“Suffering was my soulmate,” Now He Inspires Millions With His Smile

The Lesson: When people complain about petty issues, Sai Kaustuv wants them to know that no problem is unconquerable. The next time they lack the motivation to solve their problems and feel like giving up, they can remember how he managed to overcome his own struggles of being disabled—all by using a single finger.

Notable Excerpt: “If you really want be successful, transform your adversities to opportunities. There are thousands of things to complain about but there are millions of things to be grateful for. We often fail to see the big picture of our lives and blame others. Try to focus on your can ‘dos’ rather than ‘can’t dos.’ You will then see your hidden potential within you. Think out of the box and do something extraordinary! Miracles happen in the lives of people who choose to create that miracle; I chose this miracle and made it happen in my own life [so I could] inspire many more like me to choose the best in their lives.”

The Guest: Sai Kaustuv Dasgupta, also known as the ‘Wheelchair Warrior of India,’ is an outspoken advocate for how ‘disability is not an inability.’ He is an Asia Book of World Record Holder, and a self-taught international graphic designer, a singer and composer, and TEDx and motivational speaker.

Suffering from osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), Kaustuv has endured more than 50 fractures, as well as hearing impairment. Despite being 90% disabled, he still manages to create international designs with just one finger of his left hand, and has inspired millions of global leaders, scholars, doctors, students, and young professionals with online and live sessions of his motivational talks and happiness coaching.

Podcast: Join his #HappinessUnlimited movement through a Youtube channel, and follow his social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn) for more updates about his inspiring journey.

Books: 27-year-old Kaustuv is the author of “My Life, My Love, My Dear Swami,” which he wrote entirely with the help of a virtual on-screen keyboard. The book has already been translated into nine different Indian languages since it was published in 2015.

Watch Officer Surprise Mother of Fallen Soldier With Son’s Prized Possession #TBT

Back in 2015, Officer John Baggs went above and beyond the call of duty so he could surprise the mother of a fallen soldier with a special gift on Veteran’s Day.

The gift was a car that had once belonged to Army Specialist Jose Torre who had died while he was serving in Iraq in 2011.

After Jose passed away, his mother Candida, who is from Huntington Beach, California, had an emotional connection to the car because it always made her think of her son.

So when she got in a car accident that ended up totaling the vehicle, she was heartbroken to hear that the insurance company would be unable to fix it.

Baggs, who had been a responder to the collision, was moved by the woman’s predicament. So with a little help from Triple-A and 27 different car repair employees giving 120 hours of service, the officer managed to orchestrate the $15,000 repair in time to unveil the renovated car for Candida on Veteran’s Day.

“With all my heart, it means a lot to have it back, it really does,” Torre told KCAL.

“It’s nice to know that there are people in the world that have good hearts, that are willing to pay it forward,” she added.

Walmart is Offering Workers and Their Family Members the Chance to Get College Degrees Debt-Free

Walmart is rolling out a new educational benefit that will give full and part-time workers the chance to pursue a debt-free college degree.

The company has partnered with Guild Education to offer all of their U.S. employees and eligible family members the opportunity to pursue an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business or supply chain management. The courses will be taught through University of Florida, Brandman University and Bellevue University, all of which can be attended online or on campus.

Under the program, the associate contribution toward a college degree would be just $1 a day, while Walmart will subsidize the cost of tuition, books and fees. The company, which is America’s largest private employer estimates that over 68,000 employees will sign up for the program.

According to Bloomberg, there will be “no penalty for courses already taken if an employee leaves the company while enrolled in school” and there will also be “no requirement to continue working at Walmart for any period after receiving the degree.”

RELATEDWorld’s Second Largest Fast Food Chain Begins Phase-Out of Plastic Straws

Additionally, the program offers discounted courses at over 80 different accredited universities, as well as free educational coaching and financial aid assistance.

The initiative is just one of many benefits recently launched by Walmart to reduce employee turnover, such as new parental leave policies, a new $11 minimum wage, and adoption benefits.

“Investing in the personal and professional success of our associates is vital to Walmart’s future success,” said Walmart CEO Greg Foran. “We know training and learning opportunities empower associates to deliver for customers while growing and advancing in their careers.”

Generator That Creates Electricity From Gravity Could Revolutionize Renewable Energy

A Dutch inventor has successfully created a contraption that generates electricity from gravity – and it could revolutionize the future of renewable energy.

Janjaap Ruijssenaars of Gravity Energy Ltd. recently finished the prototype of his gravity energy generator.

RELATEDTesla’s Giant Record-Breaking Battery Shows Stunning Success By Saving Consumers Millions

The generator works by unbalancing a weight so that gravitational energy becomes available as input to a piezo generator. This means that a gentle breeze is enough to generate the electricity.

In this video interview with Reuters, Ruijssenaars says that his generator could reach up to 93% energy efficiency.

The Amsterdam-based company was purchased by angel investor Jeroen van den Hamer, who said: “The high efficiency in comparison to existing sustainable methods such as wind turbines and solar panels caught our attention. This could be a game changer.”

Boy Stops Traffic So He Can Help Elderly Stranger Climb a Set of Stairs

A young boy is being praised for the kindness that he showed an elderly stranger when she was having trouble navigating a set of stairs with her walker.

8-year-old Maurice Adams Jr. from Milledgeville, Georgia was driving home from a high school graduation with his mom and sister when he saw an older woman slowly making her way across the busy street. At the end of the crosswalk, there was a set of stairs which the woman would have to climb with walker in hand.

Maurice was saddened by the fact that the woman was alone – so he asked his mother if he could get out of the car to help the senior.

His mother, of course, said yes.

Maurice then hopped out of the car, went up to the woman, and helped her up the steps. When they reached the top, the woman hugged Maurice and gave him a simple message: “You’re special.”

Little did Maurice know, a man named Riley Duncan was watching the exchange from a nearby car. Touched by the boy’s kindness, he whipped out his phone and took a video. He then sent the footage to WSB-TV, where viewers hailed the boy’s good deed.

Maurice’s proud mother, Contricia Hill, told the news outlet: “It’s touching. It’s very touching. [It just shows how] respect and raising your kids right goes a long way.”

Teacher Sets Up Snack Shop in School Hallway to Boost Performance of Anxious Students

People are going nuts over what this sweet teacher did for his anxious students.

Brian Johnston is an English teacher at Clear Springs High School in League City, Texas. As his students prepared to take a grueling 3-hour Advanced Placement (AP) exam, he decided to help them out by making them snacks.

“Students are usually absolutely exhausted for the rest of the day after these exams,” Johnston told TODAY. “They have to go in with something in their oven.”

So with a jar of JIF in hand, along with a few loaves of whole grain bread, Johnston set up shop in the school’s hallway and offered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to any of the students who wanted one.

He says that he went with the classic lunchtime sandwich because the ingredients were affordable and he knew that he could quickly make them on the spot.

It’s a good thing that he did, too, because Johnston estimates that he ended up making fifty sandwiches in total.

Mayor Has Invited More Than 100 Strangers to His House So He Can Cook Them Dinner

This story was adapted from a nomination to the Reader’s Digest “Top 10 Nicest Places in America” contest: a crowd-sourced effort to uncover corners of the country where people are still kind and respectful in an era of cultural and political divides. If you know of a community, business, or nonprofit where kindness prevails, then be sure to submit a testimony or anecdote here before the June 5th deadline. (GNN will be one of the judges!)

St. Cloud is only the 8th biggest town in Minnesota, but it might be one of the kindest places in America – and the city’s inspiring spirit of compassion is best exemplified by its mayor.

St. Cloud has become more diverse with newly arrived immigrant families moving into our community – which is why in 2015, Mayor Dave Kleis created Dinner with the Mayor to create a safer, more engaged community.

Every month, Kleis invites 7 unknown residents to his house for some open conversation and a home-cooked bowl of chili. People enjoy a simple meal, share their personal stories, learn about other people’s lives, and discuss issues of interest.

RELATEDMom is Moved to Tears When Older Boys Approach Her Adopted Son at the Park

To date, over 120 people have shared a meal with the mayor. As a result, employment opportunities have been created, lasting relationships have been established that transcend race and class; and many of these individuals now serve on the City’s boards and commissions.

“If you’re only hearing from people willing to speak at a public meeting, you’re missing things,” Kleis told The Star Tribune. “Government should be open and transparent and that means accessibility. … If you do that on a regular basis, you create that trust. Nothing can fester.”

The mayor not have any kids or spouses, but his fellow council members jokingly say that he is “married to the city” and he is constantly “leading by example” in creating a friendlier community.

MOREWhen Dog is Found 2,000 Miles Away From Home, 20 Different Strangers Bring Him Back

Another example of the infectious kindness displayed by the city is the Neighbor of the Month program that the city created in 2015 to recognize people doing good deeds. Nominees can be an individual, homeowner, renter, family, business, or organization that is recognized by their peers as being a great neighbor or community builder.

Even the local kids – such as Sophina the “Cookie Girl” – are especially kind.

Sophia is an amazing eight-year-old with Down’s syndrome. For years, she has been friends with area police officers and firefighters, delivering homemade chocolate chip cookies. She has become so loved by police officers that they pooled their money to buy a little electric squad car for her. Sophina’s love affair with the people who keep us safe everyday continues to grow so she delivers more and more cookies.

Café Chain Celebrates Its Buyout By Giving Massive Cash Bonus to Every Single Employee

While other corporations might choose to spend their money in different ways, this food company is using their sudden influx of cash to thank every single one of their employees for all of their hard work.

Café chain Pret A Manger was recently bought out by investment fund JAB Holdings for $2 billion. As a means of celebrating the economic windfall, Pret’s chief executive Clive Schlee announced on Twitter that the company would be giving a $1,300 bonus to each of their 12,000 employees on payroll.

“Today is a big day for Pret,” wrote Schlee. “As we welcome JAB, we’ll be thanking the people who really matter by giving each of our 12,000 employees £1,000 when the deal completes.”

Though the restaurant is primarily based out of the UK, the collective $12 million payout will apply to the employees in all 530 of their stores around the world. Schlee later wrote on Twitter that the buyout is “serendipity for those who have just joined.”

RELATED$70K Minimum Wage is Paying Off for CEO Who Took Pay Cut to Lift Workers

The buyout will be applied to everyone’s paychecks once the deal is signed in the summer. Many of Pret’s workers did not even know about the surprise bonus until they were interviewed by news outlets earlier this week.

According to The Guardian, Pret’s buyout is a part of JAB’s continuous efforts to build a food empire out of snack, coffee, and sandwich brands. In addition to purchasing Panera Bread for $7.5 billion in 2017, JAB also bought out Krispy Kreme Donuts for $1.35 billion the year before.

Pret has been quick to personally reassure concerned Twitter users that their new partnership with JAB will not affect their current standard of values, food, or service.

Cat Has the Most Hilariously Priceless (and Relatable) Reaction to Finding Out She’s Pregnant

For some people, finding out that they’re going to be a parent is the most exciting moment of their lives – for others, maybe not so much.

Ulla the 1-year-old cat, for instance, did not seem so jazzed. In fact, she seemed downright mortified.

Ulla’s animal caretakers at the Dyrenes Venner animal shelter in Nuuk, Greenland could not contain their amusement when they saw the young feline’s reaction to the pregnancy earlier this month.

The staff had taken her in for an ultrasound because they thought she was getting a little chubby. When they scanned her tummy, however, they did not find anything wrong, per se – just four to five unborn kittens.

RELATEDHow to Fix Group Photos With Ex-Boyfriends – Replace Him With the Family Cat

Ulla glanced at the screen only to turn and look at shelter board member Tone Frank with a look that very clearly said: “Are you kitten me?!”

Frank later posted photos of the young feline’s hilarious (and relatable) reaction to the announcement on Reddit earlier this month. The caption simply read: “When you find out you’re pregnant…”

Frank told TODAY that readers should not be too concerned about Ulla’s predicament, as she has already been adopted into a loving home and the kittens will be up for adoption once they are old enough to be welcomed into loving homes.

And as a means of preventing any unplanned pregnancies, Ulla and her kittens will be spayed.

So if you are looking for the purrrrfect new animal companion for your home in Greenland, Ulla’s kitties will be looking for families very soon.

University Becomes First to Offer Free Tuition to Children and Spouses of Fallen Service Members

In a symbolic way of acknowledging Memorial Day, the University of Memphis announced this week that they would soon be offering free tuition to the children and spouses of fallen service members.

The university will be waiving the tuition for any Tennessee residents 24 years or younger who qualify for the Folds of Honor scholarship.

The Folds of Honor scholarship currently contributes $5,000 towards the education of their recipients. Folds of Honor organizers say that they have been looking for universities to accept the scholarship as payment-in-full for some time, and while some schools have expressed interest, none have actually followed through – except for the University of Memphis.

This makes the Tennessee school the first in the country to accept the scholarship as full tuition for its students.

RELATEDYale is Letting Anyone Take Its Most Popular Class Ever for Free

Though the details have not yet been signed, the initiative will go into full effect in the fall.

“This sacrifice is remarkable and we need to recognize that,” University President David Rudd reportedly told the board. “Our commitment is to cover any gap that exists as a result and to relieve them of that burden.”

The scholarship will cover the school’s average yearly tuition of $9,700. If students qualify for additional scholarships, then the school will help to cover the expenses of textbooks, room and board.

Team Gives Bullied Special Needs Man the Best Day Ever After He Was Robbed of His Beloved Hat

Michael Cadena made headlines last month when he was bullied for his rare genetic condition – but the incident actually resulted in one of the best days of the young man’s life.

The 27-year-old special needs man was featured in the news when he was shoved around and robbed of his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers baseball cap while he was at a Target store in Riverside, California.

His mother wrote about the emotional ordeal on Facebook and it immediately spurred an outpouring of love and support. Fellow Dodgers fans were sending messages of encouragement and autographed merchandise to Cadena’s house.

As the story spread, it reached the ears of none other than the Los Angeles Dodgers themselves.

The LA baseball team not only gave Cadena free tickets to their game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, he was then invited to throw the ceremonial first pitch of the game.

According to NBC LA, Cadena has never thrown a baseball before in his life because his fingers are fused together, which makes it difficult to grip the ball.

His hands are just one aspect of his Apert syndrome, a genetic disorder that prevents the skull from developing normally. In order to overcome the challenge, however, Cadena has spent every day of the last few weeks practicing with his father for the first pitch.

After Happy Dad Holds Door Open for Stranger, She Slips His Son a Graduation Gift in Return

Every parent is excited to see their children graduate – but Rob Edwards was doing everything he could to savor the joy of his son’s academic achievement. His happiness was so contagious, in fact, it compelled a stranger to give his son a gift.

Edwards, who is from Tampa, Florida, says that he was about to walk into his local bank when he ran into the appreciative stranger.

“Today I was walking into the bank [when] I held the door open for this lady behind me,” Edwards wrote on Facebook. “Once in the door, she waited for me to go in front of her. I said ‘By all means go in front of me. Today my son graduates. I’m slowing down and want to savor every minute.’

“We carried on additional small talk about being lucky to have made it before the bank closed – and the joys, fun and hard times of having an 18-year-old. I then stepped up to the teller and proceeded with my transaction.”

As he was talking with the banker, however, the woman slipped an envelope onto the counter from under his arm and said, “Congratulations, I’m so happy for you.”

Confused by the gesture, Edwards thanked the woman and finished up his transaction. He then looked inside the envelope and found that it contained a crisp $50 bill.

“Floored” by the gesture, the dad ran outside and saw the woman getting into her vehicle.

“I walked up to her car and told her ‘I can’t take this!’ She said ‘When you talk about your boy, YOU GLOW. You’re a blessing to him, so I want to bless him too!’” Edwards recounts.

“I was so touched,” he added. “I don’t know her name, I’ve never seen her before. But I will never forget her love.

Before they parted ways, Edwards gave the woman a hug and asked to take a photo with her. He later posted the photo to social media so he could praise the woman for her compassion.

“We need more of this in the world today,” says Edwards. “Not the money, but kindness. I hugged a complete stranger today. My son who I love with all my heart was shown love … It warms the father’s heart to love the son. I am blessed.”

Free Services Transformed This Library into a Hub For Healing Life’s Major Problems

This story was submitted as a nomination to the Reader’s Digest “Top 10 Nicest Places in America” contest: a crowd-sourced effort to uncover corners of the country where people are still kind and respectful in an era of cultural and political divides. The Enoch Pratt Free Library is a haven in the city of Baltimore, Maryland.

With 22 locations across the city, the library provides vital services, information, and opportunities to all. Where else can a homeless person, a mother with a child, a business executive, or the mayor walk in and all be treated equally?

The Pratt is a place where civil discourse happens. Librarians are trusted by the community and turned to for help. The Pratt helps people be their best selves.

Stories About Enoch Pratt Free Library

If you go around Baltimore, nearly everyone has a Pratt story. This year, “Social Worker in the Library” was launched to help connect people to the social services they need without ever having to leave the library.

WATCHVeteran Bursts into Tears When Dentist Sees His Teeth and Gives $15K of Work For Free

One of the social workers was able to help a gentlemen begin to learn how to read. He stood up during a group session and told everyone for the first time that he was able to pay a bill on time because he could read what the bill said. He then proceeded to read aloud from a children’s story book. There was not a dry eye in the house.

Another program that’s expanding at the Pratt is “Lawyer in the Library.” Attorneys provide free legal aid to community members for things like expungements. One woman came in with her young daughter and was shocked to realize in a short time she could have her record expunged, which would open up employment opportunities she’d never had before. She looked at her daughter and said: “Today you have a new mommy.”

These stories happen every day inside the Pratt Library.

Testimonials

“Enoch Pratt Library is an anchor institution that is a community treasure in a profound way. This community treasure and its 22 branches circle and embrace the city as a mother embraces her young. The library provides the opportunity to learn about interest and a safe space to explore and exhale. It is also a hub for community members and service providers who want to assist their village in moving forward. The collaboration between Enoch Pratt Library and the University of Maryland School of Social Work is innovative and impactful. It is what a good neighbor does when the community members are in need.

LOOKMontreal Restaurant Offers Free Food to Anyone Who Needs It

“As the Faculty Clinical Instructor for this collaboration, I oversee 8 graduate students who provide direct services to patrons in 4 branches across the city. The patrons do not need an appointment and receive the services on site at the library. Completion of forms, assistance with workforce development or homeless services are a few of the services rendered. Over 500 individuals have reached out in some form to access these services. While there are many libraries that are starting to bring on social workers, Pratt is the only library providing direct services in multiple branches. This community gem is interested in being a ‘good neighbor’ and has extended these services free of charge. Immediate plans for expansion are in progress. Enoch Pratt is a true Baltimore treasure and an awesome neighbor indeed.” — Kimberly Street, Clinical Field Instructor, University of Maryland, School of Social Work

“Enoch Pratt Free Library has been my refuge and escape ever since I came to the U.S. at age 17. I had no friends and had not established ties to a new neighborhood. However, after school, I would go there and just find a sense of peace, purpose and quietness… Developing a love for books inspired me to write and so when I authored my first book, you selected me to come to the Central Library for a Writers Live lecture and book signing… The opportunity [that was granted to] me will be forever cherished… There’s nothing quite like Enoch Pratt.” —Devon Blackwood, Author

“There were two churches in my youth — Dickey Memorial Presbyterian and the Enoch Pratt’s Central Library. The difference is that I still go to the Central Library. I don’t know who I would be without the Pratt, and I don’t want to know.” —Laura Lippman, Author

Mom Develops New App That Alerts Deaf Parents to When and Why Their Babies Are Crying

There are certain leisures that parents might take for granted when raising children – and while listening to babies crying doesn’t seem like it would be very high on the list, it is for deaf parents.

As parents spend time around infants, they start to learn the difference between when a baby is crying from pain, rather than fussiness. Deaf parents, on the other hand, have no way of understanding whether their baby’s cries mean something more serious.

That’s why Dr. Ariana Anderson at the UCLA Medical Center and Semel Institute developed the Chatterbaby app.

Anderson, who is a mother of four, realized that over the course of being a mother, she had steadily learned to interpret her children’s crying. So as a means of assisting the deaf community, she developed the Chatterbaby app to alert parents to when their kids are crying – and to explain why the infants are crying.

RELATEDHow a Tinder Hack Led to Thousands of Women Becoming Best Friends Around the World

By compiling a database of over 2,000 baby cries, Anderon’s app can interpret a baby’s needs with 90% accuracy. For instance, if there are long periods of silence between cries, it usually means that the baby is just finicky. But if the infant is uttering long, sustained, high-pitched wails, it means that the baby is in pain.

The app is still being developed, but deaf parents who have tested the innovative service say that it is already a valuable tool for looking after their infant.

Hard Work Pays Off For Determined Teen Who Took the Bus to Graduation Wearing Cap and Gown

Thousands of high school grads across the country are walking across the stage to receive some well-deserved recognition for their last four years of hard work – and Corey Patrick is no exception.

For the entirety of his senior year, Corey has been waking up at 4AM every morning to take the bus to Tarrant High School. The student had gone to Tarrant city schools for most of his life until he recently moved from Birmingham, Alabama to West End, and even though it was a long commute, he said he wanted to go back to Tarrant for his final year of high school so he could graduate with his friends.

People have been praising Corey’s hard work after a bus driver snapped a photo of him walking away from the bus while he was all dressed up in his cap and gown for graduation.

Additionally, Corey had ridden the bus by himself because his family had been unable to find transportation until the very last minute.

FDA Approves First Ever Drug Designed Exclusively to Prevent Migraines

A revolutionary new drug will soon be able to treat the 2.8 million Americans who suffer from debilitating migraines.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has just approved a treatment called Aimovig, which is the first ever drug that is designed specifically to treat migraines.

Aimovig is applied through a monthly injection that works similarly to insulin shots. The medication then blocks a protein fragment called CGRP, which stimulates migraines.

Up until now, migraine patients have tried to treat and prevent the debilitating episodes by taking medication that is designed to treat other conditions, such as high blood pressure. According to the New York Times, however, these medications work very inconsistently. In addition to only offering partial relief and prevention, they often come with almost unbearable side effects.

RELATEDIn Latest Breakthrough, Scientists Successfully Regrow Brain Tissue That Was Damaged by a Stroke

In clinical trials with Aimovig, on the other hand, the patients experienced no more side effects than the patients in the placebo group.

Though the retail price of the drug is listed at roughly $575 per monthly injection, insurance coverage can bring the copay down to as low as $5 per month, according to a statement from Amgen, the pharmaceutical company responsible for Aimovig.

One week after its approval from the FDA, it is now ready for patient prescription.

“For now, they look fantastic,” said Dr. Stewart J. Tepper of the new drugs. “They shake the ground under our feet. They will change the way we treat migraine.”

“The drugs will have a huge impact,” said Dr. Amaal Starling, a neurologist from the Mayo Clinic who specializes in migraine treatment. “This is really an amazing time for my patient population and for general neurologists treating patients with migraine.”
