Thanks to GNN Fans, a Generous Homeless Man Got a Proper Funeral (Photos)

In a heartwarming update, I received photos from the funeral that Good News Network fans largely funded for a homeless veteran. The man’s daughter was so touched by your generosity that she praised GNN in both the memorial program and booklet—and in the obituary published in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

– By Geri Weis-Corbley, Founder and Editor-in-Chief

In the fall of 2016, we posted a story about Steve Knoke, who was living on the prosperous streets of Santa Barbara and, in his words, was “doing fine.” I struck up a conversation with him, so he sat next to me on a park bench. A young woman walked up to him and gave him her pizza restaurant leftovers, and I watched as he happily shared his good fortune with three other homeless folks who saw he had food and asked for a hand-out.

Steve Knoke was a military veteran and an artist—I bought one of his pictures that day—but, most importantly, he was kind and sober about life.

Only a few months had passed when I got an email out of the blue from the man’s daughter, April. First, she thanked me for publishing the article (which she discovered after googling her dad’s name). It had illuminated for her family the years of his life that they had no knowledge of, or connection to whatsoever.

Woman Brings Meals to Homeless Man Twice–After She Sees Him Share With Others

“Without your article,” Ms. Knoke wrote, “we wouldn’t have had this glimpse of who he was for the last 17 years.”

And then she told me Steve had suddenly died, soon after moving back to Minnesota and reuniting with his brother and daughters.

April mentioned they had no money for a funeral and had set up a Go Fund Me campaign. I jumped at the chance to let GNN readers, by way of donating, express their appreciation for the way this 63-year-old man lived his life.

We also posted photos of Steve as a young man and, as a result, with a couple thousand dollars flowing in from people they’d never met, April said they were able to arrange a “quaint funeral.”

“I read the story on GNN, and saw the amazing pictures,” wrote Thomas Casserly, who donated money. “Condolences on Steven’s passing and I hope this helps you honour him in the way you desire.”

“Love his art drawing and poem in the GNN article,” added Melvin Canas, another donor. “Always sad to see a fellow human with great heart and talent move on from this life. But his soul is now resting and he has left inspiration for the rest of us still here.”

He was a traveler, a wanderer, a kind homeless man, an artist, a poet, a brother, a son and a friend. – Memorial program

“I just have to thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul for everything you and the Good News Network Community did,” she wrote in an email this month.

“I can’t thank you enough. You are truly a miracle.”

Pitcher Runs, Not to Cheering Teammates but, to Comfort the Batter After Season-Ending Strike-Out

This young pitcher may have won the big game for his high school’s baseball team, but his true character shined forth after he threw the final pitch.

Mounds View High School was winning 4-0 against the Totino-Grace team in the final game of the season. Whichever team ended up on top would move on to the Minnesota state championships.

Senior pitcher Ty Koehn was on the mound with just one more batter to beat before they would win the game. When Koehn successfully struck out the batter, his teammates rushed onto the field in celebration—but the hurler did just the opposite.

He ran towards the plate so he could comfort the batter.

He had been friends with Jack Kocon since they played in Little League together. Even though they ended up going to different schools, they stayed friends over the years.

When Koehn’s pitching ended the season for Jack last week, he said that he “instinctually” ran towards his dejected friend and wrapped him up in a hug, offering encouragement.

As Koehn recalled the incident to WCCO, he remembers telling Jack: “You had a great season, you’re a great player and don’t let this situation, don’t let this outcome affect our friendship… I told him I loved him and he’s my brother and our friendship will always last longer than this silly game.”

The encouragement did not fall on deaf ears, either.

“In 20 years I’m not gonna remember the score of that game. But I’m gonna remember him coming up to me after that and just kind of being there for me when I needed someone,” Kocon told the news outlet.

Routine Traffic Stop Uncovers Birth Connection Between Driver and Officer From 27 Years Ago

LISTEN to this Good News Guru story here, which was broadcast on the radio June 15th with Ellen K and Geri on KOST-103.5 — Or, READ the story below… (Subscribe to our podcast on iTunes – or for Androids, on Podbean)

It was just a routine traffic stop when a state trooper pulled over Matthew Bailly on a New Jersey highway earlier this month. The violation was minor, but as they talked for a few minutes they discovered a connection between them that was major.

Probably hoping for mercy, Bailly quickly brought up the fact that he was a retired police officer from Piscataway. Officer Patterson replied that he, too, was from the same town, some 40 miles away.

Making more small talk, the driver asked the young trooper where he grew up. After hearing the name of the street—Poe Place—he said he knew that exact road because 27 years ago, a woman had suddenly gone into labor there.

Bailly, who was just a rookie cop four years into his career, arrived on the scene and, while receiving directions from a doctor over the phone, actually delivered a baby.

The memory was so meaningful to him, he could recall everything about the incident—from the color of the house to the name of the baby: Michael.

Through the window of the car, the trooper then shook Bailly’s hand and said: “My name is Michael Patterson, sir. Thank you for delivering me.”

The New Jersey State Police Department posted photos of the two men to Facebook, saying “We’re not sure what the odds are of this happening—maybe they’re close to the odds of a hole-in-one, winning the lottery, or being struck by lightning—but it happened.”

It was October 1991, when Patterson’s mother was out shopping and suddenly went into labor—and barely made it home. Now that the family was reconnected with the cop who delivered their boy, they invited him over for a reunion that was long overdue—and both families were ecstatic about the meeting.

Hospital Finds Effective Way to Soothe Highly Sensitive Patients Who Fear Needles

Not many people are fond of needles, but for some patients, there is no technique or distraction that can ease their anxiety for those dreaded shots.

But one Australian hospital has published a study on a new procedure that has shown great success for helping needle-phobic patients.

Between the years of 2012 and 2016, the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne experimented with delivering nitrous oxide to patients with anxiety and developmental disorders, who were looking for a way to calm down.

The treatment was only used as a last resort for when distraction techniques and play therapy failed. The suggested nitrous approach had a success rate of 95% – and the 5% of patients who did not endure the shots were those who simply rejected the nitrous treatment. The median age of the patients who elected the nitrous procedure was 13 years old, and 59% of them had been officially diagnosed with a phobia of needles.

RELATEDFirst Ever 3D-Printed Cornea Could Restore Vision for Millions of People

Sonja Elia, who is a co-author of the study and a nurse practitioner in the hospital’s immunization department, says that she hopes that nitrous can be more widely implemented for patients who cannot be calmed – although, she emphasized that the treatment should only be used when all other techniques have failed.

“Working through needle phobia requires flexibility and the implementation of a range of techniques, escalating up to sedation,” she told Pharmacy News. “Once these techniques prove unsuccessful, we would then consider nitrous and oral sedation, depending on the level of anxiety.”

Son Flies to Ontario and Personally Thanks the Restaurant Worker Who Cheered His Ailing Dad

A well-prepared meal can do wonders for your mood—and when it is delivered only for you by a stranger, it arrives like an angel of mercy.

That’s why, when a restaurant worker went above and beyond the call of duty to deliver a special meal to Rick Rhoads’s sick father, the grateful son felt compelled to thank the employee in person.

Rick, who lives in Michigan, was distraught after learning that his 86-year-old father in Pickering, Ontario, was in need of heartier food.

Dale, who has been battling pancreatic cancer while temporarily living at an assisted living home, told his son that he really missed eating some of his favorite foods – primarily cheeseburgers and fries. But since he was unable to leave the facility, Dale could only reminisce about the delicious dinners of his earlier days.

LOOKHospital Grants Dying Patient’s Last Wish For Wine, Cigarette

Hoping that a special meal would cheer up his father, Rick called every burger restaurant in Pickering to ask if they could deliver for a local senior. A dozen establishments told Rick that they could not.

Finally, Carmen Kolandjian, the owner of Kips Flamin’ Burgers, picked up the phone and heard the desperate plea.

At first she hesitated to take the time during her own day to make any food delivery. Then, Rick explained his dilemma.

“After I explained the circumstances of my father’s failing health, and concerns of his recent eating habits, she took it upon herself to extend her compassion and heart to help the son of a man whom she never met before. She finished her shift at work and drove the food to the local assisted living home, asking for nothing in return,” Rhoads told The Star.

True to her word, Kolandjian hand-delivered a burger, french fries, and a side of gravy with a note reading: “Hi Dale, this is from your amazing son, Rick. Enjoy your meal.”

“It just tugged at my heart strings when he told me about his dad,” said Kolandjian. “I always try to do a good deed. I have a soft spot for the elderly.”

Her kindness did not go ignored by Rick. The man traveled from Michigan to Pickering so he could visit his father and stop by the burger joint to personally thank Kolandjian for the gesture – because as he told The Star, “people like that need to be recognized.”

Woman Recreates All the Characters in ‘The Office’ Theme Song With Her Talented Dog (WATCH)

The only thing that could make The Office any more beloved than it is already would be if all the characters were replaced with dogs. Luckily, a creative woman in California has achieved just that.

In what may be the best animal video uploaded recently to the internet, Paulina Lang gave her dog Enzo a starring role in her remake of the NBC comedy show’s opening theme sequence.

Her clip features the Samoyed reenacting several of the characters from the show, including Michael Scott, Dwight Schrute, Ryan Howard, and Andrew “The Nard Dog” Bernard.

In addition to the pup’s theatrical skills, Enzo performs the deeds of a Dunder Woofin’ office, such as scanning a tennis ball; sipping from a “World’s Best Boss” mug; and pawing in some figures on a calculator.

If you’re impressed by Enzo’s talent, you can keep up with his regal social media presence on Instagram and Twitter.

Woman Publicly Thanks Friends For How They Risked Stepping Up During Her Bout With Depression

Not many people know how to help a friend who is suffering from depression – which is why film critic and writer Sheila O’Malley felt compelled to publicly praise her friends for how they helped her when she needed it most.

On the Twitter thread she published last week, O’Malley explained how the death of her father sent her into a grieving spiral. Upon moving to a new apartment, the writer says her mental health prevented her from unpacking any of her belongings.

“For MONTHS, I was ashamed I couldn’t unpack,” says O’Malley. “How can you be UNABLE to unpack? Just open the g.d. boxes. That was the year I cried for 19 days. Straight.”

As she struggled with her condition, her high school friend David did his best to uplift her with words of encouragement and love – neither of which were quite enough to help.

RELATEDThis Update From Unlikely Friendship in 2016 is a Sweet Reminder that Good Things Last

Finally, he took a risk and rallied their friends for a secret unpacking party.

“It very well could have ended badly. I could have lashed out,” says O’Malley. “But he took the risk. He sent out an email to a group of local friends (w/out my knowledge) and said, ‘Sheila is struggling. She needs our help. Let’s all go over there and unpack her apartment for her. Bring food. Let’s make it fun.’”

After ensuring that O’Malley would be home, the determined team of friends showed up at her door ready to get to work.

“At 6 pm on Thursday night the doorbell rang and 10 of my friends barged in, bearing platters of food, cleaning products, and complete unconcern for my ‘Wait … you CAN’T COME IN HERE I HAVEN’T UNPACKED YET’ protestations. They ignored me and got to work.”

MOREBullied Boy Finds Beauty in Himself From Cat With Same Rare Conditions as Him

For the rest of the evening, the crew shelved every book, hung every poster, cleaned every surface, put away every possession, and they even set up a cozy kitchen-based feast of tacos and beer.

“I literally was unable to do THE SIMPLEST THINGS,” O’Malley recalls. “And nobody judged me. They were like superheroes sweeping in.

“At the end of the night, I looked at my friend’s husband – a quiet tactiturn guy who drives a tugboat on the Hudson – practical, man of few words – and I just looked at him, speechless, not knowing how to say thank you, especially to this tough resilient self-sufficient man.

“He looked at me, saw the look on my face, understood the look, understood everything that was behind it – and said, ‘Listen, baby, what we did today was a barn-raising.’”

O’Malley finishes her heart-wrenching tale by explaining that while people with depression are always encouraged to ask for help, the advice doesn’t always land if they are struggling with feelings of shame – which is why she is grateful that her crew had the courage to take the initiative.

“When they all swept out of there 4 hours later, my place was a home,” writes O’Malley. “Not only was everything put away – but now it had a memory attached to it, a group memory, friends, laughing, dirty jokes, hard work. These are the kinds of friends I have. Be that kind of friend to others.”

The writer emphasizes how her friends “took a risk” by sweeping into her home unannounced, but in O’Malley’s words, “being a friend takes commitment” and “a willingness to take that risk.”

Since she posted the moving tale to Twitter, her thread has been shared thousands of times – and she’s grateful that her experience has inspired so many others in similar situations.

“I’m glad I decided to share it. It’s good to be reminded we need to look out for one another. I need the reminder too.”

Most People Don’t Get Enough Vitamin D, But This App Can Fix That

80% of Americans suffer from deficiencies of vitamin D, a vital element to good health—and this app is hoping to help by shining some light on how exactly they can get it.

While you may think going out into the sunshine is enough to get your daily dose of the essential nutrient, there is actually a lot more to it than that. Vitamin D intake varies depending on your hemisphere, the time of day, how much clothing you’re wearing, the color of your skin, the season, and your age and weight.

Even though these variables may seem overwhelming to calculate, Dminder is a new app that does it for you.

Developed by vitamin D expert Dr. Michael Holick, the app uses your information to determine when you should go out into the sun. The platform then calculates your sunbathing so that you can fulfill your intake without getting a sunburn.

RELATEDDrinking Baking Soda Could Be Cheap, Safe Way to Combat Autoimmune Disease, Says Scientists

“Wherever you go in the world, dminder tracks the sun and tells you when you can get Vitamin D,” says Holick. “The stopwatch interface lets you set your session target by either amount of D to get or time. Then it will count up or down to your target, applying all the factors that determine how much D you can get: skin tone, age, weight, amount of skin exposed.”

Plus, it counts any additional supplements you use to continuously estimate your current level.

So if you’re like us and you spend your work days in front of a computer screen, this service could be invaluable to your mental and physical health.

Rescuers Chase and Finally Save Endangered Bird Suffering With Bound Beak

A team of dedicated rescuers have finally caught up to an endangered bird that had been struggling with a plastic ring around its beak – and thanks to their efforts, the elegant animal has been saved.

The black-necked stork was first spotted by a group of Delhi-based birdwatchers last week. Confused by the bird’s odd behavior, the group examined their photos of the stork until they noticed that it had a plastic ring struck around its beak.

Dozens of local volunteers and wildlife groups became determined to save the stork – but their rescue attempts were thwarted for five days.

The Haryana State Pollution Control Board, the Bombay National History Society, and several other nonprofits and forest groups reportedly used drones to track the bird’s movements until finally, as the stork became weaker, its flights slowed down enough for rescuers to capture it.

WATCHOwl That Broke Wings Flying Into Car Window is Enlisted to Teach Orphan Owlets to Hunt

“They found the stork struggling to fly because of dehydration and exhaustion, making it vulnerable to prey. The two chased after the bird for over three kilometres and followed it into a water body till it gave up. They chose to pursue the bird on foot after conventional methods to catch it failed,” Additional Principal Conservator of Forest Vinod Kumar told The Tribune.

Once the ring was removed from the bird’s beak, veterinary specialists took it into their care and announced that apart from hunger and dehydration, it was in good health.

The bird, which was released yesterday, has been tagged for observation in the future.

If You Play Music, You Can Help People Heal By Being a ‘Musician On Call’

If you have a guitar that’s collecting dust in the corner of your house, you now have a way to pick it back up again and put it to use in a very meaningful way.

A nonprofit organization called Musicians On Call recruits volunteer instrumentalists to play music for sick patients in 80 different hospitals across the United States.

For the last 20 years, artists have serenaded over half a million patients who were in need of a smile. In addition to employing volunteers, the nonprofit has also partnered with dozens of celebrity musicians for hospital concerts. Artists such as Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams, and Keith Urban have all participated in the program and helped hospital patients to heal just by using their guitars.

Kelly Clarkson, who also participated in the program, said: “Being involved with Musicians On Call has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.”

“It is healing for us all and I can’t wait to do it again!” she added.

The music isn’t just beneficial for the mental health of patients, either – it’s also good for their physical health. Studies show that listening and playing along to music can alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, dementia, and stress. As a result of this, patients who undergo music therapy are shown to experience lower blood pressure, respiratory rate, and blood pressure. Pediatric patients who experienced musical intervention were also less distressed by pain.

RELATEDThese Street Performers Spend Hours Delighting the Public So Homeless Can Take What They Need

“In the beginning, we were knocking on doors, saying, ‘Hey, this is valuable. This is important,’” Pete Griffin, who is the president of Musicians On Call, told CBS News. “And then what we’ve seen over the past 20 years is that the science has really caught up to what we’re doing. And now, the hospitals are saying this is actually part of the healing process. This isn’t something that’s just a nice thing to do, but this is actually helping our patients.”

If you would like to donate to the organization or volunteer as a musician or program facilitator in the hospitals, you can check out the Musicians On Call website for more information.

In Just 8 Years, Conservation Measures Increased Jaguar Population by 20%

Kali the Destroyer, CC license

In an exciting new conservational victory, the Mexican jaguar population has rebounded by 20% over the course of the last 8 years.

Thanks to a program that was launched by the national government in 2005, there are now an estimated 4,800 of the big cats in Mexico alone. Regional conservation efforts were also implemented in March to protect the species through 2030, according to the report.

There are 64,000 jaguars found worldwide, 90% of which are found in the Amazon rainforest. Though the species was listed as “endangered” in 1972, the big cats are currently “near threatened” – and as more conservational measures are put in place for their protection, researchers are hopeful about the future.

“The presence of jaguars ensures that these ecosystems function, by controlling the population of herbivores, and is also an indicator of the ecosystems’ good health,” said Heliot Zarza, vice president of the National Jaguar Conservation Alliance, in a statement released by the World Wildlife Fund.

There is good news outside of Brazil as well; a 2015 study showed that deforestation in Brazil had plummeted by 90% after the government became more aggressive about creating protected parklands. In April, the top court of Colombia sided with a group of young adults and children who were suing the government for failing to properly protect the Amazon rainforest, which will facilitate new protective legislation during the coming months.

Finally, as a means of contributing to the Paris agreement, several Brazilian organizations and nonprofits launched the world’s largest tropical reforestation project in November 2017, which will amount to 73 million trees planted over the course of the next 7 years.

Watch Sweet Reaction to Son Surprising Dad With ‘Final Trip’ for Father’s Day

With his father’s Alzheimer’s disease accelerating rapidly, this Florida man went above and beyond the call of duty to do something special for Father’s Day.

Earlier this week, Matt Lea spent 12 hours driving from his home in Florida so he could show up on the doorstep of his parent’s house in Flowood, Mississippi. When he finally arrived, he pulled out his phone, walked into the house, and filmed the reactions of his surprised – and delighted – mother and father.

Lea greets his parents and then gives his father Billy a jersey for Mississippi State, which is his favorite baseball team.

But secretly, his gift is much better than a new shirt – he got tickets for he and his dad to go see the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

“Golly,” Billy says, seemingly choked up by the surprise. “You’re gonna break my heart, here.”

Since it was published two days ago, the video has already garnered over 1 million views on Twitter. Social media users have offered to give money to the father-son trip for their room and board, but Matt simply asked them to donate to the Alzheimer’s fund.

Additionally, the video’s fame grabbed the attention of the College World Series of Omaha Inc., the organizing committee for the sports event. The nonprofit commented on the video asking for Matt and Billy’s schedule, which might hint at something special for the Leas during their weekend stay.

‘Misbehaved’ Class Comes Together to Help Cash-Strapped Teacher

Everybody knows that a teacher’s career isn’t easy, especially if money is short – but when a classroom of sweet students came up with a solution for their teacher’s financial problems, the result was priceless.

Middle school teacher Bruno Rafael Paiva from Brejo Santo, Brazil recently started his dream job of being an educator. As he expected, the work was difficult because of student behavior, low wages, and long hours. But everything was made even more grueling by the fact that his first salary was delayed for over two months.

After the second month, his financial condition worsened until he was forced to sleep on his friend’s couch.

“Teacher life is not easy,” Paiva wrote on Facebook. “When I saw that I was not going to receive a month and a half’s salary, I saw everything going black. I sank into depression, worried and lost, without knowing how to pay the bills and help my family.”

RELATEDEvery Single Public School Teacher Got What They Requested Online, Thanks to Cryptocurrency Company

When his students found about about Paiva’s plight, however, they created a raffle to raise money for their beloved teacher.

The youngsters managed to scrounge together R$400 (which is roughly two-thirds of Paiva’s monthly salary).

As a means of surprising him with the gift, the students – in pairs – wrote pieces of apology and acknowledgement for his efforts around the classroom. When Paiva arrived for class, they asked him to go around the room and find the papers so he could read them out loud.

The last note asked him to open a box on his desk. When he saw the money in the box, he started to cry. His students immediately rushed in to hug him.

Ironically, Paiva mentioned that the class is the least-behaved, but sweetest class that he has. Filled with love for his students, he said that they “are the future that I want to always believe in.”

“I have many rooms that I have loved in my heart as a teacher, but no room has ever shown such love, help and affection for my teacher’s work as the class did today,” wrote Paiva. “They are students, like me, who still believe in the education of the country; believe in the love of others; and in the compassion of putting oneself in the place of others.”

Instead of Leaving Your Dog Alone, This App Pairs It With Local Pet Lovers Eager for Companionship

A new “dog-sharing” app is ensuring that pet lovers everywhere can share in the sensation of having an adoring canine companion by their side without the responsibilities or expenses that come with adoption.

The Share A Dog app is a free service that works similarly to Airbnb and Uber – except with people’s dogs. If a dog owner has to work a job that requires long hours at the office, they can list their dog on the app. Caregivers can then offer to take care of the pet – or even take on partial ownership of the dog – while the owner is gone.

The service provides a host of benefits. For starters, the owner doesn’t have to feel guilty about leaving their dog home alone, and the loving canine doesn’t have to spend so much time alone. Families can also save hundreds of dollars in doggy daycare fees and the daily expenses of ownership.

Additionally, the caregivers can benefit from experiencing the joy of hanging out with cute pups without any kind of long-term commitment.

59-year-old dog owner Janet Eggen, who is participating in a dog-sharing schedule, says that her poodle is now being raised by the community since her schedule became increasingly full – and it is apparently working out splendidly.

“There are a lot of people out there who want a dog but are afraid of the full-time responsibility,” Eggen told Freep. “After reading about dog sharing for the first time, I thought, ‘this might be a good solution.’”
