Firefighters Hang Christmas Lights For Injured Dad After He Fell From Ladder

men-putting-up-christmas-lights-youtube

Erik Gaines had not only broken several of his bones after falling off of a ladder hanging Christmas lights – he and his family had seriously fallen out of the Christmas spirit.

The firefighters who answered Erik’s 911 call, however, believed otherwise.

While Erik was being cared for in the hospital, Shawn Erwin and other firefighters of the Puyallup, Washington squad decided to finish the job and put up the rest of the Christmas lights for the Gaines family.

This Soup Kitchen Serves the Homeless Like Guests in a Restaurant

server-kansas-city-community-kitchen

This soup kitchen firmly believes that all their guests should be served their meals with a side of dignity, graciousness, and respect.

The Kansas City Community Kitchen in Missouri has been serving low-income families and the homeless community for over 30 years – but starting in February, the center hired volunteer waiters and hosts so they could serve the hungry like a restaurant.

Every weekday between 11AM and 2PM, the Community Kitchen continues revolutionizing the soup kitchen model to include more “dining with dignity”.

“This new service represents what we’re about now,” said ECS President/CEO Beau Heyen. “Our diners will not only get delicious, beautiful meals created by our amazing culinary team, but they will have the dignity of being able to choose what they want to eat.”

In addition to giving diners a choice of what to eat, menus are varied to incorporate various fresh foods and suggestions made by the diners themselves, although often made into healthier versions.

5 Unique Ways For the Whole Family to Give Back (You’ll Love These)

gift-giving-cc-asenat29

Each year, we are teased earlier and earlier of the impending holiday season. Then suddenly, time flies, and, as if by magic, we find ourselves right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of it all. Creating a signature family tradition of giving is not only fun, but it can be calming and deeply fulfilling.

To begin, you can choose a theme for your giving tradition. My theme this year, for example, is “prizes in different sizes.” Having a theme helps to ignite imagination. Carve out some family time to brainstorm ideas, or adopt one or more of the ideas below, and find a way to make it your own. By this time next year, you will be a pro.

Write a Reverse Christmas List. Everyone knows that it’s the season for list making, and for children, those lists usually include the gifts they wish to receive. This is fun, but try encouraging your kids to make a “reverse Christmas list” after they’ve penned a list of things they’d like to ask for. A reverse Christmas list will consist of a list of things they’d like to GIVE to others this holiday, whether the recipients are family, friends, or gifts for those less fortunate than them. If you have a theme to your giving tradition, creating the reverse list can be a lot of fun.

LOOKBachelor’s Christmas Lights Attract a Wife

This is also an opportunity for families to reflect on things that were on previous Christmas lists. Are those things still being used? Have they been outgrown? Were they played with a time or two before being forgotten? Make a list of those items. Ferret them out, and then pack them with care. Add a secret note about a special memory you may have had with that toy, gadget or once favorite wearable. Stow away the note with the item. These simple steps will help your family connect to giving on a deeper level because it conjures up a living, breathing recipient.

The Yard Un-Sale. Begin by choosing a date for your “un-sale.” You might want to recruit your neighbors or friends to participate. Collect several empty boxes, and mark each box with the name of a room in your home that you wish to de-clutter. Don’t forget to include the garage, attic or basement. Go through each room and pack anything you no longer wish to keep. Make sure that the item is in “givable” condition. On the day of your Yard “un-sale,” organize the items by category. If you live in an area frequented by people walking their dog, add a water station to encourage dog walkers to stop by. Enjoy the day meeting people. Watch as your customers smile when they realize that everything at your yard “un-sale” is FREE!

MOREWoman Donates Entire Toy Store to Kids in Homeless Shelters

Invent a Family Giving Advent. Populate twelve of your advent calendar slots as usual with simple treats or small gifts. Populate the other twelve with notes describing a single act of giving. For example: “Give 5 heartfelt compliments today.” Or “Give your turn to someone else today.” Or attach a $5 or $10 bill to a note asking that it be used to treat someone else. Once you have filled all twelve slots, tear an ordinary sheet of paper into twenty-four squares and mark them from 1-24. Fold and place the numbered paper into a bowl. Take turns with your family selecting numbers until you have gone through all of the folded paper. The numbers on the papers you draw correspond to dates on the Giving Advent calendar. Now, your family can experience getting and giving! If you choose a theme, you can decorate your advent calendar in that theme, or make the items in each slot adhere to your theme.

Adopt a volunteer. Millions of people volunteer for various organizations all year. During the holiday season, many of those volunteers are a bit more visible. You may see them outside stores ringing bells. Others will spend time delivering food to the elderly. Some will devote extended hours in hospitals, and others will be caring in animal shelters. This year, why not adopt a volunteer? In nearly every hospital, a group of volunteers provide support services or directional help. Create a holiday box filled with treats, magazines and other goodies to thank them for their time. Pop in on the local animal shelter with treats for volunteers as well as the animals in their care. Offer a hot beverage to volunteers working outside in the cold. Your kindness is sure to be appreciated by people accustomed to giving!

Random Acts of Kindness. This can be practiced any time of the year, but the holidays are a perfect time to get started. Encourage your children to look for opportunities to give back randomly and anonymously, and model these acts for them. It could be a simple gesture such as buying a coffee or a fast food meal for the person in line behind you. Often, people who witness this type of giving follow suit.

The holidays are filled with so many gifts. The gift of giving is one gift to truly cherish. It is the only gift that gives back a hundred fold; it is always the right fit. This year, make lasting memories with your family while paying it forward and watch as the real magic of the season unfolds before you.

Google Empire to be Powered by 100% Renewables Next Year

Google logo CC Carlos Luna

California-based tech company Google announced today that starting in 2017, all of their data centers and offices will be powered entirely by renewable energy.

Though it’s taken 5 years to work out the negotiations for the energy goal set in 2012, their offices of over 60,000 staff will go from using 40% clean energy to 100%. Executives say that they will primarily draw from wind farms and solar panels, but they have not yet ruled out investing in nuclear energy should it meet their safety and efficiency standards.

The tech company, which is also in charge of eight other business giants such as Youtube and Gmail, used over 5.7 terawatts last year – the same amount of energy reportedly consumed by the city of San Francisco. It’s currently estimated that larger corporations such as Google account for about 2% of America’s electricity consumption.

Representatives say that not only are they going green because it’s their environmental responsibility, but renewables are also more cost-effective. Not to mention investing in sustainable energy could help make it cheaper than fossil fuel in the future.

“We are convinced this is good for business, this is not about greenwashing. This is about locking in prices for us in the long term. Increasingly, renewable energy is the lowest cost option,” said Marc Oman, EU energy lead at Google. “Our founders are convinced climate change is a real, immediate threat, so we have to do our part.”

Scientists Are Turning Nuclear Waste into Super-Efficient Batteries

diamond-cc-jurvetson

New technology has been developed that uses nuclear waste to generate electricity in a nuclear-powered battery. A team of physicists and chemists from the University of Bristol have grown a man-made diamond that, when placed in a radioactive field, is able to generate a small electrical current. The development could solve some of the problems of nuclear waste, clean electricity generation and battery life.

This innovative method for radioactive energy was presented at the Cabot Institute’s sold-out annual lecture – ‘Ideas to change the world’- on Friday, 25 November.

Unlike the majority of electricity-generation technologies, which use energy to move a magnet through a coil of wire to generate a current, the man-made diamond is able to produce a charge simply by being placed in close proximity to a radioactive source.

MORETeenage Girl Turns Plastic Trash Into Million-Dollar Biofuel

Tom Scott, Professor in Materials in the University’s Interface Analysis Centre and a member of the Cabot Institute, said: “There are no moving parts involved, no emissions generated and no maintenance required, just direct electricity generation. By encapsulating radioactive material inside diamonds, we turn a long-term problem of nuclear waste into a nuclear-powered battery and a long-term supply of clean energy.”

The team have demonstrated a prototype ‘diamond battery’ using Nickel-63 as the radiation source. However, they are now working to significantly improve efficiency by utilizing carbon-14, a radioactive version of carbon, which is generated in graphite blocks used to moderate the reaction in nuclear power plants. Research by academics at Bristol has shown that the radioactive carbon-14 is concentrated at the surface of these blocks, making it possible to process it to remove the majority of the radioactive material. The extracted carbon-14 is then incorporated into a diamond to produce a nuclear-powered battery.

The UK currently holds almost 95,000 tonnes of graphite blocks and by extracting carbon-14 from them, their radioactivity decreases, reducing the cost and challenge of safely storing this nuclear waste.

CHECK OUTChina to Build Giant Solar Plant at Chernobyl

Dr Neil Fox from the School of Chemistry explained: “Carbon-14 was chosen as a source material because it emits a short-range radiation, which is quickly absorbed by any solid material. This would make it dangerous to ingest or touch with your naked skin, but safely held within diamond, no short-range radiation can escape. In fact, diamond is the hardest substance known to man, there is literally nothing we could use that could offer more protection.”

Despite their low-power, relative to current battery technologies, the life-time of these diamond batteries could revolutionize the powering of devices over long timescales. Using carbon-14 the battery would take 5,730 years to reach 50 per cent power, which is about as long as human civilization has existed.

RELATEDIndia Saves Its Tigers Instead of Mining For $330M in Diamonds

Professor Scott added: “We envision these batteries to be used in situations where it is not feasible to charge or replace conventional batteries. Obvious applications would be in low-power electrical devices where long life of the energy source is needed, such as pacemakers, satellites, high-altitude drones or even spacecraft.

“There are so many possible uses that we’re asking the public to come up with suggestions of how they would utilize this technology by using #diamondbattery.”

Robo-Spoon Allows Disabled People to Eat With More Control

liftware-spoon-youtube

For people with disabilities such as cerebral palsy, Huntington’s disease, or spinal chord injuries, simple tasks such as using silverware can be more difficult because of unsteady hands.

That’s why Liftware – a team of scientists dedicated to creating eating tools for people with special needs – created a robotic spoon that automatically corrects its level in accordance with the user’s hand position.

The Liftware Level, as its called, fastens around the user’s wrist with a flexible rubber strap. The handle contains motion sensors that balances out the level of the spoon so no matter how much someone’s wrist shakes, the food on the utensil is less likely to spill. The flatware attachments can be swapped out for forks or spoons, while the battery can last up to three meals before needing to be recharged.

The team’s other products, such as the Liftware Steady, has been shown to reduce up to 70% of hand tremors in Parkinson’s patients. The contraption senses what movement is deliberate as opposed to involuntary – it then activates two tiny motors inside the handle to counteract the shaking so patients can eat without spilling.

Nestlé Discovered How to Slash Sugar Content in Chocolate by 40% Without Changing Taste

nestle-public-domain

Nestlé recently announced a revolutionary discovery saying that its researchers have found a way to recreate sugar differently so that it uses 40% less sugar on chocolate without changing the taste.

According to the company’s scientists, the breakthrough occurred when the team adjusted the structure of sugar so that it dissolved more quickly. This fools the taste buds into tasting the same amount of sweetness with only a fraction of the unhealthy intake.

The company’s chief technology officer, Stefan Catsicas, described the work as “truly groundbreaking research”.

It is difficult to say how much sugar is in chocolate, as it varies from brand to brand and different types of chocolate. Milk chocolate, however, is roughly 50% sugar while white chocolate could be as much as 60%.

The company plans on patenting the findings and implementing the new sugar recipe in 2018.

Standing Rock Celebrates Victory After Army Corp Blocks Final Building Permit

sioux-native-youtube

The protestors at Standing Rock have been peacefully rallying against construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline for the last several months –at long last, the Army Corps of Engineers blocked a vital building permit for the pipeline.

The 1,172 mile Dakota Access Pipeline was set to run through Sioux tribe land, causing outrage amongst the natives over possible contamination of their water supply and the desecration of sacred lands. What started as a few dozen protestors eventually grew to a national movement of “water protectors” ushering in the new future of renewables.

After reviewing the environmental consequences and civil rights violations caused by the pipeline, the Army Corps agreed that they have “more work to do” and plan on investigating alternative plans for construction.

Simple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

mental-patients-room-jeff-bowen

A new study shows a sharp decline in suicides at Veterans Affairs inpatient mental health units from 2000 to 2015, thanks to the Mental Health Environment of Care Checklist.

The checklist, introduced into the VA in 2007 and used byvmore than 150 VA hospitals nationwide, guides staff in eliminating physical hazards at the mental health inpatient units which raise the risk of patient suicide or self-harm.

The researchers found a sustained reduction in inpatient suicides during the last seven years in the study period, with none occurring each of the last three years.

MOREFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

The checklist focuses on architectural and other physical-environment changes. Earlier analyses had shown that most attempted or completed suicides on inpatient units were linked to these hazards–for example, a hook or other anchor point that could be using for hanging.

Other potential hazards include non-shatterproof glass and non-tamper-resistant electrical outlets.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Vince Watts, says the research produced two main findings.

“First, it appears that the Mental Health Environment of Care Checklist has had a substantial and persistent reduction in inpatient suicide deaths,” he says. “Second, these findings suggest that architectural and environmental changes may result in more lasting effects in contrast to other improvement strategies for reducing suicides in hospital units.”

RELATEDThis Doctor Broke The Law To Engineer a Better Nursing Home, And the Death Rate Plummeted

Other strategies for preventing suicides in hospitals include training staff better, performing more frequent checks of patients, and implementing a non-punitive culture that rewards incident-reporting and supports its continued improvement.

Watts, a psychiatrist at the White River (Vermont) VA Medical Center, and the study’s other three researchers are with the VA National Center for Patient Safety, based in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The program was created in 1999 to lead formal patient-safety activities across the VA health system. One of its first actions was to institute a root cause analysis of adverse events such as inpatient suicide.

Root cause analysis, used widely in industry, is a systematic approach that helps organizations identify and address the underlying causes of problems, instead of just “putting out fires” when they occur.

CHECK OUT: Suicide Rates Plummet Among Members of Apache Tribe

In a review of the National Center for Patient Safety’s root cause analysis database, the researchers learned of 29 completed suicides in VA mental health units from 2000 to 2015 (24 before implementation of the checklist and five after). The rate of suicide in mental health units before the program kicked off was 4.2 per 100,000 admissions. It dropped to 0.74 suicides per 100,000 admissions – an 82% reduction.

Structural changes, according to Watts, reduce the burden on hospital staff to prevent suicides.

“The checklist and resulting environmental changes involve hardwiring of changes into the architecture of mental health units,” he says. “Thus, staff don’t have to remember to do something. The unit is just designed that way.”

MOREWhen a Preschool Opens Inside a Nursing Home All Heaven Breaks Loose

Another implication of the finding, Watts says, is that there may be other effective approaches that, like structural changes, create no added burden on staff. One such approach would be the increased use of automated technologies to help provide care for patients with mental illness.

“Our goal is to have no inpatient suicides in the VA,” he adds. “Our hope is that a continued focus on this approach will result in a continued reduction in suicide.”
