Harry Potter Works Magic On A Whole New Generation in ‘The Cursed Child’

Potter Fans twitter lizo mzimba

The nine-year wait is over—Harry Potter is back and early reviews of the stage production in London’s West End suggest its story, characters, and special effects hold their own against the multi-million dollar blockbuster films.

“The Cursed Child” picks up with the same characters millions followed through childhood and adolescence, but now, nineteen years later, as adults with their own children facing new adventures and dangers at Hogwarts.

James Parker looks like a perfect choice to play the adult Harry Potter

Early reviews say the nearly four-and-a-half hour play zips by, Designed to be seen in two parts–either in an afternoon and evening, or two consecutive nights–it possesses the same magic that made the books and films so popular. There are plenty of laughs and the emphasis remains on the children who are attending Hogwarts at the time.

Press reporters were not allowed into the fan-exclusive preview performance and J.K. Rowling asked theatergoers to keep silent about the plot. So far, there have been no leaks, which makes us wonder if some spell was cast over the audience.

Anthony Boyle as Draco, with potential villain and son, Scorpius Malfoy

“The child may be cursed but this show most definitely isn’t,” The Mirror wrote in its newspaper, in response to fans who reported almost unanimously with two thumbs up.

Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, the two-part play at the Palace Theatre London, will have its official opening on July 30. Some kinks still need to be worked out after the owl escaped its perch during the preview. What we do know of the plot comes from the play’s website:

“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Frog Airlifted For Life-Saving Medical Care After His Lawn Mower Accident

Wounded Tree Frog released Frog Safe Inc

An Australian frog was treated like a prince when he was injured in an accident with a lawn mower — even being airlifted to a hospital that specializes in treating frogs.

An airline donated the appropriate pet carrier, but the amphibian still had to go through security like every other passenger — even being x-rayed.

The hospital reports the frog has recovered quickly and is gaining weight.

“Most of the public still doesn’t realize that frogs are not necessarily included in your typical wildlife rescue repertoire,” hospital president Deborah Pergolotti, told Australia’s ABC News. “It’s still one of the animals that have not really made it above that line — there’s almost a glass ceiling.”

Fortunately for this frog, there were a lot of people willing to help him leap through it.

Young Entrepreneur’s Simple Button Keeps People With Dementia From Wandering Off

After watching her own mother care for people with dementia for over 15 years, a young woman from London was inspired to create a device that would keep people living with dementia safer.

Natalie Price calls her Proximity Button “the first of its kind in the dementia market,” and after two years of development has launched a crowdfunding campaign this week to raise enough money to manufacture the super-simple, yet effective, device.

RELATED: ‘Lost’ Memories in Alzheimer Sufferers May Be Recoverable, Says Study

An affordable solution to guard against wandering, the smart button’s sensor, worn by a person with dementia, connects to a caregiver’s iPhone or Android device and alerts them when the wearer wanders too far away. Because it is not a warning device, rather than a tracking device, it does not rely on expensive technology.

James Ashwell, Founder of Unforgettable.org, an online marketplace of products and services for dementia and memory loss commented, “There are a few tracking products available in the market, but they are expensive. I’m excited about Proximity because it’s unlike other products out there; it’s a simple solution to help keep people safer at a much more affordable price point.”

In the UK, dementia affects 850,000 people and more than 60% of these people often wander off and if they’re not found within 24 hours, up to half of individuals end up seriously injured.

“I want everyone to be able to protect the people they care about the most,” Price told Good News Network. “We approached the product and user experience of Proximity with the following principles in mind: simplicity, discretion and affordability.”

WATCH: 98-Year-old Grandma With Dementia is Still a Charmer with Her Lewd Joke Doll

Natalie, 25, has a working prototype that has been tested and proven successful using a small battery. Once the crowdfunding campaign is complete, Natalie estimates that the product launch will be as soon as September of this year.

As for the range that sets off the alarm, if you are outdoors in a big open space it will alert you at about 20 meters (65 feet). If you are inside, for example in a busy supermarket, the alarm will go off a lot quicker because walls and people will get in the way of the signal and block it far sooner – around 10 meters (32 feet).

The campaign, which has raised 40 percent of its goal already, gives each early adopter who contributes $65 to the fundraiser one Proximity Button to use with the free app. Two buttons will cost you $99 (£68).

A new center for women, the first of its kind in British Columbia, opened its doors to provide legal help for free or a reduced-cost.

“We are incredibly proud to announce that, today, the doors open to an historic new service in B.C.,” said a spokesperson for the charity responsible for setting up the service. “We couldn’t be more thrilled that BC women will now have greater access to legal assistance.“

The charity, West Coast LEAF, partnered with the law school at the University of British Columbia to open a full service storefront legal clinic on May 24 that will serve low income women.

Rise Women’s Legal Centre, at 456 West Broadway, near Cambie Street, will provide a full range of legal services with a focus in family law. It will be staffed by upper-year law students who are closely supervised by onsite attorneys. Services will include filing documents in court and representing clients in their hearings.

“Legal aid for family law matters has been drastically cut back since 2002, so much so that only very low income people qualify, and even those who qualify only get services for high conflict cases,” according to West Coast LEAF, which is dedicated to promoting women’s equality through the law.

“A woman’s capacity to be independent often depends on her ability to resolve disputes over spousal support, child custody and property division – all issues that have a tremendous impact on women’s equality, and the safety of women and their families.”

Owl Can’t Stop Hugging The Man Who Rescued Her After Bad Accident

Owl Hugs Man released Wild At Heart Rescue

This owl couldn’t stop hugging her favorite human when he finally returned after a trip.

Doug Pojeky nursed GiGi back to health after the bird suffered a head injury when it ran into a car. No one thought the bird could recover, but Pojeky, president of the Wild at Heart Rescue center in Mississippi, never gave up hope.

During GiGi’s extended recovery period, Doug had to leave for a few days. The depressed owl moped around the center until he returned — then gave him a big hug.

GiGi rested her head right on his shoulder—and wrapped her wings around him. It’s another example of why Doug is known as the “bird of prey whisperer” by rehabilitators in the area.

John Oliver Buys $15 Million In Medical Debt, Then Forgives It on TV (WATCH)

Medical Debt John Oliver screenshot HBO

In what he called the biggest giveaway in television history, HBO’s John Oliver has paid off $15 million in overdue medical debt.

Oliver’s show, Last Week Tonight, set out to expose the shady practices of debt collectors, and in the end protected 9,000 people from annoying, harassing, and even illegal collection agency calls and letters.

Oliver and his team paid just $50 to register themselves as a debt collection company — Central Asset Recovery Professionals (CARP) — and then started buying debt for as little as four-tenths of a penny for every dollar.

RELATED: On 4th Anniversary of “Occupy Wall Street” a Stellar Outcome: $30Mil in Debt Canceled for Americans

Companies are willing to sell old, uncollected debts for next to nothing, but these prices are so low because the debt has actually expired, and the people who owed it are no longer required by law to pay it.

This loophole allowed CARP to acquire almost $15 million worth of medical debt for just $60,000.

Oliver wanted to show how easy it is for unscrupulous debt collectors to abuse the system. They often buy expired debt because if they convince a debtor to make a payment, it can put all his debt back on the table.

CARP then transferred the debt it purchased to RIP Medical Debt — a group that specializes in retiring medical bills without tax issues for the debtors.

Oliver’s staff believes the biggest giveaway prior to the June 5 show was when Oprah Winfrey gave every person in her studio audience a new car.

Hitting a giant red button, Oliver signaled the transfer of the debt to RIP at the end of his show and declared he had topped Oprah’s record giveaway.

JPMorgan Chase unveiled a $4 million grant last week to expand young people’s access to economic opportunity in Detroit. Building on the firm’s $100 million commitment to Detroit’s economic recovery, this three-year grant is designed to increase dramatically the number of young people graduating from the city’s high schools with opportunities to secure well-paying, high-demand jobs. JPMorgan Chase joins the Skillman Foundation and the Ford Motor Company in this initiative to connect 10,000 Detroit high school students to career education and work experiences over the next three years.

“Building off a model proven in other communities, the collaborative approach being taken by the city to solve tough issues is reflected in their commitment to better align education with the skills that growing business sectors need,” said Chauncy Lennon, Head of Workforce Initiatives, JPMorgan Chase.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said, “As Detroit’s turnaround continues, we need to make sure our young people are prepared with the education and skills to take advantage of opportunities, and JPMorgan Chase’s investment will help better prepare high school graduates for careers in Detroit’s economic recovery.”

Over the next three years, the grant will help 10,000 young people in Detroit earn credentials, qualifying them for career pathways and college, by focusing on several important and growing regional industries, including advanced manufacturing, health care, information technology, digital communications, engineering and public service.

Schools that are adopting a career-oriented approach using Linked Learning in Detroit include the Ben Carson High School of Science and Medicine, Westside Academy, Cody Academy of Medicine and Community Health, Cody Academy of Public Leadership, Cody Academy of Information Technology, Osborn Academy of Math, Science and Technology, Osborn Evergreen Academy of Design and Alternative, Detroit Edison Public School Academy, Mumford, Central High School and Henry Ford High School.

Detroit has the highest youth unemployment rate (30 percent) of the 25 largest U.S. metro areas, with Detroit’s lower-income African-American neighborhoods hit hardest.

In 2016, the firm will be announcing additional grants for career and technical programs in U.S. cities with the goal of increasing the number of students, especially low-income young people, who earn meaningful postsecondary and workforce credentials that are aligned with the needs of emerging industries.

Global Terrorist Attacks Down 13 Percent in 2015

saudi-military-soldier-CCTV-youtube

The State Department reported Thursday the number of terror-related attacks around the world dropped by 13 percent in 2015.

Additionally, the annual report measured a 14 percent drop in fatalities from terror attacks. This represents the first decline in total attacks and resulting fatalities worldwide since 2012.

The reduction in attacks was mostly attributed to fewer attacks in Iraq, Pakistan and Nigeria.

Also significant was the sizeable reduction in the amount of territory held by the Islamic State in Iraq, as well as the finances and foreign terrorist fighters available to it.

The statistics, which are compiled by the University of Maryland and independent of the U.S. government, showed that 55 percent of all attacks took place in five countries: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nigeria.

Evangelical Christians Reach Out to Muslims to Combat Islamophobia

cross-and-mosque-Linda perkins copyright-onetime use only

Every day for five years, youth pastor Rich Reaves has arrived to work in the shadow of a cross and a crescent moon. There, at his Houston church, he and senior pastor Elliott Scott discuss ways they can live out “true Christianity” by loving their neighbors–in this case, members of a mosque next door.

Meanwhile, across town, a dozen religious leaders from the Islamic and Christian communities meet to find common ground and discuss ways to educate Houstonians on “true Islam,” in order to address growing concerns over Islamophobia.

While recent news reports focus on the ISIS threat, and verbal attacks made by Christians against Muslims, a less reported story is going on behind the scenes: members of the two faiths coming together in the name of peace.

ALSO:  Christians Protect Mosques on Fri., Muslims Guard Churches on Sunday

For Reaves at Lifepath church, the first step in reaching out to his Muslim neighbors was to make contact.

“I couldn’t figure out how to reach them,” Reaves said, noting that there was no signage around the mosque’s gated complex to even indicate what the name of the mosque was. “I finally called the phone number posted for deliveries.”

He learned that the mosque was planning an event that would bring thousands of Muslim visitors to the neighborhood. Rather than recoil, Reaves took the opportunity to offer help. The church offered its soccer field and parking lot to make room for the visitors–and teams of youth passed out bottled water to those heading toward the mosque. Although Lifepath is an evangelical church, they made no attempts to proselytize. They focused on simple acts of service and words of kindness–and were given gratitude in return.

The path to interfaith cooperation has been cobbled together in a different way on the other side of Houston by Bishop James Dixon II and M.J. Kahn.

When Dixon, the pastor of a large African American church called the Community of Faith, put together a citywide faith-based relief effort for Tax Day Flood victims in April, he decided to invite Islamic leaders to participate alongside area pastors. Out of this response to tragedy grew a discussion on how to build a bridge of understanding between Christians and Muslims to combat Islamophobia.

Dixon said that as an African American, he could relate to being the target of prejudice, and so he felt compelled to stand with moderate Muslims who have become recent targets of vilification. Recognizing that the root of prejudice is often ignorance, he and Khan, president of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, are now working together on a summit to educate the public about Islam.

“There are a lot of misconceptions about Islam,” Kahn said. “Most people aren’t afraid of Islam itself. They are afraid of the unknown.”

Their hope is that with greater love and greater understanding, there will be a greater chance for peace.
