Former Publisher Opens $30-million Home to 70 Foster Kids Displaced by Irma

When these 70 foster children did not have anywhere else to go, they found sanctuary in an unlikely place: a millionaire’s mansion.

The foster children from the SOS Children’s Village in Florida had been staying in a gymnasium for a week without showers—and needed to find other accommodations—so the foster care representatives called Marc Bell, the former executive of Penthouse magazine.

Hearing about the foster kids’ dilemma, Bell and his wife Jennifer immediately opened their doors to the children.

Since the youngsters were welcomed into the $30 million home in Boca Raton, the Bells have treated them to live music, manicures, and performances by a balloon artist.

“They don’t have a mom or a dad so they’re scared, and then their house parents, even know they’re there for them, they’re scared too,” Jennifer told WPEC. “So to have these kids feel welcomed and to just feel comfortable, as a mom it just makes you feel like you’re doing something good.”

“It’s knowing that later on these kids are going to look back and they’re going to want to help someone else.”

The Majestic Long-Endangered Snow Leopard is Not Endangered Anymore

After decades of being listed as endangered, the status of the majestic snow leopard has finally been upgraded to “vulnerable”.

The reclassification was announced this week by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) after a 3-year survey showed great improvements in their population.

Thanks to improved tracking techniques, such as camera traps and satellite imagery, conservations can now follow the animal’s movements and patterns across Asia. The most recent study estimated that there were between 4,000 and 10,000 mature snow leopards in the wild today.

CHECK OUT: India Saves Its Tigers Instead of Mining For $330M in Diamonds

In order to be listed as endangered, the species must have less than 2,500 mature adults in the wild and their numbers must be in steep decline.

While the reclassification is cause for celebration, conservationists are still keeping a close eye on the population. Researchers currently believe that the recorded amount of snow leopard deaths have been due to farmers protecting livestock, but because of how difficult it is to get exact population counts, they remain wary of poaching dangers.

The IUCN credits the rebound to anti-poaching measures taken by Central Asian communities and the establishment of more protected wildlife zones across 12 countries.

How to Raise Your Kids to Have Self-Esteem – 8 Tips and Tricks

It is vitally important that parents instill a positive sense of self in their children. If the youngsters develop appropriate self-esteem, they will have the capacity to grow into well-adjusted adults.

These positive feelings of self-confidence and self-acceptance enable them to undertake new challenges—and fail and try again. Any successes give them pride, and encourages them to do their best so they can feel good all over again.

Children with low self-esteem are insecure and lack self-confidence. They end up being confused and unsure of themselves. Low self-esteem blocks success, as your children are unwilling to interact with others for fear of rejection. They do not have the guts to stand up for themselves and generally avoid challenges. When they are setback by mistakes, it may be difficult for them to make a comeback. It will eventually lead to stress, which leads to health issues.

Building Your Child’s Self-Esteem

Every child is wonderful and special. However, self-esteem does not develop by constantly telling them this fact. Also, persistently rewarding them does not build their self-esteem. They develop self-esteem from their own failures and successes. This is why smart parenting can make them develop the confidence to tackle the challenges of everyday life.

WATCH4-Year-old Can’t Contain Emotions When He Hears Stepmom Give Special Message During Wedding Vows

8 Tips to Reach Your Goal:

Give your kids choices: It is important that you allow your children to make their own choices. However, these choices must be within a set of options that you set yourself. For instance, giving them the choice of which food to eat for breakfast. This empowers your kids, as they are capable of making simple choices at a young age. As they grow up, they will be capable of making more difficult choices.

Give them responsibilities: Provide your children with responsibilities around the home at a young age. with chores like taking care of the family pet, clearing the dinner table, or picking up their toys. Their problem solving skills will improve and they’ll feel more competent. These chores should not be too much for their age, that they feel overworked.

Spend personal time with your kids: You should spend time with your child by taking walks, teaching them to ride a bike, or enjoying food together. The bond between you will cement your parent-child relationship and give them confidence that you will back them up if they fail.

Show them no one is perfect: When your child makes a mistake or disappoints you, your reaction is critical to how they will feel about themselves in the future. Over-reaction does not inspire self-confidence. Explain to them that no one expects them to be perfect, and give examples of when you were not.

Allow them to learn from their mistakes: Do not do things they can do themselves, or answer questions that they can figure out for themselves. Give your children the space to try it for themselves. This helps them develop new skills and avoid over-dependence on you. You will, however, need to be patient as they try to do it on their own. They will develop more confidence and competence as they successfully handle things in front of them.

POPULARFamily Has Adopted 88 Special Needs Kids in the Past Four Decades

Only offer sincere praise: Do not praise your child too much. Believe it or not, it is easy for kids to discern when you are only giving them lip service, when it comes to compliments. Praise them when it is necessary and be specific with your compliments. Instead of, “You’re so smart,” you can say, “I like the way you figured that out all by yourself.” Instead of looking at scribbled artwork and saying,  “That’s so beautiful,” describe what you like or want them to develop. Say, “I love your choice of colors and how you used all the space on the paper.”

Show your children respect: Calling your children names and using sarcasm to drive a point home is a major contributor in making children less confident. Do not demean the feelings of your child. Take your time before making a response and choose your words wisely when speaking to them. Clearly show your child their mistake and correct them without belittling them.

Show them their uniqueness: It is important that you show your children their individuality. Do not try to make a comparison between them and other people. Appreciate their special talents and personality.

Try to nurture their self-confidence naturally, but remember that developing a child’s confidence is a process that takes time. Be respectful, show your kids acceptance, encourage communication, and, above all, be their role model of a confident person.

Bank Wants to Help Customers Affected by Hurricane, Waives 3 Big Fees in Florida

Hurricane Irma has impacted almost everyone in Florida, transplanting many from their homes and disrupting their lives. Something as simple as not having a bank branch nearby with which to do business could lead to late fees, surcharges from non-associated ATMs, etc.

One bank is doing their part by easing that bit of worry for its customers.

Stearns Bank had to close its branches in the cities of Sarasota, St. Petersburg, and Venice on Friday, and announced the last of those effected offices will reopen today.

POPULARBank That Lost 66 Workers on 9/11 Has Paid for All Their Kids to Go to College

To help their Florida customers while they recover from Hurricane Irma, Stearns is waiving fees in three categories.

  • For consumer & business checking and savings accounts, they will waive overdraft fees from Sept. 8th–25th
  • They will waive – or refund – late fees on loan payments for 3 months (Sept. 12 – Dec. 12)
  • They are refunding surcharges for any ATM transactions incurred between Sept. 8th–25th

“Stearns Bank feels this is the very least we can do considering the impact the hurricane has had on the region,” said the company in a press release.

“If you’re affected by Hurricane Irma and need financial assistance or have questions on accounts you hold with us, call 1-844-256-BANK (2265) so we can help.”

Little Girl Uses Her Lemonade Stand to Pay Down Other Kids’ School Lunch Debt

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade; and then use that lemonade to help less fortunate children in your community.

That is what Amiah Van Hill in Hayden, Idaho is doing for her schoolmates.

The second grade student has been selling lemonade in order to pay off the school lunch debt of the Coeur d’Alene Public School district.

CHECK OUT: New Mexico to Pass First Law Prohibiting “Lunch Shaming”

Her “Lemonade 4 Lunch” stand initially raised about $40 last weekend, which was enough to pare down the debt at three local schools. Then, she set her sights on a much bigger goal: $23,000.

By starting a GoFundMe campaign with her mom, the 6-year-old will be using her lemonade stand and the crowdfunding initiative to raise enough money to cover lunch debts throughout the district.

Amiah, who attends Hayden Meadows Elementary School, says that she first became inspired to raise money for the cause after she read a story about John Lew: a Seattle dad who raised over $50,000 for his state’s lunch debt.

While Amiah may be a lot younger than Lew, her path will make a big difference for other students.

Over $60K Raised for Vendor After Video Shows Police Seizing His Money

A Twitter video of a college police officer seizing a street vendor’s personal money may have stirred online controversy, but it has also spurred a community to action.

A hot dog vendor who has asked to only be identified as “Beto” was managing a food cart near the Memorial Stadium for the first home football game of the season on the University of California Berkeley campus when he was approached by a police officer.

Upon discovering that Beto did not have a permit to sell food, the officer wrote him a citation and took all the money out of his wallet as evidence.

CHECK OUT: Public Raises $100K For Widower Selling Kindling to Pay Wife’s Medical Bills

Martin Flores, who had been attending the game with his family when he went to go buy some hot dogs, began to film the exchange in protest.

Flores can be heard in the video saying: “You’re gonna take his money away? That’s not right. People can drink on campus for football games and no ticket, but a hard-working man selling hot dogs and earning a living gets his money taken away?”

Beto later told sources that he has a job in construction during the day, but he wanted to sell hot dogs on Saturday as a means of making a little extra money. In total, the officer seized $60 from his wallet.

RELATEDWhen Lone Senior Loses Memory at Dinner, Cops Sit Down to be Her Dates

UC Berkeley officers are responsible for investigating illegal street vending, but representatives say that they are instructed to issue a warning before a citation. Three other street vendors were allegedly detained earlier that day, but they had only been given warnings.

After the video of the police officer went viral, however, Flores created a GoFundMe campaign that has already raised over $68,000 for Beto.

An investigation of the incident is currently underway.

“I’m very grateful for the support I’ve received,” Beto told NBC News. “I was simply working to support my family … I’m very thankful, now that I see everyone supporting me.”

When Hurricane Irma Raged Outside, Cop Offered His Hand to Frightened Senior For a Dance

Despite floodwaters raging outside, this police officer was moved inside to take a frightened senior “Beyond the Sea”.

Deputy Froelich was stationed at a hurricane shelter in Florida on Saturday to watch over dozens of other families and state residents seeking refuge from the storm.

One of the evacuees in particular caught Froelich’s eye: a frightened-looking elderly woman who was sitting by herself in the corner.

Watch Rescuers Scale Cliff to Save Crying 1-Day-old Seal

When this 1-day-old baby seal was abandoned by her mother on a beach, these rescuers stopped at nothing to rescue her.

A pedestrian first spotted Morwenna the seal crying by herself on a beach in Cornwall, England. The concerned civilian then notified volunteers from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, and several other conservation groups.

After monitoring the youngster from afar in order to make sure that her mother was not returning with food, the volunteers prepared for rescue.

Two used ropes and rappelled down to the beach and wrapped the seal in a towel and a “seal rescue bag”.

They then climbed back up and brought the baby to a facility where she was evaluated and declared healthy by wildlife specialists. The nursery staff named her Morwenna after a character from the BBC series Poldark.

“She is being fed every four hours and the team are just starting to introduce her to fish soup, to ensure she is gaining weight correctly,” Tamara Cooper, curator of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, told Cornwall Live. “She will be looked after in our indoor hospital for a few weeks but as soon as she is feeding for herself she will move to the outdoor nursery pools.”

Man Comes Home to Find Cat Waiting For Him – Except He’s Never Owned a Cat

There is nothing like coming home to a loving furry feline who has been eagerly awaiting your return— unless you have never owned a cat in the first place.

This is exactly what happened to a user of the Imgur photo sharing site named Nigel a few weeks ago.

The San Diego, California resident came home from work to find a small brown cat without a collar or tags sitting on his chair, waiting for him.

CHECK OUT: Hummingbird Refuses to Leave the Dog Who Saved Her Life

The cat, who Nigel assumes wriggled its way into the house by means of an open window, began meowing frantically at the sight of him.

The Californian assumed that the cat was hungry, so he went to the store and bought some pet food and supplies. Needless to say, the mystery feline was very pleased by the offering and started to meow and purr as it gobbled up the food.

Nigel then started canvassing his neighborhood in search of the mystery cat’s owner. Strangely, no one said that they were missing a cat.

He then took the feline, who Nigel temporarily dubbed Lil Gato, to the vet to see if he was microchipped. Not only did the cat have zero records of a previous owner, but he also had worms and fleas.

After Nigel paid to have the cat treated, he started asking his neighbors if anyone had owned a kitten or a mother cat that had given birth recently. Again, no luck.

Finally, Nigel accepted that the little cat had simply adopted him as his rightful owner. Nigel and Lil Gato, now called Buddy, have become the best of buds.

Buddy reportedly follows Nigel around the house and takes every opportunity to snuggle with him – even if it means curling up on top of his head.

One Imgur user commented on Nigel’s photos, saying: “He chose you. You are his Forever Dad now … I think you’re a fantastic person for taking him into your life.”

Another wise comment read: “Cats always know when they will be welcome.”

While Buddy’s origin story is still a mystery, one thing is for sure: he is going to have a loving future.

Watch Reporter Leap to the Rescue of Dolphins Beached From Hurricane Irma

While the Caribbean is still reeling in the wake of Hurricane Irma, thousands of good Samaritans are coming to the rescue of their neighbors – and the stranded animals and wildlife.

MSNBC reporter Kerry Sanders became a firsthand example of this spirit after he helped rescue two dolphins – one baby and one adult – from the shores of Marco Island in Florida.

Sanders and his crew were reviewing the damage on the beach when they met a man who was carrying a baby dolphin wrapped in a blanket. The man said he had transported the calf from the sidewalk farther up the beach.

CHECK OUT: 5 Amazing Ways People are Aiding Hurricane Harvey Evacuees

Sanders, who is a long time resident and reporter in the Gulf Coast, has assisted in dozens of dolphin rescues and stories, so he knew exactly what to do. He and the man worked together to guide the small mammal through the turbulent ocean waves and out into safer waters.

As the news crew continued down the beach, they then found another beached dolphin that was panting heavily and showing signs of confusion.

Since a group of concerned onlookers had already gathered around the animal, Sanders decided to direct the rescue effort and organize the pedestrians.

Sanders told the group to pick up the dolphin from its underbelly, rather than its fins, and carry it into calmer waters. Several members of the group then swam with the dolphin until it could safely escape the choppy waters.

“Once that dolphin started to show a little bit of life, that was pretty inspiring,” said one of the pedestrians.

Post-9/11 Charity Started with $500, Now Has Given $150Mil to Assist Wounded Veterans

The Semper Fi Fund, a top-rated veteran nonprofit that celebrated its 13th anniversary in May, is thrilled to announce that it has reached a major milestone. The Fund has passed the $150 million mark in providing assistance to post-9/11 service members and their families.

“It seems like only yesterday that a handful of us, a small group of military spouses at Camp Pendleton, met around my kitchen table with $500 and a desire to help our wounded coming home from Iraq,” said Semper Fi Fund President, CEO and Founder Karen Guenther.

Helping just three service members and their families back then, the charity has since served 18,500 veterans and 10,000 families — a number which continues to grow every day.

RELATEDFirst Ever Quadriplegic Treated With Stem Cells Regains Motor Control in His Upper Body

Designed to help wounded, critically ill, and injured members of all branches of the Armed Forces, the nonprofit provides direct financial assistance for expenses, such as medical bills, hotel rooms for family members at the bedside, and living essentials that are most pressing for a wounded service member during a long hospitalization or rehabilitation. Support continues after initial injury to include housing assistance, apprenticeship skills, rehabilitative sports programs, like mountain biking and golf, and PTSD support.

Since its inception in 2004, the Semper Fi Fund has prided itself on low overhead averaging at six percent on average, no red tape, and quick and relevant assistance. As a result, charity watchdogs have given the Semper Fi Fund their highest ratings for six consecutive years. The Fund is one of only two veteran nonprofits to receive and A+ from Charity Watch, and it gets a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator.

Dog Insists On Saving Every Stranded Earthworm, Gently Lifting Them Onto the Grass

This 2-year-old pup does not care how small an animal is – she is determined to save every single one of them.

Whenever Holliday the German shepherd/border collie mix goes on a walk with her owner Caitlyn Beebe, she makes sure to rescue all of the earthworms that are stranded on the hot dry pavement.

“She gently picks them up in her mouth and then carries them over to the grass,” says Beebe.

“On walks, she will run around the neighborhood and look for stray earth worms and bugs to save. She will spot the worms far in advance, and run over as fast as she can to save them. Sometimes, she even tries to save the dried, dead ones.”

Beebe, who adopted Holliday from the Felines and Canines Animal Shelter in Chicago, says that she is not sure where the hound picked up the peculiar habit, but she thinks her mother must have been the catalyst.

“When she was a puppy, my mom would take the earth worms from the road and throw them in the grass. The only way I can think that Holliday learned this behavior, is from watching my mom when we came home for the weekends.”

Beebe recently recorded her dog’s life-saving behavior, and she says that she is delighted to share Holliday’s story in hopes that it will inspire others to show the same amount of compassion to creatures large and small.

I Transformed Haunting Memories By Returning to Those Places With Gifts

I was a heroin addict the last time I walked the sidewalks of this California beach town. I ruined my relationship with the girl of my dreams, but recently got a second chance to do it over.

While the town is outwardly beautiful, I worried about how I would react passing by, once again, the street corners and hang-outs that haunted my memory of this place.

My girlfriend, Jess, suggested that together we could transform these locations, by returning there with gifts and joyful hearts. We loaded up her truck with flowers to give away, bottles of water to hand out, and a stack of yellow paper with inspirational messages printed out for anyone who looked like they could use new perspective on life.

The first stop confirmed the brilliance of this idea. We parked next to a small home where I previously bought dope. The mailbox was right next to the sidewalk, so we placed inside the yellow motivational message, some flowers, and a personal note of forgiveness to let the man know how his dealing of heroin had affected one of his customers.

POPULARRick Steves Sacrifices Nest Egg to House Dozens of Homeless Women and Kids

We said a prayer, lingered awhile kissing at the front gate, and when we turned to leave, my girlfriend exclaimed, “Look at those elephant ears! I used to grow those back in Florida.”

Then a woman’s voice came through the open front door saying, “You like my elephant ears?”

“Oh, yes,” replied Jess, who began to engage a kindhearted woman in chatter about gardening. The small yard was well-tended with a variety of tropical flowers and shrubs that she described for us.

“Do you want to take some home? They are growing all over the place,” she said as she pointed to all the baby elephant ears that had sprung up around the porch.

Jess was thrilled and entered the gate to go look. The middle-aged woman, who we’ll call Deborah, grabbed a small silver pail and a trowel and began digging out three little baby plants from the dark, rich soil. She said her mother-in-law, who owned the home, was sitting in a chair just inside the door.

RELATEDFormer Addict Cuts Homeless People’s Hair and Spreads Joy of Rehab

While she dug, I grabbed the flowers from the mailbox, which she likely hadn’t noticed, and waited to hand them to her as a gift in return. Then, my girlfriend asked if we could get a photo to remember this amazing moment on Peach Street—which now held a significance that Deborah might never know.

We walked away in a giddy daze, quite stunned at the lovely turn of events, and we knew that whenever we drove past this house in the future, we would remember the blissful encounter with Deborah.

Transforming a traumatic memory by revisiting the location and creating an alternate reality was a great idea! We moved on to a bus stop, where we met a homeless man, gave him snacks and water, and engaged him in a long conversation, vigorously shaking his hand before hopping back into the truck.

Next was a park where drunks and junkies hung out; also on site were a couple families and teens just playing basketball. We brought a neon yellow frisbee to help reengineer the energy of this place, and began running and tossing it back and forth. After 20 minutes, we handed out more water, snacks, blessings and inspiring words. With his wife sitting in a lawn chair next to him holding the flowers we’d just handed her, a large man named Frank gave my girlfriend a big bear hug and assured me that all it took to stay clean was a strong connection to the spiritual being within my own heart.

WATCHTherapy Wolves Become Guides for Troubled Teens

At one of the last stops, an Alcoholics Anonymous hall where I used to attend meetings—but also get into trouble—we found that a gorgeous new arts center had sprung up next door. Out front was a fierce ten-foot high metal sculpture of a dragon and a bird that overlooked the sidewalk. It was a fitting symbol of rebirth.

Quenching the addictive fire in my personality was something I had been striving to do for many years, and birdwatching was a hobby I’d shared with my beloved whenever times were good.

The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck for people who are worthy of it. If I can remain honest and disciplined, I think I can finally believe that I am worthy, no matter what street corner I find myself on.

The 81st annual Corso Zundert parade in the little Dutch village of Zundert continued its flowery tradition last week by showcasing 20 awe-inspiring floats.

This year’s winner was Buurtschap Schijf, a volunteer organization whose massive Amazonian sculpture was supported and “worshipped” by 260 costumed participants. It is the first time that Schijf has won first prize, according to the Corso Zundert website.

Citizens of the Netherlands take the parade very seriously, and usually start designing ideas for the wagons immediately after the competition ends – with 363 days to plan for the next celebration.

Between the months of May and August, teams of competing workers construct the frames, and await the feverish scramble the night before the parade, when fresh flowers are finally nailed into place.

“By the First Sunday of September, the fever burns within us,” the Corso Zundert website reads. “Will the moving floats be finished in time? Are there enough dahlias? And who is going to win this time?”

The first Zundert flower parade in 1936 honored Queen Wilhelimina’s birthday, but the ‘parade’ only consisted of a modest bicycle and farmer’s cart. Since the village is known for having over 50 different species of dahlias, the idea of a larger flower parade eventually blossomed.

In order to keep a cap on the competitive craziness, the judges have limited the float size to 62 feet long, 15 meters wide, and 30 feet tall.

Because of its historical significance in the Netherlands, winning the trophy for best float is considered to be one of the greatest honors a Dutch citizen can receive in their lifetime.
