Heartfelt Letter From 5-Year-old Causes Restaurant Chain to Swap Plastic Straws for Paper

A 5-year-old girl is being hailed for influencing a restaurant chain to ditch single-use plastic straws in favor of biodegradable paper alternatives, all thanks to a heartfelt letter that she sent to the company.

Pizza Express, an Italian food restaurant with over 470 branches worldwide, recently announced their decision to drop the wasteful utensils on their Facebook page.

The company’s statement was posted alongside a photo of a letter from Ava: a young customer who wrote to Pizza Express asking if they could stop giving away straws at their restaurants.

Ava’s letter read: “I am writing to you to ask if you could stop using plastic straws because they are very bad for animals. They can get stuck in their mouths and noses. Could you only use straws if people ask for them because I don’t want any animals to get sick.”

A Pizza Express spokesperson responded to the letter, saying:

“We pride ourselves on listening to our customers, so when Ava, aged five, sent us a letter asking us to stop putting plastic straws in her drink because ‘they are very bad for animals’, it spurred us to make a change.

“We are now phasing out single-use plastic straws from all our 470+ restaurants from this summer, and we’ll be replacing them with biodegradable and recyclable paper versions.”

Then, as a means of verifying that the letter was real, the company wrote a follow-up statement reading: “For the record, Ava’s letter is genuine and it’s truly amazing and wonderful that somebody so young wrote to us with such a caring and compassionate message.”

Supportive Friends Come Together With Wine and Wedding Dresses For ‘Divorce Party’

Upon finding out that her divorce was about to be finalized in December, Nicole Niesner was prepared to endure a lonely night in by herself. Her friends, on the other hand, were not about to let that happen.

The 36-year-old resident of Saskatchewan came home from work one day only to be surprised by a bunch of her gal pals showing up at her house with wedding dresses in hand for a “divorce party”.

The friends, who are all still married, donned the gowns as a means of taking some of the sting out of Niesner’s divorce.

Niesner herself dug her own dress out of her basement so the gang could spend the night drinking wine and reminiscing on the ups and downs of their own marriages.

“[We] kept it really positive, drank some wine, ate some food. [The wedding dresses] were on most of the time, everybody was really digging that,” Niesner told Inside Edition. “Even though I am okay with being divorced, it just lifted me up and reminded me that I am loved and that I have lots of great people in my life.”

Don’t Wait For Your Best Friend to Pass: Learn From Henry and Shift to a Life That Fulfills You

My friend Henry and I grew up not far from each other in the same town. He was one of my closest friends.

Our lives seemed to run almost in parallel. Perhaps the only thing we differed on was his almost fanatical approach to fitness. He liked to run 5 miles each morning, and was extremely careful about his diet. I, on the other hand preferred my morning snooze, and was not so discerning about what I ate as long as it tasted good.

Henry was always trying to get me to go for a Sunday morning run with him, and on one such weekend, Henry was outside my door trying to get me to come out. I was in no mood to leave my bed that morning and convinced him to go on ahead, promising to meet him at our usual spot for breakfast in an hour.

That was the last I saw of him. When I went to our breakfast spot later, I found out that Henry had collapsed halfway through his run because of a massive heart attack and was dead before help arrived. A man who for the best part of his life was a fitness fanatic, who was at the prime of his life with a young wife and child, and had so much to look forward to, was suddenly and unexpectedly gone. He was 34.

RELATEDMeditation and Mindfulness Tips to Combat Everyday Worries and Life’s Big Questions

Sometime later, as I emerged from my own grief and sorrow, I thought wistfully of the plans Henry and I had made for our future and how he would now never get around to them — and that’s when the realization hit me: if I didn’t do something with the time I have now, it may be too late. Who is to say how much time I have left?

I was in my early 30s, comfortable with my 9 to 5 job. I had a modest house in the suburbs and a wonderful wife. I was coasting along. I knew there was more to life, and that I could be doing a lot more with my talents and abilities, but I had settled into a comfort zone.

Henry’s passing shook me from my stupor. I felt a sense of urgency begin to rise within me—and pull me out of the quicksand of mediocrity.

I knew then that I should not waste the time I have left. I flipped open the journal in which I had listed all the things I thought were my priorities at the time. As I reviewed that list in the light of my friend’s death, I came to terms with the fact that if I had just a month to live, that list would be meaningless.

MOREThis is How Good You Feel When You Do Good For Others

Things I had originally marked as priority didn’t seem that important anymore. Having a bucket list is great, and its fun to cross off new adventures, but my life was not going to be about just ticking a box anymore. My short term and long term goals shifted. Spending time with my family and ensuring their future happiness became my number one prerogative.

I knew that it was time to start focusing on living my purpose, on creating a legacy, and having a positive impact on the world. I realized I had to make the most of every day and make each day count. The new found sense of urgency pushed me to hit the reset button on my life. I walked away from my job and found the courage to pursue entrepreneurship full-time. I took a leap of faith into uncharted waters and it proved to be the best decision I ever made.

People forget how transient life is. They think they have all the time in the world to go after their dreams and allow themselves to sink into a comfort zone. The comfort zone builds up gradually. You do not just wake up one morning and find yourself right in the midst of it. It is a very slow, velvety, quicksand. It has a cocoon-like effect that lulls you into a sense of false security. The hunger, the anger, and the energy that drives you to take risks, that makes you challenge preconceived notions, that forces you to seek out new horizons constantly, suddenly dissolves into this velvety zone that you are so safely snuggled into. What you do not realize is that this quicksand snuggles you just as it suffocates you.

LOOKEinstein’s Theory of Happy Living Emerges in a Note Uncovered After 95 Years

I was unceremoniously pulled out of the quicksand of my comfort zone by the death of my friend. While that was a rude (and much needed) wake up call in my life, and I have made sure to never fall back into it again, I confess that the comfort zone still creeps up on me every now and then.

If you have been putting off something for later, I am here to remind you that there may not be a ‘later’. All you have is now. It’s never too late to hit the reset button. Begin by taking stock of your life and making a priority list of things that mean the most to you. Map your goals with the legacy you want to leave. Break it down into smaller goals and launch into it immediately. Work towards it every single day.

Your entire being will rebel against it and that’s okay. The truth is that if you place too much attention on those feelings and wait for the perfect time to start, you’ll probably never start. Remember, all you have is now.

Men on Norway’s Soccer Team Take Wage Cut So Women Players Earn Equal Pay (They Already Win More)

The Norwegian men’s national soccer team just took a major pay cut so their female counterparts could be paid the same amount.

Up until this year, the male team earned 6.55 million kroner ($818,000) in contrast to the women’s annual income of 3.1 million kroner ($387,000). Since the men’s team signed an equal-pay agreement in December, both teams are being paid equally— 6 million kroner ($750,000).

Since the men’s team has earned much of its income from commercial sponsorships – despite the fact that the team consistently performs worse than the female team in international competition – they will be donating the funds necessary for the women’s wages to rise.

The Scandinavian country believes itself to be the first nation to ever mandate equal pay for their gendered teams.

“It is very positive that Norway is a pioneer,” said Pal Bjerketvedt, NFF’s Secretary General, according to the Independent. “At the same time, this is a recognition for women’s football in general, and it’s amazing to see how much this means to the players and what enormous attention the issue has gained internationally.”

Norwegian soccer player Caroline Graham Hansen wrote a note to the men’s team on Instagram reading: “Thank you for making this step for female athletes. For showing equality and for helping us all, making it a bit easier, to chase our dreams. To make them come true!”

When Man Discovers Sea Lion Loves to Fetch, He Plays With the Critter For Two Hours

John Aravosis says that he has been going to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington D.C. for 30 years now – but he was never aware of how much one of the sea lions loved to play fetch.

According to a video that he posted on YouTube in early January, Aravosis discovered the critter’s hobby when he saw someone trailing their finger along the plexiglass.

The sea lion followed the person’s hand and twirled every time they traced a circle. Then it pointed its nose towards a little stick that was laying on the other side of the aquarium glass.

Aravosis started throwing the stick from one side of the window, to the other – and every time he did, the sea lion would swim after the twig and do a flip.

“Until this week, I thought the sea lions simply swam by quickly and that was that,” said the digital strategist. “Well, apparently, if you get the right sea lion, he likes to play virtual fetch with a stick, just like a dog! I discovered this yesterday afternoon, and spent nearly two hours playing with this one sea lion.”

“I decided to go back today to try to shoot some video of our play time, and that’s what you’re watching here. It was one of the most amazing zoo, and animal, experiences of my life,” he added.

These Dogs Are Trained to Detect the Smell of Parkinson’s Just by Sniffing a Tee Shirt

Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative disorder that currently has no objectively approved screening method. Doctors are only able to make a diagnosis by interviewing the patient and examining their medical history – and this leaves plenty of room for error and inaccuracies.

A team of dogs on San Juan Island in Washington, however, could identify hundreds of Parkinson’s patients simply by using their noses.

The Parkinson’s Canine Detection Project is an initiative that trains 20 different pups to sniff out the disease on peoples’ shirts. The shirts – or “samples”, as they’re called – are sent to the initiative’s training center where the dogs are allowed to sniff the samples and determine whether they belong to a patient who is at risk for Parkinson’s.

The project’s volunteers found that by exposing the samples to multiple trained dogs for a consensus, the results were accurate—at the end of 2017 alone, the hounds sniffed out results that had a 90% accuracy of diagnosis.

LOOKParkinson’s Pen For Patients Who Want to Keep Writing Christmas Cards

The project was first started in 2016 when Joy Milne, a Scottish woman whose husband passed away from Parkinson’s six years ago, found that she was able to smell the disease on her husband before he was ever officially diagnosed.

Once Milne’s story was broadcasted by news outlets around the world, Lisa Holt, the program director of Parkinson’s Alert Dogs (PADS), got the idea to train canines to develop the same kind of ability.

“All dogs have the ability, but successful dogs usually display high drive for the work,” Holt told Good News Network. “There is one other program for training dogs to detect Parkinson’s Disease in the U.K. We are the only program in the United States.”

RELATEDWoman Can Smell Parkinson’s Disease, May Lead To Breakthrough For Detection

In a scientific study of Milne’s astonishing abilities, researchers found that she was best able to smell the disease’s “oily” odor around the neck and back regions of a tee shirt. She was also better at detecting the scent when the patient had been wearing a shirt made out of 100% cotton.

By replicating the methods used by Milne, Holt found that the PADs experienced similar results.

Being able to diagnose Parkinson’s disease in its early stages has a multitude of benefits. According to Holt, “a growing body of evidence from medical literature describes numerous advantages that may be associated with early therapeutic intervention”, such as reduced symptoms, delay of medication side effects, slowed disease progression, and decreased chance of developing a tolerance for the treatment.

While Holt and the PADS team continues to hone the accuracy and technique of the pups, they hope that the project’s development will result in an innovative new way of screening Parkinson’s patients – and eventually saving lives.

Twitter Cracks Up When Dad Accidentally Asks A-List Celebrity to Step Out of His Photo With Matthew Broderick

LISTEN to our GNN Good News Guru tell the story on the Ellen K. radio show—or continue reading…

It’s not every day that your dad gets to take a picture of his favorite celebrity standing next to his daughter – and it’s even rarer for him to snub another A-lister in the process.

But that’s exactly what happened to an excited father when he asked Matthew Broderick to take a photo with his daughter a few years ago.

A Twitter user jumped on social media earlier this week to tell the amusing story of how his friend had been on vacation with his family in Montauk, New York when he ran into the star of Ferris Bueller and asked him for a favor.

“My friend politely asks Broderick if he will take a photo with his daughter. Broderick gallantly obliges, but this is a once in a lifetime photo and he wants it to be just right…”

“…so he asks Broderick’s friend to kind of move to the side a bit out of frame, and he moves a bit. And my friend says, just a little more, a little more, keeps doing the nudging motion with his hand. Lots of nudging. Okay he wont move any farther, fine, we can crop him out…”

RELATEDPeople Are Posting Stories of Celebrities Being Nice to Them and it is Incredibly Refreshing

“…and they take the picture and go back to the car all big grins to the rest of the family, who all shout in unison WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU??”

Why was the family so up in arms about the incident? Well, it’s because the guy who was being urged to get out of the frame was none other than comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld.

Since the tweet went public, commenters have been in hysterics over the accidental snub… not that there’s anything wrong with that.

6 Tips On How to Tailgate in Frigid Cold Weather For the Big Game

On Sunday, Feb. 4, millions of viewers will be tuning in to watch the Eagles and the Patriots face off in the U.S. Bank Stadium.

Tensions will be high, and friendships and family ties will be tested. Unfortunately, for those who’ll be tailgating nearby, the weather in Minneapolis, Minnesota, will be less than ideal for a football smack down. But, don’t let the cold temperature stand in the way of your tailgating experience – here are six tips from the Red Cross to help you tailgate safely.

1. STAY WARM
The temperature during the game this Sunday is currently predicted to be around 9 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re tailgating near the stadium, it’s important that you dress appropriately. We encourage you to dress in layers so you can easily adapt to any changes in the weather – and don’t forget mittens or gloves, and a hat. Also, be sure to monitor weather reports, seek shelter if any severe weather warnings are issued, and call 9-1-1 for any cold weather emergencies.

2. STAY HYDRATED
Hunting for the perfect tailgate location, walking to the stadium from a distant parking space and cheering at the top of your lungs for your favorite team can take a toll on you. Before you head out for the game, make sure everyone in your group packs some water to stay hydrated before, during and after the game.

WATCHFans Pull Off Incredible Hat Trick to Return Item Dropped From 8 Floors Up

3. TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST THE FLU
Large crowds mean a lot of germs. Because so many people are gathering together in one place, it’ll be crucial for you to take precautions against the flu. To help get rid of germs, pack an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that you can use on the go. Wash your hands frequently throughout the day, and use a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow. Try to minimize contact with sick people nearby and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

4. COMMUNICATE AND STAY TOGETHER
Before you leave, let someone know where you are going, the route you plan to take and when you expect to get there. You don’t want to spend time searching for members of your group during or after the game. To avoid confusion, agree on a place where your group can meet in case someone gets lost and you don’t have cell service. Keep your group updated on your whereabouts and have a couple of different methods of communications available to you other than your cell phone.

LOOKCubs Fans Help Elderly Man With Cancer Enjoy Playoff Game: ‘I just love this!’

5. CREATE AN EXIT STRATEGY
Before you settle down at your tailgate, develop an exit strategy with your group. In the event of an emergency, you’ll need to get out of harm’s way as quickly as possible, so determining where the best emergency exit, shelters and routes are in advance will save you a lot of time and stress. It’s always better to be prepared.

6. BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS
Although you’ll be paying close attention to the game, make sure you keep an eye on your surroundings and don’t be afraid to report suspicious activities, packages or people.

You can find more information about these safety tips and others that may be helpful before, during, and after the game by downloading the Red Cross Emergency and First Aid Apps.

The 4 Tendencies: Which one are you? The Upholder, Questioner, Obliger or Rebel

The Lesson: When researching happiness and how people develop habits to make a better life, Gretchen Rubin discovered that people fall into one of four dominant patterns – the upholder, the obliger, the questioner or the rebel. This behavioral tendency will influence your ability to develop habits with ease or difficulty because of how you respond to expectations. Do you embrace the rules? Do you resist? Do you need solid reasons before complying? Do you only comply when someone else is there to hold you accountable? Understanding your tendency towards expectations can help you manage your whole life in a more insightful, productive way—and it’s quite handy when communicating with or managing others (like our children) because now you know their pattern.

Notable Excerpt: “Upholders readily meet outer and inner expectations—they meet the work deadline, they keep the New Year’s resolution without much fuss… Questioners question all expectations—they’ll do it if they think it makes sense. They hate anything arbitrary or inefficient. Obligers readily meet outer expectations, but they struggle to meet inner expectations. The largest number of men and women fall into this category. Rebels resist all expectations—they want to do what they want, when they want, in their own time.”

Instead of Arguing Online, Political Foes Are Coming Together Over Food to ‘Make America Dinner Again’

When the presidential race came to an end in November 2016, Justine Lee and Tria Chang were both saddened by the amount of political divisiveness that showed up on their social media news feed.

Instead of joining in on the online arguments, however, the friends wanted to bring people together in person so they could lay their feelings and opinions out on the table – literally.

Chang and Lee are the masterminds behind Make America Dinner Again (MADA): a project that asks strangers from both sides of the political aisle to sit down and have dinner together.

The project’s website reads: “There are many avenues to protest, to donate, to fight, to be heard; Make America Dinner Again is an avenue to listen. These small dinners consist of respectful conversation, guided activities, and delicious food shared among 6-10 guests who have differing political viewpoints, and our country’s best interests at heart.”

LOOKHuman Library Lets You Check Out People, Aims to Foster Diversity

Since Chang and Lee first launched the initiative, they have helped orchestrate 13 dinners across the country – from California to Washington DC. As more and more people have reached out to the duo about hosting MADA meals of their own, the group has taken to GoFundMe to help finance the dinners.

The San Francisco-based buddies originally paid for the first dinner out of pocket, which cost roughly $250. In order to pay for future MADA parties, their campaign has raised over $2,800 since September.

If you like the idea of hosting a MADA dinner and would like a hand in covering the costs, you can apply for financial reimbursement – or, if you’re confident enough to pay for your own party, Chang and Lee have also published a handy guide on how to host a MADA dinner on their website.

Cancer ‘Vaccine’ Eliminates 97% of Tumors With Amazing Success – Human Trials Next

Curing cancer may soon be as simple as going to the doctor and getting a shot, according to this new study.

Injecting minute amounts of two immune-stimulating agents directly into solid tumors in mice can eliminate all traces of cancer in the animals, including distant, untreated metastases. The approach works for many different types of cancers, including those that arise spontaneously.

The researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine believe the local application of very small amounts of the agents could serve as a rapid and relatively inexpensive cancer therapy that is unlikely to cause the adverse side effects often seen with body-wide immune stimulation.

“When we use these two agents together, we see the elimination of tumors all over the body,” said Ronald Levy, professor of oncology. “This approach bypasses the need to identify tumor-specific immune targets and doesn’t require wholesale activation of the immune system or customization of a patient’s immune cells.”

RELATEDIn World First, Children Given New Ears Grown From Their Own Cells

One agent is currently already approved for use in humans; the other has been tested for human use in several unrelated clinical trials. A clinical trial was launched in January to test the effect of the treatment in patients with lymphoma.

Levy, who is the senior author of the study, is also a pioneer in the field of cancer immunotherapy. Many other kinds of immunotherapy that have been used to treat cancer have been successful, but they each have downsides — from difficult-to-handle side effects to high-cost and lengthy preparation or treatment times.

“All of these immunotherapy advances are changing medical practice,” Levy said. “Our approach uses a one-time application of very small amounts of two agents to stimulate the immune cells only within the tumor itself. In the mice, we saw amazing, body-wide effects, including the elimination of tumors all over the animal.”

MOREWatching Birds Near Your Home is Good For Your Mental Health

Cancers often exist in a strange kind of limbo with regard to the immune system. Immune cells like T cells recognize the abnormal proteins often present on cancer cells and infiltrate to attack the tumor. However, as the tumor grows, it often devises ways to suppress the activity of the T cells.

Levy’s method works to reactivate the cancer-specific T cells by injecting microgram amounts of two agents directly into the tumor site. (A microgram is one-millionth of a gram). One, a short stretch of DNA called a CpG oligonucleotide, works with other nearby immune cells to amplify the expression of an activating receptor called OX40 on the surface of the T cells. The other, an antibody that binds to OX40, activates the T cells to lead the charge against the cancer cells. Because the two agents are injected directly into the tumor, only T cells that have infiltrated it are activated. In effect, these T cells are “prescreened” by the body to recognize only cancer-specific proteins.

Some of these tumor-specific, activated T cells then leave the original tumor to find and destroy other identical tumors throughout the body.

LOOKWoman Can Smell Parkinson’s Disease, May Lead To Breakthrough For Detection

The approach worked startlingly well in laboratory mice with transplanted mouse lymphoma tumors in two sites on their bodies. Injecting one tumor site with the two agents caused the regression not just of the treated tumor, but also of the second, untreated tumor. In this way, 87 of 90 mice were cured of the cancer. Although the cancer recurred in three of the mice, the tumors again regressed after a second treatment. The researchers saw similar results in mice bearing breast, colon and melanoma tumors.

Mice genetically engineered to spontaneously develop breast cancers in all 10 of their mammary pads also responded to the treatment. Treating the first tumor that arose often prevented the occurrence of future tumors and significantly increased the animals’ life span, the researchers found.

Finally, Sagiv-Barfi explored the specificity of the T cells by transplanting two types of tumors into the mice. She transplanted the same lymphoma cancer cells in two locations, and she transplanted a colon cancer cell line in a third location. Treatment of one of the lymphoma sites caused the regression of both lymphoma tumors but did not affect the growth of the colon cancer cells.

CHECK OUT: World’s First ‘Mental Health Ambulance’ is Helping Hundreds of People in Sweden

“This is a very targeted approach,” Levy said. “Only the tumor that shares the protein targets displayed by the treated site is affected. We’re attacking specific targets without having to identify exactly what proteins the T cells are recognizing.”

The current clinical trial is expected to recruit about 15 human patients with low-grade lymphoma. If successful, Levy believes the treatment could be useful for many tumor types. He envisions a future in which clinicians inject the two agents into solid tumors in humans prior to surgical removal of the cancer as a way to prevent recurrence due to unidentified metastases or lingering cancer cells, or even to head off the development of future tumors that arise due to genetic mutations.

“I don’t think there’s a limit to the type of tumor we could potentially treat, as long as it has been infiltrated by the immune system,” Levy said.

Couple Can’t Contain Their Laughter When Wife Accidentally Sends Beauty Product Flying

When JW Godwin tied the knot with his wife KC, he vowed to love her in sickness and in health. Although, he may not have guessed that he would also be loving her “in charcoal” as well.

Last week, the happy couple was at their home in Cecil, Alabama when JW heard his wife scream from upstairs and say that she had had an accident.

When he climbed the stairs, however, he heard KC laughing from inside the bathroom.

He then took out his phone and started recording – and it’s a good thing he did, because the results are hilarious.

JW walks in on his wife covered head to toe in black charcoal powder, and she can’t stop giggling over her clumsiness.

When asked what happened, she simply says that she had been trying to open the jar of charcoal teeth whitener when it sprayed all over the bathroom.

JW’s witty response? He says: “Well, your teeth DO look white.”

All 955 Gold Miners Who Were Trapped Underground Have Been Rescued

All 955 South African gold miners who were trapped underground for 30 hours this week have reportedly been rescued and treated for dehydration.

The workers were trapped in the Beatrix gold mine of Theunissen after a massive storm caused a power outage in the area. Since the only way in and out of the tunnel is by using an electronic lift, the miners were stuck 3,200 feet (1,000 meters) down without any means of escape since Wednesday.

Once engineers were able to restore power to the lift, the miners were brought back to the surface in groups.

Ambulance workers who were waiting on site to treat the miners found that – apart from mild dehydration and elevated blood pressure – the crew was unharmed.

According to France 24, the workers showed “no indication so far that anyone has been in distress”.
