Mexico City Turns Garbage Dump Into Community Gardens

tomato.jpg21 community gardens are part of the mayor's bid to improve Mexico City's quality of life.  Since Mexicans took to the streets last January after the price of tortillas doubled, money and materials for  gardens have been donated to transform what used to be a garbage dump. Now the smell of old milk cartons and beer cans has been replaced with the fresh scent of cilantro. (The Christian Science Monitor)
 

Abandoned NYC Rail Line Being Remade as Park

In a desolate corner of Manhattan's West Side as wrecking balls loomed, a campaign will triumph in turning a 13-mile-long elevated railway track into a park. A spokesperson for the city Planning Commission, says the project will attract tourists and provide for affordable housing in the area. (AP story in Contra Costa Times)
