98-Year-old Walking 6 Miles to His Wife’s Bedside Every Day Inspires Strangers to Donate Thousands

This 98-year-old man is not about to let age or exhaustion keep him from being with his wife.

Luther Younger has been married to Waverlee for over 50 years, and he has always been there for her through her host of health problems. Waverlee, who is paralyzed, has been struggling with brain cancer since she was diagnosed in 2009.

She has now been hospitalized for two weeks – and as a means of being with his wife, Luther has insisted on walking 6 miles to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York every day, rain or shine.

According to local news reports, Luther has always been an avid walker, but he is now all the more eager to hit the road if it means he gets to be with his beloved Waverlee.

“She’s the best cup of tea I ever had,” Luther told Spetrum News Rochester. “I ain’t nothing [without Waverlee].”

His daughter Lutheta always offers to give him rides to the hospital, but he often gets too antsy to wait around.

She has since started a GoFundMe page to help raise money for rides and medical expenses – and after just one day, it has already garnered over $20,000 in donations.

Watch Brave Man Free Moose Trapped By Tree Branches

When a distressed moose was desperately trying to free itself from a web of tree branches, a brave Swedish man stepped up to help.

Leif Gisslen was on his usual morning walk through the small town of Vindo in Stockholm County when he found a 2-year-old moose with its antlers tangled in the ropes of a swing that was attached to a tree.

The 440-pound (200 kilogram) animal can be seen bucking and twisting wildly as it tries to free itself – but to no avail.

Gisslen and his neighbor fetched a bar so he could cut the branches away and free the animal. Wisely positioning himself behind the safety of a tree truck, Gisslen then starts sawing away at the branches.

As the branches fall away, the moose gets progressively more calm until finally – once Gisslen has successfully freed it – it gallops away into the woods.

Sea Urchins Save Coral Reefs Where Man Accidentally Almost Strangled Them

Back in the 1970s, a curious scientist introduced a non-native algae species into the delicate ecosystem of Hawaii’s Kāne’ohe Bay. He thought the algae would be good to boost the productivity of aquaculture businesses in the area – but the algae proved to be far too productive, and the rampant blooms soon spread far beyond the purposed area, smothering the beautiful coral beds at the bottom of the bay for the last 50 years.

For years, organized teams of divers would swim down to occasionally cut up the invasive algae to free the coral reefs from the choking undersea plant, but the process was slow, tiring, and expensive. Now, however, a team of researchers have found a way to step back and let nature take care of things herself.

Scientists at the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources have enlisted help from little black sea urchins to roll back the green curtain.

They have begun lining the bottom of the algae-cloaked bay with colonies of native urchins; “underwater grazers” that can eat up the algae far faster than humans can cut it away.

LOOKAfter Planting a Tree Every Day for 40 Years, Man Has Created Blossoming Forest on Barren Wasteland

At first the quarter-grown, spiky young fellows couldn’t make any headway, so divers employed a super vacuum to suck most of the large suspended blooms up onto their ship.

The removal of the big fronds gave the urchins just the opportunity they needed, and after placing 100,000 of the urchins on the reefs over the course of the last two years, the invasive algae mats were reduced by 85%.

RELATEDWorld’s Second Largest Coral Reef Has Just Been Removed From Endangered List

“With manual removal, you’re spending a lot of time and human hours and effort to take algae off the reef, and there’s no guarantee it won’t come right back,” Kostantinos Stamoulis, a biologist at the University of Hawaii, Mānoa, told National Geographic. “And in many cases that’s exactly what happens. With biocontrol, you’re letting nature itself take care of the problem.”

With the urchins of Kāne’ohe Bay proving to be such a success in the field of algae munching, the team is looking out for other reefs and other opportunities to utilize them across the rest of Hawaii.

“The great lesson, from this whole natural experiment,” another research told Nat Geo, “[is] let’s think twice before we bring things from outside.”

Anonymous Woman Just Gave $100 to Every Teacher in Her District So They Could Buy School Supplies

An anonymous donor has just gifted a $100 bill to every teacher in a Kentucky school district.

When the teachers of Pendleton County Schools showed up for the opening day of the school year earlier this week, they were surprised to learn that a woman had given them all cash donations to buy school supplies.

With 143 teachers in the school district, the donation totaled up to $14,300 – and the educators were understandably blown away by the compassionate gesture.

Karen Delaney of the Pendleton County Education Foundation says that the woman had phoned in the donation and expressed her desire to thank the teachers for all they do.

“She (the donor) said, ‘I just want to do something to show teachers that there are people out there that,’ this is a quote, ‘that have their back, and support them in what they do every day for students, and then recognize that they give so much more than they are compensated,’” said Delaney, according to WLWT.

Man Risks Life to Save His Parrot From Deep Mud, Heroes Come to Rescue

A man became stuck in waist-deep mud earlier this week trying to save his parrot – luckily, the local firefighters knew how to help the ensnared duo.

The man from Belleville, Illinois often goes biking around the neighborhood with his pet bird on his shoulder. As they were passing the dredged lakes of Bicentennial Park this weekend, the parrot accidentally got stuck in the mud.

The owner tried to rescue his bird only to become trapped in the dangerous sludge himself.

Thankfully, someone heard the man calling for help and dialed the fire department. Rescue crews arrived on the scene and devised a plan to get him out.

RELATEDMinutes After Saying ‘I Do’, Hero Groom Jumps Into the Ocean to Save Drowning Teen

“He was probably several hundred feet out into the mud with the parrot on his back,” Fire Chief Tom Pour told the Belleville-News Democrat. “It was challenging because you couldn’t just walk out there and hoist him out. It was like quicksand.”

The firefighters collected several ladders which they used to create a kind of bridge across the drier areas of the muddy lake. Then, they crawled across the ladders until they were close enough to haul the man and his parrot – both of whom were fortunately unharmed – out of the pit.

The grateful man was given a thorough hosing down after the rescue, which brought a pleasant end to an “unusual and dangerous situation”, says the fire department.

10 Years After Banning Lead Paint and Other Hazards for U.S. Kids, These Are the Results

This week marks the 10th anniversary of a landmark piece of American legislation that has saved countless children from hazards such as lead paint, while cutting the rate of nursery and crib deaths significantly.

The 2008 Consumer Product Safety Information Act (CPSIA) passed through the Senate and House with overwhelming bipartisan support in response to record numbers of product recalls issued for safety hazards. From the much publicized lead paint levels in children’s toys, to hazardous chemicals, faulty cribs, tiny magnets, and more, such recalls—including one of over 25 million toys—spurred Congress to take action in order to ensure the safety of America’s children.

After the CPSC restricted the amount of lead or lead paint in products meant for children, violations dropped dramatically. In 2007, more than one hundred products were recalled for containing lead—10 years later there was only one.

The law gave the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) an important tool in the form of an independent regulatory agency to reform the industry. This allowed the Commission to take much harsher legal action to deter violators and reprimand lawbreakers with civil penalties in response to code-violations and negligence.

RELATEDFrance Just Banned Smartphone Use in Schools

Other benefits we as consumers owe to the CPSIA include:

  • A flat, industry-wide safety code and manufacturing standards for toys.
  • A mandatory compliance requirement on third-party testing of any product.
  • A ban on eight varieties of phthalates – a chemical used to soften plastic, but which also acts as an endocrine disrupter and has been linked with breast cancer, developmental issues, decreased fertility, and asthma.
  • A consumer-based incident database, www.safeproducts.gov where the CPSC can monitor trends in various products.
  • For nursery products such as cribs, stringent mandatory standards were established regarding the rigidity, strength, and safety testing of the products, which also includes high chairs, strollers, beds, play yards, swings, carriers, and cradles.

Between 2006 to 2008 and 2012 to 2014, the percentage of deaths associated with cribs that were attributable to crib integrity (vs. hazardous crib surroundings) had decreased from 32 percent to 10 percent.

The law also added nursery product registration cards, allowing for, if necessary, rapid targeting during recalls following a malfunction or incident.

MORETwo US States Have Become the First to Require Mental Health Education in School

“The CPSIA represents the most significant strengthening of product safety laws since the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) was created,” stated Rachel Weintraub, Legislative Director and general counsel at Consumer Federation of America.

Today, thanks to the passage of CPSIA, most hazards are caught long before they reach store shelves, allowing American consumers to rest easier, assured that the toys and other goods in their homes are most likely safe.

10-Year-old Rescues Newborn Using Skills She Learned From Watching Youtube Videos

A 10-year-old girl came to the rescue of her aunt and cousin earlier this week thanks to her adoration for baby dolls.

Chloe Carrion was home alone with her aunt in Fairfax, Virginia when she heard her relative scream from the bathroom and say that she had just given birth to a baby.

At first, Chloe didn’t believe her. Her aunt had been keeping her pregnancy a secret from the family because she was scared and overwhelmed. When she was at home with her niece, she had gone to the bathroom for stomach pain only to find out that she was in labor. As she was sitting on the toilet, she suddenly gave birth.

Chloe finally ran to join her aunt in the bathroom. Her aunt, who was suffering from blood loss, handed Chloe the baby and climbed into the bathtub to lie down because she had lost a lot of blood. Then, she fell down and passed out unconscious.

The 10-year-old niece immediately called 911 before calling her mother and alerting her to the situation.

Chloe then remembered a series of YouTube videos that she had watched about taking care of baby dolls, so she decided to use the techniques taught in the video to care for her newborn cousin.

She cleaned up the baby, swaddled him, and even cut the umbilical cord with the help of a 911 dispatcher’s coaching.

By the time paramedics arrived alongside Chloe’s mother, the 10-year-old was in control of the situation.

“Chloe was just standing at the front door with the baby swaddled, and she was rocking him back and forth,” her mother told WJLA. “I’m very proud of her. She was so brave. Even as an adult, I don’t think I could have done what she did.”

Chloe’s aunt, who was taken to the hospital after the incident, has every intention of raising the baby after its sudden arrival. She even let Chloe name the little baby boy Isaac.

Group of Birds Employed by French Theme Park to Pick Up Trash

An unlikely new group of freelance employees have been added to a French workforce.

At the Puy du Fou theme park in western France, six birds have been employed to collect and dispose of garbage – mainly cigarette ends and other small pieces.

As payment for their services, the birds take the collected trash to special bins where they can receive bird food in exchange for depositing the litter.

“The park is very clean,” park president Nicolas de Villiers told NPR. “The purpose of the crows … is to educate the people, to open their minds, to think, ‘OK, the birds are able to do something that we are much more able to do than them, so we should do this by ourselves.’”

Corvids like crows, ravens, magpies, and rooks have long been observed for their startling displays of intelligence. They are one of the smartest groups of animals on earth, with remarkable problem solving, tool making, and deductive reasoning skills.

In addition to inspiring humans to pick up their trash, the clever rooks currently working at the park are pretty excited to put their wits to work.

“It became a game for them,” de Villiers says. “They pick up the papers on the floor, and they are rewarded.”

When Teacher Posts Plea for More Sick Days, School Staffers From Across the Country Donate Theirs

When a Florida school teacher posted a plea for help on social media, his fellow educators did not hesitate to step forward.

Robert Goodman has been undergoing surgery and chemotherapy for stage three colon cancer. Since receiving the diagnosis in April, he has used all 38 of the paid leave days that he has racked up from working at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School for the last 23 years.

Anxious for the future, Goodman posted a photo to Facebook saying that he needed at least 20 more paid leave days to finish treatment without being hurt financially.

Within four days, the 56-year-old educator was flooded with messages from fellow school staffers across the country saying that they wanted to donate their paid leave.

It wasn’t just teachers, either – Goodman eventually received 75 sick days from teachers, administrators, college professors, and even cafeteria workers.

“I wasn’t surprised that teachers were giving. Teachers are always giving all the time,” he told CNN. “When one of their own needs help they’ll always step up.”

Neuroscientists Discover a Song That Reduces Anxiety By 65% (Listen)

Of the many epidemics of our time, a devious collection of maladies seem to be both hard to spot, and hard to treat.

Anxiety and anxiety disorders are often characterized, even as far back as the ancient Greeks, by dread, panic, and relentless worrying about things which one feels they have no control over. And while most treatment plans involve pharmaceuticals or cognitive therapy, a new song, specifically designed to aid in relieving anxiety’s grip, has produced startlingly positive results.

There have been a number of studies and surveys done on which members of our society suffer most from anxiety or anxiety disorders, with Generation Y and Millennials coming in at the top.

While observable anxiety is nothing new, 57% of young women claim to have experienced “overwhelming anxiety,” with 30% saying they suffer from panic attacks.

MOREWatching Birds Near Your Home is Good For Your Mental Health

Some suggest this is due to exam-focused school setups, overprotective or controlling parenting styles, and widespread access to technology. Instant and continuous access to social media has been touted as a problem for anxiety-susceptible youth, who are constantly having their lives critiqued, or compared with the lives of others.

A more sedentary lifestyle can also lead to symptoms of anxiety. Dopamine released during physical activities like walking or running gives you a feel-great feeling of accomplishment, and getting outside in the sun aids in the synthesizing of Vitamin-D, which is shown to improve mood.

Sleep deprivation is another real potential danger, and no one except maybe the nuclear scientists of the 1950s-60s get less sleep than your average college-aged student today.

LOOKKid Therapist Raises Money by Offering Advice to Stressed New Yorkers

With considerable numbers of Americans on some form of mood-altering pharmaceutical for things like depression or anxiety, drugs dominate the treatment field for most people. They are quick, easy, and cheap, and don’t involve the nasty self-reflection that comes from counseling.

Another approach to soothing the difficulties from anxiety is called music therapy. A new song developed specifically by sound therapists from the British Academy of Sound Therapy stands out among other songs tested for its success in soothing the mind and alleviating symptoms of anxiety.

Schwarzenegger Cheers Depressed Stranger On the Internet Who Asked Him for Motivation

Actor and former governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger has been using an online bodybuilding forum to joke around with his fans – but when one user asked for help dealing with his depression, the Terminator did not hesitate to offer up some sincere motivation.

The exchange began on a video that Schwarzenegger posted to the bodybuilding page of Reddit this week.

One user commented on the video, saying: “I know this is pandering but, I’ve been depressed for months and haven’t hit the gym during that time. Mr. Schwarzenegger can you please tell me to get off my lazy a** and hit the gym? I swear to everything I hold dear that I will snap out of it and go.”

The very same day, Schwarzenegger responded.

“I’m not going to be that hard on you,” wrote the celebrity. “Please don’t be that hard on yourself. We all go through challenges, we all go through failure. Sometimes life is a workout. But the key thing is you get up. Just move a little. Roll out of bed and do some pushups or go for a walk. Just do something. One step at a time, I hope you feel better and get back to the gym. But don’t beat yourself up, because that’s just useless talk. It doesn’t get you closer to the gym. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Good luck.”

Not surprisingly, the advice definitely helped. Upon the kind note from his movie star hero, the user later wrote back to say that he was getting back on his feet.

“I’m not kidding, I just jumped out of bed when I received this notification. Arnold, thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to reply,” wrote the Redditor. “I’m getting dressed and heading to the gym, I’ll be doing a 5×5 routine (squats, overhead press, deadlift) to get the rust off and will snap out of it. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

“I wish everybody reading this comment could know how good it feels to have Arnold Schwarzenegger personally give you encouragement, I feel overwhelmed (in a good way) and as cliché as it sounds, I do have tears of joy in my eyes,” he added. “Off to the gym!!”

Touched by the exchange, Schwarzenegger even followed up with the guy the next day to check up on his progress. Leader Named ‘Roosevelt’ Leads Caribbean Nation in Banning Plastics and Styrofoam

After a tropical storm brought a tidal wave of plastic debris and garbage bobbing along the Caribbean island’s famously beautiful shoreline, Dominica, joined the global fight to combat ocean pollution with a bold proclamation.

By January of 2019, the nation plans on eliminating common plastics, such as single-use straws, and Styrofoam food items.

The aptly-named Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit claims that the ban will aid in the restoration of more remote regions, as better solid waste management practices are put into effect.

Sharing more similarities with the former American president than just his name, Skerrit also displayed his devotion to the natural landscape of his country. He said at a budget meeting in June that “Dominica prides itself as the ‘Nature Isle,’” and his country “must in every way deserve and reflect that designation.”

RELATEDInstead of Tossing it Back, 5,000 Indian Fishermen Now Collect Ocean Plastic to Build Roads and Prosperity

“We must rebuild and reset our society and economy, and protect our environment in order to achieve a new, more resilient Dominica,” he added.

Other ocean-encircled countries, such as New Zealand, Great Britain, and Australia have already committed to the removal of certain plastics with great success. The implementation of a mere 5 pence tax on each plastic bag sold in the UK was enough to reduce the amount of plastic bags on UK beaches by 40% the very next year.

MOREHe Has Created a Single-Use Bottle That Fully Decomposes in 3 Weeks, and All Profits to Charity

However, the “Nature Isle” is taking the environmental movement one step further by also removing plastic plates, forks, and knives, with a full list of prohibited items expected later this year closer to the installment of the ban in January.

With Dominica taking urgent action, one can hope the Caribbean nation will be the ‘Nature Isle’ for many years to come.
