Watch the Moment When ALS Patient Who Inspired the Ice Bucket Challenge Speaks With His Voice Again

It has been several years since Pat Quinn was first diagnosed with ALS, a devastating neurodegenerative disease that causes the body to progressively lose all motor function.

Instead of becoming resigned to his life with the disease, however, Quinn became an outspoken advocate for ALS research, which eventually spurred the former athlete to co-found the Ice Bucket Challenge – a viral video fad that garnered a record amount of donations for ALS research. But as the disease continued to affect Quinn, he slowly lost his ability to speak.

While there is currently existing technology that allows ALS patients to speak via computer programming, many people are apprehensive about using the tech because they don’t like hearing themselves speak through the impersonal voice of a robot.

That’s why an international initiative known as Project Revoice is recreating the voices of ALS patients – such as Pat Quinn – so they can embrace the familiarity of their own voices once more.

“It’s a strange feeling saying your first words a second time,” says Quinn. “I’ve always loved making speeches, as you know, but this is a whole new experience. It’s like you don’t even realize how powerful, how personal, how unique your voice really is until it’s taken from you.”

“After my diagnosis, I began telling my story to people knowing that ALS would one day try and shut me up. Sorry I’m not going out that easy, cause guess what? My voice is back. I will make sure my voice is heard until ALS stops robbing people of their own voices. ALS has lost this round.”

Mom of 5 Tried to End it All After Devastating Loss – Until Pastor Randomly Reawakened Childhood Dream of Law School

Ieshia Champs is a single mother of 5 who has overcome some of the most devastating losses – but thanks to a fateful phone call from her pastor, she is fulfilling her childhood dream of graduating from law school.

Champs has wanted to be a lawyer since she was 7 years old, but her rocky upbringing as a teenager stacked the odds against her.

“I really didn’t have any stable guidance at that time. My mom was addicted to drugs. My dad was deceased. And I was homeless,” Champs told CBS News. “I lived with friends or whoever would take me in. Then I got pregnant with the first of my five children, and things just went from there.”

Champs eventually found stability by dropping out of high school and landing a job at a call center. Then at the age of 24 when she was pregnant with her fourth child, she endured another devastating set of tragedies.

Champs’s house burned down; she lost her job; her mother died of a stroke; and the father of her children passed away from cancer.

The devastation eventually became too much for the Texas mother and she tried to take her own life.

Shortly after the suicide attempt, however, she received a serendipitous phone call from the pastor of her church, the Ministers for Christ Christian Center.

“Pastor Louise Holman called me one day and said that God told her to tell me to go back to school and get my GED, because that lawyer I wanted to be, I’ll be it!” Champs recalled. “I thought it was a little crazy because I was too old and I had three children with my fourth child on the way.”

Not only that, but Champs said that she had never told the pastor about her childhood dream of becoming a lawyer.

Despite her initial apprehension, she dutifully reenrolled in school and acquired her GED. Next, she took classes at Houston Community College before going on to attend the University of Houston–Downtown.

Finally after years of hard work, the 33-year-old mother is due to graduate Magna Cum Laude from the Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law in May.

As a means of celebrating the exciting occasion, Champs posed for a series of photos with the five “mini-lawyers” to whom she credits her success.

“I took the pictures with my kids because they helped me through school. They’re graduating too!” Champs joked. “They would help me review with flash cards while I cooked. They would sit as a mock jury while I taught them what I learned that day. I would sit in my closet and pray and cry because I was overwhelmed and my oldest son, David, would gather his siblings, give them a snack, make them take a bath, gather their school clothes, all to make things easier for me. And I had no knowledge of him doing that until I went to do it!”

Home Depot is Donating $50 Million to Job Training for Veterans and Disadvantaged Youth

In order to curb rising housing prices and labor shortages, Home Depot has just announced that they will be making a huge donation towards an organization that will provide job training for the Americans who need it the most.

The Home Depot Foundation will be spending $50 million on job training for over 20,000 veterans, disadvantaged youth, high schoolers, and U.S. Army soldiers returning to civilian life.

The money will be given to the Home Builders Institute (HBI), an organization that educates and trains workers for the construction and labor industry.

“It’s important that we support the trades,” said Home Depot CEO Craig Menear, according to USA Today.

RELATEDAfter Denver Hired Homeless People to Perform Day Labor For the City, More Than 100 Landed Regular Jobs

While HBI receives much of their financing from the Labor Department and similar state programs, the organization says that they are often struggling to maintain their grants. The partnership with Home Depot, however, will ensure that they will have an additional source of steady income over the course of the next decade.

“This is going to take us to a new level,” HBI CEO John Courson told the news outlet. “We’re going to have a partner” for stable funding.

WATCHVeteran Bursts into Tears When Dentist Sees His Teeth and Gives $15K of Work For Free

The funding is expected to almost double the amount of construction workers who will receive training from HBI. More importantly, HBI has only trained about 120 ex-military members over the course of the last four years. Home Depot’s donation will raise the number of trained workers to 1,500 veterans and soldiers annually.

The partnership is especially beneficial since veterans and soldiers make ideal candidates for construction and carpentry.

“They love to work with their hands, they work well in a team, and they’re used to being outdoors [with] the elements,” says Courson.

Los Angeles is Painting Streets Grey in Bid to Fight Climate Change and Spur Cooler Summer

In a bid to combat climate change and spur cooler summer weather, Los Angeles city workers are painting their streets grey.

The ‘cool pavement’ project, which was first tested in Canoga Park back in May, prevents asphalt from retaining heat by using reflective gray sealant to create cooler temperatures in urban neighborhoods.

After ensuring that the sealant passed all state traction tests for wet surfaces, the mixture was shown to reduce street temperatures by up to 23 degrees.

This also combats the “heat island effect”: a phenomenon that occurs when city surfaces absorb heat so that urban areas can be hotter than the surrounding rural areas. Since the lighter streets will create a cooler neighborhood climate, residents are also expected to spend less money on air conditioning, which will benefit both the consumer and the environment.

LOOKThis Pollution-Gobbling City Bench Can Absorb as Many Toxins as 275 Trees

“It’s awesome. It’s very cool — both literally and figuratively,” said Councilman Bob Blumenfield, according to the LA Daily News. “The downside: we won’t be able to fry eggs on the streets.”

The CoolSeal mixture that is currently being used to cover the streets comes with a hefty price tag of $40,000 per mile, but city officials hope to find ways to bring the cost down as the project progresses. Plus, the benefits could be priceless.

The initiative is also being utilized as part of the city’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% below 1990 levels before 2025.

NASA Engineer Saves Passenger Jet From Disaster When He Spots Malfunction From Window Seat

It can be easy to brush off certain events as trivial matters that don’t require attention – but when the safety of dozens of airplane passengers was on the line, this NASA engineer decided to speak up.

Rumaasha Maasha was preparing to fly from Huntsville, Alabama to Denver, Colorado back in January when he spotted a fluid leak from his window seat on the wing.

Maasha, who is an aerospace engineer at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, was able to identify the leak as a malfunctioning vent valve.

“Normally, if it’s a humid day, you’ll see vortices, or circular patterns of rotating air, off the wing,” Maasha said in an interview with NASA. “About 1,000 feet off the ground, I started seeing something white and thought, ‘maybe we’re just hitting some humidity.’ Well, then we banked to turn cross-wind and it was still doing it, and that’s when I knew something was up. I looked closer and immediately realized that we were losing fluid.”

RELATED2 Teenage Girls Saved From Abduction by Airline Employee Whose Name is ‘Miracle’

Maasha also knew that as the plane increased in velocity and altitude, the Venturi effect would increase suction on the fuel tank and worsen the leak.

“I quietly motioned to the flight attendant to come over and fortunately she was very attentive,” he said. “She called the crew and the key thing is that she did this as we were still climbing out. Within a minute or two, they reduced speed and leveled off. The fuel leak diminished immediately when they slowed down.”

Much to the irritation of the passengers, the plane returned to the Huntsville airport; but upon finding out the reason for the return – and the hero behind its occurrence – Maasha made quite a few new friends amongst his fellow passengers.

MOREFather Follows Intuition, Hires Helicopter and Finds Injured Son in Crash

According to his employer, Maasha’s experience with NASA wasn’t the only thing that came in handy that day, either; the engineer first became obsessed with aviation as a teenager growing up near an airport in Monrovia, Liberia.

Determined to pursue his dream, Maasha started attending Columbia University at just 15 years old. Then, he got a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

LOOKWhen Flight Attendant Discovers Passenger Has Parkinson’s, He Escorts Her By the Hand to First Class

Even though he wasn’t able to find a job in his field at the time, he got his pilot’s license and worked various jobs amongst different airlines and the FAA. In 2004, he was finally offered a job with NASA as a civil servant.

“Looking back, I guess I had the perfect sets of circumstances to recognize the issue that day,” he said. “Since I was a kid, I’ve always tried to sit in a window seat near the wing. That’s not the first time I’ve noticed something. I’m sure it won’t be the last.”

Police Identify Missing Husky By Seeing if it Sings Along With its Favorite Tune

When a missing dog was finally found by police officers, the owner said that there was a very easy way to determine the identity of the pup: by singing its favorite song.

The Siberian husky’s owner, who chose not to be identified, filed a police report saying that the dog had gone missing from his Southern Israeli home in Beer Sheva.

Police officers eventually spotted a dog with the same physical description while they were out on patrol. A group of teenagers had been watching over the malnourished pup after they said that they had found it in a field.

The officers then called the owner and asked if he wanted to come identify the dog. The man said that there was no need – all the cops needed to do was play the theme song from an Israeli sitcom called Shemesh; or the introduction to the children’s show Arthur.

Just as one of the officers started playing the theme from his phone, the husky looked up with unmistakable recognition and started howling along to the tune.

The husky later shared an emotional reunion with his owner who was delighted to be with his furry companion once more.

Airline is Protecting Hawaiian Coral Reefs By Giving Free Non-Toxic Sunscreen to Tourists

This airline is protecting the oceans below by ensuring that its passengers take responsibility for themselves while they’re on vacation.

Hawaiian Airlines recently announced that they would be giving away free samples of non-toxic sunscreen to all of their passengers flying from North American destinations to the islands throughout the month of April.

The initiative is in light of recent research that discovered that two ingredients in common sunscreens, oxybenzone and octinoxate, can have damaging effects on coral reefs.

The sunscreen being distributed by the airline, which is the “Eco Formula” recipe from Raw Elements, is certified as all-natural, chemical-free, and reef-safe.

“Hawaii is a very special place, and we believe it is our kuleana, or responsibility, to care for our home,” said Avi Mannis, senior vice president of marketing at Hawaiian Airlines. “Through our partnership with Raw Elements, we encourage guests to join us in reducing the human impact on these delicate coral ecosystems.”

“Partnering with Hawaiian Airlines to raise awareness of the critical state of Hawaii’s coral reefs is something we are incredibly proud of,” said Brian Guadagno, founder and CEO of Raw Elements. “Together, we are able to positively impact thousands of Hawaii-bound guests per day on safer sunscreen practices and preserving the reefs.”

Not only will the airline be giving away the sunscreen, but they will also be screening an educational documentary called Reefs at Risk on all of their flights.

Two Veterans Have Spent an Unbelievable 15,000 Hours Driving Disabled Vets to the Hospital

While some people might spend 15,000 hours watching television or commuting to work, these two men have spent an astonishing 15,000 hours shuttling disabled veterans to the hospital for medical treatment.

Over the course of the last 16 years, Bernardo Jaramillo and Mel Ortega have ensured that any veterans who may live in the smaller, more rural communities of New Mexico can be transported to the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque for major procedures and treatments.

Their services are offered through the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a nonprofit that helps disabled ex-military members and their families apply for benefits.

85-year-old Ortega has driven a staggering 200,000 miles for the service while 70-year-old Jaramillo has driven 100,000.

RELATEDAfter Denver Hired Homeless People to Perform Day Labor For the City, More Than 100 Landed Regular Jobs

Both of the retired Army soldiers say that they enjoy driving for the veterans because it allows them to make new friends while they’re on the road – and they’re able to visit their old acquaintances at the hospital.

“When I was wounded in Vietnam, my brothers in arms, they never left me or the other guys behind,” Jaramillo told the Rio Grande Sun. “The reason I do this is, they never let me down, and I don’t intend to let ’em down. I don’t care from what war, we gotta serve them, because they served us.”

Ortega and Jaramillo are looking for a third volunteer driver so they can offer rides four days a week, rather than just three. If you’re interested in volunteering as a driver for DAV, be sure to check out the nonprofit’s website for more information.

Watch Wonderfully Animated French Poem of Animals Encouraging Snails to Celebrate Spring

As a means of welcoming the arrival of warm weather, this production team created a delightful animated video rendition of a children’s poem about a forest full of animals celebrating spring.

The video, which is called “Two Snails Set Off”, is based on the French poem “Song of the Snails Who Went to Burial” written by Jacques Prévert.

The poem is about two snails who are mourning a dead leaf in autumn. Because it takes so long for them to get to the dead leaf’s funeral, however, it is already spring by the time the snails arrive.

New Zealand Launches Dramatic Ban on All Future Off-Shore Oil Exploration

The government of New Zealand has just kicked off the country’s transition to a “carbon-neutral future” by banning all future off-shore oil exploration.

Since all of the country’s currently existing exploration permits in the Taranaki region will be allowed to finish the terms of their contracts, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says that she hopes that this will allow sufficient time for communities, businesses, and work forces to adjust so that “jobs that are there today will remain tomorrow”.

“Unless we make decisions today that will essentially take effect in 30 or more years’ time, we run the risk of acting too late and causing abrupt shocks to communities and our country,” said Ardern at a press conference in Wellington.

“I have seen that happen once in the 1980s and I don’t want to see that again.”

The announcement comes as a welcomed follow-up to a Greenpeace petition of 50,000 signatures that was submitted to Ardern last month. The environmental organization called the ban “a huge win for our climate and people power”.

“The tide has turned irreversibly against big oil in New Zealand,” said the Greenpeace New Zealand executive director, Russel Norman, according to The Guardian.

“Today’s announcement is significant internationally too. By ending new oil and gas exploration in our waters, the fourth-largest exclusive economic zone on the planet is out of bounds for new fossil fuel exploitation. New Zealand has stood up to one of the most powerful industries in the world.

RELATEDCatholic Church to Make Record Divestment From Fossil Fuels

“Bold global leadership on the greatest challenge of our time has never been more urgent and Ardern has stepped up to that climate challenge.”

The New Zealand government said last week that they will begin “laying the groundwork” for lower-carbon energy alternatives by investing $20 million in initiatives and projects for the future of Taranaki.

Teen Plants Hundreds of Mangroves to Replace Trees Trampled by Hurricane Irma

After Hurricane Irma ravaged the South Florida landscape in 2017, an 18-year-old took it upon himself to protect and preserve the environment – and he did it from the roof of his house.

Though the tropical storm wreaked havoc on buildings and properties, Theo Queenee was primarily shocked by how many mangroves had been damaged by the tropical storm.

Mangroves are an essential part of a marine eco-system. In addition to providing a healthy and complex habitat for fish, sharks, and turtles, they also protect the coastline from erosion.

”After the hurricane there was a massive amount of [mangrove] seedlings mixed within the seaweed/debris mixture,” Queenee told Mother Nature Network. “Everything was then going to be gathered and thrown in a truck to dump at a landfill. I realized that all of South Florida would ultimately kill thousands of mangroves in the clean-up process.”

RELATEDGirl’s Lemonade Recipe to Saves Bees Turned Into Million Dollar Whole Foods Deal

As a means of rehabilitating the local mangrove forests, Queenee started growing mangrove seedlings from the roof of his home.

Queenee, who is a freshman at Florida International University, built a greenhouse on his roof so the little trees could get a sufficient amount of sunlight and humidity. Then, he filled the greenhouse with 524 seedlings that were separated into individual yogurt buckets.

After seven months of nursing the seedlings, Queenee and his friends moved the plants to a mud flat in Miami where they will soon grow into a healthy mangrove forest.

“Some officials passed me when I was planting them, and they were so happy to see me doing this,” Quenee told MNN. “My hope in doing so was to create a nursery for all the sharks and fish that live in that location, but also help conserve the area from erosion.”

Watch the Moment a Border Collie is Left Baffled After Trying to Play Fetch With a Statue

Dogs may be man’s best friends, but according to this new video, the same probably can’t be said for statues.

An adorable video of a persistent border collie trying to play fetch with a metal figure on Crosby Beach in Liverpool is making its rounds on the internet.

The amusing pup named Hurley can be seen repeatedly dropping a toy in front of the statue and impatiently waiting for the cast-iron man to reciprocate the gesture.

Hurley’s owner, Adam Shore, can be heard laughing from behind the camera as his dog paws at the ground in confusion.

“He’s addicted to fetch and will play it with anyone. He’ll carry the ball up to everybody he sees to get them to throw the ball, usually when I’ve grown tired after an hour of playing,” Shore told the Daily Mail. “It’s most often people on benches that he goes to, and this is the first time he’s tried to play with a statue.

“It was quite funny when he went up to it, and at one point he looked at me to ask ‘what’s going on?’ He’s not used to being ignored,” he added. “He tried for about a minute to get the statue to play before giving up and moving on.”

Hero 58-Year-old Woman Saves 20 Factory Workers From a Fire

A 58-year-old Indian woman is being hailed as a hero after her quick-thinking helped to save 20 people from a factory fire on Monday morning.

Jyoti Verma was making breakfast at 6:30AM when her neighbor alerted her to a fire that had erupted in a building that was adjacent to her Delhi apartment.

Upon rushing to her window, she saw 10 people crying for help from the third story as smoke billowed from the windows of the lower floors.

Verma initially thew one end of her sari to the workers so that the could climb from the window down to the safety of her terrace. Because they were too afraid to risk the 15-foot distance, one man jumped onto her terrace from the window of the factory.

Not wanting anyone else to injure themselves by jumping, Verma rushed inside to find something more useful. In the midst of her apartment, she found a small bamboo ladder.

With the help of a neighbor, Verma propped up the ladder onto the roof of her terrace so that it stretched across to the factory window. Over the course of the next half hour, twenty workers were able to crawl to safety.

After Anonymous Donor Picks Up Their Tab, Hockey Team Pays His Charity Forward

An anonymous restaurant patron is being hailed for causing a ripple effect of kindness after he paid for a hockey team’s dinner tab earlier this week.

The Barracudas are a midget team for the Dartmouth Whalers Minor Hockey Association. Every year at the end of the season, the youngsters raise money for a celebratory dinner and give the rest of the funds to charity.

This year, they planned on donating their excess charity money to a fundraiser that was created for the Humboldt Broncos.

The Broncos hockey team had been traveling through Saskatchewan on their way to a game last Friday when their bus collided with a transport truck. As of yesterday, almost $7 million had been raised for the survivors and the crash victims’ families.

So when the Barracudas team asked for the check after their dinner on Sunday night, they were stunned to hear from the server that a random man in the restaurant had picked up their $390 tab.

Todd Carruthers, the head coach for the team, told CBC: “A regular had noticed that we were a hockey crowd of kids and we were well-behaved and he took it upon himself to leave his credit card to pay.”

When Carruthers told the youngsters about the gesture – which he described as a “ray of sunshine” – they were overwhelmed with gratitude.

“All the kids were just, you know, gaping open mouth, smile on their face, they couldn’t believe it. I had to explain it to them two or three times what was going on.”

Thanks to the man’s act of kindness, the Barracudas were able to donate $460 to the fundraiser for the Humboldt survivors.

Kenzi Donnelly, the daughter of the server who waited on the hockey team, made a Twitter post about the exchange. Since publishing the story, it has been retweeted by thousands of people, including international Olympians and former NHL players.

“In the face of such tragedy, I think it really just showed people how good people can be, especially in the face of such awful circumstances,” she said.

UK Supermarket Chain to Ban the Use of Palm Oil From Its Line of Branded Products

UK-based supermarket chain Iceland has announced that they will no longer be using palm oil in any of its 130 own name brand product lines.

The ban, which will go into full effect by the end of 2018, is expected to reduce demand by over 500 tons every year.

Palm oil is one of the largest contributors to deforestation in south-east Asia. While other corporate food brands have made efforts to certify their products as palm oil-free, Iceland is the first major UK grocery store to ban the ingredient.

Currently, about half of the supermarket’s products contain palm oil. Even though the ban may incur additional costs to the company, representatives say that those expenses will not be passed onto the consumer.

RELATEDWorld’s Second Largest Fast Food Chain Begins Phase-Out of Plastic Straws

Iceland managing director Richard Walker told the BBC: “Certified sustainable palm oil does not currently limit deforestation and it does not currently limit the growth of palm oil plantations. So until such a time as there is genuinely sustainable palm oil that contains zero deforestation, we are saying no to palm oil.”

Volunteers Never Gave Up on Severely Injured Squirrel—Now in a Loving Home With Hot New Wheels

When Karamel the squirrel was found with her front legs caught in an animal trap, some rescuers believed that there was nothing they could do to help the critter.

Thanks to their perseverance, however, Karamel is not only more mobile than ever – but she also has a loving home.

After the little squirrel was found in the trap in Batman, Turkey, rescuers brought her to a local animal hospital for medical attention.

The veterinarians said that her injuries were too severe to do anything, so Karamel was then brought to a compassionate man named Tayfun Demir who has rescued squirrels in the past in Istanbul –roughly 700 miles away from Batman.

Because gangrene had already infected Karamel’s injuries, it was impossible to salvage her legs; so Demir enlisted the help of a local orthotist, orthopedist, and physical therapist to save her.

The young squirrel underwent two surgeries, one of which lasted six hours. But thanks to the help of the volunteer specialists, she now has a pair of prosthetic wheels that allow her to stay mobile and zoom around the floor without any front legs.

Not only that, but Demir has already adopted her into his family of rescue squirrels.
