Shoes Make the Man: Guy Hand-Delivers 1,000 Pairs to Hurricane Victims

This Ohio army recruiter wasn’t about to stand by while families in Texas suffered from the aftermath of the hurricane.

Army Sgt. Sutton, members of Shoes 4 the Shoeless, and a team of seven embarked on a mission to help the people of the Port Arthur and Beaumont, Texas after Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on their communities.

The team left Dayton, Ohio with two 26-foot trucks loaded with over 1,000 pairs of shoes, 10,000 pairs of socks and numerous other much-needed supplies. Over 1,000 miles later, the team landed in Port Arthur and immediately went to work unloading the truck full of supplies for the next day’s distribution.

Their mission was to help as many people as possible while bringing smiles and love to everyone they met.”

Man Who Helped Rescue Kidnapped Girl Gives Her His $7,000 Reward

After helping to rescue a young woman who had just escaped her kidnappers, this 65-year-old man then handed over his $7,000 reward because she was “the real hero”.

Earl Melchert first saw 15-year-old Jasmine Block when he returned to his home in Alexandria, Minnesota last month in order to retrieve a diesel can that he had forgotten to grab earlier that day.

The teen had only just escaped from a nearby abandoned house after her kidnappers had gone out to eat. After knocking on the doors of several neighboring homes without any luck, Block swam across a lake and started trekking across Melchert’s field when he spotted her.

Melchert brought Block back to his home where they called the police and organized the arrest of her kidnappers.

Ever since Block first disappeared, law enforcement officials had been offering $7,000 for any information on her whereabouts. When they handed Earl the check for the reward earlier this week, however, he immediately gave it to Block.

“Today we witnessed an incredible example of kindness,” says Alexandria Police Chief Rick Wyffels. “Earl Melchert, the man who made the call everyone was waiting for … was presented with the reward money that had been offered by the Sarah Block family and an anonymous source.”

“What no one expected was the kindness and generosity that came straight from Earl’s heart today. He believes that young lady that came running towards him that September day is the real hero and without hesitation, Earl handed the reward over to her, followed by a big hug.”

“The family needs the money,” Melchert told the New York Times. “To me, yeah, that’s a lot of money, but they need it way worse than I do.”

Race Car Driver Gives Up Chance Of Winning in Order to Save a Dog

Some sports competitors might do anything for that first place trophy – but not Carlos Matos.

The professional car racer is being hailed for giving up the gold in order to ensure the safety of a stray dog that had wandered onto the race track.

Matos was piloting his Ford Fiesta R5 around the second pass of a track in the Constalica Rallye Vouzela competition last month when he saw the pup standing in the middle of the road.

Without hesitating, the driver brought his car – which had been speeding at around 90 miles per hour – to a screeching halt.

Though Matos only had seconds to react, his car stopped on the asphalt just before reaching the dog. Needless to say, the canine immediately took off running to safety after the near-death experience.

Matos then flipped a U-turn and continued on his way – however, the precious seconds that he had sacrificed to save the dog had cost already cost him the victory.

“If the episode were repeated today, I would do exactly the same thing,” he added.

Two Countries Now Protecting Ocean Area Twice the Size of Germany

Two countries have just ensured the preservation of their ocean habitats – and it is being hailed as a huge victory for marine conservation worldwide.

Last week, Chile announced the establishment of two new national marine parks that will protect roughly 240,000 square miles of ocean from commercial fishing and dangerous human activity.

RELATEDSeaWorld Ends Captive Breeding of Orcas at All its Parks

Additionally, the small South Pacific island nation of Niue converted 40% of its exclusive economic waters into a protected marine park. Exclusive economic zones are oceanic areas in which the country can claim exclusive rights for fishing, drilling, and other economic activities.

Given the size of the country, the Niue parks will provide protection to an impressive 49,000 square miles of ocean.

The total of both marine park additions is a whopping 340,000 square miles of protected ocean – which is roughly twice the size of Germany.

Chile’s new marine park alone has become the largest oceanic reserve of its kind in South America. According to National Geographic, the reserve is home to seals, sea lions, albatrosses, penguins, petrels, and whales. The Nieu reserves, on the other hand, will protect the world’s largest population of reef sharks in the world.

When Boy Donates Prized Jersey For Puerto Rico Relief, Soccer Hero Responds in Kind

A 7-year-old boy was hailed for giving up his prized possession in order to help Puerto Rican families affected by the hurricanes – and he was rewarded for his kindness by his all-time favorite sports hero.

Alex Ibarra is a huge soccer fan who owns a collection of 54 different jerseys – but there is one shirt that he treasured above the rest: an autographed Christian Pulisic jersey from the American Outlaws Oakland team.

Ibarra had first gotten the jersey signed during the March World Cup qualifier in San Jose. When he heard about the state of Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, however, he donated the jersey to a raffle that would raise money for hurricane relief efforts.

“I’m raffling it off because I’m trying to raise money for the Puerto Ricans that don’t have food and water,” Alex said. “Puerto Rico’s really important to me because they’re one of our territories.”

While the 7-year-old Junior Capo wasn’t donating the jersey for praise or attention, the news eventually made its way to Christian Pulisic himself.

In recognition of the little philanthropist, Pulisic recorded a special video of himself for Ibarra saying that he would be sending the youngster another signed jersey to replace the one he donated. He also said that he would be making a donation towards Puerto Rico relief efforts to follow Ibarra’s example.

During the AO Oakland’s viewing party for a match against Panama, Ibarra finally got to see the video of his idol thanking him for his generosity – and he was speechless with happiness.

If that wasn’t reward enough for Ibarra, the raffle ended up raising roughly $3,300 for the Hispanic Federation UNIDOS Disaster Relief Fund, too.

Google Company to Restore Cell Coverage to Puerto Rico With 30 Flying Balloons

While Hurricanes Maria and Irma have left Puerto Rico almost entirely without cell coverage, help may be on the way in the form of 30 balloons.

Alphabet, the parenting company of Google, has just been granted permission by the Federal Communications Commission to launch balloons from their Loon Project over the Caribbean island.

With 90% of Puerto Rico without cell coverage, the Loon project balloons would act as replacements for the cell towers that were knocked over by the storm. Each balloon would hover about 12 miles off the ground and provide voice and data coverage for roughly 2,000 square miles (5,000 square kilometers). The coverage would be provided through local carriers.

The Loon project has already been hailed successful for bringing cell coverage to Peru during the country’s flooding last spring.

Touring Group of Acro-Cats Has Helped to Save 200 Other Felines

Not many people believe that cats can be trained, let alone play musical instruments or jump through hoops – but that is exactly what The Amazing Acro-Cats do.

The Acro-Cats are a group of 17 traveling feline performers who do shows across America. Their trainer and caretaker, Samantha Martin, says that she started the group in 2009 after she failed to pursue her dream of being an animal trainer for Hollywood movies and television.

“People started showing up in droves to see these cats,” says Martin. “And even though they sucked – I mean half of the tricks would fail, or the cats would be really distracted – people just thought it was phenomenal.”

Every cat in the circus troupe is a former stray or rescue. While the cats’ performances can sometimes be a little sloppy, Martin says that she enjoys being able to show spectators that cats can be trained – no matter their reputation.

“Dogs will work for love, but you know, cats need to have a little extra motivation,” says Martin in the video below. “People are thrilled no matter what the cats do, because sometimes the cats do great, and other times, the cats are terrible. But people still love it because they see that the cats really control the show.”

Additionally, The Acro-Cats‘ performances have helped hundreds of their fellow felines.

Blakey was told to hold out a branch of leaves for the giraffe – but when Mili bent her head down to snack on the greenery, Blakey spotted a ring dangling from a lanyard around its neck.

Guy Pilots Great Pumpkin Across the Boston Harbor

Whenever autumn rolls around, consumers brace for the pumpkin frenzy to begin – pumpkin food, pumpkin decorations, pumpkin coffee, pumpkin everything.

One event from Boston, Massachusetts, however, propels the seasonal spirit to a whole new level.

31-year-old Christian Ilsley is being hailed for not only growing a 520-pound pumpkin, but rigging it for a voyage across the Boston Harbor.

His notion to do something fantastic with the gourd succeeded, after he piloted the massive veggie-fruit from Jeffries Point to the Fish Pier and back again on Sunday morning.

RELATEDA Six-Story High Rubber Duck Heads for Great Lakes

“I just wanted to grow the biggest pumpkin I could in my backyard,” Christian Ilsley told Steve Annear from the Boston Globe. “But I was just like, ‘All right, I have got to do something with it that’s insane, or fun.’ And I was like, ‘That would be [expletive] amazing if I crossed the harbor — in a pumpkin.’ ”

Pumpkin regattas, though rare, are not new. Every year in Nova Scotia, Canada, a tiny town holds a race where folks take their orange vessels seriously, as you can see in this video.  The same goes for Maine and Oregon.

While the hollowed-out Bostonian squash only traveled at about 2 miles per hour, it made the entire journey in a little over an hour. The trip was mostly uneventful, but the intrepid pilot says that he was a bit nervous when his makeshift boat got caught in the wakes of passing yachts, yet remained seaworthy.

Now THAT’S what we call a great pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Thanks to an online campaign created by comedian and talk show host Stephen Colbert, social media was flooded with awkward photos of celebrities in their teen years – and the pictures managed to raise $1 million.

During a segment on The Late Show, Colbert and television actor Nick Kroll called on their fellow stars to post pre-pubescent pictures of themselves to social media under the hashtag #PuberMe.

After tallying up additional donations from CBS, Nick Kroll, and Colbert’s Americone Dream Fund, the fundraiser was at $999,000.

Lamenting over how they had come up short of $1 million, Colbert remarked: “We came so close, but what can we do? If only we had one more awkward celebrity puberty photo, but we just don’t.”

Then, Broadway heartthrob Lin-Manuel Miranda of the hit musical “Hamilton” leaped onto the stage.

Every cloud has a silver lining—even hurricanes.

It was 2012 when Wizzer the golden retriever first disappeared on a Fort Myers Beach in Florida. His owner, Pete Mayher, assumed that the faithful hound would eventually return – but as the months passed, he eventually lost hope.

Cutest Job Title: Dog Who Works At Post Office is Official Stamp Licker

While dogs may be notorious for holding grudges against the local mailmen, this happy pup actually joined forces with the post office – and he has become a celebrity ever since.

Jax is just one of the faithful employees at the post office in the Scottish village of Portree on the Island of Skye. He may be one of the only workers with four legs, but he is still an important part of the workforce all the same.

His job description? The official stamp licker.

Jax first started at the post office two years ago when he was hired by his owner and boss: Ray Chandler. Ever working day since then, he has been waiting attentively for a customer; and whenever one of the villagers needs to mail a letter, they can simply approach Jax at his counter for a free stamp lick.

Some villagers don’t even visit Jax for the mail – some residents just want to give him a treat.

Chandler says that while Jax takes his job very seriously, he sometimes gets a little overzealous and swallows the entire stamp – but customers don’t tend to mind too much.

“He’s great to have around, because he becomes the focal point,” Ray told the Dodo. “In Britain, everyone tends to talk about the weather, but in the office, people want to talk about Jax. Some people come in just to say hello, or to bring him a treat; others want to give him hugs. He has become quite a character.”
