Portugal Generated Enough Renewable Energy to Power the Country for an Entire Month

Portugal made headlines last month after it generated enough renewable energy to power the whole country for the entirety of March.

The national grid operator said that Portugal’s average renewable generation exceeded 103% consumption, which beat its previous record of 99.2% in 2014. This is the most amount of renewable energy that the European country has generated in 40 years.

The power surge comes from an excess of wind and hydro energy that was encouraged by a plentiful wet season providing roughly 97% of March’s electricity supply.

This also amounts to roughly 1.8 million tons of CO2 saved from the atmosphere.

Consumers have benefitted from the abundant month by enjoying a four-euro drop in price per megawatt hour.

Portugal’s record-breaking month serves as evidence that the country could easily meet its goal of eliminating its greenhouse gas emissions and becoming carbon neutral by 2040.

With Park Funds Dwindling, Woman’s Endowment Could ‘Save Lives’ in National Forests for Years to Come

These parks in Washington state have been struggling to maintain their infrastructure with their lack of funding – but they have now gotten a huge financial boost thanks to a dead woman who loved the outdoors.

Bette Wallace, a woman who used to live in Washington before moving to California, recently passed away and left $1 million in her will to the state parks that she loved so dearly.

“On behalf of (Wallace’s) trust it was our family’s honor to make this donation on her behalf to the Washington’s National Park Fund knowing it will be used for many projects including a combination of saving lives and supporting volunteer infrastructure in the parks,” Cheri Ryan, Wallace’s niece and the estate’s trustee, said in a statement.

The Mount Rainier Olympic parks plan on using their portion of the funding to create a monitoring system that will hopefully ensure the safety of their rangers in the wilderness and reduce rescuer response time. The North Cascades National Park plans on bulking up infrastructure for their volunteers.

“This funding comes at a pivotal time for Washington’s three largest national parks,” Sarah Creachbaum, Olympic National Park’s superintendent, said in a statement.

“Our country’s national parks have experienced many financial challenges in recent years and there is a significant maintenance backlog. This wonderful donation via [Washington National Parks Foundation] WNPF enables us to invest in much-needed safety technology that can quite literally save lives in Washington for years to come.”

Cat Pawsitive, a life-saving program that uses positive reinforcement to train felines to be more sociable, is hosting its first annual National High-Five Day Shelter Contest.

The contest is asking cat owners and shelter volunteers around the country to upload photos or videos of their feline’s high-five to social media. The organizations running the contest will pick out their favorite posts and select them for a chance to win thousands of dollars in cash grants and 10,000 free bowls of organic pet food for their local animal shelter.

Solar Power Breaks Even More Records in 2017

Solar power has continued to break records in 2017, thanks to historic investments and developments worldwide.

According to UN Environment, solar power received $160.8 billion in investments, which is 18% higher than last year and more than any other energy sector.

Additionally, the world installed a record 98 gigawatts of new solar capacity, far more than the net additions of any other technology, including renewable, fossil fuel, or nuclear.

It made up 57% of last year’s total for all renewables (excluding large hydro) of $279.8 billion, and it towered above new investment in coal and gas generation capacity, estimated at $103 billion.

A driving power behind last year’s surge in solar was China, where an unprecedented boom saw some 53 gigawatts added – more than half the global total – and $86.5 billion invested, up 58%.

The Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2018 report finds that falling costs for solar electricity, and to some extent wind power, is continuing to drive deployment. Last year was the eighth in a row in which global investment in renewables exceeded $200 billion – and since 2004, the world has invested $2.9 trillion in these green energy sources.

“The extraordinary surge in solar investment shows how the global energy map is changing and, more importantly, what the economic benefits are of such a shift,” said UN Environment head Erik Solheim. “Investments in renewables bring more people into the economy, they deliver more jobs, better quality jobs and better paid jobs. Clean energy also means less pollution, which means healthier, happier development.”

Overall, China was by far the world’s largest investing country in renewables, at a record $126.6 billion, up 31% on 2016.

There were also sharp increases in investment in Australia (up 147% to $8.5 billion), Mexico (up 810% to $6 billion), and in Sweden (up 127% to $3.7 billion).

A record 157 gigawatts of renewable power were commissioned last year, up from 143 gigawatts in 2016 and far out-stripping the net 70 gigawatts of fossil-fuel generating capacity added (after adjusting for the closure of some existing plants) over the same period.

When Goats Get Themselves Stuck on Narrow Ledge of Bridge, Humans Come to Their Rescue

Earlier this week, state officials were bewildered to hear that two goats had gotten themselves stuck on a narrow beam underneath of a highway bridge.

While that may sound like the start of a joke, it actually happened to two intrepid farm animals on the Pennsylvania Turnpike over the Mahoning River.

The son of the goat owner called the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and said that the two goats had already been stuck on the ledge for 18 hours.

Despite the ledge only being 8 inches wide, the goats had walked almost 200 feet out onto the bridge before they reached an obstacle that blocked their path. The brown goat in the front somehow managed to turn around so that it could head back to safety – but the white goat was too apprehensive to perform the same maneuver.

According to transit officials, there were numerous status updates on the “Goat Watch” extraction. Engineers and bridge workers were called in to help save the goats from their dizzying situation.

The rescuers did not even worry about the cost of the operation. One of the goat heroes told NPR: “We didn’t even calculate it. We were just trying to be a good neighbor and get the goats back safely.”

Two rescuers climbed into a crane and moved up to the goats’ location. One of the men grabbed the white goat as tightly as we could and deposited it safely on top of the bridge. Then, they tapped a section of the concrete with a pole so they could encourage the brown goat to walk back to safety.

“In this day and age, when things can go terribly wrong, it was great to see things go right,” the bridge’s civil engineer, Steve McCarthy, told NPR. “There was no way I was letting go of that goat.”

How a Mission to Recover a Stolen Wallet Changed the Lives of a Man and Homeless Teen

Most people may not concern themselves with a stranger’s stolen wallet – especially if the wallet in question was thrown into the ocean. But Jimmy Gilleece was determined to help his distressed customer; and his mission to find the wallet ended up changing his life.

Gilleece, who owns a bar in Wrightsville, North Carolina, was approached last month by a female customer who was frantic over her lost wallet. Not only did the wallet contain her ID and cards, but it also contained her wedding ring.

Gilleece started his search for the lost treasure by watching hours and hours of security footage in the bar. After reviewing several different cameras around the bar, he finally saw the wallet sitting on a bench outside. The camera also showed a hooded stranger pocketing the wallet.

The bartender eventually discovered the identity of the thief: 17-year-old River Prathers.

Gilleece confronted the youngster, who said that he had taken the money out of the wallet and thrown it into the sea from a nearby pier.

Gilleece then hired two divers to scour the shore for any sign of the wallet. Finally, one of the divers uncovered a waterlogged wallet with a wedding ring safely tucked inside.

Overwhelmed by the success of their mission, Gilleece then decided to help one more person: the teen who had felt compelled to steal the wallet in the first place.

Rivers had been homeless since he had become estranged from his mother.

“He was living in the woods, and this is when it was 30 degrees outside, and he hadn’t eaten in two days,” Gilleece told CBS. “I could tell he wasn’t a criminal. He was just somebody who needed a little help.”

Instead of turning the security footage over to the police, Gilleece invited Rivers to live with him – and the teen has been a part of the family ever since.

Rivers is now working two jobs and has high hopes for the future – and it’s all thanks to his compassionate benefactor.

“I say thank you to him every day,” Rivers said. “I’d do anything for him.”

One of the World’s Toughest Ivory Bans is Set to Be Approved With Overwhelming Support to Save Elephants

The United Kingdom has just announced that they are introducing one of the toughest bans on ivory sales in the world.

The only ivory products that will be excluded from the ban include musical instruments that were made before 1975 and contain less than 20% ivory; antiques that are over 100 years old and have been assessed by a specialist; items that contain less than 10% ivory that were made prior to 1947; and museum-accredited pieces.

Anyone found in violation of the ban could face up to five years in prison or an “unlimited fine”.

According to the government’s website, the ban was overwhelmingly favored by over 88% of respondents to their survey.

UK Environment Secretary Michael Gove said in a statement: “Ivory should never be seen as a commodity for financial gain or a status symbol, so we will introduce one of the world’s toughest bans on ivory sales to protect elephants for future generations.

“The ban on ivory sales we will bring into law will reaffirm the UK’s global leadership on this critical issue, demonstrating our belief that the abhorrent ivory trade should become a thing of the past.”

The CEO of Tusk Trust, Charlie Mayhew, said: “We are delighted that the Government has listened to our concerns and given the overwhelming public response to their consultation is now moving decisively to introduce tough legislation to ban the trade in ivory in the UK.

“The narrowly defined exemptions are pragmatic. The ban will ensure there is no value for modern day ivory and the tusks of recently poached elephants cannot enter the UK market. We welcome the fact that Ministers are sending such a clear message to the world that the illegal wildlife trade will not be tolerated and every effort will be made to halt the shocking decline in Africa’s elephant population in recent years.”

Toddler Wakes Up Right When Parents Agree to Remove Life Support, Doctors Call it Easter Miracle

It has been called one of the “top ten recoveries of all time”—and the actual timing of this resurrection involving a two-year-old boy became a miracle to those who witnessed it.

Dylan Askin was first rushed to the hospital from his home in Shelton Lock, England at Christmas in 2015. Not only had one of his lungs entirely collapsed, but 80% of the surface area was covered in cysts.

The toddler was diagnosed with pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis, an extremely rare form of lung cancer that affects only one-in-ten-million people.

As the boy continued to fight the disease, he developed bacterial pneumonia and fell into a coma.

Three months later, Dylan’s parents became resigned to their son’s passing when doctors at Queens Medical Hospital told them his condition was not looking good at all. Heartbroken, they agreed to take him off life-support systems on the holy day known to Christians as Good Friday.

“They told us things were looking bleak and that we weren’t going to get him back,” Dylan’s mother Kerry told the Daily Mail. “All the settings on all the machines were at their highest and he was still struggling. We had him christened, all his family came from all over to say goodbye, including his big brother.”

Just as Dylan was about to be let go, however, his heart rate returned to normal and his parents immediately told the doctors to wait. Their resilient youngster was not giving up yet.

During the next two days, the boy had recovered so much that he was sent home on Easter Sunday.

Now, at four years old, Dylan’s family announced this week that he had beaten the cancer entirely and made a full recovery in what his parents and doctors called, “an Easter miracle”.

“I am not massively religious, but I did think it was a miracle,” says Kerry. “When we told our eldest son, he said ‘he’s like Jesus’—rising from the dead.”

City is Using $300,000 in Marijuana Tax Revenue to Fund Safe Streets Program

The city of Portland, Oregon has unveiled a multi-faceted campaign to end traffic fatalities in the municipality – and a large chunk of the program’s funding is coming from cannabis tax revenue.

For the last few years, city residents who are age 21 or older can purchase recreational marijuana (with some limitations). $300,000 in cannabis taxes will be used to fund “Struck” – a public safety initiative dedicated to educating the public on the importance of safe driving.

The campaign is the largest public safety initiative ever launched by the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

“If we are going to reduce fatalities, we need to change how people think when they get behind the wheel,” said City Commissioner Dan Saltzman, who oversees PBOT. “It used to be socially acceptable to drive without a seat belt or drive when people were not quite sober. But with new laws and education campaigns, we changed people’s behavior.”

In addition to the public education funding, the campaign is also initiating renovations to several dozen city streets that have the highest rates of accidents and collisions.

Boy is Finally Rescued After Spending 12 Hours in Los Angeles Sewer System

A 13-year-old boy found himself in deep trouble on Sunday night, but the city of Los Angeles had his back.

Jesse Hernandez had been playing with some other children in an abandoned factory when he fell through a piece of wood and dropped 25-feet into the city sewage system. He then wandered through the maze of pipes to find a way out.

Over 100 Los Angeles firefighters and police officials spent the next 12 hours searching in the drainage system with special cameras to try and find the youngster.

Though the boy was fearful for his own safety, he crawled on this knees through almost an entire mile of piping until he finally saw light coming through a manhole cover and waited to be rescued.

On Monday morning, LA firefighters finally found the youngster, hauled him to safety, rushed him to the hospital for treatment, and reunited him with his family.

The Los Angeles Fire Department released a statement on the rescue, saying: “A tremendous team effort over the past 12 hours resulted in the best outcome, Jesse Hernandez was found alive this morning. We would like to thank the entire Hernandez family for their patience and optimism.

“From start to finish, this was an unprecedented team effort and the LAFD would like to recognize the excellent teamwork among all agencies involved.”

Watch Two Young Boys Come Up With Creative Way of Rescuing Stranded Cat

This adventurous feline was spared one of its 9 lives thanks to the ingenuity of two determined Chinese students.

In a video that was filmed in Liangshan Yi Prefecture in Sichuan Province, two boys can be seen worrying over a cat that got itself trapped on the top of a building canopy.

As the tiny cat can be heard meowing in distress, one of the boys has the bright idea to turn his umbrella upside down and hold it up to the canopy. A second student steps in to help, by holding up the other side of the rescue net.

The two students patiently wait for the cat to accept their offer of assistance. Finally, the cat inches closer to the edge of the canopy, eyes the umbrella ruefully, and eventually finds the courage to jump into its depths.

Once the boys feel the weight of the cat in the umbrella, they gently lower it to the ground and set the feline free.

Colombia’s Top Court Orders Government to Protect Amazon in Landmark Case Initiated by Youth

In a historic ruling, Colombia’s top court has sided with a group of young adults and children who are suing the government for failing to properly protect the Amazon rainforest.

Thanks to the 3-4 ruling, the country’s president and local municipalities must create legislation that will put a stop to deforestation within the next five months.

The court case was facilitated with the help of Dejusticia, a Bogota-based human rights organization. The youth and the nonprofit were able to convince the South American Supreme Court that the Amazon rainforest was essential to their constitutional rights to life, health, food, water, and a safe environment.

Additionally, the youngsters argued that since deforestation is the country’s largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the government’s failure to protect the Amazon was directly violating the rights of future generations as well.

The Court sided with the plaintiffs and even emphasized that the Colombian government had been avoiding the issue for long enough.

“It is clear, despite numerous international commitments, regulations, and jurisprudence on the matter, that the Colombian State has not efficiently tackled the problem of deforestation in the Amazon,” the Court said, according to Dejusticia.

Camila Bustos, a researcher with Dejusticia, said: “We were thrilled with the result. The ruling was beautifully written, and it’s refreshing and novel on the importance of nature, not only for humans but also its intrinsic value. And it recognizes the rights of the future generations.”

Bus Driver Has Been Braiding Girl’s Hair Every Morning Since Mother Passed Away

It has been two years since Isabella Pieri’s mom passed away from a rare illness – but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a community to step in and carry on some of the more female tasks.

Isabella’s father has been doing his best to fulfill the responsibilities of both a mother and a father, but there were certain things he could not figure out, such has helping the 11-year-old with her hair.

At one point, the youngster’s locks got so tangled that her dad had to give her a hair cut.

Once Isabella’s hair had grown out, she became resigned to simply wearing her hair in a no-fuss ponytail – but then she saw her school bus driver, Tracy Dean, braiding another student’s hair.

Isabella got the courage to ask the bus driver if she could braid her hair as well; and Dean has been styling her hair every morning since.

“You can’t be shy; you’ve got to talk to them,” Dean told KSL. “You treat them like your own kids, you know.”

Their morning hair appointments do more than just give Isabella stylish hairdos for the school day, too – they gives her confidence, validation, and a daily dose of tender love from a motherly woman.

“It makes me feel like she’s a mom pretty much to me,” Isabella told KSL. “And it makes me excited for the next day…”

The Salt Lake City, Utah bus driver says she has had a special connection with the kids since she was diagnosed with breast cancer seven years ago.

“I found out I had breast cancer, and that’s one of the things that went through my head — who is going to take care of my little ones? Not that my husband couldn’t do it, but you know, that’s what moms do. They do their kids’ hair,” Dean told the station.

Man Accepts First-of-its-kind Plea Deal That Promotes Healing After Accidental Shooting

A North Carolina courtroom was filled with hugs and tears of happiness after the judge offered up a historic plea deal in a show of “restorative justice”.

One year ago, James Scott Berish accidentally fired a gun through the floor of his apartment, striking 10-year-old Deisy Medina in her sleep. When Berish was told that the bullet had hit a child, he immediately turned himself over to the police before he was even a suspect in the case.

Berish, who is the father of a 2-year-old girl, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a stolen firearm.

While most people might think that the story might end with Berish being thrown in jail, he and the Medina family embarked on a year-long journey of recovery, forgiveness, counseling, and communication through a process called restorative justice.

Restorative justice is a series of steps used to encourage healing between both affected parties of a court case, rather than simply sentencing and punishment. Though it has been employed in Durham courtrooms before, it has never been used for violent felony.

According to WRAL, Deisy and James met for the first time earlier this week – and the encounter was a positive one.

“There was a really beautiful long embrace between James and Deisy. Berish pled guilty to all charges and read an apology letter to the courtroom about his love for Deisy and her family. The Medinas responded by openly expressing their affection and forgiveness towards Berish.

Then, instead of being put behind bars, Berish’s prison sentence was suspended and he was placed under 2-year of supervised probation. Not only that, but the young father agreed to never own a weapon, pay the Medina family $1,380 in restitution, and speak at least two gun-safety events.

“This is why I went to law school, this moment,” assistant district attorney Kendra Montgomery-Blinn told WRAL. “These are the things that we want to do. The criminal justice system is changing and I am so proud to be a part of it.”
