Watch a Family of Divers Rescue a Whale Shark With Rope Wrapped Around Its Body

A Hawaiian family came to the rescue of an endangered whale shark earlier this month when they discovered a 150-pound rope wrapped around its body.

Marine biologists Kapua Kawelo and Joby Rohrer were swimming with their teenage children off the coast on Lanai, Hawaii when they were awestruck by the rare appearance of the 20-foot shark.

When they saw the tangled fishing net on its neck, however, they were determined to help.

With a small diving knife in hand, Rohrer made five different dives down to depths of 50 to 60 feet so he could slowly and methodically cut the rope free. Though his family members wanted to help, he was the only one who was able to hold his breath for extended periods of time.

The whale shark seemed to acknowledge the human’s rescue efforts, as it calmly remained in place throughout the 45-minute process.

Finally, Roher managed to cut the rope free and his 15-year-old daughter towed it back to shore so it wouldn’t harm any more sea life.

Brad Norman, who is a National Geographic explorer, states that whale sharks typically swim away when they’re touched, and the fact that it lingered so peacefully was “amazing to see.”

America’s Largest Grocery Store Chain is Saying Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic Bags

Kroger, America’s largest supermarket chain, has just announced that it will be phasing out all of its single-use plastic bags in favor of reusable alternatives by 2025.

Kroger operates 2,800 stores across the country, as well as their additional subsidiary stores including Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and Ralphs.

Their QFC stores in the Pacific Northwest will be the first to eliminate single-use bags by their 2019 deadline, as they are already working around Seattle’s municipal plastic bag ban.

According to an op-ed that was published by Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, the company issues roughly 6 billion of the 100 billion plastic bags that are used in the USA every year, which is enough to “fill three Houston Astrodomes from top to bottom, year-after-year, with nothing but plastic bags.”

RELATEDWorld’s Second Largest Fast Food Chain Begins Phase-Out of Plastic Straws

“When our company’s phase out of single-use grocery bags is fully implemented, the waste generated by these bags at our family of stores will drop by 123 million pounds per year,” said McMullen. “To give a sense of just how big a number that is, that’s equal to the weight of the entire population of Detroit.”

“The plastic shopping bag’s days are numbered,” he added. “Our customers have told us it makes no sense to have so much plastic only to be used once before being discarded – and they’re exactly right.”

How to Build Rapport With Everyone by Learning the 3 Types of Body Language

The Lesson: Did you know that there are three types of processing styles in the world? 75 percent of people are classified as “lookers”; 20 percent are “ listeners”; and 5 percent are “touchers”. In addition to discussing the basic characteristics of each group, body language expert Lynne Franklin also explains and categorizes the less obvious behavioral tendencies. From having thin lips to pen clicking and holding stress in one’s shoulders, many seemingly meaningless tendencies can be very telling of the inner workings of a person’s mind. Franklin teaches the audience how to use this information to tailor their own language and behavior when speaking to each specific type, and she shares the useful secrets of navigating these social interactions with ease, so that misunderstandings can be avoided and an easy rapport can emerge from every new connection.

Notable Excerpt: “People’s brains process information in three different ways and their body language will tell you all day long what their primary style is. You just need to know what to look for and what to do when you see it – and it’s not like … ‘she’s leaning back, her arms are crossed, and she’s frowning so she must be unhappy’. It’s actually understanding how their brains work and then presenting your information in a way that people can see it, hear it, and feel it. It’ll increase the chances that they’ll say yes to whatever you’re proposing.”

The Speaker: After being forced to talk someone out of their decision to attack her with a machete, persuasion became a topic of great importance to Lynne Franklin. In addition to working in consulting and marketing, she delved into the study of neuroscience and people-skills, working with various organizations to apply her newfound knowledge to the business world. An expert in communication, she is also a President-elect of the Illinois chapter of the National Speakers Association.

Books: Lynne Franklin is the author of “Getting Others to Do What You Want”, a book that is a culmination of her vast knowledge of the brain and the way people work.

Man Creates Elaborate Cardboard Castle to Reconcile With His Cat – and It Worked

Have you ever loved someone so fiercely, you insisted on building them a castle? Well, that’s exactly what Billy Browne did for his cat.

In a YouTube video, Browne explains that he had been forced to give ear drops to his cat Rufus as a means of treating a nasty ear infection.

Unfortunately, the drops were quite painful and Rufus was less than reluctant to endure the 2-week treatment.

RELATEDWatching This Little Girl Read to a Sleepy Cat is the Video to Soothe Your Soul

“I would return from work and he would run from me!” writes Browne. “Now [that his] ears are better I wanted to do something to show my gratitude for his putting up with my torture.”

So as a means of reconciling with his beloved feline, Browne built him a castle out of his favorite medium: cardboard boxes.

The best part? Rufus actually defied typical feline stereotypes and loved the elaborate fort.

Police Officer Insists on Breastfeeding Hungry, ‘Dirty’ Baby, Gets Promoted

Officer Celeste Jaqueline Ayala-Facebook

This Argentinian police officer is being praised for her maternal kindness after she was seen breastfeeding a hungry crying baby at a hospital.

Officer Celeste Jaqueline Ayala was working as a guard at the Sor Maria Ludovica children’s hospital in Buenos Aires when she heard an infant crying.

When she ran to find the source of the wailing, she found that the cries were coming from a baby boy who had been taken into custody by police.

Since the hospital staff already had their hands full with other patients, Ayala asked if she could hold and feed the baby.

RELATEDPolice Officer Vaults Over 30-Foot Overpass in Order to Save Suicidal Boy

Despite the boy being described by the employees as “dirty and smelly”, the officer insisted on helping the infant anyway.

“I noticed that he was hungry, as he was putting his hand into his mouth, so I asked to hug him and breastfeed him,” Ayala told Cronica of her deed. “It was a sad moment, it broke my soul seeing him like this.”

As she lovingly cradled the baby, an onlooker named Marcos Heredia snapped a photo of the powerful moment and posted it to social media where it has since been shared thousands of times. The officer didn’t mind the exposure at all, and in the end it benefitted her, too.

“I want to make public this great gesture of love that you had today with that baby,” wrote Heredia. “You did not care about the dirt and the smell as the professional gentlemen of the hospital said. Things like that are not seen every day.”

The security department for which Ayala works made a Twitter post earlier this week saying that – in light of her kindness and integrity – they promoted her from officer to sergeant, saying that she was the kind of “police we’re proud of” and “the police we want.”

No More Cages: New Animal Cracker Packaging Sets Mascots Free to Represent the Changing Times

One of the world’s most beloved animal-shaped snacks has received a much-needed makeover to reflect our changing times.

Instead of depicting lions and tigers and bears behind bars, new packaging for the iconic animal cracker brand now depicts the animals roaming free in the wild.

According to Modelez International, the parent company of Barnum’s Animals, the new box will be one more step to encouraging the cultural shift towards animal rights awareness.

“To continue to make the brand relevant for years to come, we felt this was the right time for the next evolution in our design, now showing the animals in a natural habitat,” said a spokesperson from Mondelez.

RELATEDRats Are Saving Elephants From Hidden Landmines on Their Migration Routes

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are rejoicing in the change after they had reportedly been in discussions with Barnum’s Animals about changing the 116-year-old design.

“Big victories can come in small packages, and no matter where we look, we find new evidence that people are embracing compassion for animals like never before,” the organization said in a statement.

“The new box for Barnum’s Animals perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates caging and chaining exotic animals for circus shows,” they added.

Jon Stewart Helps Rescue Two Runaway Goats From NYC Subway Tracks

You never know who – or what – you will run into on the subway; whether it’s a dynamic duo of escaped farm animals or famed actor and comedian Jon Stewart.

Two wayward goats were able to have a chance encounter with the former The Daily Show host while on the tracks of the N subway line in Brooklyn earlier this week.

Presumably sick of waiting for the train, the goats were walking along the tracks when they were spotted by New York City’s transit authorities.

The two runways were munching on grass near the tracks when they were tranquilized by police so they could be moved safely.

A rescue team from the Farm Sanctuary arrived to transport the goats – and the team included none other than Stewart and his wife Tracy.

The comedian and his wife have been supporters of the sanctuary since 2015, owning a farm in New Jersey which also serves as a home for abused animals. The star-struck goats, who are now nicknamed Willy and Billy, were taken to the Watkins Glen sanctuary in New York where a spokeswomen stated: “There, they will receive medical examinations and the world-class, individualized care.”

World Record One Million Crayons Donated in Rainbow of Support for 700 Teachers

Over 700 teachers are rejoicing over a very special new world record: the most amount of crayons donated to a charity in under eight hours.

A massive donation drive for Los Angeles teachers managed to raise 1,009,500 gently-used crayons, thus setting a new Guinness World Record.

The drive was organized by Crayon Collection, a nonprofit that supports teachers, the environment, and arts education by donating gently-used crayons to educators.

As a means of celebrating the achievement in Westfield Culver City last week, an artist arranged the boxes of crayons into a maze that was slowly deconstructed as the supplies were distributed amongst the teachers. Dozens of kids participated in the Crayon Collection’s The Color Kindness Program, which involves rebagging donated crayons for other children, and including a handwritten note of kindness. Illustrators from Nickelodeon were even on hand to draw up some doodles for the kids in attendance.

LOOKHundreds of People Bring Backpacks Instead of Flowers to Woman’s Funeral

“Today was epic, it was a dream come true to see the face of these teachers have a little relief from all the spending they are forced to do on a daily basis at their schools,” said Crayon Collection’s founder and president Sheila Morovati. “We’re so proud and honored to serve this community in the way that we did today.”

According to the nonprofit, the average teacher spends $900 out of their own pocket each school year so their students can have the supplies they need. Studies have proven that children with arts education perform better in all subjects, including math, reading and writing.

But now, with a year’s supply of crayons in hand, these teachers are sure to help their kids succeed.

Watch Good Samaritan Carry Struggling Older Man to His Car

Not all heroes wear capes – even if they apparently have the super strength to carry a full-grown man to his car.

Clint Groom saw such a Good Samaritan back in April when he was sitting in his car outside of a convenience store in Haltom City, Texas.

He saw a younger man run over to help an elderly stranger who appeared to be having trouble walking across the parking lot.

At first, the man gently tried to help the senior walk back to his truck – but after making little progress, the man simply offered to carry the senior back to his car.

The compassionate man then scooped up the smiling older gentleman and carried him all the way to his car. After gently setting the senior down, the man made sure he was okay, bid him farewell, and walked back to the convenience store.

The identity of the kind man is unknown, but his good deed has garnered plenty of praise on the internet since it was published.

Scientists Delight in Solving Culinary Quandary: How to Break Spaghetti Noodles Without Making a Mess

MIT mathematicians solve age-old spaghetti mystery
It’s nearly impossible to break a dry spaghetti noodle into only two pieces. A new MIT study shows how and why it can be done.
Written by Jennifer Chu
MIT News

If you happen to have a box of spaghetti in your pantry, try this experiment: Pull out a single spaghetti stick and hold it at both ends. Now bend it until it breaks. How many fragments did you make? If the answer is three or more, pull out another stick and try again. Can you break the noodle in two? If not, you’re in very good company.

The spaghetti challenge has flummoxed even the likes of famed physicist Richard Feynman ’39, who once spent a good portion of an evening breaking pasta and looking for a theoretical explanation for why the sticks refused to snap in two.

Feynman’s kitchen experiment remained unresolved until 2005, when physicists from France pieced together a theory to describe the forces at work when spaghetti — and any long, thin rod — is bent. They found that when a stick is bent evenly from both ends, it will break near the center, where it is most curved. This initial break triggers a “snap-back” effect and a bending wave, or vibration, that further fractures the stick. Their theory, which won the 2006 Ig Nobel Prize, seemed to solve Feynman’s puzzle. But a question remained: Could spaghetti ever be coerced to break in two?

RELATEDDrinking Baking Soda Could Be Cheap, Safe Way to Combat Autoimmune Disease, Says Scientists

The answer, according to a new MIT study, is yes — with a twist. In a paper published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that they have found a way to break spaghetti in two, by both bending and twisting the dry noodles. They carried out experiments with hundreds of spaghetti sticks, bending and twisting them with an apparatus they built specifically for the task. The team found that if a stick is twisted past a certain critical degree, then slowly bent in half, it will, against all odds, break in two.

The researchers say the results may have applications beyond culinary curiosities, such as enhancing the understanding of crack formation and how to control fractures in other rod-like materials such as multifiber structures, engineered nanotubes, or even microtubules in cells.

“It will be interesting to see whether and how twist could similarly be used to control the fracture dynamics of two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials,” says co-author Jörn Dunkel, associate professor of physical applied mathematics at MIT. “In any case, this has been a fun interdisciplinary project started and carried out by two brilliant and persistent students — who probably don’t want to see, break, or eat spaghetti for a while.”

Graduate student Ronald Heisser, together with project partner Edgar Gridello, originally took up the challenge of breaking spaghetti in the spring of 2015, as a final project for a dynamics class. They had read about Feynman’s kitchen experiment, and wondered whether spaghetti could somehow be broken in two and whether this split could be controlled.

MOREGive Yourself a Break – New Research Says Kicking Back in a Sauna Has Surprising Health Benefits

“They did some manual tests, tried various things, and came up with an idea that when he twisted the spaghetti really hard and brought the ends together, it seemed to work and it broke into two pieces,” Dunkel says. “But you have to twist really strongly. And Ronald wanted to investigate more deeply.”

So Heisser built a mechanical fracture device to controllably twist and bend sticks of spaghetti. Two clamps on either end of the device hold a stick of spaghetti in place. A clamp at one end can be rotated to twist the dry noodle by various degrees, while the other clamp slides toward the twisting clamp to bring the two ends of the spaghetti together, bending the stick.

Heisser and Patil used the device to bend and twist hundreds of spaghetti sticks, and recorded the entire fragmentation process with a camera, at up to a million frames per second. In the end, they found that by first twisting the spaghetti at almost 360 degrees, then slowly bringing the two clamps together to bend it, the stick snapped exactly in two. The findings were consistent across two types of spaghetti: Barilla No. 5 and Barilla No. 7, which have slightly different diameters.

CHECK OUTMost People Don’t Get Enough Vitamin D, But This App Can Fix That

In parallel, Patil began to develop a mathematical model to explain how twisting can snap a stick in two. To do this, he generalized previous work by the French scientists Basile Audoly and Sebastien Neukirch, who developed the original theory to describe the “snap-back effect,” in which a secondary wave caused by a stick’s initial break creates additional fractures, causing spaghetti to mostly snap in three or more fragments.

Patil adapted this theory by adding the element of twisting, and looked at how twist should affect any forces and waves propagating through a stick as it is bent. From his model, he found that, if a 10-inch-long spaghetti stick is first twisted by about 270 degrees and then bent, it will snap in two, mainly due to two effects. The snap-back, in which the stick will spring back in the opposite direction from which it was bent, is weakened in the presence of twist. And, the twist-back, where the stick will essentially unwind to its original straightened configuration, releases energy from the rod, preventing additional fractures.

“Once it breaks, you still have a snap-back because the rod wants to be straight,” Dunkel explains. “But it also doesn’t want to be twisted.”

Just as the snap-back will create a bending wave, in which the stick will wobble back and forth, the unwinding generates a “twist wave,” where the stick essentially corkscrews back and forth until it comes to rest. The twist wave travels faster than the bending wave, dissipating energy so that additional critical stress accumulations, which might cause subsequent fractures, do not occur.

RELATED10 Amazing Things You Can Learn From Your Poop

“That’s why you never get this second break when you twist hard enough,” Dunkel says.

The team found that the theoretical predictions of when a thin stick would snap in two pieces, versus three or four, matched with their experimental observations.

“Taken together, our experiments and theoretical results advance the general understanding of how twist affects fracture cascades,” Dunkel says.

For now, he says the model is successful at predicting how twisting and bending will break long, thin, cylindrical rods such as spaghetti. As for other pasta types?

“Linguini is different because it’s more like a ribbon,” Dunkel says. “The way the model is constructed it applies to perfectly cylindrical rods. Although spaghetti isn’t perfect, the theory captures its fracture behavior pretty well,”

Theater Hosts Dementia-Friendly Screening of ‘Mamma Mia’ After Movie-Goers Complain of Senior’s Singing

Shirley Lewis is a 68-year-old woman who adores the Mamma Mia films and also suffers from Alzheimer’s disease.

So when a fellow movie-goer expressed their disapproval of the woman loudly singing along to Mamma Mia 2, the theater stepped up to the plate by hosting an entire showing of the film just for people with dementia.

Lewis had gone to the Cineworld movie theater in Cwmbran, Wales to see the film with her daughter Rhiannon last month. The senior was so delighted by the music, she started singing along to all of the ABBA tunes in the film.

Unfortunately, some other spectators were not as thrilled by Lewis’s enthusiasm. The people sitting behind Lewis and her daughter in the cinema started “huffing, puffing and tutting” over her participation.

RELATEDWhen Grandma With Alzheimer’s Can’t Do Her Puzzles, Teen Comes Up With Perfect Solution

Rhiannon was made so uncomfortable by the people’s noises, she ended up leaving the theater with her mother.

“At the time, I was empathetic to the other guests in the cinema, however on reflection I really wish I had told that lady so that she could have learnt her lesson in front of a room full of strangers,” Rhiannon told South Wales Argus.

“My mum was really sad. She did not want to leave the cinema,” she added.

Rhiannon posted about the event on Facebook and expressed her frustration that her mother was not able to fully enjoy the film.

The post was shared hundreds of times until it was eventually seen by the staff at Cineworld. The theater not only offered free tickets to Rhiannon and her mother, they also hosted an entire screening for people with dementia and offered discounted tickets.

Over 100 excited participants showed up for the event. Additionally, all of the proceeds from the screening were donated to the Alzheimer’s Society.

“The event means a lot to us as a family,” Rhiannon happily told the news outlet. “The screening of the film should now raise awareness of dementia and teach people more about it.”

Goldfish Can Find a New Forever Home at Paris Aquarium – 600 Have Already Been Welcomed

While most unwanted cats and dogs can find solace in an animal shelter, the same sanctuary is not often offered to unwanted fish.

Thankfully, the biggest aquarium in Paris is offering up a new home for surrendered fish.

The Aquarium de Paris has started taking in goldfish that can no longer live with their original owners.

With locals surrendering roughly 50 goldfish per month, the aquarium’s tank now accommodates about 600 specimens, many of which may have endured a worst fate if they had not been welcomed into their new home.

RELATEDInstead of Seeing Fireworks on Fourth of July, 200 People Spent Their Holiday Comforting Shelter Dogs

Upon arriving at the aquarium, the surrendered goldfish are given antibiotics and parasitic treatments to ensure they won’t harm the other fish. After one month of quarantine, they are transferred into the tank for public viewing.

The service offers a host of benefits – for starters, it discourages owners from flushing their oceanic pets down the toilet. It also keeps humans from dumping the fish into rivers, as goldfish are an invasive species.

LOOKComfy Armchairs Pouring in For Animal Shelter So Every Pet Can Have a Spot

Additionally, goldfish bowls that are smaller than 20 gallons (100 liters) can stunt the growth of the fish.

The fish that are surrendered to the aquarium will often grow up to 8 to 12 inches after being given the room to swim. They also tend to live longer thanks to their ability to socialize with their fellow fishies.

Animal rights activists are praising the service and hoping that other aquariums will follow example and give goldfish a second chance.

When Wedding Caterer Backs Out at Last Second, Restaurant Saves the Day in Just 90 Minutes

Mr. and Mrs. Vansledright were ready to meet each other at the altar for their wedding earlier this month – unfortunately, the catering company was not so ready.

Since the company thought that the wedding was a week later than its actual date, they had no food prepared for the event.

In tears, the bride and groom went to the restaurant next door and begged them for help.

Nick Ruesticus, who is the owner of the Sonder eatery in Hudsonville, Michigan, said that there was no way he could turn down the desperate couple.

RELATEDWhen Beach Wedding is Rained Out, Stranger Runs Up to Bride and Offers Up Her Home Instead

He and his staff proceeded to close down the restaurant for the day so they could go above and beyond for the wedding feast.

In just 90 minutes, the restaurant put together a cocktail hour and wedding food for 150 people. They even made sure there were vegetarian and vegan options in addition to a choice between beef and chicken.

Needless to say, the Vansledrights were in awe of Sonder’s kindness. They were able to get their money back from the original caterer, but they say that they don’t know what they would have done if the compassionate staff had not stepped up to help.
