Walmart Clerk Saves Grandfather’s Christmas From Almost Being Scammed Away

If it had not been for the sharp instincts of a Walmart employee, another unsuspecting senior may have been conned out of their savings because of a cleverly executed scam.

Cecil Rodgers of Cincinnati, Ohio has been looking forward to spending Christmas with his family this year – until he received a phone call from someone claiming to be his oldest grandson.

“A voice comes on and says, ‘Papaw, this is your oldest grandson. I’m in trouble,’” Rodgers told WCPO. “He said, ‘I hit a woman’s car and she was seven months pregnant. And they charged me with drunken driving and I’m in jail.’”

Rodger’s “grandson” then put a lawyer on the phone who instructed the senior to send him $2,300 for a bail bond through a direct store-to-store money transfer.

Fearing for his grandson’s wellbeing, Rodgers headed to Walmart with the money in hand.

Before he was able to make the transfer, however, Rodgers briefly mentioned his grandson’s situation to Audrella Taylor, the Walmart clerk who was managing his transaction.

Taylor sensed that something was amiss. She told Rodgers to go home and call his other family members to see if anyone else had heard about his grandson’s accident.

They had not.

Rodgers says that he is not a wealthy man; which is why he is relieved to be spending Christmas with his family without having to worry about the financial pitfalls that would come from losing $2,300 – and it’s all thanks to Taylor’s quick-thinking.

Good Grief: Woman Turns Office Cubicle into Snoopy’s Doghouse For the Holidays

Melissa O’Neill made headlines last year for winning her office’s cubicle-decorating contest by turning her boring old workspace into a cozy log cabin.

This year, in order to secure the first place position once more, O’Neill and her boyfriend Wayne built a massive red replica of Snoopy’s doghouse from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

O’Neill, who works at Toll Brothers Inc. in Horsham, Pennsylvania, says that she had not originally been planning on participating in the decorating contest this year – but her coworkers had already become so excited over the prospect of seeing another masterpiece.

Though the doghouse took a week to build out of wood and cardboard, it’s clear to see that the final design was worth it.

9-Year-old Gives Up $300 Xbox to Buy Blankets For Homeless So Microsoft Sends Him One for Free

A 9-year-old boy from Beachwood, Ohio, has learned that those who give selflessly often receive unexpectedly.

Mikah Frye knows what poverty feels like. About three years ago, his family fell on hard times when they lost their home and were forced to live in a shelter. Every day, Mikah would get a blanket, and every day, the shelter would have to take it back.

This year, when he saw some homeless people out in the cold, he did some quick math. Now that his family was doing better, he knew he would be getting a $300 Xbox this year for Christmas. He figured that, at $10 a blanket, he could buy 30 blankets instead of getting an Xbox — so instead of accepting the game system, he chose to buy the blankets instead. He then gave away each one to a homeless person in need.

“He knew what it was like to not have a blanket at night and have to give it back,” said his grandmother, Terry Brant. “So the first thing he wanted to do was give a blanket that they could keep.”

News of Mikah’s good deed spread quickly, catching the attention of Xbox manufacturer, Microsoft. The company decided to surprise Mikah with a new console that was the same model as the one he had traded for the blankets — and he was in tears.

“When they called and told me, I was just instantly crying on the phone, and I couldn’t believe it,” said Terry. “What’s harder was not telling him.”

Employees led Mikah to the back of the store, where Santa had bags full of gifts, including the coveted Xbox. The family was emotional.

“It’s just amazing — it’s a blessing. Mikah is a blessing to our family, and we thank you very much,” Terry said.

Tea Company Exchanges Fair Trade Status For Giving Back Directly to their Farmers

This article was submitted to GNN by one of our readers.

Tiesta Tea’s co-founders and marketing director just got back from installing a water well for our company’s hibiscus farmers in Nigeria.

Words can hardly describe the feeling of seeing thousands of villagers so genuinely happy to receive one of life’s basic necessities: water. Giving back directly to that community made a life-changing impact, not only for our farmers, but on our entire company.

To summarize our experience, we defied the US travel recommendations and traveled to northern Nigeria (Kano and Jigawa states), an area known for unrest and harsh conditions. With the Boko Haram activity in the region, we knew this would be a risky journey.

RELATEDCompany That Turns Tire Scraps into Shoes Employs Single Mothers Living in Poverty

Our visas were denied through the typical US process. Driven by our determination to give back, however, we had to work with the Nigerian government directly to receive a visa upon arrival.

As a loose leaf tea company, we get all of our hibiscus from farmers in Jigawa, Nigeria, who produce the best hibiscus in the world. Nigeria is one of the few countries that can produce hibiscus because of the hot, dry climate required to grow it.

Learning that women and children spend up to 5 hours every day walking 2-3km to collect water to use for cooking, cleaning, and drinking, we recognized the opportunity to give back to our hibiscus farmers.

MOREBeautiful DIY Craft Kits Teach Kids—And Adults—About World Cultures

We traveled 20 hours to one of those villages and built a water well to give everyone in the community access to healthy, clean water with the turn of a faucet.

Many times we are asked if we are certified Fair Trade, but instead of going through the long, expensive process, we wanted to spend that time and money on giving back directly; something we believe makes a bigger impact.

The Living Well Project is just one part of our Loose Change campaign to make a difference with our tea – because we believe that when small businesses give back directly to the people who supply their products, we can all change the world.

Officer Surprises Boy Who Calls Police Over His Fear That the Grinch Will Steal Christmas

TyLon Pittman was not about to let the Grinch steal Christmas – so he did exactly what kids are supposed to do for emergencies: call 911.

A dispatcher for the Byram Police Department was pleasantly surprised to pick up the phone on Saturday night and hear a 5-year-old boy expressing concern that the Grinch was going to ruin Christmas because “he steals everybody’s Christmas.”

When Officer Lauren Develle heard about the youngster’s worry, she couldn’t resist stopping by his house to reassure him.

WATCHNew Zealand Needs Police Officers– and Their Recruitment Video is Hilariously Compelling

Develle can relate to Tylon’s anxiety, too – she told the Clarion Ledger that she used to watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas every year with her family. Plus, with her blonde hair and petite form, she is often told that she looks like Cindy Lou Who.

Tylon’s parents were initially confused when they heard the knock at the door – and they were even more confused to find a police officer on the porch. Apparently, the 5-year-old had been careful to place the emergency call in secret.

Develle, on the other hand, had no problem reassuring TyLon and his family that if the Grinch showed up, the Byram Police Department of Mississippi would be ready to lock him up.

Tylon’s older brother TeDera, who is home for the holidays after joining the Air Force, was delighted to film the adorable exchange that followed.

“So what are you going to do if he tries to steal your Christmas?” Develle asked TyLon.

“I want y’all to come back to my house and take him to jail,” he firmly replied.

TyLon then explained that he first became worried after seeing a video of the notorious green villain on his phone earlier that night. He even queued up the clip so Develle could see what she was dealing with – but she was unfazed by the danger.

“Well, I’ve gotta get back to work, but I just came by to tell you that the Grinch is not gonna steal your Christmas, okay?” Develle said with a smile. “We can take him to jail if he tries to steal your Christmas.”

After TeDera posted the cute videos on Facebook, they were shared hundreds of thousands of times by people praising Develle’s compassion and patience.

“I can NOT make this up!!!” wrote TeDera. “My 5-year-old brother called the police and said that the Grinch is stealing people’s Christmas and he don’t want him to steal his, so they really came to our house!”

“Officer Develle, thank you sooo much! You made his night!” he added.

Another Big US City is Banning Single-Use Plastic Bags

Plastic Bags-CC velkr0

Boston has joined the ranks of major American cities that are taking steps to curb plastic pollution by banning single-use shopping bags.

The Massachusetts city mayor Marty Walsh signed an ordinance on Sunday stating that if a consumer forgets to bring a reusable bag, a store can charge them 5 cents for a stronger plastic, compostable, or paper bag.

The legislation, which was unanimously approved the City Council last month, will go into full effect next autumn.

MORESan Francisco Officially Declares Itself a No-Styrofoam Zone

Walsh says that in addition to reaping the environmental benefits of banning single-use plastic bags, taxpayers are expected to save a little extra pocket money from city litter clean-up.

Before California became the first US state to issue a plastic bag ban in 2014, Los Angeles County, San Francisco, and other Californian communities had already issued plastic bans. Other major cities and regions that have issued similar legislation include Portland, Oregon and coastal North Carolina.

Couple Leaves Wall Street to Start Ride Service for Chemo Patients After Mom’s Death

Only one year ago, Zach Bolster and his wife Patricia Wu were leading lucrative careers in New York City. Since Bolster’s mom passed away from stage four pancreatic cancer, however, they now run a nonprofit that helps other cancer patients who may not have as loving of a family as them.

35-year-old Bolster used to be the vice president of a hedge fund and Wu worked in real estate. Then Bolster’s mother Gloria, who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, received the cancer diagnosis.

The couple ditched their careers in the Big Apple and moved in with Bolster’s mom so they could look after her during her chemotherapy treatments.

The ex-Wall Street tycoon, Wu, and the rest of the Bolster family were diligent about attending every single one of Gloria’s treatments – and they were surprised to discover that other cancer patients did not have that same support.

Bolster told PEOPLE: “My family was shocked by how many cancer patients had difficulty getting to their chemotherapy treatments. We soon realized what a huge financial and family burden transportation during cancer treatments can be. Some patients resorted to riding the bus, others, unfortunately, missed their treatment altogether.”

While overcoming the hardship of his mother dying six weeks after her diagnosis, Bolster volunteered to personally chauffeur her fellow cancer patients to and from their appointments. Unfortunately, meeting the demands of everyone’s schedule eventually became too complicated to continue on his own.

Inspired by the business model of the Uber ride-sharing service, however, Wu and Bolster used their own money to start the Chemocars nonprofit.

Chemocars works exactly like Uber – except that the organization works with cancer treatment centers to coordinate free rides for chemo patients who need reliable transportation.

Since the couple started Chemocars eight months ago, the service has given away over 2,000 free rides to those in need.

Homeless Man Gets Huge Reward for Standing Guard Over Stranger’s Money in the Rain

After a homeless hero stood guard over a stranger’s money for two and half hours last week in the rain, his grateful new friends are making sure that he is properly rewarded for his kindness.

James John McGeown was walking past a courthouse in Glasgow, Scotland when he saw that a stranger had accidentally left their window rolled down. Not only that, but there was a purse sitting inside the car with a wad of money poking out.

Since McGeown didn’t want anyone to steal the stranger’s $600 (£450), he waited beside the car for its owner to return.

MOREGuy Shows How You Can Now Use Amazon Prime to Instantly Help the Homeless

When the freezing rain became too much for the good Samaritan to bear, he gave the handbag to the receptionist at the lawyer’s office.

The car belonged to John McMonagle, who had been inside the courthouse as a witness to his colleague Alyshia Orford when McGeown wandered by.

Shocked by the stranger’s kindness, McMonagle gave him $50 as a thank you.

“This man is homeless and alcohol dependent and an absolute gentleman,” said McMonagle, according to the Telegraph. “We were even having some banter on realizing I follow the opposite Glasgow team from him, [and] he said, ‘if I knew that I would have taken the bag!’.”

RELATEDHomeless Man Who Used Last $20 to Help Stranded Woman Has Just Bought His Own Home

After they parted ways, however, McMonagle wanted to go one step further. The chip shop owner from Clydebank then created a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for his new acquaintance. The first $6,700 would go exclusively to McGeown, as well as 10% of any additional donations made to the campaign. The rest of the money is going towards charities for the homeless in Glasgow and Clydebank.

In just three days, the page has raised $22,000 (£16,675) for McGeown and his fellow homeless individuals.

McMonagle is currently trying to track down McGeown so he can hand over the money – just in time for Christmas.

Weezer Fan Club Surprises Boy Who Lost His Dad, Sends Special Item That Was Irreplaceable

A special story submitted to GNN by Megan Haas:

We lost my husband a few years ago, and there was a very special Weezer beanie that he and my son shared. (Well, it was my husband’s, but our son stole it every chance he got.)

When we lost Scott, it was the only thing Colin wanted to hang on to. Unfortunately, we moved shortly after, and the beanie was misplaced. Colin was devastated. I spent the next 2+ years trying to locate it, or a replacement.

I wasn’t having any luck, so I took to Facebook. The post was shared all over the world, and then a woman named Lisa saw it and set out on a mission of love for a total stranger.

She was the administrator of the Weezer fan club page and she rallied Weezer fans from all over the world.

They all sent in different band related items to include in a care package to Colin. The treasure trove included a replacement beanie that was found in Canada.

When Colin opened that package it was the most emotional thing I’ve ever witnessed. He put that beanie on immediately—and slept in it that night.

How Chickens and Goats Caused Likelihood of Child Marriage to Plummet by 90%

Caring for a chickens means a free supply of eggs that come with them – but for these sub-Saharan girls, they offer so much more.

While some African regions have outlawed child marriage over the course of the last decade, the practice is still prevalent in certain communities. Girls and woman who are forced into marriage at a young age are less likely to get an education, and much more likely to face negative physical, emotional, health, and social consequences during their adulthood as a result.

Thankfully, the New York City-based nonprofit Population Council has developed a groundbreaking program that has reduced child marriage rates in countries like Ethiopia and Tanzania—and the key to these positive results lie in goats and chickens.

RELATEDFormer Child Brides Win Case in Court: Zimbabwe Bans Child Marriage

The Berhane Hewan project, first launched in 2004, attempted to discourage the practice by recruiting local community leaders to gather villages together, discuss the negative impacts of child marriage, and ask families how they could educate and support their daughters, rather than marrying them off.

During these “community conversations”, many families simply said that they could not afford the cost of sending their daughters to school.

The Berhane Hewan project then took a multi-faced approach to the problem; for starters, families were given money for school supplies (which amounted to about $17 to $22 per year, depending on the country). Secondly, some girls were assigned female mentors to keep them engaged and inspired. Then, for the final approach, families who did not marry off their daughters for at least two years were given either chickens or a goat as a reward.

MOREThousands of Indian Doctors Fight Sexism by Delivering Baby Girls For Free

Instead of being pressured into accepting dowries from prospective husbands, farm animals created new sources of income and resources for struggling village families.

Two years later, the project showed astonishing results.

Families Suddenly Realized They Don’t Have to Carry on With This Practice

According to Berhane Hewan’s research, girls aged 10 to 14 who were enrolled in the two-year program were 90% less likely to be married than the girls who were not enrolled.

Annabel Erulkar, a social scientist with the Population Council, told NPR: “See, one misperception is that child marriage is an intractable practice. My experience is that communities are quite open to change.”

LOOK: Village in India Plants 111 Trees Whenever a Girl is Born

Population Council’s continuing research with the project even showed that the individual methods of child marriage prevention were still surprisingly effective; in communities where girls were only offered two chickens for every year they remained unmarried and in school, girls aged 15 to 17 were half as likely to be married.

When girls aged 12 to 14 were only given educational support, they were 94% less likely to be married than girls who were not enrolled in the program.

“We haven’t studied the long-term impact at this point,” Erulkar told NPR. “But when we go back to the communities we do find that it made a lasting change. Families suddenly realize [they] don’t have to carry on with this practice of child marriage.”

Erulkar also says that even after the program, local community leaders continued the mission of educating families on the dangers of child marriage.

“I am overwhelmed and humbled by the support we’ve received,” says Sara. “Not only from our community but nationwide. I proudly announce we have reached her goal! THANK YOU all for your donations and well wishes.”

Israelis and Palestinians: Taking Peace into their Own Hands

Reprinted with permission from Peace News
December 2nd, 2017

The Israel-Palestinian conflict has been raging for 70 years. Numerous peace attempts have been made at a state level, but a different approach is emerging.

Minds of Peace is being lauded for trying something new in peace negotiations: getting the two Middle Eastern communities to communicate.

”One of the missing components in almost all of the peace processes so far is the participation of the people in the struggle to end the conflict,” said Dr Sapir Handelman, Minds of Peace founder.

“Without public involvement, it is impossible to build an effective peace process and to end the conflict,” he said.

Minds for Peace host public meetings where rival group representatives can negotiate solutions.

“The idea is very simple: You take an Israeli delegation, and a Palestinian delegation, in front of an audience, and the most important thing within the delegation is to seek people from within all the political spectrum and from all walks of life,” Dr. Handelman said.

They have conducted 26 public negotiations in the past 3 years, about difficult issues like borders, Jerusalem, refugees, and security. Almost all ended with agreements.

“Our mission is to translate this result to a mass movement that will lead to the establishment of a major Israeli-Palestinian public negotiating congress with political power,” Dr Handelman said.

“We have two choices…killing each other or living together,” said a congress attendee, Maze. “And the whole Israeli [delegation} and the whole Palestinian [delegation] – all of them said to me ‘we want to live together’.”

Considering that the 82-year-old monk already preaches to over 16 million followers on Twitter, the app has been hailed as a much-needed resource for wisdom and peace.

“Downloading this app has not just improved my life, but the lives of those around me,” read one user review. “There are very few apps that can make the world a better place. This is one of them.”

The Dalai Lama has voiced his support of using technology has an asset to human growth in the past – but he also warns that people should not allow it to govern their lives, either.

“Without technology, humanity has no future, but we have to be careful that we don’t become so mechanized that we lose our human feelings,” he told AFP in 2014.

Paramedic Crew Goes Out of Their Way to Grant Patient’s Last Wish at the Beach

A photo of a paramedic and his patient is being hailed as a beautiful example of medical staff showing care and compassion to those in need.

Graeme Cooper of the Queensland Ambulance Service was taking a palliative patient to the hospital last month when he was asked by the dying woman if it was possible to let her see the ocean one more time.

Cooper and his crewmate Danielle Kellan were more than happy to oblige.

The two paramedics took a detour through Harvey Bay, Queensland and carefully escorted the senior – stretcher and all – onto the beach for one last look.

This was not the final time the pair would go the extra mile (literally). Cooper and Kellan later offered a second field trip to the beach so she could relive the moment. They even got her a bag full of ocean saltwater so she could dip her fingers in a bit of the sea.
