Nation Finally Outlaws Ownership of Exotic Pets

man-and-pet-cheetah-bardhi-biloshmi-gallery-facebook

The United Arab Emirates has finally banned its citizens from keeping exotic animals as pets—and instituted punishments ranging from $136,000 in fines to extensive jail time.

The UAE has long been a hub of wildlife trade, and owning animals like lions, tigers, or cheetahs has been viewed as a sign of status or privilege.

The Law on Regulation of Ownership of Dangerous Animals now states that “only zoos, wildlife parks, circuses, breeding and research centers are entitled to keep wild or exotic animals”, which – though such institutions have exhibited problematic treatment of animals – is still considered a huge victory for animal advocates. The legislation will ensure swift judicial action for any kind of civilian caught trading or harboring illegal species.

RELATEDNew Jersey to Become First State That Bans Declawing

Should an animal be used to attack, terrorize, or kill another person, the owner responsible will face anywhere from 3 years to a lifetime in prison. Simply taking a volatile animal out in public will result in a fine upwards of $2,500.

Animal rights officials have encouraged the federal government in the US. to follow suit since it is still legal to own a tiger in eight different states: North Carolina, Alabama, Delaware, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Cancer Death Rate Has Dropped 25% Since 1991 Peak

bald-woman-cc-kevin_morris

A steady decline over more than two decades has resulted in a 25% drop in the overall cancer death rate in the United States. The drop equates to 2.1 million fewer cancer deaths between 1991 and 2014.

The news comes from Cancer Statistics 2017, the American Cancer Society’s comprehensive annual report on cancer incidence, mortality, and survival. The report shows that the cancer death rate dropped from its peak of 215.1 (per 100,000 population) in 1991 to 161.2 (per 100,000 population) in 2014, the latest year for which data was available to analyze.

The drop is the result of steady reductions in smoking and advances in early detection and treatment, and is driven by decreasing death rates for the four major cancer sites: lung (- 43% between 1990 and 2014 among males and -17% between 2002 and 2014 among females), breast (-38% from 1989 to 2014), prostate (-51% from 1993 to 2014), and colorectal (-51% from 1976 to 2014).

RELATEDBold Trials to Kill Vicious Cancer Type is So Successful, FDA Will Fast Track to Patients

The report also finds significant gender disparities in incidence and mortality. For all sites combined, the cancer incidence rate is 20% higher in men than in women, while the cancer death rate is 40% higher in men.

The gender gap in cancer mortality largely reflects variation in the distribution of cancers that occur in men and women, much of which is due to differences in the prevalence of cancer risk factors. For example, liver cancer, a highly fatal cancer, is three times more common in men than in women, partly reflecting higher Hepatitis C virus infection, historical smoking prevalence, and excess alcohol consumption in men. The largest sex disparities are for cancers of the esophagus, larynx, and bladder, for which incidence and death rates are about 4-fold higher in men. Melanoma incidence rates are about 60% higher in men than in women, while melanoma death rates are more than double in men compared to women.

RELATEDFDA Finally Bans Antibacterial Soaps Containing Triclosan and 18 Other Chemicals

Racial disparities in cancer death rates continue to decline. The excess risk of cancer death in black men has dropped from 47% in 1990 to 21% in 2014. The black/white disparity declined similarly in women, from a peak of 20% in 1998 to 13% in 2014. Although the cancer death rate remained 15% higher in blacks than in whites in 2014, increasing access to care as a result of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act may expedite the narrowing racial gap. From 2010 to 2015, the proportion of blacks who were uninsured dropped in half, from 21% to 11%, as it did for Hispanics (31% to 16%). Gains in coverage for traditionally underserved Americans will facilitate the broader application of existing cancer control knowledge across every segment of the population.

“The continuing drops in the cancer death rate are a powerful sign of the potential we have to reduce cancer’s deadly toll,” said Otis W. Brawley, M.D., FACP, chief medical officer of the ACS. “Continuing that success will require more clinical and basic research to improve early detection and treatment, as well as creative new strategies to increase healthy behaviors nationwide. Finally, we need to consistently apply existing knowledge in cancer control across all segments of the population, particularly to disadvantaged groups.”

UPS Deliveries May Now Arrive Via Electrically-Powered Bikes

ups-bikes-ups

Meet the Cargo Cruiser: an environmentally-friendly, electrically-powered package delivery bike currently in its testing stages of development.

The United Parcel Service has been working for the last 10 years to slash their carbon footprint by creating the Rolling Laboratory – a project that has deployed over 700 different vehicles using alternative fueling methods that don’t harm the environment. Among one of the test vehicles is the Cargo Cruiser.

Bicycle delivery was first tested by the company in Europe in 2012, but this is the first time the eBike project has been brought to America.

RELATEDCyclists Volunteer to Give Nature Rides to Wheelchair Bound

Throughout the trial period, UPS will be monitoring the bikes’ efficiency in Portland, Oregon, fondly called “Bike City USA”.

The vehicles can be powered by foot or motor, saving an estimated two or more gallons of gasoline a day. UPS also hopes that the Cargo Cruisers will save money and fuel by avoiding the harsh effects of traffic and gridlock. Weather is expected to be an issue affecting bike lane transportation, however results remain to be seen.

UPS has already made great strides in reducing their environmental impact. In August, the company announced the achievement of their goal to drive 1 billion miles in its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet one year earlier than planned.

“We had a big sustainability goal as we set out to make the most of our rolling laboratory by driving 1 billion clean miles in alternative fuel vehicles – that’s the equivalent of well over 4,000 trips to the moon,” said David Abney, Chairman and CEO, UPS. “With more than 100,000 drivers logging more than 3 billion miles per year, our future depends on our ability to meet the growing demand for global trade while reducing our impact on the environment.”

Singer Donates Kidney to Venue Owner Who Gave His Band a Chance

brandon-robbins-and-corey-fox-matt-eastin

Corey Fox has had a hand in the flourishing of several popular indie bands – and now he’s been thanked with a much-needed kidney.

Fox, owner of the Velour Live Music Club in Provo, Utah, helped groups like Neon Trees and Imagine Dragons get their start in the industry. Fox has also suffered from chronic kidney disease since he was 15. Nine months ago, he published a statement about his condition and a plea for a kidney donor.

In gratitude for his service, an organ was offered to him by none other than Brandon Robbins – the lead singer and guitarist of The Moth & The Flame, an indie rock group that Fox mentored in its infancy.

RELATEDHooters Waitress Gives Kidney to Customer She Barely Knew

“Corey has created a music scene in a town most people have never heard of. He developed a kinship between all the bands,” wrote the band’s keyboardist Mark Garbett. “He is the friend and mentor to all of us. Corey and Brandon were especially close. They hung out together all the time and became two of each other’s closest friends.”

The singer went in for testing and discovered he was a perfect match for the donation. On December 20th, the two underwent a successful surgery and together prepared for the months of recovery ahead.

“Brandon was honestly more excited about doing this than he was to play with Weezer,” he added. “I am proud to know both of these guys. And I think Brandon just earned himself a year of no loading in or out.”

Obama Administration Saves Sea Life by Denying Requests for Atlantic Oil Exploration

happy-dolphin-cc-road-fun

The Obama administration today denied six permit applications for oil and gas exploration off the Atlantic Coast — from Florida to Delaware — including requests to search for fossil fuels using noisy airguns that hurt whales, dolphins and other animals.

“Without a doubt, this decision will save whales, dolphins and other animals from suffering painful hearing loss and other damage inflicted by these terrible blasts of noise,” said Miyoko Sakashita, oceans director at the Center for Biological Diversity. “And it’s yet another important signal to the oil industry that the Atlantic is closed for business.”

The decision, announced by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, cited the fact the Atlantic is now off limits to new oil leasing until at least 2022 as one of the reasons it denied the permits.

RELATEDNations Unite to Create World’s Largest Marine Reserve in Antarctica

Seismic exploration surveys use high-powered airguns to search for oil and generate the loudest human sounds in the ocean, short of explosives. The blasts, which can reach more than 250 decibels, can cause hearing loss in marine mammals, disturb essential behaviors such as feeding and breeding over vast distances, mask communications between individual whales and dolphins, and reduce catch rates of commercial fish.

Today’s decision follows release of the 2017-2022 national offshore oil and gas leasing plan, which removed federal waters in the mid- and south Atlantic from availability for leasing until at least 2022. President Obama also recently permanently withdrew 31 canyons in the Atlantic from future oil and gas leasing.

“This closes the door on the oil industry’s attempts to pollute the Atlantic Coast and damage our ocean and climate. The Atlantic should be permanently off limits to oil drilling and exploration to safeguard wildlife and the eastern seaboard from damage and oil spills,” said Sakashita.

This Device Can Save Thousands of People From Bleeding Out

xstat-injector-revmedx

This simple syringe-like device in the final stages of approval from the FDA has the ability to save hundreds of victims of gun violence.

Known as the XSTAT, the syringe-like applicator injects a group of small, rapidly-expanding sponges into a wound cavity. In the wound, the XSTAT sponges expand and swell to fill the wound cavity within 20 seconds of contact with blood. This creates a temporary barrier to blood flow and provides hemostatic pressure.

The injection can soak up to one pint of blood over the course of four hours, which is expected to be a sufficient amount of time before the afflicted can be properly treated. Once the wound is attended to by medical professionals, each sponge can be properly found and removed in surgery thanks to tiny X-ray detectable markers inside the material.

RELATEDSimple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

The XSTAT can be used on the battlefield by the military; during childbirth in less-developed countries; or by paramedics treating civilians on the way to a hospital.

Currently, the devices are being sold by RevMedX for about $100 a pop, however the price is expected to go down as demand increases.

“When a product is developed for use in the battlefield, it is generally intended to work in a worst-case scenario where advanced care might not be immediately available,” said William Maisel, acting director of the Office of Device Evaluation in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “It is exciting to see this technology transition to help civilian first responders control some severe, life-threatening bleeding while on the trauma scene.”

Soon You Can Cross Canada on One of the Longest Pleasure Trails in the World

canadian-bicyclist-great-trail-instagram

One of the world’s longest recreational trails in the world will soon be open to the public in the fall of 2017.

The Great Trail connecting all of the Canadian countryside has been in the making for the last 25 years. It travels roughly 15,000 miles from coast-to-coast through 13 different provinces and territories. The track is also reportedly within half and hour’s distance of 80% of the nation’s population.

Since 1992, the Trans Canada Trail Foundation has worked to build the trail by connecting already existing trails with new portions winding from New Foundland to British Colombia. The nonprofit was reportedly struggling with fundraising, but they were able to successfully collect $75 million for the trail’s completion by Canada’s 150th birthday.

RELATEDU.S. Citizens Are Protecting Twice as Much Land as the National Parks

With the track winding through some of Canada’s most diverse wilderness areas, visitors will have fairly easy access to snowmobiling, skiing, hiking, paddling, or biking.

Valerie Pringle, co-Chairman of the Trans Canada Trail Foundation, says that though it was a rough ride creating the trail, it was well worth the work.

“I’m now 63, and this is something I left behind of value,” Valeria told Upworthy. “It’s the ultimate gift to Canadians from Canadians.”

With the trail scheduled to be finished in autumn, Canadians will still have a few more months to visit some of the country’s national parks for free in honor of the nation’s birthday.

Father Fired for Attending Son’s Birth is Flooded With Support, Job Offers

lamar-and-lindsay-austin-gofundme

When Lamar Austin was forced to choose between a weekend of work at his new job or the birth of his son Cainan, he made the obvious decision – but his employer didn’t see it that way.

Lamar was working a part-time 90-day trial period as a security guard at Salerno Protective Services when his wife went into labor last Friday night. Though he sent a text to his boss explaining the situation, he received a response reading: “You’re forcing my hand, if you aren’t in work by 8 tomorrow we are going to terminate you.”

At 1AM on New Year’s Day, after their son became the first baby of 2017 born in New Hampshire, he received another text saying that he was “terminated”.

RELATEDStore Manager Offers Job to Shoplifter Trying to Feed His Children

When Lamar’s story was published in the local newspaper, it was seen by former town board member and paid family leave advocate Sara Persechino, who created a GoFundMe campaign to ease the financial stresses of the family until Lamar found another job.

“No one should have to choose between their family and their job,” says Sara. “Welcoming a new baby to a family should be a joyous time.”

Since its creation two days ago, 100 people have donated over $2,000 to the campaign. More importantly, 3 different local employers contacted Lamar with job offers, as well as an apprenticeship from the local business manager of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and from the labour union, AFL-CIO.

Although the company has complained of misstatements in the media, and there are “two sides to every story,” they declined to comment and have given no details about their side of the story.

Tightrope Walker Scales Ski Wire to Rescue Dangling Man

ski-rescue-mickey-wilson-instagram

What could have been a horrifying ski accident turned into a larger than life rescue thanks to a tightrope artist jumping into action.

An unidentified skier was riding a lift chair up a mountain at Arapahoe Basin in Colorado when he attempted to disembark the unit and got his backpack stuck on the rigging. Instead of skiing away from the lift, he went around the bullwheel and was sent back down the mountain. But after the lift operator turned off the machine, disaster struck.

Due to his struggling, the backpack straps slipped up to the man’s neck, cutting off his air supply until he fell unconscious.

Luckily, 28-year-old Mickey Wilson, a part-time ski instructor and professional slackliner, was riding in the chair behind him.

Mickey and the other nearby skiers attempted to make a human tower to reach the man, whom he described as a “friend of a friend”. When they kept toppling off of each other, however, Mickey had “a eureka moment”.

“I realized I could climb the lift tower above the chair and climb onto the cable and shimmy down to him,” says Mickey. “I knew my slackline experience prepared me perfectly for this so I burst into action. I climbed the tower and slid down to the the chair.”

“It was second nature, just like being on a slackline only way colder and made of steel,” he added.

Wilson attempted to dislodge the backpack’s strap by kicking it, but he was unsuccessful. The ski patrol then tossed him a knife from the ground, which he used to cut the strap loose, sending the man towards the ground.

Ski patrol performed CPR until the man started breathing again, and then transported him to the hospital. Despite reportedly having to wear a neck brace, the man is being released from the hospital today in good health.

“I’d like to take this moment now to thank the slack life for the skills it has given me. It was incredibly fortunate I was there and able to act quickly. I’d also like to thank ski patrol for their strong work reviving our friend,” says Mickey.

Man Turns Plastic Waste into a Way to Save Trees

plastic bottle trash litter-CC-Snemann

This Kenyan man was tired of seeing trash continuously piling up on the beaches of his city – so he came up with an ingenious way to recycle plastic waste and save trees at the same time.

Aghan Oscar is the founder of Continental Renewable Energy (COREC), a small recycling company based in Nairobi that collects garbage and turns it into road signage and poles.

Timber used for fences and signage is often vandalized in the lower-income neighborhoods and used for firewood. It also deteriorates faster and contributes to receding forest land. Aghan’s recipe for polythene products, made out of of post-consumer materials and sand, are not only far more durable – they’re much cheaper.

WATCHThis Machine Relocates Trees So You Don’t Have to Cut Them Down

The Kenya National Highways Authority has reportedly bought over 28,000 poles from Aghan’s company, saving the government millions. Vandals are notorious for stealing metal structures and selling them to steel manufacturing companies, but COREC’s plastic products can’t effectively be resold.

As the company grows, so do their need for able-bodied hands. COREC currently employs over 250 local Kenyan youth to gather plastic waste and work the assembly line. Aghan is a firm believer that supporting recycling companies can provide more young people with jobs, as well as save the planet.

“One kilogram of plastic waste saves 2.5kg of carbon emissions, and for every 10 plastic posts produced, one tree is saved. Recycling is definitely the best bet in conserving the environment,” Aghan told the Christian Science Monitor.

These six upperclassmen took a morning off of their holiday vacation to serve as pallbearers for a man they had never met.

Jerry Wayne Pino was a Vietnam veteran who had died on December 12th at age 70 and had already made arrangements to be buried in Biloxi National Cemetery. The Baton Rouge man, however, died without any family to attend his funeral.

Two of the workers at Riemann Family Funeral Homes, Cathy Warden and Eva Boomer, got the idea to ask Warden’s son Bryce and his friends to be the pallbearers.

Bryce was reportedly going to be out of town for the Tuesday morning service, but a few texts later, and six students from Long Beach High School rose to the occasion.

“Bryce sent the text and asked them to wear khaki pants, shirts and ties. ‘Let’s do this!’ he told his classmates. Almost immediately, they said yes,” Warden told the Sun Herald.

JT Tripp, Bailey Griffin, Joseph Ebberman, Jake Strong, Kenny McNutt and James Kneiss attended the funeral with Navy honor guards present. After being given the American flag that had been folded over his casket, the teens declared that they would hang it in their high school locker room in Pino’s honor.

Karma Rewards Couple in Trouble Who Helped Others in Need

lucinda-borges-and-paulo-pereira-youtube

Portuguese couple Lucinda Borges and Paulo Pereira gained region-wide popularity because of their generosity in the city of Avanca. The duo were once hailed for passing out over 1,000 liters of water to drivers stuck in traffic on a dangerously hot day in August.

But as of late, the couple has fallen on hard times. Last month, Lucinda was diagnosed with a heart problem, making the couple’s finances severely compromised. Their luck began to change, however when Portuguese newspaper JN broadcasted their situation. People started contacting Lucinda and Paulo wanting to donate food, money, medical appointments – even job offers.

Lucinda, 34-years-old, her husband, Paulo, 44, and their teenage daughter were reportedly a mix of laughter and tears upon talking about the news.

“People are offering us all sorts of things and words of comfort, it’s been amazing! I think I got healthier with so many manifestations of love,” Lucinda, who is still looking for a more definitive diagnostic on her heart issue, told JN.

Many donors even traveled to their region so they could personally handle the donations. Hundreds also called the family with other promises of compassion and kindness.

“It’s good to look at the kitchen and see so much food and be able to provide for our daughter” says Lucinda, after admitting that she let her daughter spend Christmas at a friend’s house because there wasn’t enough food in the house.

“A few fellow Portuguese citizens from Camboja called to offer jobs for both of us. We’re studying the possibilities, but words can’t express how thankful we are,” says Paulo. But for now he admits the priority is his wife’s health.

This Canadian restaurant runs on a single stern belief: that no one deserves to be hungry because they don’t have any money.

That’s why they now give free meals to anyone who needs one.

The Marché Ferdous, a small Mediterranean restaurant in Montreal, put up a sign in their window reading: “People with no money welcome to eat free”.

For elderly or disabled people confined to wheelchairs, it may be impossible to enjoy the health benefits that come with bicycling.

But now with the Healing Rides program, they’re given the same joy of biking as anyone else.

The program pairs volunteer pedalers with guests with limited mobility for nature rides through Constitution Trail, a 36.4-mile rail-trail in Illinois. The bicyclists use special wheelchair-bikes called Duet Bike Chairs that allow the passenger to ride in the front of the contraption, rather than being pulled along behind.

Governor Proposes Groundbreaking Free Tuition for Middle Class

new-york-governor-cuomo-youtube

Earlier this week, New York Governor Cuomo announced a groundbreaking new proposal that will provide free college tuition to any families or students in the state making less than $125,000 per year.

Though it still needs support from state lawmakers, the plan would include state universities, community colleges, and two-year programs. Once it is approved, the program will take effect incrementally over the next three years.

Tennessee and Oregon have already made community college free to state students, but Cuomo’s university-inclusive plan would give New York the most progressive educational advancements in the country.

RELATEDAmerican Teen Graduation Rate Reaches Historic High

The state would provide funding for the tuition by boosting state and federal grant programs that already exist in New York. Current financial estimates for the program are ranging around $163 million, however that figure could vary depending on participation.

“College is a mandatory step if you really want to be a success,” Cuomo said Tuesday, as The Washington Post reported. “And the way this society said we’re going to pay for high school because you need high school, this society should say we’re going to pay for college because you need college to be successful. And New York state is going to do something about it.”

When Hannah Simpson was 11-years-old, all she wanted was a horse of her own to ride and train. Her parents, however, insisted that ponies were too expensive, leaving Hannah’s dream unfulfilled.

Her creative solution? She trained one of the cows on their dairy farm to ride instead.

For the last seven years, Hannah has ridden her heifer Lilac through the meadows of the South Island town of Invercargill, in New Zealand. Lilac has the capacity to jump up to 4.5 feet, but she prefers lazier activities like long bush walks and leisurely swims.

Hannah first climbed onto Lilac’s back on a dare from her brother, although the rider advises against most people attempting to mount a cow – Lilac has apparently bucked her off many times. But because of the duo’s rare bond, the two have defied the rules and become an unusual team.

Hannah now has a horse named Sammy, but she still takes her original steed out to pasture once a week for a ride.
