When Dog Chews Girl’s Beloved Elf on the Shelf, Hospital Works Magic With a Little Help From Santa

Earlier this week, Jenn Thelen woke up to the sound of her 7-year-old daughter Aubrie screaming over a horrific tragedy: the family’s German shepherd had mauled the little girl’s beloved Elf on the Shelf doll named Sam.

Because Santa does not allow anyone to touch the sneaky elves, Aubrie had no idea how Sam could be saved. It was going to take a Christmas miracle to fix the doll’s injuries.

Luckily, Jenn is the nurse manager for the emergency department at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida.

The hospital staff insisted that Santa had given them “magic gloves” that specifically allowed them to touch Sam. Plus, the treatment would be covered by his “elfcare” plan.

Aubrie agreed to the operation, and the nurses wheeled the little doll into the trauma bay for surgery.

True to their word, a surgeon pulled on some magic Yuletide gloves and restored Santa’s little spy to his former self.

“One of our ER team members, Ashley, carefully put Sam back together again and bandaged his injuries all up,” the hospital wrote on their Facebook page. “She even sprinkled some Christmas magic (glitter) on Sam when she was done.”

“Sam was able to go home to Aubrie later that evening. Jenn showed her all the videos and pictures of Sam’s day at the Arnold Palmer Hospital ER. The magic of Christmas and Sam the Elf continues for Aubrie.”

Airline is Offering Early Boarding to Anyone Wearing Ugly Christmas Sweater

As a means of lifting the spirits of anxious travelers this holiday season, Alaska Airlines is having a bit of Yuletide fun with a classic winter tradition: ugly sweaters.

If you’re traveling on Alaska Airlines, Virgin America, or Horizon Air on December 15th, you can get early boarding for your flight by wearing an ugly holiday sweater.

The airline said in a statement that they were hosting the promotion in honor of National Ugly Sweater Day.

“Travel during the holidays can be stressful for guests, especially those who do not travel often,” said Natalie Bowman, the company’s managing director of marketing. “This fun promotion not only allows guests to board early on that day, but gives people another opportunity to dust off that ugly holiday sweater hanging in the back of their closet.”

Airline workers will be posting pictures of the most festive get-ups on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram pages under the hashtag #MostWestCoast.

Buying a Coffee and a Muffin at Restaurant Drive-thru Saves a Stranger’s Life

Every day that Glen Oliver orders his morning coffee at the Tim Horton’s drive-thru window, he insists on paying for the order of the person behind him. He also asks the restaurant workers to tell the customer to have a great day “in case they’re not already having one”.

Oliver has never made a big deal out of his own generous actions; he has always just considered it to be the least that he could do for humanity.

But after a letter was published by a news website in November, he found out that he had not just bought someone their breakfast – he had saved their life.

RELATEDHow a Lost Purse Got a Heroin Addict on the Path to Recovery

According to an opinion column published by the Durham Region news outlet, someone had written a letter stating that on July 18th, they were planning on committing suicide.

The anonymous writer said that while they were at the Tim Horton’s drive-thru in Pickering, Ontario, they were planning on going home, writing out a note, and ending their life; but when they went to pay for their coffee and muffin, the cashier told them that the man in the SUV in front of them had picked up the tab and told them to have a great day.

“I wondered why someone would buy coffee for a stranger for no reason,” said the writer. “Why me? Why today? If I was a religious sort I would take this as a sign. This random act of kindness was directed at me on this day for a purpose.”

When they arrived home, they started to sob and think about the simple good deed that had affected them so deeply.

“I decided at that moment to change my plans for the day and do something nice for someone. I ended up helping a neighbor take groceries out of her car and into the house.”

The writer says that in the months following that fateful event, they now try and do at least one kind thing for someone else every day, which as a result has “enriched my life in more ways than I could’ve imagined.”

“To the nice man in the SUV … thank you from the bottom of my heart, and know your kind gesture has truly saved a life,” they said. “On July 18, 2017, I not only had a great day, I had the greatest day!”

When Oliver read about the person’s reaction in the newspaper, he could not contain his emotions.

“It’s the least I can do for some people you know? It’s like holding the door,” Oliver told Global News. “It’s exponential now, you know? Like such a small, insignificant thing to most people just turned out to be … the planets align for somebody.”

The Psychology of Healing Addiction, Abuse, and Trauma

Title: The Psychology of Healing Addiction, Abuse, and Trauma

The Lesson: Healing from intense emotional experiences does not happen overnight – it can literally take years of rewiring someone’s brain in order to get past certain traumas. But if you – or any of your loved ones – have experienced these kinds of circumstances, here is some invaluable advice from an expert on trauma, addiction, emotional and sexual abuse, and anger management.

Notable Excerpt: “The thing that I’m thinking about all the time that might be interesting to other people is how bodily-based a lot of our experiences are – that the idea of looking in the brain for all the answers is a mistake. The brain is a processing unit, there is a lot going on there, but we have all these other systems in our body that are just as complex.”

The Guest: Over the course of his 30-year career in psychology, health, and counseling, Dr. Drew Pinsky has become a goldmine of information on dealing with trauma. Dr. Drew is the author of several bestselling self-help books, including “Cracked: Life on the Edge in a Rehab Clinic” and “The Mirror Effect”. In addition to hosting multiple hit podcasts, such as The Dr. Drew and Adam Show and the Dr. Drew Show, he is famous for hosting several reality TV shows and self-help radio segments.

The Host: After spending years of his young life and athletic career struggling with his own emotional wellbeing, a crippling injury left Lewis Howes without an identity and without any work. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, however, Howes recreated himself as a multi-million dollar media producer, motivational speaker, bestselling author, and podcast host. The ex-football player now spends his days chatting with the most inspirational icons of this generation on his School of Greatness podcast.

Podcast: The School of Greatness podcast is available for download on Soundcloud and iTunes. You can also watch footage of the interviews on Howes’s YouTube channel.

Books: Howes is the author of the New York Times bestselling book “The School of Greatness”: an in-depth collection of lessons and wisdom that he has gathered from interviewing hundreds of the world’s greatest role models and thinkers. Howes’s latest book, “The Mask of Masculinity”, is based on his experience with the dangerous stereotypes and expectations that are placed on men in modern society.

More Than 200 Nations Promise to Stop Ocean Plastic Waste

Over 200 countries signed a resolution this week that promised to collectively eliminate plastic waste in the oceans.

The agreement, which was posed by the United Nations, declared that each nation would start to monitor their country’s packaging methods in favor of more environmentally friendly alternatives.

RELATEDIn Major Game-Changer, Norway Pushed to Divert its Massive Wealth Out of Fossil Fuel

“There is very strong language in this resolution,” Norway’s environment minister, Vidar Helgesen, told Reuters. “We now have an agreement to explore a legally binding instrument and other measures and that will be done at the international level over the next 18 months.”

The resolution was initiated by Norway at an environmental summit in Nairobi, Kenya. Though the agreement is not legally binding, 39 governments were spurred to pass legislation that aligned with the goals the very same day.

South Africa and Cameroon in particular joined the ranks of nations banning single-use plastic bags.

Sleepy 2-Year-old Asks Santa for the Simplest Gift Imaginable

When Santa asked what this 2-year-old girl wanted for Christmas, she had a very relatable request.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Santa was taking holiday requests from kids at Bering’s hardware store in Houston, Texas.

Once Linden Bartell climbed onto Saint Nick’s lap, he asked her what she wanted for Christmas.

RELATEDBoy With Autism Breaks Silence, Tells Santa First Christmas Wish

Unfazed by the ordeal, Linden casually rubbed some sleep out of her eyes and said: “I want to take a nap.”

With a smile, Kris Kringle replied: “Santa does too.”

Linden then snuggled into his fluffy white beard while onlookers melted at the endearing exchange.

Because Santa had to keep taking orders from other children on his nice list, Linden did not necessarily get the long winter’s nap that she was hoping for – but her dad Allen says that she was able to get an early night once the family got home from their holiday shopping.

How to Find Yourself When You’re Feeling Lost or Detached

File photo by Junaid Ali, CC

Title: How to Find Yourself When You’re Feeling Detached

The Lesson: When you get caught up in the stresses of everyday life, it’s easy to become disconnected with who you are and what you have going on in your life. Whether it’s work, relationships, or finances that are causing you anxiety, many people tend to lose sight of how blessed they are based on these distractions.

While you may feel emotionally trapped and at the mercy of your own negative feelings, there is a formula for reconnecting with yourself – and it’s pretty easy to understand.

Notable Excerpt: “You have two choices in life: if life doesn’t match your blueprint, you either have to change your life … or – in order for you to be happy – if you can’t change your life, then you have to change your blueprint.”

Watch Cat Take Drastic Action to Stop Her Human From Singing About Her in the Bathtub

Some people enjoy singing in the shower – but not Pepé the cat.

Pepé apparently hates when her owner Brad Johnsen sings in the bathtub – and that is exactly why he posted a hilarious video of himself doing just that.

While Pepé can be seen stalking her human from the tile, Johnsen sings a little ditty about his feline friend’s hatred of his bathtub past-time.

RELATEDSoothe Your Anxiety By Watching This Little Elephant Bob For Apples

Johnsen can be heard belting: “Cause I’m singin’ in the bathtub and my kitty doesn’t like it, she gets really annoyed… I don’t know why you don’t like my beautiful voice so I sing and sing and sing!”

As he continues singing, Pepé starts to slowly move around the tub and Johnsen becomes “a little nervous cause she’s kinda mean”.

Finally, Pepé reaches her limit and forcefully gets her human to stop.

The video cuts off before we can find out whether Johnsen survives the encounter, but one thing is for sure – he wasn’t kidding when he said that Pepé hated singing in the bathtub.

Check Out This Record-Breaking Rainbow That Blessed Taiwan For 9 Hours

Students at a school in Taiwan were treated to a rare and delightful site last week: a rainbow that allegedly stretched over the valley for nine hours.

If confirmed, the rainbow in Taipei could set the world record for the longest-lasting rainbow in history.

The last world record was set by a 6-hour rainbow in Yorkshire, England back in 1994. The average rainbow, on the other hand, usually lasts about one hour.

“It was amazing… It felt like a gift from the sky… It’s so rare!” said Chou Kun-hsuan, a professor in the university’s Department of Atmospheric Sciences, according to the BBC.

Kun-hsuan, alongside his fellow professors and students of the Chinese Culture University, did their best to document the rainbow.

Collectively, students and teachers took 10,000 photos that they plan on using to apply for the world record.

Title: Spiritual Weight Training and Becoming a Peaceful Warrior

The Lesson: The phrase “peaceful warrior” may seem somewhat contradictory, but there may be more to it than you think. This lesson on spiritual weight training in particular covers everything from the difference between feeling positive emotions and acting as a positive person; suggestions for people going through life transitions; and how to take care of your health when you’re young.

Notable Excerpt: “Many people have heard that saying ‘when the student is ready, the teacher appears’ – it becomes sort of a cliché. But I think what it means – ‘when the student is ready’ – is that any of us, whenever we’re really paying attention, the teacher appears everywhere.”

The Guest: Over the course of his complex career, Dan Millman has become an expert on the way of the peaceful warrior. In fact, he has published 17 books on it, one of which has been translated into 29 languages and turned into an intensely spiritual cinematic masterpiece. Additionally, Millman has become a spiritual mentor to thousands of students through his online eCourse programs.

How Incredibly Successful People Think

Title: How Successful People Think

The Lesson: Anyone can be successful, no matter their background. It’s all about making a conscious decision to pursue things that you are not good at. Unsuccessful people tend to stop pondering success when they hit a road block that seems too hard to overcome. Successful people, on the other hand, know that success isn’t about luck – it’s about learning how to do the things that you can’t do so you can become the person you want to be.

Notable Excerpt: “Success itself is not some big mystery that people haven’t figured out before even though … it can feel like this arduous unknowable process. Success has been figured out and we all know it’s a mindset game. Most of success is just about how we use our psychology.”

The Speaker: Brendon Burchard once went bankrupt from pursuing his dream of being a motivational speaker – now, he is a multi-millionaire. When Guy Sees Napping Restaurant Cook, He Lets Them Sleep and Prepares, Pays For His Own Meal

When a Waffle House employee was having trouble keeping their eyes open during the graveyard shift, Alex Bowen was not about to stop them from getting some much-needed sleep.

Instead, he decided to take manners into his own hands.

Bowen had originally walked into the West Columbia, South Carolina restaurant at 3AM in search of something to eat after a night of drinking. After unsuccessfully waiting 10 minutes for someone to assist him in the deserted restaurant, he finally went back into the kitchen and saw the exhausted employee slumped over a table.

Bowen told Inside Edition: “As soon as I walked around the bar to go to the back and I noticed one employee sleeping, I looked at her for a few seconds and I thought about waking her up but I thought ‘this employee is probably tired, I got you fam, I’ll take care of it’.”

Bowen then made himself his own steak and cheese sandwich, gobbled his meal down, cleaned up after himself, and quietly left the restaurant. He didn’t dine and dash, however – Bowen later returned to the restaurant so he could pay for his food when a cashier was present.

Youngster Travels 1,000 Miles to Meet 81-Year-old Lady He Met on ‘Words With Friends’

A picture speaks more than a thousands words – and these two individuals are particularly good with words.

22-year-old Spencer Sleyon and 81-year-old Rosalind “Roz” Guttman have spent the last year developing a friendship built on their rivalry in the crossword puzzle game, Words With Friends. Then, last week, they came together in person for the first time.

Considering Sleyon is an aspiring young rapper from Harlem, he is not the mostly likely counterpart for Guttman: a senior resident at a West Palm Beach retirement community in Florida. But since the app first paired them as opponents, the two have battled in over 324 games of wit.

Over the course of their virtual competition, the two would send messages to each other with criticism, compliments, and chit-chat. As the months passed, the senior and the youngster became close friends.

RELATEDHow a Lost Purse Got a Heroin Addict on the Path to Recovery

When Sleyon mentioned his unique online friendship to his pastor Amy Butler, she was thrilled by the sweet story. Butler asked if she could use the story of their friendship in her sermon about how “relationships change us”.

After giving the sermon, however, Butler wanted the story to take one step further—she wanted Sleyon and Guttman to meet each other in person.

Sleyon and Butler confirmed a meet-up with Guttman, booked their tickets to Florida, and hopped on the plane.

Butler snapped a selfie with the musician and tweeted it with the caption reading: “She’s 86 and lives in a retirement community in Florida. He’s 22 and lives in Harlem. They met online playing #WordsWithFriends. Tomorrow they’ll meet in person. I get to be there. #RelationshipsChangeUs.”

The Words With Friends Twitter page responded, adding to the avalanche of emotional reactions across the internet. Their response to the social media tale read: “We can’t get enough of this! Amazing. Thank you for sharing your story with us.”

Butler was able to snap some sweet photos of the moment Sleyon and Guttman first laid eyes on each other.

Judging by the expressions on their faces, it looks like words finally failed them.

Girl’s Christmas Wish Comes True When 400K Strangers Follow Dad’s Hotel Carpet Instagram

Have you ever been at a hotel and noticed that the carpets are a little funkier than the ones you might see in an average home?

Maybe you haven’t noticed, but Bill Young certainly does. In fact, he takes pictures of hotel carpets and posts them to an Instagram account specifically dedicated to the cause.

While Bill’s hobby is certainly unique, he didn’t have much of a social media following for it until recently.

Bill’s daughter, Jill, published a Tweet last month in which she asked people to help make her dad’s Instagram account go viral.

The Youngs hoped that it would garner a few extra followers for Bill and his carpet art.

Jill’s plan worked — although, that’s a huge understatement because Bill’s Instagram gained thousands of new followers overnight.

Needless to say, Christmas came early this year for the Youngs thanks to a bunch of strangers on the internet.

Homeless Man Tears Open Deadlocked Door and Rescues Kids From Smoke-Filled Home

When a house went up in flames on Friday, a homeless man risked his own life to rescue two children trapped inside.

Anival Angulo, who lives on the streets of Las Vegas, heard a 3-year-old girl and 10-month-old boy yelling for help from behind the door of their home. Something had caught fire on the kitchen stove, and smoke was starting to pour out of the house.

Even though the children’s grandfather had been babysitting the two youngsters, he had gone into a back room and forgotten about the food in the kitchen. When it caught fire, the senior was unable to make it through the fire to rescue the kids.

Angulo, however, was able to jump the fence, tear open the deadlocked screen door, and pull the children to safety.

“I wrapped up the babies and pulled them out,” Angulo told KSNV. “I knew I had to get them out.”

Meanwhile, the neighbors ran to the rescue of the grandfather and managed to pull him out from a window in the back of the home.
