Toddler Takes Care Of 3-Day-Old Baby Cow When Calf’s Mother Dies

Toddler and Calf-Delta Rose Photography

This little girl may only be 2 years old, but she’s already the proud mamma and best friend of an orphaned baby calf.

A few weeks ago, Lacey Gray of Delta Rose Photography in Olive Branch, Mississippi asked her uncle if she could borrow his newborn calf for a photoshoot. Her uncle, saying that the mother wasn’t ready to be separated from her child just yet, politely declined.

The next day, however, Lacey’s uncle called back and said that the mother had fallen and passed away from the impact.

Lacey brought the calf home to live with her and her daughter Kinley, who immediately fell in love with the orphaned cow.

IKEA to Start Selling Homemade Textiles by Refugees

Ikea-Gerard Stolk, CC

The beloved Swedish furniture company plans to start selling textiles made by refugees, providing over 200 jobs for displaced individuals by 2019.

The workers will mostly be Syrian refugee women currently sheltered in Jordan. IKEA is working with local women’s organizations to ensure flexible working hours to accommodate employees supporting their families.

The products will be sold locally throughout Middle Eastern markets.

This is not the first time that the corporation has offered aid to asylum-seekers; IKEA has donated $33.3 million to lighting projects in afflicted regions, as well as upgraded 10,000 refugee tents into modular solar shelters.

In a letter addressed to the American IKEA workforce, USA Country Manager Lars Petersson explained why lending a hand to their displaced neighbors has never been more important.

“Over the past 35 years, I have lived in many countries where I have been an immigrant,” says Petersson. “As the Country Manager of IKEA in Italy, Japan, and now the US, I have witnessed firsthand the power of people working together: people from different backgrounds, nationalities, and religions uniting to achieve our vision of creating a better everyday life. This is why any proposal that would discriminate against a certain group of our customers or co-workers, or limit our ability to attract and retain diverse talent is so troubling.”

Computer Allows Paralyzed Patients to Communicate – And They’re Happy With Life

EEG Brain Computer-Wyss Center

A computer interface that can decipher the thoughts of people who are unable to communicate could revolutionize the lives of those living with completely locked-in syndrome, according to a new paper. Counter to expectations, the participants in the study reported being “happy,” despite their extreme condition.

Patients suffering from complete paralysis, but with preserved awareness, cognition, and eye movements and blinking are classified as having locked-in syndrome. If eye movements are also lost, the condition is referred to as completely locked-in syndrome.

In the trial, patients with completely locked-in syndrome were able to respond “yes” or “no” to spoken questions, by thinking the answers. A non-invasive brain-computer interface detected their responses by measuring changes in blood oxygen levels in the brain.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

Extensive investigations were carried out in four patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) – a progressive motor neuron disease that leads to complete destruction of the part of the nervous system responsible for movement.

The researchers asked personal questions with known answers and open questions that needed “yes” or “no” answers including: “Your husband’s name is Joachim?” and “Are you happy?.” They found the questions elicited correct responses in 70% of the trials.

Professor Birbaumer said: “The striking results overturn my own theory that people with completely locked-in syndrome are not capable of communication. We found that all four patients we tested were able to answer the personal questions we asked them, using their thoughts alone. If we can replicate this study in more patients, I believe we could restore useful communication in completely locked-in states for people with motor neuron diseases.”

MORESimple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

The question “Are you happy?” resulted in a consistent “yes” response from the four people, repeated over weeks of questioning.

Professor Birbaumer added: “We were initially surprised at the positive responses when we questioned the four completely locked-in patients about their quality of life. All four had accepted artificial ventilation in order to sustain their life, when breathing became impossible; thus, in a sense, they had already chosen to live. What we observed was that as long as they received satisfactory care at home, they found their quality of life acceptable. It is for this reason, if we could make this technique widely clinically available, it could have a huge impact on the day-to-day life of people with completely locked-in syndrome.”

In one case, a family requested that the researchers asked one of the participants whether he would agree for his daughter to marry her boyfriend ‘Mario’. The answer was “no,” nine times out of ten.

Professor John Donoghue, Director of the Wyss Center, said: “Restoring communication for completely locked-in patients is a crucial first step in the challenge to regain movement. The Wyss Center plans to build on the results of this study to develop clinically useful technology that will be available to people with paralysis resulting from ALS, stroke, or spinal cord injury. The technology used in the study also has broader applications that we believe could be further developed to treat and monitor people with a wide range of neuro-disorders.”

Asthma Drug Shows Promise For Treating Alcoholism

Alcohol-CC M_Shipp22

UCLA researchers have found that an anti-inflammatory drug primarily used in Japan to treat asthma could help people overcome alcoholism.

Their study is the first to evaluate the drug, ibudilast, as a treatment for alcoholism. Study participants were given either the drug (20 milligrams for two days and 50 milligrams for the next four) or a placebo for six consecutive days. After about a two-week break, those who took the drug were switched to a placebo for six days, and those who were taking the placebo were given ibudilast. The researchers found that the subjects’ craving for alcohol was significantly lower when they were taking the medication.

In addition, the participants’ reactions were measured after they were asked to hold and smell a glass of their preferred alcoholic beverage but not allowed to drink it. The subjects reported being in a better mood while they were taking ibudilast than when they were on the placebo.

RELATEDSimple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

The research evaluated 17 men and 7 women who, prior to the study, reported drinking alcohol an average of 21 days per month and drinking seven alcoholic beverages per day when they drank. On the sixth day of each phase of the study, participants received an intravenous dose of alcohol – the equivalent of about four drinks – to test how the medicine interacts with alcohol and whether it can be safely administered when people are drinking. (Participants stayed overnight at the UCLA Clinical and Translational Research Center, where the study was conducted.)

“We found that ibudilast is safe and well-tolerated,” said Lara Ray, a UCLA professor of psychology, director of the UCLA Addictions Laboratory and the study’s lead author. “This medication can be safely administered, including when people are drinking alcohol.”

Side effects from the drug, which included nausea and some abdominal pain, were mild, and none of the participants dropped out of the study. The research is published online by Neuropsychopharmacology, and will appear later in in the journal’s print edition.

CHECK OUT: Bar’s Simple But Clever Way of Combatting Sexual Assault

Researchers also evaluated the drug’s efficacy by looking at how well and how quickly participants could recover from a stressful situation. When the study began, the researchers asked participants to describe sources of stress in their lives. On the fifth day of each phase the study — when the participants were taking ibudilast and again when they were taking the placebo – researchers discussed those situations with the participants. The subjects’ moods improved much more quickly after hearing about their own stressful situations when they were taking ibudilast than when they received the placebo.

The treatment seemed to especially help those in the study who had depressive symptoms, which are common in heavy drinkers of alcohol. The drug appears to reduce the pleasurable effects of alcohol.

Chronic alcohol consumption elevates brain inflammation in animals, and earlier research showed that ibudilast was effective in reducing rats’ alcohol consumption. But it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that it would also be effective in humans, Ray said.

MORESimple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

For one thing, other drugs that have shown promise in rats caused too many negative side effects in humans. That’s a common problem when medications tested on animals are then evaluated for human use; Ray said that many medications that are effective in animal studies ultimately fail to help people — a phenomenon she called the “valley of death” of pharmaceutical development.

Ray, whose laboratory studies the causes of and possible treatments for drug and alcohol addiction, said testing new treatments for alcoholism is critical because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved only four treatments for alcoholism, and they have been only modestly effective.

Although the new study is promising, further clinical trials are needed, said Ray, who is also a member of the UCLA Brain Research Institute. Ibudilast is not currently available as a treatment for alcoholism.

Ray plans to test the drug on heavy drinkers who expressly want to quit drinking. (Those in the current study were not trying to quit.) She also plans to study how ibudilast reduces brain inflammation.

Tennessee to Become Only State Offering Free Community College For Adults

Governor Haslam-CC USDA

Tennessee is already revered for providing free community college to recent high school graduates – but now, Governor Haslam is pushing for their program to include adults as well.

During the seventh State of the State address to the General Assembly, the Governor introduced the Tennessee Reconnect Act: which, if approved, would make Tennessee the first American state to offer all citizens – both high school students and adults – the chance to earn a post-secondary degree or certificate free of tuition and fees.

WATCHSchool Run by Inner City Students Has Near-Perfect Graduation Rate

The expansion, which aims to provide 55% of the state’s 6.6 million citizens by 2025, has received enthusiastic bi-partisan support. The program, known as the Tennessee Promise, also doesn’t cost the taxpayers a dime since it receives its funding from Federal Pell Grants and state lottery money.

“Just as we did with Tennessee Promise, we’re making a clear statement to families: wherever you might fall on life’s path, education beyond high school is critical to the Tennessee we can be,” Haslam said. “At the end of the day, there is no higher potential for providing more opportunity for our citizens than increasing access to high quality education. And the point is, we’re doing it while maintaining discipline and responsibility to the taxpayer – keeping taxes and debt low and saving for when the economy ultimately slows.”

Simple Breath Test Could Save Millions of People From Cancer

scurit routire verification alcoolemie souffler l thylotest

A test that measures the levels of five chemicals in the breath has shown promising results for the detection of cancers of the oesophagus and stomach.

Together, stomach and oesophageal cancer account for around 1.4 million new cancer diagnoses each year worldwide. Both tend to be diagnosed late, because the symptoms are ambiguous, meaning the five-year survival rate for these two types of cancer is only 15%.

The new research, involving more than 300 patients, showed that the test could diagnose cancer with an overall accuracy of 85%.

RELATEDSimple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

Dr Sheraz Markar, an NIHR Clinical Trials Fellow from Imperial College London, told the Congress: “At present the only way to diagnose oesophageal cancer or stomach cancer is with endoscopy. This method is expensive, invasive and has some risk of complications.

“A breath test could be used as a non-invasive, first-line test to reduce the number of unnecessary endoscopies. In the longer term this could also mean earlier diagnosis and treatment, and better survival.”

The trial was based on the results of previous research that suggested differences in the levels of specific chemicals (butyric, pentanoic and hexanoic acids, butanal, and decanal) between patients with stomach or oesophageal cancer and patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms without cancer. The new research aimed to test whether this ‘chemical signature’ that seemed to typify cancer could be the basis of a diagnostic test.

MOREBold Trials to Kill Vicious Cancer Type is So Successful, FDA Will Fast Track to Patients

In the new study, the research team collected breath samples from 335 people at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust; University College London Hospital; and the Royal Marsden Hospital, London. Of these, 163 had been diagnosed with stomach or oesophageal cancer and 172 showed no evidence of cancer when they had an endoscopy.

All the samples were analyzed with a technique called selected ion flow-tube mass spectrometry, which is able to accurately measure small amounts of different chemicals in mixtures of gases such as breath.

Researchers measured the levels of the five chemicals in each sample to see which ones matched to the ‘chemical signature’ that indicated cancer.

CHECK OUTAfter Marrying On Her ‘Deathbed,’ This Bride Made a Miraculous Recovery After Quitting 1 Food

The results showed that the test was 85% accurate overall, with a sensitivity of 80% and a specificity of 81%. This means that not only was the breath test good at picking up those who had cancer (sensitivity), it was also good at correctly identifying who did not have cancer (specificity).

Dr Markar said: “Because cancer cells are different to healthy ones, they produce a different mixture of chemicals. This study suggests that we may be able detect these differences and use a breath test to indicate which patients are likely to have cancer of the oesophagus and stomach, and which do not. However, these findings must be validated in a larger sample of patients before the test could be used in the clinic.”

Over the next three years, the researchers will continue with a larger trial, using the test with patients who are being given an endoscopy for gastrointestinal symptoms but not yet diagnosed with cancer. This will assess the ability of the test to pick up cases within a group that is likely to contain only a small percentage of cancers.

The team is also working on breath tests for other types of cancer, such as colorectal and pancreatic, which could be used as first-line tests in general practice surgeries.

Dog Chained Up For 15 Years Finds New Home Thanks to Ricky Gervais (WATCH)

Happy Bear the Dog-Youtube

Bear the dog may have had a mostly unhappy life, but thanks to comedian and television star Ricky Gervais, he’s off to to live in a loving home for the rest of his days.

Having spent 15 years chained up to a dog house in a Suffolk County, New York backyard, doing his best to survive harsh winters with little to no care, a call to the animal rescue group Guardians of Rescue helped him find freedom.

So on Friday, when Gervais was supposed to be doing an interview with Good Morning America about his new film David Brent: Life On The Road, the actor used his platform to make a heartfelt plea for someone to adopt Bear.

He was chained up for 15 years.”

The producer of the show told the viewers to send them a message on Twitter if they were interested in adopting the pup.

“Give him a life. He’s so loving but he’s had no life. Give him two years’ bucket list. Give him love.”

Finally yesterday, Gervais posted a selfie of him and the rescue hound announcing that Bear had been successfully adopted.

Since he published the ad on January 19th, it has been viewed over 80,000 times. Social media users have started the hashtag #I’llFishWithRay and extended offers of friendship from across the country.

Following the outpouring of support, however, Ray has apparently finally found a local fishing mate in a similar social situation who will accompany him to the water later this week.

The identity of the fishing friend has not yet been revealed, however the internet community is rejoicing the success of the pensioner’s search.
