Millions of “Shade Balls” Added to Calif Reservoirs to Stop Evaporation -Video

shade-balls-Los Angeles screenshot Washington Post

It’s a whole new ballgame in California, where cities are trying any idea they can think of to conserve water during the state’s historic drought.

In Los Angeles, the city’s main reservoir is now covered in 96 million black plastic balls. The “shade balls” are weighted down with ballast inside to keep them from blowing away. They float just at the surface, absorbing sunlight and keeping the water below from evaporating.WATER-FX-YouTube-solar-array-640px

The city’s Water and Power Department figures the balls will save about 300 million gallons of precious water every year for the city. Shielded by the floating spheres, the water is also less susceptible to algae, bacterial growth, and chemical reactions in the chlorine.

“This is a blend of how engineering really meets common sense,” Marcie Edwards, the department’s general manager said at a news conference before the release.Ten_Mile_River_in-California-CC-David-Eppstein

California Residents Slash Water Use, Exceeding All Expectations

California officials have been testing the innovative tactic for several years now, using the plastic balls on other reservoirs in the central and southern parts of the state. Probably not the ball pits your kids would prefer, but helping put a dent in California’s long dry spell.

Wild Baby Kangaroo Still Comes Home to Hug His Teddy Bear After Release

Kangaroo Hug teddy Gillian Abbott released

After they leave the nest, parents always hope their kids will come back and visit. Even when that kid is a kangaroo.

KangarooHug 2 Timothy Beshara releasedAustralian mom and wildlife rehabilitator Gillian Abbot rescued this baby roo when it was two months old and raised the orphan, giving it a teddy bear to cuddle with.

Now almost fully grown, Doodlebug, as he was named, is making another life transition, what animal-rescue folks call a “soft return” to the wild.

He comes and goes as he pleases now, and every time the eastern gray kangaroo returns to his homestead, he empties the food bowl and hugs his teddy– just like old times.

The family shared a photo of the young marsupial holding tight to the teddy bear, which has been thoughtfully tied up to dangle at a huggable height.baby otter bottle-released-Shedd Aquarium:Brenna Hernandez

Africa Celebrates One Year Without A Single New Case of Polio

Africa-Polio vaccine-UNAMID-released

August 11 marked one year since the last wild polio case was detected anywhere on the entire continent of Africa.

Although it does not yet merit an official polio-free certification, the milestone reminds everyone at the United Nations and the Kick Polio Out of Africa Campaign of the important progress toward eradication.Fadumo Dayib-Harvard-Photo

“Globally, we are on the verge of totally eradicating a disease for only the second time in history,” remarked Peter Crowley, the head of the UN Children Fund’s (UNICEF) Polio unit, on his blog. “As we approach the General Assembly’s endorsement of the Sustainable Development Goals, what a wonderful time to be able to encourage the global community to set ambitious goals and to know that such goals can be met – if we believe.”

Polio is a virus transmitted by person-to-person contact and spread mainly through the faecal-oral route or, less frequently, by contaminated water or food, and multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and can cause paralysis.

The Couple From Woodstock LP Cover is Still Married 46 Years After Concert

Woodstock-couple-Courtesy Bobbi and Nick Ercoline

Bobbi And Nick Ercoline were girlfriend and boyfriend 46 years ago this weekend, when they decided to attend the Woodstock music festival being held on a farm in Bethel, New York.

During a serene moment, a photographer captured their picture and it ended up as the cover art for the Soundtrack album to one of the most historic concerts of all time.

With the festival’s anniversary this week, we wanted to report the good news that this couple is still together. They were married two years after Woodstock, and have two grown children.

“I think the further we get from the original event the more meaningful it becomes, the more we realize how phenomenal it was: all those people coming together with no violence, just peace, love and sharing,” Bobbi told Seattle P-I in 2009. “Forty years later it’s just remarkable that it could have occurred.”

Environmentalists are re-establishing an oyster colony at Barnegat Bay in New Jersey.

“The goal of the colony is to help improve water quality in the struggling bay,” reports the AP. “The shellfish naturally filter out pollutants and impurities.”

“But there’s another benefit as well: hardening the shoreline against devastating storms like Superstorm Sandy.”

The American Littoral Society, a nonprofit group that protects coastline ecosystems, emptied bags of oyster shells on a newly created reef in the bay two weeks ago, beginning the last chapter of their oyster restoration project.

New Diplomacy Dawns in Cuba as U.S. Embassy Reopens After 54 Years

cuba-US-flag-raised-StateGov-640px

Fifty-four years ago, the United States broke diplomatic relations with Cuba, and three young Marine guards completed a final duty in Havana: lowering their country’s flag before returning home.

On Friday, US Secretary of State John Kerry watched as those same three Marines – Larry Morris, Mike East and Jim Tracy – helped raise the flag once again over the newly re-opened U.S. Embassy.

Kerry’s visit, the first by a U.S. Secretary of State in 70 years, comes nine months after President Obama announced a new approach to relations with Cuba.

“It is an approach based on the ties that bind our people, the interests shared by our governments, and the mutual respect that should characterize relations between two proud nations – even when our policies collide,” said Kerry in a blog post written on his flight to Cuba.

Three weeks ago, the two nations reestablished formal relations and a Cuban embassy was reopened in Washington, DC.

“In Cuba and throughout Latin America, we are seeing the diplomatic benefits of reversing a policy that divided us from the Cuban people and isolated us in the hemisphere and the world,” he explained.

“Whether we are working to prevent oil spills off the coast of Florida, interdict narcotics flows in the Caribbean, or champion democratic values, an engaged America will be a stronger and more influential America.”

Though the two governments remain deeply divided, visitors are flocking to the island now, many of them Cuban-Americans, bringing valuable tourism dollars. Airbnb rentals are providing income directly to Cuban homeowners.

“They are supporting self-employed entrepreneurs, the fastest-growing sector of Cuba’s economy, some half a million strong, who will be so important to the country’s future,” added Kerry.

Two decades ago, Kerry also helped normalize relations with another of America’s former foes, Vietnam. He believes the same benefits that flowed to that Asian country will eventually transfer to the Cuban people.

“Last week, I returned to Vietnam to find a country that is market-oriented, economically vibrant and friendly to the United States. Its people are also freer — with greater access to information and more autonomy over their lives.”

Booming Wind and Solar Power Has Slashed Europe’s CO2 Emissions

Wind Farm Wales cc Statkraft

Windmills and solar panels are helping to clean the air in Europe – and causing greenhouse gas emissions to plummet.

Renewable energy in place of dirty coal plants have slashed CO2 emissions by 8.8% each year from 2010 through 2012– the most recent year for which United Nations numbers are available. Solar and wind power accounted for almost two-thirds of the reduced emissions. Other renewable sources, such as biodiesel, accounted for 36% of the cuts.

Five nations – Germany, Sweden, France, Italy, and Spain – account for two-thirds of the reduced emissions. The 28 EU member countries combined spewed a billion fewer tons of CO2 per year in 2012, than they did in 1990.

CHECK Out: This Lamp Light Burns All Night Powered Only by a Glass of Saltwater

The success is encouraging governments in the EU to set even higher standards for themselves.

When European countries joined 37 other industrialized nations in signing the first-ever climate agreement–the Kyoto Protocol in 1997–they promised to produce 20% of their energy through wind and solar power by 2020. The EU has already reached 15%, and its ministers, now confident that they will exceed the original goal, have raised the bar to a 40% total by 2030.

Wind energy accounted for a third of all new generating capacity in Europe last year and is expected to produce as much as 17% of the EU’s electricity by 2020. Solar power is expected to produce another 12% – eliminating the need for at least 5.6 million tons of oil per year.

Son’s Essay Moves Stranger to Buy Family a Wheelchair-Ready Van

Michelle Garn family van Facebook Garn

A Michigan mother was stunned when she got a phone call telling her a complete stranger was buying her a new wheelchair accessible van–and it’s all thanks to her son’s essay praising his deserving mom.

Michelle Garn had been struggling to start her van so she could get it to a mechanic for more repairs, even though it was a rust-bucket, 15-years-old, and falling apart.turkish wedding couple serve food-youtube

Since a stroke 13 years ago, the mother of three has been confined to a wheelchair and, lately, has tried to come up with the money for a new vehicle that would accommodate her physical disability.

Wheelchair accessible van Facebook Michelle GarnHer son Brendan had entered an essay contest during National Mobility Awareness Month because first prize was a new, wheelchair-accessible van. He didn’t win, but because he placed in the finals, the local newspaper printed a story about him and his mother’s plight.

That story touched the heart of retired businessman Tom Kolassa.

“I wanted to tell her, ‘You didn’t win this contest, but you are first place in somebody’s heart,’” Kolassa told the Lansing State Journal.

Retired from the insurance industry in Battle Creek, Michigan, he worked with a local dealership to buy Garn a one-year-old van with just 15,000 miles on it. Garn still couldn’t believe it as the man delivered it to her home. It was the first time they’d ever met — and there wasn’t a dry eye between them.

When this great-grandmother found out kids in her county could go hungry over the summer, she decided to feed all 200 of them — every day.

The school district in Gray’s Harbor County, Washington, didn’t have money to provide free or reduced price meals to low income kids over the summer. So Phyllis Shaughnessy, rounded up volunteers, did some fundraising, and got the Green Lantern Tavern to donate kitchen space.

“Friends for Life” Connects Caring People To Lonely Seniors In Need

In the United States, more than 11 million senior citizens live alone.

Everyone should have someone in their world who cares, and that’s what our group Friends For Life is all about: people taking time to care for the elderly living alone, or in nursing homes who have no visitors. We demonstrate that people care.

friends for life inez with senior 1 facebookIn Waco, Texas, we serve as legal guardians for people who are not able to make decisions for themselves. We find them safe places to live, make sure they are clothed and fed–even meet them at the emergency room at 2 a.m., if needed.

It all started while I was visiting my father in the hospital one day when I heard a woman screaming.  I went to see what was wrong and found a woman who was close to ninety years old.  She was crying.  She said, “I’m dying and I don’t want to die alone, please don’t leave me!”

She was sick, in a hospital 200 miles away from her nearest family, and no one was coming to see her.  She was convinced this meant she was dying, because if she were going to live, her family would still be coming to see her. I gave her a stuffed animal and flowers and read from my Bible to her.  Mostly, I listened to her. She decided I wouldn’t be doing all that if she were dying. In a short time, she got well and went home.

friends for life inez with senior 2 facebook

After I visited her, the nurses asked, “Since you visited this lady that you didn’t know, would you go see a lady on the fourth floor who is all alone?”

So, I also brought her a stuffed animal, visited with her, and she got well enough to go home.  Then they asked, “There is someone on the second floor who has no family, could you check on her, too?”

I kept thinking that the help they needed already existed – somewhere. I learned that over half of the people in nursing home never have a single visitor. I also learned that over half of the elderly people who were living alone, needing help, weren’t getting help at all – from anyone.

The first year and every year after that trying to meet those needs has been challenging. One day, in our early days, I received a call from a nursing home asking me to make corsages for the 220 women who were in their facility. They explained what a sad holiday Mother’s Day is for all the moms who never had children, for all whose children had passed away, and for those whose children didn’t come to see them that day.Men Pay medical Bills submitted credit Bess Adler Metro

Two Former Debt Collectors Are Now Helping People Pay Their Medical Bills

I said, “I’ll do it.”  I didn’t have a flower or money to buy flowers or any idea how to make a corsage.  And, the Friday before Mother’s Day, I wasn’t any further along, but I ended up going to a garden shop and gathering up everything I could find that looked like it could be turned into a corsage.

I walked to the cash register trying to figure out how to tell the man I didn’t have any money.  When I got there he said, “are you Inez Russell with Friends for Life?”  I said, “Yes.”

He said, “There is someone looking for you.”

I told him I didn’t think that was possible because no one knew I was there. friends for life volunteer and old man facebook

He took me to meet a lady who handed me $40. She told me that when she got up that morning she had asked God who to give that money to and He told her to come find me.

When I went back to the cash register, the man handed me a receipt for $39.94!

On another day, an elderly man called me to tell me his birthday would be the next day.

I asked him what he was going to get for his birthday and he said, “Nothing. I never get anything for my birthday.”

I said, “Well, if you were going to get something for your birthday, what would you want it to be?”

“100-piece puzzles and salmon croquettes. Do you have any salmon croquettes?”

I recruited volunteers to go get 100-piece puzzles and, I found an elderly widow who loved to cook to make salmon croquettes.

Rate of Uninsured Hits New Low as More Americans Get Health Coverage

medical exam-CC-COMSALUD

A new study shows more Americans have health insurance than ever before.

According to the latest quarterly Gallup poll, the rate of uninsured adults is down to 11.4 percent.

That number represents an almost 5-percent drop since the Affordable Care Act mandate took effect at the start of 2014, when an estimated 16% of Americans over 18 years old were not covered.

In a study released last month by the Journal of the American Medical Association, more than a half million adults reported “significant” improvements in affordable health insurance, access to doctors and medications since the last two annual open enrollment sessions.Garbage Insurance Clinic-cardboard-youtube

In Indonesia People Can Trade Trash for Free Health Care

The Gallup study showed the biggest decline in uninsured rates was among those earning less than $36,000 per year. In 2013, nearly 31% of this group were living without health coverage. That number has dropped to around 21%.

The number of Hispanics without health care coverage dropped to 29%, a vast improvement from the nearly 39% who said they were uninsured in 2013. Black Americans saying they were uninsured declined from around 21% in 2013 to 12% in the latest quarter.

Because so many college-age adults are covered by family insurance plans, 16% of those ages 18-24 are not covered, down from 23.5% two years ago.

Town Installs Outdoor Refrigerator so Locals Can Feed the Hungry in Spain

People in the Basque town of Galdakao, Spain, put their leftovers in the fridge — not just the ones in their homes, but the one on the street, too.

The city of about 30,000 created the country’s first communal refrigerator to help the hungry.

Alvaro Saiz, who used to run a food bank in Galdakao, came up with the idea for the “Solidarity Fridge” during the recession when he saw people going through trash bins looking for food. He figured there had to be a better way for restaurants and even individuals to give away unused food.bangladesh farming - Shykh Seraj

Bangladesh Slashes Hunger Rates in Half, Becomes Model for Rest of World

He went to the mayor with his plan to put a refrigerator on the street where people could deliver leftovers and the hungry could take what they needed.

“When he came to city hall with this idea, I thought it was both crazy and brilliant!” Mayor Ibon Uribe told NPR. “How could I say no?”

It took some legal research and money, but the city finally came up with $5,500 for the project and changed the law to keep the city from being sued if people get sick. No raw meat or eggs are allowed and food has to be thrown out after four days, but people who maintain the Solidarity Fridge says nothing lasts more than a few hours.

Padres Baseball Team Keeps Disabled Pitcher on Payroll for 20 Yrs to Give Insurance

Matt LaChappa-baseball-disabled-MLB-vid-screenshot

When folks say a ball team has a lot of heart, they usually mean that, win or lose, the players give it their all, every single time. For the past 20 years, though, the San Diego Padres have been showing their heart through the quiet stroke of a pen in the back office.

The Major League Baseball team has gone on renewing the contract of beloved former pitcher Matt LaChappa, year after year, decade after decade, even though the kid never threw a ball in the big leagues. They wanted to keep providing the medical insurance he would need.cop mows lawn Downtown Kalamazoo Cops facebook

In the spring of 1996, LaChappa was a 20-year-old left-hander with a sharp-breaking curveball—and the Padres’ best pitching prospect. The team had drafted him straight out of high school in Lakeside, California, a couple years earlier.

matt_LaChappa-bb-card-small-150x150But on a cool April evening, while warming up as a relief pitcher in a minor league game, LaChappa was felled by a massive heart attack. Although help came quickly for the athlete barely out of his teens, he suffered debilitating brain damage and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.

It could have spelled the end of LaChappa’s association with the San Diego Padres, but no.

“Matt LaChappa is a Padre for life,” said Priscilla Oppenheimer, who for 25 years was the team’s director of minor-league operations. She was the one who asked the question: Was there any reason they couldn’t just go on paying LaChappa, renewing his basic minor-league contract, complete with medical benefits?

“It was the right thing to do, the right and proper thing,” Oppenheimer told MLB.com during a game honoring LaChappa in April. “He’s such a good kid… and I’m so happy the Padres have kept it up after all these years.”wheelchair swing Facebook SmarterEveryDay

The team further honored LaChappa a couple summers ago by renovating a Little League field near Lakeside where the young pitcher used to play and renaming it Matt LaChappa Field.

In April, with his brother at one shoulder and his nurse at the other, LaChappa stood and greeted the Padres crowd, grinning broadly. Though still sharp as a tack, according to family members, he doesn’t speak and has only limited use of his limbs. But, come game time he is usually found—whether in a VIP suite at the Padres’ stadium or back home on the Barona Indian Reservation where he grew up and now lives—ready to cheer, wearing the team cap on his head and holding a baseball in his left hand.
