Watch Nic Cage Choke Back Emotion, Meeting Coast Guard Heroes to Thank Them for Hurricane Work

Nicolas Cage was in Alabama last weekend filming his new movie “Between Worlds” and he took time to visit a U.S. Coast Guard training center. He choked back his emotions delivering a prepared speech to personally thank the brave men and women for their hurricane response efforts.

The winner of a U.N. Award for his humanitarian work and an avid fundraiser for causes from homelessness to Parkinson’s disease, and Amnesty International to child solders overseas, Cage seems to have a special empathy for those caught in the wake of hurricanes, having donated a million dollars following the destruction from Katrina.

He arrived in Mobile to talk to a small crowd of Coast Guard service members and their families who have been involved with rescue efforts after Hurricane Harvey in Texas, and Irma in the Southeast. The work of these first responders “really hit home for him.”

The appreciation in the faces of those who listened to him speak was evident, and one man brushed away tears.

“Through the many search and rescue missions and clearing the way so citizens can evacuate, we see the compassion that our military has for its people,” he began. “The horror that these heroes experience during these search and rescue missions, will be etched in their hearts and minds forever.”

“As a family man myself, I find it hard to imagine having to say goodbye to my family not knowing if I may never see them again… I can only imagine the bravery and strength it takes, working through floodwater, going door to door looking for survivors, pulling people out of the wreckage that they used to call home.”

His voice shaking in the end, he concludes: “You are the shining example of what Lincoln called the better angels of our nature. You are the heart and soul of America. Your humanitarian effort toward your brother and sister states remind all of us how to be American.”

You Can’t Help But Smile When You Watch This Humble Woman’s Excitement Over a New Office Chair

Sometimes it is the smallest things that make us the happiest.

This is exactly the case for Brenda Hardy, the Membership Manager at the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta, Georgia.

A clip uploaded to the organization’s Facebook Page shows the moment Hardy was informed by the board members that she can go to an office supply store and pick out a new chair for her desk – and the rejoicing begins.

“She is so busy helping others that she doesn’t ever take the time to think about herself,” one of the workers told Good News Network. “She was so ecstatic when she found out she would have the opportunity to pick out a new chair, she couldn’t hold in her excitement!”

“Usually, the employees are so focused on serving Club Members that they appreciate gestures many other people would take for granted!”

In the video, Brenda can be seen strutting about the office, excitedly singing such catchy tunes as “You’re the One I Want” from Grease, and jumping for joy. Her reaction is so contagiously happy, it is impossible not to smile while watching the clip.

How a Lost Purse Got a Heroin Addict on the Path to Recovery

Aeric McCoy was a heroin addict living on the streets of Baltimore when he found Kaitlyn Smith’s abandoned purse in an alley back in July. Little did he know, that purse would become his key to recovery.

When he found the expensive purse in “an unsavory part of town”, he found a wallet, several receipts, utility bills, and notes belonging to someone named Kaitlyn. Though the cash and credit cards were all gone, he was spurred to try and return the purse to the original owner.

After locating her address on one of the electric bills, Aeric then began a long, arduous journey to Kaitlyn’s neighborhood. He was kicked out of stores when he tried asking for directions and he had to sell his bus pass in exchange for a subway ticket.

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn had already assumed that her purse was long gone when she saw Aeric walking through her neighborhood.

“My roommate and I were walking down our street to a friend’s surprise party when I saw a man in a tattered, dirty white t-shirt and jeans hustling toward us, head down… carrying my purse!” says Kaitlyn.

“I offered the man money to buy it, which he politely declined and insisted he had to return it to a lady named Kaitlyn, who lived up the street. I told him I was that lady, and he melted down, exhausted, saying he found it in an alley near Upton Market.”

“He told me … he wanted to return my purse because someone had recently stolen his sleeping bag from the abandoned house where he was staying and he could only imagine my frustration as he had felt the same way.”

RELATED14 Years After Decriminalizing Heroin, Here’s What Portugal Looks Like

Touched by Aeric’s kindness, Kaitlyn and her friend gave him clothes, a flashlight, a new sleeping bag, a backpack, and a ride home.

It was on this drive that Aeric told his new acquaintance about how he was a drug user. He also explained how he used to run a lucrative landscaping business until an accident left him unable to work three years ago. The painkillers, combined with his loss of income, led him down the slippery slope to addiction.

RELATEDI Transformed Haunting Memories in This Town By Returning to Those Places With Gifts

Despite the hardships, Aeric spoke of how badly he wanted to get clean and how he one day hoped to attend a recovery facility in Fort Myers, Florida for treatment.

Kaitlyn gave Aeric her number and said that – in gratitude for returning her purse – she would be more than happy to pay for his plane ticket south if he ever decided to go.

“Several days later, on a borrowed phone, he called to say he had contacted the rehab facility in Florida and they had a space for him if he could get there. I called the facility to verify what Aeric told me and intake confirmed that they were prepared to pick him up from the airport and begin treatment if Aeric could get there.”

Fast forward several months and Aeric is about to celebrate 100 days sober.

Using the $12,300 from a GoFundMe campaign that “Kait the Great” started for her new friend, she and Aeric have repurchased all the needed landscaping equipment and fixed up a truck with a trailer that is sturdy enough to carry the gear. The plan is to reboot his business in Maryland at the start of the spring season.

While Aeric is still enrolled in a 90-day outpatient treatment program in Baltimore, he says that he has never felt more optimistic about his future – and it is all thanks to Kaitlyn and her purse.

“Everything about the situation was peculiar. Here was this homeless stranger, finding and returning my lost purse, doing a good deed–and wanting help getting into rehab as a thank you,” Kaitlyn told Good News Network.

“He said the purse materialized out of thin air in an alley while he was shooting dope, and I believe him because every day since I met him some positive revelation has happened that can’t be explained, other than being divine intervention,” she added in an email.

“Aeric is very spiritual and he has helped me find patience and peace as we’ve worked together through the challenges of recovery. He loved helping people before and, ironically, he’s now living at the very mission where he once volunteered and took classes. For me, this affirms that there’s a plan for each of us, and the door opens when your heart opens.”

Once Bullied For Her Love Of Bugs, 8-Year-old Co-Authors Scientific Paper

8-year-old girls are not often encouraged to play with bugs and insects, yet Sophia Spencer has become an entomological prodigy—and a role model for other girls interested in biology.

The youngster had been teased for how much she loved bugs. Whenever she was seen playing with grasshoppers, the other second graders at her elementary school would call her weird.

“She is often teased at school by her peers because she will proudly display her current bug friend on her shoulder,” wrote Sophia’s mom Nicole.

Worried about her daughter’s confidence in the scientific field, Nicole sent a letter to the Entomological Society of Canada last year asking for encouragement.

“She has asked me for over a year if this is a job she can do one day, exploring and learning more about bugs and insects. I have told her that of course, she could; however, I am at a loss on how to continue to encourage her.”

“I was wondering if a professional entomologist would speak to her over the phone to encourage her love and explain to her how she could make this into a career. I am constantly looking for articles and information on the species and how to recognize them, but find the lack of answers to her questions unhelpful.”

“If someone could maybe talk to her for even five minutes, or who won’t mind being a penpal for her, I would appreciate it so much. I want her to know from an expert that she is not weird or strange (what kids call her) for loving bugs and insects.”

MORETeen Creates ‘Sit With Us’ App For Bullied School Children

The society then tweeted the letter to their followers asking for help and support – and the response was overwhelming.

Hundreds of entomologists – female and otherwise – flooded the society’s inbox with kind words and offers of assistance under the hashtag #BugsR4Girls.

One entomologist told Sophia that she was free to visit their lab anytime. Another scientist offered to send her any nets, papers, supplies, and books she might want to pursue her insect interest. Another offered to show Sophia her bug collection.

Sophia made such a big splash in the scientific community, she became a co-author of a paper published in the Annals of the Entomological Society of America with Morgan Jackson, a P.h.D of entomology from the University of Guelph in Ontario.

The paper, entitled “Engaging for a Good Cause: Sophia’s Story and Why #BugsR4Girls,” explores how Twitter can be utilized by the scientific community.

“After my mom sent the message and showed me all the responses, I was happy,” she wrote in her portion of the paper. “I felt like I was famous. Because I was! It felt good to have so many people support me, and it was cool to see other girls and grown-ups studying bugs. It made me feel like I could do it too, and I definitely, definitely, definitely want to study bugs when I grow up, probably grasshoppers.”

“Kids now, after I told them the whole story, they’re like, ‘Oh, well — could you teach me more about bugs?’” Sophia told NPR. “And I’m like, ‘Sure.’

“And a lot of the kids stopped bullying me about it. I feel really good.”

Persistent Pup Scores Job and Adoration After Charging into Soccer Game For Fetch

When this persistent pup charged onto a soccer field mid-game, she not only inspired her team to win the match – her interruption also landed her a job.

The canine first made her appearance 29 minutes into the soccer game between San Lorenzo and Arsenal de Sarandí at the Estadio Pedro Bidegain in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Sunday night.

The dog took possession of the ball and decided to show off some of her moves – and for being a relatively small dog, she was pretty impressive.

Some of the players can be seen trying to coax her into giving the ball back and leaving the field, but the furry football player refuses to leave without having some fun. After a minute or two of hilarity, the pup managed to score some passes – and some belly rubs – before being taken off the field.

When San Lorenzo went on to score a single goal that won them the game, the players, fans, spectators, and reporters firmly believed that the young pup was a good luck charm for the team.

Mom Cries When Elderly Stranger Tells Why He Gave Her Son $20

This mother never thought that she would be crying over stuffed animals from Target – but after a visit to the store earlier this week, she couldn’t help but tear up.

Alyssa Hacker was at the department store with her 18-month-old son Owen in Fort Smith, Arkansas when they found the toy section. Delighted by the toys, Owen started playing with three of the stuffed dinosaurs.

While Alyssa was trying to figure out which of the three toys her son wanted, Owen suddenly said “Hi!” to an elderly stranger in the aisle.

Alyssa says that this behavior is not out of the ordinary for her son because he is a very outgoing toddler. She even says that his favorite thing to do is say “hi” and “bye” to strangers.

After he greeted the man in the store, however, the senior responded by saying: “Hey sweet boy”.

Despite Alyssa being wary of strangers getting too close to her son, the man and the boy began to chat and play. Suddenly, the man pulled out his wallet.

“After Owen yelled ‘thank you’ the gentleman turned around and yelled boomer sooner! There is still some good in this world.”

Alyssa did use the $20 to buy the dinosaurs, and she later spoke to TODAY, saying: “These three stuffed dinosaurs have more meaning than I ever thought a stuffed animal from Target could have. We will hold on to these memories forever!”

Tribute to the Russian Who Once Single-handedly Averted a Global Nuclear War (1939–2017)

The Soviet military officer Stanislav Petrov who single-handedly averted a worldwide nuclear war when he chose to believe his intuition instead of the computer screen, has died at age 77.

His country, the Soviet Union, was already on high alert in 1983, expecting retaliation for its downing of the Korean Air jet, when the Lieutenant Colonel saw an indication on the computer that the U.S. had launched a nuclear missile attack against them. He had no confirmation of the launch and only minutes to decide his course of action.

He was the officer on duty at the Serpukhov-15 bunker near Moscow on September 26, when the Cold War was at a peak. Just three and a half weeks prior, the Soviets had shot down a Boeing 747, killing all 269 people on board. It was Lt. Col. Petrov’s responsibility to observe the satellite early warning network and notify his superiors of any impending nuclear missile attack against the USSR. In the event of such an attack, the Soviet Union’s strategy was to launch an immediate all-out nuclear counter-attack against the United States, as the doctrine of Mutual Assured Destruction required.

Just past midnight, at 00:40 hrs, the bunker’s computers indicated that an American missile was heading toward the Soviet Union. Lt. Col. Petrov reasoned that a computer error had occurred, since the United States was not likely to launch just one missile if it were attacking the Soviet Union — it would launch many simultaneously. Also, the satellite system’s reliability had in the past been questioned, so he dismissed the warning as a false alarm, concluding that no missile had actually been launched by the Americans.

POPULARThe Idea That Turned Russian Warheads Into American Electricity

However, a short time later, the computers indicated that a second missile had been launched, followed by a third, a fourth and a fifth. Petrov still felt that the computer system was wrong, but there was no other source of information with which to confirm his suspicions. In 22 minutes he would know for sure. The Soviet Union’s land radar was not capable of detecting missiles beyond the horizon, so by the time land radar could positively identify the threat, it would be too late.

Petrov’s dilemma was this: if he was disregarding a real attack, then the Soviet Union would be devastated by nuclear weapons without any warning or chance to retaliate, and he would have failed at his duty. On the other hand, if he were to report a non-existent attack, his superiors might launch an equally catastrophic assault against their enemies. In either case, millions of people would die. Understanding that if he were wrong, nuclear missiles would soon be raining down on the Soviet Union, Petrov decided to trust his intuition and declare the system’s indications a false alarm.

Even under immense pressure and stress, Petrov’s judgement had been sound–and a full-scale nuclear war averted.

THE AFTERMATH

Despite having prevented potential nuclear disaster, by refusing to acknowledge the computer system’s warnings Lt. Col. Petrov had disobeyed his orders and defied military protocol. He was subjected to intense questioning about his actions.

The Soviet military did not punish Petrov for his actions, but did not reward or honor hm either. His actions had revealed imperfections in the Soviet military system casting his superiors in a bad light. He was given a reprimand, officially for the improper filing of paperwork. He was no longer considered a reliable officer and his once-promising military career came to an end. He was reassigned to a less sensitive post and ultimately retired from the military.

Petrov lived his later years in relative poverty, spending his retirement in the town of Fryazino. He has said he does not regard himself as a hero for what he did that day, “I was just doing my job.”

On May 21, 2004, the San Francisco-based Association of World Citizens gave Colonel Petrov its World Citizen Award along with a trophy and $1000 in recognition of the part he played in averting catastrophe. In January 2006, Petrov traveled to the New York City where the Association honored him at the United Nations and the journalist Walter Cronkite interviewed him.

California Becomes First State to Ban Pet Shop Sales of Non-Rescued Animals

Rburtzel, CC license

After a bill was unanimously passed in the Senate earlier this week, California has become the first state to ban the commercial breeding of dogs, cats, and rabbits.

The legislation, AB-485, is a direct blow against the use of puppy mills: facilities that breed animals in crowded, dirty, and inhumane conditions.

Now, the bill will instead force pet stores and dealers to only allow the adoption and sale of animals from rescue organizations, animal shelters, and humane societies.

CHECK OUT: San Francisco Officially Declares Itself a No-Styrofoam Zone

All pet stores in the state of California will now have to “maintain records sufficient to document the source of each dog, cat, or rabbit the pet store sells” and “to post, in a conspicuous location on the cage or enclosure of each animal, a sign listing the name of the entity from which each dog, cat, or rabbit was obtained”.

Any pet stores that could be found guilty of selling commercially bred animals can be fined up to $500 for each violation.

Once the bill is signed by Governor Brown, it will come into full effect in January 2019.

“The California legislature’s passage of Assembly Bill 485 is a landmark victory and one that we have championed for decades,” said Chris DeRose, Last Chance for Animals president and founder. “We are elated that our home state is leading the way on this important issue. Requiring pet stores to sell only rescue and shelter animals is a bold venture – but one that will help rehome some of the six million unwanted animals that enter shelters each year.”

Students of Acid Attack Forgive Their Assailant: “Mental illness is not a choice”

These girls may have been the victim of a crime, but they are insisting on showing kindness to their attacker, rather than bitterness.

Four Boston College students who have been studying abroad in France and Denmark were attacked by a 41-year-old woman with a mental illness this weekend when they were visiting Marseilles.

The woman threw a weak hydrochloric solution on the students in the city’s train station and though it was not a very strong solution, the acid got into the eyes of two of the students.

The woman reportedly sat down on the curb until police arrived on the scene and the students were rushed to the hospital.

None of the girls suffered any injuries, but two of them did take to Facebook after the incident and asked their friends and family to pray for their attacker.

One of the students, Courtney Siverling, wrote: “Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out to see if I’m ok and/or has been praying for us. I did not receive any injuries from the attack in Marseille this morning and we are all safe.”

“I pray that the attacker would be healed from her mental illness in the name of Jesus and receive the forgiveness and salvation that can only come from Him.”

Michelle Krug wrote something similar, saying: “I ask that if you send thoughts and prayers our way, please consider thinking about/praying for our attacker so that she may receive the help she needs and deserves.”

“Mental illness is not a choice and should not be villainized.”

The women “have stated their intention to remain in Europe for their studies and have offered forgiveness to the woman who attacked them, an individual who police say suffers from mental illness,” Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn told the Associated Press.

Stranger Spends Hours Brilliantly Fixing a Destroyed Wedding Cake in Time for the Big Day

It might be a bride’s worst nightmare: on the eve of her wedding day, something goes wrong – like the carefully prepared hand-made wedding cake falling apart in the trunk of a car.

This is exactly what happened to Millie and Matt Maltby when they were on their way to their wedding venue in Brixham, England earlier this month.

The couple had driven to the Berry Head Hotel from Lincoln only to find that the beautiful 3-tiered cake that Millie had painstakingly prepared for the occasion had fallen to pieces in the trunk of the car.

“I had baked, secured, dowelled and decorated my own cake and we were quite cautious to drive carefully,” Millie wrote on Facebook. “However, when we arrived and opened the cake box it appeared that the hot weather caused the buttercream to melt and the cake just gave up.”

“I was a very calm bride and it didn’t seem to matter as I was marrying the man of my dreams and everything else seemed so insignificant. Matt, on the other hand, was heartbroken, he felt awful as I had taken so long to bake and decorate the cake and I had been taunting him about how yummy the cake was going to be.”

“I was sad to think that we wouldn’t have a cake – I’ve always been the crafty/baking type and I knew my family would be expecting to see something amazing. The hotel whisked away the cake and told me that they would figure something out for me. I pushed it to the back of my mind and tried to enjoy having all my family around me the night before my wedding day.”

RELATED4-Year-old Can’t Contain Emotions When He Hears Stepmom Give Special Message During Wedding Vows

As fate would have it, Clare Vaz of Patty’s Piece of Cake bakery was delivering cupcakes to the hotel at the same time that everyone was worrying over the damaged wedding cake.

Vaz then got to repairing the cake using the surviving segments of Millie’s original creation.

“With time against me, I just didn’t have time to bake cool and decorate a new middle tier, so thankfully, I had a dummy cake which I used to create the new middle tier,” Vaz wrote on Facebook. “The top tier (a delicious smelling lemon cake) thankfully I could save. So I stripped it back down, crumb-coated, and re-covered it in white.”

The next day, Vaz had the cake – which was an almost identical recreation of the original – back to the hotel in time for the wedding.

“I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting the bride and groom, I don’t even know their name other than Mille and Matt from the lovely cake topper,” says Vaz. “So Mrs. Mille and Mr. Matt… whilst cake plans sadly didn’t go in our favor, I am pleased to have hopefully saved the day with a cake that is not as perfect as your original, but will help make memories of your special day.”

“To take the time to do that for a stranger is just astounding, and something you just don’t see anymore,” says Millie. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to thank Clare enough.”

Be Humbled By the 9 Most Breathtaking Photos of Saturn’s Cassini Voyage

If you sometimes find yourself in the midst of everyday annoyances and frustrations from work, it can be helpful to take some time out your day for a humbling dose of ethereal wonder.

Which is why we compiled our ten favorite photos from the Cassini spacecraft’s 13-year voyage around Saturn.

The craft, which was launched in October 1997, took seven years to travel all the way to the ringed planet. It then transmitted priceless photos and information back to Earth with data that has been essential to space exploration and planetary studies.began its final mission around Saturn in April: the completion of 22 dives between the planet and its rings.

Cassini began its final mission around Saturn in April: the completion of 22 dives between the planet and its rings – an area never before explored.

CHECK OUT: Hubble Captures Giant Emoji in the Stars

Then, after it finished its final mission on September 15th, the spacecraft plunged into Saturn’s atmosphere and complete its breathtaking voyage in a blaze.

So, as evidence of its wondrous journey, here are the best photos from the Cassini spacecraft.

This 2,800-mile (4,000 kilometers) hurricane constantly spirals on Saturn’s north pole. Nobody knows why it is perpetually spinning year round, but this false-color image shows the details in its cloud range and motion.

This shadowy mosaic equinox is the first seasonal transition ever witnessed by Earth-dwellers, thanks to Cassini.

These three breathtaking mosaics were taken during flybys of Titan, a moon of Saturn that is covered in lakes of liquid methane. The photos tracked the changes on the planet’s surface between October 2005 and January 2006.

This photo was taken from the equatorial plane of Enceladus, one of Saturn’s many moons. It was snapped from the south pole 1 year after the moon’s autumnal equinox.

This is a rare view of five of Saturn’s moons in the same frame: Pandora, Janus, Enceladus, Rhea, and Mimas.

During its exploration of Enceladus, Saturn’s sixth-largest moon, Cassini captured this image of geysers spouting off of the moon’s surface. This has led researchers to believe that the moon may be harboring a sub-surface lake. If this is true, it could mean that Enceladus has all of the necessary ingredients for life.

This is a wider photo of the massive hurricane spinning at Saturn’s north pole.

Finally, this breathtaking photo shows the pale blue dot that is our home: Earth. Taken from roughly 900 million miles away (1.44 billion kilometers), it is yet another humbling reminder of our tiny place in the universe.

Extreme Couponing is How a Texas Mom Can Give Extreme Relief to Hurricane Victims

Kimberly Gager is not just a single mother of three children – she is also using her shopping addiction to help hurricane evacuees.

Gager has donated over $8,000 worth of toiletries and hygienic supplies to dozens of relief efforts and families. The 39-year-old says that she used her extreme couponing skills to whittle the prices down on deodorant, toothbrushes, shampoo, razors, baby wipes, diapers, and detergent to about $4,000.

Gager has reportedly been hoarding most of the supplies in her garage since October, but she has never had a real use for all of it. She would occasionally send boxes of supplies to universities and charities, but now, she is making supply deliveries to affected families in Texas and Florida from her home in San Antonio.

Young Boy Saves 5 Lives in Just 2 Days

Steffan Williams may only be 8 years old, but he has already saved half a dozen lives in his hometown.

The Welsh youngster, who enjoys spending his days paddling along the coast of New Quay, Ceredigion, first spotted three people in distress from his kayak near the end of August.

Williams navigated over to the stranded tourists – an elderly woman and two teenagers – only to discover that they had hunkered down on a rock after being trapped out at sea by the tide.

Williams then retrieved a dingy from the shore, returned to the tourists, and towed them back to safety. The trio was grateful for his help, and gave him a thank you tip of some cash.

Then, just two days later, the 8-year-old was kayaking along the coast once more when he saw two young men standing on a rock at sea, whistling for help and waving to get his attention.

Their phones had run out of battery power, and the two boys were cold, tired, hungry, and trapped on the rock without the ability to call for assistance.

This time, Williams alerted the coast guard, who used a rescue boat to pick up the boys from the rock.

The shoreline is notoriously dangerous for tourists who use the beach as a shortcut to get to nearby campsites. Many of these visitors then become trapped by the rising tide. If it had not been for Williams’s assistance, five people may have faced a much more treacherous fate.

“People often get caught out by the tides in New Quay as they try to go backwards and forwards from the town to the caravan sites,” Steffan told Wales Online. “I just helped when I could.”

Williams father Huw, who also works in the coast guard, said that he was extremely proud of his son’s heroism. Steffan plans on working alongside his father on the coast when he turns 17.

Over a Quarter Million Dollars Donated to Help Victims of Western Wildfires

The Western states of Oregon, Washington, Montana, and California have been hit hard by devastating wildfires. With all these outbreaks, personnel and resources in the region are spread thin, but across the U.S. and Canada people have come together to raise more than a quarter million dollars to support the tireless, brave fire crews.

In Washington state, a fire started by lightning on August 11th began burning the Norse Peak Wilderness, and with a wind change, now threatens the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort area and the watershed for the City of Tacoma. The fire is currently 0% contained and spread over 1098 acres. A fundraiser started by Tiana Anderson, a Crystal Mountain employee who grew up in the area has raised $66,000 for The Greenwater and Crystal Mountain Firefighters Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which makes all donations tax-deductible.

“Thanks for all you have done to battle these fires and save our homes – and something we have had in the family since 1972,” wrote Kevin and Sheila Ober, who donated $150 two days ago. “Thank you doesn’t seem enough. You will forever be heroes to our family.”

On September 2nd, a wildfire started along the Eagle Creek Trail of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon. Currently, the Eagle Creek (Gorge) Fire has spread to 45,579 acres after having jumped across the Columbia River into Washington state. As of today, there are over 1000 personnel from across the Pacific Northwest working around the clock on the fire, which is viewed as just 32% contained.

Caroline Park and David Lipps, owners of Thunder Island Brewing Co, and residents of nearby Cascade Locks, started a fundraiser that will send any money raised directly to departments sending the fire crews—some of which are volunteer-based from their home town. She surpassed her goal, raising 18,000, but wants to hit $20K. Their Brewing Co. has also been feeding the busy fire crews. Donate to her campaign here.

A hiking group called Pacific Northwest Outdoor Women has raised almost $41,000 among their members and friends for the nonprofit Washington and Oregon volunteer firefighters associations, which have been sending crews to the various fires burning across the region. Donate to Oregon, here; visit heir Washington campaign here.

Brian Renkema started a GoFundMe campaign to help people in Northwest Montana who lost property and homes in the Caribou Creek fire. Also initiated by a lightening strike, the fire is burning 24,206 acres and is 50% contained today. 310 firefighters are currently fighting on the blaze’s perimeter, 18 miles northwest of Eureka. Favorable weather conditions should benefit the effort in the coming week. Donors, including nearby Canadians, have given $13,000 to Brian’s fundraiser, here.

GoFundMe reported in a press release three days ago that $83,000 was raised in response to California wildfires, but they could not be reached to provide the campaign details.

Regardless of the disaster—flooding in the south, or fires in the west—average citizens have lined up to volunteer their time, and give from their wallets—small gestures that together make a big difference.

This Country’s Millennials are Least Likely to Drink and Drive Than Any Other Age Group

Driving safely is now cool – at least, according to this new report on Canadian millennials.

The study, which was commissioned by Beer Canada’s Partners for Safer Communities initiative, says that British Columbian citizens between 18 and 35 years old are the least likely to drink and drive.

82% of millennials above the legal drinking age have volunteered as a designated driver at least once in the last three years, compared to 67% of Canadians between the ages of 34 and 54, and just 55% of those above 55 years of age.

Additionally, millennials may catch a lot of flack for using social media, but the study also highlighted the fact that many Canadian youngsters had been using social media to plan sober transportation for a night out. They also expressed concern about having to face social media shame in the case of being caught drinking and driving.

Almost half of the participating millennials said that social media and transportation apps help keep them safe while they’re drinking, as opposed to 21% of generations X’ers and 18% of baby boomers. 55% of millennials said that they have used transportation apps to get home, in comparison to 29% of the middle age group, and 17% of the baby boomers.

“We found that nearly one in three (34 percent) Millennials, say they’re more likely to use social media when they’ve been drinking,” says, Sean Simpson, Ipsos Canada.

“Three in ten (29 percent) Millennials admit that social media makes them do things they regret when they’ve been drinking, which likely explains why many are staying clear of mixing the two.”

Dog Chained Up During Flood Gets Adopted By The Man Who Saved Her

The only thing that is now flooding around this poor Texan pup is tender love and care.

The dog was discovered by Sheriff Troy Nehls and a news crew from KPRC in Fort Bend County in heavy flooding last year. The dog was so overcome by the waters, only her head could be seen poking out above the surface.

When Nehls and the journalists approached the distressed animal, they realized that the dog was unable to swim away because it was tied to the porch.

Nehls and one of the journalists then plunged into the water, untied the dog’s leash, and hauled her into the rescue boat.

After taking the pup to the Humane Society where she was evaluated and deemed healthy, journalists reached out to the former owner of the dog who had skipped town for the hurricane. The man said that he did not believe the floodwaters would be high enough to harm the hound. He was allegedly unable to return to the home because of the flooding, but he was more than happy to relinquish ownership of the dog to the sheriff.

The Nehls family then agreed to adopt the dog and give her a loving forever home.

Additionally, they decided to name the dog Archer after the journalist who helped save her.

“There’s a bond this dog and I have now that will remain with us. She’s not tied up to a front porch,” Neels told the Dodo. “Now she’s in a home that is comfortable, she’s sleeping on a bed and she gets constant attention from the family.”

“I truly believe this dog has a new outlook on her life.”
