24 Ideas for Raising Kind and Grateful Kids

Brad Aronson submitted his boy in spiderman costume

It’s a great time of year to remind ourselves how we can reinforce and encourage kindness and gratitude in our kids. Especially in December, there are so many great opportunities to do this.

Brad Aronson and his wife have often thought about how to make sure their son will turn out to be a grateful, kind and compassionate young man, but parenting is difficult.

“We have no idea what we’re doing, but we wanted to share some ideas and related thoughts.”

From these examples, you will agree the Aronsons DO know what they’re doing:

  • Help develop your child’s identity as a caring person. Rather than telling your child “That was a kind thing to do,” say, “You’re such a kind person.”
  • At dinner we discuss acts of kindness that each of us saw during the day. As we’ve been doing this, I’ve noticed that our son has begun doing many of the things we mention in conversation.
  • Give stuff away. At Halloween our son loved giving out candy. Jack even chased down adults clearly returning from work to give them candy. Even the people who seemed to be in a bad mood smiled. And, Jack learned the joy of giving. Set up a free lemonade stand or find something else to give out. Practice giving.

How An Angel Tree Gift Changed One Boy and 1000s of Lives

angel-tree-purchased-bradaronson submitted

Jimmy Wayne’s introduction to music came in the form of a guitar he received through the Christmas Angel Tree Program when he was eight-years-old – a random act of kindness from a caring person. The guitar, the first gift he ever received, ignited Wayne’s love of music. That love took Wayne down the path of becoming a musician, and eventually, an award winning country music star.

“None of this would have happened had it not been for a guitar.” said Wayne. “So I’m in debt and making sure that I do my part in raising awareness for a program that helped me out when I had nothing.”

To “do his part” Wayne wrote a song that tells of the enormous impact Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program has on the kids in need who receive gifts from strangers. Wayne hopes people will hear Paper Angels and be inspired to participate as gift givers in the Angel Tree Program.

The singer wound up doing a lot more than writing a hit song. In the middle of his career, Wayne decided to take a break from music and use his stardom to help nurture foster children in ways that go beyond lyrics.

All six-year-old Alex Hovater wants for Christmas is a happy holiday for the homeless in his town.

It all began when the little boy worried about a homeless man spending the winter outside and asked about helping.

His mother, Machelle, thought it would be a good chance to teach her son about empathy and how money works. So she suggested he could chose between aiding the homeless in Bakersfield, California, or receiving Christmas presents for himself.

When he asked why they couldn’t do both, Machelle told him there wasn’t enough money for both. Little Alex didn’t hesitate in his reply.

“OK, we’ll help them out,” she quoted him as saying.

Pick Up This Story And Ease It On Down The Road To Your Friends…

4 Ways To Manifest Your Soul Mate And Give Up Looking for ‘Perfect’

lego-couple-flowers-CC-Ale-Art

One of the radical truths I’ve learned through my years as a happiness coach, spiritual teacher, and student is that our intimate relationships are often the most challenging to manifest and maintain.

When we’ve either welcomed the wrong relationship into our lives or have run from the right ones, we end up alone and often yearning for the “perfect man”.

Time to face facts: there is no “perfect man”. Fantasies aren’t reality and when we choose to live in a fantasy, we miss out on the greatness of reality.

WANT MORE HAPPY? GET OUR NEW GOOD NEWS APP—>  Download FREE for Android and iOS

So, if you are ready to attract your soul match (not “perfect man”) there are some basic rules for love manifestation:

1. You attract what you are… OR what you believe you deserve.

If you constantly have insecure thoughts about yourself or have a low self-esteem and low self-worth, the men you attract will either capitalize on your insecurities or try to rescue you. Likely, you will only be attracted to the guy that is putting you down or rejecting you because he is reflecting your ego’s belief that you’re not good enough. Our ego wants to be right and will always find the proof it needs to be right.

This lack of self-worth will attract “players”, jerks, control-freaks, and abusers. If you meet a great guy that’s giving you love that you don’t believe you deserve, you’re likely to toss him out. So YOU need to change YOUR mind about YOURSELF. You do deserve to be loved. You are beautiful, talented, smart, and fun. You are enough. Believe that!

2. Ditch the list!

Stop looking at the things you identify as the “perfect man” for you.

“6’5, brown hair, brown eyes, straight teeth, broad shoulders, plays tennis, likes sushi, works in finance, drives a BMW, travels for work, like to play scrabble, blah blah blah…”

Does this sound familiar? Okay, maybe that’s not your list and perhaps you’ve never written it down, BUT you may have a mental checklist of superficial characteristics that he must have. It’s a good idea to have standards on the external – like maybe 3 must haves and those should be simple (job, healthy, car).

MORE: How To Serve The World By Turning Your Boredom Upside Down

I’ve seen it too many times where a woman does find a guy with everything on her list and then (insert suspense music) there is no chemistry whatsoever! Be honest, do you want that perfect picture or do you want to feel loved, appreciated, inspired, and connected?

I chose to go with manifesting from the feelings I wanted a long time ago and found the love of my life. It’s not what I thought it would look like, because it’s so much better! My heart sings when he walks into the room. I can’t wait to hear about his day and then playfully wrestle and laugh every night! I wanted the real thing, not the picture – and I got it!

3. Trust your instincts not your ego.

The ego is deceptive in both the positive and the negative, but both forms the ego takes can prevent you from being your truest self and falling in love with someone else’s truest self. Your ego can also blind you from engaging with an amazing guy and attract you to the worst-for-you guy.

In a relationship, your gut will tell you when it’s right and when it isn’t. There is actually a tiny, brain-like sensory system at your solar plexus that receives and transmits information – this is when you know something at a gut level. Your ego may block you, but your gut knows better. So listen to your instincts and let them guide you toward love.

4. Be open and willing.

First be open and willing to meet someone; and second open and willing to work through the challenges that arise in a relationship. If you learn that the person isn’t the right fit for you, you’ll walk away a better communicator and a wiser woman.

MOREA Simple Question That Will Change Your Life

It’s not always easy to be open and willing when you’ve been knocked down from past experiences, but if you want someone fabulous – it’s time to heal the wounds and open yourself up for something great to come your way!

The number of people dying of opioid overdoses in America has quadrupled since 1999. It’s believed that a more user-friendly version of naloxone in the hands of first responders could save thousands of lives.

Narcan’s key ingredient, naloxone, has been used to treat opioid overdoses for more than 40 years, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had only approved injectable forms until this week.

The nasal spray treatment is packaged in a simple, plastic device that is needle-free and ready to use with a four milligram dose of the remedy.

A user simply places the nozzle in the overdose patient’s nostril and presses the plunger once. The resulting spray can keep someone who has overdosed alive long enough to get to a hospital for further treatment.

Narcan will be available to police, fire fighters, schools, universities, and other local authorities in mass purchases for a discounted price of just $37.50 per device.

The Grateful Dead Was Born On Stage Fifty Years Ago Today (WATCH)

Fifty years ago today, a California rock band played its first concert under a new name and started a long, strange trip into music history.

Less than a week earlier, the San Francisco-based “Warlocks” had learned there was another group on the U.S. East Coast using the same name. With a series of prominent gigs coming up, they needed a name that would set them apart.

Thumbing through a dictionary, band leader Jerry Garcia happened upon a folk tale listed, and asked, “What about ‘Grateful Dead?’”

WANT MORE COOL STORIES? GET OUR NEW GOOD NEWS APP—>  Download FREE for Android and iOS

They had been playing at the famous Acid Test house parties thrown by author and playwright Ken Kesey (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), where their music became so popular that a stage gig was inevitable. On December 10, 1965 they performed their first official concert as “The Grateful Dead” in San Francisco’s historic Fillmore Auditorium.

There is no recording of that first performance — the set list even disappeared. But less than a month later, again performing at the Fillmore, someone in the audience would tape the first of more than 2,000 fan-recorded concerts of “The Grateful Dead” known to exist.

And those fans have to be grateful they don’t have to call themselves “Warlock Heads.” It just doesn’t roll off the tongue quite as easily as “Dead Heads’.

Oh, and that other band that was called “Warlocks” later changed its name, too. It became known as “The Velvet Underground.”

Rare Fish Saved From Extinction, Swims Off Endangered Species List

A tiny fish has beaten big odds to swim off the endangered species list.

Only the second fish to make it off the Endangered Species list, thanks to recovery efforts, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service delisted the Modoc sucker on Tuesday. — The Oregon chub was removed from the endangered list last year.

At its low point in 1985, the Modoc sucker was found in only seven streams, within just 13 total miles of habitat on the state line between Oregon and California. Today, 2,600 of the fish, which grow to three inches, can be found in 43 miles of streams within its historic habitat.

Conservationists say without the Endangered Species Act, the rare sucker might have gone the way of the dodo, becoming extinct. Putting it on the list led to restoration of its habitat that had been destroyed by soil erosion from cattle grazing along the water–now fenced in. Another remedy was to remove the invasive fish that had been stocked into streams.

You may remember — or even still have nightmares about — her eight-eyed, multi-fanged creation a couple of months ago inspired by the movie “Monster House.”

For Christmas, McConnell ditched the usual blinking lights and tacky inflatable Santas, and set out for a one-of-a-kind gingerbread house.

She spent just $700 to turn her childhood home into a huge life-sized version of the traditional tabletop holiday confection.

There are peppermints and gingerbread men adorning the facade, icing on the roof, and — because McConnell has a taste for the macabre even at Christmas — she dressed up her niece and nephew as Hansel and Gretel for the photo shoot.

Being Christmastime, no children were harmed by witches in the making of the holiday house and there’s a happy holiday ending.

Her parents love to throw a huge Christmas party every year and their house will no doubt be the easiest for party-goers to find on their street.
