Groundbreaking Invention Helps Workers Stay Cool in 122 Degree Heat

These construction workers already have a demanding job, but thanks to this invention, their long days of labor have been made a lot easier.

Apart from the physical demands faced by workers currently building the World Cup 2022 arena in Qatar, spending long hours under the sun in soaring temperatures can be debilitating—even deadly.

To tackle the problem, the country’s researchers have come up with a new way to keep workers comfortable: a self-cooling hard hat.

Ironically, the hard hat‘s cooling feature depends on the sun. Powered by a solar panel on the top of the hat, the invention contains a small fan that maintains the temperature of the hat’s inner lining. The lining can cool the skin by as much as 50 degrees Fahrenheit (28°C), and lasts for about four hours.

“By reducing the temperature of the head and face, the rest of the body will naturally follow and ensure that workers have a constant flow of cooler air to refresh them throughout their day,” lead researcher Saud Abdul-Aziz Abdul-Ghani told CNN.

With temperatures in Qatar climbing to 122° Fahrenheit (50°C), the helmets have been hailed as a groundbreaking achievement.

Qatar representatives say 18,000 laborers are already working on the construction of eight different World Cup stadiums.

We wonder if the athletes will be begging for the same heat-beating headgear.

Fearless Rats Are Caring for Orphan Kittens at This Loving Cat Cafe

Cats and rats may not seem like the ideal partners, but these little critters are the best of buds – despite their obvious differences.

The Brooklyn Cat Café has enlisted the special help of two rats named Remy and Emile. The rats have a very special job: to befriend and care for orphaned kittens.

Newborn kittens usually depend on their mothers for grooming and love, but since these young felines have been left without parents, they depend on Remy and Emile for nurturing.

The kittens are not always in need of babysitters – once they’re old enough to receive their vaccinations, they are free to join the larger community of older cats.

The idea for this unique inter-species relationship began several years ago when the Brooklyn Cat Café was hosting Ebony; a kitten who was diagnosed with feline leukemia. The virus is highly contagious in cats, which means that infected kitties have to be kept away from their non-infected peers.

As a means of providing Ebony with stimulation, the organization introduced her to Ivory the rat.

The duo’s friendship was rife with romping and play before Ebony passed away from the virus a while later. After observing the positive effects of their relationship, the café staff became dedicated to the use of rats as caregivers.

“Although rats and cats have adversarial relationships outside the terrarium – inside the kittens are the perfect size to have supervised romp and play sessions with the kittens,” says the café’s website. “Because the rats are not scared of the kittens, they don’t run away and the cats don’t hunt them. However, the kittens are convinced that the rat tails are there primarily for them to play with. Remy and Emile are ok with that so long as the kittens play gently with their tails.”

While Fishing, 11-yo Boy Reels in a Purse Lost 25 Years Ago… and Returns it to Owner

25 years after it disappeared, a long lost purse has resurfaced at the end of a boy’s fishing rod—and its owner was shocked to be reunited with it after an 11-year-old boy did the right thing.

Brodie Brocks was fishing at Lake Hartwell in Anderson, South Carolina when he reeled in a waterlogged purse.

Surprisingly, everything inside was intact: makeup, baby photos, credit cards, and even a high school diploma  — all inside a pocketbook with the owner’s name printed inside.

What was even more incredible was how Brocks’s relatives recognized the name in the pocketbook as their family friend April Bolt.

When Bolt was told that they had discovered her purse, she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

The purse had disappeared off of a boat that Bolt had boarded during a family cookout in 1992. Bolt assumed that it had been stolen – but she was even more happy to find that everything was still in relatively good shape.

Ex-prisoner En Route to Job Interview Takes Shirt Off Back to Save Man’s Life

Aaron Tucker was giddy with excitement when he landed a job interview for a bus boy position – but he never made it to the interview.

That’s because he ditched the bus on the way to the restaurant so he could save the life of an injured man.

Tucker has been attempting to find employment since he was released from a 22-month stint in prison over a weapons charge. The ex-convict, who is currently living in a halfway house, wants to use his future income to provide for his almost 2-year-old son.

So when he got a call for an interview at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que in Stamford, Connecticut, the father was beside himself with excitement.

When he was on his way to the restaurant, however, he saw a smoking overturned car in the middle of the road.

Alarmed by the sight, Tucker asked the bus driver if he was going to stop – and the driver said no. When Tucker asked if the driver would wait for him while he checked on the man in the overturned car, the bus driver also said no.

Ignoring the fact that he would miss his interview, Tucker jumped off the vehicle and ran over to the smoking car. Inside, was a 61-year-old man who was bleeding from the head.

With the help of a few other pedestrians, Tucker pulled the man from the wreckage and used the crisp, clean shirt he had been given for the interview to tie a tourniquet around the stranger’s head. The Good Samaritan then waited until an ambulance arrived to transport the man to safety.

While Tucker obviously didn’t land the bus boy job, he has since received three other job offers in Westport. A GoFundMe campaign created by the community has also raised almost $14,000 in recognition of the man’s compassion.

Colorado Joins Paris Climate Agreement

Colorado has just joined the ranks of American states determined to meet the climate goals set by the Paris Agreement in 2015.

Gov. John Hickenlooper signed an executive order on Tuesday stating that Colorado will be attempting to meet the treaty’s expectations by cutting greenhouse gas emissions to 26% below what they were in 2005. State representatives hope to meet meet this goal before 2025.

The announcement comes as a follow-up to the Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the international treaty last month. While withdrawing from the process could take several years to complete, hundreds of U.S. cities have already declared their support of the Paris Accord, regardless of the president’s position. Hawaii became the first U.S. state to declare their independent support of the treaty.

Additionally, the U.S. Climate and Health Alliance has already been supported by dozens of prominent state organizations and health practitioners intent on meeting the treaty’s goals.

Colorado plans on supporting the sustainable infrastructure by shifting their dependency on coal towards the soaring wind and solar markets. Representatives also plan on collaborating with Utah and Nevada in order to install more charging stations for electric cars.

“We will realize our commitment with colleagues in the West to build electric vehicle stations along major highway corridors throughout our state, along with Utah and Nevada, we will utilize the Volkswagen Mitigation Trust to reduce range anxiety within the electric vehicle market,” said Hickenlooper after his signing. “You’ll be able to drive an electric car from Colorado to the Pacific and Denver to Moffat County without fear.”

Watch Students Thank Their Professor By Surprising Him With His Own Muppet

If Sesame Street has taught us anything over the years, it’s that you should always be kind to others and appreciate your friends.

And that’s exactly what these students did in recognition of their Harvard professor’s outstanding work in children’s education.

Professor Joe Blatt has spent a large portion of his career with the Ivy League school working with the Sesame Workshop: the “Sesame Street”-based nonprofit dedicated to helping children learn and grow.

As a thank you for his inspiring work, his students at the Harvard Graduate School of Education reached out to Sesame Workshop CEO Jeffrey Dunn and commissioned the creation of a Muppet in Blatt’s likeness.

And the results are truly uncanny.

The students presented the replica to Blatt in a ceremony at the end of June – and Blatt’s delight over the thoughtful gift is evident.

“I’ll try to find some powerful and motivating way to use it in classes,” Blatt told the Boston Globe. “I’m also thinking seriously about never going to another faculty meeting and just propping this up in a chair so they think I’m there.”

When Dog Rescuer’s Car Breaks Down, Cop Lends His Own to Pick Up Pups

A dog rescuer and her husband were stranded without transportation on Fourth of July weekend – but when this compassionate cop heard about their mission, he didn’t even hesitate to hand them the keys to his own car.

Molly Nemec and other animal rescuers have spent the last six weeks organizing the transportation of several dogs who were destined for the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China.

Earlier this month, the pups were flown into Chicago’s O’Hare airport. Nemec, who lives in Lindstrom, Minnesota, planned on meeting with her cohorts halfway in between her home and Chicago in order to pass off the dogs, who would then be distributed to their prepared foster parents in Minnesota.

However, Nemec hit a pretty serious snag.

While on the way to the meet-up point, Nemec’s SUV overheated and broke down in Stillwater, Minnesota.

Because it was a holiday weekend, there were no rental SUVs available in the area, and they needed a car that was big enough to fit six dog kennels. Distraught, the rescuers realized that they had no way of getting to the checkpoint.

Then, 47-year-old Officer Brad Junker of the Stillwater Police Department arrived on the scene to check up on the stranded couple.

“They saw the empty kennels, dog bowls and such as they stepped out to talk with us. They learned of our mission to meet halfway in Wisconsin to pick up 6 very special critters. We talked to them about the dog & cat meat trade…” said Nemec. “Then one of the kind-hearted officers said: ‘I will let you use my Suburban to drive down to get these dogs.’”

Nemec was so shocked by the offer, she asked if he could repeat himself.

When he reiterated the statement, Nemec couldn’t help but break down in tears.

“I could not believe the kindness and generosity of this police officer who had never met us before! Sure enough, within 8 minutes he was back with his Suburban and helped us pack it up in no time so we could take off.”

“I don’t know; it just seemed like the thing to do,” Junker told the Twin Cities Pioneer Press. “I said, ‘Why don’t you just take my vehicle? I have to work for another four or five hours. I won’t be using it. It’s just sitting in the parking lot, so why don’t you just use it?’”

Thanks to the help of Junker, Nemec’s mission was a success – all six pups were picked up in Wisconsin and dropped off with their foster parents.

“Thankfully, in the evening we got the dogs back to Stillwater where all the fabulous fosters were set to meet us (albeit later than we had hoped),” says Nemec. “To make the night even better, the police officer joined us since his shift was over and was able to see this transport come full circle and meet these precious pups! What an amazing day.”

60 Schools Are Installing Washers and Dryers For Homeless and Troubled Students

Thousands of American students are less likely to attend school if they don’t have access to clean clothes – which is why this company is installing dozens of washing machines and dryers in schools across the country.

Appliance manufacturing company Whirlpool is donating the machines in order to give struggling students the ability to properly do their laundry.

The Whirlpool Care Counts laundry program’s pilot study showed that 90% of tracked students were more likely to attend class if they had clean clothes. Since the data was published by the company, they have been inundated with over 900 applications for the program nationwide.

In the coming school year, the program will be partnering with Teach For America to install washers and dryers in 60 new U.S. schools. Currently, the program only operates out of Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read on grade level by the third grade, and by high school, attendance is a better dropout indicator than test scores.

East High School in Utah reportedly has 80 homeless students out of 2,000. The students are either living in shelters, on the streets, or staying at friend’s houses. Since the school installed washing machines and dryers, they have proved invaluable to the homeless teens, as well as students whose families are too dysfunctional to own working laundry appliances.

“We know that several barriers prevent many underserved students from coming to school every day, whether it be lack of transportation or lack of access to clean clothes,” said a school representative from Georgia. “The stigma associated with this can cause long term effects on children, in many instances leading to them missing significant amounts of school.”

“We work hard to boost scholars’ confidence through academics and social/emotional work, and having clean uniforms will dramatically increase student confidence in order to approach the academic day with minimal challenges,” added another representative.

Elephant Stranded 5 Miles Out to Sea Rescued by Navy

This elephant was struggling to keep its trunk above water when he was found by local Navy officers.

The elephant, which conservationists say was most likely washed out to sea while trying to cross the Kokkilai lagoon, was spotted by the Sri Lanka’s navy five miles out at sea.

Wildlife specialists and divers tied ropes around the creature’s body so they could tow it back to the northeastern shore.

Build it and They Will Come: Iowa Man Recreates Wimbledon, Travelers Come to Play Free Tennis

Mark Kuhn has always had a fixation on the fabulous sport of tennis.

He loves tennis so much, in fact, he built a replica of the Wimbledon tennis arena on his farm in Charles City, Iowa.

The replica took over a year to build on top of his family farm’s cattle feed lot. After Kuhn learned how to care for the court through an internship with the Wimbledon ground staff, the farmer opened it to the public.

The center court replica, which has fondly been called the All Iowa Lawn Tennis Club, attracts travelers from all over the country. Kuhn says that he has had amateur and professional tennis players visit from 42 different U.S. states.

Kuhn doesn’t charge any money for the visiting players, but visitors are required to have a reservation if they want to use the court.

Rescue Pup Melts Hearts by Sharing its Good Fortune With Homeless Dog

Lana the rescue dog may have a loving home to call her own, but she hasn’t forgotten what it’s like to live on the streets.

So when she saw a nearby homeless pup outside of her family’s home in Brazil, she decided to share her wealth with the foreign hound.

Lana’s owner Suelen Schaumloeffel says that it has recently been rather chilly in the area, and Lana had been tucked into her dog house with a toasty blanket the night before. Instead of staying warm and cozy inside the dog house, however, she dragged the blanket over to the fence so the stray pup could sleep on it from the other side.

When her fiancé left to go to work last Tuesday morning, they couldn’t help but melt over the sweet exchange.

“I thought, ‘How beautiful what she did for her friend,’” Schaumloeffel told The Dodo. “My best four-legged friend reminded me of something so important: generosity!”

The stray has reportedly appeared in the area more than once, but he has been too skittish for Schaumloeffel to approach him. Schaumloeffel has instead taken to leaving out bowls of food in case he needs a snack.

NBA Team Hosts Tinder Night and Then Pays for Love Birds’ Wedding

This lovely couple is preparing to say “I do” – and it’s all thanks to the basketball team who hosted them two years ago.

Avery Armstrong and Ben McClesky met at a Hawks-hosted event called “Swipe Right Night” at the Phillips Arena of Atlanta, Georgia in 2015.

The themed event, which is only unique to the Hawks, allows fans to use the Tinder app inside the arena and gain access to special perks and meet up with matches in real time.

After Armstrong and McClesky swiped right, the couple continued to date. They were spotted several times at the Phillips Arena for playoffs and concerts following the original Tinder date night.

More notably, they returned for Tinder Night 2.0 where they met with Hawks CEO Steve Koonin.

Koonin was so excited over the Hawks’ involvement with their relationship, he offered to pay for their wedding – assuming they ever got married. “My treat”, said the CEO.

Two years after the fateful Tinder event, Armstrong reached out to Koonin and asked if he was serious about the offer. Armstrong and McClesky, who recently had a baby, said they’re finally ready to tie the knot.

“Avery and Ben: We are super excited for how your relationship has grown since you met at our first Swipe Right Night, and I will absolutely make good on my promise for the Hawks to host your wedding,” wrote Koonin. “We can’t wait to start making plans and meet your new little one.”

Man Flies Drone Above Legendary Water Drain and Captures Stunning Footage

While Californians might be familiar with this strange gaping hole in the waterway, it is consistently a bamboozling sight to behold for visitors.

The “Glory Hole” spillway of Lake Berryessa is tucked into the Vaca Mountains of Napa County, California. Measuring 76 feet across (23 meters), the spillway has been bone dry for several years due to drought.

Thanks to record-breaking winter snows, however, the 6-year dry spell has brought back the legendary water drain.

YouTube user Evan K flew a drone over the spillway in order to capture footage of the Glory Hole from the sky; and its swirling pattern is even more hypnotizing from a bird’s eye view.

Do You Live in One of the 50 U.S. Counties That Have Ended Veteran Homelessness?

While homelessness is still a pressing problem in the United States, there is light on the horizon: 50 American counties and states have successfully ended veteran homelessness.

The milestone was announced yesterday when Will County – a region in northeastern Illinois – declared that they had joined the elite ranks of American communities that have ended veteran homelessness.

Through several partnerships and care programs adopting the “housing first” initiative, 56 homeless veterans were given permanent housing in 2016. In 2017, 45 other vets were given housing.

“I am proud of the collaborative effort in Will County that is working towards ending homelessness for all of our veterans,” said Will County Executive Larry Walsh. “These veterans have made large sacrifices to protect our freedom and our nation. The very least we can do is assist them in finding permanent housing.”

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, 47 counties and 3 states are among the communities to have ended veteran homelessness. The three states include Connecticut, Virginia, and Delaware. The 47 counties that have achieved success are divided amongst 26 states, leaving 24 without signs of respective progress.

New York and Florida host the most amount of communities that have ended veteran homelessness without achieving state-wide elimination – but the proximity of completion may vary for each state, depending on the population.

Jimmy Carter’s New Solar Farm Will Power Half His City

Though former United States President Jimmy Carter is 92 years old, he is still paving the way for a brighter future.

Mr. Carter, who ascended to the presidency 40 years ago, leased out 10 acres of his property in Plains, Georgia in February to be used as a solar farm for the city.

According to SolAmerica (the renewable energy company that engineered and installed the single-axis tracker solar array), the panels will generate over 55 million kilowatt hours of clean energy over the course of the next 25 years.

Over the course of a 25-year purchase agreement with Georgia Power, the solar farm will supply about 50% of the town’s power – which is roughly the equivalent of burning 3,600 tons of coal per year.

“Distributed, clean energy generation is critical to meeting growing energy needs around the world while fighting the effects of climate change,” said Carter in a statement. “I am encouraged by the tremendous progress that solar and other clean energy solutions have made in recent years and expect those trends to continue.”

During his term in office, Carter created the Department of Energy and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), and signed the Public Utility Regulatory Act (PURPA), all catalysts for the advancement of renewable energy in the U.S. Carter was also the first president to put solar panels on the White House.

This family hadn’t heard the voice of their beloved father in over 20 years – until now.

Guisto Patinella was a loving father who passed away in 1994 after a battle with cancer. His two children, Gina and David, have dozens of photos of their father, but no audio or video.

So when David became set to get married earlier this year, Gina started contemplating what she could give her brother as a wedding gift.

There had been a family legend for several decades about how their father had done an Allstate commercial in 1971. Because the commercial didn’t run for very long, no one had ever seen it.

But then, Gina sent an email to All State asking if they had any way of digging up the commercial from their records.

Despite it being almost 50 years old, the company finally found a long lost copy of the ad.

On the eve of David’s wedding, Gina plays the ad in front of the wedding guests – and there is not a dry eye in the room.

“I just can’t believe that so many people went through all of this just to make this happen,” says a tearful David. “I’m gonna watch it a million times. I love it … it’s the best present ever.”

80 Beachgoers Form Human Chain to Save Family Being Dragged Out to Sea By RipTide

This dramatic beach rescue proves that anyone can be hero.

Over 80 pedestrians on the Panama City Beach in Florida formed a human chain to save a family of nine from a dangerous riptide.

Events began to unfold on Saturday evening when Roberta Ursrey and her husband saw their two young sons screaming for help from 100 yards out into the ocean. A nearby couple attempted to rescue the boys, but they also became caught in the current.

Several of the other Ursrey family members attempted to rescue the struggling swimmers, and they became trapped as well.

One nearby surfer was able to tow one of the women to shore by using his surfboard, but there were still nine others in need of rescue: six of the Ursreys, an unnamed married couple, and another female tourist.

There was no lifeguard on duty, and police had opted to wait for a rescue boat – but the situation was getting more dire by the second. The riptide victims had already been struggling to keep their heads above water for twenty minutes, and they were exhausted.

Beach goers started yelling at the crowd of onlookers to form a human chain. Dozens of people – several of which reportedly said they couldn’t even swim themselves – linked arms and marched into the ocean. Among the onlookers was Jessica Mae Simmons, whose husband told the crowd to form a chain.

“To see people from different races and genders come into action to help TOTAL strangers is absolutely amazing to see!!” wrote Simmons. “People who didn’t even know each other went HAND IN HAND IN A LINE, into the water to try and reach them.”

As she watched the 80-person chain stretch towards the swimmers, she knew that she could help.

“I have always been a GREAT swimmer,” Simmons wrote on Facebook. “I was raised in a pool and a lake since I was crawling, so water was no hard task for me. I can hold my breathe underwater and go around a Olympic pool with ease! I knew I could get them to the human chain of people that wanted to help.”

Simmons and her husband then grabbed boogie boards and swam down the chain until she reached the swimmers. First, they helped the two young boys reach the human chain. Then, they went back for Roberta, who was just starting to black out by the time she was rescued. Next, they rescued Roberta’s mother who had begun to have a heart attack while in the water.

Even though the grandmother reportedly yelled for the rescuers to “save themselves”, Roberta’s nephew and husband supported her in the water until help returned.

Finally, after everyone was brought back to the beach, the crowd began to cheer.

Roberta and her mother were taken to the hospital where they were treated for their injuries. They have since been deemed stable and relatively healthy.

Jessica says that while she was hailed as a hero and thanked by everyone in the family, she credits the rescue to everyone else on the beach.

“I was calm because I KNEW they was coming out alive. I knew how to get out of a rip tide and I knew I could swim for long periods of time. But what really got me was how a entire BEACH jumped into action to save these people. People who COULDN’T even swim was part of that human chain. They wanted to help that bad.”

This businessman may only be 15 years old, but he has become an icon of industry at his school.

Nathan John-Baptiste is a London student who made a living for himself by selling candy and soda out of the boy’s bathroom at his school. What started as a project that made him a quick buck on the side turned into a fully-fledged business that spanned across three schools.

The “Wolf of Walthamstow”, as he is fondly called, sold all of his products to his peers at a discounted rate. A candy bar that would normally cost roughly a dollar was sold for half the price at Nathan’s “store”: the Walking Talking Shop.

Nathan would publish a menu of the sweets and their respective prices on Snapchat every day. Then, after taking orders from students, he would sell the goods during the lunch hour.

By recruiting eleven of his friends as “employees”, Nathan started raking in $300 per day – roughly $56,000 per year. Though the Wolf is young, he has mature tastes: Nathan has reportedly treated himself to dozens of fitted suits and fancy dinners out on the town.

Unfortunately, the school caught wind of his business and told him to shut down the operation. Rather than mourning the loss of his income, Nathan says that he already has several thousand dollars stashed away for his next venture.

“I can’t sell sweets for the rest of my life,” he told the Daily Mail. “I would like to become a stock broker – that’s one place where I want to put my money – and in property, 100 per cent. The plan is to become a millionaire. It’s just about the hard work.”

While Nathan’s mother is extremely proud of her son’s entrepreneurial spirit, she says that she is mostly just happy that he’s not using that drive to sell drugs instead.
