FDA Approves Once-Monthly Preventative Migraine Treatment With No Major Side Effects

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a new preventative treatment for migraines in adults.

The treatment, which is called Emgality, is a once-monthly, self-administered injection that was developed by global pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company.

“Despite the devastating impact of migraine, only about 10 percent of people living with the disease are currently taking a preventive treatment,” said Christi Shaw, president of Lilly Bio-Medicines. “With this approval, we are thrilled to offer a preventive treatment option to adults living with this disease.”

Migraine is a disabling, neurologic disease that affects more than 30 million American adults. According to the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey, the total unadjusted cost associated with migraine in the U.S. is estimated to be as high as $56 billion annually, yet migraine remains “under-recognized and under-treated”.

But now, hope may be on the horizon for migraine sufferers. According to several double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, the Emgality injections had no major side effects and they cut chronic and episodic migraines by as much as 50% – which is being hailed as “a huge deal” by physicians.

Emgality will be available to patients shortly after approval. Patients with commercial insurance may also be able to receive up to 12 months of the treatment for free as part of Lilly’s patient support program.

This Movie Star Lives Such a Simple and Happy Life, He’s Giving His $714 Million Net Worth to Charity

Chow Yun-Fat, the beloved movie star from Hong Kong, has recently announced that he will be giving away his entire fortune to charity.

The 63-year-old celebrity and philanthropist has starred in such films as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, A Better Tomorrow, and The Replacement Killers.

Though he has accumulated a staggering net worth of $714 million over the course of his career, he apparently has no need for such wealth.

RELATEDRick Steves Sacrifices Nest Egg to House Dozens of Homeless Women and Kids

According to Chinese news outlet ET Today, Yun-Fat lives a very modest lifestyle, spending only about $100 per month ($800 HKD). Instead of driving luxury sports cars and living in a mansion like one might expect of a stereotypical celebrity, he buys his clothes at thrift stores; he and his wife prefer to eat at food stalls; he takes public transit whenever he can; and he only recently bought a smart phone after the Nokia phone – which he had owned for 17 years – finally broke.

He and his wife say that they plan on giving the fortune away to a number of charities, in addition to their own charity, which they have managed for several years.

“My dream is to be a happy and normal person,” Yun-Fat told ET. “The hardest thing in life is not about how much money you earn, but how to keep a peaceful mindset and live the rest of your life in a simple and carefree manner.”

Doctors Can Now Prescribe Social Activities for Lonely Seniors – and Mailmen Will Help Out Too

General healthcare practitioners in England are now being encouraged to prescribe social activities as a means of curbing loneliness amongst older citizens.

Prime Minister Theresa May says that the government will be providing the National Healthcare System an additional £1.8 million ($2.3 million) in funding to facilitate new dance and cooking lessons, community cafés, and other group projects for seniors by 2023.

Additionally, the government is partnering with postal workers from the Royal Mail service to check in on seniors during their daily rounds.

“This strategy is only the beginning of delivering a long and far reaching social change in our country – but it is a vital first step in a national mission to end loneliness in our lifetimes,” said May, according to the BBC.

As Thank You For Being Ray of Sunshine, Hurricane Volunteer Builds Stunning Cardboard Fort for 2-Year-old

This article has been reprinted via the Red Cross

Abby may only be 2 years old, but she is the perfect person to have in an evacuation shelter.

The bubble-blowing youngster, who is described as energetic, positive and “a lot of fun”, spent several nights at a Red Cross shelter at W.T. Brown Elementary School in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with her three older siblings and mother after they were evacuated ahead of Hurricane Florence.

“She had the biggest personality of anyone in the shelter,” said volunteer Chelsey Griggs. “She would always come around the corner of the registration desk to say good morning to everybody.”

Abby’s family had been through this sort of ordeal before since they lost everything they had in Hurricane Matthew. This time, however, their Spring Lake home was spared.

So now, the family helps at the shelter whenever they can.

Abby’s cheerful attitude was rewarded when Griggs gathered a bunch of discarded cot boxes and built a kiddie castle for the delighted guest. It was a perfect way to help the pint-sized princess pass the time – because after all, life in a shelter can be pretty boring for little ones who aren’t surrounded by the comforts of home.

Abby’s face lit up at the sight of the box castle.

“Is that for me?” she asked.

Using plastic cups for the spires and filling the inside with a Red Cross blanket and toys, Griggs’ finishing touches were a tinfoil crown for Abby and a sign that read “Red Cross Castle” right above the entrance.

The local sheriff’s deputies even got in on the fun by posing as guards in front of Abby’s castle door.

An engineer in Los Angeles got sick being bombarded by endless bad news and television ads on public screens—so he created a pair of sunglasses that can block out the tirade of screens.

Have you ever been in a queue somewhere—or waiting at the airport gate or doctor’s office—where they’re playing 24-hour cable news and you just wished you could turn it off?

Scott Blew was in line at a food truck, of all places—and even outdoors he couldn’t escape the glare of droning negative news.

He remembered reading about a special kind of film that could block out LED and LCD light. So he decided to try ordering some of the film and putting it on a regular pair of glasses—and he was delighted to find that it worked perfectly.

RELATEDHow to Follow Negative News Without Getting Depressed

With the help of artist Ivan Cash, the two friends designed the IRL Glasses, which stands for ‘in real life’.

The shades utilize a special kind of polarized lens that blocks the light. Whens someone wears the glasses in a sports bar, for instance, and looks around, the TV screens magically seem to go black.

Some cool videos they posted online show how their current prototype can block out any television, and also most computers.

They created a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to manufacture them, and in three days it reached its goal of $25,000. The page has raised $110,000—with two more weeks of crowdfunding remaining.

Wearing the glasses in public for a few months have also piqued peoples’ interest. The duo get stopped on the street because Cash modeled the glasses to look just like those in the 1988 sci-fi movie They Live, about a man who discovers a pair of glasses that can magically block out advertisements.

In an interview with WIRED, Cash says he hopes the product is also a conversation starter about how ubiquitous news broadcasts affect our lives and how people want control over their exposure to technology.

Next, we think someone needs to develop technology that can block out only the bad news.

Artists Invite Refugees to Transform Their Prison Shelter into Bright Community of Color

Is it possible to transform a prison, using only paint, into a welcoming space? A creative team in Amsterdam proved it can be done brilliantly.

Following the refugee crisis of the early decade, the Dutch nation was scrambling to find sustainable housing for the influx of migrants.

Fortunately, with rapidly decreasing rates of crime in the Netherlands, more and more prison buildings were closed down and available for reuse.

After the Bijlmerbajes prison closed, more than 600 weary refugees were given warm beds, meals, and shelter inside the facility until they were granted citizenship and acclimated into society with jobs and housing of their own—but the site was gloomy.

Enter Favela Painting. You may remember this dynamic Dutch Duo from a project they undertook at a slum in Rio back in 2013. They covered hundreds of shacks and shops on a hillside with a rainbow of neon colors, putting local youth to work, some of whom had been drug dealers before learning the new skill of painting.

To brighten up the former prisons’ dreary façades, the same artists from Favela Painting launched the Amsterdam Project in which they invited the refugees themselves to learn how to paint the prison in geometric colors and designs.

Not only did it liven up the concrete community, it also gave the migrants a chance to learn the skills of design and painting, while fostering lasting friendships.

A Gym Made Entirely Out of Melted-Down Knives Provides Powerful Alternative to Violence

This charity has utilized a powerful medium to dissuade youth from getting into trouble on the streets.

Steel Warriors created an outdoor fitness gym that is made entirely out of recycled knives and blades that were confiscated by the police.

The London gym was crafted using over 2.5 tons of steel from steel weapons that might have encouraged a life of crime. According to the charity, they take “careful steps to avoid building with knives that have been used in conflict” and “all knives used have been discounted as evidence and are set for destruction.”

RELATEDWoman Catches Thief Then Takes Him Out For Coffee

“Knives are in the very DNA of the gym,” Steel Warriors co-founder Ben Wintour told Sky News. “If it was just a normal gym people wouldn’t necessarily talk about the (knife crime) issue, but because it’s built into the gym itself, it gets people talking about it.”

Since the gym was established on gang-neutral territory back in 2017, it has garnered praise for its ability to raise awareness about knife crime in London.

Wintour and fellow Steel Warrior co-founder Pia Fontes hope that the exercise space will provide a strong visual example for youngsters to choose wellness and self-care instead of engaging in violence.

Chelsea Soccer Club to Fight Antisemitism by Offering Education at Auschwitz for Racist Fans, Rather Than Bans

Auschwitz main gate - credit, CC Dnalor 01.

As a means of personally combatting antisemitism amongst their fans, the powerful Chelsea football club in England will be offering their fans an alternative to being banned from home games.

Perviously, if a fan had displayed racist behavior towards the Jewish demographic of the fanbase, the club would confiscate their season tickets and bar them from the games for up to three years.

But now, Roman Abramovich, the Jewish owner of the Stamford Bridge stadium in Fulham, London, is spearheading an initiative that will offer the supporters an option: they can either accept the 3-year ban or they can participate in the educational courses that are taught at Auschwitz.

Furthermore, Chelsea is so intent on curbing racist behavior, they will be covering all of the costs of the courses.

“If you just ban people, you will never change their behavior,” said Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck, according to The Sun. “This policy gives them the chance to realize what they have done, to make them want to behave better.

“In the past, we would take them from the crowd and ban them, for up to three years. Now we say ‘You did something wrong. You have the option. We can ban you or you can spend some time with our diversity officers, understanding what you did wrong’.”

The initiative has reportedly been backed by the World Jewish Congress and the Holocaust Education Trust.

35,000 People Have Applied to Take Care of Couple’s Cat Sanctuary on a Greek Island

For the last eight years, this couple has been taking in dozens of stray cats at their home on a Greek island—and since their social media post asking for help, the world has stepped up to lend a hand. Additionally, a single lucky applicant will get to live on a Greek island for FREE with a bunch of cats.

Richard and Joan Bowell have been using their own money to care for over 65 cats that they’ve welcomed onto their property. On top of that, they also care for a nearby colony of feral felines.

The Bowells first stepped up as caregivers back in 2010 when they found that a stray had given birth to two kittens on their one-acre property.

Soon enough, however, they kept finding hungry and abandoned cats across the island that they couldn’t bear to ignore, so they continued taking in the strays.

They eventually transformed their property into a cat sanctuary called God’s Little People.

LOOKPhotos of 75-Year-Old Volunteer Napping With Cats Hauls in Funds to Run Sanctuary for a Year

“A wise man once introduced me to the term ‘God’s Little People’ when talking about animals,” says Joan. “The words are so endearing and so full of kindness and compassion that they’ve stuck with me ever since.”

Over the years, Joan and Richard took in so many cats, their property could not handle more furry residents, so they decided to post a job listing on social media for someone to manage God’s Little People. They also wanted to move forward with their plans to move to New York and open another sanctuary.

In the past, the couple had posted similar internet listings only to receive a handful of responses. This time, in early August, they wrote a summary of the modestly-paid job and published it to Facebook hoping to receive a few dozen applications.

Joan made sure to emphasize how much work would be required: In addition to attending countless veterinary appointments, cleaning up vomit, distributing medications for the chronically-ill felines and providing food and water to 55 cats, the felines would, of course, need love and affection. In exchange for the work and small salary, the applicant would get to live rent-free on a Greek island with dozens of cats.

Within hours of posting the job, it spread like wildfire. It was picked up by news stations and shared across social media until—after six weeks—Joan and Richard had received 35,000 job applications from 90 countries.

Struggling Family Loses Last $600 in Online Auto Scam, So Stranger Gives Them His Car

Despite being conned out of their savings by an online scam, a family’s luck has turned around after their story was broadcast on the radio—and it’s completely renewed their faith in humanity.

Nathan and Madison Donovan were in the market for a car to drive so she could begin working at a downtown call center.

Nathan has been unable to work after breaking his back in a car accident several years ago and since the bus system in Moncton, New Brunswick doesn’t run at night, Madison needed the car to go back to work and get the small family off of social assistance.

When they found an online loan company, they applied for a car loan of $7,000. The company required a $600 deposit as collateral, and the couple forked over their savings in hopes of being one step closer to getting an automobile.

RELATEDWhen Student Accepts Stranger’s Accidental Invitation to a Funeral, She Becomes ‘Brightest’ Part of the Day

Days after they made the $600 payment, however, the company’s website was taken down and the couple’s calls went unanswered. Heartbroken, they contacted CBC News about telling their story as a means of preventing other families from making the same mistake.

“It would get us up out of the hole we’re in,” Nathan told the news outlet about their attempt to get a car. “So I think it was the hope that kind of blinded us to the reality that this was a scam.”

Fortunately, their willingness to save others from the scam ended up paying off; a man named Denis LeBlanc had been in the middle of trying to sell his 2007 Volkswagen Jetta when he heard Nathan’s story on the radio.

LOOKAunt Writes Emotional Note to Stranger Who Opened Her Arms to a Boy She’d Never Met

He and his wife had been trying to sell the car for at least $3,700, but they had only received several lowball offers from online buyers. By that time, they had already been contemplating simply giving the car away to charity—so when they heard about Nathan’s situation, they knew just what to do

Having recently been burned, Nathan was hesitant to visit a stranger giving away a perfectly good car, but when he showed up, the LeBlancs were true to their word. With a gush of gratitude, Nathan simply got in the Jetta and drove away.

The good deed has entirely changed his family’s fortunes for the better.

“Everything is going awesome. The car is great,” Nathan told CBC News. “Madison is working full time and we are no longer on assistance.”

“We have a renewed sense of hope not only in our financial future but in our fellow man,” he added.

LeBlanc, meanwhile, was able to teach his kids a valuable lesson about helping others who are less fortunate.

“They were like, ‘So we didn’t get any money for this, Dad?’ And I go, ‘No, sometimes it’s just the right thing to do,’ and they were like, ‘Yeah, that’s a good idea Dad,” he recalled for CBC.

Here Are the Best Foods You Can Eat to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

It’s hard to imagine a more frustrating feeling than lying in your bed trying to fall asleep without the sandman coming by to help in the hours after you’ve turned off the lights.

Sleep along with diet, stress management, physical activity, and carcinogen avoidance have in recent years become more and more involved in helping the medical field create the picture for a healthy lifestyle.

There is a large body of scientific work which suggests that sleep-deprived individuals seek out easily palatable foods such as the simple sugars and heavy-hitting carbohydrates found in typical junk food. It’s speculated that as the number of hours between sleeps increases, the brain tries to find larger sources of energy in order to keep itself awake.

This is why certain countries – like Denmark – labeled nighttime shift work as a possible carcinogen.

RELATEDAcupuncture Could Be a Non-Pharmaceutical Source of Pain Relief for Those Resisting Opioids

However, there are a number of foods which seem to reduce the time it takes to fall asleep and improve overall sleep quality.

So which foods are they? Notepads out, ladies and gentlemen.

Our brains produce a hormone called melatonin (also known as the sleep hormone) which is suppressed when we are awake during the daytime and becomes more active when the sun goes down as part of our circadian rhythms. Melatonin production seems to be closely correlated to the intake of an essential amino-acid called tryptophan which can only be acquired through dietary sources.

MORENew Study Shows That Weight Loss Can Be Boosted Fivefold Thanks to Novel Mental Imagery Technique

A team of Japanese researchers demonstrated that the combination of a breakfast consisting of tryptophan rich foods, followed by exposure to bright light during the day time, resulted in much higher concentrations of melatonin in the saliva and urine during the nighttime.

Tryptophan is present in protein-rich food sources such as red meat, poultry, eggs, and fish. Fish is an especially good choice due to the presence of essential B vitamins that increase tryptophan in your body, while fish with bones, such as mackerel, sardines, and anchovies are even better for attaining good quality sleep due to the magnesium content.

There is also hope for our vegetarian and vegan readers since there is tryptophan and B vitamins that are also present in beans, lentils, and tofu. Nuts and seeds, such as cashews, almonds, flaxseeds, pistachios, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, and especially pumpkin seeds are also notoriously high in tryptophan.

CHECK OUT: Got Kidney Stones? Ride a Roller Coaster, Says Study

Finally, if you find yourself starting to feel less peckish, chamomile tea (though not technically a food) has been shown to improve sleep quality and help people fall asleep 15 minutes faster than non-tea drinkers.

And remember, the time that it takes for tryptophan to work its magic on your melatonin is a lengthy process that takes a little over an hour; so try and plan out a meal for at least an hour before your bedtime.

But if you’re a busy bee and you’ve left it late, cheese, partly-skimmed milk, or a small banana are all good options if you find yourself hungry just before bedtime.

Why This Refugee-Owned Falafel House in Tennessee Was Voted the Nicest Place in America

Editor’s Note: Reader’s Digest held a nationwide contest to identify the Nicest Places in America—for which Good News Network was a judge. Meet the rest of the finalists here.

Just a few days before Christmas 2017, dozens gathered at the Nativity scene at the First Baptist Church in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, to march to nearby Market Square to hold a rally and a vigil to “welcome the stranger,” a Christian call to treat friends, neighbors, strangers and even enemies with love and compassion.

One of the people there was Yassin Terou, a refugee who came to Knoxville in 2011 and has since become a beloved local celebrity.

But not beloved by all.

A man in the crowd draped in an American flag was yelling at anyone who would listen that immigrants were preventing him from getting a job. When it was Terou’s turn to speak at the rally, he invited the man up on stage so they could hold the flag high together. When the man refused, Terou went into the crowd to find him so he could introduce himself and offer to buy him dinner so they could talk.

RELATED78-Year-old Bodybuilder Opens His Home Gym to Youngsters for Free So They Won’t Get Into Trouble

He also offered the man a job.

That’s because Terou is the owner and operator of Yassin’s Falafel House, which employs 30 people and has been open for the past four years.

“I always do that,” Terou told Reader’s Digest, “I always invite anyone who hates us to the store. I want them to know us more. When you break bread, you break hate.”

US Bans New Mining Claims on Public Land Near Yellowstone Park With Bipartisan Support

Dozens of wildlife species in the surrounding area of Yellowstone National Park will be protected thanks to a new ruling.

Earlier this week, U.S. Interior Secretary and former Montana congressman Ryan Zinke approved a 20-year ban on mineral mining in the public areas north of the historic park.

The ban was supported by a host of Montana businesses and organizations as a means of preserving the popular recreational areas, as well as protecting the pristine mountain landscape and the elk, bears, and wolves that frequent the area.

“I’m a pro-mining guy. I love hardrock [mining],” said Zinke, according to the Associated Press. “But there are places to mine and places not to mine.”

LOOKAfter Planting a Tree Every Day for 40 Years, Man Has Created Blossoming Forest on Barren Wasteland

The legislation takes a direct stance against the Lucky Minerals mining company after they drafted up two excavation plans to hunt for gold, silver, and minerals inside of the 47 square miles (122 square kilometers) of public land.

Though the ban does not affect the company’s pre-existing land claims or claims on private lands, supporters of the legislation say that the company’s inability to expand their mining onto the surrounding public lands for a more wide-scale excavation is a huge deterrent from proceeding.

Conservationists hope that, after the ban was approved with bipartisan support in Montana as an extension of a temporary ban issued by former president Barack Obama in 2016, they will be able to pass a permanent ban in the coming years.

Shop Has Given Away 142,000 Slices of Pizza, Continuing Dad’s Mission for the Homeless

This pizzeria may be small, but that hasn’t stopped them from giving away a lot of pizza to the local homeless population.

Just months after Mike and Jennifer Stevens opened up their Fargo, North Dakota pizza restaurant in 2015, they saw a homeless man sitting outside of a gas station for several hours at a time.

“My daughters and I were looking out of the window and saying should we get him something,” Jenny told TODAY Food. “We brought him a pizza. He was so thankful and so gracious. Then we ended up doing it again for a different person. And again for a different person. And again for another person.”

Their kindness did not stop at individual slices, however – one year later, the family realized that there were people going through the dumpster of the restaurant.

RELATEDAfter Serving 3 Million Meals in Puerto Rico, Chef Travels Ahead of Hurricane Florence to Feed Even More

So Mike put up a sign in the window reading: “To the person going through our trash for their next meal, you’re a human being and worth more than a meal from a dumpster. Please come in during operating hours for a couple of slices of hot pizza and a cup of water at no charge. No questions asked.”

Instead of giving away a couple slices, the family started giving away entire pizzas to anyone who asked. Even though Mike was diagnosed with leukemia, he spent the following months facilitating the restaurant’s partnership with a local homeless shelter.

The family would freeze dozens of pizzas for volunteers to pick up and deliver to the shelter. Then, they started working with two more homeless shelters.

Collectively, the family has given away over 142,000 slices of pizza, which is worth about $70,000. Even though Mike passed away from his battle with cancer back in December 2017, Jenny is continuing his mission by giving away more pies and raising money for the free food through GoFundMe.

“He really, really pursued this,” she told TODAY. “It’s a small thing that we can do to bring a big difference in their day and it’s just kept going. You have to come together to help each other out. We just do it because it seems like the right thing to do.”
