Indian Parliament Passes Landmark Equal Rights HIV Bill

India’s parliament has just passed a historic bill that guarantees equal rights for citizens with HIV and AIDS.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Prevention and Control) Bill of 2017 was passed unanimously by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The legislation guarantees that Indians suffering from HIV/AIDS are given equal access to medical treatment, employment, housing, religious burial grounds, and education. Failure to comply with the bill will be punishable by law.

The first legislation concerning HIV to be passed in South Asia, the bill also prohibits expressions or publications of hatred, discrimination, or prejudice towards HIV-positive people.

In fact, the law outlines such a broad framework of acceptance, that representatives are hoping it will act as a base for further progressive action in the future.

“It is not the case that before the coming of this Bill, these people [those infected with HIV] were not empowered. But with the passage of this Bill, they will get more powers,” said Minister J.P. Nadda.

According to the Hindu, India’s funding for the second largest Anti-Retroviral Therapy program in the world has caused HIV infections to decrease by 67% and AIDS-related deaths to fall by 54%.

Tesla Surpasses Ford in Market Value

For the first time ever, Tesla, the solar panel manufacturer and new American car company, has passed Ford in stock market value.

Ford has long been an icon of American motor vehicles since their creation 114 years ago. Tesla, however, reached a $48 billion value this week, climbing past Ford at $44 billion. In terms of being the most valued American car company, the two are passed only by General Motors at market worth $51 billion.

The Palo Alto, California-based corporation has sold roughly 40,600 vehicles in the last year, with 25,000 cars shipped out worldwide for their most recent first quarter, greatly surpassing analysts’ expectations. The increase shows an astonishing 69% improvement from this last year’s first quarter alone.

This Mechanic Will Fix Anyone’s Car For Free

The only thing driving this mechanic to such compassionate heights is his love of restoring people’s faiths in humanity.

For the last 15 years, ex-air force mechanic David McCoy has been fixing people’s cars for free.

David and his team of over 40 Car Car volunteers provide free repairs two days out of the month in the Atlanta, Georgia area.

Firefighters Spend Hour Dislodging Kitten From Porsche Engine

How this tiny kitten got stuck in the engine block of a $100,000 sports car is still a mystery – but we do know that it’s thanks to these firefighters that he made it out.

David Burch had just bought a brand new 2016 Porsche Cayenne when he started hearing a mysterious meowing emanating from somewhere in his vicinity.

While he was idling in the Galleria Mall parking garage in Fort Lauderdale, Florida he assumed that the sound was coming from outside the car; but then he realized it was coming from under the hood.

Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue firefighters arrived on the scene and started taking apart the engine compartment bolt by bolt. One hour later, they pulled out a sweet little kitten who was scared, but unharmed.

As they started putting back the engine back together, the cat warmed up to firefighter Eric Fillyaw, who will be bringing the kitten home to his 3-year-old daughter. Eric also took it upon himself to give the sweet little feline a new name: “Porsche”.

New York Neighborhood Noise May Be Healthy For its Residents

Loud workplace noise has been found by many studies to cause harm, but a recent analysis links the sounds of all-night car horn blasts and shouting by bar revelers in New York City’s noisiest neighborhoods to unexplained improvements in body weight and blood pressure for the urban poor living there.

“To be clear, we’re not saying that neighborhood noise causes better health, and a lot of further research is needed to explain the relationship we found between this kind of disturbance and health,” says senior study investigator and NYU Langone Medical Center epidemiologist Dustin Duncan. “It may just be that New York’s noisiest neighborhoods are also the most walkable and that its residents get more exercise that way. But our study shows that neighborhood noise may have an indirect impact on health that is different from known risk factors, such as diet and sedentary lifestyles.”

MOREGood News For Pregnant Women Who Love Drinking Coffee

“It made sense to study neighborhood noise because the neighborhood is where people spend most of their time; the city is a bustling, congested environment; and the health of people being studied is already at risk from the stresses of poverty,” says Duncan.

Specifically, researchers observed relatively lower body mass index (or BMI, a measure of body weight by height) and blood pressure among 102 men and women in the city’s noisiest neighborhoods. All were participants in the NYC Low-Income Housing, Neighborhoods and Health Study and lived in affordable public housing. Most have annual incomes of $25,000 or less. Researchers gauged noise levels based on more than 145,000 noise complaints placed to the city’s 3-1-1 non-emergency phone system in 2014.

Among the key findings of the analysis was that poor people living within a five-block radius with a thousand noise complaints had a BMI 2.72 points lower than if they had lived in a neighborhood that hypothetically had no noise complaints. A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered “normal,” and a BMI of 30 or more constitutes obesity, a major indicator for heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

RELATEDEating More Cheese May Explain Healthier Hearts in France

Similarly, for blood pressure, researchers estimated a 5.34 point drop in systolic pressure (the upper number of two used to measure it) for a neighborhood with 1,000 noise complaints compared to a statistical model of a five-block radius that had none.

According to researchers, the city neighborhoods with the most noise complaints were mostly in Manhattan, and included Times Square in midtown, as well as all of downtown and parts of Queens. Noise complaints were markedly less, they say, in the outer boroughs, including the Bronx and Staten Island.

For the study, participants volunteered to carry GPS tracking devices for a week to track in real time where they spent their spare time and to have their body weight and blood pressure recorded.

Study lead investigator Kosuke Tamura, a postdoctoral fellow at NYU Langone, says other than walkability, social factors and peer pressure could also account for the unexpected findings. Kosuke says some New Yorkers in Manhattan’s noisiest and most fashionable neighborhoods may be more self-conscious about their physical shape and fitness than poor people in less noisy parts of the city, and these factors could be overriding some of the detrimental health effects from neighborhood noise.

Tamura says the team has plans for longer studies that account for population density, as a benchmark for walkability, to better assess the impact of neighborhood noise on health.

Polish Community Honors Injured Man Who Protected Teen From Gang Attack

Amo Singh is being hailed as a hero by the Polish community for his heroic interference with a gang attack in progress.

On March 26th, the 33-year-old man was in his shop in Gloucestershire, England when he and his wife Sandy saw a drama unfolding on their CCTV footage.

Two cars pulled up in front of a 15-year-old Polish teen and his girlfriend who were walking by in front of the store. Two women and six men proceeded to get out of the car and start beating the boy with crowbars.

RELATEDKarma Comes Back Around for Man who Broke Religious Rule to Help Boy

Mortified by the violence, the shopkeeper ignored his wife’s pleas to not interfere and grabbed a baseball bat to try and scare the gang away. The gang then turned their attention on Amo.

The group rained down blows on the young shopkeeper, even going so far as to run him over with their car – twice.

Sandy feared that her husband was dead, but after he and the Polish teen were taken to the hospital, Amo was confirmed to only have bodily bruising, a broken wrist, and a head injury that was treated with stitches.

MOREMan Keeps Restaurant Open to Feed 500 Cops During London Attacks

The Polish community responded by creating a GoFundMe page to raise money for any financial loss Amo’s business may sustain while he is in the hospital. Though the campaign has already raised $13,500, Amo and Sandy say that they would rather give the money to charity.

Another Polish man wrote a letter to the mayor of Krakow asking if they could invite Amo and his family to the city for a weekend as a gesture of thanks for his heroism.

Police are investigating the crime and – despite allegations that the attackers were yelling racial slurs – do not believe it was a racially-motivated attack, according to the BBC.

Man Finds a Career in His Calling to Be Kind (WATCH)

Two years ago, Eugene Yoon changed a man’s life forever. Now, he’s addicted to doing kind things for other people.

The film grad felt like he was being called by God to do a random act of kindness for a total stranger. Eugene then heard about Arthur Renowitzky: a man who had been mugged, shot, and paralyzed eight years previously. Eugene became obsessed with trying to find a way in which Arthur could walk again.

Eugene eventually heard about an exoskeleton from ReWalk Robotics that was designed to help paraplegics walk again – the only problem was that it cost $80,000.

RELATEDTeens Are Instant Heroes For Saving a Boy Who Fell Off a Cliff

Determined to earn the money, Eugene started hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in order to raise awareness for Arthur’s dilemma. When he was half-way through Washington state, his crowdfunding campaign reached its goal.

Overjoyed to see Arthur walk again, Eugene then vowed to continue his kindness career and find someone else in need of a boost.

Eugene turned his attention to a man named Alberto, whom he met on Skid Row in Los Angeles, California. Alberto cares for 24 family members living under one roof, and it’s apparently tough to make ends meet.

So Eugene did what any compassion advocate would do: he hired Alberto as a seamster to start a clothing line.

This Restaurant Chain Might Be The Greenest Grill Out There Today

Ted’s Montana Grill’s isn’t just serving up tasty comfort food – they’re also serving up some of the most impressive eco-friendly practices in the restaurant business today.

The owners of the grill, Ted Turner and LongHorn Steakhouse founder George McKerrow, are celebrating the 15th anniversary the restaurant – now chain – that has few equals in the food industry in terms of environmental consciousness.

For starters, the restaurant is famous for convincing family-owned business Aardvark Straws to start making completely biodegradable paper straws – a product that hasn’t been manufactured in the U.S. since 1970. The partnership has reduced the number of straws in landfills by a whopping 46,000,000 million units per year. And paper straws – now a revitalized industry – have started expanding into other kitchens, food companies, and cruise lines.

RELATEDNow You Can Turn Cremated Remains of Loved Ones into Blossoming Coral Reefs

Ted’s continuous green commitment is also made evident by the menus printed on 100% recycled paper; their energy-efficient light bulbs; their recyclable paper table covers; to-go cups and containers made from corn starch that biodegrades in 50 days; and the restaurant’s ongoing pursuit of being certified as a 99% plastic-free business.

The grill ensures that used oil is recycled to make biodiesel fuel as part of the companywide recycling program. Some restaurants compost where possible, and the Turner Enterprises and Ted’s Montana Grill headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia are powered by solar energy.

Knowing the unique challenges of an industry that uses five times the amount of water used by an average business, the restaurant became a landmark leader in the food industry by earning a “Water Restoration Certificate” for its commitment to restore 5 million gallons of water to the Colorado River Basin.

MOREResearchers Invent ‘Perfect’ Soap Molecule That is Better For the Environment

Ted has also had a hand in bringing back an animal that was close to extinction: the American bison. At the turn of the last century, there was only about 1,000 bison left in the nation. By creating demand for the species, there are now approximately 500,000 in North America – and Ted owns about one fifth of the population..

Co-founder McKerrow says that Ted’s future is to “remain a voice in the industry and a company known for doing good things” – but that’s already reflected in the Ted’s Montana Grill’s motto: “Eat Great, Do Good.”

Maryland Passes Bill Aimed at Stopping Drug “Price Gouging”

A new piece of legislation aimed at stopping the “unconscionable” spikes in drug pricing has been passed with enthusiastic bipartisan support in Maryland.

The bill, which was passed 38-7 in the Senate and 137-2 in the House of Representatives, would allow the state’s attorney general to seek legal action against pharmaceutical companies for price gouging life-saving medications. Should the Maryland Medicaid authority believe that a patient is being charged an unnecessary amount of money for an essential pharmaceutical, the attorney can investigate the claim made against the drug manufacturer.

Manufacturers found guilty of price hiking can be fined up to $10,000 per infraction.

Should the bill be passed by Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, it will be one of the first pieces of legislation to take action against pharmaceutical price gouging in the United States.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

The most noted examples of price gouging during the last few years was the hedge fund manager of Turing Pharmaceuticals, Martin Shkreli, buying the rights to a medication known as Daraprim. Shkreli then upped the price of the drug, which is an essential medication used for treating AIDS, from $13 to $750. Thankfully, Baum Pharmaceuticals was able to create a generic which they then marketed for $1.

The same pharmaceutical company came to the rescue of patients in need of allergy medication after Mylan Pharmaceuticals upped the price of the Epipen to $400 – which is 600% more than they were originally marketed for.

“When a drug company doubles or triples – or multiplies by 50 – the price of medication, it imperils the health and finances of patients and their families, and it threatens public health,” said Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh, according to CBS News. “The new law will give Maryland a necessary tool to combat unjustified and extreme prices for medicines that have long been on the market and that are essential to our health and well-being.”

American Airlines Worker Hailed for Saving 2 Lives in 1 Day

This American Airlines customer service manager was hailed as a hero on Tuesday after he saved two different people in one day.

Christopher Hatcu was working at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina on January 22nd when a customer, later identified as Paul Gonnelli, passed out on the ground from a heart attack.

Hatcu, who used to be a volunteer firefighter, started conducting CPR. Paramedics later said that if Hatcu hadn’t been on the scene to help, Gonnelli wouldn’t have made it.

After Gonnelli was resuscitated, paramedics were told only minutes later that someone else had collapsed in the airport just ten gates down – and Hatcu helped resuscitate them too.

He was then nominated for the Real American Hero award by Gonnelli.

“I suffered a massive heart attack at the gate and was on the ground unresponsive. Chris immediately went into action performing CPR and continued until an airport rescue crew arrived,” Gonnelli wrote, according to WSOC-TV. “Chris saved my life and I would not be writing this if it were not for him.”

Google Rolls Out ‘Fact Check’ Tool to Combat Fake News Worldwide

After “fake news” became such a popular topic during the election season, Google rolled out a fact checking program in October to verify the accuracy of American news articles. In the months since the election, Google has slowly, but surely, introduced it in countries around the world.

On Friday, the tech company announced that – thanks to their tech incubator Jigsaw – the “Fact Check” tag feature has been made available everywhere in every language.

Now whenever someone looks up a news article in the Google Search engine, the Fact Check tag will clearly be displayed. The tag will contain information on who made the verification claim, when they filed the claim, and the facts checked.

RELATEDHigh School Journalists Force Resignation With Their Real News

“This information won’t be available for every search result, and there may be search result pages where different publishers checked the same claim and reached different conclusions,” writes Jigsaw’s product manager Justin Kosslyn. “These fact checks are not Google’s and are presented so people can make more informed judgements.”

“Even though differing conclusions may be presented, we think it’s still helpful for people to understand the degree of consensus around a particular claim and have clear information on which sources agree.”

Clever Pup Opens 4 Doors So He Can Reunite With His Family (WATCH)

Some dogs can’t even understand the basic “sit” and “stay” commands, let alone being smart enough to break out of an animal hospital – which is precisely what General did earlier this week.

General is a Great Pyrenees who was kept in a kennel at the Aquia-Garrisonville Animal Hospital in Stafford, Virginia while his family was on vacation. The hospital’s security footage captured on Sunday night shows the pup opening four different doors – one of which he opened with his mouth – in order to escape.

The canine then strolls very nonchalantly across the parking lot and into the darkness.

Officials at the animal hospital called the dog’s owners, informing them of his masterful escape.

While General’s disappearance may have caused quite a fuss, he was later found resting in the family’s next-door neighbor’s yard.

“General has been found!” wrote the hospital in a Facebook post on Monday. “According to neighbors he was resting in their yard since 11 am this morning. A huge thanks to all that helped General find his way back safely. A special thanks to Stafford Animal Control, Stafford Sheriffs, and the many friends of AGAH who supported us through this stressful time. Officer McCall was the responding Animal Control Officer to return him to us.”

Hospital Grants Dying Patient’s Last Wish For Wine, Cigarette

This Danish man was told that he only had days – maybe even hours – to live before dying of internal bleeding.

His last request? He wanted a final cigarette and glass of wine in front of the sunset.

Carsten Flemming Hansen was too ill for surgery when he was admitted to Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark – and he knew it was only a matter of time until he gave in to his injuries.

RELATEDPolice Officer Fulfills Dying Woman’s Wish to Walk on Beach One Last Time

So Carsten asked his nurse Rikke Kvist if she could help fulfill his final wish. Despite the hospital’s no-smoking policy, Rikke make an exception and wheeled the 71-year-old’s bed onto the hospital’s balcony for one more stogie.

The hospital then released a photo of the contented senior accepting a glass of white wine in front of a picturesque sunset. The picture was captioned: “The family agreed that [in] this situation [what] Carsten Hansen wants [was] more important than the treatment [and] prevention.”

Carsten reportedly was accompanied on the balcony by his family and nurses – and though they were sad about his inevitable passing, they said “it was cozy and there was humor”.

Now You Can Turn Cremated Remains of Loved Ones into Blossoming Coral Reefs

The Ocean Agency / Richard Vevers

Forget the gloom and doom of crowded graveyards – you can now turn the ashes of your loved ones into a blossoming coral reef under the sea.

Set Free at Sea is a Gainesville, Georgia-based organization that builds bases for coral reefs out of cremated remains and eco-friendly materials.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We have since learned that the website link to this organization is no longer in service. The Facebook page is still live, so we added that link instead.

The service supplies a host of benefits; by providing coral organisms with structures on which to build their reefs, Set Free at Sea is helping dozens of struggling ecosystems thrive amidst the changing underwater climate. Family members also feel more at peace with death knowing that their loved ones – whether they were a relative or a pet – are contributing to the circle of life in a helpful way.

RELATEDChanging The Expensive Funeral Game, She’s ‘The Green Reaper’

Coral reefs are created when free-swimming coral larvae attach to hard surfaces usually found around the coasts of islands or shorelines. The tiny organisms then form colonies that stretch into reef structures, which provides valuable shelter and habitats for other marine life, such as algae, sea grass, fish, sponges, anemones, eels, and crustaceans.

By combining an organic live-rock mixture with cremated remains, the ashes of the deceased are sculpted and cured into a structure that is then placed in different locations on the ocean floor, providing the basis for future reefs. Set Free at Sea even films the placing of the sculpture so families can see where their loved one is laid to rest.

The organization gives annual updates on the reefs development and progress so customers can see how the structure is helping to save its underwater ecosystem.

MOREThis Doctor Broke The Law To Engineer a Better Nursing Home, And the Death Rate Plummeted

The entire package provided by the service includes an engraved tabletop replica of the reef structure; a DVD of the reef’s placement; GPS coordinates of the reef’s location; framed certificates; and a flower arrangement that is lowered with the memorial.

The service will be shipping 30 cremated structures out to sea from Miami in June, and again in October. When spring of 2018 rolls around, the organization will be setting sail for 30 more services from Indonesia and the Philippines.

The founder of Set Free at Sea, Amber Hoagland, is no stranger to grief and struggle herself. In fact, she is quite familiar with it.

WATCHListen To This Concrete Organ Played By The Ocean

“I started this business after leaving an abusive marriage with my four small children,” artistic director Amber Hoagland told Good News Network. “Homeless, I basically stopped making excuses and started making solutions. I got my degree and dove into my artistic passions and never stopped.”

The product of her innovation has resulted in dozens of successful alternative underwater burials. Not to mention that 10% of the business’s sales go towards nonprofit organizations dedicated to removing trash and waste from the oceans.

“Set Free At Sea’s top priority is to make everlasting memories for you and your loved one. Simply put; our goal is to promote life even after we pass.”

California Sun Produces So Much Power That Electricity Prices Turn Negative

California girls aren’t the only things that are melting popsicles this spring.

This new report shows that the beautiful, blazin’ California sun was so strong on the state’s solar panels last month, that – for the first time ever – electricity prices dropped into the negative.

The data, which was released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, showed that the solar power harnessed by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) accounted for almost 40% of the net amount of electricity used between 11AM and 2PM.

RELATEDCalifornia Breaks Solar Record, Generates Enough Electricity for 6 Million Homes

These record-breaking numbers are due largely in part to an almost 50% growth in utility-scale solar photovoltaic installed capacity in 2016, with about 5.4 gigawatts of net-metered distributed solar capacity recorded in December.

Unfortunately, this does not mean that Californian consumers will see an especially large drop in utility prices since the price depends on the averaged value – but the ever-expanding solar energy market is still definitely worth celebrating.

On July 12, several large solar plants in the Golden State briefly produced a record-breaking 8,030 megawatts of electricity, generating enough energy to power over 6 million homes. On that day in particular, the generated power was nearly twice the amount of solar energy produced two years previously — and that is only counting the electricity produced at plants. Thousands of rooftop solar panels around the state have the capacity to produce an additional 50% of that record amount.

RELATEDHeavy Rains and Snow Helping California Out of Drought

This solar production record demonstrates that the state is making significant strides toward meeting the state’s goal of reaching 33% renewables by 2020.

Electricity demand in California also tends to peak during the summer months. However, in late winter and early spring, demand is at its annual minimum, but solar output, while not at its highest, is increasing as the days grow longer and the sun gets higher in the sky. Although the sun is at a similar angle in September and October, electricity demand is still relatively high, leading to lower solar generation shares than seen in March.

Taiwan Becomes First Asian Country to Ban Consumption of Dogs, Cats

In a landmark amendment to their pre-existing laws, Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to totally ban the consumption of dog and cat meat.

According to the Animals Asia Foundation, the Animal Protection Act enforced on the island only prohibited the slaughter and marketing of pet meats. Now, the actual act of eating the substance is punishable by up to $8,000 in fines.

The legislature also includes further reenforcement on other animal cruelty-related offenses. Animal abuse can now result in up to $60,000 in fines or two years in prison, while repeat offenders can be jailed for up to five years.

RELATEDAnimal Activist Makes Historic Deal With Meat Market to Close All Slaughterhouses

The amendments were passed earlier this week by the Legislative Yuan, leaving them in the capable hands of the Taiwanese Cabinet and the Presidential Office. Once signed, the ban could go into full effect by the end of April.

Though Taiwan is the first country to take such a progressive stance, the continuous pressure from Asian animal rights organizations is resulting in more and more positive change.

MOREAnimal Activist Makes Historic Deal With Meat Market to Close All Slaughterhouses

In December, 22 vendors of South Korea’s largest meat market agreed to cease the slaughter of canines, leading them to shut down their facilities. The vendors are receiving financial support from the city until they have the resources to pursue other jobs and careers as part of the districts efforts to reform the market.

Activists within the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation also managed to convince the Gupo Meat Market to close not only their dog and cat slaughterhouses – but their duck, chicken, and rabbit facilities as well.

Chicago City Buildings to be Powered by 100% Renewable Energy

Government representatives of Chicago just announced their commitment to converting their city pulling buildings’ electricity supply to 100% renewable energy by 2025. When implemented, Chicago will be the largest major city in the country to have a 100% renewable energy supply for its public buildings.

“As the Trump administration pulls back on building a clean energy economy, Chicago is doubling down,” Mayor Emanuel said. “By committing the energy used to power our public buildings to wind and solar energy, we are sending a clear signal that we remain committed to building a 21st century economy here in Chicago.”

Collectively the City, Chicago Public Schools (CPS), the Park District, Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), and the City Colleges of Chicago used nearly 1.8 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2016, amounting to 8% of all electricity use in Chicago; it is the equivalent to powering approximately 295,000 Chicago homes. The electricity used by these agencies is the same amount of energy created by over 300 wind turbines in one year. The commitment will be met through a combination of acquiring renewable energy credits, utility-supplied renewable energy via Illinois’ Renewable Portfolio Standard, and on-site generation. Initial purchases will begin in 2018 and 2019.

RELATEDLas Vegas Now Draws 100% of its Energy From Renewables

“Today’s action is a historic step forward in establishing Chicago as a clean energy leader,” said Jack Darin, Illinois Sierra Club President. “By moving boldly to repower its public buildings with renewable energy like wind and solar, Chicago is leading by example at a time when local leadership is more important than ever. While President Trump and his administration would reverse America’s progress on climate change and clean energy, Mayor Emanuel is ensuring that Chicago will move forward, and that its residents will benefit from the good jobs and cleaner air that come from renewable energy projects. We look forward to working with the Mayor, community leaders, and the people of Chicago to achieve this bold goal on the path to eventually powering all of Chicago with 100% clean energy.”

Mayor Emanuel announced Chicago’s new commitment on the rooftop of Shedd Aquarium, which has installed over 900 solar panels in an effort to reduce their energy use by 50% by 2020. As a member of Mayor Emanuel’s Retrofit Chicago Energy Challenge, Shedd Aquarium has also retrofitted nearly 1,000 of its own light bulbs to LED and installed a 60,000 pound, one-megawatt battery on their own property.

The City and its sister agencies have already made significant strides to green their energy supply. In 2013, the City eliminated coal from the over 1 billion kilowatt hours in electricity it buys on an annual basis. A dozen CPS schools have had solar arrays installed since 2009, while the Park District and City Colleges currently procure large portions of their energy use from renewable sources.

MORENew Mexico to Pass First Law Prohibiting “Lunch Shaming”

Earlier this week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the City of Chicago earned a 2017 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award. It is given annually to honor organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protecting the environment through energy efficiency.

Last week, the Mayor announced that the Smart Lighting Project will start on the South and West Sides this summer. Once approved by City Council, the Chicago Smart Lighting Project will replace 270,000 of Chicago’s light fixtures and add a management system that will give the city a state-of-the-art smart lighting grid.

Today’s announcement builds on the strong environmental track record built since 2011. In January, Mayor Emanuel announced that Chicago has reduced its carbon emissions by seven percent from 2010 to 2015. The reduction in greenhouse gases came at the same time Chicago saw a 25,000 person increase in its population and 12 percent growth in the region’s economy and jobs within the city. The emissions reduction, equivalent to shutting down a coal power plant for eight months, compares to a one percent increase in nationwide emissions from 2009 to 2014.

New Mexico to Pass First Law Prohibiting “Lunch Shaming”

A new law that was unanimously passed in the House of Representatives last week could become the first piece of legislation in the country to prohibit the act of student “lunch shaming”.

Lunch shaming is considered the practice of shaming or humiliating school children who are behind on their meal fees. Examples of this practice have surfaced around the country; one boy in Alabama was reportedly sent home with a stamp on his arm reading: “I need lunch money”. Lunch ladies have been forced to throw out students’ hot meals because they didn’t have enough funds on their student accounts. Other schools have made children wipe down tables and wash dishes as payment for their meals.

The Hunger-Free Students’ Bill of Rights, however, would prevent children from being punished for meal fees.

“Children whose parents or caregivers owe money for school lunch will no longer have to miss meals or face public embarrassment in front of their peers,” said Jennifer Ramo, executive director of New Mexico Appleseed, the organization the spear-headed the bill. “No child should be forced to wipe down cafeteria tables or throw away a meal because of a debt. We’re urging Governor Martinez to make New Mexico a leader in the fight against child hunger by signing this first-of-its-kind legislation.”

MORENew Jersey to Become First State That Bans Declawing

“This bill draws a line in the sand between the student and the unpaid school meal fees that their parents or guardians owe, oftentimes because they cannot afford to pay on time,” continued Ramo. “Many children count on school meals for the nutrition they need to be able to learn and thrive in the classroom.”

The bill requires all New Mexican schools to serve students healthy meals, no matter their financial standing. It also outlines efforts that will make it easier for low-income families to apply for free meals, if they haven’t automatically been registered already.

“All school districts that participate in the National School Lunch Program are now required to develop a policy on addressing unpaid school meal fees. States can develop a statewide policy to ensure fairness for all their students,” said Crystal FitzSimons, director of school and out-of-school-time programs at the Food Research & Action Center, the nation’s leading anti-hunger advocacy organization. “New Mexico’s bill protects the needs of students to have access to healthy meals at school, while ensuring that school administrators are able to qualify eligible students for free school meals. Other states should follow New Mexico’s lead.”

Islands Encourage Healthy Eating by Banning Western Junk Food

As a means of encouraging healthier eating habits in the province, this group of south Pacific Islands are issuing a ban on the import of western junk food.

The Torba area of Vanuatu has a population of roughly 10,000 people – many of which are farmers. The local government believes that by prohibiting islanders from having access to easy convenience food, residents will be more inclined to support their local farmers, as well as engage in healthier eating habits.

Torba community leaders hope that by demanding local tourist hotspots to serve only locally-grown food, they will become the only Vanuatu province to be 100% organic, according to the Guardian.

The region plans on passing local legislation that would prohibit importing any foreign foods – not just biscuits, sweets, and rice. Considering much of the island’s locally-grown produce is rich in nutrients – like fish, root vegetables, fruits, and crustaceans – officials believe that they they can survive just fine without any kind of foreign products.

“At the moment we have an infiltration of junk food from overseas,” said Father Luc Dini, head of the local tourism council. “It is easy to boil noodles or rice, but they have almost no nutritional value and there is no need to eat imported food when we have so much local food grown organically on our islands.”

Security Guard Stops Swedish Terrorist Attack in its Tire Tracks

This 27-year-old security guard is responsible for saving dozens of lives after a deranged driver started driving a truck towards Swedish parliament on Friday.

Santiago Cueva was sitting idly in his van near Åhlens, a department store on Drottninggatan in Stockholm, Sweden, when he saw a large truck driving down the road.

Since Drottninggatan is a popular city walkway, hundreds of pedestrians and onlookers were running out of the way of the veering vehicle. Santiago, however, started his van and accelerated into the oncoming truck, causing the driver to lose control and crash into the store. Santiago then jumped out of his van to help the injured pedestrians.

While police rushed to the scene, the driver reportedly escaped into the panicked crowds. The suspect has since been arrested and – according to his lawyer – has recently confessed to the act as a “terrorist crime”.

But if the suspect had been allowed to keep driving, his crimes may have been much worse – the Swedish Parliament building was about 550 yards down the Drottninggatan.

“I was not scared,” Ecuador-born Santiago told the Daily Mail Online. “It was actually a strange feeling when it happened. The lorry was coming towards me and all my focus was on helping protect people in some way. So I drove my van in front of it in order to stop it from getting any further.”
