Cute 3-Legged Bear Splashes in His Pool to Beat the Heat

Mack may only have three legs, but that doesn’t stop him from having fun.

Mack was reportedly found wandering around Claremont, California with his leg partially amputated from a hunting trap. When rescuers determined that he had been orphaned, he was taken in for care and protection.

His new enclosure with the Performing Animal Wildlife Society (PAWS) has been specially made with his disability in mind.

Mack’s favorite part of his new home, however, is definitely the pool.

When temperatures in California got particularly scorching this week, PAWS posted a video of Mack’s summertime fun, much to the delight of the internet.

Around two and a half minutes into the clip, Mack gets especially rambunctious.

This Nurse Makes Superhero Capes For Intensive Care Babies

Babies in the neonatal intensive care unit may not look like stereotypical comic book superheroes, but they do to this nurse.

Stephanie Treherne of the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal is being hailed for going above and beyond the call of duty of her job by hand-stitching tiny superhero capes for the intensive care babies.

For the last nine months, she has made about 100 felt capes featuring the baby’s initial emblazoned on the front. Since Treherne generally prefers to leave them with the baby, rather than handing it to anyone directly, parents never get to thank her properly – until now.

That’s because one of the intensive care baby’s mothers, Michelle Cooper, was so overwhelmed with gratitude for the nurse’s gesture, she asked the hospital staff how she could go about meeting and thanking Treherne.

Cooper’s two-month-old son Benjamin was born prematurely and had to be supervised by medical staff until he was healthy. On one of Cooper’s visits to see her son in the hospital, Treherne’s cape was hanging from the IV pole with a note that read: “To our little Superhero, love Stephanie T.”

“We were very surprised that one of the nurses that we haven’t even worked with or seen or anything yet had left that,” Cooper told CTVNews.ca “Given the hormones and everything, I was very emotional and I just started bawling my eyes out when I saw that cape.”

Treherne says that she just “wanted to do something nice for the babies”.

Christian Church Destroyed by ISIS Rebuilt by Muslim Residents

This group of Muslim volunteers are being hailed for their compassionate gesture of solidarity towards an abused Mosul church earlier this week.

According to the Facebook group This Is Christian Iraq, young community Muslims volunteered to help rebuild the Monastery of Mar Georges in the Al Arabi neighborhood of Mosul, Iraq.

The church had been damaged during the two-year reign of ISIS jihadists. Since the city was only reclaimed after a siege in November, rebuilding has been slow.

The volunteers became inspired to help after they heard rumors that Christian families were still being attacked within the city.

So, able-bodied men and women stepped up to remind local Christians that “Mosul is yours as it’s ours” and “our differences are our strength”.

Community Buys a Drink for 999 First Responders in Manchester to Say Thanks

Thanks to the wonders of technology, people have been offering up the most common gesture of gratitude to paramedics, police officers, and hospital workers who have been working around the block following the Manchester Arena bombing last week.

A crowdfunding campaign started by Edmund Hall has raised over $16,500 to buy drinks for health care workers in the city.

Hall started the initiative by leaving roughly $100 behind the bar at the Turing Tap, a pub across the street from the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

“I listened to the awful news the morning after the bombing and thought I’d like to put a few quid behind the bar at a pub near the Manchester Royal Infirmary,” said Hall. “I know alcohol isn’t the answer to the stress and trauma that the emergency services have experienced today, but it seems a simple and easy way to say thank you.”

Within a day of starting the campaign, the page soared past its original goal of $1,200. And according to Richard Perrin, a manager at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, the tab has already been put to good use.

“Me, my colleagues from Children’s Theaters and the Pediatric Wards, and all the other staff from the Central Manchester hospitals who had a pint or two on Friday night because of your generosity would like to say a massive THANK YOU. It was very gratefully received,” said Perrin.

“As you say, alcohol is not the answer to dealing with stress, but being able to go out in a non-hospital space with colleagues who have worked their behinds off this week and not have to think if they can afford a round did really help.”

Hall responded to the compassion by commenting on the page saying: “I am speechless. We have raised ten thousand pounds to buy a drink for the wonderful men and women who are working so hard to help those affected by the terrible events in Manchester. Nothing we’ve done today will fix the damage, or lessen the pain of those directly affected, but emergency service and hospital workers should know that if we were there now, we would buy them a drink. Of course we would.”

Renewable Energy Now Employs Almost 10M People Worldwide

Renewable energy isn’t just good for the environment – it’s good for the worldwide workforce, too.

A new report published earlier this week by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says that the renewable energy sector now employs 9.8 million people worldwide. That figure is expected to reach 24 million by 2030.

“Falling costs and enabling policies have steadily driven up investment and employment in renewable energy worldwide since IRENA’s first annual assessment in 2012, when just over seven million people were working in the sector,” said IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin. “In the last four years, for instance, the number of jobs in the solar and wind sectors combined has more than doubled.

CHECK OUT: California Breaks Solar Record, Generates Enough Electricity for 6 Million Homes

According to the report, Asia accounts for 62% of the jobs, as China, Brazil, the United States, India, Japan, and Germany are the leading nations in renewable energy employment. Most of the installation and manufacturing jobs for solar photovoltaic products are centered in Thailand and Malaysia.

Solar power is shown to be the most lucrative sector, accounting for 3.1 million jobs, which is 12% more than 2015. In the United States alone, the solar market has increased 17 times faster than the overall economy.

“Renewables are directly supporting broader socio-economic objectives, with employment creation increasingly recognized as a central component of the global energy transition. As the scales continue to tip in favor of renewables, we expect that the number of people working in the renewables sector could reach 24 million by 2030, more than offsetting fossil-fuel job losses and becoming a major economic driver around the world,” said Mr. Amin.

Stunning Sidewalk Chalk Festival is Funding Arts in the Schools

The 31st annual Italian Street Painting Festival was held this weekend at the grounds of the historic Mission in Santa Barbara, California—and these gorgeous creations may inspire you to go chalk your own sidewalk.

Inspired by its sister festival in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy, the Santa Barbara event known as ‘I Madonnari’ was the first festival of its kind in North America. Using colorful pastels on pavement, artists and young people create 150 large-scale street paintings—and all proceeds from the event benefit arts education, workshops, and performances in the local public schools.

25,000 spectators over the Memorial Day holiday weekend will visit, marvel at the paintings, stroll the Italian Market with its array of Italian cuisine, buy souvenirs of the event, and enjoy live music.

The festival benefits the Children’s Creative Project, a nonprofit arts education program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office. The Project serves 50,000 children in more than 100 schools with visual and performing arts workshops and performances throughout the region.

Businesses and citizens sponsor the squares of pavement, as large as 12-by-12 feet, to advertise their business or celebrate a friend or family member, or nonprofit you support.

The festival will even provide an artist to anyone sponsoring a square, and provides all painters with an endless supply of pastels for their work over the three days.

Street painters are called ‘I Madonnari’ in Italy because they historically recreated images of the Madonna. The Italian Madonnari have been traced to the sixteenth century, when itinerant artists were brought into the cities to work on the huge cathedrals.

MOREArtists Fusing Nature, Trees, and Weeds, Into Their Dazzling Street Art (LOOK)

When the work was completed, they needed to find another way to make a living, and thus often would recreate the paintings from the church onto the pavement.

They traveled to join festivals in towns across the country to make a living from observers who would throw coins if they approved of the artist’s work.

For centuries, many Madonnari were folk artists, reproducing simple images with crude materials such as tiles, coal, and chalk. Others, such as El Greco, would go on to become household names.

The origins of modern street painting can be traced to Britain. Pavement artists were found all over the United Kingdom and by 1890 it was estimated that more than 500 artists were making a full-time living from pavement art in London alone.

There is one day left in the Santa Barbara festival (with hours from 10-6, ending May 29). Some artists are using the last day to put the finishing touches on their masterpieces.

This Woman is Singlehandedly Buying Houses For Her City’s Homeless

This woman isn’t waiting for someone else to address her city’s homelessness problem.

Instead of investing in a second house for her and her family, Jessica Pearce of Melbourne, Victoria recently bought four houses for the homeless.

The houses, which she says she only bought a few days apart from each other, are apparently an easy bargain since they’re located in the cheaper areas of the city, rather than the expensive, according to ABC Radio Melbourne.

Pearce is currently in discussion over the legal management of the buildings, which will be located in Moe, Lara, Morwell, and Coria. All four will provide either shorter-term transitional housing, or more long-term accommodation for families seeking permanent homes.

The businesswoman reportedly first became inspired to help people living in poverty when she and her romantic partner accidentally stumbled upon a Melbourne street that was flooded with sleeping bags and mattresses of homeless people. The couple attempted to satiate their philanthropic inclinations by handing out $20 and $50 bills, but it still wasn’t enough.

They then took in a down-on-his-luck homeless father who couldn’t afford housing back to a hotel that they were staying at until they were able to buy him one month of motel accommodation.

Finally, they decided to give back in the biggest way that they could: buying the four properties.

And Pearce says it is all because of that street in Melbourne.

“I guess we felt shocked and I suppose a bit guilty — we didn’t realize how bad the housing situation in Melbourne was,” Pearce told ABC Radio Melbourne. “I guess it just touched me and I thought that maybe there was something that we could do.”

Good Samaritan Buys Plane Ticket For Soldier Trying to See His Family on Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend isn’t all just about barbecues and beach parties – it’s also about honoring service members who have fought for the values of our country.

That’s why Josh Rainey didn’t mind spending a couple hundred bucks on a young service member trying to get home to see his family.

Keaton Tilson, after being stationed in Fort Hood, Texas, was given permission at the very last minute to fly home to Granite City, Illinois and see his family for Memorial Day weekend. But after spending two days at the airport attempting to wait for a seat on standby, the Army mechanic was starting to lose hope.

When Josh overheard his story at the airport, however, he offered to give his ticket to Keaton. The airport staff explained that their policy prevented people from exchanging tickets, but Josh didn’t give up. He then called his wife, who agreed that they should buy a ticket for the young man themselves.

The ticket, which cost $341, was a small price to pay for the heartfelt hug, the memory of which will last Josh a lifetime.

“He walked away and came back and asked if he could hug me, and I think we both had to fight back the tears after that,” Rainey told KTVI.  “It was pennies, pennies on the dollar compared to what I got back from that hug.”

Memorial Day: How to Celebrate the Right Way–With Gratitude

Today on Memorial Day, Americans are supposed to honor the soldiers who died to protect the nation’s freedom and safety. The men and women who chose to serve their country give so much— and this weekend we have an opportunity to do something for them and their families.

We can reflect on what Memorial Day means and discuss the meaning with our children, family, and friends.

The federal holiday started as an event to honor Union soldiers who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women who died in any war or military action.

RELATED3-Legged Dog Awarded Highest Military Honor For Bravery

We can observe the National Moment of Remembrance, established by Congress, which asks Americans, at 3 p.m., local time, to pause in silence for 1 minute in an act of national unity. 3 p.m. was chosen because it is when most Americans are enjoying their freedoms on the national holiday, which always falls on the last Monday in May.  All Major League Baseball games halt, NASCAR race tracks go silent, Amtrak train whistles sound across the country, and hundreds of other nationwide participants remind Americans to pause.

POPULARWomen Who Escaped ISIS Create Trained Battalion to Fight Back, Rescue Others

Another way to honor the fallen is to volunteer or donate money to support organizations that help family members of fallen soldiers. Just imagine the impact and the message of “thanks” if we each donated $20, or wrote a personalized card to a nonprofit that supports military families. An easy and meaningful way we can all say, “Thanks.”

One nonprofit lets you get involved by writing cards to grieving families.

Soldiers’ Angels Living Legends Team sends personalized sympathy cards when a soldier dies and each year on the anniversary of that death to ensure families that their loved ones are never forgotten. You can write letters or donate to the cause.

This robber must be barking mad to think he can walk out of a store without paying for a loaf of Wonder Bread – but then again, he didn’t have a wallet… or hands, for that matter.

Though an employee was able to seize the product before the dog made a dash for the exit, she later returned for the product with an accomplice: another husky.

House Votes to End Jail Time for Those Too Poor to Pay Fines in Texas

Texas legislators in the House have just voted in favor of allowing poorer residents to pay off traffic tickets in methods other than money.

Low-income Texans are often punished for not paying their traffic tickets on time, resulting in more fines and punishments that usually only push them further into debt. Sometimes, these mounting fines and punishment result in jail time.

Now, however, state judges can ask defendants being tried for overdue fines about whether they have the funds to pay off such fees. If the individual seems reasonable in their defense, then the judge can either offer an alternative exchange – like community service – or they can reduce or waive the fee altogether.

RELATEDPope Opens Free Laundromat for Rome’s Poor

This bill still needs to be approved by the Senate before being passed to Gov. Greg Abbot. If it passes, however, the legislation would likely prevent thousands of Texans from being imprisoned over simple fines, while also saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

“They’re not getting off scot-free. We’re getting something for something,” said the bill’s House sponsor, Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, according to the Texas Tribune. “We are filling our jails up with people who should not be there.”

This Small Town in Canada Spent 10 Years and $2.7 Million to Save Turtles

The salvation of these tiny baby turtles may have come with a $2.7 million price tag and ten years of hard work, but the town responsible for the project knows it was all worth it.

Ever since the Long Point Causeway in southern Ontario was constructed a little over a century ago, it is estimated that thousands of turtles and endangered reptiles have been killed by oncoming cars traveling to see the beautiful beaches of the Long Point Peninsula.

And in 2006, one Long Point resident decided to do something about it.

Rick Levick, along with some other empowered locals, started campaigning for culverts to be installed underneath the dangerous 2-mile road. Culverts are tiny tunnels that allow critters to cross from one side of the road to the other without being in harm’s way.

POPULARBaby Tortoises Survive on Galapagos Island for First Time in 100 Years

Though $2.7 million seems like a hefty price, the determined residents sought funding from numerous wildlife agencies and organizations. One local author published a children’s book, to help cover some of the costs.

Then, in 2008, the town started construction of the culverts – the last of which was built in January.

Researchers are excited to announce that since the 12 culverts were created, turtle and snake deaths have fallen by 80%.

“We did have some opposition,” Levick told VICE Motherboard. “It was people very skeptical that we could do anything that said: ‘Well we’ve been running over turtles for years, and they’re still here, so why bother?’ Of course, that’s probably what they said just before the buffalo disappeared.”

Famed LEGO Giraffe to be Named After Giraffe-loving Boy Who Died

The giant toy brick giraffe standing tall at Legoland is going to be given the most beautiful namesake.

The beloved Legoland Discovery Center giraffe in Boston, Massachusetts is to be named after Gio Maggiore – a 6-year-old boy who adored the long-legged animals before he passed away.

The youngster died of congenital heart disease in April – but before he did, Gio spent all of his time watching the live stream of a pregnant giraffe at the New York zoo. His parents attempted to have the newborn calf named after him, but zookeepers decided on Tajili instead.

A friend of the family then reached out to Legoland asking for their own plastic giraffe to adopt the boy’s name. Sure enough, the center honored the request and said they would officially rename their 22,000 brick giraffe after the Maggiore’s late son.

As of May 31st, Tessie the 20-foot-tall sculpture will be known as Gio — the perfect name for a giraffe.

Pit Bull on the Verge of Euthanization Given 2nd Chance by Police

Apollo the pit bull may be a big ol’ sweetheart, but it took a long time for anyone to recognize it.

For six months, the pup languished in an animal shelter without ever finding a forever home. Deemed “too energetic” to be adopted, he was eventually handed the death sentence.

One desperate shelter worker wasn’t about to let an innocent dog be euthanized – so she called a Washington State narcotics K-9 trainer and asked if Apollo could be assessed as a drug sniffing dog.

RELATEDAbused Pit Bull Goes From “Crack House” to Firehouse Dog

An officer came by the shelter and ran some drills with Apollo. As it turns out, the pit bull was exceptionally talented. The officer then took charge of Apollo and brought him to one of the kennels at the Department of Corrections

The pup continued to be left in the kennel for 12 more months, as police officers usually prefer German shepherds as drug dogs. Since pit bulls are generally given a bad rep, no one wanted Apollo.

That is, until the Tukwila Police Department of Washington found themselves in need of a reliable canine.

“We contacted the trainer last summer while searching for a K-9 and she told us about Apollo,” wrote a Tukwila police officer. “She stated that he was a high drive dog and he would finish first in narcotics school if someone would give him a chance. All he needed was a chance.”

The trainer was right – Apollo graduated from the narcotics training with flying colors. Now, he’s the beloved mascot of the Tukwila law enforcement team.

“He is extremely friendly and can often be found trying to get us to play with him. He has brought great joy to all of us at the department in addition to being a very productive and hard worker. He is now a part of his handlers personal family and the family of the Tukwila Police Department.”
