LEGO Bricks on Sale Now Are Plant-based Instead of Plastic

As a means of pushing their company towards sustainability, LEGO has just announced that they will soon be selling bricks made from plant-based plastic.

The natural polyethylene plastic, which is sourced from sugar cane, will be used for a line of botanical-themed LEGO pieces that will be included in box sets later this year. While they aren’t completely biodegradable, they are much more recyclable than their crude oil counterparts. Plus, the sugarcane used for the polyethylene is sustainably sourced.

The corporation has already spent the last 3 years pouring millions of dollars into developing renewable substitutes for their current oil-based plastic.

The initiative is part of the Danish toy company’s goal of achieving 100% sustainability by 2030.

Tim Brooks, the firm’s vice-president of environmental responsibility, said: “This is a great first step in our ambitious commitment of making all Lego bricks using sustainable materials.”

Canadian Man Offers to Share His “Stolen Land” With First Nations Family

Joel Holmberg was tired of seeing racist language against the First Nations on social media. So instead of allowing such prejudice to flourish, the 45-year-old took to Facebook with an offer of kindness and camaraderie.

Holmberg, who owns 5 acres of land near Barrhead in Alberta, Canada, offered to share his land with a First Nations family for free.

Holmberg writes: “Any First Nations family who just wants to live on the land, hunt, fish, grow foods, and spend their life immersed in their culture, raising their kids traditionally, should get a hold of me. I have space for a family to live here, lots of moose around, and plenty of space to grow foods.

The Alberta resident says that he had been playing with the idea of sharing his land for a few years now, but he finally became spurred to take action after social media became inflamed over a recent hate crime in Saskatchewan.

RELATEDFarmer Returns 700 Acres of California Coast to Native American Tribe

“My 5 acres – though it constitutes my life’s work and I’ll be paying for it another 20 years – in reality, it is stolen land and I know that.

“Our acreage can be a model of how things should go in Canada.”

Since making the post on Facebook, Holmberg has received over 100 messages concerning his offer. According to The Guardian, indigenous elders have contacted him about performing ceremonies on the land. Chinese, Sikh, and Muslim communities in Canada have also sent him messages saying that he had inspired them to take on similar initiatives.

The 45-year-old will be responding to messages and giving tours of the acreage to interested families during the coming weeks in hopes that he will find the right folks.

“If you are indigenous, have kids, are clean and sober, and want to be free on the land, we have a home for you here,” says Holmberg. “No rent, no bills, just live free, far from the big s****y cities.”

How to Find Your Passion

The Lesson: If you’ve reached a point in your life where you need to find the one thing that deserves all of your creative energy, it can be frustrating trying to nail down which of your passions deserves your attention. But Jason Silva has a method of how you can “follow the trail of neurochemistry” to find your ultimate passion.

Notable Excerpt: “Here’s how you find your passion, if you don’t know it: you make a list of 15 things that you’re really curious about. Elizabeth Gilbert, who wrote ‘Eat, Pray, Love’, often talks about the pressure of knowing your passion, and she says that if you don’t know your passion, at least chase curiosity. Because at least you know things that you’re curious about, so you make a list of 15 things. Now what you’re gonna do is create a kind of Venn diagram and you’re gonna find where these things overlap. Where do 3 to 5 of those 15 things that you’re curious about overlap?”

3 Invigorating Tips for Kicking Boredom if You’re in Recovery

Daniela Elena on Pixabay

“An idle mind is the devil’s playground,” the saying goes. And if you’re one of the roughly 10% of people in this country who are reportedly in recovery from drug or alcohol addiction, unattended boredom can be a trigger for relapse.

Everyone gets bored from time to time. When day-to-day life seems tedious and lackluster, a lack of motivation or creative inspiration may be the reason. There may even be a medical cause, such as an underlying diagnosis of depression that may be contributing to a general lack of interest in daily activities.

For people in recovery, these same dynamics can also be the source of boredom—or there may be other causes unique to healing from a substance use disorder. For example, whereas in active addiction a person may have become accustomed to getting “high,” in sobriety (following detox and treatment) that experience of intense and immediate, drug-induced euphoria is no longer there. The result can be a phenomenon known as “anhedonia,” which is not uncommon in recovery. Anhedonia is a psychological condition characterized by the inability to derive pleasure from normally pleasurable acts.

CHECK OUT: How Mindfulness Shattered My Pain Perception

Second, successful recovery happens gradually, over time, with the daily practice and cultivation of healthy lifestyle choices. Good sleep hygiene. A nutritious diet. Regular exercise. Mindful meditation. Weekly attendance in a recovery support group like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. As these daily ins and outs of recovery become habitual, it’s not uncommon for them to lose their novelty and shine. Like any routine, they can grow tedious.

How, then, can you stay engaged and motivated in your recovery when boredom hits? Here are some tips to help you harness boredom in the service of personal growth and renewed enthusiasm for sober living:

  1. Accept and embrace your boredom. You need to be aware and accepting of what you’re feeling before you can channel it in a positive direction. When I work with clients in early recovery, we spend a lot of time getting connected to inner emotions like boredom, which can often lie outside the realm of conscious awareness. One way you can do this on your own is to spend just a few minutes daily connecting with your breath and mindfully scanning your body for any thoughts or sensations you may be experiencing. When these come, take note of them matter-of-factly and non-judgmentally. Then let your attention go back to your breath. The more attuned and even welcoming you are to your boredom, the better prepared you’ll be for addressing it constructively.
  2. Turn off your autopilot mode by taking periodic mindfulness breaks. If you’re bored, it may be because you have been operating on autopilot, having become so habituated to the motions of a daily recovery routine that you could do them in your sleep. What you may need is to re-awaken your five senses to the beauty and wonder of the world around you. Consider taking a periodic mindfulness break—even just one daily—to pause, breathe, engage all five senses and say “thank you” for the present moment. One of the best ways to do this is getting out in nature.
  3. “Do one thing every day that scares you.” I can’t think of a better cure for boredom than this recommendation from the humanitarian and former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. For some of us, “one thing every day” may be too ambitious. If so, try adding just one scary new thing to your life that you can commit to for the next couple of months—and that will make you a more courageous and adventurous person. Are you terrified of public speaking? Join a Toastmaster’s club or sign up for an improv comedy class. Are you introverted and afraid to meet new people? Practice starting conversations when you’re in line at the grocery store or doing errands.

Power is Restored to Puerto Rican School Thanks to Boy’s Generous Heart

If it had not been for the kindness of one boy from Illinois, these Puerto Rican students may have been forced to continue sitting through their classes in darkness.

7-year-old Avery Huddleston was heartbroken by the amount of damage sustained by the Caribbean territory following Hurricane Irma in September. So instead of celebrating his birthday this year and receiving gifts for himself, the first grader asked for school supplies to be donated to Puerto Rican schools.

Ameren electrical workers ended up distributing the supplies to the students of the La Escuela Rafael de Jesus elementary school in Rio Grande – but while they were there, they noticed that almost all of the classroom lights were still out.

Even though the facility had largely been without electricity since the hurricane, however, the workers noticed that some of the lights in the building were still on. Upon investigating the circuitry, they were able to repair the broken transformer and restore power to the building.

The students were so overjoyed by the lights coming back on, the youngsters started dancing, cheering, and screaming with happiness.

Ameren worker Mike Beardsley told KTVI: “If it wasn’t for one kind gesture by Avery, a little 7-year-old boy, they’d still be sitting in the dark at this school.”

Doctors Turn Down Pay Raise So Their Fellow Health Care Workers Can Get a Raise Instead

Instead of accepting a pay raise for themselves, over 250 Québec doctors have asked the provincial government to give the pay raise to overworked nurses and clerks.

Following a newly-proposed medical budget that would award a salary hike for Québec doctors, a representational group of physicians and medical students wrote an open letter in which they insisted that their fellow health care workers deserved better wages and working conditions.

“We, Québec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increases negotiated by our medical federations.

“These increases are all the more shocking because our nurses, clerks, and other professionals face very difficult working conditions, while our patients live with the lack of access to required services because of the drastic cuts in recent years and the centralization of power in the Ministry of Health. The only thing that seems to be immune to the cuts is our salaries…

“Contrary to the Prime Minister’s statements, we believe that there is a way to redistribute the resources of the Québec health system to promote the health of the population and meet the needs of patients without pushing workers to the end.

“We, Québec doctors, are asking that the salary increases granted to physicians be canceled and that the resources of the system be better distributed for the good of the health care workers and to provide health services worthy to the people of Québec.”

Currently, the average medical specialist within the Canadian province reportedly makes about $403,537 a year. According to the new budget, the medical association would hike up allocated funds for physician salaries from $4.7 billion to $5.4 billion in 2023.

Québec’s health minister, Gaétan Barrette, said that he had no problem with the collective rejection of the pay raise. Earlier this week, he told media sources: “If they feel they are overpaid, they can leave the money on the table. I guarantee you I can make good use of it.”

Time will tell how the budget will be reshaped, but one thing is for sure – the doctors of Québec have made it clear that they are dedicated to taking care of more than just themselves.

Less-Adopted Black Cats Have More Suitors Thanks to New Marvel Movie

Despite their winning personalities, black cats will allegedly languish in American animal shelters for longer periods of time than their differently-colored counterparts.

That’s because western cultures often view black cats as bad luck because they were thought to be the companions of witches in the 14th century.

But now thanks to Black Panther, the latest Marvel flick to hit movie theaters, black cats are being adopted by the dozens, according to one resident of Durango, Colorado.

RELATEDDying Man Pleads With Facebook to Find Home For His Dog and the Response is Overwhelming

The social media user wrote in a blog post: “Unexpected Benefit of Black Panther: my local pet shelters went from having something like 50-60 black cats between them to having NONE, because they’ve all been adopted out and named after the characters.

“’T’challa’ is the most popular, but there are a fair number of ‘Okoye’s and ‘Shuri’s as well. And one very confused Elderly Humane Society Volunteer wondering why someone would name such a sweet cat ‘Killmonger’,” they added.

If you’re concerned about whether this is a short-lived fad that will end in the cats being returned a while time later, the writer reassures us by saying that the adoption process of the local shelters is extremely stringent.

And while an ASPCA spokesperson of New York City reportedly told media sources that they have seen no particular increase in black cat adoptions, the blogger goes on to say that at least cat adoptions are up in general – even if it’s just in one Colorado town.

Additionally, one movie theater in Dallas reportedly held an adoption event where anyone who adopted a black cat was given two free movie tickets to see Black Panther. According to the Dallas Observer, the shelter did not have enough cats to fulfill the demand.

When Old Dog Won’t Play With Anything But Discontinued Toy, PetSmart Folks Don’t Give Up

12-year-old Jaxon the dog refuses to play with anything if it isn’t his green dragon toy.

His owner, Kelli Brown of Bowling Green, Kentucky, has tried to replace “Greenie” the dog toy multiple times, but her senior pup has stubbornly refused to change his mind.

“We’ve tried other green toys over the years, he won’t have anything to do with them,” Brown wrote on Twitter. “And– there was a red and yellow version of his fave toy– same size, same fabric, just a different color and no dice. What a weirdo.”

When Greenie finally started to deteriorate beyond repair, Brown started searching the internet for a replacement – but the toy had been discontinued by the manufacturing company.

She then took to Twitter and begged for help finding another Greenie.

Luckily, her tweet was spotted by a PetSmart worker named Ken.

Ken began her search in the clearance section of the store she worked at. When she couldn’t find any of the dragons, she posted about the dilemma on a PetSmart employee Facebook page until they were all able to dig up a dozen of the retired toys.

Brown received them in the mail one month after her initial plea.

Needless to say, the senior canine was overjoyed to find himself suddenly surrounded by a dozen of his precious toys.

“Happy to say the power of the internet came through BIG TIME,” says Brown. “[Jaxon] is so happy right now… thank you all!!!”

Grocery Store Unveils World’s First Plastic-Free Aisle

The world’s first plastic-free grocery store aisle has just been unveiled in Amsterdam, and Dutch legislators are hoping that it will encourage the UK to do something similar.

Dutch grocery store chain Ekoplaza unveiled the aisle at their Jan Pieter Heijestraat location on Wednesday. The aisle includes over 700 products – such as fruits, vegetables, cereals, condiments, beverages, snacks, meats, and non-perishables – all of which are packaged in recyclable and biodegradable materials.

The company’s 70 other branches are set to roll out similar aisles by the end of this year.

“Plastic-free aisles are an important stepping stone to a brighter future for food and drink,” Ekoplaza chief executive, Erik Does, said in a statement. “We know that our customers are sick to death of products laden in layer after layer of thick plastic packaging.”

RELATEDSweden Opens World’s First Mall for Repaired and Recycled Goods

The project, which was orchestrated by environmental group A Plastic Planet, is just one of many initiatives that have recently been taken to ditch plastic packaging. Replacing the harmful material has been a popular subject of legislation following the release of the BBC documentary series Blue Planet II, which highlighted the scourge of oceanic pollution.

A Plastic Planet’s co-founder Sian Sutherland said: “The introduction of the world’s first Plastic Free Aisle represents a landmark moment for the global fight against plastic pollution. For decades shoppers have been sold the lie that we can’t live without plastic in food and drink. A Plastic Free Aisle dispels all that. Finally we can see a future where the public have a choice about whether to buy plastic or plastic-free.”

“There is absolutely no logic in wrapping something as fleeting as food in something as indestructible as plastic. Europe’s biggest supermarkets must follow Ekoplaza’s lead and introduce a plastic-free aisle at the earliest opportunity to help turn off the plastic tap.”

Before They Went on Strike, Teachers Packed Lunches to Make Sure Kids Wouldn’t Miss a Meal

While these hardy educators are not willing to back down from demanding better pay and benefits, they are taking time off from the picket line to feed their hungry students.

Teachers and school staff of West Virginia went on strike last week as a means of demanding a pay raise from Gov. Jim Justice (R). Since many state students rely on free or reduced-price school lunches for food, however, the educators packed hundreds of lunches for their low-income pupils.

How Volcanoes Could Be Used to Build Energy Efficient Cities of the Future

Cities of the Future May be Built With Locally Available Volcanic Ash
Study finds adding volcanic ash reduces the overall energy required to manufacture concrete.
Written by Jennifer Chu
MIT News

MIT engineers working with scientists in Kuwait have found that volcanic rocks, when pulverized into a fine ash, can be used as a sustainable additive in concrete structures.

In a paper published online in the Journal of Cleaner Production, the researchers report that, by replacing a certain percentage of traditional cement with volcanic ash, they can reduce a concrete structure’s “embodied energy,” or the total energy that goes into making concrete. According to their calculations, it takes 16 percent less energy to construct a pilot neighborhood with 26 concrete buildings made with 50 percent volcanic ash, compared with the energy it takes to make the same structures entirely of traditional Portland cement.

When they ground volcanic ash down to increasingly small particle sizes, the researchers found that a mixture of the finer powder and Portland cement produced stronger concrete structures, compared with those made from cement alone. However, the process of grinding volcanic ash down to such fine particles requires energy, which in turn increases the resulting structure’s embodied energy. There is, then, a tradeoff between a concrete structure’s strength and its embodied energy, when volcanic ash is used.

Based on experiments with various concrete and volcanic ash mixtures, and calculations of the resulting structure’s embodied energy, the researchers have mapped out the relationship between strength and embodied energy. They say engineers can use this relationship as a blueprint of sorts to help them choose, for instance, the percent of cement they would want to replace with volcanic ash to produce a given structure.

RELATEDElon Musk Gets Another Green Light for His Speedy Hyperloop Tunnel From NYC to DC

“You can customize this,” says Oral Buyukozturk, a professor in MIT’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). “If it is for a traffic block, for example, where you may not need as much strength as, say, for a high-rise building. So you could produce those things with much less energy. That is huge if you think of the amount of concrete that’s used over the world.”

Concrete is the most abundantly used material in the world, second only to water. The manufacturing of concrete involves first blasting rocks such as limestone out from quarries, then transporting the rocks to mills, where they are further crushed and treated under high temperature through various processes resulting in the production of cement.

Such energy-intensive processes create a significant environmental footprint; the production of traditional Portland cement accounts for about 5 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. To cut down on these emissions, Buyukozturk and others have been looking for sustainable additives and alternatives to cement.

MORENetherlands to Build Roads With Recycled Plastic From the Ocean

Volcanic ash has several sustainable advantages as an additive in manufacturing concrete: The rocky material, which lies in ample supply around active and inactive volcanoes around the world, is naturally available; it is typically considered a waste material, as people typically do not use it for any widespread purpose; some volcanic ashes have intrinsic, “pozzolonic” properties, meaning that, in powder form, the ash with a reduced amount of cement can naturally bind with water and other materials to form cement-like pastes.

“Cement production takes a lot of energy because there are high temperatures involved, and it’s a multistage process,” says Chin, who with Kupwade-Patil led much of the group’s experimental work as a student in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) with Buyukozturk. “That’s the main motivation for trying to find an alternative. Volcanic ash forms under high heat and high pressure, and nature kind of does all those chemical reactions for us.”

The team looked first at how much energy it would take to make concrete from a mixture of cement and volcanic ash, versus cement alone. To do this, the researchers consulted several databases in which others had calculated the embodied energy associated with various industrial processes, such as the energy that goes into crushing rock or curing cement. The researchers picked through the databases to assemble the individual processes associated with producing traditional cement and cement containing 10 to 50 percent volcanic ash.

CHECK OUTMan Creates Gardens For Unwanted Bees, Grows Free Food in 30 Abandoned Lots

They then went into the lab, where they manufactured small samples of concrete with various percentages of volcanic ash, as well as samples made only of Portland cement. Chin and her colleagues subjected each sample to standard tests of strength, such as compressing the structures until they began to crack. Then they mapped out each sample’s strength against its calculated embodied energy.

According to their results, replacing 50 percent of traditional cement with volcanic ash with an average particle size of 17 micrometers can bring down concrete’s embodied energy by 16 percent. However, at this particle size, volcanic ash can compromise concrete’s overall strength. Grinding the ash down to a particle size of about 6 micrometers significantly increases concrete’s strength, as smaller particles provide more surface area with which water and cement can chemically bind.

The team extrapolated its results to see how structures made partly with volcanic ash would affect concrete’s embodied energy at the scale of entire buildings and neighborhoods.

RELATEDShakira Built 7 Schools in the Poorest Areas of South America

The researchers focused on a neighborhood in Kuwait with 13 residential and 13 commercial buildings, all made with traditional Portland cement, mostly imported from Europe. With the help of their collaborators in Kuwait, they flew a drone over the neighborhood to collect images and measurements. They also consulted local authorities, who provided them with additional information on each building system.

Using all this information, the team calculated the neighborhood’s existing embodied energy, and then calculated how that embodied energy would change if buildings were made with concrete composed of various percentages of volcanic ash, which is in ample supply in the Middle East.

As with their experiments in the lab, they found that a neighborhood’s infrastructure can be made with considerably less energy if the same buildings are built with concrete made from a cement mixture that is 30 percent volcanic ash.

“What we’ve found out is that concrete can be manufactured with natural additives with desired properties, and reduced embodied energy, which can be translated into significant energy savings when you are creating a neighborhood or a city,” Buyukozturk says.

This research was supported in part by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences. The project was conducted as part of the Kuwait-MIT signature project on sustainability of Kuwait’s built environment for which Buyukozturk was the principal investigator.

Another City to Make Public Transportation Free – On Bad Air Pollution Days

The legislators of Brussels have announced that public transportation and bike-sharing systems will be free for use on days when air pollution exceeds quality limitations set by the European Union.

On such smoggy days, city authorities also plan on banning the use of wood stoves and cutting automotive speed limits by one third.

RELATEDWoman’s Ingenious Invention Generates Electricity Using Wind From Trains, Subways

The directive was introduced earlier this week following two days of surpassing the average of 51-70 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter of air. The Belgian city council expects the proposal to go into full effect by the summer.

The city is also trying to meet EU air quality standards by electrifying public buses and creating low carbon emissions zones.

Pascal Smet, Brussels’ mobility minister, told The Guardian: “The idea is not to ban cars from the city, but to find a new balance.”
