7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom

The Lesson: What you don’t know will hurt you. People don’t know this; that you can’t earn your way to absolute financial freedom, but you can compound your way there. But where to put your money so it can earn the greatest return on compound interest? Robbins talks about strategy from other experts who have proven successful in helping out the average guy with investments.

Notable Excerpt: “People pick a mutual fund, not knowing what it is, and 96% of mutual funds never beat the market. And, the fees are just destroying people. People don’t even know what fees they pay. Most people are paying 2000x more for the same product because of fees. Asset Allocation is another key: Dividing your money into buckets. You have to diversify, but when you think you are in a balanced portfolio (50-50), you’re really not balanced in your risk. Stocks are 3x more volatile than bonds, so you are 95 at risk and 5 percent on the good side. That’s why everybody loses.”

The Speaker: Tony Robbins is a best-selling author, motivational speaker, life coach, philanthropist, and entrepreneur. The California-based strategist has become such an influential lecturer, over 4 million people have attended his live seminars. Tony has personally interviewed 50 of the world’s most brilliant financial minds to write the book “MONEY Master the Game: 7 Simple Steps to Financial Freedom”. All of the book’s proceeds are donated to charities that feed the hunger, and it is available for free, excluding the cost of shipping.  The Tony Robbins podcast is also available for free on Spotify and iTunes with more of his longer motivational programs featured on his website.

The Host: After spending years of his young life and athletic career struggling with his own emotional wellbeing, a crippling injury left Lewis Howes without an identity and without any work. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, however, Howes recreated himself as a multi-million dollar media producer, motivational speaker, bestselling author, and podcast host. The ex-football player now spends his days chatting with the most inspirational icons of this generation on his School of Greatness podcast.

Podcast: The School of Greatness podcast is available for download on Soundcloud and iTunes. You can also watch footage of the interviews on Howes’s YouTube channel.

Books: Howes is the author of the New York Times bestselling book “The School of Greatness”: an in-depth collection of lessons and wisdom that he has gathered from interviewing hundreds of the world’s greatest role models and thinkers. Howes’s latest book, “The Mask of Masculinity”, is based on his experience with the dangerous stereotypes and expectations that are placed on men in modern society.

Humans Don’t Know What These Dogs Are Doing Until They Find Confused Senior Shivering in the Snow

Two labradoodles are being hailed as heroes after their animal instincts led to the rescue of an elderly woman who was lost outside in the snow.

Eva and Adam first woke up their human owners at 4:30AM on Saturday morning when they began tugging on their clothing and begging to go outside.

Confused by their pups’ unusual behavior, Susan and Lonnie Chester opened their front door to let the dogs outside. Before they could even fully open the door, however, Adam and Eva raced outside and led the Chesters to an older woman who was dressed in nothing but a night gown.

The senior, who looked to be in her late 80s, was sitting in the snow near the Chesters’ truck.

“She looked up at me and said, ‘I’m so cold,’” Lonnie told MLive. “I have no idea how long she had been out there. She must have been terrified.”

Lonnie took the woman inside, covered her in blankets, and called 911. Shortly after emergency crews showed up at the house, the senior’s family also arrived on the scene to help escort her to the hospital for medical treatment.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Norvell Township, Michigan were as low as 9 degrees Fahrenheit (-12 degrees Celsius) this weekend.

“We’re just so proud of our dogs knowing they may have saved a life. I hope this serves as a wake-up call for everyone, especially with it being so cold out,” Susan told MLive. “It could have been a tragic outcome had Adam and Eva not woken us.”

Fed Up With Expensive Medications, Hospitals Are Banding Together to Make Their Own Drugs

Frustrated by constant price gouging and supply shortages, some of the nation’s largest hospital systems are banding together to create their own nonprofit drug company.

The collaboration, which currently includes about 300 different hospitals, as well as the Department of Veteran Affairs, will be dedicated towards creating generic versions of medications that have undergone major price increases in recent years.

Dr. Marc Harrison of Intermountain Healthcare, the nonprofit hospital group that is currently spearheading the effort, told the New York Times: “This is a shot across the bow of the bad guys. We are not going to lay down. We are going to go ahead and try and fix it.”

Intermountain Healthcare said in a statement on Wednesday: “The new company intends to be an FDA approved manufacturer and will either directly manufacture generic drugs or sub-contract manufacturing to reputable contract manufacturing organizations, providing patients an affordable alternative to products from generic drug companies whose capricious and unfair pricing practices are damaging the generic drug market and hurting consumers.

RELATEDThese New Alternatives For the EpiPen Will Cost Less Than $100

“The company will also seek to stabilize the supply of essential generic medications administered in hospitals, many of which have fallen into chronic shortage,” they added.

Harrison said that Intermountain will not be disclosing which medications the alliance will be producing due to the fear of rival drug companies temporarily undercutting their prices and freezing them out of the market. The nonprofit will, however, primarily be focusing on the drugs that have experienced shortages and price increases.

MORELet’s Examine the Myth That Big Pharma Doesn’t Want to Cure Cancer

While they may initially only be selling the life-saving medications directly to hospitals, the nonprofit may open their market to the general public in the future.

Dr. Kevin A. Schulman, a professor of medicine who is advising the effort, told the Times: “If they all agree to buy enough to sustain this effort, you will have a huge threat to people that are trying to manipulate the generic drug market. They will want to think twice.”

The initiative is expected to combat pharmaceutical companies from monopolizing on vital medications, the most notable example being when Turing Pharmaceuticals CEO Martin Shkreli bought the marketing rights for Daraprim: a tablet used to treat AIDS patients. The 32-year-old hedge fund manager faced public outrage after he raised the price of the drug from $13 per pill to $750 in 2015.

Woman Begs For Help to Heat Icy Baltimore Classrooms and Gets Warmest Response

Samierra Jones couldn’t bear to see the young students at her city schools struggle through their classes in freezing temperatures – so she took to social media with a plea for help.

Jones, who is a senior at Coppin State University and a graduate of the Baltimore City Public School system, is no stranger to the chilling conditions of city classrooms. Because the district’s school buildings are already lacking adequate heating systems, this month’s harsh east coast weather conditions forced students to stay bundled up throughout the school day.

“Students are still required to attend classes that are freezing and expected to wear their coats to assist in keeping them warm,” says Jones. “How can you teach a child in these conditions?”

Jones created a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising enough money to buy at least 600 space heaters and supplemental winter clothing for the children. When the campaign went viral, however, strangers from around the world donated over $80,000 – four times the original goal.

RELATEDClooney’s Foundation to Open 7 Schools for 3,000 Syrian Refugee Children

Dozens of locals who saw the page went one step further and donated bags full of coats, gloves, hats, socks, and scarves. Others shipped boxes of additional supplies, such as water bottles, hand wipes, cups, and tissues to the schools.

Much of the campaign’s success is thanks to former NFL linebacker and Baltimore native Aaron Maybin. The 29-year-old athlete spurred thousands of social media followers to donate to the cause after he posted a heart-wrenching video of a dozen students sitting together in a chilly Maryland classroom.

Since the video started being shared on the internet, Maybin worked tirelessly alongside Jones to collect and receive donations at drop-off locations across the city.

MORE60 Schools Are Installing Washers and Dryers For Homeless and Troubled Students

The volunteers are currently collaborating with city teachers to distribute space heaters and outerwear to the classrooms that need it most. Additionally, the campaign has raised awareness of the school’s shoddy infrastructure so that city officials are being pushed to improve classroom conditions.

“It is the responsibility of the school board to make sure that funds [are] allocated for resources such as boilers, infrastructure, and such,” says Jones. “And this campaign has brought the right amount of attention to this issue to the point where there is pressure on those who are held accountable for funding and project management.”

Maybin tweeted: “While our policy makers have been talking and pointing fingers, the people are mobilizing & taking action. And the world is finally taking notice…”

Los Angeles is Searching for a Graphic Designer With a Hilarious Help Wanted Ad

The city of Los Angeles is searching for a graphic designer to create all of their pamphlets, posters, brochures, ads, and displays – and judging by the questionable “Help Wanted” poster that they used on social media last week, the city needs one pretty badly.

The Los Angeles Jobs Twitter page’s “Help Wanted” ad looked suspiciously like it had been created by a 5-year-old on Microsoft Paint.

If potential applicants are thrown off by the weird scribbles of their government officials, however, the job itself is worth your while; applicants can earn as much as $40,000 to $103,000 per year.

The post spurred some Twitter users to send in “resumes” that were hilariously similar to the original poster, while others took the chance to share their own embarrassing graphic design experiences.

If you or any other graphic designers you know would like to apply for the position, you can send in your application on the Los Angeles Careers page.

365 Ways to Hug: Watch the Charming Tradition of Three Generations on National Hugging Day

32 years ago today, the first National Hugging Day was celebrated, founded by a minister and social services worker in Michigan. In 2006, the Hugging Day website named Jana Doolittle “the Most Huggable” person because, as a third grade teacher, she always asks her class, “Does anyone need a hug today?”

This year, though, we nominate a man from New Jersey who calls himself Dr. Hug—and when you hear his story, you’ll probably agree that he deserves to be the spokesperson of the holiday forevermore.

An attorney from New Jersey, he was inspired by his parents who raised him and his three brothers with the most exciting daily hugs a child could imagine.

WATCHMonkeys Give WAY Too Many Hugs to Animal Rescuers in Peru

“We shared these hugs from the time I was born,” Dr. Hug told Good News Network. “And we are passing them on to our children.

He looked on the internet and could find no other special hugs out there, so he decided to pen a book that would pass along this 3-generation tradition to other families.

“It would be so great if everyone could enjoy these,” he pondered by telephone with GNN.

Equally as fun for the person giving the hug, as the ones who are feeling the love, each embrace is a special kooky gift.

RELATEDVideo of Girl Running to Hug Her Brother Every Day After School is Sure to Make You Smile

“The first one I remember was the Roller Coaster Hug,” he recalls of his childhood. (You need a couch or bed for this one, so if you fall over, your giggles don’t turn to groans.)

Now, with teenagers of his own, he says they still do many of these hugs—and the same Roller Coaster hug is their favorite too.

Hugs in the new book include: “Exciting Embraces” like the Helicopter Hug, Tilt-A-Whirl and Rocket Hug; “Sports Squeezes” include the Baseball Swing Hug, Tennis Serve and Backstroke Hug; and “Wrestling Wraps” that include the Headlock Hug, Chicken Wing and Full Nelson Hug.

Norway Set to Ban All Fur Farming

The Norwegian government has just passed a total ban on all fur farming.

The legislation, which was announced by the Norwegian Animal Rights Organization (NOAH) on last week, will make it illegal for the country’s 340 fur farms to continue business. The facilities will have until 2025 to close down entirely.

RELATEDCalifornia Becomes First State to Ban Pet Shop Sales of Non-Rescued Animals

The ban’s approval was adopted after a 30-year campaign conducted by Norwegian animal rights organizations against the inhumane practice.

Camilla Björkbom, chairman of the Animal Rights Society, says that the legislation sends a strong message to other Scandinavian countries such as Sweden.

“We welcome the Swedish Government’s proposal to investigate the welfare of minkers on Sweden’s fur farms, but today we see that Norway shows that a ban on fur farming is possible. This is a great news … because it sets a good example for Sweden and the upcoming Swedish investigation.”

“Norway is talking about today’s message to the growing number of countries in Europe who discontinue fur farming. By 2017, the Czech Republic and Germany have also decided to shut down fur farms,” Björkbom said.

She Shares Her Wisdom With the World, Now Dozens of Strangers Surprise Her on 101st Birthday

As a thank you for her wisdom and charm, hundreds of people from around the world pitched in to surprise Grandma Eileen on her 101st birthday.

The beloved senior is renowned for giving advice to stressed out New Yorkers from her home in Seattle, Washington 3,000 miles away. Her grandson, Mike Matthews, set up a makeshift therapist’s booth on the streets of the Big Apple so pedestrians could Skype with Eileen and ask for her guidance. Additionally, Eileen has a Facebook and Instagram page on which she answers questions from youngsters all over the world.

Then last month, Matthews took to social media and asked if Eileen’s fans could help them celebrate her birthday by sending in letters.

Thanks to a little social media magic, the senior’s Post Office box was flooded with dozens of heartfelt notes, cards, and letters.

Heather Matthews, Eileen’s granddaughter-in-law, told Good News Network: “It was so fun to surprise Grandma Eileen today with her party and the letters. She was so emotional as soon as we pulled up and saw the news people. She was shocked when she found out they were there to see her. Then when she walked in and saw all the people and the letters from the box, she was speechless.”

Widow’s Heartfelt Letter Spurs Newscaster to Wear Special Jacket

A Denver anchorman made headlines last month for a touching opening segment – and it wasn’t what he said that touched hearts, it’s what he wore on his back.

Kyle Clark of Colorado-9 News opened up one of his shows by saying that he was wearing a blazer that had been sent to him by a viewer named Connie Larson.

The jacket used to belong to her husband Doyle. While Connie had always detested the jacket, they had always joked that Clark should wear it for his show.

LOOKInstead of Cleaning the Fridge as Requested, Home Nurse Finds it Empty –and Fills it

When 54-year-old Doyle passed away in December because of a brain tumor, Connie sent the jacket to Clark and explained its sentimental value.

“I do understand if this jacket is ‘too ugly’ for even your wardrobe but know that it always made us smile each time we saw what you chose to wear each night,” wrote Connie.

Clark donned the old brown and black blazer for his show and asked his viewers to donate to the American Brain Tumor Association in Doyle’s name. Any viewer who donated to the nonprofit would be entered into a contest to win one of Clark’s own jackets.

RELATEDCoffee and a Muffin at Restaurant Drive-thru Saves a Stranger’s Life

In a follow-up to his original message that was broadcasted a few days later, Clark said that the charity’s website had been “overwhelmed” by people donating at the same time  in Doyle’s honor. He then kept his word and picked two random donors as the recipients of his own jackets.

If you would like to continue the compassionate trend, you can donate to the American Brain Tumor Association in Doyle’s name by visiting the charity’s website.

12-Year-Old Prodigy Plays 44 Instruments, With Goal of 100 by Year’s End… Can you even name 100?

This 12-year-old boy can do more than just play “Wonderwall” on the guitar – he can play 44 different instruments.

Neil Nayyar of Oak Grove, California holds the Assist Foundation’s world record for being the youngest person to proficiently play the highest number of musical instruments.

The prodigy didn’t become a musical genius overnight, however – Neil enjoys spending six hours per day practicing all of his musical tools. While the seventh grader learns most of his music by ear, he also gets lessons from seven teachers in his local area—and five teachers on Skype.

The instruments range from rock and blues standards; trumpet, drums, and bass; to orchestra utensils, like the flute and the harp; to more worldly additions, such as the bulal tarang and the shenhai.

“Learning is always endless. You keep learning—lifelong,” his father Rajan Nayyar told Good News Network. “His final goal is to play 100 instruments by the time he turns 13 years old. That will be another world record.”

After that, Rajan says that Neil plans on growing up to become a “composer, author/educator or music director”.

“We feel very happy whenever we see any human being do some thing exceptional,” added Rajan. “We hope Neil’s story will encourage kids of his age, and inspire the parents to encourage their kids’ hidden talents and make the world more happy place.”

Every Friday Morning, Listen to Our New Weekly Radio Gig: The Good News Guru!

I’ve got some awesome news from our GNN west coast office… We’ve partnered with a super-cool morning host in L.A. to produce a new radio segment featuring my work as “The Good News Guru”,  a title I happily received from the Washington Post nine years ago.

I know you will love Ellen K. She is a down-to-earth sweetheart who is also ‘the Voice’ of the Oscars and Grammys. She’s got the number one rated morning show in Los Angeles, and it’s dubbed as Feel Good Radio.

My new partner, Anthony Samadani, worked with her on his TV show, Hatched, which she ‘voiced’—and now we’ve finally got things cooking at KOST-103.5.

  • She provided a #FeelGood story about Keanu Reeves for a new GNN video, highlighting his generous acts of charity and kindness, which are even more admirable because he keeps them on the down-low to avoid accolades.
  • I visited her studio last week (see the video below) and told her how I came to become a Good News Guru and why I’m so happy to be working with her.
  • Check out our premiere Good News Guru episode here at KOST, from January 19, and listen to our weekly call from her studios every Friday at 9:54 am EST / 6:54 PST online at her homepage— click to Listen Live— or from your car or radio if you live in LA.

Keanu Reeves has gone undercover as a hero.

For 15 years, in fact, he’s been ‘The One’ — playing in a blockbuster charity role for kids with cancer, following his sister’s diagnosis of leukemia.

Wanting to remain anonymous, he reportedly has never attached his name to the nonprofit foundation that he set up to fund cancer research and care for children in hospitals.

The 54-year-old Canadian actor, also donates to the Spinal Cord Opportunities for Rehabilitation Endowment (SCORE), a charity that supports hockey players with spinal injuries.

Teen Buying Coats For Homeless Doesn’t See Stranger Snap His Photo Til Hundreds Share It Online

Fredrick White was just trying to do something good for his fellow men when he went to Goodwill to buy a couple of jackets.

Before the 19-year-old had even paid for a bunch of the store’s secondhand winter coats, however, a stranger in line struck up a conversation with him.

The stranger, Jim Glasgow, was surprised by how many coats were in the teen’s hands. White then told him that he was buying the coats for homeless members of his community.

Glasgow was so stunned by White’s words and his mission, that he snapped a photo of the teen at checkout and sent the picture to his daughter Haley, asking her to post it online as a message of inspiration to others.

When White later saw that the photo of him had gone viral on social media, he was shocked.

“I was at work and I was like, ‘Oh my God, they snapped a picture of me,’” he told WKYC.

White said that he had originally become inspired to buy the coats after reading an online story about people hanging free jackets for the homeless on poles and fences.

‘Miracle on 85th Street’: How a Huge Dog Saved My Child’s Life

Rburtzel, CC license

I was a young mother living with my husband, my young son and my cat in New York City. When you live in New York City, since you cannot go out in the backyard, you take the baby’s stroller, put in all the things you might need (diapers, wipes, hats, sunscreen, juice etc.), and you load up the stroller and ride down the elevator from your high-rise apartment. You then stagger to the street pushing your heavy stroller as you slowly make your way to the park – or in my case, Central Park.

In Central Park, you go to the playground and sit with the other mothers (and the lone father or two) as all the children play.

One day, I decided to change my routine. I was tired of going to Central Park every day, so I decided to go to the area near the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The day was just about perfect— sunny and warm.

I walked around the outside of the museum and found a perfect place where lots of people and dogs were playing and picnicking. It was on the side of the museum, at the top of a grassy hill that led down to 85th Street. From where we sat, we could look down the hill and watch all the cars along 85th Street or we could turn our eyes away and watch all the people. Either way was interesting for a fourteen-month-old boy and his mother.

LOOKStray Dog Crashes A Wedding And Finds His Own Happily Ever After

I’ll never know exactly what happened. Did I look away for a moment after I unbuckled his seat belt. Did Jon see something that attracted him? In the space of a second, life can change; and somehow, suddenly, there was Jon running down the steep hill. I ran after him, vaguely aware that other people started running as well. He seemed to gain momentum and was hurtling down the hill so quickly, I knew I’d never be able to catch him. I also knew (as did the other people running with me) that if Jon couldn’t stop, he would plunge headlong into the street. There were no barriers to stop him. The cars kept driving and Jon just kept running toward them.

I remember how desperate I felt. I ran and ran, but I couldn’t reach him. Suddenly, out of nowhere, came a huge Golden Retriever running past me. He ran ahead of Jon and planted himself directly in front of Jon. My toddler careened into the dog and fell down. Jon cried, I cried, and the dog who had just saved his life stood quietly by. People surrounded us and cheered. I soon found the dog’s owner.

“Your dog saved my son,” I gasped. “Another few seconds and he would have landed in the street.”

“Kane is a good boy,” she answered.

“He is a hero,” I said as Jon cried even louder.

WATCHRace Car Driver Gives Up Winning in Order to Save a Dog

I never saw Kane again. I never learned if he was trained to do what he did or if his rescue instincts kicked in just then, or if he just wanted to play. All I knew was that I was profoundly grateful to the dog who saved my child.

People rarely think of New York City as a friendly place. But when the need arises, New Yorkers always come through. I never thanked all those people running with me to catch Jon. I never saw any of them again. So today, I want to thank them all, thank Kane and his owner, and thank God for the Miracle on 85th Street.

Can You Be Healthy at Any Size?

The Lesson: It’s true that body weight is strongly correlated with the risk of various diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. But there are numerous other indicators as well, including blood pressure, blood sugar, blood fats, and inflammation. Eating more vegetables and exercising more often can make anyone healthier, no matter their size.

Notable Excerpt: “Body weight and body mass index (BMI) doesn’t take into account body composition. A very muscular person may have a BMI that’s considered overweight or obese, when they are no such thing. On the flip side of the coin, someone with a low BMI may still have a high amount of visceral fat—the so-called “skinny-fat” phenomenon—which increases disease risk. . . . Also, the conventional criteria for healthy body weight are based primarily on Caucasian body types and may not be appropriate for people of all races and ethnicities.”
