Benedict Cumberbatch Runs to Save Cyclist Being Attacked by Four Men

Sherlock Holmes running to rescue a pedestrian in distress sounds exactly like something out of the original book series, but earlier this week, that heroic story actually came to life—and it happened right near Baker St. in London.

Uber driver Manuel Dias was escorting a middle-aged married couple to their destination when they suddenly saw a bicyclist being mobbed by four young men.

The cyclist, who was a delivery rider for the meal service Deliveroo, had just removed his helmet when the attackers broke a bottle over his head and started to hit him.

Dias’s passenger jumped out of the car and ran into the fray, yelling “Leave him alone” – and it was then that he realized that his passenger was none other than Benedict Cumberbatch, the film and television actor from BBC’s Sherlock and Dr. Strange.

RELATEDHarry and Meghan Donate Royal Wedding Leftovers to Cheer Up Hospice Patients

As 53-year-old Dias ran to help Cumberbatch, the Sherlock star pulled the young men off of the cyclist and broke up the attack.

“I had hold of one lad and Benedict another. He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave. He did most of it, to be honest,” Dias told The Star. “They tried to hit him but he defended himself and pushed them away. He wasn’t injured. Then I think they also recognized it was Benedict and ran away.”

Ironically, the attack took place right around the corner from Baker Street, which is the block on which the Sherlock Holmes series takes place.

According to Dias, Cumberbatch made sure that the cyclist was okay before giving the young man a hug.

Deliveroo later posted a thank you note for the actor on Twitter, saying: “Thank you Benedict Cumberbatch for your brave actions. Deliveroo riders are heroes – their safety is our priority and any violence against them is totally unacceptable. So on behalf of everyone at Deliveroo: thank you.”

The New York Times says that the assault was also confirmed by the local police department. Cumberbatch, reportedly told The Sun, “I did it out of, well, I had to, you know . . .” although he has declined further comment on the incident.

Your Cosmetics Contain Unsafe Ingredients: Congress May Finally Take Action–Here’s What You Need to Know

Currently, cosmetic manufacturers have no legal obligation in the U.S. to report health problems from their products, many of which contain known toxic ingredients—and they don’t need to prove the products’ safety before they are sold in stores.

Government regulators have never assessed the safety of any products on store shelves and, as a result, American consumers are ingesting potentially harmful ingredients through their skin without knowing it — ingredients like Propylparaben, Isobutane, and phthalates in perfumes and lotions, which contain hormone disruptors.

Do you use Pantene or Suave shampoo? Do you know what ingredients are in products you use from Dove, Oil of Olay, Aveeno, Lubriderm or Neutrogena?

Countless products contain concerning and unsafe ingredients, and a coalition of industry giants and Congressional Senators are poised to finally take action.

Last September, a coalition of companies dedicated to safer, more natural, personal care products descended on Washington, D.C. to support a new bipartisan bill, the Personal Care Products Safety Act (S. 1113), introduced by Democratic Senators Dianne Feinstein and Republican Susan Collins which demands more protective laws governing that industry.

Mainstream cosmetics companies including L’Oreal, Revlon, Proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Unilever, and Estee Lauder have confirmed support for the bill, which has attracted 15 co-sponsors in Congress.

RELATEDBan on Plastic Microbeads Finally Launched in the UK

Last month, the eldest Kardashian daughter, Kourtney, traveled to D.C. to push for the reform and tell Congress to “do its job”.

“Even going into a store to buy just about anything…you shouldn’t have to walk around aimlessly asking ‘Is this okay?’ ‘Is this not okay?’ Kardashian said during a briefing with New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone Jr. “Everybody should have the right to healthy products.”

Unlike in Europe and Canada, U.S. laws that do govern the $62 billion beauty industry in America are eight decades old with no rules requiring disclosure or adequate testing. While nearly 1,400 ingredients are banned from personal care products in Europe, the US has eliminated only 30. The Feinstein-Collins bill would require the FDA to investigate the safety of five cosmetics contaminants yearly, while requiring cosmetics makers to disclose ingredients, report incidents involving harm to health, and give the FDA authority to recall dangerous products.

In a recent study, the levels of potentially hormone-disrupting chemicals in the bodies of teenage girls plunged in just three days after they stopped using certain cosmetic products, shampoos and soaps that contained phthalates and parabens, according to Kim Harley, Ph.D., a researcher with the Center for Environmental Research and Children’s Health at the University of California – Berkeley.

Harley, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist, and her team from the Environmental Health Laboratory of the California Department of Public Heath enlisted volunteers, 100 Latina girls between 14 and 18 years old, to start using safer products. They pledged to refrain from using their regular personal care products for three days and instead to rely solely on products free of the suspected endocrine disruptors.

After three days, the teens’ urine tests showed significant decreases in the concentrations of parabens, preservatives widely used in cosmetics, shampoos and skin lotions (down 44%), and phthalates, common industrial plasticizers in nail polish and fragrances (down 27%). Particularly problematic is the fact that you won’t see ‘phthalates’ on the label, because it is hidden by using the word fragrance or parfum, unless the brand specifies it uses no artificial fragrance.

MORE5 Common Kitchen Products Are the Recipe for Great Skin and Hair

“Techniques available to consumers, such as choosing personal care products that are labeled to be free of phthalates, parabens, and oxybenzone, can significantly reduce personal exposure to these potentially endocrine-disrupting chemicals,” the study authors wrote. “Our study did not test products for the presence of these chemicals, but simply used techniques available to the average consumer, like reading labels.”

Also be aware that some “watchdog” websites can also be erroneous, according to the Scientific Advisory Board. Some synthetic preservatives are manmade, but still safe. Butylene Glycol, for instance, has been called a skin irritant, but according to the reputable Personal Care Products Council (PCPC), formerly known as the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association, it is a non-toxic, hypo-allergenic ingredient used in cosmetic and food preparations, with a well documented safety and usage record.

Some cosmetics companies, such as Arbonne, use more plant-based ingredients. They have been driving the safety of their products through independent testing and global governmental standards used by Europe. Their list of “not-allowed” ingredients includes more than 2,000 substances—even more than the 1,400 banned under EU law.

“All Arbonne products must have a 100% pass rate to be introduced to our line,” says the company website, which reports that they test ingredients’ safety through the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) and the watchdog group PCPC.

Other brands with no parabens or phthalates include Tata Harper, Dr. Hauschka, Aveda, and Acure. (Conversely, Pantene, Suave, Dove, Oil of Olay, Aveeno, Lubriderm, and Neutrogena, all sell some products formulated with those two ingredients.)

EARLIERFDA Finally Bans Antibacterial Soaps Containing Triclosan and 18 Other Chemicals

The new call to consider more closely the effects of chemicals on consumers also has far-reaching benefits for the environment, similar to recent moves to rid personal care products of microbeads. The endocrine disruptors that are flushed into waterways, have been been suspected by EPA scientists as causing malformed frogs and mutations in fish.

Because your entire family is using a myriad of products every day that may be contain harmful ingredients, it is worth your time—and Congresses—to investigate the safety of the cosmetics industry.

When Richard Jenkins was a kid, he was always raising his hand in class—so much so, that his peers began mocking him, tauntingly calling him “Harvard” to make him feel bad for participating.

An inner-city kid in Philadelphia, his family lost their home to foreclosure when he was in 6th grade. He and his two brothers spent the next two years moving in and out of homeless shelters and hotels across Florida and Tennessee.

As they struggled to find stability, the boy realized that a good education could be the means to escape such hardship. After that, he consistently earned good grades, even while fighting terrible migraine headaches that plagued him from all the stress.

“And then my dad had a heart attack,” Richard told WHYY. “In the summer of the eighth grade it got really bad. I got hospitalized; they put me on every medicine they had.”

“But I was eventually able to fight through it and get my work done, because at the end of the day, that was what was the most important to me.”

In the eleventh grade, things began to turn around after his mother urged him to apply to a boarding school for at-risk youth from single-parent homes. Once he was accepted, he immediately dove into dozens of school activities—all while earning high marks in academics.

RELATEDHomeless Are Getting 6-Figure Jobs in Poor Neighborhood Overrun by Tech Companies

With graduation on the horizon, Richard sent applications to a number of schools—but he had his eye on one Ivy League college in particular.

He set the tabs on his computer showing the best schools he had applied to: “I checked Penn—got wait-listed. I checked Yale—got denied.” Surely his favorite school would do the same, he thought.

Then he opened the last tab, and there was a video saying, ‘Welcome to the class of 2022.’”

LOOKHomeless Teen Goes From Living in Car to Becoming Stunning Wedding Photographer

“Tears started streaming down my face because I was so happy,” the 18-year-old told PEOPLE.com.

He, alone, had made it happen—overcoming the homelessness, poverty, and physical pain to receive a full scholarship to the famous university that was once his namesake: Harvard.

Richard graduated from his boarding school, Girard College, as the class valedictorian and plans to study computer science at Harvard, with a special interest in artificial intelligence.

MOREAfter Denver Hired Homeless People to Perform Day Labor For the City, More Than 100 Landed Regular Jobs

Though his full-ride scholarship covers tuition, room, and board, his godfather started a GoFundMe page to raise money for stuff like clothes “and a good tablet to store all his electronic books (he’s a confirmed bookworm).”

“Honestly, this kid, although he is poor, doesn’t need the help,” says the fundraising page. “He will work his way through college, pay for his expenses himself and won’t ask or need anyone’s help… Richard deserves a reward.”

In just a matter of days, after the news stories were posted online, the campaign surged past its original goal to raise $40,000.

Guy Makes Everybody Smile When He Picks Up His Girlfriend in Themed Cars Every Single Day

Forget chocolate and flowers; this guy is seriously setting the bar higher for what it means to show affection for a significant other.

For a few weeks back in April, Zach Doell was always there to pick up his girlfriend, Brianna Garcia, when she got out of her classes at the University of Louisiana. Instead of checking his phone with the spare time in the parking spot, he started thinking of goofy and amusing ways that he could surprise her after school.

At first, he was happy enough just to lay on the horn and lovingly scream her name from across the parking lot – but then he got a lot more creative.

Every day for Garcia, he started dressing up in different outfits, greeting her with a hilarious new theme. He even started decorating his car to reflect the costume.

WATCHGuy Takes Advantage of Toys ‘R’ Us Closing Sale to Make Giant Ball Pit For His Dog in His Hallway

One day he picked her up in an ‘ice cream truck’; on another day, he arrived in a pizza delivery car dressed as a slice of pepperoni pie; then, he showed up in a DIY Batmobile.

Even though Garcia would sometimes be a bit embarrassed, her boyfriend’s shenanigans soon became the highlight of everyone’s school day. One guy even offered up his old Prowler hot rod so Doell could keep up the fun routine.

“People kept begging me to keep doing it and posting the videos,” he told the Daily Advertiser. “They told me they looked forward to it every day.”

His efforts finally came to a crescendo after he was walking across a costume store parking lot to pick up a whistle for his NFL referee outfit and he saw a giant Oscar Mayer Weinermobile.

Even though he knew it was a long shot, he decided to ask the workers if they would agree to take it for a spin to the university.

“I thought it would be awesome, but there was no way it would happen,” Doell said. “But then I thought, ‘If I don’t act now, I’ll regret it.’”

Contrary to his doubts, the women running the vehicle were delighted to oblige.

With the Wienermobile as the cherry on top, Garcia eventually posted a compilation video of her boyfriend’s gag to social media where it was shared thousands of times. It even gave her the opportunity to get back at Doell.

When she was invited onto a local radio show, she collaborated with the hosts and pulled up in the university parking lot with the radio station’s van – and they of course laid on the horn.

“At first I was scared,” Doell told the Advertiser. “I had no idea who was honking. Usually, I’m the one who’s doing it. But then I was so impressed with her. That was the last thing I expected.”

Dog Runs Up to His Best Friend Every Day After School and His Excitement is Contagious

A dog is a man’s best friend, and every boy’s too—especially in this case.

Henrique Muraro is only 6 years old, but his immediate bond with Pipo the dog confirmed a doctor’s guess that it would be the best thing for him now, and for years to come.

Henrique’s doctor first encouraged the Muraro family to get a dog for the youngster because he sometimes has mobility issues that necessitates using a wheelchair. Though they had a few young pups audition for the role of Henrique’s companion, none of them really seemed to fit.

And then they found Pipo.

“One day my father’s cousin brought over Pipo,” Rodrigo Muraro, Henrique’s older brother, told The Dodo. “They became friends immediately and have been inseparable ever since. They spend all day together playing.”

Now, every day that the Brazilian boy gets home from school, Pipo sprints over to the bus so he can hop into his buddy’s lap and cover him in kisses.

Needless to say, Henrique’s resulting happiness could bring a tear to the eye of any hard-hearted cynic.

Though Pipo is not necessarily licensed as a therapy dog, his infectious love has already drastically improved the boy’s quality of life.

“Henrique’s motor skills have improved a lot,” Muraro told The Dodo, “and he’s much happier thanks to all of Pipo’s affection.”

New Brain Cancer Treatment for Terminal Patients is Shown to Be ‘Remarkably Promising’

Ordinarily, these brain cancer patients would not live longer than 17 months after their initial diagnosis – but after undergoing clinical trials for a customized immunotherapy vaccine, their survival rates are inspiring hope for the future.

The new study documents the exciting results of a phase three clinical trial that researched the effects of a new brain cancer vaccine on 331 patients with glioblastoma.

The patients, who were treated at 80 sites in four countries prepared for the trial by having surgeons remove as much of the brain tumor as possible. The surgeons would then mix bits of the tumor cells with immune cells from the patient as part of the vaccine, which – once it was delivered to the patient – would essentially train their immune system to target and fight the cancer cells.

100 of the patients who received the vaccine, which is called DCVax-L, were designated as “extended survivors” because they lived an astonishing 40.5 months on average after their diagnosis. The median survival rate of the patient population was just over 23 months.

RELATEDDrinking Baking Soda Could Be Cheap, Safe Way to Combat Autoimmune Disease, Says Scientists

“The overall patient population in the trial appears to live longer than we would typically see with current standard of care, and 30 percent of the patients have lived much longer than we would expect, given the typical course of this cancer,” said oncologist Jian L. Campian, one of the study’s authors.

And the best part about the vaccine? Researchers recorded very few side effects in the patients, which is notable compared to the standard treatments of glioblastoma, such as chemotherapy and radiation.

MOREMagnetic Brain Treatment Erases Suicidal Thoughts in Dramatic Portion of Depressed Patients, Study

“These results appear remarkably promising for a community of patients who have been given little hope for decades,” David Jenkinson, chief scientific officer for the Brain Tumour Charity, told the BBC.

The study was published in the Journal of Translational Medicine. The researchers say that they will be waiting until they finish collecting data to draw any final conclusions, but they declared that their findings are definitely cause for excitement.

Striking Photo Shows Baseball Fan Standing in the Rain to Hold Umbrella Over JROTC Member

This act of kindness last week on Memorial Day is still sparking appreciation and awe in the hearts of social media users.

The Atlanta Braves were preparing to play the New York Mets at SunTrust Park in Georgia when they called on everyone to pay a special salute to their special memorial for all of the US military members who were prisoners of war or missing in action.

The memorial stands as an empty chair in the stadium with a plaque that reads: “Since World War I, more than 92,000 American soldiers are unaccounted for. This unoccupied seat is dedicated to the memory of these brave men and woman and to the sacrifices made in serving this country.”

During the rainy game on Monday, a Marine Corps JROTC member stood at attention by the memorial during the salute. Not only that, a Braves fan took it upon himself to stand next to the young man and hold an umbrella over his head so he could stay dry for the homage.

This Couple Has Been Serving Free Lunches to Everyone in Town So People Feel Less Lonely

This story was submitted by Fran Lytle as a nomination to the Reader’s Digest “Top 10 Nicest Places in America” contest: a crowd-sourced effort to uncover corners of the country where people are still kind and respectful in an era of cultural and political divides. If you know of a community, business, or nonprofit where kindness prevails, then be sure to submit a testimony or anecdote here before the June 5th deadline. (GNN will be one of the judges!)

Every Monday, a large group of volunteers serves a free hot lunch to everyone in Chincoteague, Virginia.

Manna Cafe CI was started by Fran and Bill Lytle in 2017 as a means of combatting food insecurity and providing a comfortable place for elderly people and the rest of the community to find fellowship.

On the first Monday, the café served 16 guests. Currently, they’re serving over 350 guests each week. The lunch is freshly made by Bill, who always prepares meals that his family loves. It always includes a main course, vegetables, tossed green salad, and dessert.

RELATEDCafé That Hires and Feeds the Homeless Has Just Built a Village for Their Rough Sleeping Employees

Beginning in October 2017, Manna Cafe CI began delivering free hot lunches to people who are unable to leave their homes. The first time we did this, eight lunches were delivered. Now, Manna Cafe CI delivers almost 50 lunches every week, in addition to serving the hundreds of guests at the facility.

Stories about Manna Cafe

At Manna Cafe CI, a free hot lunch is served every Monday, including holidays. Since Christmas fell on a Monday in 2017, the Lytle’s wanted to have gifts for the children who would be enjoying lunch with their families on Christmas Day. They conducted a toy drive which resulted in more then 200 gifts for children, from toddlers to teens. When families arrived for lunch, children selected a present from the gift tables before enjoying lunch. The children were squealing with delight as they chose their gifts – and their joy was contagious.

Memorial Day also fell on a Monday, so the cafe served a free lunch then too. The lunch included hamburgers with all the fixings, potato salad, tossed green salad, and ice cream donated from the Island Creamery. One elderly guest shared that every Memorial Day, she hears the laughter and fun from a neighbor’s family party and she feels so lonely – but at Manna Cafe CI, she felt that she was at a community party.

In an interview with Cooperative Living Magazine, one guest shared that his home burned down two days before Christmas – but then he and his wife heard about Manna Cafe CI, and have been coming every Monday since then.

MOREInstead of Paying for Advertising, Church Abolishes $10M in Medical Debt For Local Families

“People have been so good to us!” his wife shared, mentioning how they received donated items for their new home.

The Loving Hearts and Hands table was also started by a Manna Cafe CI volunteer who wanted to give guests the opportunity to shop for items they may need by donating any money they could afford. It started in November 2017 to help guests purchase gifts for their loved ones during the holiday season. It’s evolved to act as a general store, where guests can shop for gifts or items they need every day. Any money that guests do give for their items are donated to the cafe to purchase food.

During the month of August, there are free school supplies so that children can choose from an assortment of items. The café also has a Take-1 table where guests can take free food and toiletries home to help them during the week. In 2017, we distributed over 300 coats to guests in need – and all of these things were donated by individuals and businesses in the community

The Lytle’s encourage youth to volunteer at the cafe so they can garner more experience to work with ministries like Manna Cafe CI in the future. In addition to the youth having fun meeting and interacting with the guests, the guests say that the place is full of extra joy when the youth participates.

One elderly guest shared, “I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve made so many new friends.”

The Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives awarded the Lytles the 2018 Good Samaritan Award. The cafe is totally funded by donations so spreading the word about it helps us to obtain funds which then help us to spread the light.

Watch Team of Teens Rush to the Rescue of Older Couple Trapped Under Their Car

A youth football team was on the way home from winning a game last weekend when they were faced with a situation that truly tested their teamwork—luckily, they triumphed over that as well.

Returning to Boise, Idaho from a tournament in California, the victorious Black Knights saw an SUV flip off the road in front of them.

The coach immediately pulled over and the team members, all of whom were 13 years or younger, rushed to rescue the couple who was trapped inside the car.

After they helped the man out of the car, they turned their attention to his wife, who was trapped by her seatbelt. One of the teens used a knife to cut the seatbelt free, and then the boys combined their strength (and harnessed their adrenaline) to lift the SUV off the ground so a coach could help the woman out of the wreckage.

The husband and wife, Allen and Maggie Hartman, are recovering from some broken ribs, but are otherwise grateful that the Black Knights became ‘white knights’ for a day.

There Are Many Paths to Success, But These Famous People All Took ‘The Third Door’

The Lesson: This guy has interviewed dozens of game-changers, and it has made him realize something very important: there is not one clear path to success. If you follow your passion, work hard, and trust yourself, you will find a way.

Notable Excerpt: “There’s all these books and TED talks that say, ‘The one key to success,’ and I always sort of roll my eyes when I see those headlines. But what I’ve realized … whether it was Steve Wozniak or Lady Gaga, [is that] although their lives are completely different on the outside, they have a common melody to their stories, to their narratives. The melody, to me, was sort of like how you get into a nightclub. There’s always three ways in. There’s the first door, where 99% of people wait in line, hoping to get it. Then the line curves around the block, and then there’s the second door — the VIP entrance where the billionaires and the celebrities go through. School and society tell you those are the only two ways in. You either wait your turn or you’re born into it. And what I realize … is there’s always always the third door and it’s the entrance where you jump out of line, run down the alley, bang on the door a hundred times, crack open the window, and go through the kitchen. There’s always a way. And every single person I talked to — again, whether it’s how Bill Gates sold his first piece of software or how Maya Angelou got her first book deal — they all took the third door.”

The Guest: 25-year-old Alex Banayan has had dozens of remarkable one-on-one interviews with trailblazers such as Bill Gates, Maya Angelou, Steve Wozniak, Jane Goodall, Larry King, Jessica Alba, Pitbull, Tim Ferriss, Quincy Jones, and many more. These interviews all contributed to the creation of his book, “The Third Door: The Wild Quest to Uncover How the World’s Most Successful People Launched Their Careers.”

The Host: Julie Pilat works in music and tech in Los Angeles while also participating in community activities. After growing up in radio, she missed interviewing people and decided to create The Idea Fountain: Life Changing Conversations where every month, she interviews someone who has changed her life.

A story of compassion from Clinton, Iowa

I recently experienced the most amazing act of kindness by someone who was shown the same act of kindness.

I lost my husband almost three years ago. I laid him to rest the day before our 30th wedding anniversary. We had no insurance, so putting together a funeral was a challenge and I had not been able to place a headstone on his grave.

Then just a few days ago, a headstone was placed on his grave by some neighbors, one of whom was Trinda Colschen.

RELATEDWoman Accidentally Buys the Same Book She Sold 5 Years Ago and Finds Mother’s Last Words

Trinda’s daughter and boyfriend were buried next to my husband after they passed away in a tragic motorcycle accident. The community came together and paid for their funerals and headstones. Aware that I had been unable to do so for a member of my own family, Trinda and a group of others decided to perform the same act of kindness to others.

This gift means the world to my family. I feel as though he can finally rest in peace.

First Ever 3D-Printed Cornea Could Restore Vision for Millions of People

For the first time ever, scientists have managed to 3D-print human corneas, which – once perfected – could restore vision to millions of people.

As the outermost layer of the human eye, the cornea plays an important role in focusing vision – but unfortunately, there is a significant shortage of corneas available for transplants, with 10 million people worldwide requiring surgery to prevent corneal blindness as a result of diseases such as trachoma, an infectious eye disorder.

In addition, almost 5 million people suffer total blindness due to corneal scarring caused by burns, lacerations, abrasion, or disease.

The proof-of-concept research, which was conducted in the UK by Newcastle University, was published in Experimental Eye Research. The study shows how stem cells (human corneal stromal cells) from a healthy donor cornea were mixed together with alginate and collagen to create a solution that could be printed – a ‘bio-ink’.

RELATEDDrinking Baking Soda Could Be Cheap, Safe Way to Combat Autoimmune Disease, Says Scientists

Using a simple low-cost 3D bio-printer, the bio-ink was successfully projected to make a human cornea – and it took less than 10 minutes to print.

The dimensions of the printed tissue were originally taken from an actual cornea. By scanning a patient’s eye, they could use the data to rapidly print a cornea which matched the size and shape.

“Many teams across the world have been chasing the ideal bio-ink to make this process feasible,” said Che Connon, the Newcastle University professor who led the work. “Our unique gel – a combination of alginate and collagen – keeps the stem cells alive whilst producing a material which is stiff enough to hold its shape but soft enough to be squeezed out the nozzle of a 3D printer.

MOREMagnetic Brain Treatment Erases Suicidal Thoughts in Dramatic Portion of Depressed Patients, Study

Connon added: “Our 3D printed corneas will now have to undergo further testing and it will be several years before we could be in the position where we are using them for transplants.

“However, what we have shown is that it is feasible to print corneas using coordinates taken from a patient eye and that this approach has potential to combat the world-wide shortage.”

Scientists Have Mapped Out the Best Strategy for Getting Over a Devastating Breakup

It can be hard to rationalize the intense and devastating emotions that come from a bad breakup. It may feel like the sky is falling; it may feel like you’re going to be alone forever; and it may feel like you’re never going to get over it.

But through science, all things are possible – even getting over an ex.

A team of researchers recently published a study on which cognitive strategies are the most effective methods for moving past a breakup. For the study, the team recruited the help of 24 people between the ages of 20 and 37. All of the heartbroken participants had been in a relationship for an average of 2 and a half years, and most of them were still in love with their ex; although, the causes for their breakups were varied.

Before the participants were passively shown pictures of their exes, the researchers asked them to use three different mental strategies to try and get over their exes. First, the participants were asked to focus on all of the negative things that they associated with their old partners so they would feel less upset about the breakup.

Secondly, they were asked to focus on feelings of acceptance towards their ex. By making peace with their emotions and acknowledging them without judgement, the participants might feel more accepting of themselves and the situation.

As a third strategy, they were asked to use mental distractions so they would be unable to focus entirely on the heartbreak.

Lastly, the researchers created a control strategy by asking the participants to do nothing when faced with the picture.

Based on the measurements of the participants’ neural activity, the study’s results showed that the negative reappraisal strategy worked best for reducing feelings of love and regret, but it also negatively affected the overall mood of the participants. The researchers suggest that this strategy could be used as an occasional regulator of emotional attachment – or, since the negative mental effects are likely to wear off through consistent use, it could be the most useful strategy.

The second strategy did not have any noticeable effect on their moods or feelings, but it did reduce their motivated attention towards their ex. The third strategy did not affect their feelings, but it did improve their overall moods.

“This suggests that in the context of a romantic break-up, negative reappraisal is an effective love down-regulation strategy, whereas distraction is an effective positive emotion up-regulation strategy,” says the researchers.

“Furthermore, all three strategies decreased motivated attention for the ex-partner, as indicated by a reduced amplitude of the late positive potential. This reduced motivated attention for the ex-partner could make it easier to deal with encounters of (reminders of) the ex-partner.”

So the next time you’re enduring a tricky heartbreak, the research shows that you can use negative reappraisal as an occasional method for weaning yourself off from those pesky feelings of longing – but if you want to face the heartbreak without the negative connotations, you can be confident that acceptance will make dealing with the situation steadily easier. Then, if you ever need to feel better, pursue the nearest distraction.

Though it was not mentioned in the study, our personal recommendation for distraction is a carton of ice cream and the nearest romantic comedy film.

Man Harnesses His Dog’s Love of Golf Balls for Fetch Game That Can Save Shelter Dogs Like Him

It has been seven years since Al Cooper first rescued Davos the pup from the local animal shelter – but the man says that it was mostly Davos who did the rescuing.

Cooper, who adopted Davos from the Humane Society in Albertville, Minnesota, had been getting over a battle with cancer when he adopted the little Bernese Mountain Dog. As they spent more time together, Cooper credits his furry companion as the reason he recovered so well after the disease. Their long walks through the park was an invaluable source of exercise and therapy – but then it eventually turned into something more.

Cooper started playing a game with Davos where he would hide a golf ball under one of three cups. After shuffling the cups around, he would give Davos a treat for successfully finding the ball.

Cooper then started taking him down to the Cedar Creek golf course so they could hunt through the weeds at the 13th hole and collect all the golf balls from failed shots.

Finally, Cooper got an idea – what if he could use Davos’s love of golf balls to help other dogs like him?

The dynamic duo now collects the balls, cleans them off, and sells them for 25 cents a pop at the golf course. All of the money that they raise is donated to the Animal Humane Society. Collectively, they’ve sold about 2,400 balls for $600 bucks.

Even though their price tag is pretty low, Cooper says that he doesn’t want golfers to feel bad about missing their shots because their losses are helping local shelter animals instead – and he still loves wandering the green with Davos.

“It’s a blast,” Cooper told WCCO. “It’s kind of like going on an Easter egg hunt. I feel like a kid out there eternally with him.”

Football Player Rescues Distressed Woman at the Airport So She Doesn’t Miss Her Flight

This guy isn’t just a Good Samaritan – he’s also a great football player.

A tight end player for the Arizona Cardinals is being hailed for rescuing a young traveler from a distressing situation at the airport’s ticket counter earlier this week.

Delilah Cassidy, who is a law school grad from Tempe, Arizona, was returning from a trip in Europe when she ran into an issue while boarding.

Cassidy had purchased an American Airlines ticket home when she realized that they had a new policy that required her to pay for her carry-on bags. Since she had just arrived in the US, all of her credit cards were being rejected because her banks did not realize she was back from her trip, and the baggage counter only accepted cards – not cash.

As the clerk told her she was about to miss her flight, Cassidy started to panic – and then a “guardian angel” stepped in to help.

The man volunteered to pay for the fee, and waved away Cassidy’s insistence at paying him back. Instead, he just told her to pay it forward.

The best part? The compassionate stranger was actually Jermaine Gresham, who was a tight end player for the Arizona Cardinals last season.

Cassidy, who happens to work in sports journalism, was delighted to discover that she had been rescued by a Cardinals player; she had not initially recognized Gresham because he had not been in the pro bowl since she was 16 years old.

Regardless, it’s probably safe to say that Gresham has made a new lifelong fan.
