Survey Shows What Americans Were Most Happy For in 2016: The Cubs, and End to the Election

cubs-win-world-series-mlb-youtube

An ugly U.S. election dominated the news for an entire year, and 2016 has been called the “worst year ever” by many pundits. Despite that, a poll of 1,005 Americans conducted by Ipsos showed that 70% of Americans still considered themselves to be happy in 2016.

When asked to name their happiest moments from 2016, “The election is over” was the clear-cut answer, according to a survey commissioned by the creators of DieHappy, an app that helps people plan and share reunions and celebrations.

Other highlights of the year for Americans included the breakthrough in ALS disease research, the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series and the advent of Pokémon Go.

Happiness, though, was most greatly influenced by spending time with family and friends. When asked what personally made them happiest in 2016, a majority (53%) chose that answer when given a list of six options – more than three times the second-place answer of improving their financial position (15%)

To bring themselves more happiness in the New Year, 36% of people hoped for a better financial position, and 22% wanted to strive for better physical fitness.

“It continues to be so interesting that even though most of us realize that our friends and family brought us the most happiness as we look backwards, we too often still fixate on monetary items that we think might bring us more happiness in the future,” said Shawn Boyer, creator of DieHappy and the 2008 U.S. Small Business Administration National Small Business Person of the Year. “Thankfully, as we get older, it becomes more and more clear that our relationships are what really matter.”

‘Friendship Benches’ Alleviate Mental Illness Symptoms For Thousands

friendship-bench-grand-challenges-canadazapp

Their office hours are spent on simple wooden seats, called Friendship Benches, on the grounds of mental health clinics around Harare and other major cities in Zimbabwe.

The practitioners are ordinary citizens—lay health workers known as community “Grandmothers”— trained to listen and offer support to patients living with anxiety, depression and other common mental disorders.

Their impact, though, measured in a ground-breaking study, is far from ordinary–and tens of thousands of people have already benefitted. The innovative approach holds the potential to significantly improve the lives of millions of people with moderate and severe mental health problems in countries where access to treatment is limited or nonexistent.

RELATEDSimple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

Six months after undergoing six weekly “problem solving therapy” sessions on the Friendship Benches, participants showed significant differences in severity of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts based on locally validated questionnaires for depression and anxiety: the Shona Symptom Questionnaire (SSQ), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD). The results were striking.

Patients with depression or anxiety who received problem-solving therapy through the Friendship Bench were more than three times less likely to have symptoms of depression after six months, compared to patients who received standard care. They were also four times less likely to have anxiety symptoms and five times less likely to have suicidal thoughts than the control group after follow-up.

CHECK OUTNew Drug Inspires Hope For Alzheimer’s Cure

50% of patients who received standard care still had symptoms of depression compared to 14% who received Friendship Bench (based on PHQ). 48% of patients who received standard care still had symptoms of anxiety compared to 12% who received Friendship Bench (based on the GAD), and 12% of patients who received standard care still had suicidal thoughts compared to 2% who received Friendship Bench (based on SSQ).

The Friendship Bench intervention was also shown to be well suited to improve health outcomes among highly vulnerable individuals. 86% of the study’s participants were women, over 40% were HIV positive, and 70% had experienced domestic violence or physical illness.

Lead author of the study Dr. Dixon Chibanda, a consultant psychiatrist in Harare, co-founded the Friendship Bench network in response to the appalling shortage of evidence-based treatment for people with mental disorders in Zimbabwe, a problem common throughout Africa.

MOREPresident of Gambia Bans Female Genital Mutilation

While about 25% of the country’s primary care patients suffer from depression, anxiety and other common mental disorders, Zimbabwe (population 15 million) has only 10 psychiatrists and 15 clinical psychologists.

“Common mental disorders impose a huge burden on all countries of sub-Saharan Africa,” says Dr. Chibanda. “Developed over 20 years of community research, the Friendship Bench empowers people to achieve a greater sense of coping and control over their lives by teaching them a structured way to identify problems and find workable solutions.”

To date, over 27,500 people have accessed treatment.

“In developing countries, nearly 90 percent of people with mental disorders are unable to access any treatment,” says Dr. Peter A. Singer, Chief Executive Officer of Grand Challenges Canada. “We need innovations like the Friendship Bench to flip the gap and go from 10% of people receiving treatment, to 90% of people receiving treatment.”

In 2017, the team will focus on expanding the model to reach other vulnerable populations, including youth and refugees. In partnership with the Swedish NGO SolidarMed, the team intends to expand implementation of this model in Masvingo province and subsequently in the refugee centers of the eastern highlands on the border with Mozambique.

Angela McElhiney was riddled with grief after her 15-year-old son Nathan committed suicide in October, but when she recently reached out on the Reddit website for help, dozens of strangers answered her call.

The mother’s most prized possession is a video of her son singing “Wayfaring Stranger”, a song about someone’s ascension into heaven. Unfortunately, the clip’s audio is polluted with the sounds of shuffling feet and people coughing.

Angela posted the video on Reddit hoping for tips on clearing up the audio or references to companies that could do it for a fee. Instead, users flooded her inbox with comfort by submitting their own remixes of the song with cleaner tracks.

Nation Finally Gives Back Freedom of Press and Lifts Newspaper Ban

newspapers-cc-jon-s

One of Kashmir’s most popular English-daily newspaper has been allowed to resume publication after it was banned in October for “inciting civil unrest”.

The Kashmir Reader has been exhibiting critical, hard-hitting journalism since 2012. When government officials banned the paper’s printing almost three months ago, civil rights activists called it an “attack on the freedom of the press”.

The Kashmiri news agents breathed a deep sigh of relief when a statement was released on Monday saying that the ban was no longer necessary.

“I feel like we have been released from jail,” the daily’s editor, Hilal Mir, told the BBC. “It’s like being born again. The ban period was tough, but my staff stood by me. I am glad that the government has lifted an unjust ban.”

The return of their journalist integrity was highlighted in a segment published alongside their first issue since October.

“We at Kashmir Reader once again commit ourselves to continue trying to make sense of this historic phase for our readers, taking into account what many might have missed out on,” read the article, according to the Hindustan Times. “We will continue to be a space for nurturing a sharp discourse, reflection and commentary on what concerns the average Kashmiri in the most comprehensive manner possible, within the intellectual resources available from the entire spectrum of perspectives and opinion.”

Heroic Man Punches a Cougar in the Face to Protect Dogs

will-gibb-youtube

Will Gibb didn’t know what creature was attacking his dog  – all he knew was that he had to fight it off.

The 31-year-old was meeting a friend for coffee at a Tim Horton’s in Red Deer, Alberta when he let his two dogs Sasha and Mongo go for a short run around the parking lot.

Soon after he turned his pups loose, however, he heard a heart-stopping yelp of pain coming from Sasha.

Will didn’t waste a second, bolting to rescue his beloved pet. Even though he couldn’t make out what was biting onto his canine’s neck, he delivered a punch to the animal’s head so that it would release its grip on Sasha.

Only when the predator backed off did he discover that it was a cougar.

A vicious fist fight evolved between the wildcat, the pups, and Will. Sasha accidentally bit Will’s hand out of panic while he simultaneously fended the cougar off with his opposite fist. Though Mongo was attempting to join the fray, the hero stood between the two animals for fear of more injuries.

“I could see the cougar going for him, so I got between him and the cougar and started swinging and screaming at it, and called for my brother and friend to come give a hand,” Gibb told CBC. “And then I reached down for the closest, biggest stick that I could find and I ran back into the trees to go fight the cougar.”

That’s what we call some pawesome bravery.

U.S. Housing Market Has Regained All Value Lost During Housing Crisis

The total value of the U.S. housing stock grew to a record-high $29.6 trillion in 2016, according to new analysis. The housing market saw a strong year of appreciation, growing 5.7 percent in value, or $1.6 trillion.

The cumulative value of all homes in the U.S. had declined by $6.4 trillion beginning in 2006 as the housing market collapsed.

A home is typically the biggest part of an individual or family’s wealth, and the cumulative value of the U.S. residential housing stock is similarly significant to the national economy. The U.S. GDP is an estimated $18.7 trillion, nearly $10 trillion less than the value of all homes in the country.

China Announces Ban on Ivory Trade by End of 2017

elephant-CC jbpic

Following an agreement made with the United States in September 2015, the Chinese government will finally begin phasing out ivory trade until a complete ban is initiated by the end of 2017.

The ban’s deadline and details were announced at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in October. As China is the largest market for legal and illegal ivory in the world, with as much as an estimated 70% of ivory worldwide ending up in the country, this ban on all exports and imports has the potential to save tens of thousands of elephants from poachers every year.

RELATEDCalifornia Bans Use of Harmful Devices Against Captive Elephants

The government will start by bringing a halt to commercial processing and sale of ivory by March 31st, followed by registered traders.

The landmark decision is greatly welcomed by the nation’s citizens as well – a new study by wildlife group Save the Elephants shows public opinion in China has swung wildly against the ivory trade since 2012 when less than half of the population thought it posed a problem. Today, more than 71% oppose the trade.

That appears to be driving an 85% plummet in the number of Chinese ivory purchases since 2012, and the subsequent price cut from $4,600 a pound to $2,400.

Uber Driver Saves Teen From Sex Trafficking Ring

keith-avila-youtube

What started out as a normal Uber driving shift for Keith Avila turned into an incredible rescue of a 16-year-old girl from a child sex trafficking ring.

Keith was working on Monday night in Sacramento, California when he picked up two women and a young girl. While driving them to a Holiday Inn, he started hearing the adults openly instruct the teen on how to interact with “John” at the hotel. Their instructions reportedly included telling her to “pat him down for weapons while hugging him” and “get the donation from him” before anything happened.

Keith, being the smart man that he is, dropped the women off, drove around the corner, and called the cops.

Police officers arrived at the scene in minutes, arresting the two pimps – Destiny Pettway and Maria Westley – and the man that they were meeting. The teen was apparently a runaway who was then rescued and taken into temporary housing while law enforcement located her family.

“The worst thing I thought would happen when driving Uber is that I would be getting drunk passengers and I would have to handle them,” Avila told NBC Latino. “All my life, I thought about people throwing up in the car as the worst scenario.”

A member of the Uber Safety Team called to thank and congratulate Avila later that week, but he said there was no way he could have done nothing – he was just doing the right thing.

U.S. Citizens Are Protecting Twice as Much Land as the National Parks

Death Valley Superbloom FB National Park Service

Death Valley Superbloom FB National Park Service

The United States prides itself on the beauty and expanse of our national parks – but although thousands of acres of precious American wilderness are protected by the National Park Service, a new census shows that private citizens are protecting twice as much land.

Over 58 million acres of land in the lower 48 states are owned by state, local, and national land trusts, which is 9 million more than 2010, according to the Land Trust Alliance. Land trusts are powers that are held by nonprofit organizations and governments that agree to help manage and conserve property through a conservation easement. Conservation easements can be managed by the landowner to allow certain privileges with his or her land, such as allowing it to be open to the public or protecting certain aspects of the land.

MORECanada Celebrates 150th Birthday, Makes National Parks Free All Year Long

The easements also ensure that the lands are protected during future generations, no matter who purchases or inherits the property.

Despite land trusts putting their focus on conserving important wildlife habitats, water quality, and working farms, the precious protected areas have also provided valuable recreational activities that might usually only be enjoyed at national parks.

Over 6.2 million visitors were allowed access to the lands to enjoy scenic vistas, hiking, fishing, and biking since 2015.

“Land trusts are in a position to address many of society’s ills,” says Andrew Bowman, president of the Land Trust Alliance, in a statement concerning the census. “How do we stem a national health crisis and provide opportunities for people to exercise and recreate? Land is the answer. How do we secure local, healthy and sustainable food? Land is the answer. And land even has a role to play in mitigating climate change.”

Man Impressed With Injured Teen’s Work Ethic Raises Thousands

This chance encounter between a customer and cashier led to thousands of dollars being raised for charity and a teen in need.

Cameron Nelson went inside a Chick-Fil-A restaurant in Avon, Indiana on December 8th to order a meal. He was bewildered, however, by the young teen behind the counter working in a neck brace and sling.

“We sneeze too hard and decide to call in, but he’s working like nothing’s wrong,” Cameron wrote on Facebook. “I asked him what happened – he said he was involved in a car accident, but he was working cause he needs the money and also wants to feed the homeless for Christmas.”

“I was amazed he was still working despite his condition,” he added.

Jakeem’s father, Tracy Tyler, was informed about the fundraiser two days after its creation – and he was amazed.

“I have only allowed the funds to remain in the account expecting the outpouring to die down, but the love you all have continued to send to my son is amazing,” wrote Tracy. “I intend to use all my parenting skills and guidance to help Jakeem lived up to the potential that I have always seen, and now the rest of the world has seen.”

Heroic Momma Hiked 26 Miles Through Heavy Snow to Save Husband, Son

karen-kline-youtube

After hiking 26 miles over the course of 30 hours through heavy snow and ice, Karen Klein is being hailed as one tough momma.

The 46-year-old triathlete, her husband Eric, and her son Isaac were driving through the Grand Canyon National Park on a family Christmas vacation towards Las Vegas when a blizzard suddenly struck the surrounding area. The family’s GPS kept leading the car down national park roads until the vehicle became stuck in the snow close to the North Rim.

Karen, who had taken survival courses at their home in Pennsylvania was confident in her abilities to handle the elements. She took what little supplies they had and headed out towards the main road in search of help – or at the very least, a cell phone signal to call for help.

MOREUphill Battle With Cancer Leads Man to Climb Tallest Peaks–with One Lung

She had already hiked 10 miles when she reached the highway – the signs, however, said that the road was closed due to the snow. More signs indicated that the park entrance was 14 more miles away.

Karen continued on, surviving only by eating pine twigs and drinking her own urine, since hydrating with snow can quickly trigger hypothermia.

The mother eventually found a cabin where she was able to rest from exhaustion.

Meanwhile, Eric Klein became worried over his wife’s absence and went out on his own to find cell reception. When he finally found a signal, he gave rescue workers their location and the family was evacuated to a hospital on Friday. The family is in good health despite some frostbite in their appendages.

Survival specialists usually recommend staying sheltered in the case of being stranded, however the Klein’s were in much more danger due to the blizzard’s hazardous conditions.

“I kept thinking ‘this is not the way I’m going to go’” Karen told NBC. “I can’t leave my son without a mom. I can’t leave my husband without a wife. I’m not letting my parents bury me. I just won’t”

The “20% time” is a benefit that allows the tech titan’s employees to use 20% of their time on projects outside of their main focus. Rio Akasaka, a product manager on Google Drive, has used that benefit over the course of the last year in order to develop the new mapping tool.

Since nearly one in eight Americans are reportedly living with some kind of mobility-related disability, Akasaka recognizes the need to create a more accessible navigation platform for everyone.

By American law, all public and commercial properties must be properly modified to accommodate those with disabilities – other nations, on the other hand, might not have the same policy.

Milestone: We Just Published Our 18,000th Good News Story!

geri-and-mckinley-christmas

Do you see that halo above our heads?

The team at Good News Network has just published an article that brings the total number of positive news stories to 18,000!

For 19 years, since the website first launched in 1997, I have worked to gather all the good news from around the globe and put it together in one place.

Thank you for your support.  Without our millions of fans like you, I could not have hired freelance writers – or kept my chin up, through troubles and trials.

We try every day to keep our advertisements non-intrusive and quiet, which is nearly impossible these days, with technology such as it is. But still, we toil to do our best.

From the days when I worked at CNN and other news outlets in Washington, DC, I have dreamed of building something that would serve good news to anyone who needed it – so important, especially now.

We love our work, and hope you appreciate it too. You can help us continue our mission by reporting bad ads to us, by submitting your own positive news, or by giving money – contributing as little as $2.00 – to become a member.
