Dunkin’ Donuts to Eliminate Foam Cups in Stores Worldwide Within Two Years

Dunkin’ Donuts, the pastry restaurant chain with over 12,500 branches worldwide, will spend the next two years phasing out the use of polystyrene cups in favor of paper alternatives.

Currently, the majority of the company’s international stores already use double-walled paper coffee cups – but Dunkin’ now plans on eliminating foam cups from their entire supply chain by 2020.

The move is expected to save over 1 billion foam cups from the waste stream every year.

The initiative is not the first step that the company has taken towards becoming more environmentally friendly, either – all of their restaurants’ cardboard sleeves, carrying trays, napkins, and bags are made out of recycled papers and materials.

Additionally, Dunkin’ Donuts has undertaken several other progressive practices, such as serving Fair Trade certified espresso beans in certain stores, and eliminating artificial dyes and flavors from their menu.

RELATEDSan Francisco Officially Declares Itself a No-Styrofoam Zone

Karen Raskopf, the Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer of the company, said: We have a responsibility to improve our packaging, making it better for the planet while still meeting the needs of our guests. Transitioning away from foam has been a critical goal for Dunkin’ Donuts U.S., and with the double-walled cup, we will be able to offer a replacement that meets the needs and expectations of both our customers and the communities we serve.”

How Mindfulness Shattered My Pain Perception

Two weeks ago, I was in a cotton hospital gown, rubber-soled socks on my feet, an IV inserted into the top of my hand ready to receive anesthesia. The surgeon arrived with his Sharpie pen and made a mark on my belly where he would make the two-inch incision to repair two hernias in my abdominal wall.

“What should I expect in terms of pain afterwards?” I asked him.
“It depends on the person. I’ll give you a prescription for pain medication,” he said. “I don’t know about you, but I don’t like to experience any pain.”

Hmm. That used to be me, I thought.

After my mastectomy in 2009, I had tried to “stay ahead of the pain” by alternating between Percoset and Vicoden every couple of hours. Somehow, despite two masters degrees between us, my husband and I both read the post-op instructions the same way (i.e. completely incorrectly). But it made sense since we’ve grown up in the “I don’t like to experience any pain” culture of the United States.

It wasn’t long before I flipped from being fearful of pain to becoming disgusted by the total lack of pain I felt where my breast had been (all nerve endings had been removed). I could watch a needle go into the area and feel absolutely nothing. It was worse than pain.

RELATEDHow to Feel Healthy and Less Lonely by Spending Time Alone

Having immersed myself over the past nine years in the study and practice of mindfulness and the mind/body connection, the surgeon’s “I don’t like to experience any pain” remark caught my attention.

Taking Myself Off of Autopilot

His offhand comment inspired me to be watchful for autopilot responses to pain. My husband had dutifully picked up the oxycodone prescription as instructed – but I would just wait and see.

I followed the doctor’s instructions to take an over-the-counter pain reliever the first night, then to see how it went. Yes, there was some pain, but it was manageable. More importantly, what I didn’t have was a big story around it, like “Pain is bad! All pain should be eliminated at any cost!”

MOREMeditation and Mindfulness Tips to Combat Everyday Worries and Life’s Big Questions

Some pain would come in waves, but then it would go away. The most fascinating thing was that I caught myself feeling good more often than I caught myself feeling bad.

Memories of my stoned post-mastectomy stupor bubbled up. I released them, reveling in my clarity of mind and sense of gratitude. Over the first four days after my surgery, I took a total of three over-the-counter pain relief pills. I never even opened the bag containing the bottle of oxycodone.

Pain Perception Under the Microscope

I continued to observe my body’s sensory experience in different scenarios. Yes, I rested and slept and even visualized my cells healing as often as I could. The evening of the fifth day, I attended my book club. As I put on my coat to leave, I took note of how little pain I felt (by this point, with no meds at all). Then I stepped outside into the frigid night air.

LOOKEinstein’s Theory of Happy Living Emerges in a Note Uncovered After 95 Years

As soon as the cold hit me, my whole body tensed up and my incision area HURT. Hmm…that’s interesting.

Once I was in my car and relaxed into the warmth, the pain eased. The experience confirmed what I had learned from Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) research: pain is exacerbated when our body is tensed.

I did a quick head to toe body scan, releasing my tension. By the time I started the car, the pain had dissolved completely.

In a strange way, the two weeks since my surgery have been sort of fun. More specifically, my ability to respond to pain skillfully rather than reactively, taking intentional delight in pain-free moments, has been transformative.

When Mom Cancels Appointment to Take Care of Sick Son, Company Sends Her Flowers

Sometimes it’s the smallest good deeds that mean the most to us. In Lindsay Pualoa’s case, it was a bouquet of flowers that was delivered to her door on Monday.

The mother from Ashburn, Virginia had spent most of the might taking care of her son AJ. The toddler had been feeling sick, and by the time the sun came up, he wasn’t feeling any better.

“He was still a hot mess (in the) morning so I cancelled an annual furnace check I had scheduled with our HVAC company,” Pualoa wrote on Facebook. “I just apologized for the late notice, said I had a sick kid at home, and didn’t think much more about it. Three hours later, my doorbell rings and there is a florist at my door.”

The HVAC company, AllTech Services from Sterling, had sent Pualoa flowers with a note saying that they hoped AJ felt better soon.

“I’m floored! I’ve never had something like this happen before,” she added.

Funeral Home Hosts Pizza Parties to Take the Sting Out of Death So People Will Pre-Plan Their Funerals

While it may seem like a pretty cheesy marketing idea, this funeral home has been throwing free pizza parties in order to get families to pre-plan their funerals.

According to Mark Krause, the owner of Krause Funeral Homes in Brookfield, Wisconsin, pre-planning your funeral means putting a certain amount of money into a trust that is kept in your name. No matter where you go and which funeral parlor is responsible for your memorial, the money is always there to take care of things once you pass.

LOOKTeens Volunteer to Serve at Funeral of Veteran With No Family

With funeral prices becoming increasingly more expensive over the years, paying for the service in advance means that your family is most likely to save a lot of money in the long run.

However, it might be hard for some families to get used to talking about death in such a casual way – that’s why Krause got the idea to start throwing the pizza parties.

The pizza party that Krause hosted last year drew as many as 100 guests to the event, all of whom were educated about the benefits of pre-planning. Additionally, a lot of the guests said that they became a lot more comfortable talking about death when it was in such a light-hearted setting.

One of the funeral home customers who was interviewed by WITI said that – despite her initial hesitation over talking about death – she was glad that she was able to plan ahead; and she feels much more at ease with the subject matter, too.

If you would like to attend the next pizza party hosted by Krause Funeral Homes, there will be another one on February 20th from 12pm to 6pm.

France Will Shut Down Its Coal Plants by 2021, Two Years Earlier Than Initially Planned

According to French president Emmanuel Macron, France will be shutting down all of its coal plants by 2021 – two years earlier than originally planned.

Macron made the announcement during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland back in January. The initiative is just one of the green energy solutions employed by Nicolas Hulot – France’s newest ecology minister – to reach the goals of the Paris Agreement.

In July, Hulot announced that the nation would be banning the use of petrol and diesel fueled cars by 2040. As a means of encouraging the conversion to clean energy vehicles, poorer French citizens will be given premiums that will allow them to trade their petrol-powered car for a cleaner alternative.

CHECK OUTIndia Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

These actions are all part of the country’s ambitious plan to become carbon neutral by 2050.

France is one of several countries that have already announced plans to ban the use of petrol and diesel cars in accordance with the Paris Agreement. Norway, whose automotive market is already occupied by 36% electric vehicles, plans on exclusively selling clean vehicles by 2025.

India has also announced efforts to eliminate petrol and diesel cars by 2030. In order to ensure the automotive electricity is coming from a clean grid, the nation’s government is investing in the construction of 10 new alternative energy plants to replace their heavy dependence on coal.

9 Leaders Reveal What Their Biggest Doubters Told Them — and We’re Glad They Ignored it

What do people like Jay-Z, J.K. Rowling, Oprah Winfrey, and Arianna Huffington all have in common?

They did not let their failures stand in the way of achieving their goals and became some of the most successful business people and entrepreneurs of all time.

RELATEDKeanu Reeves Has Been a Secret Charity Badass for Years

In honor of the rejection and failure endured by these nine celebrities, British financial website GoCompare published “I’m Possible: a series of illustrations honoring the world’s greatest innovators – and the harshest words they ever heard when they were climbing the ladder of fame.

9) Arianna Huffington – “This website venture is the sort of failure that is simply unsurvivable.”

Arianna Huffington is no stranger to rejections and failure: her second book was rejected by publishers 36 times and she suffered humiliating results during her 2003 run for governor in California.

Likewise, the launch of the Huffington Post blog was accompanied by lots of ill-wishes and expectations of certain failure, but Huffington surprised everyone by co-founding one of the most influential media outlet of recent times.

8) Jay-Z – “This guy is terrible. He’s nothing.”

At the beginning of his career, no record label was willing to take a chance on a young rapper from Brooklyn named Shawn Corey. Little did they know that he would grow up to be a best-selling musician who also eventually founded his own entertainment company.

In 2017, Forbes listed Jay-Z as the second-richest hip hop artist in the US with a net worth of $810 million.

7) J.K. Rowling – “Get a day job. It’s impossible to make a living writing children’s books.”

Not many people have ever been as wrong as the person who told J.K Rowling that she would never be able to make a living out of her biggest passion.

Rowling went from depending on welfare to one of the richest women in the world and is now the UK’s best-selling living author. Over 400 million copies of the Harry Potter novels have been sold, making them the best-selling book series of all time.

6) Oprah Winfrey – “Unfit for TV and too emotionally invested.”

People were calling for Oprah to run for president earlier this month after she spoke out against sexual harassment in the entertainment industry at the Golden Globes – but can you believe the talk show host and media proprietor was once fired from a news show because she was “too emotionally involved” in the stories she was reporting about?

5) Thomas Edison – “Too stupid to learn anything.”

Far from being stupid, Thomas Edison became one of the greatest inventors of all time with over 1,000 patents held in his name in the US alone, revolutionizing everyday life with inventions such as the light bulb and the phonograph.

4) Anna Wintour – “You’d never understand the American market.”

Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue and artistic director at Condé Nast, was fired from her position as a fashion stylist at Harper’s Bazaar after only 9 months.

However, the fashion icon believes that setbacks are just another part of life and recommends that everyone go through this experience at least once.

3) Sheryl Sandberg – “I would never hire anyone like you.”

It is hard to not get discouraged when the CEO of a tech company tells you he would never hire someone like you, but that is exactly what happened to Sheryl Sandberg during an interview. In 2001, she was struggling to establish herself in the tech industry – but ever since 2008, she has been Facebook’s chief operating officer.

2) James Dyson – “You must be mad.”

20 years ago, James Dyson developed a revolutionary vacuum. The only problem was that no manufacturer wanted to sell it, as it didn’t include the traditional technology of bags and filters, so it was seen as bad for business.

After perfecting the design for 15 years and selling his first model in the Japanese market, Dyson founded his own company in 1993 – and the rest is history.

1) Steve Jobs – “Hey, we don’t need you. You haven’t got through college yet.”

When pioneers of the personal computer Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak presented their ideas to Atari and HP, the rejection was immediate and indisputable. One company even argued that Jobs hadn’t even graduated – not knowing that they had just dismissed the future co-founder and CEO of Apple Inc.

3 Nutrition Tips for Night Owls

The Lesson: If you’re a dyed-in-the-wool night owl, changing your daily rhythm may not be possible. But borrowing a couple of habits from the early birds could help you stay healthier – whether it’s looking after your serotonin levels, or helping your evening diet by taking care of your nutrition earlier in the day.

Notable Excerpt: “Unfortunately for the night owls, our society seems to have been scheduled by the early birds. Standard school and business hours generally start just a few hours after sun up—and several hours before your typical night owl wants to be up and about. As a result, night owls tend to get less sleep than early birds, and suffer from all of the health risks that go along with that.”

Because His AirBnb Guest Had a Heart Attack, Man’s Ingenuity is Now Saving Thousands of Lives

The world is now your oyster – or, if you need it to be, your dialysis machine. And it’s all thanks to a writer who had a near death experience at a man’s AirBnb.

The famous Argentinian penman Hernan Casciari was staying at the home of Javier Artigas through AirBnb in Montevideo, Uruguay when he had a sudden heart attack. Artigas and his wife Alejandra, who worked for the Uruguayan parliament, arranged for a police escort to take Casciari to the hospital. The couple even donated blood to help with their guest’s treatment.

Once Casciari was released from the hospital and sent home to Argentina,  he left Javier and his wife a sparkling 5-star review on AirBnB, reading:

“Excellent house for sedentary travelers prone to myocardial infarctions. The area is beautiful and has direct access to the best hospitals. Javier and Alejandra instantly become guardian angels who will save your life without even knowing you. They will rush you to the hospital in their own car while you’re dying and stay in the waiting room while doctors give you a bypass. They don’t want you to feel lonely, they bring you books to read and they let you stay in their house extra nights without charging you. Highly recommend.”

RELATEDFather Follows Intuition, Hires Helicopter and Finds Injured Son in Crash

Artigas is no stranger to suffering from medical emergencies while traveling abroad either. He was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2007, and for years, he would have to undergo multiple dialysis appointments per week in order to stave off death.

That’s why he created Connectus: an innovative app that connects travelers with kidney disease to hospitals near to their vacation spots.

The app was the birthchild of a harrowing trip that Javier once took to Argentina, where no hospital was able to give him dialysis due to his lack of residency. After twelve long hours, a hospital finally agreed to give Javier dialysis and save his life.

MORECoffee and a Muffin at Restaurant Drive-thru Saves a Stranger’s Life

On his 2,000-kilometer flight home, Javier came up with the idea for Connectus; so the stress the he endured on the trip would never happen to anyone else.

Casciari’s review, along with news of Artigas’s app, was eventually forwarded to AirBnB’s cofounder Joe Gebbia. Gebbia flew down to Montevideo in 2016 so he could stay with Artigas and ask him all about Casciari’s heart attack, Artigas’s medical experiences, and the app. After listening to Artigas’s stories, Gebbia offered to go into business with him.

Now with the added financial might of AirBnb, Connectus (newly-dubbed ConnectusMedical) has grown to serve over 250,000 people.

The good news doesn’t stop there, either – according to the BBC, Artigas received a kidney transplant in August 2017 and he no longer needs dialysis.

China is Reassigning 60,000 Troops to Plant Trees

Over 60,000 Chinese soldiers and military personnel are being re-tasked with a surprising new initiative: planting trees.

According to Asia Times, the country’s Central Military Commission announced that it would be moving regiments of the People’s Liberation Army and some of armed police officers inland from their posts along the northern border so they can be reassigned to non-military tasks – such as planting trees.

In order to further pursue their goals of reforesting the country, China plans on planting at least 84,000 square kilometers (32,400 square miles) of trees during 2018. That’s roughly the size of Ireland.

LOOKIndia Plants Record-breaking 66 Million Trees in 12 Hours

This will hopefully restore the country’s forested regions to about 23% of their land mass – 2% more than the current amount.

Asia Times goes on to say that members of online military forums have explained that – since they are still able to keep their current ranks – the troops are excited to relocate inland away from the icy northern temperatures.

Watch Drake Surprise College Student With $50K Tuition After He Reads Her Essay

Earlier this week, Drake – the adored international hip hop star – became a legend to hundreds of Florida high school and college students… especially for Destiny James.

James is a first-generation junior college student from a low-income family who is studying biology at the University of Miami, according to The Miami Hurricane. When James was applying for scholarships last year, she wrote an essay about her life and the tribulations that she has had to overcome in order to succeed.

Little did she know that her essay had made it into the hands of Drake.

Drake visited the University of Miami on Monday to shoot a music video for his new single “God’s Plan”. Hundreds of students crowded onto the campus to get a glimpse of the superstar. Some even went so far as to climb onto the roof of the food court for a good view.

In addition to partying it up with the students, Drake also wanted to reward James for her essay and surprise her with a massive $50,000 tuition check.

“Apparently, my essay and my story made it to other departments,” says James. “I was contacted this weekend about doing a video speaking about where I come from, things I’ve been through and why it is so important for scholarship donors to continue to donate – [but] this was the surprise the whole time.”

“Drake told me that he has read great things about me and appreciates how hard I’ve worked through so many trials and decided to give me $50K for my tuition.”

“You don’t understand what this means to me! I would’ve never imagined this happening to me. I’m just a girl from Denmark, South Carolina that wants to MAKE IT and be somebody and for [Drake] to see my hard work means the world.

In addition to surprising James with the check, the Canadian rapper also stopped by the Miami Senior High School to shoot some more of the video with the younger students and donate $25,000 to the institution.

Drake also announced that every student at the school would be receiving a uniform made exclusively by OVO, his clothing line.

Thrilled Toddler Yells ‘Dad!’ After Adoption Decree is Announced

Mandi and Tyler Palmer have spent the last sixteen months maneuvering the mountains of paperwork and bureaucratic red tape so that they could finally bring young Hunter into their family. Finally, on December 17th, the toddler became their legal son – and they were all thrilled.

In a blog submission to Love What Matters, Mandi explains how she has been struggling with Crohn’s disease since she was 15 years old. The Perrysburg, Ohio resident has undergone dozens of surgeries to manage the disease, several of which left her without a normally functioning stomach.

The 32-year-old still suffers from malnutrition and continues to endure different surgeries and infusions to keep her condition in check.

Tyler, on the other hand, suffers from PTSD after undergoing two tours in Afghanistan. He currently attends regular therapy sessions at the VA Medical Center.

After the loving couple got married and moved to Ohio, they decided it was time to start a family – but they ran into a few problems.

Mandi told Love What Matters: “We tried for years to get pregnant but soon came to realize that it wasn’t going to happen, nor would it be safe for my body to sustain the miracle of pregnancy due to my illness. We were heartbroken and quickly found ourselves seeking other ways to grow our family and become parents.”

“Because of the health battles we’ve been given, we weren’t the type of people to just ‘throw in the towel’ and let our dreams of becoming parents get shattered,” she added.

Tyler and Mandi then became foster parents so they could try adoption. A week after becoming certified, they got a call about a newborn baby who needed some loving parents to take care of him.

WATCHGirl Stops Mid-Tantrum When She Spins Around and Sees Brother Back From the Navy

“We arrived at children’s services and there was Hunter, all bundled up in a receiving blanket, and he was being held by our caseworker,” said Mandi. “He was 8 days old and absolutely perfect. We fell in love with him instantly.”

“It became obvious that Hunter was more than just our first baby. He was our ‘medicine’ and both of our reasons to fight the health battles that we have been given. He truly became our ‘why’ in life.”

Then back in December, Mandi and Tyler were able to sign the official adoption papers to make Hunter their son. When the judge announced the boy’s new name, Hunter clapped with joy, turned to Tyler, and yelled “Dad!”

The Lesson: Simon Sinek presents a simple (but powerful) model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question “Why?” His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, the Wright brothers, and – as a counterpoint – Tivo.

Notable Excerpt: “Very few people or organizations know why they do what they do. And by why, I don’t mean to make a profit. That’s always a result. By why, I mean what’s your purpose? ‘Back from the dead’: Dog Returns Home 10 Years After Going Missing

Ever since Abby the black Labrador mix had wandered away from their home ten years ago, Debra Suierveld thought that the beloved pup had passed away – until, one decade later, she rejoined the family almost like magic.

Abby had been playing with Suierveld’s kids in the front yard of their Washington Township, Pennsylvania home when she went missing in 2008. When she never returned, the vet who microchipped her had her listed as deceased.

Then last weekend, the hound reappeared on a woman’s front porch in Lower Burrell.

When the lady called the police about the mysterious stray dog, they proceeded to call the Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley. The shelter workers checked the dog’s microchip and found that her name was Abby and she belonged to the Suierveld family.

LOOKMan Finds Puppies Abandoned in the Middle of the Desert and Takes Them on Epic Cross Country Road Trip

Upon calling the Suiervelds about the recovery of their long lost companion, Debra was speechless. Her 22-year-old daughter, Carly, broke down into tears when she heard the news.

“I didn’t even know what to say. I was like, ‘Oh my goodness,’” Debra told the Tribune Review. “She kind of came back from the dead.”

Despite now being 13 years old, Abby still responds to her name. She does have slight fat deposits and some graying around her muzzle, but this is pretty typical for elderly dogs. Otherwise, her good health suggests that another family has been taking care of her for the last decade.

Regardless of her history, however, the Suiervelds are simply happy to be reunited with their old friend.

Watch World’s Tallest Man and Shortest Woman Meet For the First Time

While it may sound like a tall tale, it’s actually true; last week, the world’s tallest man met the world’s smallest woman.

Sultan Kösen is a 35-year-old Turkish man who currently holds the Guinness World Record for his height, measuring in at a whopping 8 feet 3 inches.

WATCHThis Four-Foot Cat is the Biggest – and Most Lovable – in New York City

Jyoti Amge is a 24-year-old Indian woman who also holds a Guinness record – but for the opposite. Amge measures in at just 24.7 inches tall, making her the smallest woman in the world.

The two met at the Great Pyramids of Giza last Friday as a way to bolster the faltering tourist industry in Egypt.

The Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board said that Amge and Kösen would be visiting other famous national sites during their stay in the North African country.

Kösen, who is the first person to measure over 8 feet in the last decade, is only one of ten people who have ever been recorded to break 8 feet in history. The gentle giant grew to such heights because of a condition called “pituitary gigantism”, which is caused by an over-production of growth hormones.

Though he wasn’t able to finish school because of his height, the Kurdish man worked as a farmer to support his family before finding success as an actor in several Hollywood films.

Amge’s height, on the other hand, is caused by a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

At 18 years old, the teen was declared the smallest woman in 2011. She has since become an actress on the hit television show “American Horror Story”.
