Amusing Tale of Grandma Defeating Rabid Bobcat With Her Bare Hands is ‘the Kind of Story We Need Right Now’

This larger-than-life tale of a warrior grandmother defending herself against a rabid bobcat is not just an inspirational goldmine – it’s also hilarious.

46-year-old DeDe Phillips was standing in the driveway of her Hart County home in Georgia when she saw a mangy bobcat approaching her.

Sensing that it was rabid, Phillips took a determined stance to defend herself—while not waking her grandchild sleeping inside.

She succeeded quite spectacularly.

Cyclist Carries Injured Stray Dog to Safety On His Back, Then Bumps into a Stranger Who Instantly Adopts it

A puppy that suffered an unfortunate injury has been given a lucky break, thanks to some guys on their mountain bikes who happened to find it in the woods.

Jarrett Little and a few other cyclists were riding through a forested area in Columbus, Georgia when they stopped to take a break. As they recuperated, a dog limped out of the woods.

Jarrett suspects that the dog had been hit by a car because it was malnourished, and it was sporting road rash and a broken leg. After he and his friends gave the dog some food and water, they puzzled over how to help the dog.

Since they were in the woods, they couldn’t get a car in to escort the canine to safety, yet they didn’t want to leave it alone in the forest either. Jarrett then took it upon himself to hoist the dog onto his back and ride the 7 miles back to town.

They stopped at a local bike shop and wanted to get the dog more food and water. Fortunately, Andrea Shaw was in the store.

Andrea, who coincidentally was in Georgia for work purposes, experienced an instant connection with the dog. The woman was so taken with him, she immediately adopted him, paid for his medical bills, and even found a local organization that could comfortably transport the pup to her horse farm in Maine.

In light of his astounding story, she decided to name him “Columbo” after the town where Jarrett found him.

Columbo’s rescue garnered so much media attention, Shaw created a Facebook page for him called “Adventures of Columbo”. She now uses the page to report on his recovery process and budding new relationships with the other animals on her farm.

The cyclist is delighted by Columbo’s progress, and calls his lucky encounter with Shaw pure fate.

“Had I been five mins earlier or five mins later, we wouldn’t have crossed paths with her,” the cyclist told CBS News. “It’s pretty cool how far he’s come.”

Man Runs Backwards Through Ultra Marathons So He Can Help the Future of Honeybees

Running ultra marathons is impressive enough; but running backwards through one is astounding – and that’s exactly what Farai Chinomwe did for the sake of honeybees.

The South African beekeeper first discovered his knack for running backwards while returning home from a bee removal and his car broke down—with a crateful of anxious pollinators in the back seat.

As Chinomwe pushed his car, he found that he had more strength when he turned around and pushed the vehicle backwards.

From that point forward, he realized that his unique penchant for running backwards might be a way to coax people into think about honeybees.

RELATEDState is Boosting Bee Populations By Giving Free Hives and Equipment to Beekeepers

Chinomwe has since run dozens of ultra marathons all while facing the wrong way – and for the record, an ultra marathon is any marathon that is longer than the typical 26-mile distance (42 kilometers).

His peculiar habit has proved surprisingly effective in drawing awareness to the plight of honeybees and how people can help. Chinomwe, who runs a bee removal service called Blessed Bee Africa, uses the attention to educate youngsters on beekeeping and how they can nourish local pollinator populations.

How to Love Your Melting Pot Heritage and Embrace the Power of Diversity

The Lesson: Having a diverse background is not something that should hold you back in today’s society – in fact, it’s an advantage that should propel you forward. Rebeca Hwang talks about the importance and significance of having a diverse background and all of the benefits that it brings to your personal identity.

Notable Excerpt: “Now, today my identity quest is no longer to find my tribe. It’s more about allowing myself to embrace all of the possible permutations of myself and cultivating diversity within me and not just around me. Man is Determined to Thank Grieving Homeless ‘Angel’ Who Cared for His Lost Dog

Rick Darge was frantic over the disappearance of his dog Maya – so when a homeless “angel” ensured the pup’s safe return, Darge became determined to thank him properly.

Mel, who is a 9-month-old rat terrier mix, ran away from Darge’s office in East Hollywood, California earlier this month, and it didn’t take long for her to make some friends amongst some homeless men named James and Andy.

The two men have been living out James’s car for the last few months; and in addition to enduring the woes of homelessness, James has been heartbroken over the recent death of his own canine companion.

So when Andy found Maya wandering the city streets, he decided to try and cheer his friend by presenting the dog as a gift.

RELATEDBusinessman is So Moved By Homeless Man’s Story, He Offers Him a Job On the Spot

“This man loves dogs and as soon as he got Maya, he fell in love,” says Darge. “[But] after a few hours, James pulled Maya’s harness off and noticed her dog tag with her name and my number on it.

“He said that once he saw that she belonged to someone, he was devastated and knew what I was going through.”

Since James didn’t have a cell phone, he had to wait until the next day to call Darge and tell him that the pup was in good hands. They coordinated a meetup, and true to his word, James brought Maya back to Darge in perfect health.

MOREHomeless Are Getting Six-Figure Jobs in Poor Neighborhood Overrun by Tech Companies

“One thing that stuck out for me the most is when my Mom and I were screaming for joy while holding Maya, James’s buddy Andy kept saying to him, ‘Look at what you did, James. Look at their faces, man. You did this.’

“While Andy is saying this, I see a proud James, tears in his eyes, soaking up this moment of love. I saw a man who was at a crossroads in life. This was a redemption day for him to do the right thing. To be the hero. I felt it. He felt it. We all felt it. It was so powerful of a moment.”

Darge consistently tried to give James $200 for his trouble. Even though he needed the money, he kept turning it down until Darge firmly said that he wouldn’t take no for an answer.

“James started to cry,” says Darge. “He needed the money but didn’t want to make it about that. He was so grateful.”

But $200 wasn’t enough for Darge – so he created a GoFundMe page to raise money for the compassionate rough sleeper. Since he created the campaign ten days ago, it has raised over $5,000.

“I can’t fully explain what I’m feeling right now through words,” Darge wrote in the description. “All I must say is that my faith in people just got a whole lot better. I often find that those who have nothing in this world often have the most to give. Lessons were learned today for everyone. And the biggest lesson for me was that you can’t put a price on a good heart.”

New Study Says That Expressing and Receiving Appreciation is a Lot Better for Us Than We Think

Have you ever been too shy to express gratitude towards someone? Or you’ve felt too awkward to phrase your appreciation for something? Well, this new study says that you should try not to worry about it so much.

A pair of researchers have published the results of a series of trials in which they studied how people gave and received letters of gratitude. What they found was that expressing and receiving appreciation increased well-being for both parties – but people’s self-consciousness also made them less likely to express their appreciation in the first place.

In the experiments, the researchers asked hundreds of participants to write an email to someone close to them expressing their appreciation for the relationship and naming a specific example of how that person bettered their lives. The writers were then asked to predict the recipient’s possible reactions to the letter.

Across all races, gender, and age, the writers consistently underestimated the positive impact that the email would have on the recipient. They also assumed that the recipient would feel more awkward and uncomfortable over the letters than they actually were. Contrary to the writer’s belief, the letter recipients were consistently more appreciative, warm, surprised, and understanding to the emails than the writers predicted them to be.

RELATEDHow to Follow Negative News Without Getting Depressed

“Expected awkwardness and mood were both correlated with participants’ willingness to express gratitude,” says the study results, which were published in the journal Psychological Science.

“Wise decisions are guided by an accurate assessment of the expected value of action. Underestimating the value of prosocial actions, such as expressing gratitude, may keep people from engaging in behavior that would maximize their own—and others’—well-being.”

So next time you’re feeling hesitant about expressing your appreciation for your friends, family, and relationships, just remember that it will most likely go a lot better than you think.

When Cop With Cancer Refuses to Stop Working, Dozens of City Workers Donate Their Sick Days

Editor’s Note: this town was previously featured on GNN as one of the finalists for the Top 10 Nicest Places in America competition from Reader’s Digest.

Cancer is not going to keep this dedicated police officer from doing the job he loves – and his community is not about to let his job keep him from getting cancer treatments, either.

Chris Kudla was diagnosed with a rare form of stage four kidney cancer back in November 2017, the day before his 46th birthday.

It was also eight months after he had started working for the Riverside Police Department in Illinois.

Despite having to attend doctor’s appointments and chemotherapy sessions twice a month, Kudla told his police chief that he did not want to stop working – and the chief told him that they would try to make it work.

RELATEDFarmers Stay Silent During Auction So Young Man Can Win the Bid on His Long-Lost Family Farm

The primary problem was that Kudla had not worked at the police department long enough to accumulate enough sick days for his treatment. So as a means of helping their police brother, the other officers at the department donated all of their sick days to Kudla.

Then, municipality workers, local civil servants, and city staff members all joined together in donating their sick days to Kudla.

To date, he has received roughly 6 months worth of sick days.

MOREAfter Tweeting About ‘Worst’ Sales Day, Independent Bookseller is Overwhelmed with Support

Additionally, the police department started raising money to support Kudla’s family through a GoFundMe campaign. Over the course of seven months, it has raised $41,000.

“Everybody without hesitation stepped up to help out,” Kudla told CBS News. “Sometimes when you start to lose faith in humanity and you think that this world’s gone down the wrong path and there ain’t no coming back, something like this happens.”

This Jolly King Has Lived in His Sandcastle for the Last 22 Years

Who needs a house when you can have a castle?

Marcio Matolias, also known as “King Marcio”, has lived in an elaborate sandcastle of his own creation for the last 22 years.

His castle is located on the gorgeous beaches of Rio de Janiero, Brazil. Due to the nature of his home, he lives rent-free – which is handy, considering the city’s average price of rent is higher than the average income.

Marcio makes money by selling books from inside his sandcastle and accepting donations from tourists who take pictures of his home. When he’s not working on his sandy abode, he says he enjoys playing beach golf and reading.

Marcio cooks his food using a simple portable stove and he pays to take showers at the firehouse across the street. Though the weather will often tear down his sandcastle, he says that he enjoys the temporary nature of his home because it keeps him from being too possessive or materialistic.

The Brazilian man says that he dreams about one day owning his own artist’s studio, but for now, he’s content to continue being king of his little castle.

Quick-Thinking Gas Station Cashier Saves Kidnapping Victim by Locking Her in the Store’s Bathroom

Savannah Pritchett has quite likely saved a woman’s life after she made several split second decisions that led to the arrest of four kidnappers.

Pritchett, who works as a cashier at a gas station in Waterford, California, was working an afternoon shift last Wednesday when a woman came into the store with a chilling plea.

The woman grabbed Pritchett’s wrist and asked for help, saying that she had been kidnapped by four men, two of whom were armed with guns.

Thinking on her feet, Pritchett locked the front door of the store, took the woman into the bathroom, handed her her cell phone and told her to call the police. She then locked the woman in the bathroom, and as she walked back to the front of the store, she saw the kidnappers trying to open the door.

RELATEDTrain Passenger Uses a Twitter Post to Help Rescue 26 Girls From Traffickers

Pritchett unlocked the front door, told the kidnappers that the woman was in the bathroom, and pretended like everything was normal.

“I knew that if I left the door locked, they would have caught on to something and probably took off. So I went back up there, and I unlocked the door. They seriously had no idea that I knew anything,” Pritchett told KFSN.

Minutes later, law enforcement burst into the store and took two of the kidnappers into captivity. According to reports, two other juveniles were later arrested in correlation to the kidnapping. The four delinquents are believed to have ties to gang activity and other recent crimes in the area.

Police officials are calling Pritchett a hero for her quick thinking – but the cashier says that she is simply grateful to help a stranger in need.

“I’m very thankful that I got to help that girl and I am very thankful that she’s home safe with her family and now I’m happy that they got those guys off the street,” Pritchett told ABC News.

In Recounting Cave Rescue, Thai Boys Say They Now Want to Be Navy Seals When They Grow Up

In their first press conference since their dramatic rescue last week, the 12 Thai soccer players and their coach appeared before international journalists to recount their grueling experiences of being trapped inside the cave system for 18 days.

The Wild Boards soccer team had been trapped in the tunnel complex for 9 days before they were finally found by Navy SEALs. The boys say that they had been trying to use rocks to dig themselves out of the cave when they heard the divers approaching. Shocked by the appearance of the rescuers, they were even more surprised to hear a British diver speaking English, rather than Thai.

The Brit asked the team asked how many of them were present. Thankfully, one of the boys could speak English and he said there were thirteen of them in total. Relieved, the diver simply said “Brilliant.”

The Seals then kept the boys company for the following eight days it took for them all to be rescued. They ate together, slept together, and played checkers with the youngsters to keep them mentally stimulated. One Seal even spent his time in the cave wearing only his underwear and a piece of foil so the boys could use his clothes to keep warm.

Even though they all exhibited clear devotion to their adult heroes, a boy said that one of the Seals was “like my dad”, says the The Guardian. On top of that, four of the youngsters – and the 25-year-old coach – say that they now want to be Navy Seals when they grow up.

The boys will also be training as novices in Buddhist monkhood as a means of honoring Saman Kunan, the Seal who passed away in the cave system during the rescue process. According to the news outlet, they will be dedicating their training merits to his memory, which is the highest honor in Buddhism.

The boys have been declared to be in good health, and they seemed in positive spirits during the press conference, although psychiatrists have advised them to be kept away from journalists for at least one month in order to ensure their full mental recovery.

Instead of Shutting Down Teen’s Hot Dog Stand, City Helps Him Get a Permit and Start a Business

Instead of shutting down a teenager’s hot dog stand for not having a permit, the city helped him turn his stand into a business.

13-year-old Jaequan Faulkner started his hot dog stand in 2016 as a means of doing something creative to fend off his depression. Additionally, he wanted to use the money to buy himself some new clothes.

So with his tabletop business set up in front of his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the youngster started selling hot dogs, chips, and sodas to the locals – and everybody loved it.

As his stand garnered more and more attention, however, someone complained to the city’s health department for Jaequan’s lack of permit.

RELATEDIf a Child Has Been Issued a Fine for Selling Lemonade, This Legal-Ade Team is Here to Help

But instead of shutting down the entrepreneurial venture, a dozen different city departments came together to help the teen get a permit and start a business.

“When I realized what [the complaint] was, I said, ‘No, we’re not going to just go and shut him down’ like we would an unlicensed vendor,” Minneapolis Environmental Health Director Dan Huff told WTVR. “We can help him get the permit. Let’s make this a positive thing and help him become a business owner.”

Several Minneapolis health inspectors volunteered to train the youngster on food safety. They gave him a thermometer that he could use to make sure the food was above 140 degrees; they got him a hand-washing station and a tent; and they even paid for Jaequan’s permit fee.

Not only that, a local nonprofit has been teaching Jaequan entrepreneurial skills and helping him to establish his new business: Mr. Faulkner’s Old-Fashioned Hot Dogs.

The team is now raising money through a GoFundMe campaign so they can get Jaequan a mobile hot dog stand. The teen says that he will be donating a portion of the proceeds to mental health charities, and any additional funds will be put into his college fund.

But while the 13-year-old says that he has enjoyed making money and learning about business, he mostly enjoys using his hot dog stand to make people happy.

“It’s the cooking and the people,” he said. “I see someone go by with a frown on their face. I’m there with a smile, then I see a smile on their face. I just made a smile on somebody’s face by selling them a hot dog.”

Watch Hero Neighbor Help Save Dog Falling From a 9th-Story Balcony

A Brazilian man is being hailed as a hero after he saved a dog that had fallen from a ninth-story balcony.

Joao Augusto was in the right place at the right time when he was walking through Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paolo earlier this month.

He heard a bark coming from an apartment almost 100 feet above him. When he looked up, he saw that there was a Shih Tzu that was in danger of falling off the balcony.

The complex’s caretaker, Paulo Narciso, had reportedly opened the door of the building when Augusto ran up and asked for help.

RELATEDTrain Passenger Uses a Twitter Post to Help Rescue 26 Girls From Traffickers

As the caretaker ran up to see if the dog’s owner was home, Augusto went back outside to keep an eye on the Shih Tzu – and then it fell.

Nearby CCTV footage shows Augusto positioned under the dog with arms outstretched. When it falls, it slips through Augusto’s arms and knocks him to the ground. Then, it runs away unharmed.

“I knew that I wouldn’t be able to catch her but I was aware that I could cushion the fall,” Augusto told the Daily Mail. “I was on the floor for a few seconds, but it was from relief.”

Despite the dicey nature of the impromptu rescue mission, both Augusto and the Shih Tzu named Mel were confirmed to be okay after the incident. According to reporters, the dog’s owner requested to remain anonymous, but she says that she has since installed protective netting over the balcony so Mel won’t repeat her experience.

Work Less, Accomplish More: New Zealand Firm’s 4-Day Work Week an ‘Unmitigated Success’

A company in New Zealand has been researching the benefits of their employees working for four days per week, rather than the usual five days – and the results are incredibly positive.

Perpetual Guardian is an Auckland-based firm that manages estates and wills. Between March and April, they launched a “world-first” trial in which they started giving their 240 employees an extra day off for free. The staff still got paid for a 5-day work week, but they only worked Monday through Thursday.

Based on metrics that were utilized by outside researchers, the trial had a multitude of benefits. For starters, 78% of employees reported feeling capable of managing their work-life balance, which is an impressive 24% increase from a survey in November.

Workers were less compelled to check social media and they were less distracted by out-of-work projects. The team reported feeling less stressed and expressed more satisfaction with their lives. Employees were also shown to be more productive, engaged, committed, and stimulated.

RELATEDBusinessman is So Moved By Homeless Man’s Story, He Offers Him a Job On the Spot

The company is currently working on permanently implementing the 4-day work week, and they hope their model will inspire other businesses in New Zealand and around the world.

“It was just a theory, something I thought I wanted to try because I wanted to create a better environment for my team,” Perpetual Guardian CEO Andrew Barnes told CNN. “I’m humbled that my team has responded, and they went beyond my wildest dreams.”

“I have ended up with statistics that indicate my staff are fiercely proud of the company they work for because it gives a damn,” he added.

Stranger Helps Lonely Widower Celebrate After Seeing Flowers and Cake in Shopping Cart

There’s no better way to celebrate a happy occasion than with cake and red roses – so when Gregory Jonson saw an older man in a wheelchair buying a bouquet of flowers and a cake, he assumed there was something to be excited for.

“He had a dozen roses and a big birthday cake in his cart,” Johnson wrote in a Facebook post. “I made the comment, ‘it looks like you’ve got a big night planned.’ He glanced up at me with the saddest eyes I believe I’ve ever seen and told me his story.”

The man, who was called Jim, said that his wife Gloria had passed away five years ago. As a means of honoring her birthday, Jim started his annual tradition of putting roses out on his kitchen table and cutting two slices of cake for him and his wife.

“My heart just broke. I was just devastated and he looked completely broken. And I knew that I wanted to do whatever I could in that moment to take his mind off of his heartbreak,” Johnson told CBS News. “So I starting asking him questions about their life together and I believe his reminiscing made him feel better.”

LOOKWhen Beach Wedding is Rained Out, Stranger Runs Up to Bride and Offers Up Her Home Instead

When given the chance to talk, Jim happily recounted how he first met Gloria in high school because she was a cheerleader for his rival basketball team. After his team won the game, he invited her to see him play the next night – which marked the start of what would become a 53-year marriage.

Jim and Johnson ended up chatting in the grocery store for a full 90 minutes. The manager of the Kroger soon approached them and explained how he had been taking pictures of Jim every year with his flowers to mark the occasion. Upon seeing the two men talking, the manager asked if he could take a photo of the both of them together – and according to Johnson, the difference between the two pictures was very noticeable.

“Now there was a grin on his face where in the earlier picture, a sad defeated man was photographed with his roses and birthday cake. He was happy in the moment,” Johnson wrote on Facebook.

Jim then invited Johnson back to his home in Greenwood, Indiana to share the cake and celebrate Gloria’s birthday. Johnson accepted, saying he would be “honored.”

The two men ended up talking the night away, looking at old photos of Gloria, and reminiscing about the past. Johnson says that they plan on going out to lunch soon so they can continue facilitating their new friendship.

“Hopefully I made that little old man’s night a tad bit better,” wrote Johnson, “because he certainly made mine one of the best I’ve had in a long time.”

All The Single Ladies: Why More Women Are Living Alone and Why They Love It

The Lesson: The script is officially being flipped on the concept of the ‘bachelor pad’. Nowadays, more and more single women are choosing to live alone, and they’re absolutely loving it. Freed from financial or marital expectations, women of all ages are finding empowerment in the concept of living on their own. According to research, living alone can be socially beneficial as it encourages women to lead socially active lives outside the confines of their homes, meaning they become more actively involved in non-solitary activities, thus happiness skyrockets.

Notable Excerpt: “The research on living alone versus living with others is very interesting. It turns out that people who live alone are more likely to be engaged outside the home in a specific activity whereas married couples, for example, especially with young children are much less likely to have the time and the energy to maintain and create social bonds outside the home. So, there is a little bit of counterintuitive findings there because we think of families as being most connected and integrated but basically … people are social animals, in whatever situation we live in. What matters is that we have strong bonds with other people, are we well cared for, do we have others that we care for, and do we have enough economic support to be able to live well, and the research shows that it really doesn’t matter if you live alone or not, what matters are those other factors and we need to move beyond focusing on people’s marital status and their housing status especially in terms of gender, where it’s no longer the notion that a single woman of old age—women like that we called spinsters, now we call them independent women. What matters is that people have rich social lives regardless of where they live or how they live, and that’s what the research shows.”

On a Hunch, Doctor Gives HPV Vaccine to Advanced Skin Cancer Patient and Dozens of Tumors Disappear

A doctor’s hunch has eliminated all signs of advanced skin cancer from a patient who had no other options of treatment.

Two years ago, a 97-year-old woman whose right leg was covered with squamous cell tumors went to see dermatologist Anna Nichols, at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Surgery is the standard of care for most patients with skin cancer, but the woman’s tumors were so numerous, it was impossible to operate.

“She was not a candidate for surgery because of the sheer number and size of her tumors. She wasn’t a candidate for radiotherapy, again for the same reasons,” said Dr. Nichols, an assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, whose report on this case was published online in JAMA Dermatology.

WATCHHundreds of People Are Being Cured of Blindness Every Day With Cheap, Minutes-Long Surgery

Luckily, Nichols has had experience with this kind of cancer before.

Squamous cell carcinoma is the second-most-common form of skin cancer. Evidence suggests the human papilloma virus (HPV) plays a role in the development of some types of this skin cancer.

Though there is very little research that suggests an HPV vaccine could combat existing skin tumors, a case report by Dr. Nichols in 2017 showed the HPV vaccine Gardasil reduced the number of new basal and squamous cell skin cancers in two patients – so Tim Ioannides, a voluntary faculty member at UM, suggested using the vaccine as an off-label treatment by directly injecting it into the tumors.

RELATED8-Year Study Shows That Simple Treatment Can Reverse Type 1 Diabetes to Almost Undetectable Levels!

Since her patient had no other options, Dr. Nichols offered her the treatment. It is considered an “off-label” use because Gardasil is only approved for the prevention of cervical, anal, and genital cancers caused by the human papilloma virus.

“I think we had a really reasonable expectation and good data that this was actually going to, at the very least, do no harm to this patient, and possibly provide some benefit,” said Dr. Ioannides. “To have this type of result in such an advanced patient I think was beyond all our expectations.”

The patient was first given two doses of the 9-valent HPV vaccine in her arm, six weeks apart. A few weeks later, Dr. Nichols directly injected several, but not all, of the patient’s tumors. The injections were given four times over 11 months.

“All of her tumors completely resolved 11 months after the first direct tumor injection, and she has had no recurrence,” Dr. Nichols said. “It has been about 24 months now since we started with the treatment.”

“They decided to try it and it worked. It killed them all off,” said the patient, who is now looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday this fall.

Nichols hopes that the patient’s success story will prompt further research into using the vaccine as a treatment for skin cancer patients.
