In ‘World First’, Ultra-Cheap Printable Solar Panels Are Launched in Australia

An inexpensive new kind of solar power has just been launched in Australia and it could signal the start of a groundbreaking new market for renewable energy.

Professor Paul Dastoor has created organic solar panels that can be printed using conventional printers.

By using electronic inks that are printed onto sub-millimeter thin plastic sheets, the panels can be produced for less that $10 per square meter and installed by a few people within a single work day.

Since the University of Newcastle professor developed the panels back in May 2017, they are now being tested in a 6-month pilot installation on a pallet repair facility in Australia.

The 200-square-meter installation on the building is the first commercial application of the technology in Australia, and most likely the rest of the world. If the pilot is proven to be efficient, the solar tech will likely move into the more widely-available commercial market within the next few years.

According to The Guardian, the development of such a cheap and easy-to-install material could make signing up for energy accounts as easy as signing up for a new phone plan.

“This is the first commercial uptake of printed solar in Australia, most likely the world,” said Dastoor. “It’s an historic step in the evolution of this technology and another example of private enterprise and community leading the charge in the adoption of renewables.”

“Our printed solar cells are now considered to be at the ‘top of the technology readiness tree’,” says Dastoor. “Those working in technology development use a NASA developed Technology Readiness Level or ‘TRL’ system to determine how evolved our solutions are, with 1 being the lowest and 9 the highest. We are now rated TRL 8 and essentially considered ‘green lit’.”

These Firefighters Nursed an Exhausted Hummingbird Back to Health

These heroes aren’t just limited to fighting fires – they are also being hailed for rescuing a tiny hummingbird.

Firefighters from the Richburg Fire Rescue in South Carolina found the little critter outside of their fire station earlier this week.

According to the department’s Facebook page, the bird was lying tired and dehydrated on the pavement.

The crew members filled a bottle cap with water and stayed with the animal until it had drank enough water and was strong enough to stand and fly away.

“You can teach almost anyone how to be a firefighter, a medic or just about anything imaginable. For every single one of her pregnancies, Jenny James-Prothro has chosen to learn the gender of her children before their births – but after her father, Charles, passed away one year ago, she decided to honor her dad by waiting until the birth for the big reveal.

Charles had always preferred to be surprised by his grandchildren’s genders at birth, so it seemed like an appropriate homage to his memory. At 6 months into the pregnancy, however, continuing pressure to learn the baby’s gender finally pushed Jenny to change her mind.

She opted to learn the gender, but on one condition: she asked her 43-year-old husband James to make the big reveal in a creative way.

James then went above and beyond the call of duty by editing voicemail clips of Jenny’s father.

For a video that has already been viewed millions of times, James filmed his excited wife holding a speaker. When the speaker’s recording starts playing, she hears her husband’s voice setting up the big surprise.

“Jenny, this is the most special, creative way that I could think of to tell you the sex of our child,” says James’s recorded voice. “But I couldn’t do it without a little help.”

The recording then cuts to the voice of Jenny’s father – and the shocked mother can barely contain her emotions.

“Hello Jenny, this is your father!” says the recording. “I want to let you know that it is a girl. It is a girl. I love yah, bye bye!”

Jenny later took to Facebook so she could praise James for the tearful surprise, saying that she was “truly blessed beyond measure with the best and most creative hubby ever.”

Watch What Happens When Foster Teens See the Ocean for the First Time

There are so many things we may take for granted – like going to the beach, playing in the surf, and feeling the sand between our toes.

For these foster kids and orphans who had never been to the beach before last month, just seeing the ocean for the first time became a truly emotional experience.

Arizona law makes it difficult to take foster kids out of state; but aiming to inspire disadvantaged teens, two organizations assumed liability for the trip so the youngsters could spend the weekend at La Jolla Shores in San Diego, California.

The trip was facilitated by a partnership between Reef, an apparel company dedicated to cleansing the world’s beaches of pollution, and Urban Surf 4 Kids, an organization that uses water sports and beach trips to help foster kids heal.

App That Rounds Payments to Nearest Dollar Helps Users Pay Off $1 Million in Student Debt

An app that allows students to nickel and dime their way out of debt has just paid off $1 million worth of student loans.

ChangEd is a mobile app that rounds up a user’s everyday purchases to the nearest dollar. For instance, if a person is buying a cup of coffee for $2.45 with the credit or debit card that is linked to the app, ChangEd will round the payment up to $3 and then squirrel away the extra $0.55 cents to an account insured by the FDIC.

When these small amounts of change eventually pile up to $100, the app then applies the money to the user’s student loan debt.

The Chicago-based startup was featured on Shark Tank and backed by Mark Cuban.

“These spare change roundups are having a powerful impact on the repayment path for our members,” said ChangEd CEO Nick Sky. “We’re helping give people years of their life back without having to think about it.”

According to the company’s website, the average $37,000 student loan can end up costing over $60,000 if the student sticks to making the minimum payments every month. With the help of the app, they can save up to $14,000 on their debt in interest costs by using the average amount of spare change from purchases. The app also claims that it can knock up to 6 years off of a student’s repayment term.

Heated Argument With Starbucks Manager Takes Unexpected Turn Towards Friendship and Kindness

Most people don’t take too kindly to being yelled at in an argument – but this heated discussion had an unexpected happy ending.

Ken Wallace regularly goes to the Starbucks in Nashville, Tennessee to grade papers and enjoy the soothing atmosphere. One morning when he went to the café, however, he noticed that something was wrong.

A black man was in the store’s parking lot yelling at Leonessa Ward, the general manager of the Starbucks.

“I had reports that he was asking of money, and so when I went out there, I asked him, ‘Hey sir, are you asking our customers for money?’ At that point, he became very upset with me,” Ward told WSMV.

The man said that he had locked his keys in his car and he did not have the money to hire a locksmith. He was upset because he didn’t want people to think that he was “out there begging for money like a vagrant.”

Wallace, who is also a black man, approached the duo in hopes that he could help to mediate the argument and ease the tensions, especially in light of what happened at a Starbucks earlier this summer – but what occurred next surprised everyone.

Amidst the confrontation, Ward went inside to call upper management to ask how to handle the situation.

“She came out and said to him, ‘I’ve gotten permission from corporate, we’ll pay to open your car,” Wallace recalled. “‘We just want you to know, if you think we’re attacking you, we’re not.’ She distinctly said, I’ll never forget these words – ‘that’s not who we are.’ He just looked down and wiped his eyes and (said), ‘Ma’am, if you would allow me the opportunity to compose myself, I’d like to come inside and apologize to the lady that I yelled at.’”

The general manager then bought the man breakfast and chatted with him for 30 minutes before hugging the man, calling him a friend, and saying that he was free to come back any time.

Wallace called it one of the most powerful experiences of his life.

“You are only going to move misconceptions away it you get together and get to know one another and interact with one another,” said Wallace.

After a summer of late nights hanging out with friends, and laid back mornings doing whatever you want, it’s time to get back on a school schedule.

In today’s society, we place a lot of pressure on ourselves to be the perfect parent and to be ready when school starts. This might include scrolling through Pinterest to find the newest and cutest ways to pack a lunch for little Tommy—and we can’t forget the fall clothing and school supplies. How many glue sticks and tissues again?

Yet, we never think of sleep. Why is that? Without healthy sleep, there is no health. That is the foundation, the building block, for everything else.

With constant opportunities to be visually entertained for 24 hours a day, it’s no wonder that, as bedtime approaches, so many of us have trouble shutting off our brains. Creating a relaxing environment, with dim lights and an ambient sound will assist the body to naturally want to sleep.

There are 2 simple actionable steps you can implement tonight to make morning wake-ups for school easier and bedtime a breeze. The first step is to use technology properly.

I know, I know – you’re thinking, “Wait, technology is bad for sleep. It says so in all the papers and Google findings.” Yes, you are correct. Technology that emits blue light is known to suppress your melatonin levels (sleep hormone) drastically. But you can use tech to your advantage when using it properly.

There are some apps on the market which contain meditations, sleep stories, and simple, calming sounds for the bedtime routine. I use the sleep stories and meditations from an app called “Calm” and for my kids, they love the app “Moshi Twilight”. When toddlers and kids try to stall bedtime, and you’ve already read your own stories, try turning on the app or some lullaby music, placing the screen facing down and by the door (keeping it away from the child’s eyesight). It’s a great way to have the body begin to unwind in the dark.

The second step is to re-adjust bedtime gradually. You can begin 1-2 weeks prior to when school starts adjusting bedtime approximately 15 minutes earlier every 1-2 days. This means that if bedtime currently is 9:00PM, start with a 8:45PM goal of sleeping, and in 1-2 days, increase by another 15 minutes. And so on.

Now if school has started already or you don’t have 1 to 2 weeks to prepare, no
worries. Implement an early bedtime for 1-2 weeks until you start to notice that morning wake ups are easier (less crankiness) and bedtime is becoming more or a breeze.

Woman Stunned to Find Out That ‘Anonymous’ Kidney Donor is Actually Her Best Friend

Doncella Liggins and Beverly Burch have been best friends since they were sorority sisters in college decades ago – and over the course of the last year, they both have been hanging on to secrets that would soon leave each other stunned.

For months, Liggins had refrained from telling her best friend that she had kidney disease. After spending some time on the transplant list, she finally confessed to Burch.

The two women waited with baited breath, hoping for a match to come through until they eventually received a call from Saint Luke’s saying that they had found an anonymous donor.

“I said ‘WHAT?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, there’s a match.’ And I said, ‘Who?’” Liggins told KMBC. “He said, ‘Well, I can’t tell you. The only thing I can tell you is that they’re young and healthy.’”

The sorority sisters were delighted – except Burch knew something that Liggins did not.

Months passed until it was finally the day before the surgery, and Burch presented her friend with a card saying that she was the anonymous donor.

She had been keeping her identity a secret from Liggins for months out of fear that she would “jinx” the surgery.

“At that moment I realized who it was,” said Liggins. “And I went, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s you! It’s you!’”

Since the two women both live in the small town of Butler, Missouri, Burch says that she is pleasantly surprised that their community was able to keep her identity a secret. Fortunately, the surgery went off without a hitch and they are both recovering from the operation.

They hope that their story will inspire others to donate their organs as well.

“I would absolutely do it again in a heartbeat,” said Burch. “But I really need my other kidney.”

Starbucks to Pay Employees to Spend Half of Work Hours Volunteering for Charities

Starbucks is launching a test program that will allow their full-time employees to split their work hours between the café and “volunteering” for local nonprofits.

The company hopes that by allowing their employees to spend their time helping the community, it will keep their workforce happier and reduce turnover.

36 workers have been selected for the program across 13 different cities. The employees will spend 20 weekly hours working at their Starbucks outlet while spending the other 20 hours at a charity. Additionally, the employees will still be receiving all of their full-time benefits despite only spending half of their time at the restaurant.

The employees are working with charities that range across dozens of initiatives, including helping the environment, feeding the hungry, aiding the homeless, supporting refugees, and facilitating disaster relief.

The program, which is being called the Service Fellows pilot, is being facilitated through Points of Light, a nonprofit volunteering group. The 6-month pilot program will collectively provide 17,000 hours of community service across America.

“Starbucks partners have a passion for service both in and out of their stores. The program powers that passion through philanthropy and partnerships to have the greatest impact,” said Virginia Tenpenny, vice president of global social impact at Starbucks and executive director of The Starbucks Foundation.

“Our Service Fellows pilot is an innovative model that combines work, service, and partnerships, a model that will inform how we catalyze our partners and grantees to create enduring change in our communities,” she added.

Points of Light will be paying the Service Fellows through a grant that is provided by the Starbucks Foundation. If the program is found to be successful, Starbucks may be recruiting more workers for the initiative in fall 2019.

Teacher Goes Above and Beyond to Help Teen Mom Years After Having Her in Class

It has been three years since LaShonda Carter had Larresha Plummer in her class – but that didn’t stop her from answering her student’s request for help last week.

One night when Carter was having trouble sleeping, she started checking her social media pages at about 3AM. As she was browsing the internet, however, she received a message from 18-year-old Plummer.

Plummer explained how she was going through some tough times. She had just given birth to a baby and even though she was trying to go to a job fair the very next morning, she knew that it would be unhealthy for the baby to be on public transit. Thus, she had no idea how to the fair.

Carter immediately offered to pick up the young mother and drive her to the job fair the next morning.

Hours later, Carter took Plummer to the fair and proceeded to sit in the car with the weeks-old infant while her ex-student applied for jobs.

Carter first met Plummer when she was teaching at Harper High School in Chicago, Illinois. The two shared a fond friendship, and even after Carter started teaching at another school, they remained in contact through social media for the following years.

Carter, who says that she will always be there for her students, then posted a Facebook Live video from her car asking for her community members to lend a hand by donating clothes, supplies, and food for the baby.

“Sometimes as a teacher, our jobs go beyond the classroom… she’s a young teenage mom, and she needs some help,” said Carter. “I’m gonna do what I can, as much as I can as an educator, but know I can’t do it all by myself.”

There has not yet been an update on how many donations have been made to aid Plummer’s role as a parent, but Carter’s Facebook Live video has already garnered thousands of views and comments offering assistance.

Additionally, Carter told CNN that the young mother has now found a job and will soon be attending college.

Some people might think that it’s difficult for two separate faiths to coexist peacefully – but this Pakistani province has used food to go above and beyond the concept of respecting their neighbors.

Food is one of the best ways of bringing people together, but in this case, it’s rather the act of NOT eating which keeps the Hindu majority and the Muslim minority in the East-Pakistan province in such a peaceful state.

Cows are sacred to Hindus, and after generations of living together, their Muslim neighbors have stopped eating cows as a means of respecting their Hindu community members.

Despite cows being much less expensive to buy, the Muslims of the Tharparkar district spend their holiday of Eid al-Adha eating goats instead of cows so they won’t hurt Hindu feelings.

The gesture is not based on necessity, either – unlike the neighboring country of India, there is no law that prevents people from eating cow meat.

This mutual respect has been the catalyst for a very harmonious state of affairs for the mixed-faith community. They attend each other’s weddings, religious festivals, rain ceremonies, and actively work to make life between faiths as pleasant as possible, which has resulted in a reported crime rate of almost 0%.

Ghansham Das, the 60-year old former chairman of a local city union council, told Arab News: “In our area, people of two different faiths live together, but this is a blessing for us, not a curse, unlike what we see in many places around the world … We are not only an example for the rest of our country but for the entire world.”

“We are faced with drought, and have the lowest human development index but we are rich in terms of love, respect, and brotherhood,” added another resident.

Couple Has Taken 11,000 Dogs into Their Own Home So the Pups Won’t Be Euthanized

Life in the dog house may not be too bad, according to this couple.

As a means of saving dogs from being euthanized at regular animal shelters, Ron Danta and Danny Robertshaw welcome dogs into their own home until they can be adopted.

They aren’t just taking in one or two strays, however – the couple recently told CBS News that they currently share their home with 86 different dogs.

The couple from Rembert, South Carolina first opened their arms to rescue dogs after they began taking in animals that were lost after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. As they continued taking in more and more pups, they turned their home into a sort of animal shelter called Danny and Ron’s Rescue.

To date, Danny and Ron have saved over 11,000 dogs.

A film crew recently put together a documentary about the couple called Life in the Doghouse, which will be showing in theaters on September 12th.

Beer Deliveryman Prevents Suicide on a Bridge By Offering a Cold One—While Channeling Denzel Washington

The voices of God and Denzel Washington helped to prevent a man from jumping to his death—and the cold beer didn’t hurt, either.

Earlier this month, two beer deliverymen felt an unexplainable urge to take a completely different route to one of their stops. The unusual route took Jason Gabel and Kwame Anderson across a bridge where they noticed a man on the other side of the safety fence.

They stopped the truck and when Kwame asked the guy if he was alright, he admitted that he was planning to take his own life.

After Gabel called 911, the dispatcher said to do nothing—and wait until police arrived. But Kwame took matters into his own hands.

He told KMSP News how he then channeled his inner Denzel Washington. He remembered the hostage negotiator in the film Inside Man, and thought, “I gotta keep this guy entertained somehow, because if I wait for police, this thing may be over…”

 

Kwame then spent the next hour talking to the suicidal man and asking about his life, while officers on the scene watched. He learned the man lived around the corner from the bridge, he was from Chicago, and he had children.

He eventually asked the guy if he wanted to get food with him. He replied that he wasn’t hungry. He asked if he needed money—the man said no.

Then, Anderson asked if he would like to drink a beer with him and the man paused. “Maybe.”

Anderson ran and grabbed a 12-pack of Coors from the back of the delivery truck and cracked one open, promising that if the guy came back over the fence, the beers were all his.

The man agreed and slowly walked back from the ledge. He was later brought in an ambulance to the hospital for treatment.

Kwame and his partner say it was God that prompted them to take a different route that morning, but there’s nothing quite like sharing a cold beer with Denzel that will ultimately win the day.
