Founder of Tom’s Shoes Reveals Lessons Learned From Early Business Failure and How to Win

The Lesson: In this podcast, bestselling author, innovator, and business junkie Blake Mycoskie – who is estimated to be worth over $300 million –  gives his thoughts and advice on relinquishing control over a situation, balancing business with personal relationships, how our childhoods affect our current behavior, and how to deal with failure.

Notable Excerpt: “I’ve made and lost several times, so … I made some money on that business, I lost money on the next business, then I made some money on the next business. Woman’s Ingenious Invention Generates Electricity Using Wind From Trains, Subways

File photo by Phil Richards, CC

A 27-year-old designer has created an ingenious new way of generating wind power in London – and it is done using the infrastructure that already exists.

Charlotte Slingsby is the mastermind behind Moya Power: a startup that uses cloth-like material to generate electricity from the wind that comes off of subways and trains.

As the cars speed through the stations, the textiles’ motion caused by the resulting gusts of wind accumulates electricity.

RELATEDBecause His AirBnb Guest Had a Heart Attack, Man’s Ingenuity is Now Saving Thousands of Lives

While the electric yield of the sheeting material is relatively low compared to that of turbines and wind farms, the textiles can blend into urban environments and utilize space more efficiently.

Slingsby, who studied design and engineering at Imperial College and the Royal College of Art, has already installed a pilot set of Moya Power textiles along the London Crossway routes, according to WIRED.

“If we all live in cities that need electricity, we need to look for new, creative ways to generate it,” says Slingsby. “I wanted to create something that works in different situations and that can be flexibly adapted, whether you live in an urban hut or a high-rise.”

Want Instant Pain Relief? New Report Says You Could Go For a Swim in Cold Water

This new report says that short, sharp, cold water swim may offer an alternative to strong painkillers and physiotherapy to relieve severe persistent pain after surgery.

The doctors in the journal BMJ Case Reports came to their conclusions after carrying out a surgical procedure (endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy) on a 28-year-old man to curb his excessive facial flushing.

The surgery entailed cutting the triggering nerves inside his chest. The procedure itself was successful, but 10 weeks later, the usual postoperative prescription of strong painkillers and staged physiotherapy had barely made a dent in the severity of his pain.

The man explained that exercise and movement just made the pain worse, preventing him from completing his rehabilitation and recovery. Furthermore, the constant pain caused him a great deal of distress and wrecked his quality of life.

RELATEDDutchman Proves He Can Teach Anyone to Control Health With the Power of Ice

Before his surgery, the young man had been a keen triathlete, and so had swum competitively in open water. He thought that a cold water swim would, at the very least, provide some welcome distraction from the searing pain.

He returned to the same coastal spot where the triathlon took place. The only way to enter the water there is to plunge in from a rocky outcrop, he explained. Competitors are forced to swim for around 60 seconds before being able to clamber safely back ashore.

To his surprise, the young man felt no pain while he was in the water, nor has he felt any since, the authors report. His preoperative quality of life has been fully restored and he has resumed his usual sporting activities without further recourse to any painkillers.

MORE:  Watching Birds Near Your Home is Good For Your Mental Health

This is only one case report, and, caution the authors: “Due to the nature of retrospective case reports, it is unclear, without further evidence, whether the exposure to forced cold water swimming is causally and specifically related to pain remission.”

But given the timeframe and the absence of any alternative explanations other than pure chance, it seems as if the cold water plunge might have afforded some instant pain relief–at least in this case, they venture.

How this might have happened isn’t clear, they admit. But there are some possible biological explanations.

CHECK OUT: Simple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

The shock of the sudden cold water immersion might have induced a wave of sympathetic nervous system activity: the body’s response to this has been linked to an altered state of consciousness. This in turn might have altered pain perception, offering instant relief.

As to why the man’s pain disappeared completely over the long term, the authors suggest that his reduced mobility might have helped maintain the pain; the pain relief he felt in the water would have enabled him to move freely, so breaking that cycle.

Nerve pain can be very difficult to treat and is associated with structural changes in the brain and a legacy of psychological problems if it doesn’t respond to conventional treatment, the authors point out.

MOREHow Mindfulness Shattered My Pain Perception

A cold water plunge might succeed where painkillers fail, they suggest, but only if backed up by more substantive evidence.

“Further prospective [exploratory] investigation is needed to assess the replicability and feasibility of forced cold water swimming as a potentially effective, natural intervention to enhance recovery outcomes from common postoperative complications,” they write.

‘Butt Lady Of Auburn’ Picks Up 1 Million Cigarette Butts

While some people may have been spending their Valentine’s Day eating chocolate, the “Butt Lady of Auburn” spent the holiday picking up cigarette butts.

This is not the first time that she has picked up local litter, either – over the course of the last three and a half years, Sally Dawley has been working to make Auburn, California a little cleaner by picking up cigarette butts.

On Wednesday, she passed a major personal milestone by picking up her millionth butt in a diner parking lot.

“I got tired of going on my walks and seeing cigarette butts everywhere,” she told FOX40.

RELATEDDutch Man Cleans Up Entire River Bank On His Daily Commute to Work

Despite reaching such an impressive goal, Dawley doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. She hopes that people will see her story and become inspired to start throwing away their butts – or better yet, to stop smoking altogether.

In fact, people in surrounding cities have already reached out to the Butt Lady for help in orchestrating their own clean-up initiatives.

‘Sad’ Dog Looking For Kids to Read to Him is Now All Booked Up

Sting the dog loves helping children with their reading skills. So when no one showed up to his library session earlier this month, his owner posted some lonesome looking photos of the canine to Facebook to encourage participation.

But when the internet got a load of the pup’s sad mug, thousands of people from across the country started clamoring to cheer him up.

If you also feel yourself getting worked up over the injustice, have no fear – Sting’s owner, John Muellner, has been quick to reassure media sources that Sting is by no means a sad dog… his face just looks like that.

The 10-year-old hound is a retired race dog who now works as a certified therapy dog in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Once a week at the city library, Sting lets kids read to him for the Paws to Read program – an initiative that lets kids practice their reading skills by reading to complacent pups. He usually spends an hour at the library so at least three kids can get 20 minutes of reading time; but this week, no one showed up.

“Unfortunately, nobody signed up to read to Sting at the White Bear Lake library tonight,” wrote Muellner. “If you know of a 4 to 8 yr old who would like to read to a dog, please contact the White Bear Lake library by phone or their website about the Paws to Read program.”

Much to the surprise of Muellner and the library, the phones started ringing off the hook.

“People are asking if we could hold the phone to Sting’s ear so they could read to him,” librarian Ann Wahlstrom told TODAY. “The whole staff of a Petco in California called to say they love Sting. It’s just amazing, the outpouring.”

Much to the delight of the librarians, Sting’s schedule is now booked solidly until April, as is the other resident reading dogs of Paws to Read.

“We love promoting the joy of reading; the joy of reading to dogs,” she added.

How to Make Stress Your Friend

The Lesson: Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case

Notable Excerpt: “Your heart might be pounding, you might be breathing faster, perhaps breaking out into a sweat – and normally, we interpret these physical changes as anxiety or signs that we aren’t coping very well with the pressure, but what if you viewed them instead as signs that your body was energized and preparing for you to meet these challenges?”

Basketball Team Has Only 1 Cheerleader So Opposing Squad Learns Her Routine and Joins Her

There may have been a basketball tournament going on in Carroll County, Missouri earlier this week, but the actions of a group of cheerleaders stole the show.

The footage in the video from the CLAA conference’s basketball tournament was sent to WDAF Kansas City by a mom named Brenda Milligan, whose daughter is a cheerleader for Hardin-Central High School.

Milligan’s daughter was part of a group of cheerleaders who noticed that the opposing team, Northwestern, only had a single cheerleader on their side.

“She was embarrassed and scared, just like any of us would be if we had to cheer in front of a big crowd all alone,” Brenda told WDAF.

But the cheerleader wouldn’t be alone for much longer.

“My daughter and her squad took the nerve and went out to cheer with her,” Brenda said. “They learned her cheers and were able to present them to the crowd in a short amount of time. Many people were there supporting the girls in this great achievement.”

The lone cheerleader from Northwestern, Tori Adams, said that she had been performing alone because many of her teammates were sick. The game had also been rescheduled, which conflicted with other members’ prior commitments.

Nonetheless, she was thankful the opposing squad joined her.

“They learned some of my cheers and I learned some of their cheers,” Tori said. “It was a big relief.”

Women Encircle a Crying Mom Whose Toddler Was Having a Meltdown at the Airport

While airports might typically act as a spark plug for stress, they can also be places where strangers assist during the worst moments of travel anxiety.

One such incident happened to Beth Bornstein Dunnington when she was flying out of Los Angeles earlier this month.

The mom from Waimea, Hawaii was at LAX waiting to board her flight to Portland. As she was in the departure area alongside a crowd of other travelers waiting for their own flights, she saw a mother who was having some problems with her son.

Dunnington wrote on Facebook: “A toddler who looked to be eighteen or so months old was having a total meltdown, running between the seats, kicking and screaming, then lying on the ground, refusing to board the plane.”

“His young mom, who was clearly pregnant and traveling alone with her son, became completely overwhelmed… she couldn’t pick him up because he was so upset, he kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and screaming again.”

“The mother finally sat down on the floor and put her head in her hands, with her kid next to her still having a meltdown, and started crying.”

Dunnington was then heartened by what happened next.

Six or seven women from around the boarding area convened on the young mother, formed a little circle around her and her toddler, and each woman did something to help calm down the distressed duo.

“I sang ‘The Itsy Bitsy Spider’ to the little boy… one woman had an orange that she peeled; one woman had a little toy in her bag that she let the toddler play with; another woman gave the mom a bottle of water.

“Someone else helped the mom get the kid’s sippy cup out of her bag and give it to him.”

Though the women did not exchange words over their common goal, they were able to calm down the mother and her toddler until they were successfully able to get on the plane.

“After they went through the door we all went back to our separate seats and didn’t talk about it… we were strangers, gathering to solve something.

“It occurred to me that a circle of women, with a mission, can save the world. I will never forget that moment,” she added.

Actor Luke Wilson Saves Woman in Car Crash By Crawling in Through the Trunk

Luke Wilson, the actor known for such movie roles as The Royal Tenenbaums and 3:10 to Yuma, is being hailed as a hero for his quick response to a car crash earlier this week.

The actor was driving his Toyota SUV through Los Angeles on Tuesday evening when a Ferrari clipped his car and crashed into a woman’s BMW.

According to a witness who spoke with the Press Association, Wilson immediately leapt into action. Once the BMW started smoking, the actor crawled in through the trunk of the car, pulled the 50-year-old female driver out of the wreckage, and carried her to safety on the side of the road. She was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

“I would say [Luke] was heroic in leading the charge on how to get her out,” witness Sean Heirigs told the Press Association. “He didn’t have to do that, he was also one of the injured parties so for him to be there helping me was amazing.”

The other victim of the crash, pro golfer Bill Haas, was a passenger in the Ferrari that caused the incident. Sources say that while Haas did not sustain serious injury, he did withdraw from the golf tournament in which he was scheduled to compete.

Strangers Get New Hearts on the Same Day, Fall in Love After Families Met in Waiting Room

Taylor Givens and Collin Kobelja are a match made in heaven. Soon, they will be tying the knot – and it is all thanks to their faulty hearts.

Because he had been born with an abnormal heart, 22-year-old Kobelja found himself at the INOVO Fairfax Hospital of Virginia back in 2011 awaiting his second heart transplant. Hovering on the brink of death while machines were pumping his blood, Kobelja’s odds did not look good.

Despite the average 4-month waiting time for a heart transplant, however, a donor came through and Kobelja was given a new heart just in the nick of time.

Meanwhile in a hospital room a few doors down from Kobelja, 17-year-old Givens was also awaiting a heart transplant. The teenager, who had been diagnosed with an enlarged heart, was hooked up to the same medical apparatus, desperately hoping for the unexpected to happen.

As fate would have it, it did.

Just before Givens’s heart was due to give out, a donor came through and the teenager underwent a successful transplant on the very same day as Kobelja.

Though the two transplant patients never met, their families would often chat with each other while they were visiting their respective offspring. Upon hearing that there was a fellow young transplant patient staying down the hall, Givens wanted to meet with him and talk about the experience. Kobelja, on the other hand, was too emotionally drained from the stress to feel much like making friends.

But thanks to the friendship that was struck up between their parents, Givens and Kobelja connected on social media.

RELATEDA Spontaneous Matchmaker Nurse Has Incredible Track Record For Helping Folks Find Love

Once the they had recovered, Kobelja moved to California and Givens lived in Virginia. They staid in touch, but still did not get the chance to meet until 2016. Givens was recovering from having her tonsils removed at the INOVO hospital while Kobelja was visiting the facilities to chat with his old transplant team. Givens asked the young man to stop by her room and say hi.

The two hit it off immediately.

“Collin left the room and my mom was like, ‘He was flirting with you,’” Givens told TODAY. “We have been emotionally inseparable since.”

LOOKSenior Learns How to Do Wife’s Makeup Before She Goes Blind

Despite having to overcome several obstacles – such as briefly dating long-distance and Givens undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma that was caused by her transplant – she and Kobelja are planning on getting married soon.

And Givens says that it is all thanks to their array of health issues.

“All of the things that fell into place for us to be together are wild. Everything has happened exactly as it needed to happen,” said the 24-year-old.

Kobelja, now 30 years old, says: “We have been very lucky together. It all lined up.”

Single Dad Walked 11 Miles to Work Every Day—Until His Co-Workers Found Out

For the last 7 months, Trenton Lewis had been diligently waking up in the pre-dawn morning so he could make the 5.5-mile hike to work in time for his 4AM shift. Then, after a long day’s work, he would walk the same distance all the way back home again.

Despite the 21-year-old father never telling any of his co-workers at the UPS facility in Little Rock, Arkansas, the workforce eventually found out about his exhausting commute.

But instead of allowing the dedicated dad to continue hiking to and from work every day, they all pitched in enough money to buy him a new car.

According to WTVR, Lewis’s coworker Kenneth Bryant said: “Everybody who I talked to said yes! The hardest part was reminding them to bring cash.

“I told the seller what I was doing and who it was for and he said he was willing to work with me on a price,” he added.

Bryant was eventually able to buy a 2006 Saturn Ion for a mere $2,000. The workforce then lured Lewis to the parking lot for a brief “union meeting” last week.

When Lewis joined all of his co-workers in the lot, however, they handed him the keys to the Saturn.

Though Lewis is reportedly described as “stoic”, he could not contain his emotions over the gift.

Furthermore, Lewis says that the first thing he did in his new car was pick up his 14-month-old daughter so they could get a bite to eat.

Why Germany is Making it Free to Ride Buses and Trains in 5 Cities

subway platform reading-moriza-Flickr-CC

In a bid to banish air pollution generated by automobiles, German ministers have announced that they will be testing free public transport in five different cities.

In a letter written to the Environmental Commissioner of the EU, German legislators wrote: “We are considering public transport free of charge in order to reduce the number of private cars.”

“Effectively fighting air pollution without any further unnecessary delays is of the highest priority for Germany,” they added, according to AFP.

The initiative will be launching by the end of the year “at the latest” in cities such as Bonn, Essen, and Mannheim. Should the scheme prove successful, Germany will expand the initiative and start refining public infrastructure to support the increased transit capacity.

LOOKTrees Growing Out of Buildings Could Help Heal China’s Air Pollution Problem

In addition to the free public transport, German legislators are planning on tightening emission restrictions for cabs and buses; implementing more tax breaks for low-emission vehicles; and encouraging carpool schemes.

All of these tactics will hopefully help the nation achieve the environmental goals set by the Paris Agreement.

Why You Should Define Your Fears Instead of Your Goals

The Lesson: Tim Ferriss has suffered from frequent bouts of deep depression over the course of his life – but now, he has a recipe for avoiding self-paralysis and emotional free fall (and it’s the same tool that helps him make his best business decisions, too… it’s stoicism.)

Notable Excerpt: “Think of stoicism as an operating system for thriving in high stress environments, for making better decisions … I created an exercise called ‘fear-setting’, like goal-setting. And I can trace all of my biggest wins and all of my biggest disasters averted to doing fear-setting … You’ll find some of your fears are very well founded, but you shouldn’t conclude that without putting them under a microscope. What we most fear doing, asking, saying—these are very often exactly what we most need to do.”

The Speaker: Over the course of his career, Ferriss has become a one-time national Chinese kickboxing champion, a lecturer at Princeton University, a professional breakdancer on MTV, a horseback archer, and a multimillionaire author, motivational speaker, and investor. Neighbors Reunite Couple With Engagement Ring Accidentally Flushed Down the Toilet

It may have taken 48 hours of frantically searching through mud and sewage water, but it finally paid off: an anxious couple was reunited with the engagement ring that they had flushed down the toilet.

Haleigh Morrissey had been applying sun tan lotion to her skin last Saturday when she became worried about accidentally staining the diamond ring with the beauty product. She then called her fiancé Dean Booras into the bathroom so he could remove the ring from her finger.

Booras took the ring off her finger and wrapped it in toilet paper so he could wipe off the lotion.

A while later, Morrissey returned to the bathroom and saw the wad of toilet paper sitting on the counter. Thinking that it was just a piece of trash, she grabbed the tissue and casually threw it into the toilet.

She then realized what she had done.

Desperate to retrieve the precious piece of jewelry before it reached the sewage main and became lost forever, Booras and Morrissey recruited the help of their neighbor Ken Gunari and his sons.

The group started out the expedition by shoving a camera into one of the pipes to see if they could see the ring. Though they did not see see the jewelry, the video showed that there was a group of plant roots that had grown into the pipes. The Gunaris reasoned that if the ring had gotten lodged in the plumbing, it had most likely gotten stuck on the roots.

The crew then cut a hole in the pipe and inserted a mesh filter with the hopes that it would trap the ring before it got washed away.

Finally, Luke Gunari saw the ring trapped in the filter, pulled it out of the water, and presented it to Booras and Morrissey.

“I’m … looking down at it and I see some shiny thing in there,” said Luke, according to KTVU. “They didn’t know I had it in my hand… just walked up slowly with my hand open… and they look down at it and they just started screaming.”
