annis-lindkvist-and-jimmy-fraser-released

This formerly homeless man who was begging in Edinburgh was given a home for Christmas thanks to two kind-hearted tourists who had gotten lost in the city.

Annis Lindkvist and her sister Emma were traveling through Scotland before returning home to Sagmyra, Sweden for Christmas. After asking Jimmy Fraser for directions, the three struck up a conversation, became friends, and exchanged numbers.

They were so touched by Jimmy’s personality, that when they heard he would be spending Christmas alone, they offered to renew his passport and fly him back to Sweden with them so he could spend the yuletide festivities with their family.

The household ironing board has not been redesigned since its invention in 1892 – until now.

The Flippr is a crowdfunded ironing board that has been modified and streamlined for easier use. The design claims to cut the average ironing time from eight minutes to two minutes by using several features such as a torso-shaped board with 360 degree rotation and clothing clips for keeping pants in place.

All New York City Subway Stations Now Have Free Public Wifi

commuters-subway-Flickr-TheeErin

Starting on New Year’s Eve, all 279 New York City subway stations now have free Wifi.

Transit Wireless, the internet company responsible for the newly-accessible network, partnered with the Metropolitan Transit Authority in 2010 in order to provide internet for their annual 2.6 billion passengers.

If you’d like to connect to a network, simply enter a station and connect to TransitWirelessWiFi for one hour of free service as you travel from station to station. After the hour, simply sign in again for another hour of free service.

In 2011, six initial stations in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan were deployed with commercial 2G and 3G cellular and Wi-Fi services. This initial build was used as a successful baseline for the structure of the network. The network has enhanced connectivity for public safety, NYC Emergency Services, New York City Transit personnel and businesses while allowing the top wireless carriers globally to extend critical connectivity to their customers.

Though cellular service is currently limited, full coverage will reportedly be provided near the end of 2017.

Dog Spends Days Protecting Injured Pup From Passing Trains (WATCH)

snowy-dogs-facebook

A devoted guard dog was found last week keeping watch over a fallen canine companion who had injured herself on a set of snowy train tracks in western Ukraine.

Since their owners had reported them missing on Thursday, the loyal pup had reportedly spent two to three days protecting his friend by keeping her warm and ducking their heads every time a train went by.

The two were finally found on Christmas Day by Denis Malafeev who posted pictures of the striking friendship on Facebook. Although their rescue attempts took several tries due to the male’s viciousness in protecting his companion, she was eventually lifted off of the train tracks and taken to a veterinarian.

“He kept her warm for two days under the constant threat of danger!” wrote Malafeev. “I don’t know what to call it: instinct, love, friendship, attachment. I only know this: not every human is capable of this. We should all learn from it!”

The dogs, apparently named Panda and Lucy, were treated for their injuries and then returned to the original owners.

Mom Donates 2 Organs to Save Her Son: “This year is going to be your year”

sarah-and-joe-lamont-released

This adoring mother is wasting no time waiting on two different organs for her son – she’s simply going to donate both of them herself.

Joe Lamont was born with a rare condition known as autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease. Since he had to have both of his kidneys removed, he has had to go in for dialysis three times a week just to stay alive.

Then the 4-year-old came down with advanced liver disease, which apparently can be deadly without a transplant.

RELATEDHooters Waitress Gives Kidney to Customer She Barely Knew

After being on the transplant list for over a year without results, his devoted 36-year-old mother Sarah Lamont decided she would donate one of her own kidneys and part of her liver in order to save her son.

Sarah is set to undergo surgery for the liver transplant on January 25th at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Once mother and son are healed, Joe will receive Sarah’s kidney.

“I’ll be all right, I’m a very optimistic person. If I could do it today I would, the sooner the better,” Sarah told the Independent. “I said to him the other night ‘this is going to be your year Joe’ and he got excited and said to me ‘I’m getting a new liver and a new kidney!’.”

Teen Use of Drugs and Alcohol Reaches Exciting New Low

drugs-cc-gatis-gribusts

American Teenagers’ use of drugs, alcohol and tobacco declined significantly in 2016, to rates that are the lowest since the 1990s, a new national study showed.

The results derive from the annual Monitoring the Future study, now in its 42nd year. About 45,000 students in some 380 public and private secondary schools have been surveyed each year in this national study, designed and conducted by research scientists at U-M’s Institute for Social Research and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Students in grades 8, 10, and 12 are surveyed.

Overall, the proportion of secondary school students in the country who used any illicit drug in the prior year fell significantly between 2015 and 2016. The decline in narcotic drugs is of particular importance, the researchers say. This year’s improvements were particularly concentrated among 8th and 10th-graders.

MORESimple Blood Test Could Detect Cancer Ten Years Before Symptoms Show

Considerably fewer teens reported using any illicit drug other than marijuana in the prior 12 months — 5%, 10%, and 14% in grades 8, 10 and 12, respectively — than at any time since 1991. These rates reflect a decline of about one percentage point in each grade in 2016, but a much larger decline over the longer term.

In fact, the overall percentage of teens using any of the illicit drugs other than marijuana has been in a gradual, long-term decline since the last half of the 1990s, when their peak rates reached 13%, 18% and 21%, respectively.

Marijuana, the most widely used of the illicit drugs, dropped sharply in 2016 in use among 8th-graders to 9.4%, or about one in every 11 indicating any use in the prior 12 months. Use also declined among 10th-graders as well, though not by a statistically significant amount, to 24% or about one in every four 10th-graders.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

Daily or near-daily use of marijuana — defined as use on 20 or more occasions in the previous 30 days — also declined this year among the younger teens (significantly so in 8th grade to 0.7% and to 2.5% among 10th-graders).

Prescription amphetamines and other stimulants used without medical direction have constituted the second-most widely used class of illicit drugs used by teens. Their use has fallen considerably, however. In 2016, 3.5%, 6.1% and 6.7% of 8th-, 10th- and 12th-graders, respectively, say they have used any in the prior 12 months — down from recent peak levels of 9%, 12% and 11%, respectively, reached during the last half of the 1990s.

Prescription narcotic drugs have presented a serious problem for the country in recent years, with increasing numbers of overdose deaths and emergencies resulting from their use. Fortunately, the use of these drugs outside of medical supervision has been in decline, at least among high school seniors — the only ones for whom narcotics use is reported. In 2004, a high proportion of 12th-graders — 9.5%, or nearly one in 10 — indicated using a prescription narcotic in the prior 12 months, but today that percentage is down by half to 4.8%.

CHECK OUTFewer Babies Having Babies: U.S. Teen Birth Rate Cut in Half

“That’s still a lot of young people using these dangerous drugs without medical supervision, but the trending is in the right direction,” said Lloyd Johnston, the study’s principal investigator. “Fewer are risking overdosing as teenagers, and hopefully more will remain abstainers as they pass into their twenties, thereby reducing the number who become casualties in those high-risk years.”

A number of other illicit drugs have shown declining use, as well. Among them are cocaine, crack, sedatives and inhalants (the declining prevalence rates for these drugs may be seen in the tables and figures associated with this release.)

The use of alcohol by adolescents is even more prevalent than the use of marijuana, but it, too, is trending downward in 2016, continuing a longer-term decline. For all three grades, both annual and monthly prevalence of alcohol use are at historic lows over the life of the study. Both measures continued to decline in all three grades in 2016.

Of even greater importance, measures of heavy alcohol use are also down considerably, including self-reports of having been drunk in the previous 30 days and of binge drinking in the prior two weeks (defined as having five or more drinks in a row on at least one occasion).

MORENew Implantable Drug Could Ease Opioid Addiction

Binge drinking has fallen by half or more at each grade level since peak rates were reached at the end of the 1990s. Today, the proportions who binge drink are 3%, 10% and 16% in grades 8, 10 and 12, respectively.

“Since 2005, 12th-graders have also been asked about what we call ‘extreme binge drinking,’ defined as having 10 or more drinks in a row or even 15 or more, on at least one occasion in the prior two weeks,” Johnston said. “Fortunately, the prevalence of this particularly dangerous behavior has been declining as well.”

Declines in cigarette smoking and certain other forms of tobacco use also occurred among teens in 2016, continuing an important and now long-term trend in the use of cigarettes.

Survey Shows What Americans Were Most Happy For in 2016: The Cubs, and End to the Election

cubs-win-world-series-mlb-youtube

An ugly U.S. election dominated the news for an entire year, and 2016 has been called the “worst year ever” by many pundits. Despite that, a poll of 1,005 Americans conducted by Ipsos showed that 70% of Americans still considered themselves to be happy in 2016.

When asked to name their happiest moments from 2016, “The election is over” was the clear-cut answer, according to a survey commissioned by the creators of DieHappy, an app that helps people plan and share reunions and celebrations.

Other highlights of the year for Americans included the breakthrough in ALS disease research, the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series and the advent of Pokémon Go.

RELATED: The 15 Most Healthy And Happy Cities in The US Are…

Happiness, though, was most greatly influenced by spending time with family and friends. When asked what personally made them happiest in 2016, a majority (53%) chose that answer when given a list of six options – more than three times the second-place answer of improving their financial position (15%)

To bring themselves more happiness in the New Year, 36% of people hoped for a better financial position, and 22% wanted to strive for better physical fitness.

“It continues to be so interesting that even though most of us realize that our friends and family brought us the most happiness as we look backwards, we too often still fixate on monetary items that we think might bring us more happiness in the future,” said Shawn Boyer, creator of DieHappy and the 2008 U.S. Small Business Administration National Small Business Person of the Year. “Thankfully, as we get older, it becomes more and more clear that our relationships are what really matter.”

‘Friendship Benches’ Alleviate Mental Illness Symptoms For Thousands

friendship-bench-grand-challenges-canadazapp

Their office hours are spent on simple wooden seats, called Friendship Benches, on the grounds of mental health clinics around Harare and other major cities in Zimbabwe.

The practitioners are ordinary citizens—lay health workers known as community “Grandmothers”— trained to listen and offer support to patients living with anxiety, depression and other common mental disorders.

Their impact, though, measured in a ground-breaking study, is far from ordinary–and tens of thousands of people have already benefitted. The innovative approach holds the potential to significantly improve the lives of millions of people with moderate and severe mental health problems in countries where access to treatment is limited or nonexistent.

RELATEDSimple Checklist Leads to 82% Drop in Mental Health Patient Suicides

Six months after undergoing six weekly “problem solving therapy” sessions on the Friendship Benches, participants showed significant differences in severity of depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts based on locally validated questionnaires for depression and anxiety: the Shona Symptom Questionnaire (SSQ), the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD). The results were striking.

Patients with depression or anxiety who received problem-solving therapy through the Friendship Bench were more than three times less likely to have symptoms of depression after six months, compared to patients who received standard care. They were also four times less likely to have anxiety symptoms and five times less likely to have suicidal thoughts than the control group after follow-up.

CHECK OUTNew Drug Inspires Hope For Alzheimer’s Cure

50% of patients who received standard care still had symptoms of depression compared to 14% who received Friendship Bench (based on PHQ). 48% of patients who received standard care still had symptoms of anxiety compared to 12% who received Friendship Bench (based on the GAD), and 12% of patients who received standard care still had suicidal thoughts compared to 2% who received Friendship Bench (based on SSQ).

The Friendship Bench intervention was also shown to be well suited to improve health outcomes among highly vulnerable individuals. 86% of the study’s participants were women, over 40% were HIV positive, and 70% had experienced domestic violence or physical illness.

Lead author of the study Dr. Dixon Chibanda, a consultant psychiatrist in Harare, co-founded the Friendship Bench network in response to the appalling shortage of evidence-based treatment for people with mental disorders in Zimbabwe, a problem common throughout Africa.

MOREPresident of Gambia Bans Female Genital Mutilation

While about 25% of the country’s primary care patients suffer from depression, anxiety and other common mental disorders, Zimbabwe (population 15 million) has only 10 psychiatrists and 15 clinical psychologists.

“Common mental disorders impose a huge burden on all countries of sub-Saharan Africa,” says Dr. Chibanda. “Developed over 20 years of community research, the Friendship Bench empowers people to achieve a greater sense of coping and control over their lives by teaching them a structured way to identify problems and find workable solutions.”

To date, over 27,500 people have accessed treatment.

“In developing countries, nearly 90 percent of people with mental disorders are unable to access any treatment,” says Dr. Peter A. Singer, Chief Executive Officer of Grand Challenges Canada. “We need innovations like the Friendship Bench to flip the gap and go from 10% of people receiving treatment, to 90% of people receiving treatment.”

In 2017, the team will focus on expanding the model to reach other vulnerable populations, including youth and refugees. In partnership with the Swedish NGO SolidarMed, the team intends to expand implementation of this model in Masvingo province and subsequently in the refugee centers of the eastern highlands on the border with Mozambique.

One of Kashmir’s most popular English-daily newspaper has been allowed to resume publication after it was banned in October for “inciting civil unrest”.

The Kashmir Reader has been exhibiting critical, hard-hitting journalism since 2012. When government officials banned the paper’s printing almost three months ago, civil rights activists called it an “attack on the freedom of the press”.

The Kashmiri news agents breathed a deep sigh of relief when a statement was released on Monday saying that the ban was no longer necessary.

The return of their journalist integrity was highlighted in a segment published alongside their first issue since October.

“We at Kashmir Reader once again commit ourselves to continue trying to make sense of this historic phase for our readers, taking into account what many might have missed out on,” read the article, according to the Hindustan Times. “We will continue to be a space for nurturing a sharp discourse, reflection and commentary on what concerns the average Kashmiri in the most comprehensive manner possible, within the intellectual resources available from the entire spectrum of perspectives and opinion.”

Heroic Man Punches a Cougar in the Face to Protect Dogs

will-gibb-youtube

Will Gibb didn’t know what creature was attacking his dog  – all he knew was that he had to fight it off.

The 31-year-old was meeting a friend for coffee at a Tim Horton’s in Red Deer, Alberta when he let his two dogs Sasha and Mongo go for a short run around the parking lot.

Soon after he turned his pups loose, however, he heard a heart-stopping yelp of pain coming from Sasha.

Will didn’t waste a second, bolting to rescue his beloved pet. Even though he couldn’t make out what was biting onto his canine’s neck, he delivered a punch to the animal’s head so that it would release its grip on Sasha.

Only when the predator backed off did he discover that it was a cougar.

A vicious fist fight evolved between the wildcat, the pups, and Will. Sasha accidentally bit Will’s hand out of panic while he simultaneously fended the cougar off with his opposite fist. Though Mongo was attempting to join the fray, the hero stood between the two animals for fear of more injuries.

“I could see the cougar going for him, so I got between him and the cougar and started swinging and screaming at it, and called for my brother and friend to come give a hand,” Gibb told CBC. “And then I reached down for the closest, biggest stick that I could find and I ran back into the trees to go fight the cougar.”

That’s what we call some pawesome bravery.

U.S. Housing Market Has Regained All Value Lost During Housing Crisis

The total value of the U.S. housing stock grew to a record-high $29.6 trillion in 2016, according to new analysis. The housing market saw a strong year of appreciation, growing 5.7 percent in value, or $1.6 trillion.

The cumulative value of all homes in the U.S. had declined by $6.4 trillion beginning in 2006 as the housing market collapsed.

A home is typically the biggest part of an individual or family’s wealth, and the cumulative value of the U.S. residential housing stock is similarly significant to the national economy. The U.S. GDP is an estimated $18.7 trillion, nearly $10 trillion less than the value of all homes in the country.

2) The Americas Are Finally Entirely Declared Measles-Free

The Region of the Americas is the first in the world to have eliminated measles, a viral disease that can cause severe health problems, including pneumonia, blindness, brain swelling and even death. This achievement culminates a 22-year effort involving mass vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella throughout the Americas.

1) Huge Breakthrough: Gravitational Waves Finally Detected, Proving Einstein Was Right

In a monumental finding that shakes up the world of physics, researchers have detected gravitational waves, which Albert Einstein theorized a century ago. Until now, it wasn’t possible to detect such a phenomenon.

“It’s the first time the universe has spoken to us in the form of gravitational waves,” said the lab’s executive director, who praised the National Science Foundation for helping to fund the research, saying it took a “huge risk” in doing so, given that the finding was never guaranteed. “This [was] truly a scientific moon shot, and we landed on the moon.”

Mainstream media excels at reporting deadly plane crashes and hijackings – but what about all the planes that landed safely?

According to new data released by the Aviation Safety Network, 2016 was the second safest year for aviation on record.

Lead only by 2013 – which experienced only 265 deaths out of the 3 billion people who boarded planes – this most recent year ended with 325 deaths in total, which is about 1 in every 10,769,230 travelers.

Over the course of the last decade, airlines have experienced less and less deaths per capita thanks to newly enforced safety procedures.

The census also shows that the five year average for accidents is at it’s lowest point in 45 years. 2 out of the 19 accidents that occurred in 2016 alone were operated by airlines on the E.U. “black list”. The blacklist, first published in 2006, is a list of airlines that are banned from entering the airspace of any European Union member state due to their failure to meet safety guidelines.

“Since 1997 the average number of airliner accidents has shown a steady and persistent decline, for a great deal thanks to the continuing safety-driven efforts by international aviation organizations such as ICAO, IATA, Flight Safety Foundation and the aviation industry,” said ASN President Harro Ranter.

China Announces Ban on Ivory Trade by End of 2017

elephant-CC jbpic

Following an agreement made with the United States in September 2015, the Chinese government will finally begin phasing out ivory trade until a complete ban is initiated by the end of 2017.

The ban’s deadline and details were announced at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species in October. As China is the largest market for legal and illegal ivory in the world, with as much as an estimated 70% of ivory worldwide ending up in the country, this ban on all exports and imports has the potential to save tens of thousands of elephants from poachers every year.

The government will start by bringing a halt to commercial processing and sale of ivory by March 31st, followed by registered traders.

The landmark decision is greatly welcomed by the nation’s citizens as well – a new study by wildlife group Save the Elephants shows public opinion in China has swung wildly against the ivory trade since 2012 when less than half of the population thought it posed a problem. Today, more than 71% oppose the trade.

That appears to be driving an 85% plummet in the number of Chinese ivory purchases since 2012, and the subsequent price cut from $4,600 a pound to $2,400.

Uber Driver Saves Teen From Sex Trafficking Ring

keith-avila-youtube

What started out as a normal Uber driving shift for Keith Avila turned into an incredible rescue of a 16-year-old girl from a child sex trafficking ring.

Keith was working on Monday night in Sacramento, California when he picked up two women and a young girl. While driving them to a Holiday Inn, he started hearing the adults openly instruct the teen on how to interact with “John” at the hotel. Their instructions reportedly included telling her to “pat him down for weapons while hugging him” and “get the donation from him” before anything happened.

Keith, being the smart man that he is, dropped the women off, drove around the corner, and called the cops.

Police officers arrived at the scene in minutes, arresting the two pimps – Destiny Pettway and Maria Westley – and the man that they were meeting. The teen was apparently a runaway who was then rescued and taken into temporary housing while law enforcement located her family.

“The worst thing I thought would happen when driving Uber is that I would be getting drunk passengers and I would have to handle them,” Avila told NBC Latino. “All my life, I thought about people throwing up in the car as the worst scenario.”

A member of the Uber Safety Team called to thank and congratulate Avila later that week, but he said there was no way he could have done nothing – he was just doing the right thing.
