This cute critter has not been sighted since 1986 – but it has finally resurfaced after scientists accidentally stumbled upon the critter’s hiding place last year.
The adorable kangaroo rat, named for its ability to hop about the arid lowlands where it is found, was listed as endangered by the Mexican government in 1994.
Then, a team of researchers from the San Diego Natural History Museum were in the field conducting routine monitoring of small mammal communities in Baja, California over the summer when they found four of the 5-inch rats.
Since none of the field workers had ever actually seen a kangaroo rat before, they had to consult previous field notes and descriptions to properly identify the critter.

Thanks to the research team’s discovery, members of the museum, local universities, and nonprofits will be working together to form a conservation plan for the species.
One of the researchers, museum mammalogist Scott Tremor, said: “Not only is this discovery a perfect example of the importance of good old-fashioned natural history field work, but we have the opportunity to develop a conservation plan based on our findings. The ability to take our research and turn it into tangible conservation efforts is thrilling. It is a commitment to preserving the uniqueness of the Baja California Peninsula.”

This is the third mammal that was thought to be extinct that museum staff have rediscovered in the Baja California Peninsula in the recent past: others include the high elevation California vole and the round-tail ground squirrel.
“These rediscoveries speak to hope and resilience in a changing world,” said Research Associate Sula Vanderplank. “We are learning so much about this animal and its ecology, and we’re delighted to know that it is permanently protected in the Valle Tranquilo Nature Reserve.”
The discovery was only recently published in the scientific journal Bulletin of the Southern California Academy of Sciences.

Some people have trouble dancing on dry land, let alone underwater – but this free diver managed to perform a stunningly beautiful 6-minute dance at the bottom of the world’s deepest swimming pool.
Free diver Julie Gautier, who is married to fellow diver Guillaume Néry, choreographed a gorgeous underwater dance routine at the bottom of Y40.

The routine was then made into a Vimeo short film called Ama. Since it was released and selected as a staff pick, it has been viewed hundreds of thousands of times.
Gautier describes the video by saying: “Ama is a silent film. It tells a story [that] everyone can interpret in their own way, based on their own experience. There is no imposition, only suggestions. I wanted to share my biggest pain in this life with this film. For this is not too crude, I covered it with grace. To make it not too heavy, I plunged it into the water. I dedicate this film to all the women of the world.”

The state of California is poised to become the first US state to make solar panels a mandatory addition to most newly-built homes.
The state’s Energy Commission will be voting on the legislation next week. If approved, then the measure will go into full effect for any to all houses, condos and apartment buildings up to three stories tall starting in 2020, though there will be exceptions for smaller houses or structures with abundant tree cover and shade.
According to CR Herro, vice president of environmental affairs at real estate development company Meritage Homes, the measure is expected to save the homeowner up to $60,000 over the course of 25 years.
The measure is also expected to contribute to the Energy Commission’s goal of making all newly-constructed residential buildings reach net zero energy by 2020, meaning that their solar output offsets their total gas and electricity usage. Newly-constructed commercial buildings will be projected to reach net zero energy by 2030.

California has already enjoyed a bright history with solar energy in the past – one year ago, the state received so much sunshine, energy prices dropped into the negative. And before that in 2016, California broke a solar record by producing enough solar energy to generate over 6 million homes, which is twice as much as the state was producing two years previously.
If approved, this newest piece of legislation would be yet another stepping stone for the Golden State’s fight against climate change.
“California is about to take a quantum leap in energy standards,” Bob Raymer, technical director for the California Building Industry Association, told The Mercury News.
“No other state in the nation mandates solar, and we are about to take that leap.”

Ken Jeong is much more than an actor and comedian – he also happens to be a licensed physician in the state of California.
And he recently used his medical expertise to help a woman who started having a seizure at one of his stand-up sets.
“It’s a wonderful story. It was such perfect timing: Ken just jumped from the stage to help,” audience member Heather Holmberg told USA Today.
Jeong had been in the middle of his routine at the Stand Up Live Comedy Club in Phoenix, Arizona on Saturday night when some of the audience members started yelling at him.

“He couldn’t see what was going on with the lights. He thought he was being heckled. He was playing with them from the stage for a second. And it was like, ‘No, no, no. We need you!’ He realized there was an issue, and he came over. It was a moment where time stands still. Someone was having a crisis. There was a hush over the room.”
According to Holmberg, the audience member was having some kind of seizure. As Jeong looked after her, an EMT who had been watching the show came over to help until paramedics arrive.
Once the woman was taken care of, Jeong hopped back on stage and within minutes was able to finish his set and get the tensed-up audience laughing once more. Not only that, but the woman who had been having the seizure was back on her feet by the end of the show.

It may seem too lucky to be true, but the Hangover star’s heroic gestures weren’t part of his act – though he no longer practices, Jeong graduated with a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine in 1995. After starring on the ABC show “Dr. Ken”, he gave up his medical career to pursue acting.
“And he was brilliant,” Holmberg says. “He’s a very funny man but you were able to see a side of him that’s very compassionate. You don’t often see that in comedians.”

While Austin Perine may not have the power to fly or shoot spiderwebs out of his hands, he does have a pretty incredible superhero identity.
Austin has created an entire superhero identity out of feeding the homeless.
Every week, the 4-year-old from Birmingham, Alabama uses his allowance money to buy a bag full of sandwiches and sodas so he can hand them out to the homeless – and he does it all while wearing a little caped uniform.
When asked what his superhero name is, he simply says: “President Austin”.

“That’s his idea of what the president is supposed to do,” TJ Perine, Austin’s father, told CBS News. “I was like, buddy, you have no idea, but hey, I’m going along with it.”
Only time well tell whether Austin actually ends up on the ballot in the future, but in the mean time, he already has a motto – and he says it to every single one of his sandwich recipients.
His motto is: “Don’t forget to share love”.

A British social entrepreneur wanted to sell bottles of water with 100% of the proceeds going to providing clean drinking water in Africa—but then, he realized plastic was not the way to go, and developed an awesome solution to his charity dilemma.
James Longcroft is the mastermind behind Choose Water: it will be sold in a biodegradable single-use water container made out of environmentally-friendly materials that can fully decompose in three weeks.
He vowed that the bottle itself had to be completely biodegradable, sustainable and non-toxic in anyway to both marine and land ecosystems, while at the same time still resemble a bottle, cost the same for the consumer and keep the water inside fresh for months. And, his idea may succeed, with the help of a crowdfunding campaign.
Longcroft and his team are currently raising money on Indiegogo to finance the manufacturing and distribution of the Choose Water bottle. Should their process proceed as planned, they hope to see it on grocery store shelves by the end of the year for about $1.20 per bottle—with all proceeds to charity.

The exterior of the container is made out of recycled paper that is coated with a waterproof liner. Though Longcroft can not immediately disclose the liner’s ingredients until his patents are cleared, he says that they are all affordable and sustainably sourced.
He also adds that the ingredients have even been shown to benefit the planet by “neutralizing soil acidity and providing nutrients to aquatic environments”.
His charity, Water For Africa, is dedicated to creating clean water projects throughout the continent.
Sounds like a win-win-win to us!

A 20-year-old in Marietta, Georgia has lived with his loving family since he was adopted as a baby. Although he was happy, he was always curious about his biological family.
For Christmas last year, Kieron Graham’s mother gave him a DNA test kit so he could explore his roots.
Upon hearing the results of the test, Kieron was shocked to discover that he had a biological brother: 29-year-old Vincent Ghant.
So he reached out to him on Facebook, and when they connected, the two became overwhelmed and cried with emotion.
Not only that, Kieron found out his long-lost brother lived just 15 minutes away—and attended the same college—Kennesaw State University—and both were studying the same major, political science!
“It was very surreal how much we looked alike,” Ghant told TODAY. “It was amazing. We just stared at each other and we both were laughing, giggling, and crying,” added Graham.
The two now hang out twice a week, and Kieron is getting to know the biological mother they both share. Their happy families even spent Christmas together and plan on taking a vacation together to Florida this year.
But Kieron’s ancestral adventures didn’t stop there.
When the test kit company, Ancestry DNA, heard about the brothers’ story, they reached out with an offer to fly them to Benin— to meet their African ancestors.

Though Ghant had a conflicting work schedule, Graham traveled to the country and discovered another surprising family connection: the two were related to the King of the capital city of Benin.
Graham met with the King and the new friends talked about their lives – an experience the young man says he will never forget—all because of a DNA test.
“I went from knowing nothing about my biological family, to meeting my birth family and getting to know about my ancestors.”

The Mouth Mobile has already served over 100 communities, giving away thousands of dollars worth of free oral treatment.

When an Indian man saw that an animal was in trouble, he turned to technology as a means of rescuing it from its plight.
27-year-old Milind Raj was taking a morning walk through Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh when he says that he heard a whimpering animal.
He looked into a nearby drain only to see that a puppy had gotten itself stuck amidst the trash and slime. Based on the drain’s condition, Raj believed that it would be too dangerous for any humans to maneuver the structure.
“The drain was so filthy, it was like a bog,” Raj told NDTV. “It was not possible for a human to rescue the puppy without endangering their own life, so I decided to put technology to the task.”

Raj, who makes a living out of building robots, then rushed to his lab and attached an AI-controlled bionic arm to a massive drone. After just 6 hours of tinkering, he brought the finished drone back to the drain to attempt a rescue.
With the engineer piloting the machine from outside the area, the drone flew into the drain and scooped up the puppy with the bionic arm. Since the arm had built-in sensors, he was able to exert just the right amount of pressure to safely pluck the pup from the drain and gently place it back down on the street.

Luckily, a local passerby was walking down the street when the rescue occurred. Stunned by the strange site of a puppy being picked up by a drone, she whipped out her phone to take a video which has garnered praise for Raj’s creative rescue.
The engineer has since adopted the puppy and aptly named it “Lifted”.

While baby dolls normally bring out the nurturing instincts in children, they are now producing joy in a whole new demographic.
A chain of assisted living facilities has started giving life-like baby dolls to dementia and Alzheimer’s patients as a means of alleviating stress and spurring positive emotions and memories about parenthood—and it works beautifully.
Placing dolls in their care has not only lifted the spirits of patients, but also given them a sense of self-worth, cut down on their tendency to wander off, and reduced the need for anxiety medication.
During the “Cuddle Therapy”, the doll is given to the resident to “care for” as part of their daily schedule. By holding, rocking, and cuddling the doll, the seniors can gain a deeper sense of purpose, which helps to reduce depression, agitation, and anxiety.
The therapy, currently offered in eight locations in four U.S. states, also encourages a sense of love and self-worth: The dolls help people with Alzheimer’s and dementia connect back into the world and express love. For those residents who are parents, it can bring back the happy memories of raising a family.
“My mother comes to life when she cuddles these baby dolls,” says April Hannewald, whose mother is currently a patient at the Poet’s Walk Memory Care Community in Nevada. “My mother is not very verbal any more, but when I’m pushing her around in a wheelchair, she immediately starts talking in full sentences when we pass the baby dolls, [saying things like] ‘Oh look! What are the babies doing?’”
Terra Brown, Executive Director at Poet’s Walk Warrenton, Virginia says: “Among the various forms of recreation therapy that our caregivers provide, we have found cuddle therapy is one of the simplest and most therapeutic. It is also one of the most successful as it gives our residents a of purpose that they long for.”
When a Preschool Opens Inside a Nursing Home All Heaven Breaks Loose
The “Cuddle Therapy” is currently being utilized at the Poet’s Walk Memory Care Communities at eight locations: In the Virginia cities of Leesburg, Fredericksburg, and Warrenton; in Texas facilities in Cedar Park, Round Rock, and San Antonio; in Henderson, Nevada; and Sarasota, Florida.
If you are interested in utilizing a similar treatment with a patient or nursing home, the Cuddle Therapy program recommends using dolls that don’t cry, to avoid stressful responses in patients. Beyond that, the dolls should be treated as if they were real babies, rather than toys.

“When I sit with my mom and she becomes fidgety and distracted, all I have to do is give her a baby doll and its puts a smile on her face. She talks to the baby and kisses its forehead often,” says Hannewald. “Of all of the many activities Poet’s Walk offers to their memory care residents, cuddle therapy is as good as it gets.”

While the internet is also used for cute cat videos and keeping in touch with distant relatives, Tia Freeman sped down the information highway to find guidance during an emergency DIY childbirth.
Oddly, the 22-year-old Air Force employee from Nashville did not even find out she was pregnant until her third trimester. Since she was already set to fly to Germany in early March, she prayed that she would not go into labor during the trip.
Unfortunately, Freeman was in the middle of a layover flight to Istanbul when she started to feel abdominal pain. Thinking it was just the airplane food, she did not even guess that she was going into labor until she landed in the Turkish city.
Freeman was in quite the dilemma – not only was she unsure whether her insurance would cover a trip to the hospital, she wasn’t sure how many people spoke English in the foreign city.
She then decided to make sure that she was actually going into labor, so she took a cab to her hotel room.
Record Baby: 26-Year-old Gives Birth to Girl Who Was Frozen 24 Years Ago
“When I got to my hotel room I realized just how quickly he was coming,” said Freeman, according to CTV News. “I figured I just have to do this.”
For starters, she ran a Google search on how to deliver a baby. With the internet’s resources at her disposal, she opted for a water delivery “to help contain the mess a bit”.
Though she says that the contractions were painful, she watched YouTube videos on breathing techniques and focused on getting through the delivery.
10-Year-old Boy Delivers His Baby Brother – and Saves His Life
After successfully delivering her son, she quickly read over some articles on how to take care of the afterbirth and the umbilical cord. A WikiHow article recommended using scissors and clamps to cut the cord, neither of which she had.
The young Air Force worker sterilized her shoelaces in a pot of boiling water and used them as clamps before using her pocket knife to cut the cord.
“I did a mighty fine job if I say so myself,” she wrote in a tweet.
The very next day, she contacted the US Embassy and arranged for the baby’s birth certificate and citizenship. Freeman and her son were both checked over by a doctor and certified as healthy. Though the consulate required her to stay in Turkey for another two weeks before the child was fit to fly, Freeman says that Turkish citizens were very kind to her.
Freeman decided to pay homage to the baby’s unusual birth by giving her son a Turkish middle name: Xavier Ata Freeman.
The baby is now being “spoiled endlessly” by Freeman’s adoring family.

After decades of hard work, a Canadian man was finally rewarded with the best birthday gift ever.
On a fateful day last week, Ping Kuen Shum was not only in high spirits because it was his birthday – it was also his last day of work before heading into retirement.
Feeling lucky from the milestones, he stopped at a convenience store in Richmond, British Columbia to buy a lottery ticket.
Astonishingly, it turned out to be the winning ticket, earning him a $1.5 million jackpot because he managed to match all 6 numbers to the winning combination.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation says that the likelihood of this happening is roughly 1 in 13,983,816.

As a means of celebrating his windfall, Shum says that he took his family out for dinner and now plans on taking them all to China for a vacation.

Representatives of New Zealand have just promised to get every homeless citizen off the cold streets and into cozy shelters before winter rolls around.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and housing minister Phil Twyford announced the launch of their $100 million emergency housing package on Friday.
“We’re pulling out all the stops to support people in need and urgently increase housing supply this winter,” said Twyford. “Our government will make sure everyone is helped to find warm, dry housing.”
With the cold season just around the corner in the southern hemisphere, the government has 4 weeks to get the country’s 40,000 homeless people into proper shelters, housing, and facilities.
According to The Guardian, New Zealand officials hope to achieve this goal by enlisting the help of private citizens with suitable seasonal housing, “such as shearers quarters, private rental properties, motor camps, and maraes.”
They have also instructed shelters and similar facilities to allow for more flexible admission.
“As soon as we came into government we knew we wouldn’t be able to physically build the houses we’d need by May, when winter was really starting to bite,” says Ardern in her Facebook Live announcement.
“So we acknowledge this is emergency… but we couldn’t stand by and see people in cars or completely unsuitable housing in the meantime.”

Imagine if you could have a cheap, nutritious food source in your home that required no daily maintenance. While it may sound too good to be true, that is exactly what this company is doing.
As a means of tackling world hunger, innovative agricultural company Aggressively Organic has developed “Plant Pods”: a micro-gardening system that can grow more lettuce in a 10-foot room than on a half-acre of farmland.
The Plant Pods are built with a hydroponics-based system that revolves around soil-less gardening. This means that owners only need to water the pods every few weeks.
Not only is this beneficial for busy people who forget to water their plants, but it is also better for the environment. Planting lettuce in the ground requires roughly 25 gallons of water to grow; the pods, on the other hand, only require about 16 ounces.

While hydroponics equipment can often cost thousands of dollars, the pods have been designed so that they cost “less than the price of a large pizza”.
The company’s website says: “Since our goal is to end food insecurity, we had to make a system that literally anyone can afford and use. There are no pumps, no electricity required, very little plastic, and every aspect of our company is sustainable. This website is even hosted on a server powered by wind.”
The pods are built using cardboard liners, a coconut coir disc in which seeds are planted, reusable netted cups to hold the plant, and a nutrient solution that nourishes the greenery.

In addition to being cheap to maintain and produce, the pod food is also more nutritious.
“Lettuce looses 90% of it’s nutrition within 24 hours of being harvested,” says the company. “Now you can harvest when hungry and know that you’re getting the most nutrition from your food. We call this plant-to-plate freshness.”

Most parents would go to the ends of the Earth to save their child – and Rene Nel is no exception.
Her daughter Linke was just 14 months old when she came down with a case of pneumonia that antibiotics could not treat. At the time of her illness, their family had been living on a rural farm in South Africa. But when the test results came back, doctors immediately told them to drive to the nearest hospital, which was about 4 hours away.
Linke was then diagnosed with leukemia. After six months of chemotherapy, it was around Christmas that the doctors told the family that Linke would not live to see her second birthday.
Rene, on the other hand, refused to believe it.

“As any parent would, when you’re told your child is going to die, I just couldn’t accept that, I thought I’d fight with everything until the end and there has to be something out there, there has to be some treatment that could help Linke,” the mother told Weekend Today.
She then ran a Google search for treatments that could help her daughter. She emailed 130 doctors until – 24 hours later – she received a response from Dr. Luciano Dalla-Pozza at Westmead Hospital, in Sydney, Australia telling her to get on a plane and come to the hospital.
Even though it was a hard decision, Rene, her husband, and their three other children all moved to Australia so that Linke could be enrolled in a clinical trial for an experimental therapy.

After just one month of treatment, Linke was in remission. Not only that, but she just celebrated her birthday as a healthy 6-year-old girl.
“I see life in a total different way,’’ says Rene. “I’m thankful for the smallest things, even the naughty bits. Every day in the life of Linke is remarkable. Just the way she jumps up and does a ballet turn, and a little curtsy afterwards, the thankfulness you have towards that is just…it’s an everyday thing.’’
