Largest Ever Hybrid-Electric Aircraft Takes Flight – and Airlines Are Already Expressing Interest

Environmentalists have high hopes for the future of air travel after the highest-capacity hybrid-electric aircraft recently took to the skies in California during its first ever test flight.

Earlier this week, engineers, investors and journalists witnessed the hybrid-electric Ampaire 337 took flight above Camarillo Airport.

This is a significant step for aviation because a hybrid-electric aircraft this of this size ever flown before. Ampaire’s 337 is built with a direct path towards commercialization—moving electric aviation firmly from futuristic to attainable.

The aircraft, which was designed by Ampaire Inc., was retrofitted with Ampaire’s proprietary electric propulsion system and is powered by a lightweight battery system.

LOOKGermany Debuts First Overhead Power Lines for Keeping Electric Trucks Charged on the Highway

The battery-powered electric motor replaces a combustion engine of the aircraft’s original two-engine configuration, and the resulting system is a “parallel hybrid”, meaning the internal combustion engine and electric motor work in concert to optimize power output as the plane flies. In hybrid configuration, the aircraft sees significant greenhouse gas emissions savings and operating cost reductions.

“The first flight of Ampaire’s electric passenger aircraft is a huge step forward for aviation,” said Deborah Flint, CEO of Los Angeles World Airports. “As a cleantech company that was started in our great city … Ampaire’s incredible achievement further cements Los Angeles as the leader in transportation electrification and technology innovation.”

Aircrafts are a significant contributor to both local and global emissions. Electric and hybrid-electric aircraft will reduce GHG emissions and air pollution even as more and more goods and people fly. Additionally, electric aircrafts are quieter, more efficient and cost much less to fly and maintain connecting communities, making skies quieter.

“Imagine that in just a few years you will be able to buy a ticket for a flight that is clean, quiet and inexpensive,” said Kevin Noertker, CEO of Ampaire. “Ampaire is proud to lead the aviation industry in transportation electrification, and we recognize the importance of electric aviation for climate change and community connectivity.”

MOREUK Trains Will Run On Hydrogen Power Within Three Years and Produce Zero Emissions

“Given the urgency of the climate crisis, today’s historic flight not only signifies a huge step forward for aviation, it also shines a light on Los Angeles’s leadership in transportation electrification,” said Matt Petersen, CEO of the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI).

Ampaire has mapped a clear path from today’s first test flight of a prototype to commercial operations in 2021. This week’s test flight follows the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) May 2019 airworthiness approval to begin a flight test program. The test flights will see the aircraft fly multiple times per week from June through August 2019 and will gather data about the electric propulsion performance characteristics.

In late 2019, Ampaire will begin a pilot project on a commercial route on the Hawaiian island of Maui. The aircraft will be a newly retrofitted Cessna 337 built with learnings from the test flight program that inform the configuration of the battery and motor. This aircraft will be a pre-production prototype and will move Ampaire closer to commercial readiness.

LOOKElon Musk’s First Ultra-Fast Underground Transit Tunnel Will Opened to the Public in December

Ampaire’s focus is on supplying aircraft to regional airlines— who typically fly short-haul—often serving remote communities and island regions. In addition to the upcoming pilot project in Maui, Ampaire is also in collaboration with a regional airline in Puerto Rico to establish a pilot project in the region.

Furthermore, Ampaire has signed Letters of Interest with 14 other airlines from around the world.

Retired Pharmacist Has Collected 120,000 Cigarette Butts From Streets to Make Cig-nificant Works of Art

A 69-year-old granddad has collected 120,000 cigarette butts from the streets of a seaside resort so he can turn them into works of anti-smoking art.

Retired pharmacist Negweny El Assal uses up to 8,000 butts to create mosaic masterpieces carrying messages that warn against the nasty habit.

Assal spends his weekdays walking around the seaside resort of Blackpool, England to clear the streets of the plastic pollutant and encourage businesses to install cigarette disposal bins.

RELATEDThese Tobacco Filters Grow into Plants When Littered

Assal says that he can typically pick up around 3,000 butts an hour. Since he started his voluntary clean-up mission three months ago, he has created around 50 works of art with anti-smoking and anti-littering messages.

Each creation takes him around a day to complete. Assal will secure each butt to his makeshift canvas by cutting them in half length-ways so it sits flat using toothpaste as glue.

“It can be very smelly working with cigarettes,” said Assal. “I always wear gloves.”

The married father-of-six and grandfather-of-four lives in Luxembourg and works in Blackpool from Monday to Friday for his company, Cigarette Waste Management Ltd. He said he chose Blackpool as the destination for his company because it’s an international tourist hotspot.

“I wanted to choose a place where I could make a real difference. Tourist destinations should be beautiful, they trade on their beauty,” said Assal.

WATCHHow a 97-Year-old Artist Used Doodles to Save His Beloved Hometown From Being Torn Down

“I also wanted to get my message out there to a lot of people. Blackpool has 11 to 13 million visitors a year and 20% of the British public visit here every year.

“When I go out I have my grabber in one hand and a basket in the other to collect all the cigarette butts. I also have a plastic bag to collect the rubbish as I go along.

“I also ask businesses if they will install a cigarette box so people can dispose of their tabs properly, and not on the floor.”

Disposable plastics are the biggest contributor to marine litter, with cigarette butts and filters being the most commonly found individual items.

“People do not realize that the filters are plastic; they think they are cotton,” says the Egyptian environmentalist. “This waste is often picked up by the seagulls here and used in their nests.

“The toxic tobacco at the end of a cigarette is filled with chemicals. It is not good for humans and it is not good for animals.

“If a person smokes past the filter they are smoking plastic. Tobacco companies tend to make filters smaller so smokers don’t smoke the plastic by accident, but that means more tobacco is discarded as waste, which is also dangerous.

LOOKMan Cleans Up Brazilian Streets By Turning Discarded Tires into Cute Recycled Animal Beds

“I hope to not only encourage stopping the litter but also stopping smoking.”

Assal is hoping his project could help meet stricter new European rules on the disposal of the plastic polluters. In the future, cigarette producers will have to pay for the clean-up of littered cigarette butts and for awareness-raising campaigns – and Assal’s pilot project in Blackpool could demonstrate to tobacco firms what can be done to tackle the problem.

His mission now is to open a gallery of his art to showcase his work and spread his message.

He also aims to give local businesses 1,400 wall-mounted disposal bins free of charge so smokers will be encouraged not to drop their used cigarettes on the ground.

“My target is to eliminate every cigarette butt from the streets of Blackpool and Blackpool will lead the world showing how it can be done,” says Assal.

Entrepreneur Has Bought 10,000 Unused Ride-Sharing Bikes So He Can Donate Them to Poor Students

Rather than letting thousands of perfectly good bicycles go to waste, an entrepreneur is rescuing them from the trash heap and sending them to children in Myanmar.

Since bike-sharing company oBike withdrew from the Singapore market and began their liquidation process in June 2018, Mike Than Tun Win was heartbroken by the mountains of discarded bicycles that were left behind.

“It felt extremely sad for me to see all these bicycles piling up in junkyard, left around roads and parks unattended and rusting,” Win wrote in a blog post.

RELATEDThis Clever Little School Has Been Requiring Students to Pay for Tuition With Plastic Waste Instead of Money

“The manufacturing of these bicycles can cost anywhere from $300 to $500 per unit and a lot of natural resources are now left to waste and sent to blazing furnaces to be recycled (if we are lucky) or just simply left rusting somewhere else.”

Win then thought about all the young village children he had seen walking to school during his various road trips through Myanmar in the past – and he was suddenly struck with a bolt of inspiration.

“It’s a common sight to see lines and lines of students walking long distances from home to school in rural villages,” said Win, according to Tech Crunch. “Some students can walk up to one hour from home to school and the families can hardly afford a simple form of transport like bicycle or motorcycle… a school bus is almost unheard of to the students in rural villages.”

Win then started the LessWalk nonprofit so he could buy up all of oBike’s unused bicycles and donate them to schoolchildren.

The project has come with its fair share of expenses; in addition to replacing ride-sharing electrical system with regular key locks, Win says that he has encountered mountains of legislative red tape and fees in relation to shipping the bikes from Singapore to Myanmar.

MORETwo Scottish Entrepreneurs Are Working to Replace Palm Oil With the Oil From Used Coffee Grounds

That being said, Win is happy to report that he has successfully shipped and received about 4,700 brand new bikes with 5,300 more already on the way.

“The initiative is better than expected as I was trying to buy used bikes from recycling graveyards but managed to get 100% new, undeployed bicycles at a very good price!” writes Win.

“All bicycles are free for students living below the poverty line in Myanmar and need to walk 2 kilometers to school,” he added.

The nonprofit has been funding their mission with sponsorships and donations, but the bulk of their $400,000 financing has come straight from Win’s pocket.

He is currently in talks with various government organizations and grassroots charities in order to properly distribute the bikes. Ideally, LessWalk will begin distributing the bikes over the course of the next few weeks.

“I have been planning this since 1st March when I published [my idea] on Facebook and Linkedin,” writes Win. “Three months after my post, I am super glad that I can finally start working on it!”

Four Teenage Boys Rushed to Burning Home to Save 90-Year-old Neighbor Trapped Inside

A 90-year-old woman is alive and well thanks to a group of teenage boys who came to her rescue one evening when her house suddenly caught fire.

Catherine Richie had been in the bathroom of her Sapulpa, Oklahoma home last month when she turned around and saw that her bed had somehow become engulfed in flames.

Richie spent some time trying to extinguish the flames before she eventually gave up, called 911, and pressed her emergency call button.

When she tried to evacuate the house, however, she found that she could barely make her way through the smoke.

Meanwhile, four boys ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old were leaving the neighbor’s house so they could get something to drink from the nearby convenience store. When they smelled smoke coming from Richie’s house, they immediately jumped into action.

As one of the boys attempted to get help from the other neighbors, the other three youngsters attempted to break into the house from various entrance points. 14-year-old Seth Byrd eventually managed to get in through the back door, and upon finding Richie lost in her smoky hallway, Seth picked her up and carried her outside.

One of Richie’s ten children, Missy Ritchie Nicholas, later wrote a blog post to praise the young men for taking action.

“Kids who are told about all the things they aren’t old enough to do saved the life of the most precious and beloved woman we know,” wrote Nicholas. “Young men who risked their own lives, their own safety, perhaps their good standing with their parents who might have chosen for them to do otherwise, and they carried my mother out of her burning home into the street, where firetrucks and ambulances would soon arrive.

“Thank you for your selfless acts of heroism and courage,” she added. “Thank you for not allowing this to be the tragic end to our mother’s amazing life. Thank you for staying with her, hugging her, and helping her feel less alone until we could get to her. Thank you for being the kind of young men who thought about another person above yourselves.”

Watch How This Couple Spent 20 Years Transforming Desolate Patch of Land into Flourishing Rainforest

What started as a desolate patch of land in 1991 has grown to be one of the most dazzling rainforest sanctuaries in the world.

Back when Pamela and Anil Malhotra purchased what is now the Sai Sanctuary of southern India, the 55 acres of land had been deforested for cardamom and coffee fields.

The couple started to rehabilitate the land by nursing the natural grasses and shrubbery back into healthy abundance. With the return of the greenery, native insects returned to the fields. Once the insects returned, the couple helped coax the rainforest’s native trees back to their former glory.

With the return of the trees, elephants and monkeys moved back into the territory as well.

Now, the former patch of arid wasteland has blossomed into 300 acres of lush greenery.

Over the course of the 20-year healing process, the National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries has recognized the vital importance of the Sai Sanctuary and offered protections over the land. The rainforest is also now called one of the hottest “hot spots” of biodiversity in the world, according to the United Nations

Scientists Rallying Behind New Universal Platform That Will Make Research Available to the Masses for Free

In a bid to make scientific articles more accessible to the masses, researchers are rallying for a new universal platform that will make research articles available for free.

Scientific research usually takes months to be published by academic journals, and once it is, many of the papers can only be read by scientists from wealthy institutes that subscribe to the journals.

Over the years, there have been various attempts to make research more widely available, but most papers remain behind paywalls and scientists complain that the peer review process at journals now takes longer than ever.

In a new article published earlier this week in the open-access journal PLOS Biology, Richard Sever and John Inglis from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Mike Eisen from UC Berkeley propose a new solution to these problems, which they call Plan U (for “universal”).

RELATEDThis Clever Little School Has Been Requiring Students to Pay for Tuition With Plastic Waste Instead of Money

They call on the organizations that fund research – government agencies such as NIH and charities like the Howard Hughes Medical Institute – to require the scientists they support to post drafts of their papers on free websites called “preprint servers” before submitting them to academic journals.

The value of this approach was demonstrated by arXiv (pronounced “archive”), a preprint server in the physical sciences that has been running for 28 years and hosts more than a million papers. The biological branch of this platform called BioRxiv, which was founded by Sever and Inglis in 2013, is growing rapidly as more and more biologists realize the benefits of publicizing their work earlier rather than later.

As well as making papers available sooner – and to everyone – Plan U should speed up research itself because other experts can immediately begin building on the work. It should also stimulate evolution of the publication system.

MORERather Than Close Their Doors, South Korean School Fills Classrooms With Illiterate Older Women

“Because preprint servers take care of dissemination, scientific journals don’t have to worry about that part and so have more freedom to experiment with how they do peer review,” Sever said – and servers reduce the barrier to entry for new initiatives since they no longer have to cover the costs of hosting the papers themselves.

“Plan U therefore creates fertile ground for a dynamic new ecosystem, opening opportunities for experimentation with peer review rather than prescribing a particular process, endpoint, or business model,” writes the researchers. “Such flexibility may be of particular benefit to scientific societies, nonprofit organizations, journals, and self-organizing groups of academics who wish to improve on existing approaches to peer review and/or explore alternative ways to evaluate academic output.”

For 40 Years, No One Could Open Museum Safe – Until Cheeky Dad Cracked It On His First Try

For 40 years, no one has been able to open this museum safe.

Locksmiths tried and failed to crack the code; the safe’s former owners could not remember the combination; and the manufacturers simply could not figure out how to reset the lock.

Experts said that the safe may have been untouched for so long, that even with the correct combination, the gears were simply failing to fall into place.

Since the safe had been condemned as “impossible” to open, it sat in the basement of the Vermilion Heritage Museum in Alberta, Canada and gathered dust – that is, until Stephen Mills visited the little town with his family.

RELATEDSimple Mistake in the Kitchen Turns into Sweet Success for a Homeless Veteran

The 36-year-old stopped by the museum last week with his wife and kids. In the midst of their museum tour, the guide explained the mystery of the safe to the family, and Mills could not resist taking a crack at the code.

“I was like, I gotta get down and try this for a laugh,” he told The Washington Post. “I was doing it as a joke for the kids, trying to be like in the movies more or less.”

Mills, who works as a machinist and welder, crouched down next to the safe and put his ear to the door. Upon noticing that the lock’s digits ranged from 0 to 60, he decided to try a simple 3-digit combination.

LOOK87-Year-old Walking to Buy Mega Millions Ticket Breaks His Hip, Then Wins Hospital Lottery Pool

Over the course of the following 30 seconds, Mills spun the lock from 20 to 40 to 60 – and to everyone’s shock, the door swung open.

“I took the numbers out of thin air, like right out of my head,” he told The Post. “Right away, I stood up, and I was like, ‘I’m buying a lottery ticket tonight.’”

Town residents had always joked that the safe was filled with jewels and gold bricks – but as the tour group eagerly peered inside of the fabled treasure chest, they only found several yellowed papers from the 1970s, only some of which included a waitress’s notepad with an order for a mushroom burger and a payout slip for a hotel employee.

Regardless of the safe’s contents, museum staffers were over the moon with excitement – although they say that they have put duct tape over the locking mechanism to keep it from resealing itself in the future.

The “world’s largest and most advanced” hydrogen refueling station has just been opened to the public in Shanghai.

The Shanghai Chemical Industry Hydrogen Refueling Station, which covers an area of about 8,000 square meters (86,000 square feet), was developed by SAIC Motors.

Since they began researching and investing in hydrogen cell technology in 2001, the company has become one of the first corporate drivers for the sustainable automotive industry in China.

The new refueling station, which is located in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, has a refueling capacity of more than 2 tons of hydrogen. For perspective, this report from the US Department of Energy says that the average hydrogen refueling station capacity in California is about one-sixth of that.

LOOKGermany Debuts First Overhead Power Lines for Keeping Electric Trucks Charged on the Highway

The new Shanghai station will not only provide support for 20 SAIC hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that will be operated in the region, but also provide commercial services to all sectors of the society. A press release from SAIC also states that the “hydrogen refueling station uses the hydrogen produced by the chemical industry [in order to] actively contribute to the development of circular economy in Shanghai.”

The automotive group currently employs a fleet of more than 400 model FCV 80 passenger buses that use dual lithium and hydrogen battery systems in Northeastern China.

Experts are estimating that there will be at least 10,000 hydrogen fuel cell cars on Chinese roads by 2020 and an additional 100 hydrogen refueling stations.

Robert Downey Jr. is Creating a Foundation That Will Use Robots to Clean Up the Environment

Robert Downey Jr. is famed for being a beloved Hollywood actor, philanthropist, and writer – but now he is adding “robotics environmentalist” to his list of good qualities.

Earlier this week, the Iron Man actor took to the stage at the Amazon Re:Mars conference in Las Vegas to announce the creation of his new foundation which will use nanotechnology and robotics as a means of cleaning up the planet.

Downey Jr. did not disclose many details on how the organization will begin its clean-up mission, but a Footprint Coalition website went live shortly after the actor’s announcement.

WATCHWillie Nelson Has Rescued 70 Horses Destined for the Slaughterhouse, So They Can Roam Free On His Farm

As of right now, the website only features a sign-up sheet for future newsletters and updates, but Downey Jr. says that he will be spending the next 11 months collaborating with UN experts and building up the organization so the coalition can get to work by April 2020.

After that, Downey Jr. says that “between robotics and nanotechnology we could probably clean up the planet significantly, if not entirely, within a decade.”

Downey Jr. also explained how his neglect towards the environment in the past is now inspiring him to take action. “I have this quiet sense of crisis,” he said, according to reporters. “I’m a one-man carbon footprint nightmare colossus … [but] I want to change.”

Regardless of the actor’s precise plan of action, Forbes estimates that Downey Jr.’s net worth is about $81 million – more than enough to start tidying up the planet.

The Re:Mars conference, which stands for “Machine learning, Automation, Robotics and Space”, hosted a variety of speakers who gave presentations on the benefits of artificial intelligence. In addition to announcing the launch of his organization, Downey Jr. also talked about how he and his wife Susan will be the executive producers of a new YouTube Red documentary series on the wonders of AI – which will of course be narrated by Downey Jr.

Dog is Finally Rescued by Hiker Three Weeks After Falling into Cave Miles From Civilization

After being trapped in a cave for three weeks, this lucky pup was finally saved from her plight thanks to a hiker who happened to hear her calls for help.

Joe Dunn is an avid hiker who was exploring the forests of Withlacoochee State Forest near Tampa, Florida last weekend when he heard yelps coming from amongst the trees.

Upon following the canine cries, he found a dog trapped at the bottom of a very deep cave.

Without any rope or safety equipment, he had no idea how he would be able to save the dog without getting trapped in the cave himself. Additionally, the cave was located several miles away from civilization, Dunn had almost no cell phone coverage in the woods, and daylight was fading fast.

RELATEDWatch the Moment a Sloth Thanks Its Rescuers for Saving It From Oncoming Traffic

Dunn quickly dumped all of his food and snacks into the cave so the dog would have something to eat before he hiked back out of the forest and posted a call for help on his social media pages.

The very next day, several Good Samaritans from across central Florida drove to Tampa and followed Dunn into the park with rescue equipment in hand.

Once they had found the cave – with the distressed dog still inside – one of the volunteers attached themselves to a cable and rappelled into the gorge. The rescuer then secured the dog into a harness so the other hikers could pull her out.

“The dog was so happy,” Joe told WFLA. “She just rolled around on the grass, wanting her belly rubbed. She was the happiest animal I’ve ever seen.”

After they gave the pup some water, the rescuers were even more excited to discover that her dog collar was inscribed with her owner’s phone number and her name: Sally.

The owner was reportedly overwhelmed with relief upon being reunited with his dog three weeks after she disappeared – and Dunn says that he was simply happy to help.

“Going through all this, it made me feel really rewarded, helping another life survive,” Dunn told the news outlet. “To help something good happen in this world.”

African Elephant Poaching Has Fallen By More Than 50% Over the Course of the Last 6 Years

Reprinted with permission from World At Large, a news website reporting on nature, science, health, and travel.

After 6 years of decline, the numbers of elephants killed illegally in Africa has dropped from 10% to less than 4%.

Attempting to disseminate the overall poaching problem down into its component mechanisms, the researchers analyzed annual surveillance data from 53 different sites across the continent between 2002 and 2017, totaling half of all the African elephants in the world.

This was an important step that often stands in the way of people understanding the problem of poaching as it relates to individual communities of elephants, rather than the species as a whole.

RELATEDRats Are Saving Elephants From Hidden Landmines on Their Migration Routes

The research findings, which were published in Science last week, highlights the fact that while elephant poaching is a pan-African problem, it’s clear that certain populations are more targeted, while others are growing in size, like the herds in Kruger National Park and some, like in Etosha, Namibia, that have never experienced poaching at all.

One of the major focuses of the paper was the demand for ivory. Ivory has long been used as a precious artisan material in Chinese culture, and the demand for ivory in the middle-class was a strong predictor of increased elephant poaching during the 21st century.

With China’s combination of a growing middle-class, historical affinity for ivory as an artisanal product, widespread involvement in various African economies, and the summarized data of seized in-bound ivory shipments, the research suggests that China is one of the major drivers of elephant poaching.

LOOKFarmer is Sweet on Bee Hives As Perfect Fence to Keep Elephants Safely Away

As such, one of the perceived reasons for the bounce-back of elephant numbers has been a recent ban on ivory trade in China. In 2017, China made it illegal to trade in ivory, and it’s considered that a popular PSA condemning the trade in shark fin, rhino horn, and elephant ivory that featured Jackie Chan and Yao Ming fist-bumping an elephant’s trunk was particularly effective.

Since ivory trade is illegal, good market data for the commodity remains inaccessible; instead the researchers measured supply by analyzing large-scale ivory seizures, and measured market value by the typical market price of illegal mammoth ivory.

Having established the overall ivory exporting rates and value, the team went on to assess the factors which might contribute to the distribution of poaching rates across the continent as well as the ability to control supply. For this, they examined factors which might point to poor national stability such as infant mortality rate, perceived corruption index, poverty distributions, site area, and law-enforcement adequacy.

CHECK OUT: With Only 147 of World’s Fattest Parrots Left, This Year’s Baby Boom Has Left Researchers Positively Squawking

Looking at all the different co-factors, the researchers found that poverty density, specifically in villages around examined sites, and corruption in state institutions were the biggest drivers along with ivory market price.

“It is striking that poverty and corruption-related covariates correlate with local and country-wide levels of poaching more strongly than estimates of law enforcement adequacy,” writes the authors of the study.

WATCHHow a Former Teacher Beat the Mining Industry and Saved the Rare Snow Leopards

“This is possibly due to difficulty in estimating law enforcement adequacy; however, all assessors were trained and we consider it likely that targeting poverty and corruption really are more effective options.”

The study concludes by saying that as of 2017, the birth rate of the African elephant was replenishing the over 320,000 individuals roaming the African wilderness. Since demand is limited now that China has banned the trade of ivory, tackling supply will be far more effective than it once was.

After 40 Years, Homeless Man Will Get His Degree Debt-Free Thanks to One Student and Anonymous Alumni

A tenacious young college student has given a homeless man a second lease on life thanks to a simple school assignment.

Ryan Chandler, who is a junior-year journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin, first spoke to the panhandler as a means of interviewing him for a class project on homelessness – and Chandler was stunned by the conversation that ensued.

Chandler opted to interview David Carter, a homeless man who is commonly seen around the school campus – and he learned that the 65-year-old homeless man used to be a student at the very same university.

RELATEDRather Than Close Their Doors, South Korean School Fills Classrooms With Illiterate Older Women

Carter first enrolled in the school’s arts program in 1971. He dreamed of using his degree to become a great artist or writer – but after dealing with a number of mental health issues and substance abuse, he was forced to drop out several years later.

Carter then spent the next four decades coping with schizophrenia, homelessness and addiction. Though he spent some time hitchhiking around the country, he later returned to Austin so he could care for his ailing parents.

After he returned to the city, he liked to spend time around the UT Austin campus because he dreamt of the day he would eventually be able to reenroll and finish his degree in studio arts.

Thankfully, Carter was able to qualify for stable housing through a local nonprofit six years ago. With a roof over his head, Carter tried to reenroll at UT Austin several times – but because he did not have access to a computer or money for the application fees, he was never accepted.

After Chandler heard his story, however, the 20-year-old journalism student resolved to help the homeless man get back into school.

CHECK OUT: LeBron James Opened School for District’s Most Hopeless Students – Their Latest Test Scores Are Astonishing

Over the course of the last six months since their initial interview, Chandler has worked with college administrators to get his new friend reenrolled. He managed to get a hold of Carter’s transcripts and found that the former student had already racked up 87 credit hours, leaving him with only 64 credit hours to go before he could earn his degree.

Finally, after almost half a year of jumping through hoops, Carter was accepted into UT’s College of Fine Arts.

Chandler was initially planning on starting a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Carter’s tuition – but an anonymous UT Austin alumni offered to pay for Carter’s education after they read about his struggles in the school’s online magazine.

Needless to say, Carter has been overwhelmed by the sudden surge of support.

“It’s the greatest blessing I’ve ever received,” Carter told Spectrum Local News. “[Chandler] did what had to be done to get me enrolled in those classes, and I couldn’t have done it without him.

MOREConstruction Begins on New School Designed For (And By) Homeless Children

“What I’d like to do is spend the rest of my life just doing research and writing books,” he added, “But I think the books I write will be better because of the college education and coming into contact with the great minds.”

Doug Dempster, who is the dean of the College of Fine Arts, commended his new student in a statement saying: “David Carter’s resolve to complete his degree is testament to finishing well what was started, and interrupted, even decades earlier. We welcome him back as we do many students each year whose education took a less direct path. We admire his courage and persistence.

“We’re going to give him every assistance to help him through his remaining course work. We’re grateful for the generosity of fellow Longhorns who are stepping up to support Mr. Carter,” he added.

Researchers have determined that gum disease (gingivitis) plays a decisive role in whether a person develops Alzheimer’s or not.

“We discovered DNA-based proof that the bacteria causing gingivitis can move from the mouth to the brain,” says researcher Piotr Mydel from the University of Bergen (UiB).

The bacteria produces a protein that destroys nerve cells in the brain, which in turn leads to loss of memory and ultimately, Alzheimer’s.

The study is published in Science Advances.

The bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.gingivalis) is one of the main causes of gum infection. The bacteria causes chronic infection in the gums, but can move to the brain where it can damage nerve cells in the brain. Circa 50% of the population have this bacteria in one form or another and 10% of the ones having this bacteria will develop serious gum disease, loose teeth, and have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition to Alzheimers, the bacteria is linked to rheumatism, COPD and esophageal cancer.

Mydel points out that the bacteria is not causing Alzheimer’s alone, but the presence of these bacteria raise the risk for developing the disease substantially and are also implicated in a more rapid progression of the disease. However, the good news is that this study shows that there are some things you can do yourself to slow down Alzheimer’s.

“Brush your teeth and use floss.” Mydel adds that it is important, if you have established gingivitis and have Alzheimer’s in your family, to go to your dentist regularly and clean your teeth properly.

Researchers have previously discovered that the bacteria causing gingivitis can move from the mouth to the brain where the harmful enzymes they excrete can destroy the nerve cells in the brain.

Now, for the first time, Mydel has DNA-evidence for this process from human brains. Mydel and his colleagues examined 53 persons with Alzheimer’s and discovered the enzyme in 96% of the cases. According to Mydel, this knowledge gives researchers a possible new approach for attacking Alzheimer’s disease.

“We have managed to develop a drug that blocks the harmful enzymes from the bacteria, postponing the development of Alzheimer’s. We are planning to test this drug later this year,” says Mydel.

14-Year-old Sold So Many Homemade Cupcakes in One Year, He Took His Entire Family to Disney World

Some kids try to earn a little extra pocket change by mowing the lawn; others might try to wash cars; but Isaiah Tuckett has earned himself thousands of dollars simply by baking cupcakes.

The 14-year-old boy has been serving baked goods to the people of Madison, Minnesota ever since he made his first batch of cupcakes with this grandma two years ago.

Coincidentally, Isaiah embraced his new hobby just as the town bakery closed up shop, making him the only homemade baked goods source for 30 miles in any direction.

Isaiah began selling his cupcakes at $20 per dozen for birthdays, graduation parties, proms, reunions, funerals, and weddings.

With his little business booming, Isaiah resolved to start saving his earnings for a very special new goal: he wanted to take his family to Disney World.

Isaiah had always wanted to go to Disney World, but his family could never afford it. In just one short year of baking cupcakes, however, Isaiah had saved up enough money to pay for the Disney World tickets, airfare, and hotel rooms for his mom, dad, sister, brother, sister-in-law, and nephew – roughly $4,500 in total.

Though Isaiah told KARE11 that he was “surprised” he managed to reach his goal in a year, he now plans on saving up his cupcake earnings so he can buy a new truck when he turns 16. After that, he plans to attend culinary school.

An Incredible Bonus I Just Discovered: Fasting is as Nourishing for the Soul as It Is Healthy for the Body

“Intermittent fasting” seems to be all the latest graze.

The basic concept is simple: refrain from eating foods during a prolonged period typically 12 to 24 hours. Some of these intermittent fasts are recommended to do twice a week, some for 5 days a week and some for 30 days straight. The irony, is that people have been intermittent fasting for thousands of years, but science is just now uncovering the incredible benefits of timed eating. It can help prevent health problems such as high cholesterol, heart disease and obesity, as well as improve mental health and wellbeing. However, one incredible bonus benefit that most articles forget to mention is the nourishment of the soul.

I just completed a 29-day fast. For 29 straight days, I fasted from 4:30am until around 8pm. I woke up around 4am to have a light meal, water and coffee. Throughout the day, I didn’t eat or drink anything. I wanted to immerse myself into the fast. I wanted to see if I could stick with it and feel the health benefits and mental wellbeing as a result.

I must admit, it was mentally hard the first few days. I got caught up in counting the hours, let alone how many days have passed by. I remember looking around and, for the first time, really seeing how much people are consumed with eating and drinking. You can’t help but see it. In the beginning, I was so jealous. I wanted to just have my cup of coffee during a meeting and grab a bite to eat for lunch.

But then around the 10-day mark, something truly magical happened—my thoughts went from jealousy to gratitude.

Instead of seeing all the people eating and drinking around me, I saw the people who were not eating and drinking around me. I became so conscience of the less fortunate. The idea of me being able to eat and drink at 8pm and them still wondering where their next meal will come, affected me.

My soul really became connected to others. I started talking about it more to my family, friends, and co-workers. I started giving more to charity and devoting more of my time to helping others. I started to have more patience and simply slow down a bit. I started to feel connected to everyone and everything around me.  Instead of counting the days I had left in my fast, I started wondering if I would lose this soulful connection when I ended it. I decided that this fast is really a mind, body and soul boot camp—and I was being prepared for the days and months ahead. I pushed myself so that when I eventually reached the end, I could still hold on to the values that I gained during the fast.

Some of you may want to know the name of this fast. It’s the same fast that billions of people around the world all did with me at the same time. It is called Ramadan.

It is the fast prescribed to all healthy and able Muslims: once a year, for one month, devotees of Islam fast from sunrise to sunset, abstaining from food, drink and sexual relations. It may seem to be relegated to the fringes of Western society, but Christians, Jews and other non-Muslims have participated in many interfaith fasts with Muslims for years. It doesn’t matter if you are Muslim or not, the benefits listed above and many more work on everyone.

I hope you all get the opportunity to experience fasting – of any kind. Do the research and try it out. Don’t be afraid, or if you are, it’s ok. Getting yourself out of your comfort zone is a good thing. May the fast be with you!

If You’ve Ever Taken a Picture That Embodies Kindness, Then It Could Win You Some Cash in This Photo Contest

Research has shown that viewing images of peace, kindness, and compassion has a dramatic impact on a person’s happiness and wellbeing – and that’s why photographers from all over the world are now being asked to share their kindest photos.

Envision Kindness, a nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading media positivity, is holding their third annual photography contest for images that embody kindness.

“Every day, people are exposed to negative images, stories, and experiences,” says David Fryburg, founder of Envision Kindness. “We know that this exposure is stressful to the viewer—it causes anger, anxiety, depression, and can affect behavior, disconnecting people from one another.”

“To help counterbalance the negative, we want to share diverse, positive images like those submitted to the contest on a regular basis. We know that these images have great power to bring out joy, gratitude, optimism, love, and compassion.”

Last year’s contest received more than 2,000 images from photographers in over 100 countries – and the results were breathtaking.

Currently, there is just a few more weeks left to submit to the 2019 Our World is Kind Photography Contest, and the Envision Kindness team is hoping that this year will garner another stunning set of images.

The contest is open to anyone 18 years or older until it closes on June 30th. There is no fee to enter and all submissions are eligible to win up to $500 in cash prizes.
