending job interviews, job training, or their first three weeks of work prior to receiving their first pay check.

“Everyone needs access to reliable, affordable transportation—to get to work, visit the doctor, make it to school, or simply participate in city life,” the company wrote in a blog post. “In fact, a recent study pinpoints commuting time as the single strongest factor in the odds of escaping poverty. Our own study shows that 44% of Lyft rides start or end in low income areas, and that our passengers saved 178 million hours compared to other transportation modes.

“So we’ve partnered with several leading national and local organizations dedicated to workforce development in order to deliver free or discounted rides to people making their way through the employment pipeline.”

With the help of various nonprofit partners, the $50 million program is launching in more than 35 US and Canadian cities.

The program will also pay particular attention to vulnerable populations such as veterans and people with disabilities.

One of Lyft’s program partners is the National Down Syndrome Society. According to Ashley Helsing, NDSS’ Director of Government Relations: “There are roughly two million people living with disabilities in the United States. Of those two million, nearly 30 percent, or 560,000 people, are unable to leave their home because of transportation barriers. The ability to get around easily, especially for employment in the disability community, is crucial to the future.”

‘My Lucky Day’: Man Wins Top Lottery Prize On His Way to Last Chemotherapy Treatment

Ronnie Foster had already been in good spirits when he stopped at his local convenience store this month.

The retired DMV worker from Pink Hill, North Carolina had been on his way to the hospital so he could undergo his final round of chemotherapy treatments for colon cancer when he decided to buy some lottery tickets.

So imagine his delight when he spontaneously bought a few scratch-offs and found that he had won a $200,000 prize.

He scratched off the numbers for the first ticket and didn’t win anything. After he scratched off the numbers for the second ticket, however, he couldn’t believe his luck.

“I saw all those zeroes and I froze,” Foster said. “I didn’t believe it until I gave it to the clerk at the counter to scan. When it showed, ‘Go to lottery headquarters,’ I started shaking. I couldn’t believe it.”

High Schoolers Awarded for Inventing Inexpensive Device That Generates Electricity From Sound

Photo used with permission from the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas campus

A team of high school students have developed an inexpensive device that can generate electricity from sound.

The eleventh grade students from the Philippine Science High School-Western Visayas Campus (PSHS-WVC) say that the generator is like the opposite of a standard musical speaker; rather than using power to emit sound, the inside of the speaker is equipped with magnets and coils that generate electricity whenever they are hit by sound waves.

According to the Manila Bulletin, their “S-Light” invention only cost about $4 (P200 pesos), most of which was spent on capacitors.

The gadget typically only generates enough electricity to power a small light, but it could prove to be an invaluable source of energy and lighting for rural communities.

Additionally, the device’s technology can be scaled up to generate larger amounts of energy from noisy areas such as airport runways.

The five students and their invention were awarded the Silver Award for the 2019 Young Inventors Challenge. They now hope to use their education and technological experience to further develop the device and use it to help the Filipino people.

Nurse With No Experience Trading Stocks Wins $10,000 Playing a New Fantasy Stock Pick Game

A new fantasy stock game is rewarding people from all walks of life with cash prizes and building their confidence for a day that they might invest in the real-life stock market—and you don’t need to be a Wall Street trader to have a shot at winning the $10,000 monthly prize. A nurse from Ohio with no stock trading experience proved that to be true last month.

Pick5 was founded this year by Gregg Harrison, who decided to blend his favorite pastimes: fantasy sports and the stock market. A former investment banker, he wanted to create a game that was fun, fair, and easy to play. It’s free to enter, and free to play, for contestants who want to sign up and start trading a fantasy stock portfolio.

Each challenge—the next one begins Tuesday, October 29—lasts roughly 30 days, and pays out $13,000 in total cash prizes, with $10K going to the best trader. Gregg, from Orange County, California, says it’s too soon to expect profits, but the game is catching on—with 4000 players last month—and he’s excited by the continual growth. He earns money from sponsors, yet the webpage is uncluttered with ads, and very clean.

Early winners have included a parking valet in Miami, Florida, a Fed Ex employee from Sacramento, California, and Autumn Farely, the nurse from Coshocton, Ohio. (See Gregg surprise her with the check in a video below)

Asked what drew her to playing the game, the amateur stock trading grandmother told GNN, “I am always willing to try new things and I love contests and challenges . It is exciting to log on each morning and see what your portfolio looks like—I love seeing it ALL turn green!”

Playing the game taught her that holding on to her rising stock was the best move. “I went with companies that I was familiar with except for the selection of the penny stock. I watched those for a few days and went with the one that seemed to be on the rise….and it was the move that put me on the leaderboard.”

RELATED: Majority of Millennials Are Investing – and They’re Actually Quite Good At It

Gregg’s advice to players is to watch the sponsor companies closely. Financial news from these firms appear in a little box at the bottom of the screen.

“All of our sponsors are tiny companies, which means their price can be extremely volatile. In our last contest, one of our sponsor’s stock rose a whopping 66%,” he told GNN. “All three of our winners had that stock in their portfolio.”

He also advises players to trade often: “The way we calculate performance incorporates time. That means a 10% gain in a day, is worth far more than a 12% gain over 2 weeks. The best players will actively trade their portfolio to lock in gains.”

For Gregg, there’s “no better feeling” than when he presents someone with a check for $10,000.

Pick5 Media is also building an educational component, designed to work closely with business schools and promote investing skills. “We want to empower our community with knowledge about how to research stocks before making trades. We’re going to continue building out our education platform over the coming months.”

The rules are simple. Sign up and become a Portfolio Manager. Each PM holds a 5-stock lineup on any given day. Once the market opens (in this case, on Tuesday), your lineup is set for the day and cannot be changed. You can trade any of the stocks in your lineup, and trades will be executed when the market opens on the next business day. For example, if a PM owns Pepsi and after the market opens, the PM enters a trade to sell Pepsi and buy Coke. That lineup change will occur at the start of the next trading day.

RELATED: How to Approach Investments and Finance if You’re Scared of Talking About Money

When you sign up, you are required to give your full name, which would then be verified via federal identification, such as a drivers license, should you win. The reason they have strict rules about identification is to ensure that the player is a real person with only one account at a time. They regard someone opening 2 or 3 or 10 or 20 accounts as unfair and cheating.

“We don’t do anything with your personal info at all,” a company spokesperson pledged as he pointed to its privacy policy. “We will never share it or sell it. Gregg does look at zip codes and ages to see where and what age groups are playing to consider for marketing purposes, but that is only done in-house, and without names attached.” People can also opt out of getting news from sponsors, when they sign up.

The company expects the number of players will rise closer to 6000 in the round starting on Oct 28. There’s a counter on every player’s page that shows how many people are playing and what your ranking is, which makes it fun to see how you’re doing in comparison to others.

The fact that it’s so simple and clearcut is kind of in keeping with the mission: to demystify investing in stocks and give people the confidence to possibly get involved some day, at whatever level they’re able to.

ALSO: Best Investments, Bad Advice to Avoid, and Other Life Lessons

“When I first started the business, I honestly had no idea how profoundly this contest could impact our winners. Now all I want to do is reach more and more people with Pick5,” Gregg says. “I actually make the calls to winners on speaker phone so others in the office can listen. Their elation is contagious!”

After Adaptive Bike for Teen With Special Needs is Stolen, Watch the Community Step In To Help

Back in August, an adaptive bike belonging to a special needs teen was stolen from his backyard in the greater Phoenix area, but the community turned the “bitter” experience into a heartwarming one.

Photos by Stephanie Rankin, via Facebook

Beorn (fondly known as Bubba) was born with a genetic disease that left him non-verbal and in a wheelchair, but the bike allowed him to ride alongside his family.

Not only was his big tricycle crucial in his ongoing therapy, but it connected him to his family and other kids in the Mesa, Arizona neighborhood. With a price tag of several thousand dollars, Bubba’s mom, who is also parenting four other kids, was without options. So, she created a Facebook post.

Stephanie’s follow-up message describes what happened next:

“When all this started, I was upset someone had taken my boy’s bike and knew it would be years before I could replace it. I was disheartened, to say the least. I felt like there was no point in reporting the loss, but I’m so glad I was persuaded to do it. Instead of being a bitter experience, it has turned into this amazing thing I could have never of imagined. I was excited when we had over 100,000 shares – my mind is still blown!

“The overwhelming response of support and love for my boy brings me to tears.”

People offered to set up a GoFundMe page—and some offered to buy a new bike out right.

“I’ve heard many times ‘people suck,’ but I believe all this has proven just the opposite. Big hearts are what I’ve seen from all of this, and that’s my takeaway: most people are good and caring,” shared Stephanie.

An employee at AMS Vans, which supplies wheelchair accessible vehicles, saw Bubba’s story on the local news and noticed the family was driving an AMS van. He asked his senior managers how they could help, and the business immediately reached out to the family to offer a new bike, custom-built to Bubba’s needs.

“Our mission is to really provide independence through mobility solutions,” said general manager Randy Shiller. “While we do sell vans, Bubba’s independence was getting on the bike and riding with his brothers and sisters.”

Here Are the Top Childhood Dinner Table Rules That Parents Now Love to Break

A new poll confirmed that adults definitely enjoy owning their independence—and breaking all the rules that their moms busted them for in their youth.

The survey of 2,000 Americans found that sugary snacks before bedtime was a rule that was just too much fun to break, with 45% saying they do that. 37% percent even confessed to “living their best lives” and having dessert for dinner.

Not only would most vote for having a snack of ice cream throughout the day, but many looked forward to having pizza for lunch—and dinner.

Commissioned by Carvel and conducted by OnePoll, the survey found that 51% of respondents admitted to eating on the couch, and half ate breakfast food for dinner.

16 percent of respondents said they didn’t feel it necessary to finish all their vegetables, and so they left them on their plates.

Although some indulgences were commonly practiced by these adults, there were still behaviors that they secretly would love to do today: 43% wished they could just with their hands. More than a third have had an urge to blow bubbles in their drink, hide the food they don’t like, or give it to the dog.

And, almost one in three people wish they could just start throwing their food—true kids, at heart.

New Factory That Uses Enzymes to Recycle All Plastics At Once Has the Backing of Major Corporations

A French startup is poised to solve most of the world’s recycling conundrums with a new process that uses enzymes to break down the most problematic PET plastics (like contaminated black food trays) into a form so pure that it can be used to make clear water bottles that look and act like those made from petroleum.

The company, Carbios, envisions a circular plastic economy where nothing is wasted—and they have the money and backing from major global corporations to make it happen.

In the midst of an insanely productive year, the ‘biorecycling’ company secured two U.S. patents for its proprietary enzymatic process to break-down, purify, and reuse a wide array of PET plastic waste—only a small fraction of which is currently recycled. They plan to license the technology to recycling companies, and already have.

The green chemistry company wrapped up funding for the construction of a new recycling plant that will use enzymes to biorecycle—all at once, and in a few hours—multicolored plastic, like food trays or polyester shirts—for which the recycling rate is close to zero.

Another global problem is the sheer volume of recycled plastic needed to satisfy the many multinational consumer-products corporations that under extreme pressure to reduce their plastic waste.

Carbios is keen to satisfy the need and has established strategic partnerships with companies like Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo, L’Oréal, and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe, all of whom want to help get the recycling technology to market more quickly. The corporations are supporting the startup with funding and expertise.

Both Nestlé and L’Oréal believe Carbios’s technology will help the company reach their 2025 goals: 50% of their products’ plastic components will be recycled or bio-sourced.’

“They need more recycled materials… and they know that reaching those goals is impossible with the existing technologies,” says Martin Stephan, the company’s deputy CEO. “We will bring volumes by recycling material waste, which today is not recycled because they have low or no value.”

Currently, PET bottles, normally coded with the identification code number ‘1’ inside a recycling symbol on the bottom of the container, can be shredded and used to make lower grade products, such as carpets, Addidas shoes, and graduations gowns, but to make a food grade plastic, the bottles need to be hydrolyzed down to monomers, and then purified—which is exactly what Carbios does in a process they describe as an infinite loop.

To this end, in February 2019, Carbios announced it had successfully produced the first PET-bottles made with 100% Purified Terephthalic Acid, the organic compound used to make PET packaging and products, through the enzymatic recycling of plastic waste. This major milestone is a world-first and confirms the potential of the company’s technology to engage the whole industry in a responsible transition towards a circular economy.

They have also begun tackling the normally-unrecyclable plastic film problem. In an alliance with several other European companies under the name Carbiolice, they have demonstrated a plastic film that can be compostable in home or municipal compost piles. Their objective next year will be to address the markets of plastic films and carrier bags—and later on, rigid packaging and disposable tableware.

“These milestones reinforce our ambition to offer the market circular economy solutions that are both competitive and eco-friendly, and which will revolutionize the end of life for plastics and textiles.”

The company says its enzyme process uses lower temperatures than other new tech, which use biological processes to break down plastic, which reduces energy consumption—and it doesn’t use solvents.
