Guard Squirrel Pet Goes Nuts on Burglar

Joey the Squirrel-Youtube

Joey the squirrel may not be as big as a guard dog, but he’s definitely just as protectively vicious.

Adam Pearl never suspected that his pet rodent would be much of a threat until someone robbed his house in Meridian, Idaho on Tuesday night.

After coming home to find doors opened and scratch marks around the safe lock where he kept his guns, Adam called the police.

When officer Ashley Turner arrived on the scene, however, she was surprised to see Joey scurrying around the house. She asked if he tended to bite people.

“I said, well, he usually doesn’t bite but you never know cause he is a squirrel,” Pearl told KIVI.

The officer found the culprit and returned a few hours later with his stolen belongings.

“She said while she was questioning the individual he had scratches on his hands so she asked him ‘did you get that from the squirrel’ and he says yeah, damn thing kept attacking me and wouldn’t stop until I left,” said Pearl.

In honor of Joey’s efficient guard work, he was rewarded with some special treats and national praise for his good deed.

Youth Basketball Team Forfeits Season Instead of Excluding Girls

School Basketball Team-WABC

This New Jersey children’s basketball team said that they would rather forfeit the rest of their season rather than play any games without their two female teammates.

The St. John the Apostle’s fifth grade Catholic Youth Organization basketball team were told two weeks ago that if they wanted to finish their season, they wouldn’t be allowed to play with a co-ed team – despite the fact that they had already been playing with female teammates for the last four years.

“One parent told me it’s my decision [whether the girls play], but I said, ‘No way. I’m not making this decision for eleven 10-year-olds,’” St. John’s coach Rob Martel told ESPN.

When presented with the options, the children reportedly started chanting “Unity” as a means of reenforcing their decision.

Teacher Creates Chairs From Tennis Balls to Soothe Autistic Students

Tennis Ball Chairs-Raymond Ellis Elementary School

This elementary school teacher went above and beyond for her students with sensory issues just by using paint, a hot glue gun, and a few tennis balls.

Amy Maplethorpe, a first grade speech-language pathologist at Raymond Ellis Elementary School in Round Lake, Illinois created special textured chairs for her students with Down syndrome, autism, or sensory processing disorder. She reportedly got the idea when she came across a similar project on Pinterest.

“Sensory seating is used for students who may have difficulty processing information from their senses and from the world around them,” wrote the school on Facebook. “Tennis balls on the seat and backrest provide an alternative texture to improve sensory regulation.”

DNA Test Saves Service Dog From the Death Penalty

Jeb the Dog-Facebook

Jeb has been the devoted service dog of 79-year-old Kenneth Job since he was rescued from a shed in Detroit one year ago.

Kenneth suffers from a rare neurodegenerative disorder known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. The disease creates loss of muscle tissues in the body, leading Kenneth to have trouble standing and walking.

That’s why the family was devastated when Jeb was put on desolation row for allegedly killing their neighbor’s Pomeranian named Vlad.

WATCHDog Wearing Life Jacket is Found Adrift in Vast Gulf of Mexico

Though the Job family insisted that Jeb wouldn’t hurt a fly, Christopher Sawa said that he looked out his window in August and saw Jeb standing over the body of his little dog.

Jeb was seized by animal control and the Job family took the Sawas to court over the accusations. After weeks of deliberation and court proceedings, Judge Michael Hulewicz sentenced the canine to death, ruling that he was a “dangerous animal” despite Jeb’s attorney arguing that there wasn’t sufficient evidence to convict him.

In a last attempt to save their beloved hound, the Job family requested a DNA test be made. For $416, a sample was taken from Jeb’s mouth as well as the bite marks on Vlad’s body. As fate would have it, the DNA was not a match and Jeb was set free.

Hundreds of Stranded New Zealand Whales Swim Free

Pilot Whales-Youtube

In one of New Zealand’s largest mass whale beachings, over 240 pilot whales were saved by the coming tide.

Since Thursday night, hundreds of the oceanic mammals were washing up at Golden Bay near the northwest tip of the South Island.

While many were lost despite dozens of volunteers offering assistance, conservationists are relieved that the most recent beached pod were able to free themselves.

CHECK OUT: Manatee Population Has Rebounded 500 Percent, No Longer Endangered

The shallow muddy waters of the bay are notorious for confusing whales’ sonar, trapping them on the shores when the tide recedes.

“This is the third worst stranding that we’ve recorded in our history so it’s a very large one. Logistically, it’s a massive undertaking,” said Auckland University marine biologist Rochelle Constantine.

According to Reuters, pilot whales are not listed as an endangered species, but little is known about their actual population numbers.

Muslim Teen Assists Police in Arrest of Man Who Assaulted Jewish Woman

Ahmed Khalifa-Youtube

This 17-year-old Muslim teen didn’t have to put himself at risk when chasing down an older attacker, but he didn’t care – all he wanted to do was seek justice for the woman who was assaulted.

Ahmed Khalifa was on the southbound Q-train in Brooklyn when he saw 31-year-old Rayvon Jones slap a 56-year-old Jewish Orthodox woman across the face.

The attack seemed unprovoked since the woman had simply been reading a book. But the slap was so strong, it broke the woman’s glasses and drew blood from the side of her face. When she fell unconscious, Rayvon took off at the next subway stop.

RELATEDTeen’s Simple Question Saves a Man’s Life, Baby Is Named After Him

“It was a very hard slap, I almost could feel the slap,” Khalifa told the Daily News. “He was 6-foot-6, and a very big, big guy.”

While fellow passengers on the train assisted the fallen woman, Ahmed instructed the conductor to call for help and gave chase to the assailant. The teen lost sight of Rayvon and unsuccessfully tried to flag down a police cruiser. He did, however, catch the attention of an Orthodox passerby in his car who offered his assistance.

They finally found Rayvon waiting at a bus stop and called the police with his location. When Rayvon boarded the bus, officers descended on the vehicle. Though he was yelling violent threats and kicking the doors of the bus, he was eventually arrested.

Women Break Stereotypes By Building Their Own Tiny Houses

Women Doing Construction Work-Submitted

These women are breaking the glass ceiling by building a ceiling of their own.

Women Who Build: Artists Who Own is an ongoing project focused on women coming together to learn construction skills, grow their women-powered network, volunteer, and build a tiny house together in June 2017.

Unlike most tiny house builds, this project involves over 50 women learning not only construction skills but marketing, sourcing, and research. The team of women meet monthly to discuss design of the house and development of this project, then participate in workshops to gain confidence in the skills necessary to build a tiny house. Even though construction is typically considered to be a male’s job, the participants range in age from 14 to over 65.

WATCHMan Builds Tiny House for Homeless Woman Sleeping in the Dirt

The project started in October 2016, and will run through September 2017 with the build happening at Knockdown Center in Maspeth, New York in June. In August, the tiny house will be outfitted with an installation designed to demonstrate creative solutions based on high real estate living and workspace costs.

The project was started by local artist and activist Yvonne Shortt who came up with the idea when she realized that she wanted to learn construction skills herself.

“If I teach myself, I learn – but if I work with other like-minded women, we all do,” says Yvonne.

Trouble Waking Up? Camping Could Set Your Clock Straight

canadian-park-camping-facebook

If you have trouble going to sleep at night and waking up for work or school in the morning, a week of camping in the great outdoors might be just what you need.

That’s according to new evidence showing that humans’ internal biological clocks will tightly synchronize to a natural, midsummer light-dark cycle, if only they are given the chance.

A week of exposure to true dawn and dusk with nights lit only by a campfire’s glow had the biggest effect on people who might otherwise describe themselves as night owls. Under those conditions, they quickly reverted to a schedule much more like an early bird’s.

RELATEDMeditation and Music May Reverse Early Memory Loss in Adults

“By increasing our exposure to sunlight and reducing our exposure to electrical lighting at night, we can turn our internal clock and sleep times back and likely make it easier to awaken and be alert in the morning,” says Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado Boulder.

Wright and his colleagues first studied the internal circadian timing of eight adults after one week of routine work, school, social activities, and self-selected sleeping schedules with the normal exposure to electrical lighting. They then took those same people out camping in Colorado, with sunlight and campfires only – no flashlights or even smart phones allowed – but they could sleep according to any schedule they chose.

Their studies showed that a typical, modern environment causes about a two-hour delay in the circadian clock as indicated by fluctuations in the hormone melatonin. People tended to stay up until after midnight and to wake up around 8:00 in the morning. After a week of natural lighting, all measures of circadian timing shifted two hours back, and sleep schedules followed, even as the total time spent sleeping stayed about the same.

MOREQuiet Time Program Brings Radical Improvement To Schools Worldwide

The findings may explain an observed paradox in brain arousal, the researchers say. In our modern world, melatonin levels tend to decrease to daytime levels about two hours after we wake up. In other words, our biological night extends past our wake time and contributes to why many of us are at our sleepiest soon after we wake up in the morning. With exposure to natural light, that decrease in melatonin shifts to the last hour of sleep time, then brain arousal rises earlier, likely helping people feel more alert in the morning.

Of course, we can’t all go camping all the time. But the researchers say some other strategies could help. “Our findings suggest that people can have earlier bed and wake times, more conducive to their school and work schedules, if they were to increase their exposure to sunlight during the day and decrease their exposure to electrical lighting at night,” Wright says.

So, go for a morning walk, keep your shades open at work, and step outside for lunch. In the evening, keep the lights down low and turn the computers and TVs off. You’ll thank yourself in the morning. (Source: Cell Press)

Young Neighbor Invites Ailing 89-Year-Old Woman to Move In

Chris and Norma-Youtube

Even though 31-year-old Chris Salvatore and 89-year-old Norma Cook are vastly different ages, they are the perfect roommates for each other – and the best of friends.

The duo first met about four years ago when Chris moved in across the hall from Norma.

“After a couple weeks of saying hello through her kitchen window that looked out onto our apartment complex courtyard I decided to knock on her door and enter Norma’s world,” says Chris, who is an actor living in Los Angeles. “I soon learned that she had no family of her own living here in California, was suffering from a long list of health complications, including leukemia and just that week she had to give up her car because she lost her ability to drive.”

MOREGrieving Man Can Sleep Again After Girl Reaches Out in the Grocery Store

The two grew steadily closer as Chris continued to volunteer for tasks involving her home and medical care.

“I would help her cook meals, drive her to the doctors, banks, pharmacies and even just recently I got the amazing experience to accompany her to vote. We had such a blast these past few years filled with so much joy and laughter.”

His assistance was needed more than ever when Norma’s health rapidly started to decline over the last six months. She was hospitalized several times for pneumonia, asthma attacks, and sustaining nasty falls in her apartment. The bleakest news came when doctors said that unless she was given 24 hour care at home, she would be sent to a state care facility.

Chris created a GoFundMe page which raised over $75,000 for private care — and, most importantly, invited Norma to live with him so he could look after her and cut her out-of-pocket costs.

After the two became roommates, they realized it was a perfect match.

“She loves it! I do most of my work at home so I am here most of the time to care for her, so it only made sense to the both of us.”

“She is my adopted grandmother, after all, and I am her grandson she never had.”

Shelia whispered to the young woman under her breath telling her to go to the bathroom. On the sink was a message asking if the young girl needed help, to which she replied “yes”.

All Amanda Stockfelt could think about as she was thrown through the air by a massive tornado was whether her not her 2-month-old daughter Autumn was okay – and thanks to a sturdy car seat, she was.

Amanda is employed at an impound lot in Louisiana. She was going about her morning inside the work trailer on Tuesday when she heard the unmistakable sounds of a tornado coming closer and closer.

Without stopping to think, the mother strapped her infant daughter into her car seat and crawled under her desk along with another co-worker.

As they hid in fear, the trailer was torn apart around them and Amanda and her daughter were sucked into the vortex. Though Amanda was being thrown through the sky, she did not let go of the car seat holding her daughter.

They eventually landed on the ground, sustaining some injuries, but still relatively unharmed.

“It’s just inconceivable. I couldn’t imagine, I mean, I’m thinking my job’s gone, the only car we had is gone, but she was OK, I was OK, and everything else can be replaced,” Stockfelt told WVUE.
