Watch Ellen Surprise Graduating Class with Free Scholarships

Ellen and Class-Instagram

In a chart-topping gesture of kindness and generosity, beloved talk show host Ellen Degeneres presented this graduating high school class of 41 students with free college scholarships.

Earlier this month, Ellen brought two educators, Natasha Campbell and Cheryl Swift, from the Summit Academy of Brooklyn, New York onto her show for an interview. The teachers explained that they have strived to send every one of their students to college. Though this may seem like a basic school mission, it’s more difficult in an area where 28% of children under 16 live in poverty and only 4% of the adults have been to college.

RELATED94-Year-old Graduates College Online with Bachelor’s and 4.0 GPA

So in solidarity with the school’s mission, Ellen teamed up with Walmart and presented the school with a $25,000 check to continue educating children living below the poverty line.

The generosity didn’t stop there, however – Ellen brought the entire class back onto the show a few weeks later and presented them with full four-year college scholarships.

If you want to see their reactions, be sure to grab a box of tissues first.

This App Helps the Blind to “See” When They Need it Most

Blind Man With Phone-Youtube

Most blind people have a fair amount of independence during their daily lives, but what about when they need to read a food label? Or find something by color?

That’s where Be My Eyes comes in.

Be My Eyes is a phone app that opens up a live video stream connected to one of 400,000 different sighted volunteers from around the world.

RELATEDTeen Creates ‘Sit With Us’ App For Bullied School Children

Blind users can use the eyes of the sighted person on the other end of the camera to guide them through the task accordingly. This way, non-sighted people can get help in real time with only their phone.

The creator, Hans Wiberg, even designed the app so that if a user requires help during the wee hours of the morning, the assistance request will be passed to someone in a different corresponding time zone so as to not awaken any volunteers.

Almost 30,000 blind users are using the service everyday, with over 127,000 successful interactions already recorded.

“It’s my hope that by helping each other as an online community, Be My Eyes will make a big difference in the everyday lives of blind people all over the world,” says Hans.

Deputy Writes Heartfelt Note to Teen Who ‘Stole’ His Bike to Get Home

Josh Bowden and Letter-Youtube

Most people would probably be pretty irked if they woke up to find that their bicycle had been stolen, but not Deputy Josh Bowden. That’s because he was given a special note that was left at the scene of the crime.

On Monday morning, Josh found a letter written by a 19-year-old girl in place of where his bike had been.

The note reads as follows:

“To whom this may concern, I want to sincerely apologize for taking your bike the night of the Super Bowl. I had to walk from Radford to Blacksburg at 2am because of drunk boys, a dead phone, and no money/rides in Radford. Regardless, I had every intent to return it to you. I saw the Sheriff car and hoped you would understand a 19-year-old girl’s rationale. It was still 16 miles but at least I had some safety with your bike. I’m genuinely sorry and hope you can forgive me for returning it so late and taking it without permission.”

It was signed only by the initial “M”.

Josh was so struck by the heartfelt note, that he took to social media to try and find M and tell her that he didn’t mind her borrowing his bike – he did, however, care about her safety in the future.

“I don’t know if you will ever see this, but I put it on Facebook in the hopes that maybe you would,” writes Bowden.

“I’m sure you have a family that loves you very much and people who value your existence. In the future please don’t put yourself in such a precarious position, but if you ever do, have a backup plan. Should that fail, please bypass my bicycle and come knock on my door.”

The response – along with a few personal tips from Bowden on future safety plans – has already been shared by thousands, while M – true to her word – eventually returned the bike in secret.

Brain Scans May Help Doctors Predict Adolescents Drug Use Before it Starts

drugs-cc-gatis-gribusts

There’s an idea out there of what a drug-addled teen is supposed to look like: impulsive, unconscientious, smart, perhaps – but not the most engaged. While personality traits like that could signal danger, not every adolescent who fits that description becomes a problem drug user. So how do you tell who’s who?

There’s no perfect answer, but researchers report that they’ve found a way to improve our predictions – using brain scans that can tell, in a manner of speaking, who’s bored by the promise of easy money, even when the kids themselves might not realize it.

That conclusion grew out of a collaboration between Brian Knutson, a professor of psychology at Stanford, and Christian Büchel, a professor of medicine at Universitätsklinikum Hamburg Eppendorf. With support from the Stanford Neurosciences Institute’s NeuroChoice program, the pair started sorting through an intriguing dataset covering, among other things, 144 European adolescents who scored high on a test of what’s called novelty seeking – roughly, the sorts of personality traits that might indicate a kid is at risk for drug or alcohol abuse.

RELATEDNew Drug Inspires Hope For Alzheimer’s Cure

Novelty seeking isn’t inherently bad, Knutson said. On a good day, the urge to take a risk on something new can drive innovation. On a bad day, however, it can lead people to drive recklessly, jump off cliffs and ingest whatever someone hands out at a party. And psychologists know that kids who score high on tests of novelty seeking are on average a bit more likely to abuse drugs. The question was, could there be a better test, one both more precise and more individualized, that could tell whether novelty seeking might turn into something more destructive.

Knutson and Büchel thought so, and they suspected that a brain-scanning test called the Monetary Incentive Delay Task, or MID, could be the answer. Knutson had developed the task early in his career as a way of targeting a part of the brain now known to play a role in mentally processing rewards like money or the high of a drug.

The task works like this. People lie down in an MRI brain scanner to play a simple video game for points, which they can eventually convert to money. More important than the details of the game, however, is this: At the start of each round, each player gets a cue about how many points he stands to win during the round. It’s at that point that players start to anticipate future rewards. For most people, that anticipation alone is enough to kick the brain’s reward centers into gear.

MOREFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

This plays out differently – and a little puzzlingly – in adolescents who use drugs. Kids’ brains in general respond less when anticipating rewards, compared with adults’ brains. But that effect is even more pronounced when those kids use drugs, which suggests one of two things: Either drugs suppress brain activity, or the suppressed brain activity somehow leads youths to take drugs.

If it’s the latter, then Knutson’s task could predict future drug use. But no one was sure, mainly because no one had measured brain activity in non-drug-using adolescents and compared it to eventual drug use.

No one, that is, except Büchel. As part of the IMAGEN consortium, he and colleagues in Europe had already collected data on around 1,000 14-year-olds as they went through Knutson’s MID task. They had also followed up with each of them two years later to find out if they’d become problem drug users – for example, if they smoked or drank on a daily basis or ever used harder drugs like heroin. Then, Knutson and Büchel focused their attention on 144 adolescents who hadn’t developed drug problems by age 14 but had scored in the top 25% on a test of novelty seeking.

CHECK OUT: Simple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

Analyzing that data, Knutson and Büchel found they could correctly predict whether youngsters would go on to abuse drugs about two-thirds of the time based on how their brains responded to anticipating rewards. This is a substantial improvement over behavioral and personality measures, which correctly distinguished future drug abusers from other novelty-seeking 14-year-olds about 55% of the time, only a little better than chance.

“This is just a first step toward something more useful,” Knutson said. “Ultimately the goal – and maybe this is pie in the sky – is to do clinical diagnosis on individual patients” in the hope that doctors could stop drug abuse before it starts, he said.

Knutson said the study first needs to be replicated, and he hopes to follow the kids to see how they do further down the line. Eventually, he said, he may be able not just to predict drug abuse, but also better understand it. “My hope is the signal isn’t just predictive, but also informative with respect to interventions.”

Girl Scout’s Hilariously Honest Cookie Reviews Lead to Record-breaking Sales

Charlotte McCourt-Youtube

Charlotte McCourt believes that honesty is the best policy – that’s why she wrote astonishingly blunt reviews of every Girl Scout cookie for her customers.

The 11-year-old gave the Do Si Do cookie a 5 out of 10 score because of its “bland, unoriginal flavor”. Her most scathing 1/10 review was for the Toffeetastic; saying that it was “a bleak, flavorless, gluten-free wasteland”.

Now one might think that being 100% honest about a product you’re trying to sell isn’t the best method of making money. But as it turns out, Charlotte broke a Girl Scout cookie selling record.

Charlotte had been aiming to use this full-disclosure policy to help her sell at least 300 boxes. However, because customers were so intrigued by the Girl Scout’s honesty, she managed to sell over 23,000 boxes.

Abused Pit Bull Goes From “Crack House” to Firehouse Dog

Ashley the Firehouse Pit Bull-Instagram

Ashley the pit bull went from struggling to survive in an alleged New York City “crack house”, to being the beloved mascot of the local fire department.

The founders of foster-based rescue No More Pain Rescue received a call in mid-January about a pup who had been abandoned with no food, water, or electricity. When they rescued the 1-year-old canine from the house, she was malnourished and had burns on some parts of her body.

After evacuating the pup from the dilapidated building, they called some of their friends at the Lower East Side FDNY station known as “Fort Pitt” and asked if they could look after the pit bull until they found her a proper home.

“Every person deserves to rest in peace”: Muslims Help Repair Vandalized Jewish Cemetery

Vandalized Headstones-Youtube

In a compassionate gesture of solidarity, these Missouri Muslims have raised thousands of dollars through an online crowdfunding website to repair the Jewish headstones that were recently vandalized.

Almost 200 Jewish graves at the Chesed Shel Emeth Society cemetery in St. Louis were knocked over or vandalized during President’s Day weekend. When activists Tarek El-Messidi and Linda Sarsour heard about the incident, they were shocked and heartbroken.

RELATEDMuslim-Owned Restaurant Offers Free Christmas Meal For Homeless and Elderly

So they created a fundraising campaign on Launch Good. Since it was started 24 hours ago, $88,000 has already been raised to repair the graves – over four times the original goal. That equals to about $1,000 raised every twenty minutes.

All the excess money raised through the campaign will go towards assisting other damaged Jewish properties and centers nationwide.

“Through this campaign, we hope to send a united message from the Jewish and Muslim communities that there is no place for this type of hate, desecration, and violence in America,” reads the fundraising page. “We pray that this restores a sense of security and peace to the Jewish-American community who has undoubtedly been shaken by this event.”

Mystery Woman Donates Rare Bill Worth $62K to Help Youth

£5 Note-Tony Huggins Haig Gallery

An unidentified woman from Northern Ireland accidentally found a five pound note that was actually worth a fortune. But the lucky anonymous woman didn’t keep it – she gave it to charity instead.

There are only four of these £5 bills in the world, and each one was distributed into circulation in a different UK country. The reason the currency is so unique is because they were engraved with a tiny portrait of Jane Austen etched by micro-artist Graham Scott. The bills in Wales and Scotland have already been discovered, leaving only the one hidden in England.

RELATEDSingle Mom Parlays Small Lottery Win into Fund For Homeless Man In the Cold

When the woman from County Donegal found it in County Fermanagh, she contacted the gallery that it originated from – The Tony Huggins-Haig Gallery in Kelso, Scotland – to announce that she had found the $62,000 prize. Once the bill was verified to contain the special portrait, the woman took a few weeks to “mull over” what she would do with it.

The gallery then received a letter with the special bill enclosed along with a note from the woman reading: “£5 note enclosed, I don’t need it at my time of life. Please use it to help young people.”

The currency will be auctioned off to help the Children In Need charity.

IKEA Releases Free Design For Garden Sphere That Feeds a Neighborhood

Garden Sphere-Released

This easily-constructed new IKEA product could feed dozens of people in your very own neighborhood – and the blueprints are available for download free of charge.

The Grow Room is an urban structure designed by architects Sine Lindholm and Mads-Ulrik Husumto in Space 10 – an IKEA idea lab based on coming up with innovative, groundbreaking solutions for the future. The designers hope that the Grow Room will encourage people to engage in growing their own food in sustainable, natural ways. Not to mention that the Grow Room brings the food of a farm to a city by taking up only a small fraction of the space.

All one needs to make a Grow Room is some plywood, screws, a hammer, and a trip to a local public fab lab. According to Space 10, such technologies as 3D printing and cutting are as accessible as printers.

“This mean most people — in theory — could produce almost anything themselves,” says the organization in a press release. “Just as printers are now ubiquitous; local and on-demand, customized production could become the norm of the future. We’re tapping into this emerging potential by releasing the cutting files for The Growroom.”

Cities like Helsinki, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, and Taipei are all reportedly gearing up to construct their own Grow Rooms.

Valentino the Cat-Leave No Paws Behind

Valentino was in sorry shape when he was admitted to a local animal shelter with a host of health problems in need of treatment. He was given the chance he needed to recover, however, thanks to Elaine Seamans.

Elaine, who works for a nonprofit that specializes in giving medical care to sick canines, was visiting the shelter in Los Angeles when she saw the scraggly cat in his cage.

Though she generally only keeps her eyes open for sick dogs, the sight of Valentino pulled on her heartstrings.

Elaine called the CEO of Leave No Paws Behind; a nonprofit organization that takes in terminally-ill or seriously injured animals for treatment, and asked for assistance with Valentino.

When the sweet feline was admitted to The Pet Doctors of Sherman Oaks, he was diagnosed with sarcoptic mange, low glucose levels, infections, dehydration, and gastrointestinal problems. Sarcoptic mange is a dangerously contagious condition that requires handlers and care givers to wear protective gear.

Dad Creates App to Help Daughter Communicate

Sadie and Robert-Youtube

Since Rob Laffan’s daughter Sadie has nonverbal autism, trying to communicate what she wanted or felt to her parents was terribly frustrating.

That’s why Rob created a revolutionary app called Tippy Talk to help her say what she wanted, felt, or needed.

The app starts by presenting Sadie with a photo of her mother and another photo of her father. Once she selects which one she would like to communicate with, she is presented with dozens of images that correspond with a feeling or question. After she selects the image, the statement is then translated into a worded text message that is sent to the parent’s phone.

RELATEDTeen Creates ‘Sit With Us’ App For Bullied School Children

The app may be similar to picture exchange communication boards that have already been used for years, but Tippy Talk allows Sadie to communicate with her parents whether they’re at work or out of the country – plus, it’s not as easy to ruin as the flimsier material of papers or books.

After creating Tippy Talk, Rob was elected College Entrepreneur of the Year 2015 and awarded $11,000 at the Enterprise Ireland Student Entrepreneur Awards two years ago. But the greatest reward of all is how Rob can now efficiently communicate with his daughter.

“Being able to understand my girl’s exact desire, needs, and feeling has brought me closer to really understanding and loving her little personality,” Rob told The Mighty. “Now it’s just a case of giving the same joy to other parents like me.”

Sharnique Dasant and Ashley Jordan Full-Facebook

Ashley Jordan and her husband Michael do all of their shopping at Walmart every two weeks – but they have apparently never encountered as compassionate a cashier as Sharnique Dasant.

The couple, who are the proud parents of three children, were loading up two shopping carts worth of groceries and baby clothes at a Walmart in Colombia, South Carolina. When it came time to pay, their bill had totaled up to $200.

When Sharnique finished ringing them up, she says she got a divine inkling that she should pay for half of the groceries.

“She said ‘I think y’all need a blessing tonight!’ And she waked around to the machine and swiped the card,” 27-year-old Ashley told PEOPLE. “She said ‘God told me to bless y’all!’ I said ‘Are you serious? Okay, thank you!’ ”

Ashley was so touched by the cashier’s gesture, that she took a photo with Sharnique and posted it on Facebook with a thank you.

“It was another dreaded shopping trip trying to buy groceries for a family of 5,” says Ashley. “We literally dread going to Walmart and buying groceries because my husband’s whole check goes to food for our family. I will say that I’m not a fan of shopping at Walmart because of how rude some of the people can be. But after tonight my whole perspective has changed.”

“I wanted her friends and family to know how genuine she is, because we need to see these good stories in the world today, and it’s good to know there’s people out there who will do a blessing like this,” says Ashley. “It has opened my heart. I plan on paying it forward in the future.”
