Cure For Arachnophobia? Watch These Peacock Spiders Dance to “Stayin’ Alive”

Snakes and clowns aside, spiders might be the most feared creatures on planet Earth.

Although, judging by this video of small, fuzzy, neon peacock spiders, it is hard to see why.

Australian peacock spider photographer Jürgen Otto created a video of 51 colorful arachnids dancing to “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees.

Now granted, they aren’t actually “dancing”. The clips mainly feature spiders preening themselves, but it is hard to deny that it doesn’t look like boogying to the untrained eye.

The photographer says that he created it as a tribute to Australian Father’s Day, which takes place on September 3rd.

Watch Pope Francis Give Blessing to Man Who Surprised His Girlfriend With Marriage Proposal

This heartwarming wedding engagement has earned itself the unique title of “the papal proposal” after a man popped the question to his girlfriend in front of Pope Francis.

Dario Ramirez, who is a Venezuelan politician seeking refuge from the totalitarian Maduro regime, was visiting His Holiness at the Vatican earlier this week. The human rights activist was meeting with Catholic legislators to discuss the situation in his home country.

But while he had an audience with the pontiff, he decided to bring up another matter of concern: his desire to marry his girlfriend Maryangel Espinal.

Once she regained her composure, Espinal responded with: “Yes, of course!”

As everyone in the hall whooped and hollered for the newly-engaged couple, the Pope blessed their marriage on the spot.

As of now, however, all the delegates present for the proposal are invited to the wedding.

On this day 60 years ago, On the Road by Jack Kerouac was first published. Based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across the U.S., it was the defining novel of the Beat Generation–a term that the author coined himself.

The 1957 novel reflected the background of improvisational jazz, poetry, and drug use, the writing style of which Kerouac called “Spontaneous Prose.” Often named one of the top 100 novels of the 20th century, it featured key figures in the counter-culture movement, like William S. Watch Entire Football Stadium Wave to Sick Kids in Children’s Hospital Next Door

We are all familiar with the traditional sports stadium “wave” – but this Iowa team is putting a new spin on it.

During the Iowa Hawkeyes football game against the Wyoming Cowboys last weekend, the sold-out Kinnick Stadium was asked to turn towards the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital across the street and wave to the sick kids on the top floors.

The heartwarming gesture is just one of many initiatives that the sports team has taken to assist the children’s hospital – the team’s “Touchdowns For Kids” campaign has asked Hawkeyes fans to pledge $1 to the hospital for every touchdown that the team scores.

Last year alone, the team raised over $40,000 for the children’s hospital, adding to their whopping total of $400,000.

Teens Save Dad’s Life When Truck Rolls Onto His Head

Bob Staub might not be alive today if it were not for the quick-thinking of his 14-year-old son and his two teenage friends.

Staub found himself in trouble after he took the three freshmen high school students out fishing at Tunica Lake, Mississippi last weekend.

They were backing their truck and boat down the boat ramp when the car’s gear suddenly slid into park.

Because this is a common occurrence with their SUV, Staub knew that he could fix it by manually shifting the gear from underneath the car.

The father crawled under the vehicle and started fiddling with the transmission. As the car slid into neutral, however, Staub realized that he had made a fatal mistake: he had forgotten to pull the emergency brake.

The car then rolled three inches onto the side of Staub’s head, thus pinning him to the concrete. Unable to move, the dad fell in and out of unconsciousness.

Staub’s son Nick and his two friends spent the next 45 seconds pushing the car off of the man’s head until finally, Staub was able to regain consciousness and pull his head free.

The students called 911 and Staub was rushed to the hospital where doctors conducted X-rays and a CAT scan to ensure that he was unharmed. The results showed that – despite the nasty looking mark on the side of his head – he had only sustained some bruising.

Staub says that if it had not been for the teens, he may have died. Now, the dad considers the three youngsters his heroes.

Theft of Food From Cat Charity Spurs Community to Donate Enough Supply For 2 Years

After a particularly “callous” theft left a cat charity without any pet food for their 34 homeless felines, they became inundated with donations from the community.

Last month, an unidentified thief stole about $3,200 worth of food from the locked garage of the Peterborough Cats Protection in Cambridgeshire, England.

Shocked by the crime, the charity said that the food was supposed to last them until Christmas, thus leaving them in “crisis mode”.

But when their predicament was reported online, the community responded with a staggering amount of donations.

Since news of the theft was published, Cats Protection has received over $6,400 in donations and enough cat food to sustain them for the next two years.

The charity has received so much support, they will reportedly be distributing some of the finances and supplies to other struggling charities in the region.

“The response had been phenomenal … [and we are] deeply grateful,” branch coordinator Pam McNicol told the BBC.

Grammy Nominee Moved to Buy Piano for Texas Dad Who Played in Knee-deep Floodwaters

When a Texas father posted a video of himself somberly playing a piano in his flooded home, another musician became stirred to lend a hand.

Aric Harding and his family live in Friendswood, a small town south of Houston in Texas. The father of seven returned to his flooded home last week in order to retrieve some stuffed animals and toys for his children.

As a means of comforting one of his sons, who is an avid piano player, Harding sat down at the family piano and played a soothing little tune to test out the keys. He then posted a video of his performance on Instagram.

“I think it’s all finally sinking in a little,” wrote Harding alongside the clip. “What we used to have going as a city is gone. I really think God is going to do something completely new here. I am excited to see the new beauty in the suffering.”

The video of the father sitting at the mini upright piano amidst knee-deep floodwaters was quickly viewed thousands of times, until it was eventually seen by Grammy nominee Vanessa Carlton.

Carlton, who became famous for her catchy piano power ballad “A Thousand Miles”, was so moved by the striking video, that she reached out to Harding on Twitter and expressed her desire to help.

Because Carlton is a Yamaha-sponsored musician, she asked the music company if they would be willing to replace the piano for the Harding family – and they said yes.

Carlton told CNN: “He represents a lot of people down there who are musicians, and as you know a lot of these people don’t have flood insurance, and when they replace their items, they replace their essentials first. Being a musician, music is like oxygen. It is an essential.”

Harding says that his family has since been able to return to their home and start renovations on the water damage.

“We are ecstatic here at the Harding House!!! Huge thanks to all of you guys!! Now I gotta get the house together so we can house the piano,” Harding wrote on Twitter.

Tod’s, a high-end Italian fashion company, pledged a jaw-dropping $30 million to the restoration and maintenance of the Colosseum.

Since the five-year restoration of the ancient stadium began, the Colosseum’s exterior has been almost entirely purged of soot, dirt, and pollution.

For instance, legendary Italian fashion company Fendi has been hailed for contributing $21.4 million to the restoration of the Trevi Fountain.

Specialists say that while donations from private businesses may be more common in America, it is much less common in European companies – and that cultural difference is what makes contributions from Tod and Fendi all the more inspiring.

Dog Chews Boy’s Hearing Aid, and Brings Priceless Gift to Others

When a boy’s dog chewed up his hearing aid, the young man learned that not only does each replacement cost $3,000, but they also aren’t covered by insurance. Right then, he decided to do something to help people who aren’t as fortunate as he is.

“Other kids don’t get the chance to hear, simply because they can’t afford it?” said Braden Baker, who has worn hearing aids since he was a baby.

Despite being only 10 years-old, he was determined to pay his good fortune forward by raising money to fund a hearing aid for a stranger.

The youngster didn’t just achieve that goal – he did it five times over, collecting $15,000 in two months, which got him named as GoFundMe’s Hero for the month of August.

With help from the Oticon Hearing Foundation, which reached out to Branden after they learned of his selfless campaign, the boy’s efforts will result in five deaf kids from less fortunate families receiving the gift of hearing.

Last week, Braden and his mom delivered a check for $15,000 to the Foundation and were notified on Thursday that a portion of that money had purchased hearing aid batteries and supplies for deaf people in Houston affected by Hurricane Harvey.

Braden is so proud, telling GNN: “I think the President of Oticon made a smart decision in using the money to help our home state of Texas, especially the hearing-impaired people!”

Father of Metallica Bassist Who Died Has Been Quietly Donating Royalties to Child Musicians

 

The elderly father of Metallica’s late bassist is making sure that his son’s positive legacy does not just fade to black.

Cliff Burton, who was one of the founding members of Metallica, played bass guitar on the metal band’s first three albums until he was killed in a tour bus accident in 1986.

The royalties from these albums have been going to Cliff’s 92-year-old father Ray—and the senior has only now revealed what he’s been spending that money on.

Ray has been donating all of the Metallica royalties towards musical scholarships for Castro Valley High School students in the San Francisco Bay area of California.

Rapper’s Performance on Suicide Awareness Inspires 50% Spike in Hotline Calls

While some musicians might produce stage performances that are all about the glamor and glitter, hip hop artist Logic used his time at the 2017 Video Music Awards to make a very important statement.

The musician performed a heart-wrenching rendition of his single “1-800-273-8255”: a song that Logic wrote when he was contemplating suicide.

The song, which is literally named after the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, inspired a record number of call-ins for the organization. According to lifeline representatives, they received 50% more calls than average after the the performance.

Gas Station That Sold Winning Powerball Ticket is Donating its Reward to Nonprofits

While all eyes have been on Mavis Wanczyk for winning the $758 million Powerball lottery earlier this week, the store that sold her the winning ticket is in the spotlight as well.

That’s because the Pride Station and Store of Chicopee, Massachusetts is paying forward its $50,000 commission earned for selling the winning ticket—giving it all to local nonprofits and charities.

The lucky winner is Mavis Wanczyk, a 53-year-old hospital worker who immediately quit her job at the Mercy Medical Center in Springfield after a 32-year career.

Pizza Hut Workers Use Kayaks to Deliver Free Pies During Disaster

We have already heard about dozens of relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane Harvey – but this story sets a new bar for “pieing-it-forward”.

A Pizza Hut restaurant in Sugar Land, Texas paddled into their local neighborhoods earlier this week so they could make special deliveries to Texans trapped by the floodwaters.

The manager of the Pizza Hut restaurant, Shayda Willison, says that when she learned about members of the community who were trapped in their homes and running out of food, she asked the staff to start baking pies at full speed.

A team of volunteers then gathered several kayaks and loaded them high with over 120 pizzas.

“They were so happy to see us coming down their street,” Willison told FOX 4. “You never let your family go hungry.”

Other Hurricane Harvey relief efforts have included a Chick-Fil-A manager dispatching a rescue boat to help an elderly couple; a reporter being given a 6-pack of beer as a thank you for his coverage; a furniture store opening its doors to flood victims; and another reporter rushing to the rescue of a truck driver trapped in floodwaters.

New York Man Wins $5 Million Lottery While Buying Mushrooms for His Pasta

John Lewis rarely indulges in spontaneous purchases – but after running to the store to get mushrooms for his pasta sauce, he got a sudden urge to play the lottery.

It is a good thing he did, too. Upon listening to his strange desire to buy a Set For Life scratch-off, the 56-year-old bartender won the top prize of $5 million.

The Saranac Lake, New York resident says that he had originally gone to the store because he was preparing a special pasta sauce recipe for dinner.

“I ran to the store before work to get mushrooms for my spaghetti sauce,” said Lewis. “It’s a two-day sauce my dad used to make.”

“I never put money in those things,” Lewis told the New York lottery commission. “What possessed me to be in that store at that time with just the right amount of money in my hand for that machine I will never know. I have been asking myself that question over and over for days. In the end, though, I’m just glad it was me.”

Instead of opting for the lump sum, Lewis chose to receive $172,000 every year for the rest of his life.

3-week-old Brecken Archibald was given one of the greatest baptism ceremonies in Brainerd, Minnesota when he was baptized right in the treasured Stanley Cup.

The Stanley Cup is the ultimate trophy of the National Hockey League – and standing at about 35 inches tall, it is quite a trophy to be beheld.

Additionally, whenever a hockey team wins the Stanley Cup, each team member is given one day of the year to spend with the trophy.

Since the Pittsburgh Penguins were the most recent winners of the Stanley Cup in 2016, forward player Josh Archibald utilized his own day with the cup to baptize his newborn son.

Grandparents Get Jet Ski Rescue After Calling Chick-Fil-A For Help

Chick-Fil-A does not just prepare toasty chicken sandwiches – they can also reportedly serve up their meals by rescue boat when conditions get dicey.

An elderly married couple of northern Houston, Texas had been waiting out the worst of the storm with relatively good results. Over the course of the weekend, their house had remained dry and free of complications.

But then, on Monday, it quickly began filling with water.

The seniors, J.C. and Karen Spencer, did not know where to turn for help; so they called the local Chick-Fil-A restaurant at which they are regular customers. J.C. then placed an order for two grilled chicken burritos with extra egg – and a rescue boat.

The manager’s husband, who happened to have a boat, then maneuvered over to the great-grandparents’ house.

As Karen and J.C. were loading up all of their prized possessions, two mystery jet ski rescuers also arrived at the scene and offered to help.

With both grandparents riding on the backs of the jet skis, the boat rescuers were able to safely carry all of the Spencers’ important gear to dry land. They even offered to return when J.C. said that he had forgotten his wedding ring and wallet.

The Spencers are now hoping to find the jet ski rescuers and thank them for their help in the rescue.

Ulises Ornelas is an 8-year-old boy who is treating his injuries in a unique way: by selling lemonade to hospital residents and staff.

Ornelas recently underwent brain surgery at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The surgery caused the left side of his body to be temporarily paralyzed – so as a means of treating his limbs, his occupational therapist Liz Pohlen advised him to move around the hospital.

Ornelas and Pohlen then got the idea to use a lemonade stand as a part of his neuromuscular reeducation.

To make matters even better, the money that he raises from the lemonade will be donated back to the hospital that treated him.

Los Angeles Replaces Columbus Day With Indigenous Peoples Day

Los Angeles has just joined the ranks of American cities that have discarded Columbus Day as a national holiday, instead choosing to rename the celebration as Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Los Angeles City Council made the decision on Wednesday in light of many Americans seeing Columbus as a representative of slavery, racism, and genocide. The newly-named holiday instead chooses to celebrate the natives and indigenous people who were marginalized, enslaved, and oppressed at the hands of Columbus and his associated explorers.

Columbus Day, which has been recognized as a national holiday since 1937, falls on the second Monday of October. Indigenous People Day will reportedly fall on the same day and it will remain a paid holiday for city employees.

Other U.S. cities that have adopted the new name is Albuquerque, New Mexico; Seattle, Washington; Phoenix, Arizona; and Portland, Oregon. Indigenous People’s Day was originally adopted in Berkeley, California as a means of protesting the holiday’s offensive nature.

“This gesture of replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day is a very small step in apologizing and in making amends,” said L.A. Councilman Mike Bonin.
