Here’s Why You Should Start Washing Your Clothes in Cold Water

Washing your clothes in cold water may seem counterintuitive to everything you’ve learned in the laundry room, but there are a host of benefits that come from turning down the heat on your washing machine.

Using cold water isn’t just better for your clothes and your wallet – it’s also better for the environment.

90% of the energy used in a typical washing machine goes towards heating the water. The other 10% is simply used to power the motor. According to Business Insider, washing machine manufacturers have spent the last 15 years improving their designs so their products can clean laundry more efficiently while still meeting hot water use standards that have been set by the Department of Energy.

As the manufacturers improved their designs, laundry detergent companies improved their recipes so their products could work more efficiently with cold water.

“Front-loaders and high-efficiency top-loaders run normal cycles 10 percent cooler than agitator washers, and the ‘warm’ wash temperature in the U.S. has declined by 15 degrees over the past 15 years,” Tracey Long, communications manager for Proctor & Gamble’s fabric care products in North America, told the news outlet.

“Traditional detergent enzymes can be sluggish in cold water so we worked to create a mix of surfactants and enzymes that deliver cleaning performance in cold water across all product lines,” she added.

So unless you’re washing fabrics that have been used by sick people, or you’re doing a load of dirty diapers, washing dirty clothes in cold water is just as efficient as using hot. According to Christine Dimmick, the author of “Detox Your Home”, you can add a half-cup of white vinegar to a load of smelly laundry to get the odor out. She also says you can add a little dose of essential oil if you’re adverse to the smell of vinegar.

MOREMan Invents Glow-in-the-Dark Toilet Seat So You Don’t Need to Turn on Lights

Additionally, cold water is better for the longevity of your clothing, as it keeps them from wearing out, shrinking, or bleeding color.

If the average American washed 4 out of 5 of their laundry loads in cold water, they could save up to 864 pounds of emissions from the atmosphere every year, says Cold Water Saves. That’s the equivalent of planting .34 acres of trees in the US.

Plus, using hot water accounts for roughly $265 worth of electricity for the average American annually, in comparison to cold water only costing about $16.

Listen to Pizza Delivery Guy’s Stunning Performance When He Asks Family to Play Their Piano

Bryce Dudal may work as a pizza delivery driver during the day, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have some incredible talents hidden up his sleeve.

The Varchetti family was treated to a stunning pre-dinner performance earlier this week when they ordered pizza from Hungry Howie’s to their sub-suburban Detroit home in Michigan.

The 18-year-old delivery guy handed over the pepperoni pie, noticed the family’s unused grand piano inside their foyer, and asked if he could play something.

Dudal then proceeded to play Beethoven’s third movement of “Moonlight Sonata”.

Astonished by the youngster’s skill, the Varchettis took a video of the performance and posted it to Facebook where it has been viewed thousands of times. The Varchetti’s son even stopped playing video games so he could listen to the song.

The most impressive part? Dudal says that he is mostly self-taught.

He started playing piano on his family’s keyboard when he was 6 years old. He learned to play several simple TV show theme songs and children’s tunes until finally, his mom bought him some Beethoven CDs – one of which was “Moonlight Sonata”. Entranced by the third movement’s intensity, he started learning the piece by ear, with some help from YouTube videos. Within a year, he had it nailed.

RELATEDFoo Fighters See ‘Kiss Guy’ With a Sign in Audience, and Pull Him On Stage—And He Nails it

“It was a long process. You have to sit there and think and try to put it on the piano, piece by piece. I couldn’t read music back then,” he told The Washington Post. “I would sit there and listen for hours and hours and try to figure it out.”

After going through several piano teachers who only wanted to teach him the basics, he finally found a teacher who appreciated his zealous style of learning at 12 years old. He recently took a break from playing piano so he could focus on playing baseball, but his performance for the Varchettis has renewed his love for the instrument – especially after receiving an outpouring of praise from the video’s Facebook comments.

Experimental Alzheimer’s Drug Stirs Hope After Early Trials Reduce Toxic Protein Clusters by 70%

An experimental new drug is inspiring “cautious optimism” in researchers after its late-stage trials showed great success in reducing the progression and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.

The drug is an antibody called BAN2401. An 18-month phase 2 trial involving 856 patients showed that the treatment greatly reduced development of new beta amyloid clusters in the brain, which are the toxic proteins linked to the disease. Additionally, it reduced existing clusters of the protein by an average of 70%.

Patients taking the drug also showed a 26% to 30% improvement in cognition compared to patients taking the placebo drug. Less than 10% of the patients showed any side effects that are related to beta amyloid therapies.

RELATEDWhen Grandma With Alzheimer’s Can’t Do Her Puzzles, Teen Comes Up With Perfect Solution

Hope for the drug’s success had been dashed in December after the trial failed to show any improvement – but researchers say that modifying the drug’s dosage dramatically changed the results.

The companies responsible for the trial, American biotechnology company Biogen and Japanese drugmaker Eisai, have applied for accelerated approval of phase 3 trials. If studies continue to show relative success, the researchers are hopeful for FDA approval.

“These were people with very mild impairments, some confusion, forgetting someone’s name on occasion,” said Dr. Lynn Kramer, the chief clinical and medical officer for Eisai. “That’s the goal: to stop Alzheimer’s disease when it’s in the mildest presentation.”

Widower Takes Photo of Late Wife to the Beach Every Day ‘As a Symbol of a Love That Does Not End’

A 70-year-old widower is setting a new expectation for what it means to be together until “death do us part”.

Every day for the last seven years, Giuseppe Giordano has taken a framed photo of his wife Ida to a beach in Gaeta, Italy so they can look out at the ocean together.

The beach is especially meaningful to Giuseppe because it’s where he and Ida would go when they first started dating as teenagers.

The two of them first met in 1969 when they were just 16 years old. Their parents disapproved of their relationship because Ida got pregnant out of wedlock. After they tied the knot against their parents’ wishes, they went on to have three children. Not only that, they were together for almost fifty years until Ida fell ill and lost a battle to cancer in 2011.

Now, Giuseppe insists on keeping her picture with him at all times so they are never apart.

A local pizzeria owner, 54-year-old Giorgio Moffa, snapped a photo of Giuseppe sitting by the beach with Ida’s picture because he felt moved my the man’s devotion to his late wife. He then approached the widower and started a conversation with him.

“I saw him, and I was sure there was a great love story. Men like him do not exist anymore,” said Moffa, according to The Daily Mail. “I think that everyone in this world has at some point, lost someone special to them.

“So each of us has these moments of grief, it’s just that Giuseppe had the great courage and dignity to show it,” he added.

Upon posting the photo of Giuseppe to social media, the widower has received an outpouring of love, praise, encouragement, and appreciation from people who are touched by his devotion and vulnerability. Moffa says that anyone who would like to chat with his new friend can stop by his pizza parlor, Antica Pizzeria Ciro.

Dolly Parton Quietly Gives Away 100 Millionth Book for Her Child Reading Program

Dolly Parton was honored by The Library of Congress this year to mark a little known milestone in her life— the 100 millionth book that she has quietly donated to children.

The ‘Nation’s Library’ in Washington D.C. highlighted the singer-actress’s nonprofit, “Imagination Library”, which she began more than two decades ago with the goal of giving books to kids around the world.

“Of all the things I’ve done in my life, and it’s been a lot ’cause I’ve been around a long time, this is one of the most precious things and the proudest I am of any program,” Dolly told the gathered audience of wee ones and adults.

She engaged the audience during the celebration by reading—and singing—her children‘s book created from her song, “A Coat of Many Colors,” about a child who treasured a coat that her momma quilted from rags.

Dad Designs a Floating Drone That Could Prevent Dozens of Potential Drownings

One concerned father is hoping that his innovation can help save children all over the world from a very simple danger.

With a plethora of pools being opened up in people’s backyards for the summer, Lee Kambar of Phoenix, Arizona has designed a drone that could act as an extra set of eyes to prevent potential drownings.

The Morningstar SOS is a drone with two built-in, 360-degree cameras that can survey the activity on top and underneath a pool’s surface. If the device senses that someone is in or around the pool when they shouldn’t be, it sends a picture and notification to the homeowners.

If the situation turns out to be an emergency, then homeowners immediately have the option to pass on the information to local rescue workers.

RELATEDEx-NASA Engineer to Plant One Billion Trees a Year Using Drones

When responding to a drowning person, every second counts – which is why emergency crews are already hailing Kambar’s invention as a potential life-saver.

“We’ve been saying for years as a fire department that every second counts in these situations,” Captain Jack Van Hook with the Phoenix Fire Department told KPHO.

Kambar hopes that the drones, which will be on sale via the Morningstar website by the end of the year, will help other concerned fathers keep their children safe during the summers to come.

Now You Can Lull Yourself to Sleep With This Bob Ross Sleep Series!

- credit, Bob Ross Inc. fair use

Many people retain fond memories of their parents reading them bedtime stories—but now, we can be lulled to sleep by one of the most relaxing celebrities to have colored the Earth: Bob Ross.

An insightful group of people at Calm.com realized that more and more people are having trouble falling asleep in this fast-paced 21st century world. So, they sought to remedy this by converting episodes of Bob Ross’ PBS show The Joy of Painting into a series of meditational, sleep-inducing podcasts.

For years, Ross’s mellifluous tones filled homes with peace and calm. He knew that his voice could put people to sleep, but he did not take this as an insult—in fact, he loved that it did.

“We asked ourselves, what would Bob do? Using his voice to help put people to sleep? Well, he would love that,” said Joan Kowalski, president of Bob Ross Inc., according to The New York Times.

LOOKTrouble Sleeping? The ‘Dullest Movie Ever Made’ was Filmed to be a Perfect Cure For Insomnia

It was luck – or fate – that led one of Calm’s founders, Michael Smith, to Bob Ross’ voice. He was browsing a San Francisco bookstore when he stumbled upon “Happy Little Accidents: The Wit and Wisdom of Bob Ross”. Having grown up in England, Smith was not familiar with Bob Ross. Afterwards he searched for Bob Ross online and listened to his show —and he was stunned by what he found.

“His voice blew me away,” Smith told The Times.

Calm contacted Bob Ross Inc. and got the license to release the first installment of the new meditational series in June, and two more episodes since then.

RELATEDNew Best-selling Book Designed to Put Children to Sleep in Minutes

Smith’s ability to see the calming effects of The Joy of Painting for insomnia sufferers is not unique. Ross’ rich voice causing a deep state of relaxation has become something of a case study in the field of autonomous sensory meridian response (ASMR). Craig Richard, who is a professor of physiology at Shenandoah University, used to listen to Ross’s show after school as a boy. Now as a professor, he studies the deep state of relaxation brought on by the beloved fluffy-haired painter.

“I’d get on a floor pillow and fall asleep halfway through” he said. “You don’t need the visual. Just his voice and sounds could trigger a relaxing state.”

The Bob Ross Calm series—you can sign-up for a 7-day free trial membership—features the complete audio from Bob Ross’s show, including his silvery tones and witticisms; his brush strokes on canvas; and the scraping of his knife—all of which send people into a deep slumber, where their dreams become a blank canvas.

Watch What Happens When Kid Dials the Police – So He Can Invite Them to His Birthday

People should only dial the police emergency number when they urgently need help—but when cops in this town learned the reason why a 5-year-old boy was repeatedly calling, they simply had to make an exception.

In honor of his 5th birthday, Zachary wanted to have a police-themed party; and who better to attend a police-themed party than the officers themselves?

So he went ahead and dialed 111 –  the emergency phone number in Auckland, New Zealand – in order to extend an invitation to his party. When he was unsuccessful, he called them several more times.

A concerned police dispatcher called Zachary’s home number only to have his mother Sarah answer the phone in embarrassment.

“Oh my god, I’m so sorry. That was my nearly five-year-old son, he was just telling me that he wanted to invite police to his police-themed fifth birthday party,” says Sarah. “I didn’t realize he was going to phone through!”

Once Sarah explained the situation, the officer can be heard laughing on the other end of the line, saying: “I don’t know if we’ll be able to make it but I’ll put it in.”

As it turns out, some officers were able to make it to Zachary’s party – and the result is incredibly sweet.

In a clip that was uploaded by the New Zealand Police department’s Facebook page, a crew of cops and special officers can be seen arriving on the family’s doorstep with a small stuffed toy in hand for the birthday boy. Once Zachary was able to get over his surprise of welcoming his heroes into his own home, the officers encouraged the youngsters to climb on the cruisers, hold some of their equipment, and wave to the police helicopter circling above.

The department ended the heartwarming video by saying that – while they were happy to grant the boy’s wish – they hope that it doesn’t encourage kids to call 111 unless it is an emergency.

7-Year-old Boy Starts ‘Underground Railroad’ to Rescue Over 1,000 Dogs From Kill Shelters

Roman McConn may only be 7 years old, but he has rescued over 1,000 dogs from a fatal end.

The youngster is the mastermind behind Project Freedom Ride, a charity that saves dogs from euthanasia and pairs them with loving families across the country.

Roman and his mother first got the idea for the project after they adopted their own dog in 2015. Troubled by the high rates of euthanasia in Texas, Roman started making videos for shelter dogs as a means of helping them get adopted.

Roman’s mom also started advocating for no-kill policies to state legislators.

LOOKCyclist Carries Injured Stray Dog to Safety On His Back, Then Bumps into a Stranger Who Instantly Adopts it

Finally, out of a desire to create a kind of “underground railroad” for pups, they launched Project Freedom Ride in 2016 and completed their first transport mission of 31 dogs from Texas to Washington. Now, the mother-son duo rescues an average of over 50 dogs each month.

The charity is not technically a transportation-based rescue effort – they say that PFR is mostly a community effort that is “connecting unwanted, abandoned dogs (and a few cats) who may otherwise be bound for euthanasia in Texas with families, rescues and Humane Societies in the Pacific Northwest.”

“It makes me feel happy saving all these dogs,” Roman told Inside Edition. “But it doesn’t just make me happy, I’m sure it makes all the dogs happy.”

Disney Company Makes Environmental Dreams Come True By Ditching Plastic Straws, and More

Disneyland is now a place where a conservationist’s dreams can come true.

The company just announced that it will stop using single-use straws and plastic stirrers at all their 11 theme parks around the world, part of a broad initiative to cut waste and emissions.

The company says they plan on eliminating the non-renewable plastic products by mid-2019, which will save 175 million straws and 13 million stirrers from landfills annually. In lieu of plastic, Disney will offer versions made out of paper, bamboo, or other more sustainable materials.

Additionally, the company said it would be working to reduce the number of single-use plastic bags and eliminate polystyrene cups that are utilized at their parks, stores, and cruise liners.

The cruises are also set to begin offering refillable in-room amenities, which is expected to “reduce plastics in guest rooms by 80%”, says the company’s press release.

They also reported a 41% reduction of the company’s net greenhouse gas emissions in 2017, and a diversion of nearly 50 percent of its waste from landfills and incineration, making “significant progress” on their long-term goal of net-zero emissions with zero waste.

The CEO of Conservation International, a nonprofit that has worked with Disney to achieve their sustainability goals, called it “a uniquely powerful brand that inspires, educates, and entertains, all at the same time.”

Woman’s Sudden, Dramatic Birth On Her Front Lawn Brings Whole Community Together

Up until this month, the only thing these community members had in common was that they “lived on the same street” – but now they’ve come together, thanks to a newborn baby boy.

Ann-Kathryne Lassègue was at her home in Gatineau, Quebec when she began feeling contractions. Knowing that her unborn child wasn’t due for few weeks, she assumed that it was false labor. The contractions then started getting more severe, so she asked her husband, George-Phillipe Jean, to take her to the hospital just in case the birth was actually commencing.

It was – and they didn’t even make it to the hospital. Instead, Lassègue was walking out of her front door when she screamed in pain, grabbed onto her husband, and the newborn infant fell out onto the pavement.

Stunned by the sudden delivery, Lassègue took one look at the baby and thought it to be dead. The distressed mother passed out unconscious while the couple’s frightened 2-year-old daughter started to wail. Jean, with the premature baby in his arms, cried for help – and help immediately came.

One of the neighbors across the street heard the yells, dialed 911, and ran over to assist the couple. Another neighbor who was alerted to the crisis took it upon himself to start comforting the 2-year-old daughter. Another community member moved one of the vehicles on the street to make way for the ambulance.

During the next five minutes before paramedics arrived, an emergency dispatcher guided the concerned neighbors by telephone through the procedure for tying off the umbilical cord and caring for the mother and baby.

Lassègue and her newborn son were taken to the hospital, and both of them were declared healthy.

The couple says that the experience has restored their faith in humanity and brought their community together.

“The only thing we have in common is that we live on the same street. But at that specific point it was like it was a big family, it was the human community,” Jean told CBC. “It’s the human basic instinct that came out. There was no immigration, no where do you come from, no black or white, just a human being trying to help another human being.”

How to Make Brave Career Choices and Relaunch Your Identity Outside the Corporate Rat Race

The Lesson: There can be a lot of scary emotions that come from changing your career and leaving your corporate identity behind – but it’s more important for you to take control of your future instead. In this podcast, host Joseph Liu talks with Maddie Potvin, a former retail apparel buyer who ditched working at Levi’s and Macy’s to pursue her passions. Together, they discuss the importance of work environments; being able to be kind to yourself throughout your journey; and recognizing that – even though it can seem that you are chained to a job – you can live your life however you want.

Notable Excerpt: “I ended up renting a desk at a co-working space just to kind of get out of the house … that’s where I am right now. That has been really, really helpful and I really wish that I had done this a year ago … it’s just about having a place to get up and go to everyday. When I left Levi’s, I was like ‘I want total flexibility, I could totally work from home, I could be a remote person’, and I’ve realized that’s actually not a good environment for me … I thrive in a little bit more of a collaborative environment and I need to have that social interaction with people, so for me, just physically being in a place that is not my house and having a place I can go to and create a little bit of a structure has been amazing […] simply interacting with other people and talking to other people –whether it’s about work things or not, just the simple fact of social interaction … changes your mindset.”

The Guest: Maddie Potvin is a former retail apparel buyer who bravely chose to forgo climbing the corporate ladder in favor of pursuing other interests, including her passion for exploration and traveling the world alongside her husband. Currently, they are working on building a van and turning it into their “dream adventure mobile” (lovingly nicknamed The Potvan, after their surname). You can tune into her exploits on their Instagram page.

The Host: Joseph Liu is passionate about helping people gain confidence in going after what their hearts desire. After having been through three major career shifts himself, Liu now serves as a Career and Personal Branding Strategist, helping professionals change and relaunch their identities and personal brands. He shares his tips and tricks on his website, and hosts the Career Relaunch Podcast.

Book-Sized Solar Panels Could Power a Whole Home in New Breakthrough

Scientists have developed a pioneering new technique that could generate enough electricity to power an entire home – all by using solar panels that are much smaller than current models.

A team of experts from the University of Exeter has discovered an innovative way for generating photovoltaic (PV) energy – or ways in which to convert light into power.

The new technique relies on ‘funneling’ the sun’s energy more efficiently directly into power cells, such as solar panels or batteries.

Crucially, this ground-breaking method has the potential to harvest three times the energy compared with traditional systems. The researchers believe their breakthrough could result in solar panels, no bigger than a book, producing enough energy to power a family-sized house.

RELATEDPeople Have Passively Planted Over 30 Million Trees Simply by Surfing the Web

The results are published in the leading scientific journal, Nature Communications.

Adolfo De Sanctis, who is the lead author of the paper, said: “The idea is similar to pouring a liquid into a container, as we all know it is much more efficient if we use a funnel. However, such charge funnels cannot be realized with conventional semiconductors and only the recent discovery of atomically thin materials has enabled this discovery.”

CHECK OUTFirst Ever 3D-Printed Cornea Could Restore Vision for Millions of People

In the research, the team of physics experts developed a process to ‘funnel’ electrical charge onto a chip. Using the atomically thin semiconductor hafnium disulphide (HfS2), which is oxidized with a high-intensity UV laser, the team was able to engineer an electrical field that funnels electrical charges to a specific area of the chip, where they can be more easily extracted.

While current solar cells are able to convert around 20% of the energy received from the sun, the new technique has the potential to convert around 60% of it by funneling the energy more efficiently.

A 21-year-old man has just become the first person to travel around the world on a unicycle – and he has raised thousands of dollars for charity in the process.

Over the course of the last 40 months, Ed Pratt has unicycled over 21,000 miles (33,000 kilometers).

His journey has raised over $393,000 (£300,000) for the School in a Bag charity, which provides school supplies and educational equipment to disadvantaged children around the world. The nonprofit’s CEO says that the money will benefit roughly 15,000 needy kids.

The young man set out from his home in Somerset, England in 2015 as a means of finding something meaningful to do after finishing with school. His trip ended up taking 16 months longer than he expected due to rough weather conditions.

Goats: The Surprising Solution to Saving a Country From Wildfires

These herds of goats wandering the countryside may seem like an innocuous part of the scenery, but they’re actually performing a very important job for the government.

As a means of preventing any more wildfires from ravaging the landscape, Portugal is now financing dozens of goat herds to munch away at the dry vegetation that helps wildfires to flourish.

Goats are an environmentally-friendly way of keeping greenery in check, and they’re stunningly good at it. Additionally, the government funding helps support goat herders and farmers in rural parts of the country.

When the Associated Press reported the news in June, they interviewed 61-year-old goatherd Daniel Fernandes. The Portuguese man described how his goat herd saved his family home in 2004 when wildfires crept in on the trees surrounding their residence.

RELATEDHow Chickens and Goats Caused Likelihood of Child Marriage to Plummet by 90%

Because the goats had already eaten and trampled the grass surrounding their home, however, the flames left them unharmed.

While the initiative may be new to Portugal, drought-susceptible regions of the US, such as San Francisco and Arizona, have been using goats as wildfire prevention for over a decade.

MOREGoats Recruited to Eat Away Weeds in New York City

“The goat clearance scheme is one of the key reasons the Bay Area hasn’t had a recurrence of a catastrophic fire in decades,” says Tom Klatt, former manager of the Office of Emergency Preparedness at UC Berkeley and the author of UC Berkeley’s 2007 Fire Mitigation Program Annual Report.

The Portuguese government has taken additional measures for wildfire prevention. According to reports, the nation has added 1,000 more firefighters to their response force and hired several water-dumping planes and a few dozen response helicopters.
