People Have Passively Planted Over 30 Million Trees Simply by Surfing the Web

There are now 30 million more trees in the world thanks to people who are casually surfing the web.

The environmental milestone is thanks to Ecosia, a search engine that uses all of their profits generated from internet searches to plant trees around the world.

It works similarly to any other search engine (like Google), except for the fact that since Ecosia started in 2009, their reforestation efforts have removed 1.5 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

MOREIndia Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

According to the organization, people make over 3.5 billion Google searches every day – and if just a fraction of those searches were made through their service, then the world would get a lot greener a lot more quickly.

The browser is easy to implement, too – all you have to do is download a web browser extension from their website (for free), and then you go about your business.

This way, when you’re searching for funny cat videos, you’re helping to passively plant trees around the world.

Hero the dog has made international headlines for his skills before, but his most recent stunt takes the cake.

Hero and his owner, Sara Carson, just broke the Guinness World Record for most doggie tricks performed in one minute. The collie is capable of performing hundreds of tricks, but his final tally came to 49 tricks in 60 seconds, which is almost double the previous record.

Carson has been working with her canine companion since he was a 4-month-old rescue puppy. Now 5 years old, Hero and Carson have traveled around the world to show off his super skills.

Many people might recognize the dynamic duo as finalists in the 12th season of America’s Got Talent. Others might have seen them on The Ellen Show or The Late Show With David Letterman.

Man Uses Dad’s Lucky Coin to Scratch Lottery Ticket And Wins $4 Million for the 2nd Time

Michigan Lottery photo

Mark Clark may be the luckiest man in Michigan after winning a second $4 million prize in the state’s instant game lottery.

Clark, who lives in South Rockwood, Michigan, won the prize after using a coin given to him by his father who died last year.

“I scratched the ticket off in the store…and I can’t help but think maybe that lucky coin helped me win this.”

The first time Clark won a $4 million prize was in December 2017, when he played the Lottery’s Millionaire’s Club instant game.

“You don’t think you’ll win millions once—and you definitely never think it would happen twice,” said the 50 year old, who he kept playing the lottery, anyway.

When the Principal Complimented Them On Their Jeans, They Helped Buy Him His Own Pair

Not all principals have good relationships with their students, but Jeffrey Miller is definitely an exception.

Miller is the principal of Washington Park High School in Racine, Wisconsin. Despite being a figure of authority, he has quite an amiable reputation with his students. In fact, these two youngsters love him so much, they helped to get him a new pair of jeans so the three of them could all wear matching pants.

Back in March, Miller had teased 15-year-old Laron Franklin and 16-year-old Jaisjuan Brown for wearing the same pair of fashionable paint-splattered jeans.

“I saw them coming in and they had these pants on, and I started poking some fun at them,” Miller told TODAY Parents. “I said, ‘Aww, you guys look so cute! You guys match!’ Then they said they’d get me a pair and asked my size, but I thought they were joking.”

WATCH‘Misbehaved’ Class Comes Together to Help Cash-Strapped Teacher

True to their word, Jaisjuan and Laron collaborated with one of their teachers so they could get him the jeans the very same day. When the educator was on her lunch break, she went to the mall, got a pair of the pants, brought them back to the school, and had the two students present Miller with the special gift.

“He was so thrilled that we actually got him a pair, and that made us feel good about ourselves,” Laron told the news outlet. “We have a really cool relationship and he’s always laughing with us.”

Miller immediately changed into the pants and proudly wore them through the hallways alongside his two pupils. As the three of them paraded through the cafeteria and the classrooms, delighted youngsters took photos of the trio and posted them to social media. One such photo was shared over 25,000 times on Twitter.

Miller simply says that he is happy to connect with his students.

“We didn’t intend to go viral,” said Miller. “I got into education because I wanted to make an impact in kids’ lives … the students know when you’re genuine and they know when you’re not. I’ve always believed that when kids really trust and believe in you, you can help them reach their full potential and that’s what we do here every single day.”

700 Acres of Massive 1,000-Year-old Redwoods Are Being Turned into a Public Park

This 730-acre patch of private land has been a well-kept secret for almost a century. Soon, however, it will be turned into a national park for the masses to enjoy.

The Harold Richardson Redwood Reserve, which is home to the oldest and tallest redwood trees in the area, was recently bought out by the Save The Redwoods League for $18.1 million.

The owner of the land, 96-year-old Harold Richardson, had spent his entire life watching over the land in Sonoma County. When he died in 2016, he bequeathed the land to his heirs, who contacted Save the Redwoods about permanently protecting the property for the years to come.

There are over 1,450 ancient redwood trees on the reserve that tower as high as a 32-story building. Some of the largest trees on the property are over 1,000 years old and taller than the 305-foot Statue of Liberty in New York City.

RELATEDFarmer Returns 700 Acres of California Coast to Native American Tribe

“It’s as if we’ve discovered an ancient civilization; an oasis of towering redwoods hidden from public view for over a century,” said Sam Hodder, League President and CEO.

After three years of conducting research and environmental surveys, the conservational group says that they plan on opening the reserve to the public for free.

“We are grateful for the Richardson family’s foresight in stewarding this forest with such care and allowing us the opportunity to save it,” said Hodder. “The League envisions stewarding this property as a public park in the future for all to enjoy — the first new old-growth redwood park in a generation. Harold Richardson Redwoods Reserve, named to honor the legacy of the family’s patriarch, will be the newest gem on California’s crown of redwood parks, providing inspiration, recreation, and clean air and water.”

Fishermen Save Starving Fox That Was Stranded on an Iceberg at Sea

These fishermen were not looking for anything other than crabs when they set sail on Friday, but then they saw a small dark shape on top of an iceberg.

Alan Russell and his crew from Labrador, Newfoundland were roughly 4 miles (7 kilometers) away from shore when they spotted the critter perched atop of the makeshift raft. When they sailed closer, they found that it was a little Arctic fox, soaking wet and shivering from the cold.

Initially, the fishermen tried to pluck the fox from the ice, but it was too skittish to let them get close enough. The team then resorted to breaking the ice pan with their boat and fishing the fox out of the water with a net.

The crew looked after the fox, but it refused to eat anything that they offered it.

Russell’s boat eventually stopped for supplies at a nearby harbor where they bought a package of sawdust to help the fox dry off. Not only that, they finally found a treat that appealed to their rescued friend: Vienna sausages.

The crew managed to nurse the fox back to health by keeping it warm and feeding it sausages. By the time it was strong enough to be released back into the wild, it had developed a friendly bond with its human companions.

“He wasn’t aggressive at all,” Russell told CBC’s Labrador Morning. “After a while, when he was coming around, he liked us more, because we were feeding him. And he didn’t mind us after.”

Russell guesses that the critter had been hunting for food on the ice pan when it broke off from the mainland and floated out to sea.

US Supreme Court Rules That Police Will Need a Warrant for Cell Phone Location Data

In a “landmark” win for privacy, the US Supreme Court ruled that police will need a warrant in order to access a person’s cell phone location data.

The motion, which was passed in a 5–4 majority on Friday, is a definitive stepping stone to setting up a framework that protects Americans from law enforcement and government officials taking advantage of our technological lives.

“This is a landmark privacy case,” said Jameel Jaffer, director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, according to NPR.

“It’s also a very significant case for First Amendment freedoms — that is, for the freedoms of speech and the press and association. A government that can track your every movement without a warrant is a government that can freely monitor activist political associations, or monitor government employees’ contacts with the press.”

RELATEDIn Landmark Case, South Korean Court Rules That it is Illegal to Kill Dogs for Food

Up until now, the technological right to privacy has been blurry. When consumers sign up for certain cell phone services and websites, it has been assumed that using these services means that the consumer is implicitly agreeing to cell phone companies being allowed to share their data with third parties.

While these cell phone companies have mainly collected location data for the sake of better service, police have gained access to the data in order to track certain people, the most notable incident being the recent arrest of Timothy Carpenter, who was captured because law enforcement officials used cell tower information to gather evidence against Carpenter in his trial. Carpenter was able to appeal to the conviction by arguing that police had invaded his privacy without a warrant.

The ruling, which was written by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, will require further clarification, though he was quick to emphasize that the ruling will not apply to typical means of surveillance or law enforcement, such as security cameras and matters of national security.

MORECalifornia Becomes First State to Feed Chronically Ill With Specially Prescribed Meals

However, he did state that the authors of the Constitution would have found the blatant invasion of privacy in direct violation of the Fourth Amendment.

American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Nate Wessler said: “Today’s decision rightly recognizes the need to protect the highly sensitive location data from our cellphones, but it also provides a path forward for safeguarding other sensitive digital information in future cases – from our emails, smart home appliances and technology that is yet to be invented.”

When Pizza Driver Gets into Accident, Firefighters Deliver the Hot Pizza Themselves

This team of firefighters is dedicated to serving their community in more ways than one; in addition to caring about the safety of their neighbors, they’re also concerned about people’s bellies, too.

The firefighters from Engine 642 in West Henrietta, New York answered an emergency call about a driver who had gotten into a car collision earlier this week. When they arrived on the scene, they discovered that the driver was a pizza delivery driver.

The crew made sure that the driver was taken care of and safely loaded onto the ambulance before they took it upon themselves to finish the job.

With mischievous smiles on their faces, the team arrived at the customer’s house with pie in hand and explained the situation.

“If its not delivery its Di… Fire dept?!” joked the Henrietta station Facebook page. “Just down the road from the call they delivered the pizza and thanked the customer for deciding to order out and not risk burning food and setting off the fire alarm!”

While the customer was initially confused by the unusual delivery, he was grateful for the pizza.

This is not the only time that the Henrietta Fire Department lent a helping hand to their community, either – just days after pictures of the pizza incident were published to Facebook, the department page posted photos of their firefighters changing a tire for a senior couple.

“Our kind gestures continue with crews stopping and changing a flat tire for an elderly couple stopped on the side of I-390 this evening,” wrote the station.

Watch 10-Year-old Boy’s Emotional Reaction to Seeing Color for the First Time in His Life

Before his 10th birthday, Xavier McCoury was just your average fourth grader except for one key difference: he was completely colorblind.

While colorblindness is a fairly common genetic condition, Xavier’s is more rare because he can only see in shades of black, white, and grey, rather than just being blind to certain colors.

So as an early birthday present in 2017, his aunt and mother bought him a pair of Enchroma Glasses: a unique set of lenses that correct colorblindness.

When it finally came time to open the mystery gift, the family from Charlotte, North Carolina video-chatted with Xavier’s aunt Selena at her home in Ohio. Selena explained what the glasses were for, and Xavier’s jaw dropped.

Once he put them on, the tears started coming.

“I didn’t know this is what humans really see… my thought was, ‘Is this color, because if it is, it’s awesome,” Xavier told KING5.

As Xavier took in all the different shades and hues that colored the world, his mother Melissa says that there was not a dry eye in the group. His father excitedly grabbed some of the boy’s possessions so he could look at them with fresh eyes.

“There’s so many beautiful Carolina sunsets and you just have to walk him through but he has no comprehension of what it is, the fact that he can see those now and all the beauty the world has to offer, it’s just priceless,” Melissa said to the news outlet.

Scientists Discover ‘Uplifting’ Natural Phenomenon That Could Prevent Any More Catastrophic Ice Loss

A shocking new discovery in Antarctica might be a potential life saver in the fight against climate change.

According to a study conducted by The Ohio State University, the earth under the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is rising faster than ever recorded before. While that may sound alarming, it’s actually good news for the crumbling ice sheets above.

GPS stations attached to the Arctic bedrock shows that the “uplift rate” of the region is measured at roughly 41 millimeters (1.6 inches) per year. In contrast, areas such as Iceland and Alaska were considered to have very speedy uplift rates of 20 to 30 millimeters per year.

“The rate of uplift we found is unusual and very surprising. It’s a game changer,” said Terry Wilson, one of the leaders of the international study that was published in the Science journal.

RELATEDIn Historic Announcement, World Bank Says it Will No Longer Finance Oil and Gas Exploration

The unusual activity of the bedrock is caused by the decreasing weight of ice, which, according to the researchers, completely changes how they understand Arctic geology.

The discovery suggests that the bedrock could provide an invaluable source of stability for the Arctic sheets, which would prevent further ice loss and deterioration. Additionally, researchers are expecting the uplift rate to double – even triple – over the course of the next century.

“We previously thought uplift would occur over thousands of years at a very slow rate, not enough to have a stabilizing effect on the ice sheet. Our results suggest the stabilizing effect may only take decades,” Wilson said.

LOOKIndia Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

Before making the groundbreaking discovery, scientists had assumed that the earth would rise too slowly to provide any kind of meaningful support – but the findings provide “positive implications” and “good news” for the future.

“The lowering of the sea level, the rising of pinning points and the decrease of the inland slope due to the uplift of the bedrock are all feedbacks that can stabilize the ice sheet,” Wilson said.

Hundreds of People Bring Backpacks Instead of Flowers to Woman’s Funeral

In accordance with one woman’s final wish, there were backpacks lining the pews at her funeral instead of flowers.

Tammy Waddell passed away earlier this month at the age of 58 from a prolonged illness at Northside Hospital-Forsyth in Georgia, but before she died, she asked for people to bring backpacks filled with school supplies to her funeral.

Waddell worked as a paraprofessional and teacher at several schools in the Forsyth County school district. At one point in her 30-year career, she was even recognized as Teacher of the Year.

So when she utilized her funeral as a means of giving back to her students one last time, no one was surprised by the compassionate gesture.

“Those around her recognized Tammy by her generosity, selflessness and unconditional love,” says her obituary. “Though her achievements and accolades are numerous, none are greater than the many lives that she changed over the course of her three decades in education.”

Waddell’s cousin, Dr. Brad Johnson, posted a photo of the unique funeral feature to Twitter where it garnered praise and condolences.

“My cousin, a teacher, wanted backpacks with supplies brought to her funeral instead of flowers for needy students,” Brad Johnson said on Twitter. “Serving others to the end.”

The backpacks will be donated to Project Connect: a school district initiative that donates school supplies to the region’s neediest students.

In ‘Unprecedented’ Show of Responsibility, the Next Olympics Win Gold for Being Green

Representatives of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo have announced that the event will be 100% powered by renewable energy.

The “unprecedented” initiative means that everything from the press office to the athlete’s village and the stadiums will be powered by sustainable energy sources. To achieve this target, the organizing committee plans on installing solar panels and buying renewable energy from power companies.

Additionally, 99% of the buildings, supplies, and materials will be reused or recycled after the games. The committee says that they will be leasing and renting as many goods as possible for the event. If the product can not be leased, then the committee plans on dedicating special attention towards how the product will be recycled or reused after the games.

According to the Olympic sustainability goals, the committee also plans on utilizing fuel cell vehicles. The committee has projected a 65% recycling goal for items such as water bottles and food, which is slightly higher than the London Olympic recycling goal.

RELATEDThe City of London Will Be Powered By 100% Renewable Energy Starting in October

Finally, all the raw materials needed for the events, including timber, paper, oil, and agricultural products will be sustainably sourced.

The Olympic website says: “Japan and Tokyo have overcome serious pollution issues and become a mature society. We are now facing global sustainability challenges such as climate change, depletion of natural resources, loss of biodiversity, human rights issue such as discrimination, and aging.

“Thus, the sustainability concept of the Games is set as ‘Be better, together – For the planet and the people.’”

Family Was Filling Up Swimming Pool Using Only Pots and Pans Until These Firemen Came Along

Firefighters don’t always have to be rescuing people from burning buildings in order to be serving their communities.

A group of firefighters from the Charlotte Fire Station in North Carolina were on their way back from a medical call this week when they spotted a family trying to fill up an outdoor kiddie pool solely by using pots and pans to carry the water.

Not only that, the family had been trying to fill up the pool because it was a little boy’s birthday.

Watch Paul McCartney Bring People to Tears With Surprise Visits to Liverpool Hangouts

Sir Paul McCartney delighted hundreds of Beatles fans last week when he returned to his hometown of Liverpool for a special nostalgia tour of all the old hotspots.

The visit was in lieu of a brand new episode of “Carpool Karaoke” featuring James Corden from The Late Late Show. Throughout the 23-minute show, Corden and McCartney chat and joke about what it was like to be in the Beatles, how McCartney wrote some of his songs, and how it feels to think about the old days.

As the tour starts off, the former Beatle fittingly joins the talk show host for “Baby You Can Drive My Car” before the trip eventually leads them into a rousing rendition of “Penny Lane”, which they sing as they simultaneously visit some of the spots that are mentioned in the song, including the barbershop. Not surprisingly, the stylist working at the shop is stunned to see McCartney standing on her doorstep.

At about 4:50 into the video, McCartney explains his heart-wrenching inspiration behind the song “Let It Be”, which they proceed to sing, bringing Corden to tears.

Researchers Have Finally Created Simple Eco-Friendly Machine That Recycles Used Diapers

With billions of diapers ending up in landfills every year, researchers have been scrambling to find an efficient way to recycle the wasteful product. Finally, a team of scientists have found an easy solution.

Researchers at Chung Hua University in Taiwan have created a user-friendly machine that can turn 220 pounds of dirty diapers into clean, raw materials in a single hour. The team is now working on developing their prototype into a larger facility that can recycle over 10 tons of dirty diapers in a single day.

The machine sanitizes the soiled diapers on-site. Then, through a special process called stratification, the machine separates and salvages all the reusable materials in the products, such as fluff pulp, sodium polyacrylate and polyethylene. The raw materials can then be taken to a recycling center where they can be reused to make things like cardboard, paper, absorbent pads, and more diapers.

Reusing these materials is estimated to save roughly 864,000 trees every year. Plus, the machine uses less water than the average toilet.

LOOKThese Cool New Shoes Are Made From Recycled Chewing Gum

Currently, dirty diapers make up between 3 and 5% of the world’s garbage. Some diapers can take up to 400 years to decompose – and even “biodegradable” diapers take 50 years to fully degrade.

If dirty diapers are not buried in landfills, then they are simply incinerated, which means that all of the toxic pathogens and chemicals used in the products are then sent into the atmosphere. Additionally, incinerators produce thousands of tons of harmful carbon emissions per 10 tons of diapers.

Implementing this innovative and cost-effective machine in day care centers and assisted living facilities around the world would finally help to clean up one of the most problematic additions to landfills today.

Young Man Praised for Pushing Woman Home in a 360-Pound Wheelchair After Battery Dies

A 24-year-old man is being hailed for helping a woman get home after her 360-pound electric wheelchair had conked out on the road.

Bilal Quintyne is an amateur boxer who had been preparing to go for a run with his trainer in Smyrna, Georgia when he first spotted 67-year-old Belinda Whitaker sitting in her wheelchair.

The battery in the wheelchair had died, and even though she was relatively near a few bustling establishments, no one had stopped to help her for 45 minutes.

Quintyne walked up to Whitaker and asked her what was wrong. When she explained her predicament, he offered to push her all the way back to her senior living home.

Even though it was a 30-minute hike back to the facility, Quintyne did not falter. As he tirelessly pushed the wheelchair, his trainer took a video of his young student’s good deed which was later uploaded to Facebook and viewed millions of times.

The clip’s instant fame spurred several members of Whitaker’s church to reach out to him on social media and invite him to one of their services.

Watch Saudi Woman Celebrate the End of Female Driving Ban By Doing a Lap in F1 Race Car

Women all over Saudi Arabia are celebrating a historic day for their country: the day that Saudi women are legally allowed to drive on the kingdom’s roads.

The decision to lift the archaic ban was made by the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in September 2017, making Saudi Arabia the last country in the world to allow women to drive.

Female race care driver Aseel Al-Hamad decided to mark the exciting day by taking a celebratory lap around the Le Castellet circuit in a 2012 Renault Formula One race car.

Al-Hamad’s drive was part of a pre-race parade to welcome back the first French Grand Prix tournament in 10 years.

“I have loved racing and motor sport from a very young age and to drive a Formula One car goes even beyond my dreams and what I thought was possible,” she said in a statement. “I hope doing so on the day when women can drive on the roads in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia shows what you can do if you have the passion and spirit to dream.”

“The most important thing I am looking forward to is to start seeing the next generation, young girls, trying [motor sport]. I want to watch them training and taking the sport very seriously as a career. This is going to be really my biggest achievement.”

Al-Hamad also marked the day exciting day by going on her first ever drive on a racing circuit in her home country.
