Woman is Shocked When Guy She Just Rescued in the Check-Out Line Turns Out to Be Keith Urban

One woman’s kindness at a local convenience store resulted in a private Keith Urban meet-and-greet right there in the aisle, after she unknowingly picked up the singer’s tab.

Retired school teacher Ruth Reed was standing in line at the Wawa when she overheard that the man in front of her was having trouble with his credit card.

Reed was more than happy to rescue her fellow customer by offering him the few dollars needed for the purchase—but she couldn’t stop thinking the man looked incredibly familiar.

Astonishingly, the patron turned out to be country music star Keith Urban who was in Medford, New Jersey for a concert.

Reed told CBS News that he asked what her name was: “And he said, ‘Ruth, I’m Keith,’ and I said, ‘That’s who you look like, Keith Urban! Do people ever tell you that you look like Keith Urban?’”

And he said, “I am Keith Urban.”

It took some convincing for Reed to believe that she had actually just paid for the star’s snacks—she even asked Urban’s bodyguard if it was true. Finally, when she realized he indeed was standing in front of her, the teacher “just fell apart…and he was gracious.”

The superstar was happy to take a picture with Reed, who hopes the story will inspire others to do good deeds for each other.

We May Soon Have Backpacks That Can Generate Clean Water From the Air—Even in Arid Deserts

One of the most vital resources on the planet may soon be readily available in your backpack.

A professor of mechanical engineering is leading a research team to develop a lightweight, battery-powered pack that can harvest water from the air—as many as 10 gallons per hour— even in arid locations.

The nanofiber-based harvester could help address modern water shortages due to climate change, industrial pollution, droughts and groundwater depletion, especially in dry parts of California, Africa and China. This will also aid residents in South America who live atop mountain ranges higher than rain clouds.

“I was visiting China, which has a freshwater scarcity problem,” said Dr. Shing-Chung Wong of the University of Akron. “There’s investment in wastewater treatment, but I thought that effort alone was inadequate.”

RELATEDDad Designs a Floating Drone That Could Prevent Dozens of Potential Drownings

He figured it would be more prudent to develop a water harvester that could take advantage of abundant water particles in the atmosphere.

To miniaturize water generation and improve the efficiency, Wong and his UA students turned to electrospun polymers. Electrospinning uses electrical forces to produce polymer fibers ranging from tens of nanometers up to 1 micrometer — an ideal size to condense and squeeze water droplets out of the air. These nanoscale fiber polymers offer a much larger surface-area-to-volume ratio than that provided by the typical structures and membranes used in water distillers.

By experimenting with different combinations of polymers that were hydrophilic — which attracts water — and hydrophobic — which discharges water, the team concluded that a water harvesting system could indeed be fabricated using nanofiber technology.

MOREStudents Develop One-Passenger Vehicle That Runs On Air

Unlike existing methods, Wong’s harvester could work in arid desert environments because of the membrane’s high surface-area-to-volume ratio. It also would have a minimal energy requirement.

The appearance of the portable water harvester depends on the end-use applications. The envisioned design looks much like a backpack.

“We could confidently say that, with recent advances in lithium-ion batteries, we could eventually develop a smaller, backpack-sized device,” Wong said.

CHECK OUTBook-Sized Solar Panels Could Power a Whole Home in New Breakthrough

What’s more, Wong’s nanofiber design simultaneously grabs water and filters it, thus the water would be free of pollutants and immediately drinkable.

Next, Wong hopes to obtain additional funding to build a prototype of the freshwater harvester. He anticipates that, once his team is able to produce the prototype, it should be inexpensive to manufacture.

England is Banning Puppy and Kitten Mills

The English government has just announced that it will be banning unethical kitten and puppy farms.

With details of the new legislation to be discussed in the fall, the ban will effectively prevent third-party breeders from being able to sell cats and dogs that have not been raised or treated in suitable conditions.

Licensed breeders will only be able to sell litters that they have bred themselves, and they will be limited to the sale of a certain number of litters per year. Breeders selling animals online will have to display their license number along with the pet’s country of origin and residence.

Anyone wanting to adopt a dog or cat will have to contact a rehoming center or a breeder directly, rather than depending on pet stores that may be acquiring their animals from unscrupulous sources.

RELATEDDomestic Violence Shelters Will Soon Be Renovated to Accommodate Pets

“A ban on third-party sales will ensure the nation’s much loved pets get the right start in life,” said environmental secretary Michael Gove, according to The Guardian.

“People who have a complete disregard for pet welfare will no longer be able to profit from this miserable trade,” he added.

UN Makes ‘Historic Commitment’ to Prevent Fishing Net Abandonment – 46% of Ocean Plastic

The United Nations will reportedly be taking a new and “historic” stance against fishing nets being dumped into the ocean.

Animal rights group World Animal Protection announced earlier this month that they had “successfully lobbied” the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to require fishing nets to be tagged so that they can be traced back to their owners by law enforcement.

The organization says that this will hopefully help to deter fishing companies from illegally dumping fishing gear – or “ghost gear” – into the ocean.

If nets are marked with physical tags, chemical or color marking, or satellite buoys, authorities worldwide will be able to identify offenders and prosecute them accordingly for repeat incidents.

RELATEDRemember the Young Man With a Plan to Rid Oceans of Plastic? His Massive Project to Launch This Summer

The organization did not list specific deadlines or details on how the strategy would be implemented legislatively, however they did state that “UN FAO has also been directed by its member countries to roll out a global strategy to tackle ghost gear.”

According to a study from March 2018, ghost gear is responsible for 46% of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch with 640,000 tons being dumped into the ocean every year.

Since 7 out of 10 animal entanglements are a result of abandoned fishing nets, the organization is calling the UN’s pledge a “massive win for sea animals”.

Rainbow Appears Over Aretha Franklin Tribute in Detroit

As a means of honoring the late Aretha Franklin, her home city’s baseball team had a minute of silence – and then something amazing happened.

The Detroit Tigers paid tribute to the Queen of Soul’s passing before their game against the Chicago Cubs earlier this month.

During the homage, the spectators were stunned – and delighted – to see a rainbow appear over the picture of Franklin that was on the scoreboard.

A photo of the dazzling incident was posted to the Detroit Tigers Facebook page with the caption reading: “Some pictures say it all.” The picture has since been shared thousands of times.

The baseball team also paid homage to Franklin by playing her songs in between their plays.

Since the soul singer spent most of her life in Detroit, the city was especially saddened by her death last week. Franklin passed away at her Michigan home at the age of 76.

Parents Have Perfect Solution to Daughter Sneakily Ordering $350 Worth of Barbies From Amazon

When a mischievous 6-year-old took advantage of her parent’s Amazon account, they knew exactly what to do with the $350 worth of toys that arrived two days later.

Katelyn Lunt first felt compelled to pull the online heist after she watched her mother order a purple Barbie Dreamtopia Rainbow Cove Fairy Doll from the internet. The toy was a reward for doing extra chores around their house in Pleasant View, Utah.

But when her mother Catherine walked away from the computer, Katelyn spotted all of the Barbie related products and add-ons that were just a few clicks away. A few minutes later, $350 worth of toys were being prepared for delivery.

The next day, Catherine checked on the Dreamhouse’s order status only to find three pages worth of order deliveries. She was only able to cancel two of the orders – the rest were already on their way. When Catherine confronted her daughter, she says that Katelyn gave her the look that meant she “knew she was in trouble.”

RELATED10-Year-old Rescues Newborn Using Skills She Learned From Watching Youtube Videos

The day after that, the Lunts were having a family get-together with their relatives. As their cousins, aunts and uncles were arriving at their house, a deliveryman pulled up to the driveway and started unloading box after box.

When they were all bewildered by the heap of boxes, Catherine explained the nature of Katelyn’s heist, and they all laughed over the youngster’s stunt. Her cousin, John Diyalou, took a photo of Katelyn with her prizes and posted it to Twitter where it immediately went viral.

“We started hearing from complete strangers who asked, ‘Aren’t you mad? I’d be livid,’” Catherine told The Washington Post. “Although Katelyn knew what she was doing, she had no comprehension about what she’d spent. I mean, come on. She just started the first grade. I’d have to say this is really my fault, for not paying close attention.”

Then, Katelyn’s dad had an idea – why not turn his daughter’s bad deed into a lesson in kindness?

MOREWatch 2-Year-old ‘Burrito Girl’ Bring Handmade Breakfasts to Exhausted California Firefighters

So instead of returning the orders like they had originally intended, the parents told their daughter to bring the toys to the Primary Children’s Hospital as a thank you for saving Katelyn’s life as an infant.

Just after she was born, Katelyn suffered a seizure and a stroke that caused her to lose 5% of her brain mass. After days of anxiously waiting for results, Katelyn was put on medication and her doctor’s told her she would regenerate the brain mass and be fine.

“Katelyn was a little depressed at first that we were giving them all away,” her father told The Post. “But then she sat with a bunch of little girls who are patients, and they opened all of the boxes together and laughed and played. She had a lot of fun but also learned a really good lesson.”

At the end of the day, Katelyn was happy that her toys could help other kids – and she now knows not to touch her mother’s Amazon account ever again.

Back to School Tips for Gals on the Go: How to Take Care of Yourself and Stay Productive

The Lesson: Back to school season is upon us, and it can be very overwhelming after a long summer of switching off – luckily, these two experienced young women have some wisdom for female college students. Together, they talk listeners through their best advice for striking a good work-life balance right on time for the start of the school year, as well as some tips for students regarding studying, note-taking methods, and easy ways to get out in front of it this September.

Notable Excerpt: “As I get older, I notice it more and more […] I love to sleep but I’ve been going to bed earlier too so it goes hand in hand. Freshman year, I had the worst sleep schedule, I would go to bed at 2 am and wake up at 10… when you wake up at 10 o’clock or later you just don’t have a day. The morning hours are so important and I’m not saying to wake up at 5, that’s unnecessary. […] I just recommend getting up maybe an hour or a little bit before, for example today […] when you have a 9:30 class, instead of pushing it and being like ‘I could probably sleep until 8:45’ – don’t do that. Wake up at 8 give yourself that extra time. Make your coffee, and get ready at a leisurely pace so you’re not stressed.”

China, World’s Biggest Polluter, Hits Carbon Goals 12 Years Early, Sparks Optimism

This exciting new study shows that the world’s shift towards renewable energy may be moving much quicker than we originally anticipated.

As part of the Paris Agreement, China pledged to peak its CO2 emissions by 2030 – now, the country may already have fulfilled this commitment 12 years early, with emissions peaking in 2013 at a level of 9.5 gigatons of CO2, and declining each year since.

After nearly two decades of rapidly rising emissions, the study, published in Nature Geoscience, shows that slowing economic growth in China has made it easier to reduce emissions. The decline of 4.2% in the years since to 2016 is largely associated with changes in industrial structure and a decline in the share of coal used for energy. Decreasing energy intensity (energy per unit GDP) and emissions intensity (emissions per unit energy) also contributed to the decline.

The study authors say the peak prompts important questions about what factors are driving the current decrease, their relative importance, and whether or not the decline can be sustained or even accelerated. In particular, if China’s emissions are have fallen primarily as a result of slowing economic activity, as happened in the US during the global financial crisis, renewed economic growth could reverse the decrease.

RELATEDWorld’s Second Largest Coral Reef Has Just Been Removed From Endangered List

The research team from University of East Anglia, the University of Cambridge, together with researchers in China and the US, explored this by assessing the drivers of Chinese CO2 emissions from 2007-2016, using the latest available energy, economic, and industry data.

They warn that China’s emissions may fluctuate in the coming years and that may mean that 2013 may not be the ‘final’ peak. Indeed, preliminary figures for 2017 have shown an increase. However, the changes in industrial activities, coal use, and efficiency that have caused the recent decline have roots in the changing structure of China’s economy and long-term government policies.

MOREPeople Have Passively Planted Over 30 Million Trees Simply by Surfing the Web

“As the world’s top emitting and manufacturing nation, this reversal is cause for cautious optimism among those seeking to stabilize the Earth’s climate,” said Dabo Guan, professor of climate change economics.

“We conclude that the decline of Chinese emissions is structural and is likely to be sustained if the growing industrial and energy system transitions continue. Government policies are also a sign that the decline in China’s emissions will carry on.

“In response to the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, China has increasingly assumed a leadership role in climate change mitigation, and its five-year progress reports under the agreement will be heavily scrutinized by the rest of the world.”

CHECK OUT: Remember the Young Man With a Plan to Rid Oceans of Plastic? His Massive Project to Launch This Summer

Under current plans, China’s seven local and regional pilot carbon market schemes will be replaced by a nationwide emissions trading scheme in 2018. China has also pledged to improve national energy intensity during 2015 to 2020, which will further translate into emissions reduction in coming years.

A recent Chinese policy directive to cap coal at four billion metric tonnes per year requires its proportion in the energy mix to decrease from 64% in 2015 to around 58% by 2020. Such pressures suggest that the downward trend in emissions could continue as China’s economy shifts from heavy and low-value manufacturing to high-technology and service industries.

Dr. Jing Meng, one of the study’s lead researchers said: “Both emissions and their underlying drivers will need to be carefully monitored, but the fact that China’s emissions have decreased for several years – and more importantly the reasons why – give hope for further decreases going forward.”

Man Comes Up With Ingenious Way to Keep Dementia Patients Hydrated After His Grandma’s Close Call

This young scientist has come up with an ingenious way of keeping dementia patients hydrated – despite their disability.

24-year-old Lewis Hornby first became concerned over the issue of hydration when his grandmother with dementia was unexpectedly rushed to the hospital because she was unknowingly suffering from severe dehydration. So as a means of helping his grandma, Hornby got to work developing a solution: Jelly Drops.

Jelly Drops are small hydrating treats that are made to look like candy for dementia patients. The goodies are made up of 90% water, gelling agents, and electrolytes.

Patients suffering from dementia often have an easier time eating than they do drinking. They are also much more likely to eat something if they believe it to be candy.

RELATEDWhen Grandma With Alzheimer’s Can’t Do Her Puzzles, Teen Comes Up With Perfect Solution

“The box itself contains many features to help people with dementia interact with it, and crucially it doesn’t look like a medical device,” says Hornby. “It’s friendly aesthetic reduces stigma around the solution, increasing its uptake.

“When first offered, grandma ate 7 Jelly Drops in 10 minutes – the equivalent to a cup full of water, something that would usually take hours and require much more assistance. Eating the whole box would account for around half the necessary daily fluid intake.”

Hornby has been recognized by several engineering awards and medical associations for his innovative health solution. Now, Jelly Drops are being tested in UK nursing homes with hopes for expanding distribution in the future.

Watch a Family of Divers Rescue a Whale Shark With Rope Wrapped Around Its Body

A Hawaiian family came to the rescue of an endangered whale shark earlier this month when they discovered a 150-pound rope wrapped around its body.

Marine biologists Kapua Kawelo and Joby Rohrer were swimming with their teenage children off the coast on Lanai, Hawaii when they were awestruck by the rare appearance of the 20-foot shark.

When they saw the tangled fishing net on its neck, however, they were determined to help.

With a small diving knife in hand, Rohrer made five different dives down to depths of 50 to 60 feet so he could slowly and methodically cut the rope free. Though his family members wanted to help, he was the only one who was able to hold his breath for extended periods of time.

RELATEDMinutes After Saying ‘I Do’, Hero Groom Jumps Into the Ocean to Save Drowning Teen

The whale shark seemed to acknowledge the human’s rescue efforts, as it calmly remained in place throughout the 45-minute process.

Finally, Roher managed to cut the rope free and his 15-year-old daughter towed it back to shore so it wouldn’t harm any more sea life.

Brad Norman, who is a National Geographic explorer, states that whale sharks typically swim away when they’re touched, and the fact that it lingered so peacefully was “amazing to see.”

America’s Largest Grocery Store Chain is Saying Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic Bags

Kroger, America’s largest supermarket chain, has just announced that it will be phasing out all of its single-use plastic bags in favor of reusable alternatives by 2025.

Kroger operates 2,800 stores across the country, as well as their additional subsidiary stores including Harris Teeter, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, and Ralphs.

Their QFC stores in the Pacific Northwest will be the first to eliminate single-use bags by their 2019 deadline, as they are already working around Seattle’s municipal plastic bag ban.

According to an op-ed that was published by Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen, the company issues roughly 6 billion of the 100 billion plastic bags that are used in the USA every year, which is enough to “fill three Houston Astrodomes from top to bottom, year-after-year, with nothing but plastic bags.”

RELATEDWorld’s Second Largest Fast Food Chain Begins Phase-Out of Plastic Straws

“When our company’s phase out of single-use grocery bags is fully implemented, the waste generated by these bags at our family of stores will drop by 123 million pounds per year,” said McMullen. “To give a sense of just how big a number that is, that’s equal to the weight of the entire population of Detroit.”

“The plastic shopping bag’s days are numbered,” he added. “Our customers have told us it makes no sense to have so much plastic only to be used once before being discarded – and they’re exactly right.”

How to Build Rapport With Everyone by Learning the 3 Types of Body Language

The Lesson: Did you know that there are three types of processing styles in the world? 75 percent of people are classified as “lookers”; 20 percent are “ listeners”; and 5 percent are “touchers”. In addition to discussing the basic characteristics of each group, body language expert Lynne Franklin also explains and categorizes the less obvious behavioral tendencies. From having thin lips to pen clicking and holding stress in one’s shoulders, many seemingly meaningless tendencies can be very telling of the inner workings of a person’s mind. Franklin teaches the audience how to use this information to tailor their own language and behavior when speaking to each specific type, and she shares the useful secrets of navigating these social interactions with ease, so that misunderstandings can be avoided and an easy rapport can emerge from every new connection.

Notable Excerpt: “People’s brains process information in three different ways and their body language will tell you all day long what their primary style is. You just need to know what to look for and what to do when you see it – and it’s not like … ‘she’s leaning back, her arms are crossed, and she’s frowning so she must be unhappy’. It’s actually understanding how their brains work and then presenting your information in a way that people can see it, hear it, and feel it. It’ll increase the chances that they’ll say yes to whatever you’re proposing.”

The Speaker: After being forced to talk someone out of their decision to attack her with a machete, persuasion became a topic of great importance to Lynne Franklin. In addition to working in consulting and marketing, she delved into the study of neuroscience and people-skills, working with various organizations to apply her newfound knowledge to the business world. An expert in communication, she is also a President-elect of the Illinois chapter of the National Speakers Association.

Books: Lynne Franklin is the author of “Getting Others to Do What You Want”, a book that is a culmination of her vast knowledge of the brain and the way people work.

Police Officer Insists on Breastfeeding Hungry, ‘Dirty’ Baby, Gets Promoted

Officer Celeste Jaqueline Ayala-Facebook

This Argentinian police officer is being praised for her maternal kindness after she was seen breastfeeding a hungry crying baby at a hospital.

Officer Celeste Jaqueline Ayala was working as a guard at the Sor Maria Ludovica children’s hospital in Buenos Aires when she heard an infant crying.

When she ran to find the source of the wailing, she found that the cries were coming from a baby boy who had been taken into custody by police.

Since the hospital staff already had their hands full with other patients, Ayala asked if she could hold and feed the baby.

RELATEDPolice Officer Vaults Over 30-Foot Overpass in Order to Save Suicidal Boy

Despite the boy being described by the employees as “dirty and smelly”, the officer insisted on helping the infant anyway.

“I noticed that he was hungry, as he was putting his hand into his mouth, so I asked to hug him and breastfeed him,” Ayala told Cronica of her deed. “It was a sad moment, it broke my soul seeing him like this.”

As she lovingly cradled the baby, an onlooker named Marcos Heredia snapped a photo of the powerful moment and posted it to social media where it has since been shared thousands of times. The officer didn’t mind the exposure at all, and in the end it benefitted her, too.

“I want to make public this great gesture of love that you had today with that baby,” wrote Heredia. “You did not care about the dirt and the smell as the professional gentlemen of the hospital said. Things like that are not seen every day.”

The security department for which Ayala works made a Twitter post earlier this week saying that – in light of her kindness and integrity – they promoted her from officer to sergeant, saying that she was the kind of “police we’re proud of” and “the police we want.”

No More Cages: New Animal Cracker Packaging Sets Mascots Free to Represent the Changing Times

One of the world’s most beloved animal-shaped snacks has received a much-needed makeover to reflect our changing times.

Instead of depicting lions and tigers and bears behind bars, new packaging for the iconic animal cracker brand now depicts the animals roaming free in the wild.

According to Modelez International, the parent company of Barnum’s Animals, the new box will be one more step to encouraging the cultural shift towards animal rights awareness.

“To continue to make the brand relevant for years to come, we felt this was the right time for the next evolution in our design, now showing the animals in a natural habitat,” said a spokesperson from Mondelez.

RELATEDRats Are Saving Elephants From Hidden Landmines on Their Migration Routes

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are rejoicing in the change after they had reportedly been in discussions with Barnum’s Animals about changing the 116-year-old design.

“Big victories can come in small packages, and no matter where we look, we find new evidence that people are embracing compassion for animals like never before,” the organization said in a statement.

“The new box for Barnum’s Animals perfectly reflects that our society no longer tolerates caging and chaining exotic animals for circus shows,” they added.
