Blind Boy Receives Heartwarming Response in Braille From Nintendo

This fifth grader may be blind, but he loves playing video games.

Because of Hibiki’s visual impairment, he can only play certain games that utilize sound as an indicator of what’s happening. His favorite games are Nintendo’s four installments of the Rhythm Tengoku series.

That’s why Hibiki’s dad helped him to write a letter to Nintendo, politely thanking them for their groundbreaking work – and asking if they could make more Tengoku games.

“I am blind, but I’ve always wanted to play video games like everyone else,” wrote Hibiki. “But there aren’t many games I can play at all. The one game I can really play is Rhythm Tengoku. It’s the only game I can enjoy together with others, and I never lose at it. I’ve gotten perfect scores on all the versions on the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, Wii, and 3DS too.

The letter continued to say: “So I really, really want you to make more Rhythm Tengoku games. And it’s perfectly fine if you make them a little harder too! I think that there are a lot of other kids with visual impairments who want to play video games but can’t. So I’d love for you to develop more games for people with handicaps to enjoy playing with others.”

Eight days after Hibiki’s dad wrote the letter, they received two written responses from the company – one in ink, and one in braille.

The response read: “Thank you so much for sending us here at Nintendo your heartwarming letter. We are so happy to hear that you’ve perfected and enjoyed Rhythm Tengoku, Rhythm Tengoku Gold, Minna no Rhythm Tengoku, and Rhythm Tengoku The Best.

“We have passed on your letter to Nintendo’s development department. We want to keep making games that everyone can have fun playing, so thank you for your support.”

Hibiki and his father were so overwhelmed by the company taking the time to respond to his letter, the posted the collection of notes on Twitter for all to see, praising the compassion of Nintendo.

“My son Hibiki is blind and has perfectly cleared every game in the Rhythm Tengoku series, the only games he can play. He sent Nintendo a letter and they actually responded! Them sending such a sincere correspondence to just one person is truly divine customer service. Nintendo, we’re anxiously awaiting the next installment in the series!”

Tribe Donates 200 Defibrillators to Law Enforcement: “It’s about saving lives”

These law enforcement officers will be able to protect and serve better than ever before, thanks to their compassionate Native American neighbors.

The Snoqualmie Tribe of King County, Washington just donated 200 defibrillators to the King County Police Department and the Snoqualmie Police Department.

The donation comes after local police forces made a plea on the radio for defibrillator contributions following an incident where a police deputy suffered a heart attack while on patrol.

Snoqualmie Tribal Council Member Richard Zambrano overheard the plea and approached the tribe’s council about fulfilling the request – to which they agreed. Now, just about every patrol car in the county is equipped with a defibrillator.

“It’s huge. We never thought that we could get one source who was willing to spend a significant amount of money to provide these AED’s, so now almost every patrol car has an AED in their trunk, and that’s going to save lives,” Sheriff John Urquhart told KING5. “On a day to day basis we don’t really know what kind of call we’re going to get and often times, well, every day, we are dispatched with the fire department at the same time for a medical alert call and often times we get there first and if we can apply that AED right away we can save lives.”

Infertile Couples Might Finally Be Able to Have Kids Thanks to 100-Year-old Technique

Prospective parents longing for kids of their own may no longer have to spend thousands of dollars on IVF treatments, thanks to this 100-year technique for inducing pregnancies.

This new study tested the effects of an old medical treatment for increasing women’s fertility. The treatment, which involves flushing the fallopian tubes with an iodized poppy seed oil, actually revealed surprisingly positive results.

The experiment was conducted across 27 medical centers in the Netherlands and Australia with 1,119 infertile women. Half of the women were given water-based solutions to use on their systems, while the other half was given the oil-based solution. Scientists found that 40% of women who underwent the oil-based procedure became pregnant within the first six months of treatment, as opposed to only 29% in the water-based group.

“It was long believed that testing a woman’s fallopian tubes could have fertility benefits through ‘flushing out’ the kind of debris that hinders fertility. The reality is, we still don’t really understand why there is a benefit, only that there is a benefit from this technique, in particular for women who don’t present with any other treatable fertility symptoms,” says project leader Professor Ben Mol.

“Further research would need to be conducted into the mechanisms behind what we’re seeing. For now, and considering the technique has been used for 100 years without any known side-effects, we believe it is a viable treatment for infertility prior to couples seeking IVF.

RELATEDGood News For Pregnant Women Who Love Drinking Coffee

“Not only is there a known benefit, but this flushing procedure is also a fraction of the cost of one cycle of IVF. Considering that 40% of women in the oil-based group achieved a successful pregnancy, that’s 40% of couples who could avoid having to go through the huge costs and emotions associated with IVF treatment,” he says.

Coincidentally, Mol himself is a product of the procedure – although he didn’t find out about his unique heritage until after he began the study.

His mother, who had spent nine years during the 1960s trying to conceive a child, only became pregnant after she used the oil-based treatment. He now believes that it’s highly likely he – and his brother – are both the happy result.

Woman Births Twins as Surrogate for Sister Who Had 9 Miscarriages

Melissa Kayser was heartbroken when she was forced to realize that she couldn’t give birth – but luckily, her compassionate older sister volunteered to be her surrogate and bear her child.

The 33-year-old had endured nine miscarriages over the course of three years in her efforts to have children. After undergoing failed fertility treatments, doctors told her to find a surrogate.

That’s when Melissa’s 35-year-old sister Lisa Auten volunteered.

“I couldn’t stand watching Melissa go through loss after loss,” Lisa told Inside Edition. “She hurt so badly and she just wanted a child so bad. If I could help give her a family, then I was going to do it.”

After two of Melissa’s embryos were implanted in her sister, Lisa successfully gave birth to twin girls named Ashlynn and Tierney who recently turned 6 weeks old.

Under Nebraska parenting laws, Melissa will be able to legally adopt the twins when they turn 6 months old. As for Lisa, she still doesn’t want her own children and says she is content to be a fun-loving aunt, instead of a mother.

India Makes Moves Toward Sustainability and Less Pollution

Though India currently generates most of its power through coal-powered plants, the country has been making great strides implementing more environmentally-friendly initiatives.

For starters, according to the country’s new Union Budget for 2017, 7000 Indian railway stations are going to be converted to solar power.

In addition to the country operating the first ever airport powered entirely by solar energy, India is also attempting to make every single one of their cars electric by 2030.

In December, India broke the world record for most trees planted in a single day. The historic record previously held by Pakistan, which planted 830,000 saplings in 2013, now belongs to India after they planted 49.3 million throughout the nation.

In a recent move to cut pollution and emissions from coal-fired plants, the largest democracy in the world approved the construction of 10 new heavy water nuclear power plants, which, if operated safely, will offer a much cleaner form of energy for millions of homes.

This T-Shirt Monitors the Asthma Patient’s Breathing Without Any Wires

This “smart” t-shirt could be a huge breakthrough for people suffering from respiratory illnesses.

The light, comfortable shirt developed by researchers at the Université Laval monitors the wearer’s breathing through a tiny antenna in the center of the design. Simply by detecting the user’s motions, the shirt can record breathing patterns and send the data to a smart phone or computer.

The shirt can be used to diagnose or monitor anyone struggling with asthma, sleep apnea, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

RELATEDWoman Hailed for Inventing Foldable Paper Bicycle Helmet

“The T-shirt is really comfortable and doesn’t inhibit the subject’s natural movements,” says the technology’s lead developer professor Younes Messaddeq. “Our tests show that the data captured by the shirt is reliable, whether the user is lying down, sitting, standing, or moving around.”

You wouldn’t have to worry about it short-circuiting in the wash, either; the researchers tested the shirt’s durability by putting it through the wash – 20 different times. The antenna still proved resilient.

Though there is no clear release date for the technology, it seems fair to say that it is definitely one of the more stylish applications of medicine to date.

Dog Finds Missing Cat Hiding In the Floor 2 Months After House Fire

Christine Marr had become resigned to the fact that her cat Ringer probably perished in the family’s house fire two months ago – but thanks to her dog’s keen sense of smell, she learned that the cat had some of his nine lives left.

Christine and her husband took their dog Chloe to visit the remains of the charred home on Sunday. When they arrived, the pup began acting strangely.

For starters, Chloe was erratically sniffing all over the house’s framework. Then, she started dashing around the home and scratching at a certain spot on the floorboards.

WATCHDog Hailed as Hero After Bear Starts Chasing Humans

Bewildered, the couple tried to pull the dog away, but she kept returning to the same spot. Christine’s husband finally pulled the boards back and shined a flashlight into the hole below – then he heard a faint meow.

Assuming it was just a stray, they managed to coax the cat out with some food. But when they saw a telltale mark on the cat’s tail, they realized the miraculous fact that the boney, malnourished feline standing before them was Ringer.

Overwhelmed by their cat’s return, the couple rushed Ringer to a veterinarian in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

“My Mother’s Day miracle!!!” wrote Christine. “Not completely sure … how he ended up in this hole in the floor. He’s been down there for two months with no food and water. Very skinny but doing well … He has a feeding tube in his neck [and it] is going to be a slow process to reintroduce food but he is going to LIVE!”

Firefighters are especially confused by the discovery since they had already investigated the house’s remains looking for Ringer after the fire.

Regardless, the family is just thrilled to have their buddy back. Christine says that Chloe and Ringer were always very close companions when they lived together in that old house – so it made sense that she would be the one to find him.

You Might Soon Have a Chance to See the Most Valuable American Artwork, Thanks to Billionaire

This breathtaking painting has just launched Jean-Michel Basquiat into the annals of history as the most valued American artist to date – and museum-goers around the world will soon have the chance to see it for themselves.

This 1982 skull painting called Untitled was auctioned off on Thursday night for the most amount of money ever spent on an American work of art: a jaw-dropping $110.5 million.

The buyer was later revealed on social media to be Japanese billionaire and art patron Yusaku Maezawa.

“I am happy to announce that I just won this masterpiece,” says Maezawa. “When I first encountered this painting, I was struck with so much excitement and gratitude for my love of art. I want to share that experience with as many people as possible.”

The 44-year-old art tycoon, who has been a self-declared Basquiat zealot for years, plans on loaning the painting to museums around the world so that he can share the masterpiece’s beauty with enthusiasts everywhere.

The painting that was previously the most valued U.S. work was an Andy Warhol painting titled Silver Car Crash, which sold for $105.4 million – now, after this week’s auction, Untitled has not only become America’s most valued masterpiece, but it has also become the sixth most valued painting in the world.

Teacher Has Kept Petition for 61 Years as Memento of Student Kindness

After reading the heartwarming stories of Teacher Appreciation Week, Danny Beatty decided to submit his own touching tale of student kindness.

Danny started teaching at Anacortes High School of Anacortes, Washington in September 1955. According to a letter that the educator sent to the Seattle Times earlier this week, Danny maintained a course load of teaching six different classes, each consisting of up to 30 students.

When he received a draft notice from the U.S. army ordering his induction half way through the school year, however, it looked like Danny wouldn’t be teaching for very much longer.

RELATEDDaughter Fulfills Dad’s Last Wish With Side-Splitting Obituary

But his students weren’t going to let him go that easily; they immediately launched a petition that requested Danny be granted a delayed induction – at least until the end of the school year.

The delay was granted and Danny finished teaching the school year before being drafted into the Army for two years. He returned to his teaching position after his Army sentence and was an educator for 27 more years until his retirement.

But for the last 61 years, Danny has held onto the petition as evidence of the love and kindness showed to him by his students.

“I have kept in touch with some of the students over these many years. Two or three came back after college and taught with me,” Danny wrote to the Seattle Times. “One of the students is now a good friend of my wife and they get together almost every week for a walk. When the class had their 55th high school reunion two years ago, I sent them the enclosed letter. I went to the reunion and had a wonderful evening visiting with these former students.”

If that’s not a perfect example of Teacher Appreciation, then we don’t know what is.

Say Bye to Potholes: New Concrete Recipe Can Withstand Road Salt

Say goodbye to the bumps and holes plaguing your road – because this new concrete recipe can now withstand the deterioration of road salt.

With 900,000 tons of road salt annually dumped on Pennsylvania streets alone, taxpayers fork over thousands of dollars every year for the road repairs that inevitably ensue. That’s why a civil engineer from Drexel University started experimenting with new concrete recipes by using cast-off coal furnace materials.

Calcium chloride salt – also known as “deicer” – reacts to the calcium hydroxide in commonly used cement, thus causing degradation. Professor Yaghoob Farnam, however, started adding fly ash, slag, and silica fume materials that were cast off from furnaces.

RELATEDWorld’s Largest 3D Printer Makes Almost Zero-Cost Homes Out of Mud

By adding these new ingredients to the concrete, the rock showed no reaction to road salts.

“Many departments of transportation have reduced the amount of calcium chloride they use to melt ice and snow, even though it is very efficient at doing so  – because it has also been found to be very destructive,” Farnam said. “This research proves that by using alternate cementitious materials to make concrete, they can avoid the destructive chemical reaction and continue to use calcium chloride.”

Even more excitingly, this concrete recipe is cheaper and better for the environment.

CHECK OUTAll Disposable Plastic Has Been Banned From India’s Capital

“There is a great push to use these power industry byproducts because they take up space and some of them can be harmful to the environment,” Farnam said. “We believed that portions of the byproducts such as fly ash, slag and silica fume could be used to make concrete that is both durable – and cheaper, because it uses recycled materials.”

Though there is no clear timeline for when this revised mixture will hit the roads, Farnam plans on continuing his research and improving the ways in which his cement can withstand the elements.

Billionaire Gives Away Most of His Fortune to Help Save the Ocean

This man has spent most of his life benefitting from the abundance of the ocean – but now he believes the seas are in danger and wants to give back to the waves that provided so much to him.

Kjell Inge Røkke, a Norwegian billionaire who made his money from fisheries and off-shore oil investing, is using “the lion’s share” of his $2.7 billion fortune to build a mega yacht that could be a pollution game-changer.

The Research Expedition Vessel (REV) will be a 600-foot ship that will maneuver the ocean’s waters sucking up plastic waste. Capable of accumulating and recycling up to 5 tons of plastic per day, the REV will also double as a mobile laboratory for scientists to monitor and observe the ocean’s ecosystems.

RELATEDWorld’s Largest 3D Printer Makes Almost Zero-Cost Homes Out of Mud

Because the ship was built in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund, the REV has been designed to have the highest environmental standards. Once completed, it will be deemed the world’s largest yacht.

The REV will also be self-sustainable in terms of funding – the facilities can be reserved for private charters, accommodating up to 36 guests and 54 crew members. On a more daily basis, however, the ship will play host to 60 scientists and 40 crew members.

The scientists on board will have some of the most hi-tech research equipment available to them in order to fully observe the seas. Røkke hopes that the team will be able to utilize these facilities to discover new ways to assist and nourish the ocean’s ecosystems.

“I am a fisherman, and curious by nature,” says Røkke. “Resources in the oceans and on the seabed have provided significant value for society – and also for my family and myself. For this, I am very grateful.”

“However, the oceans are also under greater pressure than ever before from overfishing, coastal pollution, habitat destruction, climate change and ocean acidification, and one of the most pressing challenges of all, plasticization of the ocean. The need for knowledge and solutions is pressing.”

Supermarket Now Accepts Recyclables as Payment

One of the coolest ideas for a more sustainable world is coming from the most unlikely place.

The state of Acre is frequently used as the butt of Brazilian jokes for being one of the most remote areas of the country – but this region is also the home of the nation’s first ever supermarket that allows customers to purchase food by using recyclables as currency.

The market’s name is TrocTroc, which roughly translates to ”exchange” in English. The store offers consumers the option of exchanging plastic bottles and aluminum for any product sold in the store. Every two pounds of recyclables is worth roughly $0.15. If the recyclables are clean and compact – thus speeding up the recycling process – then the customer is given a 20% bonus.

Additionally, the store not only offers fruits, grains, and vegetables produced by regional farmers – it helps educate the locals on indigenous tribes as well.

The concept was designed by Marcelo Valadao, the president of the House of Indians Foundation. The organization fights for the preservation of indigenous cultures. The market, which is run by the Ashaninka tribe, reportedly helps locals to understand the value of their trading habits.

Photographer Offers to Take Free Graduation Photos for Kids Who Can’t Afford Them

Richard Wah doesn’t have any photos of his high school graduation – that’s because he didn’t have the money to pay for a photographer when he was a teenager.

Now that he’s 44 years old, however, he wants to give other kids the opportunities that he never had.

Richard, who works as a photographer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is offering free graduation photoshoots to youth who can’t afford them. All the grads have to do is send Richard an email, grab their cap and gown, and show up for the shoot.

The photographer has even hired a barber and two makeup artists to spruce up the grads’ look.

RELATEDTattoo Parlor Covers Up Racist Tattoos Free of Charge

The Philly resident first got the idea for the free photos when he was riding the public bus and saw a group of high school grads sporting caps and gowns – except none of them had any parents or family there to support them.

After snapping two pictures of the lonely looking teens, Richard took to Facebook with the offer.

“I don’t know what your story is and why you can’t afford them, but if you TRULY can’t afford high school graduation pictures and live in Philadelphia, we are allowing you to PAY WHATEVER YOU CAN AFFORD for high school graduation pictures,” Richard wrote on Facebook. “You made it, you have graduated high school, God loves you, and he knows your struggle.”

Since the photographer’s post has been shared 20,000 times on social media, he has reportedly been contacted by at least a dozen teens who are interested in his offer.

This Woman Has Saved Hundreds of Dogs From ‘Dumping Ground’

Hundreds of injured and abandoned pups have been rescued from the side of the road – and it’s all thanks to one woman and a dog who she found seven years ago.

Judy Obregon Russell was driving past a well known “dog dumping ground” in Fort Worth, Texas in 2010 when she spotted Mercy – a pit bull with several fractures in her leg – lying on the side of the road.

Judy picked up the hurt pup and took it to a veterinarian for treatment and care. Mercy, who has since been adopted and given a loving home, was only the beginning.

The dumping ground is due to the nearby dog fighting rings of Echo Lake. Since she first saw spotted Mercy all of those years ago, Judy has stopped by the same road spot every single day to rescue the dogs left behind.

Through her nonprofit, The Abandoned Ones, Judy has helped rescue and rehabilitate over 300 abandoned dogs. Her organization is also rallying for the installation of cameras in the Echo Lake area in order to stop the dog fighting rings.
