Photo Bomb! Satellite Catches Moon Crossing Earth’s Face (WATCH)

The moon appears to “photobomb” this stunning view of Earth in a time lapse video released by NASA.

For only the second time since it was launched, the DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) satellite has captured the moon passing between the space probe’s orbit and our planet

”The project recorded this event on July 5 with the same cadence and spatial resolution as the first ‘lunar photobomb’ last year,” said the project scientist Adam Szabo, comparing the one almost exactly a year ago.

Its orbit is constantly changing, and it is rare for the satellite and moon to match paths in a way that lets the spacecraft photograph both the Earth and moon at the same time.

DSCOVR is located almost a million miles from Earth, nearly four times as far away as the moon. Operated in conjunction with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it has been snapping a series of photos every day since its launch 19 months ago as part of its mission to monitor atmosphere, climate, and vegetation on the planet.

Animal Shelter Enlists Help of Pokemon GO Players to Walk Dogs

pokemon dog walkers Released Muncie Animal Shelter

An Indiana animal shelter has created a way to make Pokemon GO even more successful — giving dogs a long walk while players hunt for creatures.

Muncie Animal Shelter Director Phil Peckinpaugh hatched the idea of enlisting players as dog walkers after seeing a group of people playing the augmented reality game, which requires walking in order to birth a new Pokemon.

He put together a digital flyer featuring Pokemon characters Cubone and Growlithe and the response was immediate — dozens of volunteers showed up on the first day to walk dogs while playing the new game on their phones. It’s been shared more than 25,000 times since Tuesday morning.

The Pokemon GO app, designed to get people off their couch, takes players outside to hunt, train, and battle Pokemon. Peckinpaugh, who plays the game himself, realized it would make a great recruiting tool for volunteer dog walkers — and the shelter has plenty of animals, now called “poke-dogs”, that need fresh air and exercise.

“Kids, they love it,” Peckinpaugh told Buzzfeed. “There are people walking dogs, posting pics on their Instagrams and social media. That exposure for the dogs is really quite epic.”

Cops Pay Restaurant Bill For Couple Who Refused To Sit Next To Them

Cops Buy Dinner for Couple WTAE

When a couple refused to sit near police officers at a restaurant, the cops picked up their tab — and even threw in a 35% tip.

The officers, from Homestead and Whitaker, which is three miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, were having dinner Saturday when the couple was to be seated near them. The man insisted on sitting on the opposite side of the restaurant.

The men in blue said it as obvious the guy wanted nothing to do with them. That’s when the officers decided to do something that would show they were not bad guys, and asked their waiter to bring the couple’s bill.

The plan calls for installing solar panels on nine of its stores around the UK. The chain has 852 stores in the UK and about 200 stores in nine other countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

The project will produce 891 kilowatt-hours of electricity from the solar panels.

The company has created M&S Energy Society and partnered with a nonprofit to raise $1.63 million for the solar project —selling shares ranging in price from $132 to $132,000 and promising a target of five percent interest each year over the 20 year life of the project.

Kids Are Teaching Grownups About Kindness

“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” ~ Lao Tzu

Educators from across the U.S. gathered in Cambridge, Massachusetts for “Making Caring Common: Cultivating Kindness and Preventing Bullying in Schools,” a 2-day program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Drawing on 2014 Harvard research that found that 80 percent of youth say their parents care more about their achievements and happiness than about whether they are being kind, the program’s goal was to share strategies for promoting school cultures of caring and for preventing challenging student behaviors like bullying.

As the parent of three children who hopes they’ll grow up to be kind and giving members of society, the survey results were disturbing, especially having just read Sherry Turkle’s new book Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age, which cited concerns that today’s kids’ pervasive use of smart phones has made them less empathetic and unpracticed in conversation skills necessary for true communication.

MOREPolice Surprised This Humble Boy After Thieves Steal His Xbox

But, there’s also an encouraging and contradictory trend that shows that more and more kids are “giving back” and embracing new technologies to show their charity.

In May 2016, the social fundraising website Booster based in Newton, Massachusetts announced “B-Cause: Kids” – a first-of-its-kind national awareness initiative to inspire more kids to be generous and giving.

“Since kids are our most important asset, Americans need to do whatever we can to ensure their well-being, to help them to become well-rounded citizens, and to teach them to give back,” said Andrew Moss, President of Booster, LLC. “It’s time to spread the word that philanthropy is fun, and that charity is essential for all children.”

RELATEDOrphan Best Friends Unknowingly Adopted By Families in Same Town

Booster’s initiative honors what it calls the “next generation of philanthropists.” In a post on its blog, Booster has showcased a group of 14 American kids (from 7-to-16 years of age) who are making a difference standing up for people and causes they care about.

As their profiles in the blog post illustrate, these kids are running t-shirt fundraising campaigns to raise awareness and money for a range of charities including childhood cancer research, ending homelessness and hunger, rescuing sexually exploited and enslaved children, supporting childhood literacy, protecting endangered African wildlife, and other worthy causes.

WATCHSuspect Weeps When Judge Remembers Him as “Nicest Kid in Middle School” –It Changed His Life

The stories of these kids are inspiring and many grownups would do well to emulate their model of generosity.

In a cynical world filled with bad news about terrorism, floods, fires, murders and worse – it’s reassuring to have some “good news” knowing that tomorrow’s budding philanthropists are already doing good work.

This growing trend gives me optimism for the future and brings to mind the words of Louis Pasteur:

6 Reasons to Be Happy the New Pokemon App is Taking Over the Streets

pokemon-go-nintendo pic

Since the release of Pokémon GO for smartphones Thursday, the augmented reality game, which uses GPS to display characters roaming in your real world, has become a global phenomenon.

When you walk around your streets, the app shows you your surroundings and Pokémon characters are lurking around ready to be caught. Players can also grab useful items for their team at real locations, like a bus stop, park bench, or other landmark.

With millions of adults and kids becoming hardcore fans and hitting the streets to play the game, Nintendo’s stock rose 30 percent. But money and fun are not the only reasons to be grateful for the game. Here are six reasons it’s a good thing this game is taking over the world for a while…

1) You end up getting a LOT of exercise

Nintendo built this game to get people off the couch. For one thing, you have to walk a certain distance to hatch incubated eggs that will turn into Pokémon. If you are in a car, it doesn’t work. The game tracks your movement using GPS, and includes a speed limit that only allows slow biking or walking to hatch your eggs.

One fan tweeted famously that Pokémon GO did more to boost exercise levels in one weekend than Michelle Obama achieved in eight years.

2) You get exposed to historical and artistic landmarks

Besides just walking around looking for Pokémon, gamers can visit PokéStops, locations marked in-game by blue squares which allow you to gather in-game items — such as Eggs, Poké Balls, Potions, and more. PokéStops are usually cultural landmarks of some sort. These can include things like public art, murals and sculptures, unique architecture, and historical landmarks.

pokemon go screenshots

Anath Sheridan wrote on Quora, “I’ve already found several murals and buildings I didn’t know existed.”

3) You run into old friends—and make new ones

Kids who used to play the original Gameboy Pokémon together are bumping into each other as adults, years later, as they gather in parks, near churches and schools hunting around PokéStops. In the app, each player is on a team (red or blue, for instance) and, especially if they’ve chosen the same team, friendships rekindle as they start walking around together. A more common benefit is meeting new friends. It is instantaneous how conversations start—and new relationships might be hatching just like Poké eggs.

4) Local businesses are benefiting from new customers

Thousands of businesses across the country discovered they had become part of Pokémon GO, and some are reaping the benefit. ComicBook.com explains, “Reactions to the sudden uptick in business ranged from bemused to annoyance, but Pokémon GO does represent a unique opportunity for some businesses, especially those that rely on walk up traffic, to make money.”

pokemon go-nintendo screenshotsIf your business is the site of a PokéStop or near to one, you can get the app and activate a Lure that can be seen on the maps of nearby players, alerting them to the increased amount of Pokemon in an area. Some businesses are also offering discounts for players that catch a Pokémon on site, or have a rare Pokémon they can show off. If you don’t want your business to be a part of Pokemon GO, you can submit a request on Niantic Labs site to remove your location from the game.

5) It is already helping people with depression

It makes sense when you think about it. Exercise is one of the best remedies for depression. Downloading the game has given people a new love for life.

TheAwesomeAdventurer wrote on Tumblr, “Rather than laying in bed all day, we are getting up and going outside and actually enjoying ourselves.”

6) You might just save someone’s life

Jeanette Warner, a mom in Buckeye, Arizona, spent much of the weekend playing the new game with her family. When visiting a nearby park she saw a young boy fall over from heat exhaustion after being bullied by two older boys, who were making him do sprints without water. After the bullies left, the boy tried to ride his bike into the desert, but couldn’t muster the strength. Warner called 911 and told KPHO-TV, “He fell face first into the rocks.”

NOTE of CAUTION: There are a couple downsides to this scavenger hunt adventure. Even though the company’s CEO says the game includes only public places considered “safe” for pedestrians, he urges people to play in groups.

There are times, though, when a spot might not be safe even for a group. At least one robbery has been reported in connection with Pokémon GO. Suspects in Missouri were arrested for stealing phones and wallets at one of the PokéStops from a group of teens.

It’s important in this game to be aware of what’s going on around you. When the app is opened, it launches with a warning message for users to keep their wits about them. And, most definitely don’t drive while looking at the screen. Help Your Friends Catch This!

Police, Firefighters Hear Mom’s Plea, Lonely Autistic Boy Gets Best Day Ever

Autistic Boy Police Firefighter Playdate FB Merrimack PD

When friends stood him up for a play date, police and firefighters saved the day for this autistic boy.

Eleven-year-old Austin Mendrala has been having a hard time finding other kids to play with this summer. When his mom would invite others to hang out in the park, no one was showing up. At one point, he cried for an hour over his loneliness, but the future was looking brighter.

His mother, Delilah, explained the situation on social media and put out an open call for kids to meet Austin at the local school playground in Merrimack, New Hampshire.

When they got there, no one was yet waiting, but a city detective had seen the post and rallied his friends at the police department.

Before they left, a fire engine and ambulance pulled up—and firefighters and EMTs joined the play date.

Detective Chris Spillane says when he’d suggested the department help Austin have a good day at the playground, police officers “didn’t even hesitate” and some wanted to call their friends at the fire department.

While the police and firefighters hung out with Austin, more families started showing up — many with autistic kids who’d been facing the same lonely summer as Austin.
