A World First: It Took 4 Years to Film Sand Cat Cubs in the Wild, and They’re So Precious

While these may look like ordinary kittens, these little furballs are actually wild sand cat kittens – and this is the first time that they have ever been filmed in their natural habitat.

The kittens were spotted by scientists from the big cat conservation group Panthera in the Moroccan Sahara several weeks ago. Sand cat sightings are extremely hard to track because they leave behind little to no markings of their activity and they travel primarily at night. Their fur also provides perfect camouflage against their surroundings.

Grégory Breton, the managing director of the French branch of Panthera, says that their team has been researching sand cats in Africa since 2013 – and this most recent breakthrough was a huge milestone.

RELATED VIDEO: Have You Ever Seen a Hummingbird Pool Party? Watch This Magical Scene…

“Finding these kittens was astonishing,” says Breton. “We spent an hour taking pictures and videos and setting up camera traps in the hopes of recording some natural behavior once we left.”

While studying the desert felines may have a rewarding scientific payoff – but the researchers say that it is far from easy.

“A typical day in the field involves waking up at 8 a.m., recording the daytime resting locations of the collared cats when we can find them, napping in the afternoon after a meal cooked and eaten in the shade of rare acacia trees or in one of our tents, and setting out again between sunset and sunrise,” says Breton.

LOOKTiger Family Poses For Amazing Selfies Before Knocking Out Camera’s Memory Card

“There’s no electricity and no bathrooms. When sandstorms happen, we have to stow our gear away—and retreat to our tent or vehicle to protect our faces, unless we’re in the mood for a free peeling.”

Over the course of the last four years, however, Breton and his team have accumulated an impressive amount of data on the elusive sand cat which will help to ensure their conservation in the future.

“Ours has been the most extensive research on this species, and it will surely help to protect it,” says Breton.

“1 weekend, 6 hours and I nailed a backflip on the resi at Rampworld Cardiff! Super stoked!” the teen wrote on Facebook. “Now I need a neck brace and back padding before I try it out on concrete!”

While Beattie had cerebral palsy, Rice is unable to efficiently move her legs because of hereditary spastic paraplegia – a degenerative disease that causes stiffness in the legs.

The teen, who is from Pembrokeshire, Wales, has only been doing wheelchair motocross for about a year. Once she raises enough money for a new motocross wheelchair, however, she hopes to compete in the WCMX World Championships in March next year.

Cancer Survivor Breaks Down When She Discovers ‘Hope’ Rock Left Near Her Car By Total Stranger

Nancy Hicks was leaving a clothing store in September when a brightly painted pink rock caught her eye.

Not just a kid’s art project, a grown woman had left the rock next to her car. And the message on the rock read “Hope” — with a ribbon for breast cancer.

“It touched me in a way that I can’t even explain,” Nancy told WKBW TV in Buffalo, New York.

Nancy is a breast cancer survivor and the stranger who left it, Theresa Wrobel, whose father died of liver cancer, had no idea the driver was a breast cancer survivor.

As if it were fate, Theresa’s breast cancer rock, which she made for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, fell into the hands of a breast cancer survivor.

Even talking about it now, Nancy begins to cry. “That rock means a lot to me…”

These Cards Ask Questions That Will Make You Closer to Your Friends and Family

Imagine if there were an easier way to get to know someone better – or to make breakthroughs in authentic, heartfelt connection.

Meet Cards to the Heart.

In a world where intimate relationships often begin in a swipe left/right situation, and friends hesitate to discuss “heavier” topics, Cards to the Heart is an ideal game for helping others bring their walls down and open up their hearts to one another.

Created by Dom Scott, the cards were originally designed as a fun game to help him get to know his partner better.

CHECK OUT: Human Library Lets You Check Out People, Aims to Foster Diversity

Each of the 54 cards has an engaging question that’s meant to spark a conversation. Rather than the standard “Tell me about the first time you did X” questions, these cards delve a bit deeper: about topics that inspire us, that scare us, that bring us joy. They also all feature an original painting by Toronto artist Natasha Kudashkina.

Scott and his partner had such a great time discussing the questions, they started printing small batches to give to friends as gifts. Then, the recipients asked how they could get copies of the deck to give to their own friends… and then, demand for them just exploded.

They’re not just for romantic relationships either—the questions are perfect for getting to know new friends. Since people are constantly growing and evolving, the cards can be used over and over again, even amongst the same people.

Scott’s Kickstarter campaign for the cards’ production has already raised over half of its $9,500 goal. By spreading the word, he hopes to help more people enjoy meaningful, authentic connections with friends and loved ones.

By carrying these in your pocket, you can rest assured you’ll never be short of a good conversation again.

Man Risks His Own Safety to Rescue Impala Stuck in Mud

A man dove into a pit of mud for one heroic reason: to rescue a female impala that had become trapped in the muck.

The impala, which had apparently fallen into the mud at the Zimbabwe National Park, had become exhausted from unsuccessfully trying to escape. Thankfully, he was spotted by the right man to help.

Before plunging into the pit, the man tied a safety rope around his waist and crawled towards the frightened animal.

Upon reaching the impala, he tied the rope around its legs and told his friends to pull the two of them to safety.

While the impala was initially too exhausted to move, they poured some bottled water into her mouth. She then leaped to her feet and ran back towards her pack.

Often when we’re going through a rough time, we feel alone, and just having someone notice and understand makes all the difference between feeling invisible and feeling loved and supported. For Cheryl, that card bearing just two little words is what made her realize she wasn’t alone.

The two words?

You Matter.

Cheryl told me she teared up when she read the message. “I’ve struggled at times with my own self-worth, and when I received the card, it felt like a question I carry around with me had been answered. I matter. That expression from her to me filled me up.”

Cheryl was so touched by the gesture that she ordered 100 of her own cards to give away, first to family and friends and then to acquaintances. Eventually, she also started leaving cards in strategic locations to brighten strangers’ days—in the credit card holders at gas pumps, in library books, on car windshields.

And then she got bolder.

Man Who Helped Rescue Kidnapped Girl Gives Her His $7,000 Reward

After helping to rescue a young woman who had just escaped her kidnappers, this 65-year-old man then handed over his $7,000 reward because she was “the real hero”.

Earl Melchert first saw 15-year-old Jasmine Block when he returned to his home in Alexandria, Minnesota last month in order to retrieve a diesel can that he had forgotten to grab earlier that day.

The teen had only just escaped from a nearby abandoned house after her kidnappers had gone out to eat. After knocking on the doors of several neighboring homes without any luck, Block swam across a lake and started trekking across Melchert’s field when he spotted her.

Melchert brought Block back to his home where they called the police and organized the arrest of her kidnappers.

Ever since Block first disappeared, law enforcement officials had been offering $7,000 for any information on her whereabouts. When they handed Earl the check for the reward earlier this week, however, he immediately gave it to Block.

“Today we witnessed an incredible example of kindness,” says Alexandria Police Chief Rick Wyffels. “Earl Melchert, the man who made the call everyone was waiting for … was presented with the reward money that had been offered by the Sarah Block family and an anonymous source.”

“What no one expected was the kindness and generosity that came straight from Earl’s heart today. He believes that young lady that came running towards him that September day is the real hero and without hesitation, Earl handed the reward over to her, followed by a big hug.”

“The family needs the money,” Melchert told the New York Times. “To me, yeah, that’s a lot of money, but they need it way worse than I do.”

The professional car racer is being hailed for giving up the gold in order to ensure the safety of a stray dog that had wandered onto the race track.

Matos was piloting his Ford Fiesta R5 around the second pass of a track in the Constalica Rallye Vouzela competition last month when he saw the pup standing in the middle of the road.

Matos then flipped a U-turn and continued on his way – however, the precious seconds that he had sacrificed to save the dog had cost already cost him the victory.

Two Countries Now Protecting Ocean Area Twice the Size of Germany

Two countries have just ensured the preservation of their ocean habitats – and it is being hailed as a huge victory for marine conservation worldwide.

Last week, Chile announced the establishment of two new national marine parks that will protect roughly 240,000 square miles of ocean from commercial fishing and dangerous human activity.

Additionally, the small South Pacific island nation of Niue converted 40% of its exclusive economic waters into a protected marine park. Exclusive economic zones are oceanic areas in which the country can claim exclusive rights for fishing, drilling, and other economic activities.

Given the size of the country, the Niue parks will provide protection to an impressive 49,000 square miles of ocean.

The total of both marine park additions is a whopping 340,000 square miles of protected ocean – which is roughly twice the size of Germany.

Chile’s new marine park alone has become the largest oceanic reserve of its kind in South America. According to National Geographic, the reserve is home to seals, sea lions, albatrosses, penguins, petrels, and whales. The Nieu reserves, on the other hand, will protect the world’s largest population of reef sharks in the world.

When Boy Donates Prized Jersey For Puerto Rico Relief, Soccer Hero Responds in Kind

A 7-year-old boy was hailed for giving up his prized possession in order to help Puerto Rican families affected by the hurricanes – and he was rewarded for his kindness by his all-time favorite sports hero.

Alex Ibarra is a huge soccer fan who owns a collection of 54 different jerseys – but there is one shirt that he treasured above the rest: an autographed Christian Pulisic jersey from the American Outlaws Oakland team.

Ibarra had first gotten the jersey signed during the March World Cup qualifier in San Jose. When he heard about the state of Puerto Rico following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, however, he donated the jersey to a raffle that would raise money for hurricane relief efforts.

“I’m raffling it off because I’m trying to raise money for the Puerto Ricans that don’t have food and water,” Alex said. “Puerto Rico’s really important to me because they’re one of our territories.”

While the 7-year-old Junior Capo wasn’t donating the jersey for praise or attention, the news eventually made its way to Christian Pulisic himself.

In recognition of the little philanthropist, Pulisic recorded a special video of himself for Ibarra saying that he would be sending the youngster another signed jersey to replace the one he donated. He also said that he would be making a donation towards Puerto Rico relief efforts to follow Ibarra’s example.

Google Company to Restore Cell Coverage to Puerto Rico With 30 Flying Balloons

While Hurricanes Maria and Irma have left Puerto Rico almost entirely without cell coverage, help may be on the way in the form of 30 balloons.

Alphabet, the parenting company of Google, has just been granted permission by the Federal Communications Commission to launch balloons from their Loon Project over the Caribbean island.

With 90% of Puerto Rico without cell coverage, the Loon project balloons would act as replacements for the cell towers that were knocked over by the storm. Each balloon would hover about 12 miles off the ground and provide voice and data coverage for roughly 2,000 square miles (5,000 square kilometers). The coverage would be provided through local carriers.

The Loon project has already been hailed successful for bringing cell coverage to Peru during the country’s flooding last spring.

Touring Group of Acro-Cats Has Helped to Save 200 Other Felines

Not many people believe that cats can be trained, let alone play musical instruments or jump through hoops – but that is exactly what The Amazing Acro-Cats do.

The Acro-Cats are a group of 17 traveling feline performers who do shows across America. Their trainer and caretaker, Samantha Martin, says that she started the group in 2009 after she failed to pursue her dream of being an animal trainer for Hollywood movies and television.

“People started showing up in droves to see these cats,” says Martin. “And even though they sucked – I mean half of the tricks would fail, or the cats would be really distracted – people just thought it was phenomenal.”

Every cat in the circus troupe is a former stray or rescue. While the cats’ performances can sometimes be a little sloppy, Martin says that she enjoys being able to show spectators that cats can be trained – no matter their reputation.

“Dogs will work for love, but you know, cats need to have a little extra motivation,” says Martin in the video below. “People are thrilled no matter what the cats do, because sometimes the cats do great, and other times, the cats are terrible. But people still love it because they see that the cats really control the show.”

Additionally, The Acro-Cats‘ performances have helped hundreds of their fellow felines.
