“I started the Photo Ark in 2006 with the idea that if we can illuminate species of all sizes — especially the little ones that don’t get a lot of love — then we might be able to ignite connection and compassion for all of the living things we share this planet with,” Sartore said in a statement.

Red handfish live in a small patch of rocky reef on the southeast coast of Tasmania, and there are believed to be fewer than 250 individuals left in the wild. They’re benthic ocean dwellers, meaning they live on the ocean floor, and they use their fins as “hands” to walk along the seafloor instead of swimming through the water.

Because of their unique locomotion, red handfish are estimated to travel only the length of a standard basketball court in a single year, making them especially vulnerable to habitat loss and destruction from invasive species, human disturbance, pollution, and warming waters. Highest Resolution View of the Sun Reveals Breaking Waves and Magnetic Mysteries

Scientists using Earth’s most powerful solar telescope have snapped a picture of the Sun’s surface that helped explain—for the first time—foundational physics about our dear star.

Situated atop the summit of Haleakalā, a volcano on the island of Maui, the Daniel Inouye Solar Telescope peered down onto the surface of the Sun. Captured in the data is proof that the plasma thereupon is subjected to the same physical force that causes waves to break and whirlpools to form down on Earth’s seas, or among Jupiter’s clouds.

Published in the journal Nature, the authors of a paper on the discovery said it carries “far-reaching implications for our understanding of the creation and dissipation of magnetic fields,” on the Sun’s photosphere.

“The vortex formation on the Sun has long been a central question in solar physics. For the first time, we have identified both their origin and their driving mechanism,” lead study author Dr. David Kuridze, assistant astronomer at the National Solar Observatory in Boulder, Colorado, wrote to CNN in an email.

The phenomenon is known as Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability.

“Although theoretical models had suggested that the right conditions for Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability could exist in the photosphere, seeing these structures widespread across the surface was still a huge surprise.”

The discovery promises a wealth of further information on the mechanics of solar flares and coronal mass ejections, phenomena which, when occurring in the direction of Earth, can interfere with satellite communications and power grids, cause the Northern and Southern lights, and even destroy electrical equipment.

It also could help scientists understand why the Sun’s outer atmosphere is hotter than its surface.

Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability occurs when two fluids moving at different speeds pass each other in different directions. The perturbations caused by the interaction form vortices. The images from the Inouye telescope mark the first time the phenomenon has been seen on the Sun.

Kuridze later told CNN to think of the vortices as small engines that drive magnetism, energy, and heat up from the surface to the Sun’s outer atmosphere. This occurs, in part, through flux braiding, another potential signature of the vortices.

The vortices have the power to intertwine lines of a magnetic field, which generate heat when they snap and reform. For their research, the scientists pointed the Inouye Telescope at a magnetically-active area next to a large Sunspot.

CNN reported that the general consensus in solar physics is that these small solar whirlpools are far more relevant to the formation and expression of massive and rare solar events than other signs in the lead up to those events.

The ultimate reward of this work would be the ability to interpret the formation and movements of the vortices as signs of future, larger events that could potentially affect Earth.

SeaWorld Completes Largest Captive Whale Transportation Operation in Nation’s History

SeaWorld San Antonio recently welcomed 7 rescued beluga whales, following a nearly 2,000 mile journey, as part of an urgent, unprecedented international effort to relocate 30 belugas from a closed marine park in Canada that can no longer support their care.

They join 2 rescued male belugas who arrived on July 21st as part of the first transport, and set a national record for the largest movement of captive cetaceans ever undertaken by a zoo or aquarium.

“Given this is the largest number of belugas being moved at one time, we are so happy that all went well and the second transport of this huge rescue effort is complete,” said Steve Aibel, Vice President, Animals and Conservation for SeaWorld San Antonio, who accompanied both transports.

“All seven female belugas are now at SeaWorld San Antonio. They are receiving veterinary care, nutrition and attention as they acclimate to their new environment.”

GNN reported on the previous group of belugas to depart captivity in Ontario towards ‘bluer’ pastures stateside, when 4 female belugas flew to Chicago via a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 container aircraft.

Kept harnessed onboard in specialized water containers with 24-hour veterinarian supervision, they arrived at the Abbott Oceanarium complex at Shedd Aquarium on July 22nd.

“Moving animals like beluga whales, even under the best of circumstances, is challenging,” Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums which organized the move, and which also partnered with SeaWorld, told CBS News Chicago at the time.

For the 7 beluga whales that headed off towards San Antonio, the process was exactly the same, only more intense.

The 7 female whales who were chosen to move together in a sub-pod are named Xena, Gemini, Skyla, Meeka, Eve, Neva, and Calypso.

The whales are currently housed in a private habitat away from public view while animal care staff focus on their transition. Caretakers are letting each whale adjust at her own pace, watching closely for signs that they are eating well, resting comfortably, and beginning to interact with one another and their new surroundings.

Japanese Team Develops ‘Eco-Fireworks’ with Water-Soluble Shells to Cut Back on Debris

When a man who loves things that go ‘boom’ met a men who loves things that go ‘bloom,’ they realized there was much to gain from an alliance.

Hence, Ryukoku University professor Takahiko Nakaoki and president of Kakinoki Fireworks Industry Co. have created and brought to market what may be the world’s first water-soluble fireworks shells and canisters.

“Of the 20,000 fireworks (we plan to produce this year), I want 10,000 to be eco-friendly ones,” said President Hiroyuki Kakinoki, according to the Mainichi Shimbun.

Mr. Kakinoki met professor Nakaoki in 2018, when the former had been trying to R&D more environmentally friendly fireworks shells, but had then lately abandoned the effort due to repeated failures working with resins.

Rather than develop an entirely new material, the new shells use a water-soluble resin commonly applied to agricultural seeds and soil improvers. Becoming sloughy like hot caramel when wet, the shell can vanish into the ecosystem through this already-approved harmless medium, and no street-sweeper need be troubled in the days after a holiday.

A lot of Japanese fireworks shows occur near water bodies, like large rivers, lakes, or the ocean, meaning most casings will vanish within hours.

Kraft paper is used to keep moisture away from the shell in packaging and storage, but compared to previous use, the water-soluble fireworks will use about half as much paper.

Locals Succeed in Tripling Protected Seascapes Along 300 Miles of Turkiye’s Breathtaking Coastline

From Turkiye’s Mediterranean shore comes the remarkable story of how a group of unsupported conservationists and fishermen received a helping hand from an NGO and restored 300 miles of coastline into a biodiverse marine paradise.

Parts of the area had already been designated as marine sanctuaries, but limited funding, lack of enforcement, disparate connectivity, and absence of local engagement saw its sharks, seals, and turtles vanishing, driven off by lack of food from illegal fishing.

Meanwhile, law-abiding fishing communities who depended on the area’s rich marine biodiversity were suffering reduced catches and lower incomes. Something had to change.

The Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Program (ELSP), a nonprofit born out of a Cambridge University conservation initiative and funded by the billion-pound Arcadia Fund UK, organized a grant program for a team of local Turkish environmentalists to try and take protection of the area into their own hands.

Armed with $3 million, their goal was to restore the bountiful seas between Gökova Bay and Cape Gelidonya, drive out illegal fishing operations, and protect several critical marine ecosystems including rocky Mediterranean coral beds and seagrass meadows. And it started in 2019.

The effort would be led by Turkish conservationist Zafer Kızılkaya, a man who’d go on to win the 2023 Goldman Environmental Prize for the work that ELSP was preparing to fund. Kızılkaya co-founded Akdeniz Koruma Derneği (Mediterranean Conservation Society) which would play a role in the work to come.

Unifying areas and actions

The first challenge for Kızılkaya and his team was whether they could replicate the ecosystem recovery already seen from his work advocating for the establishment of the country’s first community-managed MPA in Gökova Bay, in 2012.

The coal was to expand that success across another 100,000 acres of near-coast ecosystems spanning 6 individual marine protected areas (MPA) with legal protections under Turkish law. Each one harbored a special microenvironment, like a seagrass meadow or a coral reef, but they were separated by non-protected sea.

“If you only protect one area, eventually many species have to leave it. Fish migrate. Sharks migrate. Many species move seasonally. Once they leave that protected area, they are exposed to fishing pressure again,” Kızılkaya told ELSP’s Communications and Network Coordinator Iona Haines in a long-form interview.

The initiative’s key advantage was getting locals on board. Though some fishermen along the coast were skeptical about no-fishing zones, Kızılkaya simply brought along fishermen from Gökova, who’d already experienced the increase in catch sizes following the establishment of the bay’s MPA 7 years earlier.

Haines states that the project helped create or expand 18 no-fishing zones between 2019 and 2023 along the 310 miles of coastline, with special “highly protected” areas being added to the existing MPAs. This lead to a tripling of the total protected seascapes in Turkish territorial waters by 2020.

Next, the project recruited and trained locals to act as “marine rangers” after Turkish coast guard staff told the project team that between refugees, illegal immigration, smuggling, and human trafficking, there were no resources leftover to scare off illegal fishermen. These local marine rangers, however, knew very well where the illegal fishermen operated, and worked—sometimes at great personal peril—to drive them off in collaboration with local law enforcement. Illegal fishing fell 80% in the years that followed.

It was only a few years later that fishermen began to report increased catches, something that has been proven time and time again to occur in the fishable waters around MPAs.

Increased catches coincided with the return of sandbar sharks, and the Turkish coast is in fact the only part of the Mediterranean that acts as a home to sharks year-round. Also returning is the Endangered Mediterranean monk seal—over 30 so far call the area home.

“Tourism has grown. The nUmber of boats visiting these areas has increased. There is still fishing pressure in many places, yet monk seal numbers have continued to rise. That tells us something important about what protection can achieve,” said Kızılkaya.

Still, Kızılkaya stressed that seals move. Sharks migrate. Species that reproduce in a protected area spill over into the wider environment and faced renewed threats. Attempting to address this, the Gökova Bay to Cape Gelidonya Project is now focused on establishing and protecting ecological corridors that link crucial habitat along this 310-mile coastline.

Compared to 2012, the feeling is entirely different—and not just in the Med.

“There are now amazing projects all over the Mediterranean and all over the world. 15 years ago, it felt like everyone was working in isolation. Today there is a real community. People share ideas, learn from each other and support each other. We’ve seen fish populations return, we’ve seen communities benefit and we’ve seen species come back. That gives me hope.”

It’s not just conservationists either. Earlier this year, GNN interviewed a Turkish bird enthusiast who worked to stabilize the population of bald ibis that migrates to eastern Anatolia. He told of a generation growing up for the first time with enough wealth to care about the wild lands around them. Who could afford binoculars and telescopic camera lenses, and who were interested in safeguarding their country’s natural wonders.

A man who dresses up every year as Santa Claus to spread Christmas cheer has just delivered a very special present.

Though central Virginia is far too hot for Santa’s reindeer to flyover, the gift couldn’t wait until December.

Dave Bell is well known as the town’s go-to Santa Claus, and has done so for years, lighting up children’s faces with smiles in Powhatan. Bell recently donated a kidney to an anonymous recipient, and wore the Santa hat on the hospital bed during recovery at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital.

“I have two of these things, and I only need one,” Bell said. “There’s somebody who has none and they need one.”

Though demonstrating his commitment to the Santa spirit and the spirit of Christmas besides, Bell now has a lot of work to do to get back into Santa-shape in time for the holidays; he had to shed 40 pounds to be eligible to donate.

“Stories like Dave’s make organ donation feel real and personal,” Dr. Amanda Bailey, transplant surgeon at the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, told WTVR.

A company which learned that Singapore’s recycling rates have “plateaued” around 11% is deploying over 100 refill machines for cleaning products around the city.

Reducing the cost of packaging has allowed the household product manufacturer Lam Soon to offer their Bio-Home line of goods at a 30% discount if filled up at the vending machine-style refill stations.

According to Lam Soon, in a report on the stations published in the Mothership, the national recycling rate in the city-state has plateaued at about 11% of waste—far from the government’s goal of 70% by 2030.

“Upstream” solutions—this is, changes in the supply chain before things become waste—are needed to cross the plateau, and Lam Soon, which manufacturers a variety of biodegradable home products including laundry detergent, dishwasher liquid, and floor cleaner, felt stocking the refill stations rather than store shelves would allow them to eliminate the opportunity for bottles to even become waste in the first place.

Because there’s no bottle or packaging, prices can be cut, while consumers can use their own, larger containers, over and over again. Indeed prices start at about SGD$4.80 per liter.

To execute, Lam Soon invested $1 million into the hardware and tech startup Ecoworks, which designed the refill stations and is now working to install them across the city at over 100 locations. Already they can be found at 2 university campuses and a community center.

“Ecoworks has identified what is required for reuse to scale—convenient, standardized infrastructure in every neighborhood,” the company said.

Called “The Queen of the Waves,” she was an Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder in 5 events for which she received a ticker-tape parade on her return from the games in Paris in 1924. Used for Centuries as Poison, Larkspur, Wolfsbane May Become Medicine After Lab Breakthrough

Two famously toxic plants—known also to treat pain, malaria, cancer, and pests—may have had those medicinal properties synthesized in a lab for the first time.

The researchers behind the discovery believe “plants are the best chemists”—and their breakthrough demonstrates that next-generation drugs don’t need to come from chemists’ inventions.

Centered on the plants wolfsbane and larkspur, the discovery comes about through a collaboration between scientists at Michigan State University and the Czech Academy of Sciences, and is published in the journal Molecular Plant.

“These plants have been used in different forms of medicine throughout the world for thousands of years,” said MSU alum Garret Miller, co-first author of the paper and now an assistant professor of biotechnology at University of Michigan-Flint.

“We know they interreact with our bodies in so many ways, and understanding how to create them can help provide totally new routes of testing.”

“Plants are the best chemists around, upgrading their arsenal of natural compounds over millions of years to help them survive,” said Björn Hamberger, study author an Endowed Professor in MSU’s Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

At MSU, the Hamberger Lab explores these diverse compounds, better known as specialized metabolites, and how they can be leveraged for the greater good. History has shown they’re more than capable of the opposite, with wolfsbane possibly at the seen of multiple historic assassinations, including Socrates, Alexander of Macedon, and Cleopatra’s sister.

In more recent years his team had set their sights on larkspur—also called delphinium for its dolphin-shaped flowers—wanting to know exactly how the plant produced a mix of toxic-yet-promising chemicals known as diterpenoid alkaloids.

Diterpenoid alkaloids are the intersection of the two oldest and largest classes of plant chemicals on the planet, and researchers have faced an uphill battle to determine their mind-bendingly complex structures.

Despite being isolated nearly 200 years ago, one of the best-known compounds, aconitine, still hasn’t been successfully synthesized in a lab. The genesis of that discovery began serendipitously.

While attending a research conference in Barcelona, Hamberger crossed paths with scientists from the lab of Tomáš Pluskal at the Czech Academy of Sciences.

The Pluskal Group, including Lana Mutabdžija, a graduate student at the Czech Academy of Sciences and co-first author of the latest paper, were pursuing the same tricky diterpenoid alkaloids in a notoriously poisonous larkspur relative, wolfsbane, otherwise known as monkshood.

The two labs decided to join forces, before beginning the task of identifying the exact chemical pathway the two plants took to produce their diterpenoid alkaloids.

Because plants naturally produce specialized metabolites slowly and in tiny amounts, discovering these pathways is a vital step toward engineering plant chemistries that can tackle real-world, large-scale challenges.

After solving a pathway, the unique genetic blueprints for a compound can be inserted into a specially engineered host organism, such as yeast. Through this bit of biohacking, the organism will begin producing the compound on its own in larger quantities, paving the way for expanded testing and development.

“In an ideal scenario, this could eventually help create new drugs inspired by these natural products,” said Mutabdžija.

Once the team narrowed down a promising set of genes in wolfsbane and larkspur, those genetic codes were inserted into tobacco plants, which acted as ready-made biofactories.

When these tobacco plants were analyzed for the chemicals they’d been producing after being given new genes, the team found 6 unique enzymes that successfully created a diterpenoid alkaloid called atisinium.

These enzymes helped the compound fold into its complex final shape, and they facilitated the addition of a crucial and unexpected nitrogen source.

Knowing the initial biochemical steps needed to produce atisinium gives researchers a new foothold on the path to unlocking the potent, medicinal qualities found across the larger diterpenoid alkaloid family.

UN Summit on HIV/AIDS Shows Incredible Progress in Infection Rates, Deaths, Treatment Access

New HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths are at their lowest levels in more than 30 years, a special report released by UNAIDS shows.

Released in time for the 26th International AIDS Conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro, it also showed that 7 countries: Benin, Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Nepal, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe, achieved an almost 80% reduction in new infections since 2010.

It further showed that 11 countries achieved the “95-95-95” treatment targets, meaning that 95% of all people living with HIV know their status, 95% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection are accessing antiretroviral therapy (ART), 95% of all people accessing ART are virally suppressed.

“The world is on the cusp of an HIV prevention revolution in prevention medicines which offer close to vaccine like protection against HIV,” UNAIDS wrote in a statement.

“Monthly and six-month injections are slowly trickling into the market, and monthly pills are in late-stage trials. What is coming to market and in the pipeline is extraordinary.”

Other positive news in the report shows that Brazil has increased the number of people accessing HIV prevention medicines at least once in the past year by 41%. Ethiopia and Uganda also took action to expand access through domestic and other funding, and South Africa is continuing to negotiate pricing deals for the twice-yearly prevention injections lenacapavir.

In June, GNN reported on the results of the Purpose 1 trial for lenacapavir, which showed 0 HIV infections among 3,200 young female participants, an unthinkable success rate.

Grady-White Boats market their vessels as the “finest boats ever crafted” which is quite the statement.

GNN can’t comment on boat quality, but they certainly don’t make humans like Grady-White’s ex-CEO much anymore.

For 58 years, Eddie Smith Jr. worked 80-100 hour workweeks to salvage the near-bankrupt boat builder and turn it into a 9-figure revenue generator that will now power philanthropy in perpetuity.

That’s because Smith turned down multiple offers around half a billion dollars in order to pass controlling stakes in Grady-White Boats to a “purpose trust” that will operate it according to his values and convert its bottom line into community service, conservation, and other philanthropic causes.

Profiled by Preston Foore at Fortune Magazine, Smith said he was inspired by entrepreneurs like Yvon Chouinard, the founder of Patagonia, who also turned the brand into a financial engine for conservation and climate change prevention.

“I just think that those of us that are fortunate enough to be in a position to help others…It’s really a gift to me to be able to do what I do,” Smith told Fortune.

Born to a father who was orphaned at age 10 during the Great Depression, Smith Jr. grew up near the poverty line. The first break was when his father worked enough odd jobs to start a mail order business. The son, who remembers eating SPAM 3 times a week, then lied about his age to get a job on a paper route, before becoming the first in his family to graduation from college (U of North Carolina) in 1965.

Finding Grady-White Boats in a near-bankrupt state, Smith Jr., who described himself as having an “entrepreneurial itch” to prove himself, borrowed some money and took over the business, forsaking golf, his favorite pastime, for over 30 years.

He proceeded to pour his heart and soul into the project before successfully turning it around to the state it’s in today—where revenues average over $100 million per annum.

After he lost his wife and then his son to ALS, his golden years seemed abruptly grey, and suddenly the big offers he was receiving to sell the company—and potentially destroy the culture of self-betterment and hard work he tailor-made over the decades—became easy to turn down.

He looked around at his other CEO friends, and saw that those who sold their businesses had “lost their way.”

“All of them were really disappointed in what happened to their companies after the sale. They lost their way,” Smith told Fortune. “They lost their culture that they had built, and I just couldn’t bear the thought of that happening.”

Instead, Smith signed Grady-White Boats over to a perpetual purpose trust, who collected his controlling state as voting shares in the company under conditions that they never be sold. The trust will continue to operate the business under Smith’s values, including profit sharing and spending big on employee education resources.

The rest of the non-voting shares will be placed in a 501(c)4—a social welfare organization—that will donate all profits to charitable causes.

Single Fossil Shows a Pterosaur Eaten by an Ichthyosaur Eaten by a Pliosaur: ‘A 3-Way Chompfest’

In what must rank as one of the rarer fossil assemblages ever discovered, an incredible moment where the whole top-third of the Cretaceous era marine food chain was being sorted out has been presented by scientists.

Following 7 years of study, the jumble of bones is nothing less than the remains of a flying reptile known as a pterosaur lodged inside the stomach of an ichthyosaur—a large and widely-dispersed, versatile marine predator.

The ichthyosaur’s body was determined to have been mangled by something even larger—likely a pliosaur, and perhaps even Kronosaurus queenslandicus, the largest pliosaurid known to have lived, and as the species name suggests, was first discovered in the Australian state of Queensland, where the fossil jumble was found.

“[It is] a marine reptile crime scene, and it did take a bit of working out to tell that story,” Dr. Matt White, a paleontologist at the University of New England in Australia and lead author of the study presenting the discovery, tells ABC News Down Under.

The story of said discovery begins in 2019 when recreational fossil hunters were out for a day’s “fossicking,” an Aussie term for prospecting for minerals, gems, and fossils on a recreational or amateur basis, but with a license.

Two couples, Mike and Cathy Freeman and Gary and Barb Flewelling, found several large bones, jotted down their location, and donated them to a local paleontological museum dedicated to the research of the prehistoric sea which used to cover Queensland.

Unsure of what to make of the assemblage of fossils, the museum curators respectfully labeled them as “Bob” short for “bag o’ bones.”

3 years later, the curator at Kronosaurus Korner museum Kevin Petersen returned to the site and uncovered the rest of what proved to be a large, partially articulated ichthyosaur skeleton stretching almost 21 feet across the excavation.

The remains bore the signs of a brutal attack, with missing ribs, bones punctured by teeth, and disfigured vertebrae. At roughly 18-20 feet in length the ichthyosaur, like a cross between a crocodile and a dolphin, was a formidable and versatile hunter and large to boot. Petersen and the rest of the staff knew that only one thing could have wrapped its jaws around the body of the creature—a pilosaur.

Pliosaurs were aquatic carnivorous reptiles, not dinosaurs, that lived between 220 and 70 million years ago. Their short necks have seen them depicted like fish with the mouth of a crocodile, or something awfully similar to a seal, but they were enormous hunters, capable of reaching an impressive 10 meters in body length.

Dr. White and his co-authors wrote in their study that, up until now, very little evidence of pliosaur bites have been documented—their mouths were so large they left little behind to fossilize. The evidence on the torso of the ichthyosaur is one of an initial crushing bite, followed by several repositioning or tearing bites—notably similar to how crocodilians take prey still to this day.

This was a novel interaction of pliosaur-ichthyosaur food chain relations, but it would get stranger not long after.

More than 600 volunteer and staff hours were invested preparing the ichthyosaur specimen for examination before several unusual rock nodules behind the skull prompted scientists to investigate further. Rather than breaking the rocks apart and risking damage, researchers sent them to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO), where advanced synchrotron CT scanning allowed scientists to look inside without destroying the fossil.

There, they found the remains of fish, squid, and the jawbone of a pterosaur—a family of flying reptiles that ruled the skies during the age of the dinosaurs. Whether the ichthyosaur had snatched a pterosaur from the sky or fed upon it in a scavenging event is impossible to know, and the researchers believe the partially-digested remains were catapulted up towards the animal’s head from the force of the pilosaur’s bite, though they admit there’s a very small chance it could also have simply fallen atop the ichthyosaur’s remains from the ocean above.

More likely, they wrote, it’s the first confirmed evidence that ichthyosaurs ate pterosaurs.

“It’s one of the clearest examples ever discovered of a three-tier predator interaction and offers an unprecedented snapshot of behavior in Australia’s Cretaceous seas,” stated Dr. Dean Lomax, a renowned paleontologist who recently visited Australia for the first time during Queensland Dinosaur Week.

Speaking further with ABC, Dr. White said that the exact sequence of predation is unknown, but that’s the “exciting thing.”

“[We just know] this is what’s happened to the fossil, and what happened in the exact term of events we don’t know, but that’s half the exciting thing of paleontology.”

“But did the actual kronosaurus leap out of the water and smash the ichthyosaur? Or was the ichthyosaur breaching the water and snatching a pterosaur out of mid-air to eat?” he added.

Self-Healing Contact Lenses Repair Scratches with Just 1 Hour of UV Light Exposure

A major, early-stage advancement in vision technology comes to us now from South Korea, where researchers created a contact lens that repairs scratches automatically when exposed to sunlight.

A scratched lens can mean an expensive replacement, but the UV light-activated hydrogel can repair these small imperfections in under an hour.

The technology also offers greater durability and an antibacterial coating to create a robust and resistant, superior contact lens.

Researchers Jung-Hyun Choi and Byung-Ki Cho used the already widely-employed hydrogel to create their new prototype contact lenses while redesigning the complex polymer structure. Through a process known as disulfide exchange, UV light at a wavelength of 365 nanometers causes sulfur bonds in the gel to temporarily break apart and reconnect with neighboring atoms.

Before and after photos released in a study presenting their invention show how these new connections equate to a repaired scar on the surface of the lens.

Choi and Cho explain that eventually, the lenses could be repaired at home as well—through UV light from devices used to cure nail polish, or indoor grow lamps for houseplants.

SEEING A BETTER WORLD:

Atop the hydrogel structure, an additional layer of polymer was applied that resists bacterial buildup and abrasion, even after repeated contact with sandpaper. It retained moisture better than commercially-available contact lenses too, and the repaired scratches had a mere 2% perceptibility score, suggesting that multiple scratches could be repaired and tolerated before a replacement was needed due to transparency issues.

Additional testing for South Korean regulatory approval is needed, the authors explain, before the product can undergo market testing. The technology could reduce waste and lower replacement costs for millions of contact lens users.

The study, funded in part by the National Research Foundation of RoK, was published in ACS Applied Polymer Materials.

Longest Predator Exclusion Fence in the Pacific Protects Thousands of Ground-Nesting Seabirds

In 2022, the longest “predator exclusion fence” anywhere in the Pacific was completed on Kauai, encircling 168 acres of prime seabird nesting habitat.

The nesting birds include endangered species that were under constant threat of ravaging feral cats and pig before the 11,200-foot-long fence was raised.

Now, 4 years later, these seabirds are following their ancestral instincts and raising their chicks just meters away from nest sites that, 5 years before, would have double as their grave sites.

Originally developed on New Zealand, a predator exclusion fence (PEF) is no mean fence. It was designed to block passage of the 4 most deadly invasive mammalian predators across the Pacific.

It’s too high for a cat or fox to jump over, is capped with a slick, claw-proof hood to prevent cats from climbing over, includes a combination rubber mat and skirt multiple inches below the ground to prevent pigs burrowing under, and boasts a metal mesh no teeth can chew through, yet also so fine that no rat can slide through it. The fence cost $1.7 million.

A similar fence on Oahu saw the number of Newell’s shearwater chicks quadruple in the first several years after it was completed. This is the kind of progress that the US Fish and Wildlife Service, in concert with local partners on Kauai, wanted to bring to Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

Therewithin, the hills and pinnacles of Nihokū and Mokolea Point present as ideal, and ancestrally conserved nesting habitat for a variety of birds, including Newellʻs shearwater, red-footed boobies, red-tailed and white-tailed tropicbirds, great frigatebirds, the endangered Hawaiian petrel, and the Laysan albatross. The PEF also shelters the Critically-Endangered Hawaiian hoary bat, and the Critically-Endangered nēnē or Hawaiian goose—the state bird.

HELPING HAWAII: 

Nihokū and Mokolea are located on the northern shore where little artificial light pollution exists to disorient the birds, like petrels, which navigate by the stars and Moon. Neither are there any powerlines or other elevated obstructions that the birds could collide with.

Until such a time as when the island can appropriately contain, remove, or otherwise deal with invasive animals, this special fence will help create a sanctuary—a veritable seabird factory—that will keep these iconic aviators of the Hawaiian skies alive in the long term.
