Scientists Have Developed New Material That is as Flexible as Elastic But Tough as Steel

A new high-tech fiber that combines the elasticity of rubber with the strength of a metal has been developed by US scientists.

The tougher unbreakable material mimics the human skin but also conducts electricity and heals itself after use, important factors for stretchable electronics and soft robotics.

It could also be used for packaging materials or next-generation textiles.

“A good way of explaining the material is to think of rubber bands and metal wires,” said Professor Michael Dickey at North Carolina State University.

CHECK OUTSurgeons Successfully Implant World’s First 3D-Printed Rib – and They Plan On Doing Even More in the Future

“A rubber band can stretch very far, but it doesn’t take much force to stretch it. A metal wire requires a lot of force to stretch it, but it can’t take much strain – it breaks before you can stretch it very far. Our fibers have the best of both worlds.”

“Tough materials found in nature maintain the structural integrity of many biological tissues against external loads. Collagen, for example, toughens skin in a network comprising bundled fibers that quickly and effectively dissipate energy and prevent cuts from spreading. Human muscle is strengthened by the biomolecule titin, which unfolds reversibly to absorb tensile loads.

“These types of tissues not only need to be stretchable to accommodate tensile deformation but should also be tough to avoid mechanical failure.

“The ability to mimic these properties is important for both practical functions (for example packaging and protective equipment) and emerging applications that undergo elongation (for example stretchable electronics, soft robotics, and electronic skin).”

WATCHSmart Caption Glasses Allow Deaf Audience Members to Watch Live Theater Performers Directly

The new fiber has a gallium metal core surrounded by an elastic polymer sheath, which is far tougher than either the metal wire or the polymer sheath on its own.

When placed under stress, the fibre has the strength of the metal core – but when the metal breaks, the fiber doesn’t fail as the polymer sheath absorbs the strain between the breaks in the metal and transfers the stress back to the metal core.

This response is similar to the way human tissue holds together broken bones.

“Every time the metal core breaks it dissipates energy, allowing the fibre to continue to absorb energy as it elongates,” says Dickey. “Instead of snapping in two when stretched, it can stretch up to seven times its original length before failure, while causing many additional breaks in the wire along the way.

MORE‘It’s Not Quite the Ant-Man Suit’ But Researchers Discover How to Shrink Objects to 1000th Their Original Size

“To think of it another way, the fiber won’t snap and drop a heavy weight. Instead, by releasing energy repeatedly through internal breaks, the fibre lowers the weight slowly and steadily.”

The gallium core is also conductive, although it loses its conductivity when the internal core breaks – but the fibers can also be reused by melting the metal cores back together.

The study’s corresponding author said: “There’s a lot of interest in engineering materials to mimic the toughness of skin – and we have developed a fibre that has surpassed the toughness of skin yet is still elastic like skin.

RELATEDScientists Create Super-Thin ‘Sheet’ That Could Charge Our Phones By Harvesting Wifi From the Air

“We used gallium for this proof of concept work, but the fibers could be tuned to alter their mechanical properties, or to retain functionality at higher temperatures, by using different materials in the core and shell.

“This is only a proof of concept, but it holds a lot of potential. We are interested to see how these fibers could be used in soft robotics or when woven into textiles for various applications.”

The study was published in the journal Science Advances.

Proud Dad Mic’d His 4-Year-Old Playing Hockey and the Results Are Comedy GOAL!

Jeremy Rupke loves watching his 4-year-old son during hockey practice – but he couldn’t help but wonder what the youngster was thinking about out on the ice.

So as a means of getting a sneak peek into his son’s inner dialogue, Rupke placed a microphone inside of the youngster’s jersey – and the results were amusing, to say the least.

Mason, the pint-sized skater in question, can be heard encouraging his friends to take naps; blaming an “old fat paint can” for his falls; and longing for a McDonald’s happy meal.

He can also be heard offering the kind of quality hockey commentary that only a 4-year-old can present.

WATCHGroom Can’t Contain His Laughter When Bearded Best Man Shows Up in the Dress Where His Bride Should Be

Rupke later posted a montage of his son’s quips to Twitter where it was viewed millions of times.

“I mic’d up my 4 year old at Timbits Hockey so I could finally understand what the heck he was doing out there. It was… interesting,” Rupke wrote on Twitter.

Social media users left hundreds of their own empathetic comments for Mason with one guy saying: “I’m a 57-year-old beer leaguer and I’ve probably said most of those things out there [too].”

Instead of Wasting Trillions of Gallons of Water Every Year, ‘World’s First’ System Dyes Fabrics With CO2

Rather than allowing the fashion industry to continue wasting trillions of gallons of water every year, this Dutch company is giving clothing companies a sustainable new makeover.

DyeCoo is a Netherlands-based business that uses CO2 to dye fabrics instead of water.

According to recent sustainability reports, it can take anywhere from 25 to 40 gallons water to dye 2 pounds of fabric. Collectively, the textile industry uses almost 25 trillion gallons of water every year.

DyeCoo, on the other hand, uses a machine that dyes fabrics with pressurized CO2, which allows dyes to quickly dissolve and penetrate the textile – all without the use of water or chemicals.

LOOKEngineer Creates Green Oasis by Growing Glaciers in the Desert

Each machine is estimated to save up to 8.4 million gallons (32 million liters) of water, roughly 176 tons of processing chemicals, and untold amounts of energy every year.

Additionally, since the machine uses a closed loop system, 95% of their CO2 can be cleaned and recycled after each dye cycle.

The technology is already being used by companies such as IKEA, Nike, Adidas, and Peak Performance – and with more and more corporations being pressured to go green, the water-free coloring system is likely to catch on quick.

In Preparation for 10-Hour Flight, Thoughtful Mom Hands Out Goodie Bags on Behalf of Her 4-Month-old

A mother’s “touching gesture” has been shared across social media after she was pictured handing out gifts to her fellow airline passengers in anticipation of a 10-hour flight.

Dave Corona was a recipient of one of these gifts during his flight from Seoul to San Francisco earlier this month.

Corona snapped a photo of the young mom handing out 200 goodie bags containing candy, earplugs, and an explanatory note to each of her fellow passengers.

LOOKStrangers Offer Flood of Support for White Mom Who’s ‘Clueless’ About Styling Black Daughter’s Hair

The note was written on behalf of her infant child, reading: “Hello, I’m Junwoo and I’m 4 months old.

“Today, I am going to the U.S. with my mom and grandma to see my aunt. I’m a little bit nervous and [scared] because it’s my first flight, which means that I may cry or make too much noise. I will try to go quietly, though I can’t make any promises… Please excuse me.

“So my mum prepared little goodie bag for you! It is some candies and earplugs. Please use them when it’s too noisy because of me. Enjoy your trip. Thank you.”

Even though parents are not (and probably should not be) expected to hand out gifts as an apology for normal baby behavior, Corona took several photos of the goodie bag and the mother so he could post them to social media.

“A very touching gesture by the mother, but as you know when you have kids, expect the unexpected – not a peep out of the kid,” wrote Corona.

Do You Regret Not Saving Enough Family Keepsakes? Poll Says Most Parents Do (But Don’t Worry)

Between home movies, school art projects, childhood books and all the other things worth holding on to, the average parent has amassed 1,293 keepsakes—so you don’t need to lament not doing more to preserve memories of your kids’ childhoods.

A new survey looked at parental sentimentality and examined all the things that moms and dads treasure—long after the chicks have flown from the nest.

Photographs make up the bulk of items that have been deemed worth saving, with moms and dads putting an average of 21 photographs of their children on display in the home.

Many keepsakes revolve around a child’s “firsts”; more than 6 in 10 parents surveyed have hair from their child’s first haircut, as well as baby teeth and ultrasound images.

RELATEDThe Science of The Magic Hour  Why We Should Read to Each Other – Especially Our Kids

The study of 2,000 American parents of school-aged children, commissioned by Canon U.S.A. and conducted by OnePoll, found that it can be hard to part with items of sentimental value.

The average household has five boxes of keepsakes, and six in 10 parents wish they had more of those items on display, instead of stashed under the bed.

For instance, children bring home an average of 47 art projects a year from elementary school, and parents report keeping 35 percent of them. If only those projects were in frames and not in the closet!

MOREHoping to Be a Grandma One Day, She Bought a Tiny Dress – 7 Years Later, it Turns into Sweet Coincidence

With all the keepsakes parents have amassed, half of them plan to make a scrapbook or place their printed photographs in a photo album.

Parents hold on to keepsakes for a variety of reasons, but 71 percent reported collecting them with the intent to show their children later in life. Many plan to eventually give the collected keepsakes to their child.

The items serve to remind parents of happy memories—and looking through the collected items can immediately make them feel proud of their children.

Maybe that’s why, even with all the keepsakes parents do have, 53 percent of those polled regret not having more.

Man Buys $540 Worth of Cookies So Girl Scouts Can Get Out of the Cold Weather

Even though consumers go crazy for Girl Scout cookies, most people would not buy $540 worth – but that is exactly what this Good Samaritan did earlier this week.

The man didn’t buy the cookies to feed his Samoa addiction, however; he bought them to help two Girl Scouts get out of the cold weather.

Maya and Emerson had been peddling their boxed treats outside of a store in Greenville, South Carolina when they were approached by a man who bought 7 packs of cookies for $40.

The man then returned shortly after his first sale and said he wanted to buy their entire stock of cookies so they could escape the chilly winter night.

In total, the man spent $540 on Girl Scout cookies.

Kayla Dillard posted a photo of the youngsters with the man to Facebook so she could praise him for his kindness.

“He came back to the table and said ‘pack up all of your cookies. I’m taking them all so y’all can get out of this cold’,” wrote Dillard. “$540 he spent on cookies. What an amazing soul!!!!”

Parkinson’s Researchers Now Have $24 Million To Keep Going Thanks to Funding From Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox has just announced that his foundation is giving away over $24 million in grants for researching and treating Parkinson’s disease.

The actor, who is best known for his roles in Back to the Future and Spin City, was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease shortly before he retired from his career on the silver screen in 2000.

Later that same year, he launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has since become the world’s largest and most acclaimed nonprofit for Parkinson’s research and advocacy.

Over the course of the last 19 years, the charity has funded more than $800 million in Parkinson’s research – and they just announced that they are giving away $24 million more in grant funding.

RELATEDFirst Parkinson’s Patient to Get Unique Stem Cell Treatment Could Pave the Way for Many More by 2023

The funding is being distributed in the form of 127 new grant awards for various projects seeking to understand, treat, diagnose, and measure the progression of the disease.

One of the more notable projects to receive a grant from the foundation is a New Zealand research initiative from the University of Auckland which is investigating the genetics of Parkinson’s disease “from an unusual and promising angle.”

Mutations in the gene known as GBA – short for glucocerebrosidase beta acid – are the most common genetic risk factors for Parkinson’s, affecting about 10% of the more than 6 million people estimated to have the disease.

WATCHAlan Alda Announces Parkinson’s Diagnosis, But He Wants to Use It to Inspire People

Associate professor of molecular science Justin O’Sullivan and his team at the university’s Liggins Institute will use a powerful 3D genome-mapping tool they devised to reveal the connections of GBA to other genes. They think parts of the gene may be acting as “DNA switches” and disrupting the functioning of other genes that GBA comes into contact with through the way that DNA is coiled inside cells.

DNA, the long molecules containing our entire genetic blueprint, are around two meters long when unwound, but packed into cell nuclei measuring only 100th of a millimeter across. Through this coiling, segments that are far apart when the DNA is stretched out, come into contact with each other.

O’Sullivan and his team are at the forefront of international efforts to show that these spatial connections can change the functioning of genes and potentially play a role in a wide range of diseases.

MOREDiabetes Drug ‘Significantly Reverses Memory Loss’ in Mice With Alzheimer’s

“Most research into GBA’s role in Parkinson’s focuses on whether GBA mutations hamper the activity of a particular enzyme, a member of the cell’s ‘cleaning crew’ that degrades damaged or surplus cell parts,” Dr O’Sullivan says.

“We’re coming at it from a totally different angle – we’re looking into whether ‘switches’ inside GBA mutations turn up or down the functioning of other genes that they come into contact with. We think some of the more unusual findings about GBA might be able to be explained if it has connections to other genes.

LOOKParkinson’s Pen For Patients Who Want to Keep Writing Christmas Cards

“If we are right, we will identify a network of interrelated Parkinson’s genes. This may help advance research efforts for therapies, and bring together previously confusing or unrecognized connections.”

“For us, this grant is an amazing opportunity to investigate a disorder that has a huge impact on people. We hope to make insights that ultimately make a real difference to patients.”

When Grocery Store Accidentally Leaves Doors Unlocked, Honest Customer Leaves $5 for Tomatoes

When a grocery store accidentally left their doors unlocked during a national holiday, their shoppers reacted with nothing but classic Canadian kindness and honesty.

The Food Basics supermarket in Kingston, Ontario was scheduled to be closed on February 18th in honor of Family Day. Due to a mistake from management, however, their doors were left unlocked.

Upon entering the empty store, several curious shoppers were confused by the lack of employees.

Though this would have been a perfect time to take advantage of the five-finger discount, only one customer reportedly left the store with groceries in hand – but not before he left some money on the counter.

“So I asked ‘Hey, buddy! You just taking some tomatoes?’ He said ‘I left $5 on the counter.’”

The customer then called Kingston Police to the scene where they waited onsite until management arrived just after 4PM.

Mother and Daughter Are Saved From Teetering Car Thanks to a Teen’s Snapchat App

SWNS
SWNS

Though older generations may be quick to scoff over the use of social media, a mother and daughter were recently rescued from their crashed car thanks to Snapchat.

38-year-old Gemma Fairweather and her 7-year-old daughter Martha were left teetering on the edge of a water-filled embankment after their car veered off of a country lane in England earlier this month.

The traumatizing incident happened just after 10pm while Fairweather was driving from Lowestoft, Suffolk to her home in Wymondham, Norfolk.

Fairweather had just dipped her headlights for an oncoming car when her Citroen ran off the road and rolled down a verge, narrowly missing a cluster of trees that took out the left wing mirror and smashed the passenger window.

MOREAfter Days Spent Lost in Freezing Rain, Rescued 3-Year-old Thanks a Bear for Allegedly Keeping Him Safe

Fairweather then contacted her boyfriend, Graham Potts, who lives just five minutes away from the crash site in Lowestoft. She asked him to call emergency services and help them escape, but the car was hidden from the road.

What followed was a frantic 20-minute search during which the stranded car could not be found by rescue crews.

“I was calling the emergency services and was giving the road name and my location according to [navigation] but they were on a completely different road,” said Fairweather. “Cars were driving past us, completely unaware that we were there. Honking the horn and flashing my lights was doing nothing.

Martha Bignall and Sam Potts – SWNS

Thankfully, Potts’s son Sam had the bright idea to use his Snapchat app in order to track down the mother-daughter duo.

Using the app’s geo-location Snap Map tool, the 15-year-old managed to pinpoint Fairweather’s exact location and alert emergency responders to her whereabouts.

RELATEDWhen Teacher Sees Boy Cycling Down the Highway, She Turns Around and Helps to Save His Dad’s Life

“When Sam said to use Snapchat, I sent him message saying ‘can you see me?’ and then Graham was on the phone to emergency services guiding them to us,” said Fairweather. “The fire engines were only able to see the car because they were higher up and could see over the verge.

“It was very dramatic. The window had broken on Martha’s side and I could see the river through her window as we were teetering on the edge of the verge.

Gemma Fairweather with Martha Bignall and boyfriend Graham Potts – SWNS

“It was absolutely freezing and it was pitch black. It felt like we were there for a lifetime but I called Graham at 10:10 and we were out the car at about 10:50.

“It was incredible how we were rescued by just a simple app.

LOOKFrozen Cat That Was Found Unresponsive, Buried in Snow Makes Miraculous Recovery

“Martha was absolutely terrified – she said things to me that will stay with me for the rest of my life, but she was incredibly brave.”

The country lane has no barrier or street lights and Fairweather said she had no idea how lucky they were until they saw the car in the sunlight the following day.

SWNS

“We couldn’t get out because the car would have toppled over,” says Fairweather. “It was epic really. We’re very lucky.

“I can’t thank the emergency services enough – they were incredible.”

Fairweather has warned motorists to be careful while driving in bad weather, adding on Facebook: “Note to self, never take the back roads.”

IKEA Develops Remote-Controlled Boats That Can Collect Floating Garbage From Polluted Rivers

IKEA is continuing their efforts to clean up the planet by designing remote-controlled boats that can tidy up floating garbage in lakes and rivers.

The Swedish furniture company modeled their Good Ship IKEA boats after their SMÅKRYP bath toy set.

Each boat can salvage up to 44 pounds of trash at a time. Weighing 150 pounds and measuring in at 10-feet long, the boats could prove to be a fun and innovative solution for keeping the rivers free of garbage.

Earlier this month, two of the boats were deployed into Deptford Creek in southeast London as a means of tidying up the river and celebrating the opening of IKEA’s newest branch in Greenwich.

The furniture store partnered with Creekside Education Trust to raise public awareness for water pollution by inviting pedestrians and school kids to pilot the boats up and down the creek for an entire week.

Though IKEA has not disclosed whether they will continue producing the vessels, the two boats from Greenwich will continue their services under the management of Hubbub, a nonprofit dedicated to encouraging sustainability.

Additionally, all of the trash that was collected from the creek will be turned into a sculpture which will be placed in IKEA’s new Greenwich store.

Dove is Issuing Thousands of Dollars in Grants to U.S. Dads Without Access to Paid Paternity Leave

As a means of giving American fathers the chance to spend time with their newborn children, Dove is giving away multi-thousand dollar grants for working dads who don’t have access to paid paternity leave.

The cosmetic company created the Paternity Leave Fund with the goal of giving away at least $1 million in paternity leave grants to proud fathers over the course of the next two years.

Dads who are interested in applying for one of Dove’s $5,000 paternity leave grants can fill out an application on the company’s website with an explanation as to how the grant will help him and his family.

The grant program will run until December 31st, 2020.

Most taxis aren’t designed with extreme comfort or decoration in mind, but this London cab is being hailed as the “world’s coziest taxi”.

The one-of-a kind taxi has been decked out to resemble a country log cabin so Brits can feel better about going to work on chilly February mornings.

The interior is almost unrecognizable from an ordinary London black cab, with blue velvet curtains hanging on the windows and screen divider.

SWNS

An imitation fireplace has even been mounted to the passenger-side door accompanied by a stack of logs to complete the effect.

The mobile log cabin – which was created by UK boiler manufacturer Baxi – is now available for booking via their Twitter page.

To book a free ride, passengers need to Tweet at with their postcode and preferred pick up time.

“Getting a cab rather than walking or taking public transport can often feel like an unnecessary luxury,” said Lewis. “But because ours won’t cost a penny, it means commuters can ride in absolute comfort, totally guilt-free.

“We’ve used all of our boiler and heating know-how to make a small space feel as warm and inviting as possible – with fantastic results.”

Man Has Donated Hundreds of Dollars to Charity Simply By Rescuing Coins from the Street During Daily Walks

Instead of letting loose change go to waste on the streets, a 77-year-old Korean man has collected hundreds of dollars worth of coins left on city sidewalks.

Over the course of the last 12 years, Young S. New has taken regular strolls through the west end of Montreal so he can search for abandoned Canadian currency.

In addition to his walks proving to be a great source of exercise, New has also donated every cent of his recovered treasure to those in need.

He used to split his coin donations between the Gazette Christmas Fund and his church – but now he simply gives all of the money to older homeless people who he sees on the street.

“It’s not my money. I just found it on the street,” New told CBC of his rescued coins. “Why don’t they care? I do care. It is the property of Canada. It’s part of the Canadian economy.”

New says he was inspired to start searching for loose change on the streets because of something his father used to say to him: every cent counts because if a person is one cent short of a million dollars, they are still not a millionaire.

He now takes this tidbit of wisdom to heart by donating the coins to the city’s homeless in hopes that every piece of currency will “help prolong their life a little”.

New’s labor of love has spurred other young people in the city to join him in his treasure hunt for coins on the street so they can donate them to charities of their own choosing. He was also given the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 as a means of thanking him for his volunteer efforts – but he only hopes that his recognition will inspire people to take better care of their coins.

“That is what I learned from my father in Korea when I was young: respect the penny,” New told CBC.

Shelby the dog is the shining star of her own “rags to riches” story. The 2-year-old pup went from hunting for food through piles of trash to winning the hearts of moviegoers around the world.

Shelby was first spotted sifting through garbage at a landfill near Nashville, Tennessee two years ago.

Megan Buhler, who is a Cheatham County Animal Control officer, had been dispatched nearby when she saw the malnourished mutt anxiously searching for scraps.

“There were lots of cars driving by—I mean, it was heavy traffic,” Buhler told The Washington Post.  “She was so scared, and she finally came right up to me, and I was able to put her in my truck.”

Shelby was then whisked away to a local animal shelter where she was fed and vaccinated. Most importantly, they snapped some snazzy professional photographs of the pup’s smiling face as part of their daily efforts to improve adoption rates.

Little did they know those photographs would become the glamour shots that would land Shelby on the silver screen.

Meanwhile in Hollywood, filmmakers were preparing to start work on a new movie called A Dog’s Way Home, based on a novel under the same title. The flick is about a pup named Bella who is paired with a doting human companion. When Bella is suddenly separated from her owner, she embarks on a 400-mile journey to get back to his side.

MOREGirl Who Could Die From Any Strong Smell is Saved by a Specially-Trained Dog

As filmmakers began their search for the perfect dog to play Bella, the book’s author insisted that the canine actor be a rescue dog in order to properly advocate for the novel’s message. The producers then hired Teresa Ann Miller, an experienced dog trainer who has recruited and worked with hundreds of Hollywood dogs, to find suitable candidates among America’s many shelters.

Miller found three prospective dogs to play Bella – but none of them panned out. Now showing in theaters, Shelby has fetched heaps of praise for the way she carried the humor and drama on her little shoulders.

Shelby is taking a break from Tinsel Town, but she’s still winning hearts through her work: She now lives with her trainer in California and spends her days working as a therapy dog in hospitals, special needs schools, and veterans’ homes.
