Roommate’s Prank is Called the Funniest Tweet of All Time

People were calling it the best Twitter post of all time.

@Deno_Tron, who describes himself a stand-up comedian earned a quarter million Likes for his hilarious tweet after he pranked his roommate.

The Italian from Brooklyn wrote that he had been asked by his roomie to clean up a bit before he arrived back home with a date.

We don’t know if Deno had any time to clean up, because he got busy creating a tabletop shrine to Princess Diana, instead. And he placed it in Thom’s bedroom.

Encircling several lit candles, he arranged three framed photographs of Lady Di adorned with hearts—and added a small vase of flowers for that daily-tended look.

He even printed out a sign that read “Thom and Diana, Lovers Seperated by Time and Circumstance”.

From among more than one thousand comments on the post, fans expressed their awe for this guy’s ability to win the day and make us laugh. Almost a third toasted his choice of Comic Sans font.

This quip, though, takes the trophy for best comeback: Andrew Malin (@antiqueboy) replied, Siri, play “Candle in the Wind” …

Because GNN curates a Good Laughs page, we just had to share this. Although it is six months old, such well played and harmless pranks are as timeless as the People’s Princess.

China is Building Another Enormous Floating Solar Farm on Top of Abandoned Coal Mine

An old collapsed coal mine in China is being given new life as the location of the world’s largest floating solar farm.

The solar farm, which is being built in Huainan, takes the record-breaking title from another solar farm within the city that currently generates 40 megawatts. The new one will provide electricity for 94,000 homes, nearly quadrupling capacity to 150-mw.

The $151 million facility is being built atop a lake that sprang up over a collapsed coal mine. Construction began in July and is expected to be finished in May 2018.

This is not the first environmentally sustainable initiative that China has launched to curb their coal use – last month, the Asian giant announced the launch of the world’s largest carbon trading market.

“Putting a price on carbon is the right signal to send in this … blue-sky-deprived world,” said Li Shuo, senior global policy advisor at Greenpeace East Asia. “By doing so, Beijing also positions itself ahead of major industrialized countries, many of whom are still seeing climate action as a burden rather than an opportunity.

Lucky Break: Mother of Two Wins $5M on Ticket She Bought By Mistake

Thanks to a simple mistake, a New Jersey mother has just won a $5 million lottery jackpot.

46-year-old Oksana Zaharov was shopping at a convenience store in Manhattan when she asked to buy a $1 scratch-off ticket form the clerk. Instead, he gave her a $10 Set For Life ticket.

“When the clerk handed me the wrong ticket, I felt bad so I decided to just go ahead and buy it,” Zaharov said in a release from the New York Lottery. “I actually used the ticket as a bookmark for a couple of weeks before I decided to scratch it.”

When she did finally scratch the ticket, she found that she had won the jackpot.

“I never win anything,” she said. “I was sure the ticket was fake.”

Zaharov is now set to receive the winnings in 19 installments of $172,068 after taxes for the next 20 years. Though the Jersey mother said that she would like to treat her two kids to a Caribbean vacation, she plans on saving the money so she can treat the youngsters to a loan-free college education once they grow up.

In Bid to Combat Obesity, a Simple Patch Turns Energy-storing Fats into Energy-burning Fats

A new approach to reducing bulging tummy fats has shown promise in laboratory trials. The solution aims to “use a person’s own body fats to burn more energy, which is a natural process in babies.”

Combining a new way to deliver medicine, via a micro-needle patch, with drugs that are known to turn energy-storing white fat into energy-burning brown fat, this innovative approach developed by scientists from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) reduced weight gain in mice on a high fat diet and their fat mass by more than 30% over four weeks.

The new type of skin patch contains hundreds of micro-needles, each thinner than a human hair, which are loaded with the drug Beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist or another drug called thyroid hormone T3 triiodothyronine.

When the patch is pressed into the skin for about two minutes, these micro-needles become embedded in the skin and detach from the patch, which can then be removed.

RELATEDWoman Can Smell Parkinson’s Disease, May Lead To Breakthrough For Detection

As the needles degrade, the drug molecules then slowly diffuse to the energy-storing white fat underneath the skin layer, turning them into energy-burning brown fats.

Brown fats are found in babies and they help to keep the baby warm by burning energy. As humans grow older, the amount of brown fats lessens and is replaced with visceral white fats.

Published in the journal Small Methods recently by NTU Professor Chen Peng and Assistant Professor Xu Chenjie, this approach could help to address the worldwide obesity problem without resorting to surgical operations or oral medication which could require large dosages and could have serious side effects.

“With the embedded micro-needles in the skin of the mice, the surrounding fats started browning in five days, which helped to increase the energy expenditure of the mice, leading to a reduction in body fat gain,” said Xu, who focuses on research in drug delivery systems.

“The amount of drugs we used in the patch is much less than those used in oral medication or an injected dose. This lowers the drug ingredient costs while our slow-release design minimizes its side effects,” said Xu.

Obesity which results from an excessive accumulation of fat is a major health risk factor for various diseases, including heart disease, stroke and type-2 diabetes. The World Health Organization estimates that 1.9 billion adults in the world are overweight in 2016 with 650 million of them being obese.

“What we aim to develop is a painless patch that everyone could use easily, is unobtrusive and yet affordable,” said Chen, a biotechnology expert who researches obesity.

Under the two scientists’ guidance at NTU’s School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering, research fellow Dr Aung Than conducted experiments which showed that the patch could suppress weight gain in mice that were fed a high fat diet and reduce their fat mass by over 30%, over a period of four weeks.

The treated mice also had significantly lower blood cholesterol and fatty acids levels compared to the untreated mice.

Being able to deliver the drug directly to the site of action is a major reason why it is less likely to have side effects than orally delivered medication.

The team estimates that their prototype patch had a material cost of about S$5 (US$3.50) to make, which contains beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist combined with Hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the human body and commonly used in products like skin moisturizers.

MOREFrom Terrifying to Terrific – Man Redesigns MRI Machine to Delight Children Instead of Scare Them

Beta-3 adrenergic receptor agonist is a drug approved by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration and is used to treat overactive bladders, while T3 triiodothyronine is a thyroid hormone commonly used for medication for an underactive thyroid gland.

Both have been shown in other research studies to be able to turn white fats brown, but their use in reducing weight gain is hampered by potentially serious side-effects and drug accumulation in non-targeted tissues if conventional drug delivery routes were used, such as through oral intake.

NTU’s Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine Associate Professor Melvin Leow, who was not affiliated with this study, said it is exciting to be able to tackle obesity via the browning of white fat, and the results were promising.

“These data should encourage Phase I Clinical studies in humans to translate these basic science findings to the bedside, with the hope that these microneedle patches may be developed into an established cost-effective modality for the prevention or treatment of obesity in the near future,” added Leow, an endocrinologist.

Since the publication of the paper, the team has received keen interest from biotechnology companies and is looking to partner clinician scientists to further their research.

Woman Meets Homeless Family Living in a Broken Bus, So She Comes Back With a House

Olivia, Eric, and their three daughters — an infant, toddler and 5-year-old — were living in a partially converted school bus. The family of five had been moving across the U.S. when they broke down in Greeley, Colorado.

Broke and homeless, Olivia was certain this holiday season would be nonexistent for her kids.

Meanwhile, Virginia Finch and her daughters were preparing Thanksgiving meals for the homeless. They heard about a family living behind the nearby gas station and went to deliver the food to them.

It was Olivia and her brood.

Finch and her daughters listened to their heartbreaking story. The second they got home, they began putting a plan in place for what they could do for the troubled family. With the cold season approaching, the Finch family could not bear to think of the babies suffering in the cold.

“There’s no way I’m going to leave a baby with no crib for a bed on Christmas,” Finch thought to herself.

That’s when she thought of the second house that her family was preparing to sell or rent. She returned to Olivia with a proposition, and at first, the struggling mom of three thought it was some kind of cruel joke: Finch asked the homeless family if they would like to live in the house.

Waiter Fights Back Tears When Repeat Customer Calls Him Outside to Hand Over Keys to a Car

While most of us may appreciate a restaurant worker’s exceptional service, Edward Pollard went out of his way to repay his waiter for his consistent kindness.

Pollard frequently pops into a local eatery for lunch during his work week – and every time he does, he requests a specific server because of the man’s wonderful service.

“This gentleman takes such pride in his work. He is always extremely polite and conversational,” Pollard wrote on Facebook. “The kind of person who instantly can put a smile on your face.”

Pollard also always saw this man on his way home from working a shift; and instead of getting into a car and driving home, Pollard would watch the waiter walk to and from the bus stop.

“I have seen him walking in the blazing summer heat and I have seen him walking in the harsh cold winter,” Pollard explained. “No matter his circumstances, when I see him at work, he is always upbeat and a joy to be around.”

This inspiring outlook on life spurred Pollard to do something kind for his waiter. Instead of just leaving a hefty tip on his meal earlier this week, Pollard surprised the man with a car.

After Pollard made sure that the automobile was parked outside of the restaurant, he told the waiter: “See that car right there? That’s your car!”

Overwhelmed with emotion, the waiter hugged Pollard and began crying over his amazing generosity.

Watch Elephants and Lions Frolicking on Donated Leftover Christmas Trees

As the holidays wind down every year, hundreds of leftover Christmas trees find themselves sitting in vacant lots without homes to decorate – but luckily, there are other ways that old conifers can bring joy to the world.

Instead of letting the trees go to a landfill, dozens of zoos around the world use leftover Christmas trees to enrich the lives of their animal residents.

While elephants don’t usually have the opportunity to eat pine needles – which are deliciously rich in vitamin C – they actually really like the taste; and judging by the footage of these German elephants playing with the greenery in Berlin, the needles make for great backscratchers, too.

Giraffes, deer, otters, and other resident plant eaters reportedly enjoy munching on the trees as well.

Additionally, these lions at the Linton Zoo in England love rolling around on the trees before their afternoon cat nap because they find the smell “exciting”, according to The Local.

If you want to give your own Christmas tree to a good cause, try calling your local zoo and seeing if they are open to donations (just make sure that you take off your tinsel and ornaments first).

When School Places Ad For Male Mentors, They’re Overwhelmed by ‘Volunteer Dad’ Responses

One middle school in Texas was afraid that they wouldn’t have enough father figures for their “Breakfast With Dads” event last month – but after their call to action went viral on social media, they were overwhelmed by the response.

The staff of Dr. Billy Earle Dade Middle School in Dallas originally posted on Facebook asking for at least 50 men to come to the event so they could give some mentorship and support to the young students.

On the day of the event back in December, however, over 600 men from all backgrounds, religions, and races showed up for the breakfast.

The volunteer dads spent the morning doing everything from giving life advice to the students, to teaching them how to tie a double Windsor knot.

“This morning by far exceeded all of my expectations!” said event volunteer Kristina Chaade. “Thank you to every single man that volunteered your time and gave a piece of yourself to these young men this morning! I am forever grateful!”

Nepal’s Last Dancing Bears Have Been Rescued

Rangila and Sridevi were the last two bears in Nepal who were being forced to dance for spectators by traveling street performers. Last month, they were finally rescued from their captors.

Dancing bears are no longer used in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, India, Serbia, Turkey, and now Nepal, thanks to the concerted efforts of animal welfare organizations.

With the help of local law enforcement officers, the World Animal Protection nonprofit and the Jane Goodall Institute Nepal rescued the two animals from their captors on December 19th. Despite growing up in an abusive environment, the bears were in relatively good health.

RELATEDCalifornia Becomes First State to Ban Pet Shop Sales of Non-Rescued Animals

“Being there in person to help rescue the last known dancing bears in Nepal was surreal,” Neil D’Cruze, global wildlife adviser at World Animal Protection, told National Geographic.

Rangila and Sridevi will be kept at a national park until they are ready to be transferred to a wildlife sanctuary for rehabilitation.

Since Nepalese performers have employed dancing bears as a means of income, rescuers temporarily employed two of the bears’ captors to look after the mammals in their new home. Hopefully, this will give them sufficient time to find a new job so they don’t fall back into their old career habits.

If found guilty of keeping bears in the future, however, their punishment will be severe.

Deconstructing Anxiety–it Helps to Know What it is

Title: Deconstructing Anxiety

The Lesson: In order to fight the anxiety overwhelming your brain, you have to know what it is – and while many great minds throughout history have had some differing ideas of what anxiety is, it all comes down to the same thing.

Notable Excerpt: “Anxiety is temporal dislocation. It stems from our inability to be in the present. It stems from our overactive neocortical hardware getting obsessed … with this idea of an impending future that we can’t control.”

No Rise in Autism in Past Three Years, Says Large U.S. Study

After twenty years of steady increases in the number of children being diagnosed on the autism spectrum, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported no such rise over the last three years, according to a nationwide survey.

More than 30,000 parents were asked if a health professional had diagnosed their child or adolescent with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), which includes Asperger’s syndrome. In the annual study, the rate of those reporting such a diagnosis has remained relatively unchanged since 2014, according to a research letter in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Currently, the causes of the ASD neuro-developmental symptoms, which alter communication abilities and social skills, are still unknown.

Check Out Some Good News Stories About Autism

“Previous surveys have reported a steady increase in ASD prevalence in U.S. children over the past two decades,” the letter says. But in recent years, the numbers have hit a “plateau” — between 2014 and 2016, the estimate of children and adolescents with autism was about 2.4 percent, “with no statistically significant increase over the three years.”

The survey information was gathered through the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, which is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

World’s First ‘Mental Health Ambulance’ is Helping Hundreds of People in Sweden

Stockholm is the first city in the world to deploy an ambulance specifically for responding to mental health crises. One year after its launch, its impressive data speaks to its success.

During its first year on the road, the Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PAM) ambulance responded to over 1,000 individuals in need of help. On average, the PAM team responds to 135 calls a month – and they have only received repeated contact from 96 individuals in total. This low number of repeat crises shows the efficacy of having a dedicated team ready to listen to someone in need of counseling.

Out of the 1,036 individuals attended to during the first year, only one fourth went on to longer term inpatient care.

“It used to be the police who handled these kinds of calls. But just the presence of the police can easily cause a patient to feel like they’ve done something wrong. Mental illness is nothing criminal, so it doesn’t make sense,” PAM paramedic Anki Björnsdotter told VICE.

Though the city of Stockholm is quite large, the PAM is willing to go wherever it is needed across the region. Before any action is taken, Björnsdotter and the team take the time to understand the situation.

“We talk to the person in order to make a call about whether we should bring the patient to the hospital, or give them a ride home,” she says. Once the team ascertains the situation, they can offer help on the spot or bring them in for an evaluation and longer care.

MORE‘Thanks for saving my life’: Man Marries Woman Who Prevented His Suicide 10 Years Ago

The interior of the special ambulance reveals the obvious difference between a normal emergency response vehicle and the PAM. Where a typical ambulance would have its interior taken up by stretchers and medical equipment, the PAM is instead outfitted with comfortable chairs and a small desk to create a relaxed environment conducive to discussion and therapy.

When asked about her opinion on the future of PAM, Björnsdotter responded “I believe we will look back and think, ‘Why didn’t we do this sooner?’ I really hope similar services will be available to cover Sweden’s major cities, at least.”

Luckily, due to the success in Stockholm, additional regions such as Skåne, Örebro, Blekinge, and Jönköping are planning to create their own PAMs.

When Kitten is Frozen to Boat Dock For 11 Hours, Sheriff Knows Exactly What to Do

An adorable fluffy kitten has just been rescued from the Kentucky cold thanks to a local police sheriff who knew exactly what to do.

The cat had been frozen to a boat dock in Mercer County, Kentucky for eleven hours after it had accidentally tumbled into the water, climbed out onto the shore, and icy temperatures caused its paws and fur to stick to a rock.

Roy and Laurie Jasper, an older couple who lives near the marina, saw the kitten’s predicament and called for help.

Mercer County Sheriff Ernie Kelty arrived on the scene and proceeded to pour warm water onto the kitten’s paws.

Once its feet were free, the sheriff then cut off the kitten’s fur that was still stuck to the rock.

Kelty kept the kitten warm under his shirt until he could pass it off to the Jaspers.

The couple has since adopted the stray kitten and named it Ernie in honor of his clever rescuer.

Powerful Hollywood Women Strike Back, Raise $15 Million For Anti-Harassment Action Plan

In the wake of the sexual allegations that have begun to plague Hollywood stars, over 300 powerful women in theatre, film, and television have joined forces to put a stop to gender-based harassment in the workplace.

The Time’s Up campaign, which has already been adopted by thousands of women from blue-collar workplaces and Tinseltown alike, is a project working to implement a number of corrective measures against discrimination in the workplace.

For starters, the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund’s crowdfunding page has already raised almost $15 million in order to provide “subsidized legal support for women and men who have experienced sexual harassment, assault, or abuse in the workplace and while in pursuit of their careers”.

Led by renowned U.S. attorney and women’s rights advocate Anita Hill, the campaign is also working to create and push through several pieces of legislation that will penalize organizations and companies that tolerate sexual harassment in the workplace.

Other efforts initiated by the campaign are encouraging the correction of gender disparities within the workplace, especially in film and television.

Additionally, women of Hollywood will be encouraged to wear black on the red carpet in solidarity with the campaign and other victims of discrimination.
