How to Get Back to a Normal Sleep Schedule for Back-to-School Parents and Kids

After a summer of late nights hanging out with friends, and laid back mornings doing whatever you want, it’s time to get back on a school schedule.

In today’s society, we place a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the perfect parent and to be ready when school starts. This might include scrolling through Pinterest to find the newest and cutest ways to pack a lunch for little Tommy—and we can’t forget the fall clothing and school supplies. How many glue sticks and tissues again?

Yet, we never think of sleep. Why is that? Without healthy sleep, there is no health. That is the foundation, the building block, for everything else.

With constant opportunities to be visually entertained for 24 hours a day, it’s no wonder that, as bedtime approaches, so many of us have trouble shutting off our brains. Creating a relaxing environment, with dim lights and an ambient sound will assist the body to naturally want to sleep.

There are 2 simple actionable steps you can implement tonight to make morning wake-ups for school easier and bedtime a breeze. The first step is to use technology properly.

I know, I know – you’re thinking, “Wait, technology is bad for sleep. It says so in all the papers and Google findings.” Yes, you are correct. Technology that emits blue light is known to suppress your melatonin levels (sleep hormone) drastically. But you can use tech to your advantage when using it properly.

There are some apps on the market which contain meditations, sleep stories, and simple, calming sounds for the bedtime routine. I use the sleep stories and meditations from an app called “Calm” and for my kids, they love the app “Moshi Twilight”. When toddlers and kids try to stall bedtime, and you’ve already read your own stories, try turning on the app or some lullaby music, placing the screen facing down and by the door (keeping it away from the child’s eyesight). It’s a great way to have the body begin to unwind in the dark.

RELATEDTrouble Sleeping? The ‘Dullest Movie Ever Made’ was Filmed to be a Perfect Cure For Insomnia

The second step is to re-adjust bedtime gradually. You can begin 1-2 weeks prior to when school starts adjusting bedtime approximately 15 minutes earlier every 1-2 days. This means that if bedtime currently is 9:00PM, start with a 8:45PM goal of sleeping, and in 1-2 days, increase by another 15 minutes. And so on.

Now if school has started already or you don’t have 1 to 2 weeks to prepare, no
worries. Implement an early bedtime for 1-2 weeks until you start to notice that morning wake ups are easier (less crankiness) and bedtime is becoming more or a breeze.

Woman Stunned to Find Out That ‘Anonymous’ Kidney Donor is Actually Her Best Friend

Doncella Liggins and Beverly Burch have been best friends since they were sorority sisters in college decades ago – and over the course of the last year, they both have been hanging on to secrets that would soon leave each other stunned.

For months, Liggins had refrained from telling her best friend that she had kidney disease. After spending some time on the transplant list, she finally confessed to Burch.

The two women waited with baited breath, hoping for a match to come through until they eventually received a call from Saint Luke’s saying that they had found an anonymous donor.

“I said ‘WHAT?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, there’s a match.’ And I said, ‘Who?’” Liggins told KMBC. “He said, ‘Well, I can’t tell you. The only thing I can tell you is that they’re young and healthy.’”

The sorority sisters were delighted – except Burch knew something that Liggins did not.

Months passed until it was finally the day before the surgery, and Burch presented her friend with a card saying that she was the anonymous donor.

She had been keeping her identity a secret from Liggins for months out of fear that she would “jinx” the surgery.

“At that moment I realized who it was,” said Liggins. “And I went, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s you! It’s you!’”

Since the two women both live in the small town of Butler, Missouri, Burch says that she is pleasantly surprised that their community was able to keep her identity a secret. Fortunately, the surgery went off without a hitch and they are both recovering from the operation.

They hope that their story will inspire others to donate their organs as well.

“I would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat,” said Burch. “But I really need my other kidney.”

How Your Deep Conviction and Unique Truth Can Eventually Set Millions of People Free

The Lesson: Being a woman has been a challenge throughout history. The inequalities between genders compelled many women step into their own power and fight for their own rights – but in the words of Gloria Steinem, the leader of the American feminist movement, we are all unique and we all deserve to express what we are and to experience who we are without any boundary or limitation. We are not separate from each other; we are interconnected and each of us represents an important piece of the big puzzle called Life.

Notable Excerpt: “What the road does is to force you to live in the present. There is just an infinite amount of learning and it’s in the moment, it forces you to live in the moment. Religion is politics in the sky. […] Spirituality is in everything in all living things. We assume that the masculine controls the feminine, and of course, there is no masculine or feminine – there is human, but we set a pattern that says it’s okay for one group to control another.

“If we start ranking each other in the family, we think it is natural, we think it is cultural, we think that there is no other way and there is another way. The old languages, most of the ones I know, do not even have gender pronouns, they do not have he or she, they don’t have a concept of race, they don’t have a word for nature, because we are not separate from nature, it is all one. The power of the government needs to stop at our skins, male or female. You know there is a boundary here.”

The Guest: Gloria Steinem is an American feminist, speaker, activist and writer who recently published a New York Times best-selling memoir entitled “My Life on the Road”. She became nationally recognized as a leader and a spokeswoman for the American feminist movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. She co-founded New York Magazine and Ms. Magazine, where she remains a consulting editor. Steinem travels internationally as an organizer and lecturer, and she is a media spokeswoman on issues of equality.

The Host: Oprah Winfrey is an American talk show host, actress, producer, author, philanthropist, and media tycoon. In addition to being the richest African-American person in history, she also hosted the highest-rated television show of its kind and has been called the most influential woman in the world.

Starbucks to Pay Employees to Spend Half of Work Hours Volunteering for Charities

Starbucks is launching a test program that will allow their full-time employees to split their work hours between the café and “volunteering” for local nonprofits.

The company hopes that by allowing their employees to spend their time helping the community, it will keep their workforce happier and reduce turnover.

36 workers have been selected for the program across 13 different cities. The employees will spend 20 weekly hours working at their Starbucks outlet while spending the other 20 hours at a charity. Additionally, the employees will still be receiving all of their full-time benefits despite only spending half of their time at the restaurant.

The employees are working with charities that range across dozens of initiatives, including helping the environment, feeding the hungry, aiding the homeless, supporting refugees, and facilitating disaster relief.

The program, which is being called the Service Fellows pilot, is being facilitated through Points of Light, a nonprofit volunteering group. The 6-month pilot program will collectively provide 17,000 hours of community service across America.

“Starbucks partners have a passion for service both in and out of their stores. The program powers that passion through philanthropy and partnerships to have the greatest impact,” said Virginia Tenpenny, vice president of global social impact at Starbucks and executive director of The Starbucks Foundation.

“Our Service Fellows pilot is an innovative model that combines work, service, and partnerships, a model that will inform how we catalyze our partners and grantees to create enduring change in our communities,” she added.

Points of Light will be paying the Service Fellows through a grant that is provided by the Starbucks Foundation. If the program is found to be successful, Starbucks may be recruiting more workers for the initiative in fall 2019.

Teacher Goes Above and Beyond to Help Teen Mom Years After Having Her in Class

It has been three years since LaShonda Carter had Larresha Plummer in her class – but that didn’t stop her from answering her student’s request for help last week.

One night when Carter was having trouble sleeping, she started checking her social media pages at about 3AM. As she was browsing the internet, however, she received a message from 18-year-old Plummer.

Plummer explained how she was going through some tough times. She had just given birth to a baby and even though she was trying to go to a job fair the very next morning, she knew that it would be unhealthy for the baby to be on public transit. Thus, she had no idea how to the fair.

Carter immediately offered to pick up the young mother and drive her to the job fair the next morning.

RELATEDWhen Strangers on a Plane Hear Teacher Talk About Her Students, Everyone Opens Their Wallets

Hours later, Carter took Plummer to the fair and proceeded to sit in the car with the weeks-old infant while her ex-student applied for jobs.

Carter first met Plummer when she was teaching at Harper High School in Chicago, Illinois. The two shared a fond friendship, and even after Carter started teaching at another school, they remained in contact through social media for the following years.

Carter, who says that she will always be there for her students, then posted a Facebook Live video from her car asking for her community members to lend a hand by donating clothes, supplies, and food for the baby.

“Sometimes as a teacher, our jobs go beyond the classroom… she’s a young teenage mom, and she needs some help,” said Carter. “I’m gonna do what I can, as much as I can as an educator, but know I can’t do it all by myself.”

There has not yet been an update on how many donations have been made to aid Plummer’s role as a parent, but Carter’s Facebook Live video has already garnered thousands of views and comments offering assistance.

Additionally, Carter told CNN that the young mother has now found a job and will soon be attending college.

Muslims in Town Adopt a Sacred Hindu Tenet So They Won’t Hurt the Feelings of Their Religious Neighbors

Some people might think that it’s difficult for two separate faiths to coexist peacefully – but this Pakistani province has used food to go above and beyond the concept of respecting their neighbors.

Food is one of the best ways of bringing people together, but in this case, it’s rather the act of NOT eating which keeps the Hindu majority and the Muslim minority in the East-Pakistan province in such a peaceful state.

Cows are sacred to Hindus, and after generations of living together, their Muslim neighbors have stopped eating cows as a means of respecting their Hindu community members.

Despite cows being much less expensive to buy, the Muslims of the Tharparkar district spend their holiday of Eid al-Adha eating goats instead of cows so they won’t hurt Hindu feelings.

LOOKMuslims Take Out Full-Page Newspaper Ad to Denounce Anti-Semitism Against “Our Jewish Sisters and Brothers”

The gesture is not based on necessity, either – unlike the neighboring country of India, there is no law that prevents people from eating cow meat.

“I have a social obligation to take care of the sentiments of my Hindu friends,” a resident told Arab News.

This mutual respect has been the catalyst for a very harmonious state of affairs for the mixed-faith community. They attend each other’s weddings, religious festivals, rain ceremonies, and actively work to make life between faiths as pleasant as possible, which has resulted in a reported crime rate of almost 0%.

Ghansham Das, the 60-year old former chairman of a local city union council, told Arab News: “In our area, people of two different faiths live together, but this is a blessing for us, not a curse, unlike what we see in many places around the world … We are not only an example for the rest of our country but for the entire world.”

“We are faced with drought, and have the lowest human development index but we are rich in terms of love, respect, and brotherhood,” added another resident.

Couple Has Taken 11,000 Dogs into Their Own Home So the Pups Won’t Be Euthanized

Life in the dog house may not be too bad, according to this couple.

As a means of saving dogs from being euthanized at regular animal shelters, Ron Danta and Danny Robertshaw welcome dogs into their own home until they can be adopted.

They aren’t just taking in one or two strays, however – the couple recently told CBS News that they currently share their home with 86 different dogs.

The couple from Rembert, South Carolina first opened their arms to rescue dogs after they began taking in animals that were lost after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. As they continued taking in more and more pups, they turned their home into a sort of animal shelter called Danny and Ron’s Rescue.

The voices of God and Denzel Washington helped to prevent a man from jumping to his death—and the cold beer didn’t hurt, either.

Earlier this month, two beer deliverymen felt an unexplainable urge to take a completely different route to one of their stops. The unusual route took Jason Gabel and Kwame Anderson across a bridge where they noticed a man on the other side of the safety fence.

They stopped the truck and when Kwame asked the guy if he was alright, he admitted that he was planning to take his own life.

After Gabel called 911, the dispatcher said to do nothing—and wait until police arrived. But Kwame took matters into his own hands.

He told KMSP News how he then channeled his inner Denzel Washington. He remembered the hostage negotiator in the film Inside Man, and thought, “I gotta keep this guy entertained somehow, because if I wait for police, this thing may be over…”

Kwame then spent the next hour talking to the suicidal man and asking about his life, while officers on the scene watched. He learned the man lived around the corner from the bridge, he was from Chicago, and he had children.

MORESuicide Rates at Japanese Train Stations Have Plummeted by 84% Thanks to Simple Solution

He eventually asked the guy if he wanted to get food with him. He replied that he wasn’t hungry. He asked if he needed money—the man said no.

Then, Anderson asked if he would like to drink a beer with him and the man paused. “Maybe.”

Anderson ran and grabbed a 12-pack of Coors from the back of the delivery truck and cracked one open, promising that if the guy came back over the fence, the beers were all his.

The man agreed and slowly walked back from the ledge. He was later brought in an ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

Kwame and his partner say it was God that prompted them to take a different route that morning, but there’s nothing quite like sharing a cold beer with Denzel that will ultimately win the day.

Opioid Crisis Breakthrough: Non-Addictive Painkiller Found Effective

These scientists have been working to find a safe, non-addictive pain killer to help fight the current opioid crisis in this country – and they may have done just that.

Known as AT-121, the new chemical compound has dual therapeutic action that suppressed the addictive effects of opioids and produced morphine-like analgesic effects in non-human primates.

“In our study, we found AT-121 to be safe and non-addictive, as well as an effective pain medication,” said Mei-Chuan Ko, professor of physiology and pharmacology at the School of Medicine.

“In addition, this compound also was effective at blocking abuse potential of prescription opioids, much like buprenorphine does for heroin, so we hope it could be used to treat pain and opioid abuse.”

RELATEDFDA Approves First Ever Drug Designed Exclusively to Prevent Migraines

The research, which was conducted by scientists at Wake Forest School of Medicine with the support of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The main objective of this study was to design and test a chemical compound that would work on both the mu opioid receptor, the main component in the most effective prescription pain killers, and the nociceptin receptor, which opposes or blocks the abuse and dependence-related side effects of mu-targeted opioids. Current opioid pain drugs, such as fentanyl and oxycodone, work only on the mu opioid receptor, which also produces unwanted side effects – respiratory depression, abuse potential, increased sensitivity to pain and physical dependence.

“We developed AT-121 that combines both activities in an appropriate balance in one single molecule, which we think is a better pharmaceutical strategy than to have two drugs to be used in combination,” Ko said.

MOREA Woman Given Months to Live From Advanced Breast Cancer is ‘Cured’ in World First

In the study, the researchers observed that AT-121 showed the same level of pain relief as an opioid, but at a 100-times lower dose than morphine. At that dose, it also blunted the addictive effects of oxycodone, a commonly abused prescription drug.

The bifunctional profile of AT-121 not only gave effective pain relief without abuse potential, it also lacked other opioid side-effects that patients typically struggle with, such as itch, respiratory depression, tolerance and dependence.

Sponsor Suggestion: Try the 15 Best Belgian Beers

“Our data shows that targeting the nociceptin opioid receptor not only dialed down the addictive and other side-effects, it provided effective pain relief,” Ko said. “The fact that this data was in nonhuman primates, a closely related species to humans, was also significant because it showed that compounds, such as AT-121, have the translational potential to be a viable opioid alternative or replacement for prescription opioids.”

Next steps include conducting additional preclinical studies to collect more safety data, and then if all goes well, applying to the Food and Drug Administration for approval to begin clinical trials in people, Ko said.

Put These 5 Plants In Your Bedroom Window for a Better Night’s Sleep

Few things can cause us to experience as much frustration, anger, and stress as not being able to get a good night’s sleep.

Institutions like The Center for Disease Control and the American Sleep Association have reported that 1 in 3 Americans are getting poor sleep, and 1 in 5 Americans has suffered from a sleep disorder.

Thankfully, an unlikely ally in the battle against sleep deprivation may be found in several commonly-found leafy specimens with which we share the Earth. NASA has been conducting studies involving plants and sleep since 1989, and they have certified multiple species as being helpful for sleep and air quality.

There are a number of proven ways in which plants can help us to get a good night’s sleep, such as the minor relaxation our brains experience simply by observing the color green.

RELATEDDrinking Baking Soda Could Be Cheap, Safe Way to Combat Autoimmune Disease, Says Scientists

Another situation which could prompt sleep loss is polluted air; airborne-pollutant levels are commonly up to 5 times higher in people’s homes than outdoors; however, there are many plant species which can absorb these floating sleep disrupters.

“Since man’s existence on Earth depends upon a life support system involving an intricate relationship with plants and their associated microorganisms, it should be obvious that when he attempts to isolate himself in tightly sealed buildings away from this ecological system, problems will arise,” writes the NASA researchers.

MOREMost People Don’t Get Enough Vitamin D, But This App Can Fix That

“Even without the existence of hundreds of synthetic organic chemicals off-gassing into tightly sealed environments, man’s own waste products would cause indoor air pollution problems.”

So if you are looking for a way towards better sleep, try sticking one of these four plants in your bedroom window.

Lavender – Always reliable and heavily studied, this well-dispersed plant can lower your blood pressure and heart rate, both of which are key markers of stress and anxiety. The plant has even been shown to reduce crying and stress in infants.

Jasmine – With its beautiful white blossoms it would seem a no-brainer to add Jasmine to your household, especially when it is proven to increase restful sleep, decrease anxiety, and even lead to a heightened mental performance.

Aloe Vera – One of NASA’s special favorite specimens, Aloe actually improves air quality by absorbing debris, microbes, and other harmful, sleep-disturbing air particles.

English Ivy – This modest plant requires very little maintenance in exchange for a big payoff: in addition to being shown to reduce symptoms of allergies and asthma, it has also been shown to reduce the amount of airborne mold by 78% in just 12 hours.

Peace Lilly – Another super star air purifier, Peace Lilies also act as mild humidifiers which can help to keep your sinuses moist and clear through the winter.

When Man Fails to Save Blind Old Dog From Swimming Out to Sea, Crew Comes to the Rescue

A blind old Border Collie named Fly had been playing with his owner on a beach earlier this week when disaster struck in the most peculiar way – the senior dog suddenly leapt into the ocean and started swimming for the horizon.

55-year-old Mark Cowing had been visiting Lepe Beach in Hampshire, England with Fly on holiday. When they were spending time on the sand, he was bewildered by his canine companion running into the surf.

“We were literally playing on the shoreline when all of a sudden he took it in his head to swim to the Isle of Wight,” Cowing told BBC. “When he got 20 or 30 feet out I had to strip off, down to my underpants, and go and rescue him.

“He disappeared out of sight so I presumed he drowned. I tried to wave for help but I thought I was a goner,” he added.

Luckily, a 71-year-old man in a kayak came to Cowing’s rescue and brought him back to shore. Without any sign of his beloved pup, however, Cowing feared the worst.

As fate would have it, a helicopter flying overhead finally spotted the dog 656 feet (200 meters) away from the shore. After directing a rescue lifeboat to the dog’s location, a crew member was able to jump into the water and haul Fly to safety. The crew says that – judging by Fly’s swimming – they “arrived just in time.”

Cowing, who was overwhelmed with relief at the return of his 12-year-old pup, said that the exhausted Border Collie ended up scarfing down four packets of food and a pork pie upon returning home.

City Hires Team of Doctors to Treat Addicts on the Street Right Where They Are

San Francisco is launching a groundbreaking new program that will provide opioid addiction treatment to homeless people directly on the streets.

Mayor Mark Marrell just announced that he will be investing $6 million in funding for the “first-in-the-nation” initiative as a means of curbing opioid addiction and reducing the risk of overdose.

The program employs a dedicated team of physicians to go out onto the Bay Area streets and write buprenorphine prescriptions for drug-addicted homeless people.

Buprenorphine is a pill that is taken daily to reduce withdrawal symptoms in drug users. The treatment has been shown to help in fighting off addiction and reducing rates of overdose.

RELATEDTown’s Compassionate Approach Cuts Rates of Overdose by More Than Half – State to Adopt It

When asked why the physicians provided the treatment on the streets, rather than in a clinic, Dr. Barry Zevin, who is the city’s medical director for Street Medicine and Shelter Health, told The New York Times: “Most health care for the homeless happens under the model of waiting for people to come in to a health center. But a lot of people never come in.”

“Appointments are the enemy of homeless people. On the street there are no appointments, and no penalties or judgments for missing appointments.”

WATCHRecovering Addict Gives Free Gym Memberships to Those Who Want to Stay Sober

A year-long pilot study of the program showed that “virtually all of the people” who were approached by the clinicians were interested in the treatment. By the end of the study, a fair amount of drug users were still taking buprenorphine as a means of treating their addiction with the help of the clinician team.

“The Street Medicine buprenorphine program is another important step to address the … crisis afflicting drug users in our community,” said Barbara Garcia, San Francisco Health Director. “Homeless people who use drugs are especially vulnerable, and our system of care needs to adapt. By going directly to them with compassionate outreach and expertise, we are able to help a group that we were missing by relying on a more traditional structure of clinic visits that does not work for everyone.”

94-Year-old Veteran Has Spent a Decade Cheering on Students With Life Advice and Fist Bumps

This “cute little old man” is making a big difference in the lives of local youngsters.

For the last 10 years, Wally Richardson has been standing outside of Marina Village Middle School in El Dorado Hills, California so he can greet all of the students with life advice and fist bumps before they start their school day.

The 94-year-old veteran was recently brought into the spotlight when Gina Arnold was dropping her daughter Audrey off at school earlier this week.

Audrey specifically asked if she could be dropped off at the corner of the school so she could talk to the “cute little old man”.

When asked who this mystery stranger was, Audrey told her mother: “He stands at the steps where you drop me off and encourages all the students as they walk in. He talks about kindness and gives us advice and fist bumps! It’s the best part of the day!”

Sure enough, when Gina drove to the aforementioned steps, she saw Richardson standing amongst a crowd of delighted students. She then took a photo of the exchange and posted it to Facebook with words of praise for the senior.

“This is exactly the kind of love and support our middle schoolers need,” wrote Gina. “This man stands out side the school every day and gives the gift of encouragement to every student that comes near him.”

Richardson simply says that he enjoys talking to the kids because he wants to leave a positive legacy in the area – and clearly, his efforts have worked.

There is now a mural on the school wall that is filled with some of the veteran’s most precious bits of wisdom so that it can serve hundreds of students in the future.

Gina told Inside Edition that there are even kids in college who still remember and benefit from the advice Richard gave them in their younger years.

“I strive to be like this guy as much as possible,” says Gina. “We all should.”

Goats Want to See You Smile, Says Adorable New Study

Step aside, dogs – goats may be man’s new best friend, according to a heartwarming new study.

A research team from the Royal Society Open Science has found that goats can recognize human emotions in facial recognition tests – and they consistently prefer happy faces to sad ones.

The scientists put 20 goats into a pen that was filled with photos of humans with happy faces and humans with sad or angry faces. Conclusively, the goats spent more time looking at, sniffing, or otherwise engaging with the happy images.

The researchers orchestrated the trials based on the belief that since goats have been domesticated alongside humans for thousands of years, the animals would have developed a heightened sensitivity to human emotion.

RELATEDIn Landmark Case, South Korean Court Rules That it is Illegal to Kill Dogs for Food

The research team now believes this study suggests that other domesticated animals are likely to show perception of emotional valence in humans as well, something that is considered to be limited amongst working animals.

The study has also been hailed as a wonderful step towards a better relationship with our working animals, and that more rights might be afforded to them if we can fully understand the levels of interaction between us.

“The study of emotion perception has already shown very complex abilities in dogs and horses,” says study co-author Natalia Albuquerque. “However, to date, there was no evidence that animals such as goats were capable of reading human facial expressions. Our results open new paths to understanding the emotional lives of all domestic animals.”

Louis Makepeace has wanted to be a chef since he was a kid. When he was conditionally accepted into a cooking and hospitality course at Worcester College, however, he was later “appalled” to find out that the school had backtracked on their decision and would not allow him to take the course because his height made him a “safety risk” in the kitchen.

Since Makepeace has dwarfism, he stands at just 3 feet 10 inches tall. After the teen accused the school of discrimination, his story was spread across social media until it caught the eye of celebrity chef Gordan Ramsay.

Ramsay tweeted that he would be more than happy to offer Makepeace an apprenticeship “any day”.

“Gordon’s tweet was a genuine offer of help for Louis Makepeace, should he wish to pursue his cooking career within the Gordon Ramsay Restaurants chef apprentice programme,” said a spokesperson for Ramsay, according to the BBC.

Additionally, she says that Ramsay has “supported and mentored hundreds of young chefs throughout his career, and strongly believes no one should be discriminated against in the workplace due to a disability.”

Makepeace says that he has since been in touch with Ramsay’s agent about pursuing the apprenticeship in the near future.
